DATES SET FOR OPEN HOUSE AND ORIENTATIONS IN THE POPLAR BLUFF R-1 SCHOOL DISTRICT

Parents in Poplar Bluff will have the opportunity to learn more about the schools their children will be attending this fall during a series of open houses scheduled for next month.

The Poplar Bluff High School Open House is set for Thursday, August 14th, followed by Freshman Orientation on the 15th.

Early Childhood Meet the teacher visits are scheduled for August 15th, 18th, and 19th.

Open houses will be held for the four elementary schools as well as the 4th through 8th grades on Monday, August 18th.

The Kindergarten and Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center Open Houses are set for August 19th.

The first day of school has been scheduled for Wednesday, August 20th.

MISSOURI SALES TAX HOLIDAY BEGINS AUGUST 1ST

Missouri’s annual back to school sales tax holiday will begin next month.

According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, the tax holiday will run from Friday, August 1st through Sunday, August 3rd.

During this time, certain back-to-school purchases such as school supplies, computers, clothing and other qualifying items as defined by statute are exempt from all state and local sales tax or use tax taxes.

Eligible items include clothing that does not have a taxable value of more than $100 and personal computers that do not cost more than $1,500, among other items.

POPLAR BLUFF HOUSING AUTHORITY TO HOST BLOCK PARTY

The Poplar Bluff Housing Authority will be throwing a block party in early August.

The National Night Out Block Party will be held from 5 to 8 pm on August 5th at the Housing Authority on North E Street.

The free event will include food, games, a petting zoo, music, family activities, and more.

Officials say that the Block Party is to promote strong police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.

RUN 4 THE ARTS SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 6TH

A date has been set for the 10th annual Run 4 the Arts hosted by Three Rivers College.

The four-mile run or walk, along with a one-mile walk, will be held at 8 am on Saturday, September 6th at the College’s Poplar Bluff Campus. The course will begin and end in front of the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.

All funds from the event will go to benefit Three Rivers fine arts scholarships.

DONIPHAN FIRE DEPARTMENT TO HOST PANCAKE BREAKFAST FUNDRAISER IN AUGUST

The Doniphan Fire Department has scheduled a fundraiser for August to raise funds for new equipment.

The Pancake Breakfast fundraiser will be held from 7 to 11 am on August 30th at the Doniphan Firehouse. A plate of pancakes and sausage, along with a drink, will be available for five dollars.

Firefighters will also be available to meet with kids and give them tours of the fire trucks.

All proceeds from the event will go towards the purchase of new equipment for the Doniphan Fire Department.

CARTER COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE RECEIVES GRANT FOR NEW EQUIPMENT

A Southeast Missouri Sheriff’s Department has received a grant for new equipment to help keep officers safe.

According to Carter County Sheriff Alonzo Bradwell, the Carter County Sheriff’s Office received a grant from the Southeast Coalition for Roadway Safety, providing patrol deputies with "Guardian Angel Elite Series" equipment.

The equipment are wearable safety lights designed for enhanced visibility, particularly for law enforcement and emergency services.
