DEXTER MAN ARRESTED ON CHILD MOLESTATION AND SEXUAL ABUSE CHARGES

A Dexter man is in custody on multiple charges, including child molestation.

According to court documents, 55 year old Paul Bess is accused of having inappropriate contact with a juvenile under the age of 15.

During an interview with police, Bess allegedly admitted to the inappropriate contact that had occurred multiple times over the course of two years.

Bess was arrested on charges of 2nd degree child molestation, 3rd degree child molestation, 1st degree sodomy or attempted sodomy, 1st degree sexual abuse, and sexual misconduct involving a child under 15.

He is being held in the Stoddard County Jail on no bond.

QULIN HOMECOMING SET FOR OCTOBER 4TH

The beginning of October will mark the return of the Qulin Homecoming.

Organizers say that the event will be held on Saturday, October 4th at the Qulin Lions Park.

There will also be attractions and vendors available including the photo contest, volleyball tournament, the pumpkin decorating contest, and the Bake wars.

MULES CAFE TO OPEN TODAY FOR NEW SCHOOL YEAR

Poplar Bluff students will once again be making lunch for customers beginning today.

The Mules Café, located at the Culinary Arts Center on the Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center campus, is open to the public from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday and Friday each week, unless school is out.

ATTENDEES TO UPCOMING CRUISE-IN REMINDED TO DRIVE RESPONSIBLY

Anyone who is planning to attend a Cruise-In event this weekend in Poplar Bluff is being reminded to drive responsibly.

According to Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whiteley, during a past event, some attendees displayed driving behaviors that are

not lawful and placed others in attendance, as well as members of the public who were not attending, at risk of injury.

Whiteley says that anyone who will be at this weekend’s event is expected to respect private property and obey all traffic laws, as there will be zero tolerance for violations.

FARMERS URGED TO TAKE STEPS TO KEEP MOTORISTS AND THEMSELVES SAFE

With Harvest Season underway, farmers are urged to take steps to protect themselves and other motorists while on Missouri highways.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, in 2024, there were 194 Missouri traffic crashes involving farm equipment or implements.

Farmers are being asked to make sure your farm equipment is properly marked with lights and a “slow-moving vehicle” emblem when you travel on the roadway. If traffic accumulates behind you on the road where it is difficult to make a safe pass, pull off onto the side of the road in a level area, so vehicles can pass.

ATVs being used for farming can only travel on highways during daylight hours and must be equipped with lights, a bicycle flag, and a "slow-moving vehicle" emblem.

The law requires anyone under the age of 18 to wear a safety helmet when operating an ATV; however, the Highway Patrol recommends operators wear a safety helmet regardless of age.

Tomorrow we will have tips for drivers on how to share the roadway with farm vehicles.

REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY ON MCMANUS DRIVE IN DONIPHAN

Road crews in Doniphan will be working on McManus drive today.

According to city officials, McManus Drive will be reduced to one lane beginning at 8 am for repairs.

Motorists are advised to use caution in the area or use Bowden Drive if possible.

THREE PEOPLE DEAD FOLLOWING HOUSE FIRE IN RURAL RIPLEY COUNTY

A house fire has claimed the lives of three people in Ripley County.

Ripley County Sheriff Rad Talburt tells KWOC News that emergency crews, including around 30 Ripley County firefighters, responded to the fire on State Highway 142 East in rural Ripley County early Tuesday morning.

An adult male, identified as Chad Vandergriff, was pronounced dead at the scene along with two juvenile females.

Two other people, adult Tabitha Vandergriff and a juvenile male, were transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Their current condition has not been released.

The Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office has responded as a part of the investigation to determine a cause for the fire.

SEND OFF PARADE TO BE HELD IN QULIN TODAY FOR UPCOMING VETERANS HONOR TOUR

The Veterans Honor Tour will depart for their annual Washington DC trip this week and a local community is stepping up to give the veterans the send off they deserve.

Qulin Mayor Justin Parks tells KWOC News that the city of Qulin will be hosting a celebration for the veterans beginning at 9:45 am this morning at the Qulin Lion’s Club Park.

A send off parade will follow at 10 am with the route going from 5th Street, to D Street, to 2nd Street, to A Street, to 4th Street and ending on Connecticut Street.

The public is encouraged to line the streets and wave flags to celebrate our veterans.

IT’S A GREAT PUMPKIN CHARLIE BROWN TO BE SHOWN AT MOVIE IN THE PARK

McLane Park in Poplar Bluff will be converted to a movie theater this weekend.

Movie in the Park will begin at dusk on Friday with a showing of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.”

Food will also be available beginning at 5:30 pm and attendees should remember to bring a lawn chair or blanket.

McLane Park is located off of Highway W, on the north side of Poplar Bluff.

TEENAGER FLOWN TO AREA HOSPITAL FOLLOWING SIDE BY SIDE CRASH NEAR COOTER

A Cooter teenager was injured in a side by side crash Monday evening.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 17 year old girl was driving on Pemiscot County Road 547 shortly before 6 pm, when the vehicle ran off the road and overturned.

The teen was ejected during the crash.

She was flown to a Memphis hospital with moderate injuries.

BERNIE POLICE INVESTIGATING MULTIPLE REPORTS OF VEHICLE BREAK-INS

Police are investigating multiple reports of vehicle break-ins in Bernie.

According to the Bernie Police Department, the break-ins occurred Monday morning between midnight and 4:30 am around South Spiker Street, Bowman Avenue, Medler Street, and Folk Avenue.

Anyone with exterior cameras in those areas are asked to review your footage and if you see anything suspicious, call 573-293-4454.

Officials say they have been in contact with surrounding jurisdictions that have had multiple vehicle break-ins as well.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN DEXTER

Route 25 in Stoddard County will be reduced today so MoDOT crews can perform pavement repairs.

Officials say that the section of roadway being reduced is located from Old Bloomfield Road to Route 60 in Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through 4 p.m.

MULTIPLE INCHES OF RAIN FORECAST FOR THIS WEEK

Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas could get relief from the ongoing drought conditions this week thanks to an extended weather system crossing the area.

According to officials with the National Weather Service, multiple rounds of showers or thunderstorms are expected for the entire area this week, with rainfall totals possibly exceeding two inches. Some locations might receive over three inches of rainfall.

The highest chances of rain will be today and Wednesday, however scattered storms will also be possible later in the week.

The strongest storms this week will be capable of gusty winds, heavy rain, and lightning as potential hazards.

AUTHORITIES IN KENNETT INVESTIGATING FIRE THAT INJURED FIVE PEOPLE

Authorities in Kennett are investigating a weekend fire that injured multiple people.

According to the Kennett Fire Department, firefighters responded to a fully involved structure fire Saturday morning on Varner Street.

Five patients were located outside the residence and were transported to out of state hospitals in serious condition.

Officials say that the fire is currently under investigation by the Kennett Fire Department in coordination with the Missouri Fire Marshal's Office.

MODOT TO HOST PUBLIC HEARING TODAY TO DISCUSS ROUTE 53 PROJECT IN POPLAR BLUFF

A public hearing has been scheduled for this afternoon to discuss a road project on Highway 53 in Poplar Bluff.

The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Ozark Foothills Regional Planning Commission.

The project includes adding a center turn lane on Route 53 from Route 142 to County Road 306. Additionally, this project includes a left turn lane at Route UU and access management measures to reduce conflict points along the corridor.

The public hearing will be open house style, and visitors can stop by anytime between 4 and 7 p.m. to discuss the details of the project with the project team.

DEBRIS FIRE UNDER INVESTIGATION IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

An early morning debris fire is under investigation in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Rector Police Department, a large debris pile was set ablaze sometime before 4:35 am Sunday.

The Rector Fire Department responded with two engines and a brush truck for containment and to protect an excavator nearby.

Rector police have identified a potential suspect and suspect vehicle in connection to the fire and officials say that formal charges will be brought on Tuesday.

NO INJURIES REPORTED AFTER PLANE CRASH AT RUNWAY IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

No one was injured after a plane crashed at a Northeast Arkansas runway over the weekend.

According to Pocahontas Mayor Keith Futrell, a private plane ran off the runway during landing at the Pocahontas Airport Sunday afternoon, and ran into a fence.

An investigation is being conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board, and Arkansas State Police.

STATE OFFICIALS ENCOURAGING PARENTS TO MAKE SURE THEIR CHILDREN ARE BUCKLED UP

Missouri state officials are encouraging parents to make sure their children are buckled up for Child Passenger Safety Week.

This week, Southeast Coalition for Roadway Safety partners and other safety advocates will host free Car Seat Check Events throughout southeast and south central Missouri.

Parents and caregivers with small children can ensure their car seats are installed correctly by visiting an inspection station throughout the area. Locations include Bloomfield, Hayti, Kennett, Sikeston, and Van Buren.

Child Passenger Safety Week runs through September 27th.

ONE IN CUSTODY ON SECOND DEGREE MURDER CHARGE IN DONIPHAN

A subject has been taken into custody on a second degree murder charge in Doniphan.

Doniphan Police Chief Mark Rodgers tells KWOC News, just before midnight Saturday morning, officers responded to a call reporting a potential homicide at a local residence. At the scene, authorities confirmed that one individual was deceased.

The victim has been identified as 32 year old Donald McFairen. His cause of death has not been released.

32 year old Sheena Ann McFarien has been taken into custody on charges of second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. She is being held without bond.

Rodgers added that the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN KILLED IN CRASH INVOLVING SCOOTER ON HIGHWAY 67

A Poplar Bluff man has died after a scooter he was driving was struck by a vehicle in Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 31 year old man was driving an eclectic scooter on US Highway 67 shortly before 11 pm Friday night when another vehicle struck the rear of the scooter.

The driver of the scooter, who was reportedly not wearing a safety device, was pronounced dead at the scene.

PEDESTRIAN KILLED AFTER BEING STRUCK BY VEHICLE IN A POPLAR BLUFF PARKING LOT

A pedestrian has died after being struck by a vehicle Saturday in Poplar Bluff.

Lieutenant Josh Stewart with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that a 70 year old woman was hit in the Walmart parking lot on South Westwood Boulevard.

The incident occurred when the woman was walking out of the store and was struck by a pickup truck making a left turn. Emergency crews transported the woman to a Memphis hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Officials say that it appears that the incident was an accident.

Lieutenant Josh Stewart says the driver remained at the scene and was released after speaking with officers.

GRADE SPAN CONSOLIDATION UNDER CONSIDERATION FOR POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOLS

Poplar Bluff school officials have announced that they are looking to possibly reduce the number of grade-level transitions for students within the school system.

According to a release by the school district, nearly twice as many patrons who completed a district-wide survey earlier this month favor consolidating grade spans, and more than half of the respondents supported adding up to two grades back to the lower elementary configuration.

The consideration, if approved by the Board of Education next month, would involve the removal of the upper elementary center concept, shifting the district’s priority back to neighborhood schools pre-1997, before the former 5th & 6th Grade Center on Oak Grove Road opened.

After test fitting over a dozen possible scenarios, a tentative path emerged that entails adding grades four and five back to the elementary configuration and sixth grade to the Junior High grade span by pruning across the district to make space for modern construction.

A demographic study slated to be released by Business Information Services in October will confirm whether student population projections have stagnated and a reduction in campus-wide square footage is in fact warranted. The district will seek further input from its larger Citizens' Advisory Council with the goal of finalizing the plan by spring.

DONIPHAN AND VAN BUREN AWARDED MULTIPLE GRANTS FOR COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

Two Southeast Missouri cities have been awarded multiple grants for community improvement projects.

The city of Doniphan was selected for five grants, totalling over 5.3 million dollars for projects such as low water crossing improvements, sewer system mapping, inflow and infiltration improvements, and Quick Creek Bank Stabilization.

The City of Van Buren is getting three grants, totalling over 3.6 million dollars, for pavement and sidewalk improvements as well as creating a comprehensive plan.

Ripley County will also be getting 1.6 million dollars for the paving of a roadway.

The Department of Economic Development announced the grants as a part of its Community Development Block Grant Mitigation Program.

MDC OFFERING REPORTS ON COLORS OF FALL FOLIAGE

Fall begins today and the Missouri Department of Conservation is encouraging people to enjoy fall foliage through camping, driving tours, hiking, or even floating.

The autumn equinox is today at 1:19 pm, ushering in the official beginning of the fall season.

To help Missourians get the best view of fall, the MDC is offering weekly online fall color updates from agency foresters all over the state at mdc.mo.gov/fallcolor.

The weekly reports include what kinds of trees are turning and suggestions on the best places to view them. The updates will run through November.

TWO MONTH ROAD PROJECT SET TO BEGIN TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY

Route M in Butler County will be reduced to one lane for nearly two months as construction crews perform pavement improvements.

According to MoDOT officials, Route M will be reduced between Route 67 and County Road 456 near Poplar Bluff.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Friday, November 21.

Route J in Stoddard County will be reduced today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

PUMPKIN HOLLOW OPENING FOR THE FALL SEASON THIS WEEKEND

A popular Northeast Arkansas destination will be opening for the fall season this weekend.

Pumpkin Hollow in Piggott, Arkansas will begin their daytime activities on Saturday.

Attractions will include the pumpkin patch, hayrides, pony rides, the corn maze, and more.

Opening night for the Horror in the Hollow nighttime attraction is also set for this Saturday.

WOMAN ARRESTED AFTER POINTING TOY GUN AT MOTORISTS IN CLAY COUNTY

A woman was taken into custody for allegedly pointing a toy gun at motorists in Northeast Arkansas.

According to Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole, shortly before 7 pm Wednesday night, the Sheriff’s Department received a call about a woman walking down the highway between Reyno and Datto. The caller advised that the woman was calling and pointing a gun at passing vehicles.

A deputy found the woman a short time later and said that as he approached the woman she was reaching for something in her waistband, so he drew his weapon.

The woman, identified as 21 year old Alyssa Daniel, of Missouri, was then taken into custody.

When the deputy removed the weapon, he observed that it was a toy that looked like a real gun.

Daniel was transported to the Clay County Detention Center and booked on charges of terroristic threatening - 1st degree/threatening physical injury and assault 2nd degree/reckless conduct creates risk of physical injury.

DEADLINE IS APPROACHING TO REGISTER FOR YOUTH BASKETBALL IN POPLAR BLUFF

Time is running out for parents to get their kids registered for youth basketball in Poplar Bluff.

According to Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation, today is the final day to register for 3rd through 6th grade youth basketball.

Games will be played at the Black River Coliseum beginning in late October/early November. Practices will tentatively start the second week of October.

NEW MDC AGENTS COMPLETE WATERFOWL TRAINING IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A group of new agents with the Missouri Department of Conservation were in Dunklin County recently to learn more about waterfowl.

The MDC held Waterfowl Enforcement School – one block of a 28-week training academy for new agents – to prepare those selected to enforce the Wildlife Code of Missouri and federal regulations.

This training provided agents with hands-on training to better protect Missouri’s waterfowl and ensure safe, fair hunting.

Agents practiced species identification, checked compliance with hunting laws, and worked with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on field scenarios. The training also highlighted positive communication with hunters and the importance of safe, ethical practices.

ALMOST THREE MONTH LONG ROAD PROJECT UNDERWAY IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Route N in Dunklin County will be closed for almost three months as contractor crews replace a box culvert.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the work zone is located from County Road 541 to Route 164 near Hornersville.

The work zone will be in place 24 hours a day with an anticipated completion date of Wednesday, December 10.

MAN INJURED IN CRASH ON WAPPAPELLO LAKE

A Lowndes man was injured in a crash on Wappapello Lake this week.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol two vessels collided on the lake Tuesday evening at the Old Greenville Recreation area.

The driver of one of the vessels, identified as a 70 year old man from Lowndes, was flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital with moderate injuries.

No injuries were listed for the other driver.

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE TO HOST MEET THE RAIDERS EVENT

The Three Rivers College athletic season is fast approaching and area residents will have the opportunity to meet some of the players who will be representing the Raiders this year.

The college is hosting a “Meet the Raiders” event beginning at 6 pm on September 22nd at the Libla Family Sports Complex.

The event will showcase the players and coaches for the Raiders basketball and baseball teams, the Lady Raiders basketball and softball teams, the rodeo team, the Esports team, and the cheer team.

That work zone will be in place from 8 am to 4 pm.

Also today, crews will be reducing Route J in Stoddard County from 11 am to 1 pm.

That work zone will be located from Tower Drive to Route AA in Bloomfield.

CREWS TO REDUCE ROUTE U IN WAYNE COUNTY TODAY FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS

Route U in Wayne County will be reduced today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from County Road 226 to County Road 733.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. During that time, the roadway will be open to local traffic only and will be guided with a pilot car.

ROADWORK TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY ON MULTIPLE BUTLER COUNTY ROADWAYS

MODOT crews will be working today in multiple locations in Butler County.

Route 51 in Butler County will be reduced from Route FF to Route 60 near Fisk so crews can perform pavement repairs.

That work zone will be in place from 8 am to 11 am.

Crews will then move to Route DD, which will be reduced between Route 51 and Route 60 from 11:30 am to 3 pm.

46TH ANNUAL OLD GREENVILLE BLACKPOWDER RENDEZVOUS AND 34TH ANNUAL OLD GREENVILLE DAYS SET FOR THIS WEEKEND

Two major community events will be coming together this weekend in the Greenville area.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI OFFICIALS WARNING OF FAKE $100 BILLS IN THE COMMUNITY

Officials in a Southeast Missouri community are warning business leaders and area residents that there have been reports of fake currency in the area.

According to the Malden Department of Public Safety, there has been an increase in fake $100 bills going around the community.

The bills are lacking certain security features that exist but mark with the money tester pen.

Police officials say that if you come across a bill that looks odd or seems off, contact the Malden DPS at 573-276-2211.

PUBLIC MEETING SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND AT SAM A BAKER STATE PARK IN WAYNE COUNTY

A town-hall meeting has been scheduled for this weekend in Wayne County to allow local residents to learn more about Sam A. Baker State Park.

The meeting has been scheduled for 10 am at Shelter #1 located at 5580 State Highway 143 in Patterson.

The public is invited to meet with park representatives, ask questions and share comments during the meeting.

HUNTER EDUCATION CLASS TO BE HELD IN DONIPHAN

A hunter education class will be held next month in Doniphan.

The Hunter Education Skills Session has been scheduled for Saturday, October 4th at the Doniphan High School Career Center. The event will be from 8 am to noon.

Students must be 11 years of age or older to attend and have completed the Knowledge Portion of the Hunter Education course before attending.

OKLAHOMA WOMAN KILLED IN WAYNE COUNTY MOTORCYCLE CRASH

A motorcycle rider from Oklahoma was killed in a crash Sunday afternoon in Wayne County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 54 year old woman was riding on Northbound Highway 67 when her motorcycle ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a sign, and overturned, ejecting her.

The woman, who was reportedly not wearing a safety device, was pronounced dead at the scene.

STODDARD COUNTY FAIR BEGINS TODAY

The 98th Stoddard County Fair kicks off tonight in Dexter.

The fair will begin with the parade in downtown Dexter this evening at 5:30 pm.

There will be multiple nights of entertainment and events through September 20th at the Stoddard County Fairgrounds, including the livestock auction, tractor pull, and more.

COLLISION NEAR KENNETT KILLS MOTORCYCLE RIDER FROM PARAGOULD

A vehicle collision in Dunklin County has resulted in the death of a motorcycle rider from Paragould.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly before 9 pm Sunday night, five miles south of Kennett, when a vehicle pulled into the path of a motorcycle on US Highway 412.

The driver of the motorcycle, who was reportedly not wearing a safety device, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Dunklin County Coroner.

MALDEN MAN CONVICTED OF NUMEROUS FELONIES INCLUDING DOMESTIC ASSAULT

A Malden man was convicted of numerous felonies last week following a two day trial in Dunklin County.

Ryan Dicus, Assistant Dunklin County Prosecuting Attorney, tells KWOC News that 29 year old Cameron Kerbyson has been found guilty of three counts of felony domestic assault in the second degree, and thirteen counts of felony tampering with a victim in a felony prosecution.

These charges stem from an incident in May of 2023 where Kerbyson violently assaulted his then-girlfriend by striking her, throwing her to the ground, kicking her, and attempting to smother her.

After his arrest, Kerbyson repeatedly tampered with the victim. He

attempted to convince her not to show up for required court appearances; to claim she filed a false police report, and to claim she was “under duress” when she made the statement.

Sentencing is set for November 6th, where Kerbyson faces a possible total sentence of 112 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS SET FOR TODAY ON ROUTE AA IN BUTLER COUNTY

Route AA in Butler County will be reduced to one lane today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from County Road 620 to Route 51.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

TWO STODDARD COUNTY ROADS TO BE REDUCED TODAY FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS

Missouri Department of Transportation crews will be performing pavement repairs in multiple locations today in Stoddard County.

According to officials, Route FF will be reduced to one lane from Route 60 to County Road 554 near Essex.

Also today, crews will be reducing Route AC to one lane from County Road 223 to County Road 237 near Bloomfield.

Both work zones will be set up today from 7 am to 4 pm.

ARCHERY DEER AND TURKEY SEASONS BEGIN TODAY IN MISSOURI

The archery portion of both deer and turkey seasons begins today in Missouri and the Missouri Department of Conservation is encouraging hunters to be safe.

The initial archery season will run from today through November 14th for both deer and turkey.

Hunters are reminded that only one antlered deer may be taken before the November Firearms Portion of deer season and only two antlered deer may be taken during the archery and firearms deer hunting seasons combined.

For turkeys, two turkeys of either sex may be taken during the archery and firearms portions combined.

During archery season, hunters can use longbows, compound bows, and recurve bows of any draw weight, crossbows, and hand-held string-releasing devices, among other devices.

THREE MEN SENTENCED IN CONNECTION TO ELK POACHING IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Three Missouri men connected to the 2023 illegal killing of a bull elk in Southeast Missouri have been sentenced.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, MDC’s Protection Branch began its investigation after a 14-year-old deer hunter reported finding the dead mature bull elk near Klepzig Mill in Shannon County during the November 2023 opening weekend of firearms deer season.

Officials say that Michael O’Neail, of De Soto, pleaded guilty earlier this month to illegally killing and abandoning the bull elk.

O’Neail was sentenced to 60 days in jail and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine. Execution of the 60-day jail sentence was suspended, pending successful completion of two years of probation and full payment of the $10,000 fine within one year of his sentencing date.

The two men not directly responsible for the elk poaching, Kevin Click and Travis Wadlow, both of Bonne Terre, each received a $500 fine plus court costs, and a mandatory $750 contribution to the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation for the illegal take or possession of white-tailed deer.

PURSUIT ENDS WHEN VEHICLE STRIKES DEER IN RIPLEY COUNTY

A man has been taken into custody following a pursuit Friday in Ripley County.

According to the Ripley County Sheriff’s Department, 20 year old Tony Portwood Jr, of Doniphan, was arrested following a short vehicle pursuit which ended when his vehicle struck a deer.

Officials say that Portwood was booked into the Ripley County Jail on charges of resisting arrest by fleeing, driving without a license, and careless and imprudent driving.

A passenger in the vehicle was released at the scene.

PB FIRE DEPARTMENT DONATES FIRETRUCK TO THREE RIVERS COLLEGE

The Poplar Bluff Fire Department recently made a big donation to Three Rivers College to help with firefighter training.

Through a grant, the Poplar Bluff Fire Department purchased a 2024 Rosenbauer Pumper fire truck to replace their 1980 Seagrave Pumper, which was no longer compliant with the National Fire Protection Association for fire extinguishment.

The grant stipulated that the non-compliant truck could only be used for training purposes, and college officials say that the PBFD chose to donate the truck to TRC.

The donation allowed TRC to donate its 1986 Pierce Pumper to the Grandin Rural Volunteer Fire Department to replace its 1979 International, which was stuck in first gear because of a transmission issue.

Poplar Bluff City Manager Robert Knodell said the trio of upgrades will provide long-term benefits to the community.

SHOULDER REPAIR PROJECT SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

A U.S. Route 67 Northbound ramp in Butler County will be reduced through the end of October as contractor crews perform shoulder repairs. 

According to officials, the ramp is located from Oak Grove Road to Northbound U.S. Route 67 in Poplar Bluff.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through Friday, October 31.

TWO ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO WAYNE COUNTY BURGLARY INVESTIGATION

Two people have been taken into custody in connection to a burglary investigation in Wayne County.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, earlier this week, officers received information regarding the whereabouts of items that had been reported stolen from a residence near Piedmont.

A search warrant was obtained and items from that burglary, along with other items believed to be stolen, were recovered at the residence of Tamara Harrison.

She was taken into custody and has been charged with stealing $750 or more, possession of a controlled substance, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

A second subject, identified as William Fobian, was linked to the stolen property and also arrested on a charge of stealing $750 or more along with an active warrant.

Officials say that the case is still under investigation.

CURRENT RIVER CLEANUP SET FOR SATURDAY

BURN BAN PUT INTO PLACE FOR CITY OF KENNETT

A southeast Missouri community is now under a burn ban.

Fire Chief Lance Davis, in coordination with Mayor Jake Crafton, issued the citywide burn ban on Thursday in response to ongoing dry weather conditions and the heightened risk of fire.

Davis says that this precautionary measure is intended to protect the safety of residents, property, and surrounding areas.

The ban prohibits the open burning of yard debris, including leaves, limbs, and grass, trash or waste burning, as well as bonfires or other open pit fires.

Davis added that the ban will remain in effect until further notice.

The Ripley County Fire Department has announced that Ripley County is also under a burn ban.

CONTRACTS AWARDED FOR PROJECTS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission has awarded contracts for various road projects in Southeast Missouri.

According to officials, an over 11 million dollar contract was awarded to West Plains Bridge & Grading, LLC, for a bridge replacement over the St. Francois River on Route 62 in Dunklin County.

A 148 thousand dollar contract was awarded to H. R. Quadri Contractors, LLC, for the replacement of a low water crossing one mile south of Route 34 on Route KK in Wayne County.

Additional information about the projects, including a timeline and what impacts there will be to traffic, will be released prior to the start of construction.

SEMO CON COMING THIS WEEKEND TO BLACK RIVER COLISEUM IN POPLAR BLUFF

Southeast Missouri’s anime, fantasy, science fiction, gaming, and comic convention is returning this weekend to Poplar Bluff.

SEMO Con is scheduled for Friday through Sunday at the Black River Coliseum.

POPLAR BLUFF TEACHER AWARDED GRANT MONEY TO CREATE A MORE INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL LEARNERS

A Poplar Bluff High School Teacher has been awarded grant money aimed at creating a more inclusive environment for all learners.

According to school officials, Keith Burson was awarded $750, between two grant programs at the end of last school year and the beginning of this one.

Burson received $250 in May through the Southeast Missouri Local Administrators of Special Education toward Access Algebra, an evidence-based curriculum designed for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

During the back-to-school convocation last month, Burson was presented $500 from the Missouri Retired Teachers Association Foundation toward hands-on manipulatives and visual aids to complement the curriculum component.

FIELDS OF FAITH SET FOR SEPTEMBER 28TH IN POPLAR BLUFF

The next FCA Fields of Faith event in Poplar Bluff is just over a couple weeks away.

POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR SELECTED AS SEMIFINALIST FOR NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP

A senior at Poplar Bluff High School has been selected as a semifinalist for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, Poplar Bluff’s Claire Funke will get the chance to compete for one of almost 7,000 scholarships.

Over 1.3 million juniors in about 20,000 high schools entered the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2024 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants.

The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2026 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July.

NORTHEAST ARKANSAS MAN KILLED IN CRASH INVOLVING A TRAIN NEAR PIGGOTT

A northeast Arkansas man was killed in a crash Tuesday involving a train.

According to Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole, the crash occurred Tuesday morning one mile north of Piggott on Clay County Road 346.

One person was killed in the crash, 80 year Ronnie Gurley, of Greenway.

Cole says that the crash was at a rural crossing that did not have crossing guards or lights.

AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING DEATHS OF TWO PEOPLE IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Authorities in Northeast Arkansas are investigating the deaths of two people.

According to Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole, during the evening of September 2nd, a deputy arrived at a residence in Knobel to conduct a welfare check. When the deputy got inside the residence, he found 45 year old Tina Keas and 69 year old Dewey Ramsey deceased.

Cole says that foul play is not suspected at this time and the bodies have been sent to the State Crime Lab to determine the cause of death.

Anyone who has information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Clay County Sheriff's Department at 870-598-2270.

MAN CHARGED WITH DOMESTIC ASSAULT IN STODDARD COUNTY

A man in Stoddard County has been charged following an incident over the weekend.

According to Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Sawyer Smith, Terry Beck has been charged with 1st degree domestic assault.

Beck is accused of causing serious physical injury to a victim on September 6th by striking her repeatedly in the face with his closed fists and choking her around the neck.

The victim suffered multiple broken facial bones and a hematoma behind her right eye during the assault.

Beck is being held in the Stoddard County Jail on no bond.

BRIDGE WORK IS SCHEDULED OVER THE NEXT WEEK IN WAYNE AND MADISON COUNTIES

The Missouri Department of Transportation is partnering with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials to apply a High Friction Thin Overlay on four U.S. Route 67 bridges in Wayne and Madison Counties.

Officials say the bridges are located over Cedar Creek in Wayne County and Little St. Francis River in Madison County.

Weather permitting, preparation will take place today and tomorrow, and the HFTO will be applied Tuesday, September 16 and Wednesday, September 17.

During the installation, U.S. 67 will be reduced to one lane in the vicinity of the work zones.

LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS TEAM UP FOR POPLAR BLUFF DOWNTOWN STRAWMAN COMPETITION

Multiple Poplar Bluff organizations are teaming up for the second annual Downtown Strawman Competition.

Strawmen will be placed on a tree or light post on the two blocks encompassing Main, Cedar, Broadway, and Vine Streets. Judges will evaluate each entry and choose a winner later this month.

Contestants can reserve their spot for $20 and all entry forms must be received by 12 pm on Wednesday, September 17th.

PARMA WOMAN APPOINTED AS ASSOCIATE CIRCUIT JUDGE FOR STODDARD COUNTY

A Parma woman will be taking a Judge position in Stoddard County.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe announced Friday that Beth "LeAnn" Ryan, of Parma, has been appointed as the Associate Circuit Judge for Stoddard County in the 35th Judicial Circuit.

She is filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Judge Joe Satterfield.

Ryan is the first assistant prosecutor in the Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney's Office and previously served as an assistant prosecuting attorney and juvenile attorney for the Pemiscot County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.

MAN KILLED IN SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A Northeast Arkansas man has died following a single vehicle crash.

According to the Greene County Sheriff Brad Snyder, Deputies and Arkansas State Police responded to the scene of a single vehicle fatal crash Friday morning involving a tractor trailer south of Delaplaine.

According to the Arkansas State Police, a vehicle driven by 60 year old Randall Nicholas, of Bono, ran off the roadway and overturned. Nicholas was killed in the wreck.

Officials say the crash occurred shortly after 3 am.

DEXTER MAN CHARGED WITH DRUG TRAFFICKING FOLLOWING TRAFFIC STOP

A traffic stop led to the arrest of an area man on a drug trafficking charge.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, on September 3rd, a deputy was assisting the Southeast Missouri Drug Task Force when he conducted a traffic stop as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation.

During the stop, the passenger, identified as Randall Moore Jr. of Dexter, was found to be in possession of three clear plastic baggies containing methamphetamine. The total weight of the narcotics seized was approximately 3 ounces.

Moore was taken into custody and a warrant was issued, charging him with felony trafficking drugs 1st degree and misdemeanor unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Stoddard County Chief Deputy Andrew Holden tells KWOC News that the investigation remains active, and additional charges may be forthcoming.

The Poplar Bluff Mules football team is getting ready for their home opener tonight.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FLOWN TO MEMPHIS HOSPITAL FOLLOWING MOTORCYCLE CRASH

A Poplar Bluff man was flown to an area hospital Wednesday evening following a motorcycle crash in Neelyville.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 27 year old man was riding the motorcycle on US Highway 67 when he struck the rear of a truck.

The man suffered serious injuries in the crash and was flown to a Memphis hospital.

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE TO HOST BATTLE OF THE BULLS THIS WEEKEND

Rodeo action will be returning to Poplar Bluff this weekend.

The Three Rivers College Rodeo Team is hosting the 3rd Annual Battle of the Bulls on Saturday at Ray Clinton Park.

RUN 4 THE ARTS SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY

The 10th annual Run 4 the Arts, hosted by Three Rivers College, is this weekend.

The four-mile run or walk, along with a one-mile walk, will be held at 8 am on Saturday at the College’s Poplar Bluff Campus. The course will begin and end in front of the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.

ORGANIZATIONS THAT HELP SOUTHEAST MISSOURI STUDENTS CHOSEN FOR AMERICORPS GRANTS

Multiple organizations that assist students in Southeast Missouri have been chosen to receive AmeriCorps Grants.

ServMO, the organization responsible for overseeing AmerirCorps programs in Missouri, has announced the recipients of thirteen 2025-2026 AmeriCorps Grants.

One of the grants will go to Poplar Bluff’s Promise, which provides tutoring services for elementary, middle, and junior high school students.

Another grant will go to the Missouri College Advising Corps, which provides college and career readiness services to students in 45 partner high schools within 30 school districts across Missouri, including in Butler County.

DEADLINE COMING UP TO PURCHASE TAGS FOR BULKY ITEM PICKUP

Today is the final day for Poplar Bluff residents to purchase tags for this month’s Bulky Item Pickup.

Residents can purchase bulk item tags from the City Collector’s office at City Hall for $20. The tags entitle you to the removal of four bulk items, such as couches or refrigerators.

No construction materials or small items will be picked up and the program is for residential areas only.

Today is the final day to purchase item tags at City Hall to be included in next week’s pick up, which will be conducted on Tuesday, September 9th.

WAPPAPELLO MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON STATUTORY RAPE WARRANT

A Wappapello man is scheduled to appear in court this morning on a statutory rape charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 35 year old Dustin Underwood was arrested shortly after 9 am Wednesday morning.

According to Missouri Case Net, a warrant was issued for Underwood last year, charging him with 1st degree statutory rape, 3rd degree child molestation, and there counts of statutory sodomy or attempted statutory sodomy.

Underwood is being held in the Butler County Justice Center on no bond ahead of his initial court appearance.

OZARK FEDERAL CREDIT UNION MERGES WITH CAPE REGIONAL CREDIT UNION

Two Southeast Missouri credit unions joined together at the beginning of this month.

According to a press release, Cape Regional Credit Union merged with Ozark Federal Credit Union, effective September 1st.

OFCU will add the two CRCU locations in Cape Girardeau and Fruitland to the OFCU family.

Officials say that the full conversion process will not be complete until early 2026.

Until then, CRCU members who have not yet opened an OFCU account will continue to use only CRCU branches and systems. Access to OFCU branches and services will become fully available to all members after the transition.

PUBLIC HEARING SET FOR SEPTEMBER 23RD TO DISCUSS ROAD PROJECT ON HIGHWAY 53

A public hearing has been scheduled for later this month to discuss a road project on Highway 53 in Poplar Bluff.

The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23 at the Ozark Foothills Regional Planning Commission.

The project includes adding a center turn lane on Route 53 from Route 142 to County Road 306. Additionally, this project includes a left turn lane at Route UU and access management measures to reduce conflict points along the corridor.

The public hearing will be open house style, and visitors can stop-by anytime between 4 and 7 p.m. to discuss the details of the project with the project team.

CENTER STAGE PRODUCTION OF ANNIE TO BEGIN ON FRIDAY

The Center Stage production of “Annie,” is set to begin Friday night.

AUTOPSY FINDS NO INJURIES OR TRAUMA ON MAN WHO WAS FOUND IN BLACK RIVER

Updating a story we have been following for you, an autopsy was performed on Tuesday for a man who was found dead over the weekend in the Black River.

Coroner Jim Akers tells KWOC News that the body of 47 year old Antonio Atkins was discovered near Ray Clinton Park at around 3:20 p.m. on Sunday.

Akers says that an autopsy showed no signs of injuries or trauma, however a cause of death was not determined.

He added that this leaves a few natural as well as accidental possibilities.

Atkins had reportedly been living without a home after losing his mother last year.

BOAT CRASH ON CURRENT RIVER INJURES GIDEON CHILD

A child from Gideon suffered minor injuries in a Labor Day weekend boat crash in Carter County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, two vessels collided head on in shallow water on the Current River, north of Van Buren.

The incident occurred Sunday afternoon, shortly after 1 pm.

A 12 year old child in one of the vessels received minor injuries and according to a report, the family sought their own medical treatment.

TOWNSHIP LINE ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY

Construction crews will be closing Township Line Road in Butler County today for a road project.

The road will be closed south of Red Oak Lane, near the roundabout with PP Highway.

According to officials with Duckett Construction, work is scheduled for 7 am to 6 pm, and crews will be able to provide service to local traffic only during that time period.

MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON CHILD MOLESTATION AND STATUTORY SODOMY CHARGES

A man was taken into custody last week on multiple charges including child molestation.

Officials announced on Tuesday that 63 year old Phillip Skaggs was arrested on Thursday following an investigation by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department.

Skaggs is facing multiple charges, including child molestation and statutory sodomy.

He remains in custody at the Wayne County Jail on no bond.

MICHIGAN MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN EARLY MORNING CRASH

A Michigan man was seriously injured early Tuesday morning in a Southeast Missouri crash.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 57 year old man was driving on Interstate 55 in Pemiscot County at around 2:30 am when his vehicle travelled off the left side of the roadway, struck a cable barrier, and overturned.

The man suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported to a Hayti hospital.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS TO FORCE CLOSURE OF NEW MADRID COUNTY ROAD THIS WEEK

Route J in New Madrid County will be closed over two days this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway to be closed is located from Route 153 to Route 62 near Malden.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. both today and tomorrow.

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE TO HOST BATTLE OF THE BULLS THIS WEEKEND

Rodeo action will be returning to Poplar Bluff this weekend.

The Three Rivers College Rodeo Team is hosting the 3rd Annual Battle of the Bulls on September 6th at Ray Clinton Park.

The event will begin at 7 pm featuring bull riding and barrel racing.

INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY AFTER BODY FOUND IN BLACK RIVER

The Butler County Coroner’s Office has confirmed the identity of a body that was recovered from the Black River over the weekend.

Coroner Jim Akers tells KWOC News that the body of 47 year old Antonio Atkins, of Portageville, was discovered near Ray Clinton Park at around 3:20 p.m. on Sunday.

An autopsy is scheduled for later today to determine the cause of death.

An investigation into the death is being conducted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Poplar Bluff Police Department, and Butler County Coroner’s Office.

CLARKTON MAN KILLED IN MOTORCYCLE CRASH

A Clarkton man was killed in a motorcycle crash over the weekend.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 52 year old man was riding the motorcycle on a New Madrid County Farm Road when the vehicle travelled off a dead end roadway and into a ditch.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene Saturday Night by the New Madrid County Coroner.

FOUNDATION REPAIR AND BASEMENT WATERPROOFING COMPANY ANNOUNCES NEW REGIONAL HEADQUARTERS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A foundation repair and basement waterproofing company has announced that they will be expanding into Missouri with three new regional headquarters across the state, including one in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri Department of Economic Development, Acculevel, Inc., is investing $8.7 million dollars in the state and creating 41 new jobs at each of its new regional headquarters in Kennett, Sarcoxie, and Smithville.

Construction is expected to be finished at the Kennett and Sarcoxie facilities by the end of 2026, with Smithville to follow shortly thereafter.

Officials say that new jobs added as part of Acculevel’s establishment of its facilities will pay an average wage well above the county averages.

PAVEMENT REPAIR PROJECT BEGINS TODAY ON US HIGHWAY 60 IN CARTER COUNTY

Westbound Route 60 in Carter and Shannon counties will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route P in Carter County to Route W in Shannon County.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday, from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily

BRIDGE REPLACEMENT TO FORCE CLOSURE OF STODDARD COUNTY ROAD THROUGH MID NOVEMBER

Route O in Stoddard County will be closed beginning this morning as contractor crews replace the bridge over Drainage Ditch 287 near Painton. 

The bridge is located between County Road 337 and Route P.

Weather permitting, completion is anticipated by Monday, November 11. This road will remain closed until the work is complete and a sign detour will be in place.

FAIRDEALING WOMAN KILLED IN SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH

A woman was killed in an early morning crash in Stoddard County.

According to the authorities, the crash occurred shortly after 2 am Thursday morning on US Highway 51, three miles south of Puxico, when a vehicle ran off the roadway and struck an embankment.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as a 44 year old woman from Fairdealing, was pronounced dead at the scene by Stoddard County Coroner Brent Stidham.

MULES FOOTBALL KICKS OFF REGULAR SEASON TONIGHT IN JONESBORO

The Poplar Bluff Mules Football team is looking to get the 2025 football season off to a great start tonight against Valley View High School, from Jonesboro, Arkansas.

The Mules will travel to Jonesboro today, with kickoff set for 7 pm. The teams also kicked off the season last year with Valley View picking up a 42-14 win in Poplar Bluff.

The Mules went 4-5 in the regular season last year before falling to Cape Central in the Class 5, District 1 Semi-Finals. Valley View finished the 2024 campaign with a 12-1 record, with their season coming to an end in the Arkansas Class 5A State Semifinals.

HIGHWAY PATROL URGES SAFETY FOR LABOR DAY WEEKEND

With Labor Day weekend almost here, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is urging everyone to be safe during the holiday weekend.

The Highway Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. this weekend.

Troopers will be patrolling Missouri’s roadways, enforcing Missouri’s speed limit, seat belt, and impaired driving laws, in addition to being available to assist motorists.

Last year, 17 people were killed and 498 were injured in Missouri over the Labor Day holiday weekend in 1,058 traffic crashes. Also, 110 people were arrested by the Highway Patrol for driving while intoxicated.

The Labor Day holiday is also a busy boating weekend. In 2024, there were four boating crashes which included two fatalities and eight injuries.

TWO PEOPLE FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A CRASH IN MISSOURI BOOTHEEL

Two people were flown from the scene of a crash earlier this week in Southeast Missouri.

According to authorities, the crash happened south of Caruthersville Wednesday evening when a truck ran off the side of Highway D and overturned.

The driver and a passenger in the vehicle, identified as a 55 year old man from Ridgley, Tennessee, and a 44 year old man from Caruthersville, each suffered serious injuries in the crash and were flown to a Memphis hospital.

DRIVER EXAMINATION STATIONS TO BE CLOSED MONDAY IN MISSOURI

Missouri state officials are reminding motorists that driver examinations will not be available on Monday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, driver examination stations throughout the state will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day.

Officials say that normal operations will resume on Tuesday.

TRUCK PARKING ON INTERSTATE 55 IN PEMISCOT COUNTY TO BE CLOSED NEXT WEEK

Truck drivers should be aware of a closure scheduled for next week in Southeast Missouri.

Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation tell KWOC News that the northbound Pemiscot County truck parking on Northbound Interstate 55 in Pemiscot County will be closed so crews can perform facility repairs.

Weather permitting, work will begin on Monday, with the site re-opening by 4 pm on Thursday.

MASS CASUALTY TRAINING EVENT SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

A mass casualty training event is scheduled for today in Poplar Bluff.

The event will be held this morning on Kennedy and Baron Road behind Municipal Utilities.

Butler County EMS Communications and Public Relations chief Katy Ormsby tells KWOC News that the training helps emergency responders prepare for a mass casualty emergency such as a natural disaster.

The exercise will include a simulated three vehicle accident with 15 patients.

Motorists are being asked to avoid the area this morning.

TWO ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO STOLEN VEHICLE IN STODDARD COUNTY

Two people have been taken into custody in connection to a reported stolen vehicle in Stoddard County.

According to court documents, on Monday, a person called 911 stating that his vehicle had been stolen and that he had two suspects boxed in, awaiting law enforcement.

At the scene, officers spoke to one of the suspects, identified as 33 year old Courtney Clark, of Lilbourn, who admitted to taking the

vehicle that was broken down on a field road. Clark stated that she had read online that if a vehicle was abandoned, she could take it and fill out a form for the vehicle to become hers.

The second suspect, 30 year old Dell Smith Jr, of Piggott, Arkansas, was also taken into custody at the scene.

Both Clark and Smith are facing felony charges of stealing - $25,000 or more and tampering with a motor vehicle. Clark is facing additional charges of possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, and DWI.

Both are being held in the Stoddard County Jail.

HEALTH EXPO TO BE HELD TODAY AT BLACK RIVER COLISEUM

A free health event has been scheduled for today in Poplar Bluff.

Missouri Highlands Healthcare is holding the Hope and Healing Wellness Expo from 9 am to 2 pm at the Black River Coliseum.

The event is free to attend and will include health screenings, wellness and recovery resources, a food bank, and more.

RESERVATIONS FOR MANAGED WATERFOWL HUNTS TO BEGIN NEXT WEEK

The Missouri Department of Conservation will be accepting reservations for managed waterfowl hunts beginning September 1st.

MDC offers managed waterfowl hunting on more than a dozen conservation areas specially managed with a focus on wetlands. Hunters can apply for a reservation or participate in a daily morning drawing for opportunities to hunt at these areas. MDC also offers waterfowl hunting in other conservation areas.

The pre-season reservation period will run from September 1 to the 18th.

Missouri residents and qualifying non-residents, such as students from out of state or members of the military stationed in Missouri, can apply online for a reservation to guarantee them an opportunity to hunt on a specific day in a specific area.

Residents and nonresidents can also arrive at a managed waterfowl hunting area the morning they wish to hunt and participate in the daily morning drawing for the possibility of getting a hunting spot.

Applicants for waterfowl reservations must have their required permits to apply, and their Federal Duck Stamp to hunt.

OVER TWO MONTH ROAD PROJECT UNDERWAY NEAR MALDEN

U.S. Highway 62 in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot lane restriction for over two months as construction crews perform asphalt overlay.

The work zone is located from the Arkansas State Line to Route 25 near Malden.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Friday, October 31.

MODOT OFFICIALS ANNOUNCE PROPOSED BRIDGE PROJECT IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced plans to replace a bridge in New Madrid County.

The bridge to be replaced is the Route ZZ bridge over Drainage Ditch 52.

Work to replace the bridge could begin as early as spring 2027. As construction is underway, the roadway will be closed in the vicinity of the structure for approximately four months.

Any person affected by this project may request that a public meeting be held in regard to the proposed improvements.

Requests for a public meeting shall be in writing and must be submitted by Tuesday, September 9.
