BUTLER COUNTY EMA LOOKING FOR NAMES OF VOLUNTEERS AND ORGANIZATIONS WHO HELPED POPLAR BLUFF RECOVER FROM SPRING STORMS

The Butler County EMA Director is looking for the names of people who helped the area recover following the storms that occurred in March.

According to Robbie Myers, they are looking for the name of any group, agency, church, business, or individual that helped the community during the storm recovery.

The list will be shared online, with legislators, and Governor Mike Kehoe.

Anyone who wants to submit a name is asked to do it by emailing BluffStrongShoutout@gmail.com.

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN FLOWN TO ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL AFTER WEEKEND CRASH

A Poplar Bluff woman was badly injured in a crash over the weekend near Harviell.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 24 year old woman was driving on US Highway 160 shortly before 2:30 am Saturday when her vehicle ran the left side of the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned.

The woman suffered serious injuries in the crash and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

DATE ANNOUNCED FOR 2025 POPLAR BLUFF WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S

A date has been announced for an annual event in Poplar Bluff to help fight Alzheimer’s disease.

The 2025 Poplar Bluff Walk to End Alzheimer’s will begin at 10 am on Saturday, October 4th at the Poplar Bluff High School track on Oak Grove Road.

Registration will begin at 9 am that morning and you can also register online at alz.org/PoplarBluff.

All funds raised through the Walk to End Alzheimer's furthers the care, support, and research efforts of the nonprofit Alzheimer's Association.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN ARRESTED ON RAPE CHARGES

Authorities in a Southeast Missouri town have arrested an area man on rape charges.

Steele Police Chief Billy Joe Stanfield tells KWOC News that on Friday, 66 year old Leon Amerson, of Steele, was arrested on an active Pemiscot County warrant charging him with 1st degree rape or attempted rape - aggravated sexual offense, 1st degree rape or attempted rape, and 1st degree sodomy or attempted sodomy.

Stanfield added that his department had received a report of an alleged sexual assault involving a minor which initiated the investigation.

Amerson was held on no bond at the Pemiscot County Justice Center.

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE TO HOST RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY FOR NEW DEXTER CLASSROOM

A ribbon cutting ceremony has been scheduled for this month to celebrate the opening of a new Three Rivers College classroom.

TRC and Farm Credit Southeast Missouri will be hosting the ribbon cutting for the new Farm Credit Southeast Missouri Classroom at 1 p.m. on August 21, at the Three Rivers College - Dexter location.

The classroom is part of a partnership that will include a new agriculture education classroom built on the Three Rivers Farm in Fairdealing, and Farm Credit Southeast Missouri classrooms at Three Rivers locations in Poplar Bluff, Dexter, Kennett, and Sikeston.

CULVERT REPLACEMENT SCHEDULED FOR TODAY ON BUSINESS 60 IN STODDARD COUNTY

Business 60 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace a culvert under the roadway.

The work zone is located from Two Mile Road to Smith Avenue in Dexter.

Weather permitting, crews will be working today through 4 p.m.

OZARK BORDER ANNUAL MEETING SCHEDULED FOR FRIDAY

The annual membership meeting of the Ozark Border Electric Cooperative will be conducted this week.

The meeting will be held at 2:30 pm on Friday at the Ozark Border Headquarters on South Westwood Boulevard in Poplar Bluff.

Members will be voting for the Board of Directors, with three seats being contested. The first will see incumbent Judy Lunsford taking on Gary Melton and Tod Spradley for the District 2 seat. Incumbent Bill Hager will be facing Derek Boyers for the District 3 seat.

The other race is in District 4, where incumbent Greg Lintz is being challenged by Chad Payne. Each race is for a three year term.

Voting will be conducted on multiple dates and locations this week in the leadup to the meeting. Voting and registration will be available for all members today at the Malden Ozark Border Office, on Tuesday at the Puxico Office, on Wednesday at the Van Buren Office, and on Thursday at the Doniphan Office. Those four locations will be open for voting on their respective dates from 9 am to 3 pm.

Voting will be available at the Poplar Bluff Ozark Border Electric Headquarters on Friday from 7 am to 2 pm.

TWO ARRESTED IN CARTER COUNTY AFTER LARGE AMOUNT OF METH WAS FOUND DURING TRAFFIC STOP

Two people have been taken into custody following a traffic stop in Carter County.

According to Sheriff Alonzo Bradwell, on Wednesday, members of the Carter County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on U.S. Highway 60. During the stop, a K9 team was deployed and indicated the presence of an illegal substance odor.

Deputies conducted a search of the vehicle, where they found a large quantity of suspected methamphetamine.

Stanley Gillette of Fordland, Missouri and Linda Bowers, of Springfield, Missouri, were both arrested on a charge of delivery of a controlled substance. They were both held on no bond.

DATE SET FOR DUCK BLIND DRAWING AT WAPPAPELLO LAKE

A date has been announced for the annual duck blind drawing at Wappapello Lake.

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers the drawing and registration will be held at 9:00 a.m. on August 16th, at the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitors Center.

The registration fee is $15 and applicants are asked to use a credit or debit card.

Permitted duck blinds may be placed on the lake after Labor Day and must be removed from the lake, or transferred to a permitted storage cove, within two weeks of the closure of the zoned duck season.

BUTLER COUNTY WARNING SIRENS TO BE TESTED TODAY

Don’t be surprised if you hear sirens today in Butler County.

According to the Butler County Emergency Management Office, the county’s outdoor warning sirens are scheduled to be tested today at noon.

Officials say that the tests will be conducted every month on the first Monday.

ROYAL REGISTRATION SET FOR THIS WEEK IN TWIN RIVERS SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Twin Rivers School District will be holding a two day registration event for students this week.

Royal Registration is scheduled for noon to 6 pm on Tuesday for students whose parent or guardian’s last name begins with A-K and Thursday for students whose parent or guardian’s last name begins with L-Z. Both will be held at Twin Rivers High School in Broseley.

There will be booths set up to distribute student class schedules and allow students to have their school picture taken.

GRAND RE-OPENING IS TODAY FOR FOSTERADOPT CONNECT POPLAR BLUFF’S SAMMY’S WINDOW

A Poplar Bluff organization is re-opening a valuable resource for area foster families today.

FosterAdopt Connect Poplar Bluff will be hosting open houses for the grand re-opening of Sammy’s Window from 10 to 11:30 am and 5:30 to 7 pm. There will be cookies and punch available, as well as games and activities for the kids.

Sammy’s Window is a storefront where area foster families are able to shop for free.

Officials say that the shop will be open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday as well as from 9 am to noon on the 1st Saturday every month.

MISSING HAYTI MAN FOUND DEAD

A man who was reported missing earlier this week out of Hayti has been found dead.

Few details are available, but officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol say that 69 year old Andrew Page was found deceased.

An Endangered Silver Advisory was issued earlier this week after Page went missing.

No information has been released on where Page was found or a possible cause of death.

MISSOURI SALES TAX HOLIDAY BEGINS TODAY

Missouri’s annual back to school sales tax holiday begins today.

According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, the tax holiday will run from through this Sunday.

During this time, certain back-to-school purchases such as school supplies, computers, clothing and other qualifying items as defined by statute are exempt from all state and local sales tax or use tax taxes.

Eligible items include clothing that does not have a taxable value of more than $100 and personal computers that do not cost more than $1,500, among other items.

LINEUP FOR BONESTOCK 2025 TO BE ANNOUNCED TODAY

The Bonestock announcement event will be held today from 3 to 5 pm at Midway RV Park and Cabin Rentals in Fairdealing.

Bonestock 2025 will be held on Saturday, October 4th, at Ray Clinton Park in Poplar Bluff. This year, Bonestock will be raising money to help local veterans.

TEEN FLOWN TO MEMPHIS HOSPITAL FOLLOWING CRASH NEAR RISCO

A Risco teenager was flown to a regional hospital Thursday following a crash in Dunklin County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a 16 year old male was driving on Dunklin County Road 246 and ran off the side of the roadway, struck a ditch, and overturned.

The driver suffered moderate injuries and was flown to a Memphis Children’s Hospital for treatment. A passenger in the vehicle received minor injuries.

38TH ANNUAL PICTURES BY THE PEOPLE EXHIBITION BEGINS ON SATURDAY

Entries for the 38th Annual Pictures by the People contest will be available for viewing beginning on Sunday at the Margaret Harwell Art Museum in Poplar Bluff.

Photos for the contest have been accepted throughout the summer from local and area photographers. There will be a top prize of $100 for the best overall photo, which will also become a part of the museum’s permanent collection.

The opening reception and ice cream social has been scheduled for 5 to 7 pm on Sunday. The exhibition will be available for viewing through August 31st.

The Timothy Foundation will be hosting a Back to School Bash on Saturday in Poplar Bluff.

PATTERSON MAN CHARGED WITH CHILD MOLESTATION AND STATUTORY SODOMY

Wayne County authorities have arrested an area man on multiple charges, including child molestation.

Officials with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that James Penrod, of Patterson, was arrested on Monday following an investigation.

According to a Probable Cause Statement, Penrod is accused of inappropriate contact with multiple underage victims over a long span of time.

Penrod is facing charges including child molestation, stautory sodomy, and statutory rape, among others.

POPLAR BLUFF PARKS AND RECREATION TO HOST BACK TO SCHOOL BASH THIS WEEKEND

The Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation Department’s big end of summer event is this weekend.

The 2025 Back to School Bash has been scheduled for 9 am to noon on Saturday at Whiteley Park in Poplar Bluff.

There will be a foam party, yard games, a water slide, and fun for the entire family. Registration is open for local organizations who want to give away school supplies at the event.

The 17th Annual Mule Skinner Golf Tournament is coming up this week.

PIGGOTT MAN FACING CHARGE OF POSSESSION OR USE OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE MATERIAL

A Northeast Arkansas man has been taken into custody following an investigation into a video uploaded to the internet.

According to the Jonesboro Police Department, the investigation began with a cyber tip that was submitted by the Arkansas State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Division regarding a video shared to an instagram account.

The video showed inappropriate material involving a juvenile.

A search warrant led to police identifying the user as John Glass of Piggott.

Glass was taken into custody last week and is facing a charge of possession or use of child sexual abuse material.

His bond was set at $50,000, cash only.

MALDEN AUTHORITIES ARREST AREA MAN ON WEAPON WARRANT

A Malden man is due in court today in connection to an incident from early May.

According to the Malden Police Department, on Tuesday, officers arrested 27 year old Javier Pratcher on a felony Dunklin County warrant for unlawful use of a weapon.

According to a probable cause affidavit, earlier this month a victim provided video footage that showed Pratcher pulling a firearm from his waistband and pointing it at the victim.

The victim said that Pratcher made multiple threats to them and their business during the incident and even threatened to kill them.

Pratcher’s initial court appearance is scheduled for this morning at 9 am.

ST. LOUIS MAN ARRESTED IN STODDARD COUNTY FOLLOWING INCIDENT AT AREA BUSINESS

Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested a St. Louis man following an incident this week at an area business.

According to a Probable Cause Affidavit, early Monday morning, an officer responded to the business for a male subject assaulting an employee.

The reporting party stated that the man had struck her arm while she tried to intervene in a domestic situation.

As the officer was arriving at the scene, they observed 23 year old Tony Love walking away. Love matched the description provided by the reporting party and the officer attempted to detain him.

Love actively resisted before he was secured. The officer found multiple lighters and a knife in Love’s possession.

Witnesses at the scene said that Love had made a threat to burn the building down and had punched the victim.

A warrant was issued for Love, charging him with assault - 4th degree, terrorist threat - 3rd degree, and resisting or interfering with an arrest, detention, or stop.

His bond was set at $15,000.

RIPLEY COUNTY FAIR BEGINS TODAY

The 50th Annual Ripley County Fair will kick off today. 

Officials say that the fair will be held today through Saturday at the Ripley County Fairgrounds, south of Doniphan.

Multiple activities are planned for the four day event, including a beauty pageant, carnival, truck and tractor pull, bake sale, and more.

TWO IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO SHOTS FIRED INVESTIGATION IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

Two Illinois residents have been taken into custody in New Madrid County in connection to a weekend shooting investigation.

According to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, early Saturday morning officers with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety responded to a report of shots fired near the intersection of General George E Day Drive and Brunt Boulevard.

A driver reported that the suspects had opened fire on his vehicle. The vehicle sustained multiple bullet strikes; however, no injuries were reported.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, however two arrests have been made: 21 year old James Taylor Jr. and a 17 year old juvenile, both of Cairo, Illinois.

Officials say that Taylor has been charged through New Madrid County for assault 1st, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and property damage with a bond of $500,000 cash only. He is currently in custody in Alexander County Illinois Jail awaiting extradition.

The juvenile has been turned over to Illinois Juvenile authorities.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, if you get a text message posing as MoDOT or the Missouri Department of Revenue threatening you to pay now, whether it's for a toll fee or a traffic violation fee, it's a scam.

MoDOT will never solicit you to pay a toll or traffic violation fee.

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN KILLED IN COLLISION NEAR GREENVILLE

Authorities have released information concerning a fatal weekend crash in Wayne County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that a 61 year old Poplar Bluff woman pulled into the path of an oncoming vehicle on US Highway 67 at Greenville Saturday afternoon.

Wayne County Coroner Mark Smith tells KWOC News that the woman has been identified as 61 year old Mildred Richardson. She was pronounced dead at the scene by a Wayne County assistant coroner.

No injuries were listed for the driver of the other vehicle.

COOLING ITEM GIVEAWAY TO BE HELD TODAY AT RIVER RADIO IN POPLAR BLUFF

River Radio and Missouri Highlands Health Care are teaming up today to distribute cooling items to area residents during the ongoing heatwave.

Beginning at 9:30 this morning, the River Radio parking lot in Poplar Bluff will be stocked with free box fans, bottled water, neck fans, and more.

Supplies are limited so area residents are encouraged to stop by River Radio early to pick up some items to help you stay cool.

FREE MEALS TO BE AVAILABLE THIS YEAR FOR TWIN RIVERS STUDENTS IN FISK AND QULIN

Twin Rivers elementary and middle school students will be getting free meals this year.

School officials have announced that for the upcoming school year, Twin Rivers is participating in the Community Eligibility Program at the Fisk and Qulin Elementary and Middle School campuses.

The program will serve meals to students at no cost and without the need for families to complete meal applications, giving students one breakfast and one lunch per day for free throughout the academic year.

MOTORCYCLE RIDER INJURED AFTER STRIKING ANIMAL ON ROADWAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

A motorcycle rider was transported to an area hospital Sunday evening after striking an animal in Stoddard County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident occurred shortly after 8 pm Sunday on Route K near Leora.

The driver, identified as a 42 year old male from Pacific, Missouri, received serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to a Dexter hospital.

FREE STUDENT ATHLETE PHYSICALS SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK IN POPLAR BLUFF

Poplar Bluff High School and Junior High student athletes can get a free physical done this week at the High School.

Physicals will be conducted beginning at 5:30 pm on Thursday, July 31st for athletes in the 7th and 8th grades, beginning at 6:30 pm for 9th and 10th grades, and beginning at 7:30 pm for 11th and 12th grades.

OVER TWO MONTH ROAD PROJECT BEGINS TODAY NEAR COOTER

Route O in Pemiscot County will be closed for over two months beginning today so construction crews can replace a box culvert under the roadway.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of roadway being closed is located from County Road 559 to County Road 561 near Cooter.

Weather permitting, work will start today with completion anticipated by Thursday, October 2nd.

EXCESSIVELY HOT TEMPERATURES FORECAST FOR THE EARLY PART OF THIS WEEK

Excessively hot temperatures are once again forecast for the early part of this week.

According to the National Weather Service, highs on Monday are expected to be in the upper 90’s, with Tuesday high’s approaching or possibly hitting triple digits.

Heat indices are also forecast to be near 110 degrees both days.

A cooling center has been established in Poplar Bluff at the Butler County Health Department.

Cooling Centers are also available at the Ripley County Library in Doniphan and the Bloomfield Public Library.

Remember to check with the centers before heading there to learn about current requirements and hours.

ONE TEEN DEAD, TWO OTHERS INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH

A Puxico teenager has died following a side by side crash early Friday morning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 16 year old male was driving the vehicle shortly before 2 am Friday on Stoddard County Road 291 when the vehicle failed to negotiate a turn, ran off the roadway, and overturned.

A 15 year old female passenger in the vehicle was later pronounced dead by a Stoddard County Deputy Coroner.

The driver received minor injuries and a 14 year old passenger received moderate injuries in the crash. They were both transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

OFFICIALS URGE CAUTION FOR AREA RESIDENTS DUE TO HIGH TEMPERATURES THIS WEEK

Officials with the American Red Cross are urging Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas residents to be cautious with the rising temperatures this week.

According to the Red Cross, everyone is at risk when temperatures rise; and the elderly and the very young are most susceptible to heat and heat-related illnesses. Signs of heat-related illnesses include nausea, dizziness, flushed or pale skin, heavy sweating and headaches.

Persons with heat-related illness should be moved to a cool place, given cool water to drink and ice packs or cool wet cloths should be applied to the skin. If a victim refuses water, vomits or loses consciousness, call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number immediately.

Everyone is advised to take extra precautions if you plan to work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WEEKEND MOTORCYCLE CRASH

A motorcycle crash over the weekend left a Poplar Bluff man with serious injuries.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 52 year old man was riding the motorcycle on Route T in Wayne County Saturday afternoon when the vehicle ran off the roadway and ejected the driver.

The man was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital for treatment.

FRIDAY MORNING CRASH INJURES ONE NEAR DEXTER

One man suffered serious injuries in a single vehicle crash Friday morning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 78 year old Dudley man was driving a Freightliner near Dexter when the vehicle ran off the right side of Highway F and overturned.

Officials say the driver had serious injuries and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

CARTER COUNTY SHERIFF ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIP AND COMMUNITY EVENTS

A Southeast Missouri Sheriff has announced a new program for area youth.

Carter County Sheriff Alonzo Bradwell tells KWOC News that he is establishing the Sheriff's Criminal Justice Scholarship, an initiative designed to foster interest in law enforcement among local youth and provide essential support for their educational and career aspirations.

The new scholarship offers direct financial aid for college-bound youth pursuing criminal justice along with a unique summer training intern position within the Sheriff's Office.

Bradwell says that the groundbreaking program aims to address the declining interest in the criminal justice field while actively improving community opportunity.

To fund the scholarship, Bradwell secured partnerships with the Ellsinore and Van Buren Superintendents to host two major community events. The events will feature an anti-bullying wrestling show at both schools, complete with live music and silent auctions.

The first event, “Clash on the Current,” will be held at the Van Buren High School on October 18th. Ticket sales from the wrestling events will partially fund the scholarship and the show, with all proceeds from the silent auctions directly benefiting the program. The partnering schools will retain all concession sales.

WOMAN FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A SOUTHEAST MISSOURI CRASH

A Hayti woman was flown from the scene of a single vehicle crash Thursday afternoon in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 47 year old woman was driving on Route K in Pemiscot County when her vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, and then overturned.

The woman, who was not wearing a safety device, suffered serious injuries in the crash and was flown to a Memphis hospital.

BOIL WATER ADVISORY ISSUED FOR SOME BUTLER COUNTY RESIDENTS

Some Butler County residents are now under a boil water advisory.

Trisha Rommel with Butler County Water District #3 tells KWOC News that the advisory is for customers who live in the Peaceful Acres subdivision, along County Roads 558 and 559, and Highway NN.

A cause for the advisory was not released.

POPLAR BLUFF PARENTS ASKED TO FILL OUT FORM IF THEIR KIDS WILL BE RIDING SCHOOL BUS THIS YEAR

Poplar Bluff parents are being asked to fill out a form to help the Poplar Bluff school district build and adjust routes for the upcoming school year.

The form is available at mules.me/BusStop and is for Poplar Bluff students in grades K through 12 as well as the Early Childhood Center who will be riding a school bus.

School officials say that Transportation Department staff will be available during open houses next month to answer any questions parents may have.

POPLAR BLUFF AMERICAN LEGION POST #153 TO HOST ADULT AND SENIOR CITIZEN DANCE THIS WEEKEND

A Poplar Bluff organization will be hosting a special event this weekend.

Poplar Bluff American Legion Post #153 will be presenting the Summer Nights Adult and Senior Citizen Dance on Saturday.

LIVING HISTORY EVENT SHOWCASING CIVIL WAR TIMES SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND AT STARS AND STRIPES MUSEUM

The Stars and Stripes Museum in Bloomfield will be the location of an event this weekend showcasing the experiences of those who lived during the Civil War.

Occupy Bloomfield: A Civil War Living History Event has been scheduled for 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, July 26, at the Museum.

Union and Confederate Civil War living historians will be showcasing an impressive array of activities from the Civil War.

Organizers say that attendees can look forward to demonstrations with cannons and other artillery, as well as displays of engineer tools that played a crucial role during the war.

The event will also include infantry and cavalry impressions, along with civilian portrayals, providing a comprehensive glimpse into the diverse experiences of those who lived through the pivotal period in American history.

DATES SET FOR OPEN HOUSE AND ORIENTATIONS IN THE POPLAR BLUFF R-1 SCHOOL DISTRICT

Parents in Poplar Bluff will have the opportunity to learn more about the schools their children will be attending this fall during a series of open houses scheduled for next month.

The Poplar Bluff High School Open House is set for Thursday, August 14th, followed by Freshman Orientation on the 15th.

Early Childhood Meet the teacher visits are scheduled for August 15th, 18th, and 19th.

Open houses will be held for the four elementary schools as well as the 4th through 8th grades on Monday, August 18th.

The Kindergarten and Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center Open Houses are set for August 19th.

The first day of school has been scheduled for Wednesday, August 20th.

MISSOURI SALES TAX HOLIDAY BEGINS AUGUST 1ST

Missouri’s annual back to school sales tax holiday will begin next month.

According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, the tax holiday will run from Friday, August 1st through Sunday, August 3rd.

During this time, certain back-to-school purchases such as school supplies, computers, clothing and other qualifying items as defined by statute are exempt from all state and local sales tax or use tax taxes.

Eligible items include clothing that does not have a taxable value of more than $100 and personal computers that do not cost more than $1,500, among other items.

POPLAR BLUFF HOUSING AUTHORITY TO HOST BLOCK PARTY

The Poplar Bluff Housing Authority will be throwing a block party in early August.

The National Night Out Block Party will be held from 5 to 8 pm on August 5th at the Housing Authority on North E Street.

The free event will include food, games, a petting zoo, music, family activities, and more.

Officials say that the Block Party is to promote strong police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.

RUN 4 THE ARTS SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 6TH

A date has been set for the 10th annual Run 4 the Arts hosted by Three Rivers College.

The four-mile run or walk, along with a one-mile walk, will be held at 8 am on Saturday, September 6th at the College’s Poplar Bluff Campus. The course will begin and end in front of the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.

All funds from the event will go to benefit Three Rivers fine arts scholarships.

DONIPHAN FIRE DEPARTMENT TO HOST PANCAKE BREAKFAST FUNDRAISER IN AUGUST

The Doniphan Fire Department has scheduled a fundraiser for August to raise funds for new equipment.

The Pancake Breakfast fundraiser will be held from 7 to 11 am on August 30th at the Doniphan Firehouse. A plate of pancakes and sausage, along with a drink, will be available for five dollars.

Firefighters will also be available to meet with kids and give them tours of the fire trucks.

All proceeds from the event will go towards the purchase of new equipment for the Doniphan Fire Department.

CARTER COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE RECEIVES GRANT FOR NEW EQUIPMENT

A Southeast Missouri Sheriff’s Department has received a grant for new equipment to help keep officers safe.

According to Carter County Sheriff Alonzo Bradwell, the Carter County Sheriff’s Office received a grant from the Southeast Coalition for Roadway Safety, providing patrol deputies with "Guardian Angel Elite Series" equipment.

The equipment are wearable safety lights designed for enhanced visibility, particularly for law enforcement and emergency services.

ELLSINORE WOMAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE COUNTS OF CHILD ENDANGERMENT

A woman has been arrested in Carter County on multiple counts of child endangerment.

According to Carter County Sheriff Alonzo Bradwell, on Monday, investigators conducted a well-being check on a residence that contained very small children.

During the check, deputies discovered conditions that were deemed hazardous. Bradwell says that the environment was determined to be severely unsanitary and unfit for habitation.

The children in the home were removed and placed in a secure location.

The parent of the children, identified as Alpine Brooks, of Elsinore, was arrested on three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

She was held in the Carter County Jail on no bond.

RIPLEY COUNTY FAIR TO BEGIN ON JULY 30TH

Preparations are underway for the 50th Annual Ripley County Fair.

Officials say that the fair will be held this year from July 30th through August 2nd at the Ripley County Fairgrounds, south of Doniphan.

Multiple activities are planned for the four day event, including a beauty pageant, carnival, truck and tractor pull, bake sale, and more.

Parents in Poplar Bluff are being reminded to complete their children’s annual registration for Poplar Bluff Schools.

DUNKLIN COUNTY OFFICIALS WARNING OF SCAMMER GOING DOOR TO DOOR POSING AS A SATELLITE TV EMPLOYEE

Officials in Dunklin county are warning area residents to watch out for a possible scammer in your neighborhood.

According to the Dunklin County Sheriff’s Office, they have received multiple complaints about an individual posing as a DIRECTV or Dish Network employee, going door to door and claiming he can help lower your bill.

Officials say that the reports have come from the Malden area and the individual does not represent DIRECTV or Dish Network.

If the individual does come to your residence, do not let them in your home or give them any money or personal information.

SHOULDER REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS ON US ROUTE 60 IN CARTER COUNTY THROUGH OCTOBER

U.S. Route 60 in Southeast Missouri will be reduced to one lane for over three months as contractor crews perform shoulder repairs. 

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route AM in Howell County to Route Y in Carter County.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Thursday, October 30.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE UNDERWAY ON ROUTE 61 IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

Route 61 in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane for most of this week so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform bridge maintenance.

Officials say that the bridge is located from Bowen Street to Division Street in Steele.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, through Thursday.

FEMA DEADLINE IS TODAY TO APPLY FOR INDIVIDUAL ASSISTANCE FROM MARCH STORMS

Homeowners in several Southeast Missouri counties are running out of time to apply for assistance from FEMA for damage they received in the storms this past March.

According to FEMA officials, homeowners and renters who were affected by the March 14th and 15th disaster in 18 counties, including Butler, Carter, Ripley, and Wayne, may be eligible.

The deadline to apply for FEMA Individual Assistance from that storm system is today.

You can still ask for additional assistance, as long as you submit an initial application before the deadline.

The fastest way to apply is at DisasterAssistance.gov. You may also apply by calling FEMA at 1-800-621-3362.

CARTER COUNTY MAN SENTENCED TO THREE DECADES IN PRISON FOR PRODUCING CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE MATERIAL

A Carter County man has been sentenced to three decades in prison for producing child sexual abuse material.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, in December, 53 year old Clinton Rongey was convicted of one count of sexual exploitation of a minor.

Evidence and testimony at the trial showed that between February and November of 2023, Rongey produced more than 100 images containing child sexual abuse material.

On Monday, a US District Judge sentenced Rongey to 30 years in prison.

AREA RESIDENTS REMINDED TO KEEP THEIR PETS OUT OF THE HEAT

With a heat wave enveloping the area, residents are being reminded to make sure their pets are safe.

You should never leave your pet in a parked car. Even with the window cracked, temperatures inside the car quickly rise to dangerous levels.

You should not exercise with your pet when it is too hot outside and also do not take your pet to crowded events.

If your pet is going to be outside, make sure they have access to shade and plenty of water.

OZARK BORDER ANNUAL MEETING SCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 8TH

The annual membership meeting of the Ozark Border Electric Cooperative will be conducted next month.

The meeting will be held at 2:30 pm on Friday, August 8th at the Ozark Border Headquarters on South Westwood Boulevard in Poplar Bluff.

Members will be voting for the Board of Directors, with three seats being contested. The first will see incumbent Judy Lunsford taking on Gary Melton and Tod Spradley for the District 2 seat. Incumbent Bill Hager will be facing Derek Boyers for the District 3 seat.

The other race is in District 4, where incumbent Greg Lintz is being challenged by Chad Payne. Each race is for a three year term.

Voting will be conducted on multiple dates and locations during the week in the leadup to the meeting. Voting and registration will be available for all members on Monday, August 4th at the Malden Ozark Border Office, on August 5th at the Puxico Office, on August 6th at the Van Buren Office, and on August 7th at the Doniphan Office. Those four locations will be open for voting on their respective dates from 9 am to 3 pm.

Voting will be available at the Poplar Bluff Ozark Border Electric Headquarters on Friday, August 8th from 7 am to 2 pm.

RIPLEY COUNTY GIVEN FAIR RATING IN NEW AUDIT

Ripley County has been assessed a fair rating according to a new report from the Missouri State Auditor’s Office.

State Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick says that the audit found issues in the Sheriff's Office, the Public Administrator's Office, and with the county's fuel use logs.

Two former members of the Ripley County Sheriff's Office were arrested earlier this year and are facing criminal charges for stealing guns from an evidence locker.

Fitzpatrick says that the report shows how they may have thought they could get away with it because of a failure to maintain an accurate seized property log for at least a decade. He added that the new sheriff has made keeping an accurate inventory a top priority, which will play a key role in preventing theft like this from happening again.

The audit also found the Sheriff's Office does not issue receipt slips for all money received, use pre-numbered bond forms, or reconcile receipts to deposits. As the report notes, the failure to do so increases the risk that loss, theft, or misuse of money received could occur and go undetected.

Another finding in the report notes how county fuel use logs are not complete and maintained for all vehicles, reviewed for reasonableness, or reconciled to fuel purchases.

CULVERT REPLACEMENT SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK IN DEXTER

Route AD in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Stone Brooke Drive to North Outer Road in Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

HOT AND HUMID TEMPERATURES EXPECTED THIS WEEK IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 

Excessive heat and humidity is expected to cause dangerous conditions this week in Southeast Missouri.  

According to the National Weather Service, heat index values could reach as high as 110 degrees, for several days in a row for portions of our listening area.  

The heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities. 

Everyone is reminded to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.  

Take extra precautions if you have to work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours.

DATE SET FOR POPLAR BLUFF KINDERGARTEN CENTER OPEN HOUSE 

A date has been set for the upcoming open house at the Poplar Bluff Kindergarten Center.

ALMOST TWO MONTH LONG PAVEMENT REPAIR PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY ON ROUTE 142 IN BUTLER COUNTY

Route 142 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction beginning today so contractor crews can perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route 53 to Route HH near Poplar Bluff.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Friday, September 12. 

ROYAL REGISTRATION DATE SET FOR TWIN RIVERS SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Twin Rivers School District has announced that it will be holding a two day registration event for students next month.

Royal Registration is scheduled for noon to 6 pm on Tuesday, August 5th for students whose parent or guardian’s last name begins with A-K and Thursday, August 7th for students whose parent or guardian’s last name begins with L-Z. Both will be held at Twin Rivers High School in Broseley.

There will be booths set up to distribute student class schedules and allow students to have their school picture taken.

Northbound Interstate 55 will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction for part of this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform guardrail and pavement repairs.  

The work zone is located from mile marker 5.8 to mile marker 6.8, near Steele.

APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED FOR NEW HIGHWAY PATROL RECRUIT CLASS 

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is seeking applicants for its 126th Recruit Class. 

Highway Patrol officials tell KWOC News that the selection process is a multi-phase testing procedure which includes a written examination, a physical fitness for duty assessment, polygraph examination, background investigation, and oral interview board. 

To be eligible, candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent and be 21 years of age upon graduating from the Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy.

SHOOTING SPORTS YOUTH TRAINING CLASS SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND 

Area children wanting to participate in shooting sports will have a chance to learn critical safety techniques at a class this weekend. 

A shooting sports safety training class for 4-H will be held from 9 am to 2 pm on Saturday, July 19th at the Butler County University of Missouri Extension Office on Lindsay Avenue in Poplar Bluff.

The Annual Mule Skinner Golf Tournament is coming up in August. 

The four person scramble tournament will be held on Friday, August 1st at the Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff. Lunch will begin at 11:30 am with a shotgun start at 1 pm.

DATE SET FOR DUCK BLIND DRAWING AT WAPPAPELLO LAKE

A date has been announced for the annual duck blind drawing at Wappapello Lake. 

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers the drawing and registration will be held at 9:00 a.m. on August 16th, at the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitors Center. 

The registration fee is $15 and applicants are asked to use a credit or debit card. 

Permitted duck blinds may be placed on the lake after Labor Day and must be removed from the lake, or transferred to a permitted storage cove, within two weeks of the closure of the zoned duck season.

DANGEROUS HEAT CONDITIONS TO BEGIN IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS 

Excessive heat conditions could pose danger to many residents in Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas. 

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a dangerous, prolonged heatwave will begin today and continue through at least the middle of next week. 

In Poplar Bluff temperatures are expected to top out in the mid 90’s, with heat index values reaching up to 105 degrees during this time period. 

Officials say that dangerously high temperatures and humidity could quickly cause heat stress or heat stroke if precautions are not taken. 

If you have to be outside for work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. 

Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

FREE STUDENT ATHLETE PHYSICALS SCHEDULED FOR THIS MONTH IN POPLAR BLUFF 

Poplar Bluff High School and Junior High student athletes can get a free physical done this month at the High School. 

Physicals will be conducted beginning at 5:30 pm on Thursday, July 31st for athletes in the 7th and 8th grades, beginning at 6:30 pm for 9th and 10th grades, and beginning at 7:30 pm for 11th and 12th grades.

According to Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation, the final day for teams to be registered for the league is July 20th. Leagues for fall youth baseball and softball will be available for children from 7 to 12 years old.

NEW 11 MILLION DOLLAR FACILITY TO BRING OVER 70 JOBS TO POPLAR BLUFF 

A new 85-bed skilled nursing facility is coming to Poplar Bluff, bringing over 70 new jobs to the area. 

KWOC News spoke with Poplar Bluff City Manager Robert Knodell, about what this means for Poplar Bluff. 

“We know that there’s been a need and a demand here in our community for additional choices when it comes to skilled nursing for elderly loved ones that’s always a difficult choice for families. We know we’ve had a number of families here locally that have taken their loved ones to facilities and other communities that they felt would best meet their needs and we want those to be met here in Poplar Bluff. Conversations began about potentially a new skilled nursing facility that would have 85 beds all private rooms they will accept patients either participate in Medicaid program or private pay and above all this represents an $11 million investment in our community here in Poplar Bluff, 70 to 90 new jobs in our community and we’re excited that the conversations that government leaders here locally began to have with potential nursing home developers came to fruition. This is a highly regulated industry and we had to complete a very difficult process to get regulatory approval from the state of Missouri.  One thing about this project that’s really exciting is that the community truly came together very early on the Butler County commission adopted a resolution and support of this project as did the Poplar Bluff City Council, our Mayor, our Mayor Pro Tem wrote separate letters of support strong support from State Representative Hardy Billington, Senator Jason Bean, and our executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce, healthcare leaders, and citizens that simply want this additional choice for our citizens here.” 

Construction on the new skilled nursing facility is expected to begin later this year, and is expected to be completed in the first half of 2026.

DONIPHAN WOMAN ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGES IN BUTLER COUNTY 

A Doniphan woman has been taken into custody in Butler County on drug charges.

According to an arrest report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 36 year old Amanda Labryer was arrested Tuesday evening on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance for methamphetamine. 

Labryer is also facing charges of possession of drug paraphernalia. 

Following the arrest, she was taken to the Butler County Jail, and has since been released.

DICE RUN TO BE HELD TO RAISE MONEY FOR ST. JUDE CHILDREN’S RESEARCH HOSPITAL 

The 11th Annual Ride for a Cure Dice Run in memory of Larry Maronay has been scheduled for next month. 

Registration for the event will begin at 10 am on August 23rd at the Dexter Elks Lodge, with the ride beginning at 11 am. Entry fee is $20 per bike and $10 for an additional rider with a meal included at the end of the ride. 

All proceeds will benefit the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

ARKANSAS OFFICERS TO CRACK DOWN ON SPEEDING FOR THE REST OF THIS MONTH AS A PART OF NEW CAMPAIGN 

Law enforcement officers across Arkansas will be stepping up speeding stops as a part of a new campaign going on this month.

According to the Arkansas State Police, the high-visibility enforcement campaign, Speeding Slows You Down will be conducted through the end of this month. 

State Police Troopers, sheriff’s deputies and city police officers will join this campaign by providing high-visibility patrols and issuing speeding citations to drivers breaking the law. 

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, local roads are more dangerous than highways for speeders. In 2023, 88% of all speeding-related traffic fatalities in the United States occurred on local routes other than interstates. 

Drivers in neighborhoods, school zones, or secondary roads should be especially aware of this campaign and their speed as Arkansas law enforcement officers will be concentrating their efforts in these areas.

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE TO HOST FRESHMAN TOUR DAY ON AUGUST 8TH 

Incoming students to Three Rivers College will have the opportunity to explore the campus at an event in early August. 

Students are being invited to drop by the Welcome Center at the TRC Poplar Bluff location between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday, August 8 for a campus tour and to pick up their books.

POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL OFFICIALS RELEASE BACK TO SCHOOL CHECKLIST FOR AREA PARENTS 

We are a little more than a month away from kids returning back to school across the area.

To help parents get ready for when the school year starts, Poplar Bluff School officials have released a new “Back to School Checklist.” 

Officials say the checklist provides a step-by-step guide to help parents navigate all the essential tasks for a successful start to the new school year. 

The checklist includes registration details, health preparations, communication tools, and suggestions for daily routines.

ESSEX MAN INJURED IN EARLY MORNING SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH 

An Essex man was injured early Saturday morning in a single vehicle crash. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 29 year old man was driving on Highway FF, shortly before 8 am, when his vehicle ran off the side of the roadway and overturned, ejecting the driver.

The man suffered serious injuries in the crash and was flown to a Memphis hospital.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF 

Northbound Business Route 67 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction beginning today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.  

The section of roadway affected is located from Route 53 to 11th Street in Poplar Bluff.  

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday. Officials say the work zone will remain in place until work is completed.

ELLINGTON MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGES IN REYNOLDS COUNTY 

An Ellington man has been taken into custody in Reynolds County on drug charges. 

According to an arrest report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 47 year old Jason Hampton was arrested Sunday evening on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance for methamphetamine. 

Wombles is also facing charges of possession of drug paraphernalia. 

Following the arrest, Hampton was held in the Reynolds County Jail, and has since been released.

CREWS TO PERFORM BRIDGE MAINTENANCE THIS WEEK IN NEW MADRID COUNTY 

Northbound Interstate 55 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane with a 14-foot width restriction this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.   

The bridge is located in between mile markers 50.5 and 51.2 near New Madrid.  

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through Thursday.

MENARDS HOSTING FOOD DRIVE TO BENEFIT LOCAL FOOD PANTRY 

A Poplar Bluff area business is accepting food donations to be used in the community. 

The Poplar Bluff Menards is partnering with area food pantries by serving as a drop off location for donations through the end of this month. 

Menards also offers a wide variety of non-perishable food items that can be donated immediately in their grocery department, such as boxes of cereal and cans of soup.

FEMA DEADLINE APPROACHING TO APPLY FOR INDIVIDUAL ASSISTANCE FROM MARCH STORMS

Homeowners in several Southeast Missouri counties are running out of time to apply for assistance from FEMA for damage they received in the storms this past March.

According to FEMA officials, homeowners and renters who were affected by the March 14th and 15th disaster in 18 counties, including Butler, Carter, Ripley, and Wayne, may be eligible.

The deadline to apply for FEMA Individual Assistance from that storm system is July 22nd.

You can still ask for additional assistance, as long as you submit an initial application before the deadline.

The fastest way to apply is at DisasterAssistance.gov. You may also apply by calling FEMA at 1-800-621-3362.

WORKER DIES AFTER ACCIDENT AT POPLAR BLUFF AREA BUSINESS

A worker has died following an accident at a Butler County business.

Butler County Coroner Jim Akers confirms to KWOC News that 72 year old Dale Rowe, of Dexter, fell off of a ladder while working on the HVAC system at the Taco John’s in Poplar Bluff at around noon on Friday.

Rowe, who is also the Assistant Chief of the Dexter Fire Department, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Akers says that while the investigation into the death is ongoing, no foul play is suspected at this time.

POPLAR BLUFF PARKS AND RECREATION TO HOST FLAG FOOTBALL LEAGUE THIS FALL

Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation is now accepting applications for a flag football camp and league this summer and fall.

According to officials, there will be a flag football camp for kids in 1st through 4th grade from July 28th through the 30th at Poplar Bluff High School.

League play will follow from September 6th through October 11th and there will be two divisions, one for 1st and 2nd graders and the other for 3rd and 4th graders.

The cost is $20 per child to register, which includes the camp, league play, a t-shirt and team jersey. Attendance at the camp is not mandatory to participate in the league.

Registration will be available through August 15th.

CULVERT REPLACEMENT TO FORCE CLOSURE OF ROAD IN DEXTER TODAY

Business 60 in Stoddard County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

The section of roadway being closed is located from Ellare Lane to Smith Avenue in Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Route P in Pemiscot County will be closed for most of this week so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace a culvert under the roadway.

SUSPECT TAKEN INTO CUSTODY FOLLOWING PURSUIT AND ATTEMPTED WATER ESCAPE IN CARTER COUNTY

A suspect is in custody following an overnight pursuit in Carter County.

According to Carter County Sheriff Alonzo Bradwell, overnight Wednesday night, members of the Sheriff's Office responded to multiple reports of property damage caused by an erratic driver, who eventually crashed their vehicle.

Following the crash, the suspect stole another vehicle in the area of M Highway, leading law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit.

The pursuit concluded when the suspect drove the stolen vehicle into a river, then exited the vehicle and attempted to escape by swimming.

Early Thursday morning, the suspect was sighted and taken into custody by members of the Carter County Sheriff's Office and the Van Buren Police Department.

Bradwell says that preliminary assessments indicate the suspect caused significant property damage prior to and during the pursuit, including driving over empty tents that were approximately 20 feet away from a camping family.

The suspect is being held on a 24-hour hold pending formal charges, at which point their identity will be released.

DEXTER GRILLE IT UP SET FOR THIS WEEKEND

Multiple attractions are scheduled for the 9th Annual Dexter Grille It Up this weekend

The event will begin at 8 am on Saturday at East Park in Dexter.

PARAGOULD MAN ARRESTED ON RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT CHARGES

A Paragould man is in custody on a rape charge.

According to court documents, 21 year old Jaxon Anderson, of Paragould, was arrested earlier this week in connection to an investigation involving a juvenile.

The victim disclosed acts that would constitute rape and sexual assault.

The investigation led to the arrest of Anderson, who made incriminating statements during an interview.

Anderson has been charged with two counts of rape and sexual assault in the second degree.

He is being held in the Greene County Jail on a one million dollar bond.

MULTIPLE EAST CARTER SCHOOLS SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN $49 MILLION LITERACY GRANT

Multiple schools in a Southeast Missouri school district have been selected among 80 early learning programs and public schools to receive funding and professional services through the U.S. Department of Education’s Comprehensive Literacy State Development grant.

The five-year $49 million grant — more than doubles the amount of the previous CLSD grant awarded in 2020 — will provide statewide opportunities for early learning programs and K-12 schools to receive services and funds that directly align to DESE’s Read, Lead, Exceed initiative.

Services will include high-quality professional development for administrators, literacy coaches and teachers, access to CLSD literacy specialists, and family literacy support and resources.

In Southeast Missouri, the East Carter R-2 Early Childhood Program, Elementary, Middle, and High School were all chosen for the program.

POPLAR BLUFF LIBRARY TO HOST SPECIAL PROGRAM ON BIRDS SATURDAY

The Poplar Bluff Library will be hosting a special program on birds this weekend.

The Library is teaming up with Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation and the Dickerson Park Zoo for “Birds of Prey” which will introduce children to a nocturnal raptor, a diurnal raptor, and a scavenger as well as explain to them the birds unique role in keeping our ecosystem balanced.

There will be two sessions on Saturday at the Library’s main branch that children can attend, one at 11:30 am and the other at 1 pm.

SEVEN PEOPLE INJURED, INCLUDING SIX CHILDREN, IN POPLAR BLUFF AREA CRASH

Seven people were injured, including multiple children, in connection to a two vehicle crash Wednesday morning in the Poplar Bluff area.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at around 8 am when a Chevrolet Equinox struck a stationary vehicle on Marble Hill Road, north of White Oak Drive.

The driver of the Equinox, identified as a 46 year old Poplar Bluff man, along with six children, ages 4 to 9, all suffered serious injuries in the crash and were taken by ambulance to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

There were no occupants listed for the stationary vehicle.

DONIPHAN MAN PRONOUNCED DEAD FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH

A Doniphan man has died following a single vehicle crash on Tuesday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 64 year old man was driving on US Highway 67, four miles south of Cherokee Pass, when his vehicle travelled off the right side of the roadway, struck a driveway, and overturned.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by the Madison County coroner.

DATE SET FOR FRESHMAN ORIENTATION AT POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL

Freshman orientation is set to be held in August at Poplar Bluff High School.

Officials say that orientation will begin at 8 am on Friday, August 15th.

Students will get to learn more about life at the High School, get their class schedule, pick up their school laptop, learn the layout of the campus, and meet their advisory class.

The first day of school will be on August 20th.

SHOOTING SPORTS YOUTH TRAINING CLASS SCHEDULED FOR THIS MONTH

Area children wanting to participate in shooting sports will have a chance to learn critical safety techniques at a class this month.

A shooting sports safety training class for 4-H will be held from 9 am to 2 pm on Saturday, July 19th at the Butler County University of Missouri Extension Office on Lindsay Avenue in Poplar Bluff.

The class is for kids aged 8 to 18 and there is a limited number of spots available. Lunch will also be provided.

ANNUAL POLLARD PICNIC SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY

The date for the Annual Pollard Picnic in Northeast Arkansas is coming up.

The event will be held on Saturday, July 12th in Pollard, Arkansas, and will feature multiple attractions for the entire family as well as the annual Pollard Beauty Pageants.

The pageants will begin at 10 am and continue through the rest of the day. There will be multiple divisions from birth through 18 years old. The entry fee for each division is $30.

There is no pre-registration, entries should arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled beginning of their pageant.

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK BY A VEHICLE EARLY TUESDAY MORNING IN POPLAR BLUFF

A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle early Tuesday in Poplar Bluff.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 29 year old man, from Poplar Bluff, was walking in the roadway in the area of Westwood Boulevard and West Pine Street when he was hit by the vehicle.

The incident occurred at around 5:20 am Tuesday morning.

The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

KENNETT MAN SENTENCED TO OVER TEN YEARS IN PRISON FOR SELLING METH

A Dunklin County man has been sentenced to over a decade in prison for selling meth.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 53 year old Clayton Barnes, of Kennett, pled guilty in April to two counts of distribution of methamphetamine.

He admitted to selling a total of over 150 grams of meth over two different instances in 2023.

Officials say that Barnes qualified as a career offender, having prior convictions that include a 2009 conviction for selling eight grams of cocaine base and a 2020 conviction for selling 14 grams of meth.

On Tuesday, Barnes was sentenced by a US District Judge to 128 months in prison.

DRIVER IN CUSTODY AFTER CRASHING INTO SOUTHEAST MISSOURI HOME

A driver has been taken into custody after a vehicle crashed into a residence Monday night in Caruthersville.

According to Caruthersville Police Chief Jerry Hudgens, shortly after 9 pm, officers responded to an area residence where they found the driver attempting to leave the area.

The driver was taken into custody and is being held in the Pemiscot County Jail.

Hudgens says that multiple charges are pending formal filing from the Pemiscot County Prosecutors Office.

Hudgens added that the incident remains an active and ongoing investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY ON ROUTE 67 IN BUTLER COUNTY

Northbound Route 67 in Butler County will be reduced today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from County Road 527 to County Road 429 near Poplar Bluff.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

EIGHT PEOPLE KILLED IN MISSOURI TRAFFIC CRASHES DURING HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Eight people were killed in traffic crashes in Missouri during the Independence Day holiday weekend.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, troopers worked 246 traffic crashes, which included 115 injuries and eight fatalities.

None of the fatalities were located in Southeast Missouri.

This year, troopers also made 114 DWI arrests over the holiday weekend.

Troopers also investigated nine boating crashes, which included four injuries and no fatalities.

OVER TWO WEEK ROAD PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY IN RIPLEY COUNTY

Contractor crews will be making driving surface improvements on Route B in Ripley County over the next couple of weeks.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the work zone is located from Route 142 to Route 160. A 12-foot width restriction will be in place while work is completed.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through Friday, July 25.
