PUXICO WOMAN INJURED IN EARLY MORNING SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH

A Puxico woman was injured early Monday morning in a single vehicle crash.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 48 year old woman was driving on Missouri Highway 51, shortly after midnight Monday morning, when her vehicle ran off the side of the roadway and struck a tree.

The woman suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

FREE STUDENT ATHLETE PHYSICALS SCHEDULED FOR THIS MONTH IN POPLAR BLUFF

Poplar Bluff High School and Junior High student athletes can get a free physical done this month at the High School.

Physicals will be conducted beginning at 5:30 pm on Thursday, July 31st for athletes in the 7th and 8th grades, beginning at 6:30 pm for 9th and 10th grades, and beginning at 7:30 pm for 11th and 12th grades.

PURSUIT LEADS TO ARREST OF DEXTER MAN IN STODDARD COUNTY

A Dexter man has been taken into custody following a pursuit over the holiday weekend.

According to a Probable Cause Affidavit, early Saturday morning an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop when the vehicle turned into an alley and sped off at a high rate of speed.

While going through the alley, the vehicle crashed into an electric pole. The vehicle then stopped and the driver exited the vehicle and fled behind a residence.

After a search of the area, the suspect, identified as 51 year old Randell Beck, of Dexter, was apprehended.

Beck is scheduled to appear in court this morning on charges of resisting an arrest, detention or stop, leaving the scene of an accident, operating a vehicle without a valid license, and receiving stolen property.

He was held in the Stoddard County Jail on a bond of $25,000 cash only.

The 2025 Fall Deer and Turkey Hunting Regulations and Information booklet has detailed information on fall deer and turkey hunting seasons, limits, permits, managed hunts, regulations, conservation areas to hunt, post-harvest instructions, chronic wasting disease updates, and more.

The Migratory Bird and Waterfowl Hunting Digest has detailed information on waterfowl hunting along with hunting doves and several other migratory game birds such as rail, snipe, and woodcock.

Both booklets are available where permits are sold and online at mdc.mo.gov.

ELLSINORE MAN ARRESTED ON FELONY DRUG CHARGE IN STODDARD COUNTY

An area man was arrested Monday morning on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 63 year old Wiley Gilkey, of Ellsinore, was taken into custody shortly before 11 am Monday on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine.

Gilkey is also facing charges of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, display plates of another, and no insurance.

Following the arrest, he was held at the Stoddard County Jail.

PAVEMENT REPAIR PROJECT UNDERWAY NEAR NEW MADRID

Route U in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction for the rest of this month as contractor crews perform an asphalt overlay.

The section of roadway affected is located from Route WW to County Road 730 near New Madrid.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily through Friday, August 1. While work is underway, flaggers will be in place to guide traffic.

DEXTER GRILLE IT UP SET FOR THIS WEEKEND

Multiple attractions are scheduled for the 9th Annual Dexter Grille It Up this weekend

POPLAR BLUFF PARKS AND RECREATION TO HOST BACK TO SCHOOL BASH IN AUGUST

The Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation Department has started planning for their end of summer event.

The 2025 Back to School Bash has been scheduled for 9 am to noon on Saturday, August 2nd at Whiteley Park in Poplar Bluff.

There will be a foam party, yard games, a water slide, and fun for the entire family. Registration is open for local organizations who want to give away school supplies at the event.

ROYAL REGISTRATION DATE SET FOR TWIN RIVERS SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Twin Rivers School District has announced that it will be holding a two day registration event for students next month.

Royal Registration is scheduled for noon to 6 pm on Tuesday, August 5th for students whose parent or guardian’s last name begins with A-K and Thursday, August 7th for students whose parent or guardian’s last name begins with L-Z. Both will be held at Twin Rivers High School in Broseley.

There will be booths set up to distribute student class schedules and allow students to have their school picture taken.

CHILD INJURED AFTER BEING STRUCK BY A JET BOAT ON CURRENT RIVER

A child suffered minor injuries after being struck by a jet boat on Current River.

According to a report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the jet boat drifted over a 10 year old swimmer in the Deer Run area of Carter County at around 3:30 pm on Friday.

The child received minor injuries in the incident and was examined by emergency personnel at the scene.

BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY NEAR CATRON

Route D in New Madrid County will be closed for most of the rest of the year as contractor crews replace the bridge over Drainage Ditch Number 1. 

The bridge is located between Route JJ and Route W near Catron.

Work is beginning today with completion anticipated by Monday, December 1, weather permitting. This road will remain closed until the work is completed and a signed detour will be in place.

HIGHWAY PATROL PREPARING FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY TRAFFIC

With the Fourth of July coming up, troopers with the Missouri State Highway Patrol are preparing for an increase in travelers on Missouri’s roadways.

Officials tell KWOC News that the Highway Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. over the July Fourth holiday weekend. All available troopers will be patrolling Missouri’s roadways enforcing Missouri’s traffic laws in addition to being available to assist motorists.

During the 2024 counting period, 14 people were killed and 560 injured in Missouri in 1,366 traffic crashes. Troopers also arrested 149 people for driving while intoxicated.

Troopers will also be working on the state’s waterways to enforce Missouri’s boating laws and provide assistance where needed. Missouri’s boaters are being asked to do their part by remaining alert for other boats and swimmers, and being courteous on the water.

Last year there were 10 boating crashes, which included seven injuries and no fatalities during the holiday weekend.

The 2025 counting period for the July Fourth holiday will be from 6 p.m. today to 11:59 p.m. on Sunday.

JOE BROWN NAMED NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AT POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL 

Poplar Bluff High School has a new Athletic Director. 

Joe Brown, a veteran coach and longtime educator, has been named the new athletic director at Poplar Bluff High School. 

Brown, who spent nearly three decades in St. Louis as a teacher, administrator, and football coach, said he felt an immediate connection with the Poplar Bluff community when he interviewed for the position. 

Originally from Chicago, Brown came to Missouri to play college football and never looked back. He spent 24 years in the classroom and three years in administration, including a year as a Dean, while coaching football for 28 years. His coaching tenure included mentoring athletes who went on to play Division I and Professional Football, but his philosophy always focused on preparation, discipline, and attention to detail. 

Brown credits his success to the strength and example of his mother, who raised three children while working multiple jobs and eventually becoming a physical therapy nurse. 

As he takes the reins from former athletic director Kent Keith, Brown is focused on building on past successes while bringing new ideas to the table. 

With fall sports on the horizon and the school year fast approaching, Brown is eager to hit the ground running.

5K RUN AND WALK TO BE HELD IN POPLAR BLUFF ON INDEPENDENCE DAY

Poplar Bluff residents will be out celebrating the Fourth of July holiday coming up on Friday.

The Red, White, and Run 5K run and walk will begin at 7:30 am on Friday, July 4th at the Square in Downtown Poplar Bluff. Registration will begin at 7 am and the entry fee is $25.

There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each age division as well as a special prize for the best patriotic attire.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Poplar Bluff High School Cross Country Team.

To wrap up the day, the annual Poplar Bluff Independence Day Fireworks display will begin at around 9 pm in downtown Poplar Bluff.

PUBLIC HEARING SET FOR TODAY TO DISCUSS GRANT APPLICATION IN RIPLEY COUNTY

Ripley County will host a public hearing this morning to discuss a Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery program application.

The hearing is scheduled for 8:45 a.m. on Thursday, July 3rd, at the Ripley County Courthouse in Doniphan.

The county is sponsoring the application on behalf of the Doniphan Ripley County Library for a project to expand the library to better serve the community’s needs.

The proposed expansion will increase space for reading areas, public programming, technology access, and community gatherings. The total estimated project cost is expected to be at or above $500,000, and the County will be requesting up to $500,000 in CDBG funds to support the project.

DEADLINE COMING UP TO PURCHASE TAGS FOR BULKY ITEM PICKUP

Today is the final day for Poplar Bluff residents to purchase tags for this month’s Bulky Item Pickup.

Residents can purchase bulk item tags from the City Collector’s office at City Hall for $20. The tags entitle you to the removal of four bulk items, such as couches or refrigerators.

No construction materials or small items will be picked up and the program is for residential areas only.

Today is the final day to purchase item tags at City Hall to be included in next week’s pick up, which will be conducted on Tuesday, July 8th.

2ND ANNUAL BLACK RIVER DUCK DERBY SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY

This Saturday will be the date for the 2nd Annual Black River Duck Derby in Poplar Bluff.

The event will begin at 10 am on Saturday at the Vine Street Bridge.

Anyone who wants to participate can adopt a duck for $5 or a pack of five ducks for $20. The prize for 1st Place will be $500.

Proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Poplar Bluff chapter of Days for Girls.

FIREWORKS SAFETY TIPS

Many Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas communities will be holding fireworks celebrations this week, but some area residents will also be enjoying the festivities at home.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission has released some fireworks safety tips to help keep you and your family safe this Fourth of July.

The CPSC advises parents to never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks and always have adult supervision when kids of any age are playing with fireworks, including sparklers.

Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully and keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap. Also, never point or throw fireworks at another person.

Do not light fireworks in any areas where the sparks could ignite dry grass, leaves, or other potential fire fuel. Also remember to check with local ordinances and authorities for bans on fireworks and open burning.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING CAR FIRE IN SOUTHERN WAYNE COUNTY

Emergency crews responded to the scene of a fatal car fire Tuesday in Southern Wayne County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a vehicle travelled off the right side of Northbound US Highway 67, nine miles south of Greenville.

The vehicle then struck a ditch, overturned, and caught fire.

The driver, a 20 year old man from Wisconsin, was pronounced dead at the scene.

EMERGENCY CREWS RESPOND TO FATAL CRASH IN BUTLER COUNTY

One person was killed, and another four were injured in a two vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon

Two vehicles were involved in the crash near the intersection of Business Highway 60 and Route NN outside of Poplar Bluff.

A passenger in the second vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and two other passengers received serious injuries and were flown to a Memphis hospital.

A passenger in the first vehicle received minor injuries was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

BUTLER COUNTY SIREN TEST TO BE CONDUCTED ON THE FOURTH OF JULY

The monthly outdoor siren test for Butler County will be conducted this month on the 4th of July.

Officials say that the Poplar Bluff and Butler County outdoor siren test has been scheduled for noon on Friday.

During the test, all sirens will play God Bless America.

NORTHEAST ARKANSAS MAN CHARGED WITH NEGLIGENT HOMICIDE IN CONNECTION TO FATAL CRASH

A Northeast Arkansas man is facing multiple charges in connection to a fatal crash from last week.

The Arkansas State Police announced Tuesday that Special Agents with the ASP Criminal Investigation Division have arrested 25 year old Taylor Rhoades, of Pocahontas, in connection with a fatal crash on Interstate 555 near Trumann that resulted in the deaths of two Paragould residents.

Rhoades was driving northbound on I-555 when his vehicle struck two men who were standing near a car parked on the shoulder. 36 year old Tyler Slayton and 31 year old Jacob Ward, both of Paragould, were repairing a flat tire when they were fatally struck.

A Sheriff’s Deputy later observed Rhoades’ vehicle with significant damage and conducted a traffic stop. Evidence discovered during the stop linked the vehicle to the fatal incident.

Rhoades has been charged with Negligent Homicide, DWI, Careless or Prohibited Driving, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Injuries. He is currently being held in the Poinsett County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond.

TEENAGER INJURED AFTER STRIKING MULTIPLE OBJECTS DURING CRASH AND COMING TO REST UNDER A MODULAR HOME

A teenager only received moderate injuries after being involved in an extreme crash Monday night in Van Buren.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 19 year old man, from Ellisnore, was driving on Broadway Street when he drove through a low water dip, became airborne, traveled off the left side of the roadway, struck a utility pole, returned to the roadway, traveled off the right side of the roadway, and then struck an embankment and a stationary vehicle before coming to rest under a modular home.

Through all of that, the teen suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital by ambulance.

LAKE WAPPAPELLO STATE PARK IN WILLIAMSVILLE TO HOST MOVIE IN THE PARK THIS WEEKEND

Lake Wappapello State Park in Williamsville is hosting a movie showing this weekend.

Movie in the Park will begin at dusk on Saturday, July 5th at the amphitheater located at 8005 State Highway 172 in Williamsville.

POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL OFFICIALS RELEASE BACK TO SCHOOL CHECKLIST FOR AREA PARENTS

July has started which means kids will be returning to school before you know it.

To help parents get ready for when the school year starts, Poplar Bluff School officials have released a new “Back to School Checklist.”

Officials say the checklist provides a step-by-step guide to help parents navigate all the essential tasks for a successful start to the new school year.

POPLAR BLUFF BUDDY BALL TO HOST ENCHANTED FOREST BALL TONIGHT

Poplar Bluff Buddy Ball and PB Parks and Recreation will be hosting an Enchanted Forest Ball tonight.

Officials say the event is being held in honor of BuddyBall participants and friends in the community with mental, physical, and developmental disabilities. The event is open to anyone living with disabilities along with guests and their families.

The Ball is scheduled to begin at 5 pm at the Black River Coliseum. Tickets can be purchased for $20.

MAN FACING MULTIPLE CHARGES IN CONNECTION TO CRASH DURING PURSUIT IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

Updating a story we have been following for you, a Michigan man is facing multiple charges in connection to a pursuit over the weekend.

According to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Office, on Saturday, deputies were involved in a pursuit that ended when the suspect vehicle was involved in a collision with a deputy.

Both the deputy and suspect involved in the crash were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries.

The suspect, identified as Maurice Hill, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, appeared in court on Monday and has been charged with assault 1st degree, aggravated fleeing a stop or detention, and two counts of armed criminal action.

Hill pleaded not guilty and his bond was set at $500,000, cash or surety.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on July 7th.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI CITY AWARDED GRANT TO EVALUATE ITS DRINKING WATER SYSTEM

A Southeast Missouri city will be receiving over $37,000 in grant money to help improve the city’s infrastructure.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded a $37,500 Drinking Water Engineering Report Grant to the city of Malden to evaluate its drinking water system.

Malden will use the funding to identify improvements needed to continue meeting drinking water quality standards and provide reliable water service.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK ON INTERSTATE 55 IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

Southbound Interstate 55 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge repairs

The bridge is located between mile markers 51 and 53 near Kewanee.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and tomorrow.

TWO MONTH PAVEMENT REPAIR PROJECT UNDERWAY NEAR LILBOURN

Route E in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction for two months so contractor crews can perform pavement repairs. 

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of roadway being reduced is located from Route 114 near Morehouse to Route D near Lilbourn.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily through Friday, August 1.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A CRASH NEAR SIKESTON

A Poplar Bluff man was flown from the scene of a crash Friday morning near Sikeston.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 65 year old man was driving on US Highway 60 in New Madrid County when his vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway and overturned.

The man, who was not wearing a safety device, suffered serious injuries in the crash and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

MISSOURI FROGGING SEASON TO BEGIN TONIGHT

The beginning of frogging season in Missouri starts tonight.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, beginning at sunset tonight, those with a fishing permit or small-game hunting permit may frog for bullfrogs and green frogs.

The daily limit is eight frogs of both species combined and the possession limit is 16 frogs of both species combined. Only the daily limit may be possessed on waters and banks of waters where frogging.

Children 15 years old and under and Missouri residents 65-years old and older are not required to have a permit.

Frog season will come to an end on October 31st.

DEPUTY AND SUBJECT TRANSPORTED TO AREA HOSPITAL AFTER CRASH DURING PURSUIT

A Southeast Missouri deputy and another subject were transported to area hospitals over the weekend after both were injured during a pursuit.

According to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 11 am on Saturday, deputies heard radio traffic about a possible stolen truck on Interstate 55.

A deputy found the vehicle at a truck stop and tried to stop the suspect outside the store.

The man refused the deputy’s orders to stop, ran back to the truck, and exited the parking lot onto Highway P with the deputy in pursuit.

During the pursuit, the suspect was involved in a head-on collision with a different deputy before being taken into custody.

Both the deputy and suspect involved in the crash were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. The deputy was treated and released.

The suspect has been medically cleared and placed in the Mississippi County Jail with charges pending for assault 1st degree on a law enforcement officer.

CREWS TO WORK ON ROUTE H IN BUTLER COUNTY BEGINNING TODAY

Route H in Butler County will be reduced over two days this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route HH to County Road 160.

Weather permitting, work will take place today and tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.

FAKE $100 BILLS FOUND DURING TRAFFIC STOP IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Area businesses are asked to be on the lookout for fake money after numerous counterfeit $100 bills were found during a traffic stop in Northeast Arkansas.

Randolph County Sheriff Kevin Bell posted on Facebook that deputies and the Arkansas State Police discovered 35 fake $100 bills on Thursday during a traffic stop in Pocahontas.

Bell says that the bills were printed on standard paper and all had the same serial number as well as the word copy on the front upper left area.

The suspect, whose name was not released, was taken into custody.

EVENT TO BE HELD IN BUTLER COUNTY TO COMMEMORATE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF AN UNSOLVED MURDER

A special event has been scheduled for today to commemorate the 50th anniversary of an unsolved homicide case in Butler County.

18 year old Geneva Hastings was last seen leaving a party at Wolf Creek on June 27, 1975. Her body was discovered a few days later.

There have been no charges or convictions in connection to the case.

To honor the 50th anniversary of this unsolved homicide, Hastings family and friends are asking the public to join them for a special event today at Bacon Park, from 5 to 8 pm.

MORE NORTHEAST ARKANSAS RESIDENTS NOW ELIGIBLE FOR APRIL STORM ASSISTANCE

Arkansas homeowners and renters in Greene County are now eligible for FEMA grants after the April 2nd through 22nd severe storms, flooding and tornadoes.

Eligible applicants with damage not covered by insurance may qualify for grants for temporary housing, basic home repairs and other eligible expenses related to storm damage.

Greene County joins the 16 counties previously approved for FEMA assistance after the April storms including Clay and Randolph.

Residents with homeowners’ or renters’ insurance are encouraged to file a claim as soon as possible with their insurance carrier. By law, FEMA cannot provide funding for losses covered by your insurance. If your policy does not cover all disaster expenses, you may be eligible for federal assistance.

Survivor assistance from the March 14-15 storms remains available for residents in Greene and Randolph counties, among others.

If you were affected by both the March 14-15 and the April 2-22 disasters in Arkansas, you are encouraged to file a separate FEMA application for each. The deadline for the March storms is Monday, July 14. The last day to apply for the April storms is Tuesday, July 22.

FIREWORKS TO LIGHT UP LAKE WAPPAPELLO ON SATURDAY

Lake Wappapello will be illuminated by fireworks this weekend ahead of the Independence Day holiday.

According to the Wappapello Lake US Army Corps of Engineers, “Fireworks at the Lake” has been scheduled for Saturday at the Redman Creek Recreation Area.

Multiple attractions will be at the Recreation Area that day beginning around 3 pm, including a car show, live music, food trucks, and petting zoo.

Officials say that the fireworks will start when it gets dark.

Poplar Bluff Buddy Ball and PB Parks and Recreation will be hosting an Enchanted Forest Ball in early July.

Officials say the event is being held in honor of BuddyBall participants and friends in the community with mental, physical, and developmental disabilities. The event is open to anyone living with disabilities along with guests and their families.

The Ball is scheduled to begin at 5 pm on Tuesday, July 1st at the Black River Coliseum. Tickets can be purchased for $20.

APPLICATION PERIOD FOR MANAGED DEER HUNTS BEGINS IN JULY

The application period for managed deer hunts in Missouri will begin next month.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, beginning July 1st, deer hunters can apply online through the MDC website for a shot at 145 managed deer hunts throughout the state this fall and winter.

The deer hunts will be for archery, muzzleloading, shotgun, and modern firearms from mid-September through mid-January. Some of the hunts will be held specifically for youth or for people with disabilities.

The application period will be from July 1st to July 31st and hunters will be selected by a weighted random drawing. Draw results will be available starting August 15th.

DEXTER MASONIC LODGE TO HOST ALL YOU CAN EAT PANCAKE BREAKFAST

The Dexter Masonic Lodge has announced that they will be hosting an all you can eat pancake breakfast this weekend.

NEW MADRID COUNTY DEATH INVESTIGATION LEADS TO MAN’S ARREST ON MURDER CHARGE

Updating a story we have been following for you this week, a New Madrid County death investigation has led to the arrest of a Portageville man on a 1st degree murder charge.

According to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Office, early Sunday morning, officers with the Portageville Police Department responded to the intersection of 5th Street and Warren Avenue for a subject lying in the roadway.

When the first officer arrived on scene he found an unresponsive male with multiple gunshot wounds, later identified as David Chamberlain, of Portageville. Chamberlain was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation led to the arrest of 18 year old Trey Sutton, of Portageville, on charges of murder 1st degree and armed criminal action.

Five additional people have been arrested and are facing charges of tampering with physical evidence and possession of a controlled substance in connection to the investigation.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN TO BE EXECUTED THIS FALL FOR 2005 DEATH OF MSHP TROOPER

A southeast Missouri man is set to be executed this fall for the murder of a Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper.

Lance Shockley, of West Plains, was convicted in 2009 for the March 2005 shooting death of Sergeant Carl Graham Jr., who was investigating a fatal crash that involved Shockley.

On June 18th, the Missouri Supreme Court issued a warrant of execution for Shockley, ordering him to be executed within a 24 hour period beginning at 6 pm on October 14th.

THE GARFIELD MOVIE TO BE SHOWN AT MOVIE IN THE PARK

The Spillway Recreation area at Wappapello Lake will be converted to a movie theater this weekend.

Movie in the Park will begin at dusk on Friday, June 27th at the Spillway Recreation Area.

The Garfield Movie will be shown, free of charge, and there will also be one free snack and drink available per person. Attendees should remember to bring a lawn chair or blanket.

The Spillway Recreation area is located off of Highway T right before the dam.

MONTHS LONG INVESTIGATION LEADS TO ARREST OF VAN BUREN MAN ON ASSAULT AND WEAPON CHARGES

A Van Buren man is in custody after a multi month investigation.

According to the Carter County Sheriff’s Office, Justin Indiveri has been taken into custody in Oregon.

Indiveri was wanted by the Carter County Sheriff’s Office and Van Buren Police Department on multiple charges including unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action, endangering the welfare of a child, and domestic assault 2nd and 4th degree.

Officials in Carter County are thanking the United States Marshal’s Office and Missouri Relentless Pursuit Team for their collaboration in the case.

SNAKE CAUSES CITY WIDE POWER OUTAGE IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI TOWN

A snake is shouldering the blame for a power outage this week in a Southeast Missouri town.

According to the Kennett Board of Public Works, there was a city wide power outage Tuesday night.

During an investigation, it was found that a snake had gotten into a breaker at a substation, causing the outage.

Facebook posts from the area say that power was down for around an hour.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN DEXTER

Business Route 60 in Stoddard County will be reduced this morning as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Arvin Road to North two Mile Road in Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 7 to 10 a.m.

FUGITIVE OUT OF KENTUCKY ARRESTED IN POPLAR BLUFF

A fugitive out of Kentucky was arrested Monday in Poplar Bluff.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, on Monday officials received information that a fugitive who was wanted in connection to felony charges in McCracken County, Kentucky, was possibly in the Poplar Bluff area.

Officers made contact with the subject, identified as 38 year old Jamal Nance, at a residence on Victor Street. Initially Nance provided a false identity and after officers uncovered his real identity, Nance refused to exit the residence and briefly barricaded himself inside. After a short time, Nance surrendered and was taken into custody.

During the arrest, officers also located suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

Officials say that Nance was wanted on the charges of burglary 1st degree, robbery 1st degree, unlawful imprisonment 1st degree, wanton endangerment 1st degree and interfering with communications.

Nance also had a no bond parole violation warrant, with the original charges of trafficking a controlled substance 1st degree, possession of drug paraphernalia, wanton endangerment 1st degree, criminal mischief 1st degree, burglary 1st degree and possession of a firearm by a felon.

TODAY IS THE FINAL DAY FOR POPLAR BLUFF DISASTER RECOVERY CENTER

A FEMA Disaster Recovery Center in Poplar Bluff will be wrapping up operations today.

According to FEMA Officials, the Butler County DRC at the MPC World Impact Center Conference Center will close permanently at 7 pm this evening.

Following the closure, help will still be available for residents online at DisasterAssistance.gov, by phone at 800-621-3362, or by download the FEMA app.

The FEMA application deadline for the March 14th and 15th severe storms is July 22, 2025.

DISASTER RECOVERY CENTER OPENS IN DONIPHAN

A Disaster Recovery Center will be available this week in Ripley County.

The center will be located at Ripley County Caring Community on West Highway Street in Doniphan. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., on Thursday and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., on Friday and Saturday.

Missourians who sustained damage to their primary residence,

personal property, or have emergency needs due to the severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes and wildfires that occurred March 14 and 15th can visit the center for one-on-one help.

The counties who are eligible include Butler, Carter, Ripley, and Wayne, among others.

At the center, affected individuals can get help applying for disaster assistance, speak to state or federal representatives, receive updates on their FEMA registration, and more. Services at the center are free.

FEMA financial assistance may include money for basic home repairs, personal property losses or other underinsured/uninsured disaster-related needs such as childcare, transportation, medical needs, funeral, or dental expenses. The FEMA registration deadline is July 22nd.

MOTORCYCLE HITS DEER NEAR DONIPHAN, KENTUCKY MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED

A Kentucky man was badly injured Monday night after his motorcycle struck a deer in Ripley County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the 44 year old man from Grayson, Kentucky, was driving on Missouri Highway 142 at around 8:30 pm when he struck the animal.

The man suffered serious injuries in the crash and was flown to an area hospital.

TWO APPREHENDED IN CONNECTION TO WEEKEND BURGLARY AT VAN BUREN BUSINESS

An adult and a juvenile have been apprehended in connection to a burglary at a business over the weekend.

Officials with the Carter County Sheriff’s Office tell KWOC News that on Saturday, deputies responded to an alarm call at the Hemp Joint in Van Buren.

At the scene, a responding deputy located a suspect vehicle and initiated a pursuit, however the vehicle was able to evade law enforcement.

The business reportedly suffered thousands of dollars in damages.

An investigation led to suspects being identified.

Two people, identified as Ralon Morrissey and a juvenile, have voluntarily turned themselves in to deputies.

A search is underway for another juvenile in connection to the investigation.

BLYTHEVILLE MAN IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO SHOOTING IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Updating a story we have been following for you, a subject is in custody in connection to a shooting at a business early Monday morning in Pemiscot County.

According to the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Office, shortly before 2 am Monday, a black male and female entered an area business and tried to purchase alcohol.

Officials say that when the subjects were told it was too late, there was reportedly some kind of argument and the suspect shot the clerk.

The victim was transported to a Memphis hospital and is in stable condition.

During an investigation, officers identified 26 year old Remington Tobar, of Blytheville, as a suspect. He was arrested without incident Monday afternoon.

He is facing charges of robbery 1st degree, assault 1st degree, unlawful possession of a firearm, and two counts of armed criminal action.

POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE APPOINTED TO UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY

A Poplar Bluff High School graduate will be attending the United States Naval Academy.

United States Representative from Missouri Jason Smith tells KWOC News that Michaley Krizman, of Poplar Bluff, earned the appointment to the Academy. She was one of only three students in the Congressional District to be nominated by Smith and then receive an appointment.

Krizman was a member of the PBHS Academic Team. Smith says that she built character and sharpened her leadership skills at Girls State and as a Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadet.

She also helped raise her little sister after their mother tragically passed away from cancer.

Smith is currently accepting applications for 2026 nominations to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. To receive a nomination packet via email, contact Smith’s Farmington office at 573-756-9755.

Applicants are considered on the basis of leadership skills, academic success, physical ability, and extracurricular activities. A committee of Missouri residents reviewed each application and made nomination recommendations to Smith.

HEAT ADVISORY EXTENDED THROUGH FRIDAY

The first heat wave of the summer will continue through most of this week.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a heat advisory will be in effect through 7 PM on Friday.

All of Southeast Missouri will be seeing daily heat index values of up to 106 degrees this week.

If you have to be outside for work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.

Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

TWO POPLAR BLUFF RESIDENTS SERIOUSLY INJURED IN ST. FRANCOIS COUNTY CRASH

Two Poplar Bluff residents were flown from the scene of a crash Monday afternoon in St. Francois County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a vehicle, driven by a 41 year old Poplar Bluff man, struck the left rear of another vehicle on Southbound US Highway 67.

The first vehicle then traveled off the right side of the road and struck a rock embankment.

Two passengers in the first vehicle, a 45 year old woman and a 14 year old boy, suffered serious injuries in the crash and were flown to St. Louis hospitals. No injuries were listed for the driver.

Three occupants of the second vehicle received minor injuries.

WOMAN IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING PURSUIT IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A woman has been taken into custody in connection to a pursuit in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Dunklin County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 1:30 pm on Monday, deputies with the Dunklin County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to State Highway 25, just north of Kennett, in reference to a lawn mower that had fallen off a trailer that was being pulled by a white truck.

Deputies located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The driver failed to yield and pulled into an area business, where the individual exited the vehicle. The suspect then stole a vehicle from the property and fled northbound on State Highway 25.

A pursuit ensued, during which the suspect traveled at high rates of speed, reaching speeds in excess of 115 miles per hour.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol successfully deployed stop sticks near Bernie and the pursuit ended just south of Dexter, when the vehicle left the roadway and became immobilized. The driver, a white female, was taken into custody without further incident.

Her identity is being withheld pending the formal filing of charges.

Further investigation revealed that the original truck, trailer, and lawn mower involved in the incident had been stolen out of Piggott, Arkansas.

MAJOR CASE SQUAD ACTIVATED IN CONNECTION TO NEW MADRID COUNTY DEATH INVESTIGATION

The SEMO Major Case Squad has been activated in connection to a death investigation in New Madrid County.

According to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Office, a Portageville officer found a subject deceased near the corner of 5th and Warren Streets early Sunday morning.

The Portageville Police Department, New Madrid County Sheriff’s Office, and SEMO Major Case Squad are all working on the investigation.

Missouri Department of Transportation crews will be making driving surface improvements on Route OO in Stoddard County which could cause impacts to motorists in the area.

According to officials, the work zone is located from Route 25 to County Road 337 near Advance.

UNITED STATES BOMBS THREE SITES IN IRAN

The U.S. military has struck three sites in Iran, inserting itself into Israel’s effort to destroy Iran's nuclear program in a risky gambit to weaken a longtime foe.

The decision to directly involve the U.S. comes after more than a week of strikes by Israel on Iran that have moved to systematically eradicate the country’s air defenses and offensive missile capabilities, while damaging its nuclear enrichment facilities.

But U.S. and Israeli officials have said that American stealth bombers and a 30,000-pound bunker buster bomb they alone can carry offered the best chance of destroying heavily fortified sites connected to the Iranian nuclear program buried deep underground.

President Donald Trump announced the strikes. Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency reported that attacks targeted the country’s Fordo, Isfahan and Natanz nuclear sites. The agency did not elaborate. Iran's foreign minister said Iran reserves the right to retaliate.

FIREWORKS SAFETY TIPS

If you are going to be shooting off fireworks at home during the summer season, officials are reminding you to do so in a safe manner.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission has released some fireworks safety tips to help keep you and your family safe this Fourth of July.

The CPSC advises parents to never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks and always have adult supervision when kids of any age are playing with fireworks, including sparklers.

Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully and keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap. Also, never point or throw fireworks at another person.

Do not light fireworks in any areas where the sparks could ignite dry grass, leaves, or other potential fire fuel.

Also remember to check with local ordinances and authorities for bans on fireworks and open burning.

CULVERT REPLACEMENT TO FORCE CLOSURE OF STODDARD COUNTY ROAD TODAY

Route FF in Stoddard County will be closed today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace a culvert under the roadway.

DANGEROUS HEAT CONDITIONS TO BEGIN THIS WEEKEND IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Excessive heat conditions could pose danger to many residents in Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a dangerous, prolonged heatwave will begin on Saturday and continue through at least the middle of next week.

In Poplar Bluff temperatures are expected to top out in the mid 90’s, with heat index values reaching up to 105 degrees during this time period.

Officials say that dangerously high temperatures and humidity could quickly cause heat stress or heat stroke if precautions are not taken.

If you have to be outside for work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.

MULTIPLE COOLING CENTERS AVAILABLE IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Anyone looking for relief from the heat wave that will scorch Southeast Missouri beginning this weekend can visit any of the multiple cooling centers available throughout our region.

A cooling center has been established in Poplar Bluff at the Butler County Health Department.

Cooling Centers are also available at the Ripley County Library in Doniphan and the Bloomfield Public Library.

2025 CLASS OF POPLAR BLUFF SPORTS HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCED

Four Poplar Bluff record setters have been chosen as the 2025 class of Poplar Bluff Sports Hall of Fame.

President of the Sports Hall of Fame Brian Rosener tells KWOC News that Justin Alford, Rena Brown, Stephanie Faith, and Slug Hefner will be inducted into the Hall on Thursday, October 2nd, at the Black River Coliseum.

Tickets to the banquet will go on sale at a later date.

Roesner added that it was a unique class this year because every person being honored holds a record in their discipline.

Alford is the first soccer player to be honored while Hefner, owner and driver of Dirty Duck Racing, becomes the first person recognized for motorsports. Brown and Faith were both multi-sport athletes that helped the Poplar Bluff girls basketball program reach a final four.

There are currently 100 individuals and 12 teams honored in the Sports Hall of Fame room located in the Poplar Bluff Museum, in the Mark Twain School on Main Street.

This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the Mules becoming the mascot of Poplar Bluff High School when the students chose it to honor their coach.

BACON PARK TO HOST JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION

Bacon Park in Poplar Bluff has been chosen as the location for the 2025 Juneteenth celebration.

The event will begin at 10 am on Saturday, June 21st.

There will be multiple events and vendors as a part of this year’s Juneteenth celebration, including a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, talent show, arts and crafts, and a fireworks show.

WATERFEST SET FOR SATURDAY AT WAPPAPELLO LAKE

The Redman Creek Beach at Wappapello Lake will be the site for a free day of activities this weekend.

The Wappapello Lake US Army Corps of Engineers will be hosting Waterfest from 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday, June 21st.

Park Rangers will be on hand to play games, teach visitors how to stay safe around the water, and give away prizes to participating beachgoers.

MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION AWARDS GRANT TO CITY OF POPLAR BLUFF

Poplar Bluff is getting grant money for the construction of the connector trail between the Shelby Road Trail and Wolf Creek Trail.

The Missouri Department of Conservation and Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce recently collaborated to provide the 1.8-mile concrete connector trail as part of community conservation funding.

MDC provided a $400,000 grant to reimburse the City of Poplar Bluff for the project.

The remaining project cost was covered by Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation, and the Missouri Department of Transportation.

WATER MAIN BREAK CAUSES LOSS OF WATER IN DOWNTOWN DONIPHAN

Parts of Doniphan were without water yesterday.

According to the city of Doniphan Facebook page, the downtown area was without water for a period of time Wednesday morning due to a water main break.

Officials say that a precautionary boil water notice has been issued for Grand Avenue between approximately Pine Street and Franklin Street. A portion of State Street is also included in the notice.

IDENTITY RELEASED OF SKELETAL REMAINS FOUND IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

State officials have identified skeletal remains that were found earlier this month in Northeast Arkansas. 

According to Greene County Sheriff Brad Snyder, a detective and civilian search party member were searching an area southwest of Lake Ashbaugh on June 10th when they located skeletal remains in a very advanced state of decomposition.  

Snyder says that the Arkansas State Crime Lab has identified the remains as that of Jessica Paige Kemp.

An autopsy was performed by the crime lab, however results are still pending. 

Snyder added that no further information will be released at this time. 

TWO POPLAR BLUFF MEN GRADUATE FROM HIGHWAY PATROL LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY

Three new State Troopers have been assigned to Southeast Missouri.

Colonel Michael Turner, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, tells KWOC News that a total of 28 troopers graduated from the Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy on Wednesday, June 18th.

Three of the graduates will be coming to Troop E in Southeast Missouri.

Trooper Elijah Missey, of Leadville, Colorado, was assigned to Wayne County, Trooper Tyler Deering, of Park Hills, will report to Madison and Iron counties, and Trooper Benjamin Dillon, from Poplar Bluff will be stationed in Stoddard County.

Another Poplar Bluff native, Trooper Grant Plummer, was assigned to Douglas and Ozark Counties.

The new troopers will report to duty in their assigned troops on July 7.

CANADIAN MAN FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A SOUTHEAST MISSOURI CRASH

A Canadian man was injured in a crash Tuesday afternoon in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 34 year old man from Ontario, Canada, was driving a truck on US Highway 61 in New Madrid County when the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned.

The driver suffered moderate injuries in the crash and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

DRIVER EXAMINATION STATIONS TO BE CLOSED ON MULTIPLE DATES OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS

Missouri state officials are reminding motorists that driver examinations will not be available on select days over the next few weeks.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, driver examination stations throughout the state will be closed today in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.

CHANCE OF SEVERE WEATHER, INCLUDING LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS, THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING

Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas are looking at a risk of severe weather this afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, there are risks for numerous severe thunderstorms, including winds up to around 70 miles per hour as well as one to 1.5 inch hail.

Officials say that a few tornadoes are also possible, however the tornado risk is low.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON STATUTORY RAPE AND SODOMY CHARGES

Authorities in Butler County have arrested an area man on multiple sex related charges.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, 48 year old Bradley Henson, of Poplar Bluff, was taken into custody Monday on charges of statutory rape 1st degree, sodomy 1st degree, failure to register as a sex offender, unlawful possession of an illegal weapon, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Henson also reportedly had an active warrant through probation and parole.

Following the arrest, he was held at the Butler County Justice Center.

DATES SET FOR 33RD ANNUAL CHILDREN’S THEATER DRAMA CAMP

The dates have been set for the 33rd Annual Children’s Theater Drama Camp at Three Rivers College.

The camp for students entering 2nd to 8th grade will begin on July 14th at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center on the Three Rivers College Poplar Bluff campus. There will be three separate one week camps this year.

The cost of the drama camp is $75, which includes a T-shirt, scripts, notebook, daily snack and drink.

ONE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN EARLY MORNING CRASH NEAR MOREHOUSE

One person was injured early Tuesday morning in a single vehicle crash near Morehouse.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 24 year old man, from New Madrid, was driving on Missouri Highway E at around 3 am when his vehicle ran off the side of the roadway and struck a ditch before overturning.

The driver, who reportedly was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries during the wreck.

He was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

POPLAR BLUFF PARKS AND RECREATION OFFERING SWIM LESSONS THIS SUMMER

Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation is offering swimming lessons this summer at the R.W. Huntington Municipal Pool.

Officials say that the program will run from June 23rd through July 24th and the cost is $40. Parents can choose from either Monday and Wednesday sessions or Tuesday and Thursday.

OVERNIGHT RESURFACING WORK UNDERWAY IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Route 412 in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane with a 14-foot width restriction for almost a month so contractor crews can resurface the asphalt.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the work zone is located from Kennett Street to Legion Street in Kennett.

Weather permitting, work will take place overnight from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m through Friday, July 11th.

PB BUDDY BALL TO WRAP UP 2025 SEASON TONIGHT

The Poplar Bluff Buddy Ball season will finish up tonight. 

There are three games scheduled for tonight at Poplar Bluff High School. The first game featuring younger league players will start at 5:30 pm and will be followed by two older leagues games at 6:30 pm. 

End of year awards will also be handed out following each game.

Buddy Ball gives an opportunity to athletes with mental and physical developmental disabilities to compete and have fun in a safe and supportive environment.

Everyone is invited to watch and cheer on the athletes tonight at Poplar Bluff High School. The games will also be broadcast on the Today’s Talk KWOC Facebook Page and the River Radio Youtube Page.

NAME RELEASED OF SUSPECT IN DUNKLIN COUNTY KNIFE INCIDENT

Updating a story we have been following for you, the name has been released of a suspect who was taken into custody last week following an incident in Dunklin County. 

According to Missouri court records, Jeremey Hamburger, of Arbyrd, is facing charges of assault 1st degree, armed criminal action, burglary 1st degree, unlawful possession of a firearm, resisting or interfering with an arrest, and unlawful use of a weapon. 

The Dunklin County Sheriff’s Office reported that last Thursday deputies responded to a residence in Arbyrd in reference to a male subject attempting to force entry into a home. 

At the scene, deputies made contact with the victim who reported that their neighbor, later identified as Jermey Hamburger, had entered his residence armed with a handgun and a knife. 

During the incident, the suspect allegedly pointed the firearm at the victim and cut him with the knife before fleeing. The victim also stated that the suspect fired one shot outside after exiting.

Hamburger was taken into custody at his residence later that night. 

He was held in the Dunklin County Jail on a $250,000, cash only bond. 

MISSOURI STATE OFFICIALS CAUTIONING RESIDENTS TO WATCH OUT FOR SCAM TEXTS

State officials in Missouri are warning residents to be on the lookout for scam text messages. 

Officials say that if you get a text message posing as the Missouri Department of Revenue or Missouri Department of Transportation threatening you to pay now, it is a scam. 

MoDOT will never solicit you to pay a toll or traffic violation fee. 

If you get one of these messages, do not click any links in them. Delete and report the texts. 

INAUGURAL POPLAR BLUFF JUNETEENTH FORMAL BALL SET FOR JUNE 20TH

ROADSIDE REPAIR PROJECT SET FOR THIS WEEK IN POPLAR BLUFF

Construction crews will be performing roadside repairs this week on Business Route 67 in Butler County.

CONTRASTING POLITICAL RALLIES HELD IN POPLAR BLUFF OVER FATHER’S DAY WEEKEND

Rain showers could not stop Poplar Bluff and surrounding area residents from making their voices heard on both sides of the political spectrum this past Saturday. 

On the north side of Poplar Bluff, Missouri State Representative Hardy Billington organized the “Trump Train” for President Donald Trump’s birthday to show support and appreciation for all that the President is doing. 

The parade included an estimated over 100 vehicles. 

At around the same time the Trump Train was beginning, numerous people lined up downtown in front of the Butler County Courthouse as a part of the nationwide “No Kings” protests. 

The No King’s website says the event was to show communities taking action to reject authoritarianism and to show the world what democracy really looks like.

SUSPECT TAKEN INTO CUSTODY EARLY FRIDAY MORNING AFTER ALLEGEDLY CUTTING A NEIGHBOR WITH A KNIFE

A suspect was taken into custody early Friday morning following an incident in Dunklin County. 

According to the Dunklin County Sheriff’s Office, Thursday night, deputies responded to a residence in Arbyrd in reference to a male subject attempting to force entry into a home. 

At the scene, deputies made contact with the victim who reported that their neighbor had entered his residence armed with a handgun and a knife. 

During the incident, the suspect allegedly pointed the firearm at the victim and cut him with the knife before fleeing. The victim also stated that the suspect fired one shot outside after exiting.

Deputies attempted to make contact with the suspect at his residence and the suspect initially refused to exit the home. Once the suspect came outside, he failed to comply with deputies’ commands and was ultimately taken into custody at approximately 12:15 am. A firearm was located and seized from the suspects' person at the time of his arrest. 

The suspect was transported to the Dunklin County Jail, where he remains in custody pending the filing of formal charges. 

NAYLOR MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN CRASH NEAR FAIRDEALING

A Naylor man was seriously injured Friday night in a single vehicle crash near Fairdealing. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 53 year old man was driving on Ripley County Road 160E-30 at around 11 pm when his vehicle ran off the side of the roadway, struck an embankment, and overturned. 

The man suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital. 

SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH INJURES ONE IN PUXICO AREA

One man was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital Saturday morning following a single vehicle crash. 

According to authorities, a 31 year old Puxico man was driving on Highway 51 in Stoddard County when his vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway, struck two road signs, and then a tree.

The man received serious injuries in the crash and was taken by ambulance to a Poplar Bluff hospital.  

BUTLER COUNTY PUBLIC HEARING TO BE HELD TODAY

Butler County has scheduled a public hearing for today. 

County officials say that the hearing will be to discuss the county’s application for the Community Development Block Grant program. 

The county is proposing to expand the Broseley Senior Nutrition Center dining room by approximately 1,500 square feet for dining, office, and a walk-in cooler/freezer space. The total project cost is estimated at $510,000. The county proposes to contribute $10,000 in cash, with grant funds of $500,000 to make up the balance.

All interested citizens and groups are encouraged to attend the hearing at 8:30 am this morning at the Butler County Courthouse.

CULVERT REPLACEMENT BEGINS THIS MORNING ON ROUTE 61

Route 61 in New Madrid County will be closed through Wednesday as contractor crews replace a culvert under the roadway.  

The section of roadway being closed is located from County Road 828 to Route 80 near Matthews. 

Weather permitting, the road will be closed through 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

MISSOURI NATIONAL GUARD ACTIVATED AHEAD OF PLANNED PROTESTS

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has activated the Missouri National Guard.

In a statement on Thursday, Governor Kehoe stated that the activation is in response to immigration enforcement protests planned across the state.

An executive order issued as a part of the activation declared that a State of Emergency exists in Missouri due to civil unrest.

Kehoe added that the action is a precautionary measure.

This week, the Missouri Department of Public Safety, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and Missouri National Guard established a Unified Command to monitor situations on the ground and prepare to assist local law enforcement.

ANNUAL DEXTER GRILLE IT UP SCHEDULED FOR EARLY JULY

Multiple attractions are scheduled for the 9th Annual Dexter Grille It Up in early July.

MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE TO GRANT TAX EXTENSIONS TO CITIZENS AFFECTED BY SEVERE DISASTERS

Some Missourians will be allowed tax extensions if they were impacted by recent weather-related catastrophes.

The Missouri Department of Revenue has announced that they will follow parameters as outlined by the IRS in connection with the disaster declaration issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The declaration permits the IRS to postpone certain tax-filing and tax-payment deadlines for taxpayers who reside or have a business in a disaster area.

The disaster area encompasses 25 counties, including Butler, Carter, Dunklin, New Madrid, Ripley, Stoddard, and Wayne.

Taxpayers in the designated area facing tax deadlines that fall on or after March 14th, 2025, and before November 3rd, 2025, will be granted additional time to file, up to Nov. 3, 2025.

Missouri does not automatically apply extensions, therefore, the customer will need to file Form MO-60 or Form MO-7004 and write “disaster extension to November 3, 2025” on the form and at the top of the return when filing.

If the customer files their return electronically, they will need to contact the Department of Revenue to request the extension at Income@dor.mo.gov.

MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AFTER ATTEMPTING TO FLEE FROM POLICE IN POPLAR BLUFF

A man was taken into custody Wednesday after allegedly fleeing from Poplar Bluff Police.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, on Wednesday officers made contact with 37 year old William Gains, of Poplar Bluff for a traffic violation.

Gains then allegedly fled the scene on foot, leaving his bike behind.

Officials say that Gains was located and placed under arrest.

He was lodged in the Butler County Justice Center and charges have been submitted to the Butler County Prosecutor’s Office.

MULTIPLE BANDS TO PERFORM THIS WEEKEND TO BENEFIT THE ANIMAL WELFARE ALLIANCE

Multiple bands will be taking the stage this weekend to raise money for the Animal Welfare Alliance No-Kill Shelter.

The Animal Welfare Alliance’s Band-A-Palooza will begin at 5 pm on Saturday at The Camp at Lake Wappapello.

CONTRACTS AWARDED FOR PAVEMENT IMPROVEMENTS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission has awarded contracts for various road projects in Southeast Missouri.

According to officials, a 3.3 million dollar contract was awarded to Apex Paving Company, for a scrub seal and the addition of rumble stripes on Route 49 in Wayne and Iron Counties.

An almost eight million dollar contract was awarded to Magruder Paving for resurfacing projects on Route 164 and Route Y in Dunklin County.

Additional information about the projects, including a timeline and what impacts there will be to traffic, will be released prior to the start of construction.

SKELETAL REMAINS FOUND IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Skeletal remains were found Tuesday afternoon in Northeast Arkansas.

According to Greene County Sheriff Brad Snyder, a detective and civilian search party member were searching an area southwest of Lake Ashbaugh at approximately 1:45 pm when they located skeletal remains in a very advanced state of decomposition.

Snyder says that identification will have to be determined by the Arkansas State Crime Lab due to the state of the remains.

An investigation is ongoing and members of the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division responded to the scene Tuesday to assist.

MISSOURI SCHOOL BUS INSPECTION RESULTS RELEASED

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has announced the results of the Driver and Vehicle Safety Division's 2025 annual school bus inspection program.

As a part of the program, buses found to have no defective items are rated as "approved.” Buses having one or more defective items which do not constitute an immediate danger are rated as "defective.” Buses with any defective items which constitute an immediate danger are rated as "out-of-service.”

In Butler County, Poplar Bluff R-1 had 42 of the district’s 52 buses listed as approved, six were listed as defective, and four were placed out of service.

Neelyville R-4 had 14 of 15 buses approved, one rated as defective, and none rated out of service. 14 of the 16 school buses for Twin Rivers R-X were approved with one rated as defective and one placed out of service.

Over 90 percent of 11,255 buses statewide were rated as approved.

LOW INTEREST FEDERAL DISASTER LOANS NOW AVAILABLE FOR MISSOURIANS IMPACTED BY MARCH 14TH AND 15TH STORMS

Missourians can now apply for low interest loans if they were affected by the mid March storms.

According to FEMA, low-interest federal disaster loans are now available to Missouri businesses and residents impacted by the March 14th and 15th severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes and wildfires in 18 counties, including Butler, Carter, Ripley, and Wayne counties.

The U.S. Small Business Administration is offering low-interest disaster loans not only to businesses but also to homeowners and renters in a declared major disaster area. Interest rates can be as low as 2.75% for homeowners and renters with terms up to 30 years.

You may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application via the SBA’s secure website at lending.sba.gov or by visiting a Disaster Recovery Center.

DAY USE FEES TO BE SUSPENDED AT SELECT RECREATION AREAS THIS MONTH

Certain recreation areas will not require day use fees for two days this month.

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake, day use fees will be waived at more than 2,600 Corps of Engineers operated recreation areas nationwide in observance of the Corps birthday on June 16 and for the Juneteenth National Independence Day on June 19.

The waiver covers fees for boat launch ramps and swimming beaches. The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services, or fees for specialized facilities like group picnic shelters and events.

MOTORCYCLE CRASH LEAVES ONE INJURED IN BUTLER COUNTY

One man was injured in a crash Monday night outside of Poplar Bluff.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a truck failed to yield to a motorcycle on Route B and was hit by the motorcycle.

The driver of the motorcycle, a 23 year old man from the Fisk area, was flown to a St. Louis hospital with serious injuries. No injuries were reported for the driver of the truck.

NO INDICATIONS OF BIASES DURING TRAFFIC STOPS BY POPLAR BLUFF POLICE FOUND ACCORDING TO ATTORNEY GENERAL REPORT

Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whitley is commending his officers after a recent report concerning traffic stops was released.

The Missouri Attorney General’s office recently published their annual Vehicle Stop Report.

According to the report, there were no indications of biased-based profiling and/or treatment of individuals during traffic stops completed by the Poplar Bluff Police Department.

The department also did not receive any bias-based profiling complaints, nor was any evidence of bias found in any internal affairs investigations.

The report says that the PBPD’s traffic stop, arrest, and citation numbers were well within the average of departments throughout the state.

Chief Whitely publicly commended PBPD officers for their ability to act without bias. He added that the department prides itself on acting fairly and impartially.

FLAGS TO FLY AT HALF STAFF TODAY IN HONOR OF BERNIE POLICE LIEUTENANT

Flags in Missouri will be at half staff today to honor a southeast Missouri police lieutenant who died in the line of duty.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has ordered U.S. and Missouri flags to be flown at half-staff at government buildings in Stoddard County, all police stations, sheriffs’ offices, and Missouri State Highway Patrol general and troop headquarters across Missouri to honor Bernie Police Department Lieutenant Eddie Mays.

Mays was on duty last week when he suffered a medical emergency while handcuffing a resisting suspect and could not be resuscitated.

Mays Memorial Service will be held today in Dexter, before his interment at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Bloomfield.

QULIN TO HOST PUBLIC HEARING TODAY

The city of Qulin will be hosting a public hearing today.

City officials say that the hearing will be to discuss the city’s application for the Community Development Block Grant program.

The city is proposing to repave deteriorated roadways in the area bounded by several streets north of D Street, which includes, but is not limited to, portions of First, Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Streets. The total project cost is estimated at approximately $520,000.

MAJOR DISASTER DECLARATION APPROVED FOR MAY 16TH STORMS THAT KILLED TWO IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A federal disaster declaration has been approved for storms that killed two people last month in Southeast Missouri.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has announced that President Trump has approved Missouri's request for a major disaster declaration in response to the May 16 severe storms and tornadoes.

That storm system included an EF-3 tornado that tracked along a 16 mile path in Stoddard and Scott Counties, killing two people.

Governor Kehoe says individual assistance will be available to eligible residents in Scott County impacted by the May 16th storms.

Individual Assistance allows eligible residents to seek federal assistance with temporary housing, housing repairs, replacement of damaged belongings, vehicles, and other qualifying expenses.

The declaration also approved public assistance for Scott County.

Individuals who sustained damage or losses due to the May 16 severe weather may now apply for FEMA disaster assistance online at www.disasterassistance.gov or by calling FEMA’s toll-free registration line at 1-800-621-3362.

PIEDMONT WOMAN FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A CRASH

A Piedmont woman was flown from the scene of a crash Monday night in Iron County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that a 39 year old woman was driving on Missouri Highway 143, seven miles east of Des Arc, when her vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree.

The driver suffered serious injuries in the crash and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

ROAD CLOSURE SCHEDULED FOR TODAY NEAR ADVANCE

Route OO in Stoddard County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

The closure will be located from County Road 307 to County Road 309 near Advance.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

MINNESOTA WOMAN ARRESTED IN STODDARD COUNTY FOR ALLEGEDLY ABANDONING TODDLER

A Minnesota woman was taken into custody over the weekend in Stoddard County for allegedly abandoning a young child.

According to a probable cause affidavit, an officer responded Saturday morning to a one year old child being abandoned in a motel parking lot.

A subject stated that a woman, later identified as 39 year old Elizabeth Mcarthur, of White Bearlake, Minnesota, told them that she needed to grab a diaper from her vehicle. The subject then noticed Mcarthur get in her vehicle and leave the parking lot, abandoning the child.

While the officer was there, Mcarthur returned to the parking lot. While speaking with the officer, she reportedly said that she had driven approximately five miles before realizing it was not the best decision and returning.

Mcarthur was booked in the Stoddard County jail on charges of abandonment of a child - 1st degree and endangering the welfare of a child creating substantial risk. She is being held on a $20,000 cash only bond.

FEMA DISASTER SURVIVOR ASSISTANCE TEAMS TO BE AVAILABLE TO HELP THIS WEEK IN WAYNE COUNTY

Disaster Survivor Assistance teams from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will be in Wayne county this week to help register affected individuals and households impacted by the severe storms, straight-line winds, tornados, and wildfires that occurred on March 14th and 15th.

The teams will be available at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Piedmont from 9 am to 6 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday.

DSA teams help survivors register for assistance with FEMA and address immediate and emerging needs. In addition to FEMA registrations, team members can help with case inquiries, survivor needs DR-48assessments and community resource referrals.

Assistance teams can help survivors from any of the counties that were a part of the federal disaster declaration for the March 14-15 period including Bollinger, Butler, Carter, Iron, Reynolds, Ripley, and Wayne counties.

TWO INJURED IN THREE VEHICLE CRASH NEAR WINONA

Two people were injured Sunday evening in a three vehicle crash near Winona.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 5:30 pm when a vehicle crossed the center line of Missouri Highway 19 and struck another vehicle. The first vehicle then travelled into the path of a freightliner.

The driver of the first vehicle suffered serious injuries and was transported to a Springfield hospital.

The driver of the second vehicle received moderate injuries and was taken to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

LOW INTEREST DISASTER LOANS AVAILABLE FOR NON PROFITS AFFECTED BY SPRING STORMS

Non profit organizations in Southeast Missouri who were affected by the spring storms can now apply for loans from the United States Small Business Administration.

The SBA has announced the availability of low interest federal disaster loans to private nonprofit organizations affected by severe winter storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding that occurred between March 30th and April 8th.

The disaster declaration covers 25 Missouri counties including Butler, Carter, Dunklin, New Madrid, Pemiscot, Ripley, Stoddard, and Wayne.

Under the declaration, PNPs providing non-critical services of a governmental nature impacted by physical damages or financial losses directly related to the disaster are eligible to apply for both business physical damage loans and Economic Injury Disaster Loans.

Examples of eligible non-critical PNP organizations include, but are not limited to, food kitchens, homeless shelters, museums, libraries, community centers, schools, and colleges.

REPAIRS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TODAY ON US HIGHWAY 60 IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

Route 60 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane this week so construction crews can perform edge rut repairs. 

The section of roadway being reduced is located one mile east of the Route 61 interchange near Sikeston.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through Thursday.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS CAUSE CLOSURE OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI ROAD

Route CC in Pemiscot County will be closed for part of this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The work zone is located from Route A to County Road 208 near Wardell.

Weather permitting, work will take place today and tomorrow, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.
