INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY AFTER BODY FOUND IN MISSOURI BOOTHEEL

An investigation is underway after a body was found over the weekend in Southeast Missouri.

According to Pemiscot County Sheriff Joe Bryant, the body of an unidentified black male was found in a field south of Hayti Heights, early Saturday morning.

Bryant says that it is believed the body was there for about one week.

An autopsy was conducted on Tuesday and the final report has not been completed at this time.

Sheriff Bryant added that the matter is still under investigation and officials are working to make a positive identification of the individual so that family members can be notified.

BUTLER COUNTY SCHOOL AWARDED $500,000 FOR SCHOOL SAFETY

A Butler County school district has been awarded half of a million dollars to improve school safety.

Twin River R-10 officials announced Wednesday that the district had been chosen for a US Department of Justice $500,000 COPS grant.

Officials say that the grant money will go to improve school safety and physical security upgrades.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING EARLY MORNING MOTORCYCLE CRASH

A Paragould man has died following a motorcycle crash early Wednesday morning in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Arkansas State Police, 52 year old Frank Galgano was ejected from his motorcycle after the vehicle collided with a curb and then struck a concrete driveway.

The crash occurred at around 2:15 am Wednesday morning.

Officials say that Galgano was killed in the crash.

MAN ARRESTED FOR HOLDING TWO PEOPLE AT GUNPOINT

A man was taken into custody this week in Corning for allegedly holding two people at gunpoint.

According to the Corning Police Department, officers responded to a report on Tuesday of a man holding two individuals at gunpoint and threatening to shoot them.

At the scene, officers apprehended the man, identified as 63 year old Stephen Lyons, of Corning, without incident.

An investigation revealed that Lyons had exited his residence and pointed a shotgun at two individuals who were burning leaves on their own property.

Lyons was booked into the Clay County Detention Center on charges of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by certain persons, and public intoxication.

WOMAN FLOWN TO MEMPHIS HOSPITAL AFTER SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH NEAR COOTER

Two people were flown from the scene of a single vehicle crash Tuesday night.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at around 7:30 pm Tuesday on Pemiscot County Road 567, near Cooter.

A vehicle, driven by a 26 year old Jonesboro woman, ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned.

The driver suffered serious injuries in the crash, while an infant passenger received moderate injuries. They were both flown to Memphis hospitals.

A two year old child in the vehicle had minor injuries.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN APPOINTED TO MISSOURI COURT OF APPEALS

A Southeast Missouri man has been appointed to the Southern District of the Missouri Court of Appeals.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has announced that Bryan Nickell, of Sikeston, will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Mary Sheffield.

Nickell is an attorney and partner at the Law Offices of Blanton, Nickell, Collins, Douglas, Hanschen, and Peters LLC, specializing in the areas of litigation, including medical malpractice defense, commercial litigation, banking law, and education law.

He also serves as the attorney and secretary of the Sikeston R-6 School Board and is an active member of the Sikeston Jaycees.

POPLAR BLUFF’S ANNA BELL WINS MSHSAA CLASS 3 GIRLS GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

A Poplar Bluff student has won the MSHSAA Class 3 State Girls Individual Golf Championship.

Mules Freshman Anna Bell came in first place after the two round tournament on Monday and Tuesday at Twin Hills Country Club in Joplin.

Bell’s teammate, Senior Rhyan Waddell, finished in 13th place.

TWO TEENS INJURED IN CRASH NEAR DONIPHAN

Two teenagers were injured, one seriously, in a crash Monday afternoon near Doniphan.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the crash occurred at around 4 pm when a vehicle crossed the center of Missouri Highway 21 and struck another vehicle.

The driver of the first vehicle, identified as a 17 year old girl from Doniphan, suffered moderate injuries, while a 19 year old female passenger in the second vehicle received serious injuries in the crash.

Both were transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

SNAP BENEFITS IN MISSOURI MAY NOT BE ISSUED NEXT MONTH DUE TO THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN

SNAP benefit participants in Missouri may not receive their benefits next month due to the ongoing government shutdown.

The Missouri Department of Social Services has announced that due to the federal government shutdown, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service has informed state agencies that November 2025 SNAP cannot be issued at this time.

SNAP benefits are 100 percent federally funded through USDA-FNS. DSS has received official communication from USDA that there is not sufficient funding to issue SNAP benefits for the month of November.

State officials are encouraging SNAP participants to look at the potential of using their October balance to stretch into November if possible.

QULIN MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG AND FORGERY CHARGES

A Qulin man was taken into custody Monday evening in Wayne County on multiple felony charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 28 year old Joseph Robinson was arrested on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance for methamphetamine and suboxone as well as forgery.

Robinson also reportedly had a felony warrant out of Wayne County.

Following the arrest, he was held at the Wayne County jail.

THIS WEEK IS NATIONAL SCHOOL BUS SAFETY WEEK

This week is National School Bus Safety Week and parents are being encouraged to make sure their kids are safe around school buses.

When your kids are waiting for the school bus, have them wait in a location where the driver can see them while driving down the street.

Warn children that if they drop something getting on and off the bus, they should never pick it up. Instead, they should tell the driver and follow the driver’s instructions.

If you meet your child at the bus stop after school, wait on the side where the child will be dropped off, not across the street. Children can be so excited to see you after school that they dash across the street and forget the safety rules.

Motorists are also reminded to be aware of all school zones and school bus stop signs.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY IN THE CAMPBELL AREA

Route 53 in Dunklin County will be reduced today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform bridge maintenance.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route 62 to Bailey Street near Campbell.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

JUVENILE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO FATAL SHOOTING IN SIKESTON

Updating a story we have been following for you, a juvenile has been taken into custody in connection to a fatal shooting Thursday evening in Sikeston.

According to Sergeant Tyler Rowe, at around 6:45 pm Thursday night, the Sikeston Department of Public Safety received a ShotSpotter alert for several gunshots detected in the 400 block of East Gladys Street.

A gunshot victim was taken to an area hospital and later died of their injuries.

Rowe says that a juvenile has been taken into custody and been formally charged with murder 2nd degree, armed criminal action, four felony counts of child endangerment, and other misdemeanor charges.

Rowe added that due to the sensitive and confidential nature of this incident involving juveniles, this is the only information that can be released at this time and the incident remains under investigation.

QULIN WOMAN INJURED IN MOTORCYCLE CRASH OVER THE WEEKEND

A Qulin woman was the only person injured in a motorcycle crash over the weekend.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that a SUV failed to yield to a motorcycle on Highway N in Butler County when the crash occurred.

The motorcycle driver, identified as a 33 year old woman from Qulin, suffered serious injuries and was transported by air to a Memphis hospital.

MAGNITUDE 2.3 EARTHQUAKE HITS SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MONDAY MORNING

A small earthquake was reported in Southeast Missouri early Monday morning.

According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 2.3 earthquake was recorded shortly before 3 am.

The earthquake was centered less than a mile west of Risco and had a depth of around 3.9 miles.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A BUTLER COUNTY CRASH

A Poplar Bluff man was injured in a crash Sunday afternoon.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on Route M, three miles west of Poplar Bluff, when one vehicle turned into the path of another.

A passenger in the first vehicle, identified as a 39 year old Poplar Bluff man, received serious injuries in the crash and was flown to a Memphis hospital.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

No injuries were listed for the occupants of the second vehicle.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULED FOR TODAY ON ROUTE MM IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Route MM in Dunklin County will be reduced today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform bridge maintenance near Malden.

The section of roadway affected is located from Route J to County Road 122.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

MODOT CREWS TO BE WORKING IN PEMISCOT COUNTY THIS WEEK

Route B in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs. 

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route 412 near Hayti to Route A near Wardell.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, through Thursday. Flaggers and a pilot car will be in place to guide traffic.

POLICE INVESTIGATING FATAL SHOOTING IN SIKESTON

An investigation is underway following a fatal shooting Thursday evening in Sikeston.

According to Sergeant Tyler Rowe, at around 6:45 pm Thursday night, the Sikeston Department of Public Safety received a ShotSpotter alert for several gunshots detected in the 400 block of East Gladys Street.

Rowe says the name of the victim is not currently being released due to the age of the victim and privacy of the victim’s family.

The SEMO Major Case Squad has been activated and is investigating this incident.

MAYNARD WOMAN KILLED IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS CRASH

A Maynard woman has died from injuries she received in a crash over the weekend.

According to the Arkansas State Police, the crash occurred early Saturday morning when a vehicle crossed the centerline of a road in rural Randolph County and struck another vehicle head on.

The driver of the second vehicle, identified as 55 year old Ann Davis, of Maynard, was killed in the crash.

The driver and a passenger in the first vehicle were injured and transported to area hospitals.

THREE DEAD FOLLOWING CRASH ON HIGHWAY 412 IN GREENE COUNTY

Three people were killed in a crash Friday afternoon in rural Greene County.

According to the Arkansas State Police, a vehicle was making a pass when it struck another vehicle on US Highway 412.

A 52 year old passenger in the first vehicle, identified as Sherry Felty, of Paragould, was killed in the crash.

The driver and passenger in the second vehicle, 40 year old Duane Smith Jr. and 31 year old Christine Sta Ana, both of Jonesboro, have also died.

The driver of the first vehicle and a minor passenger in the second vehicle were injured and transported to area hospitals.

HUNTERS ENCOURAGED TO SHARE THEIR HARVEST WITH FAMILIES IN NEED

Hunters across the state of Missouri are being asked to share their harvest this fall to help feed families in need.

The Missouri Department of Conservation Share the Harvest program provides food to the hungry through deer meat donated by hunters.

Hunters can choose to give part or all of any deer they harvest. They simply bring their deer to an approved meat processor to process the venison, usually into ground meat, where it is then packaged for distribution.

Share the Harvest is a statewide partnership between MDC, the Conservation Federation of Missouri, cooperating meat processors, and hunters.

LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS TO CRACK DOWN ON DISTRACTED DRIVING THIS WEEK

Law enforcement officers in Northeast Arkansas will be cracking down on distracted driving this week.

The Arkansas State Police Highway Safety Office has announced the launch of the statewide distracted driving campaign, “Put the Phone Away or Pay.”

The high-visibility enforcement campaign will run through October 25 to remind drivers of the deadly dangers and legal consequences of distracted driving.

In 2023, distracted driving crashes killed 3,275 people across the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Of those killed, 611 were pedestrians, cyclists and other non-motorists.

Seven percent of drivers ages 15 to 20 who were involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted. This age group had the largest proportion of drivers who were distracted at the time of the fatal crash.

SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE THIS WEEKEND FOR SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

There are chances of severe weather this weekend in Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, strong to severe thunderstorms are possible Saturday afternoon through early Sunday morning.

The thunderstorms will have the potential to produce heavy rainfall, which may lead to minor localized flooding.

There will also be a low risk of a couple brief tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, and large hail.

POPLAR BLUFF MIDDLE SCHOOL TO HOST PARADE FOR VETERANS DAY

Poplar Bluff area veterans are being invited to participate in a parade for Veteran’s Day.

The Poplar Bluff Middle School is hosting a Veteran’s Day Parade on Tuesday, November 11th. Veterans who want to be involved will get to drive through a parade loop around the PBMS campus to be recognized and cheered on by students.

The Parade will begin at 9:15 am.

Only veterans, students, and school staff will be allowed on campus for the event.

VIETNAM WAR ERA TEST ROUND FOUND IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS TRUCK

A Northeast Arkansas resident had a surprise waiting for him this week in a truck he purchased.

According to Greene County Sheriff Brad Snyder, Wednesday night, a Gainsville resident reported finding an old intact military shell located underneath the seat of a truck he recently purchased.

The Little Rock Air Force Base’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit was contacted and once seeing photos of the shell, a team was immediately dispatched to Greene County from the air base.

It was determined that the round was a Swedish test round from around the Vietnam War era. Due to it being a test round, there was no explosive material contained in the shell and it was deemed to be inert and safe.

Sheriff Snyder says that one EOD tech did mention that it was the best example of a test round that he had ever seen in his career.

Snyder added that if you see anything like this, do not try to touch or manipulate it. Contact law enforcement so that the appropriate personnel can examine the item and determine the proper, and safest, course of action.

EAST CARTER CLAIMS FIRST OFC BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SINCE 2020

East Carter High School has won its first Ozark Foothills Conference baseball championship since 2020.

The top seed East Carter Redbirds defeated six seed Doniphan Dons Thursday 14-0 in the finals of the OFC Tournament at Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff.

In the OFC third place game on Thursday, Greenville beat Twin Rivers 15-0.

Registration is almost over for adult women’s and coed volleyball in Poplar Bluff.

MAJOR CONSTRUCTION PROJECT UNDERWAY ON US ROUTE 67 IN WAYNE COUNTY

Northbound and southbound U.S. Route 67 in Wayne County is being reduced to one lane with a 16-foot width restriction so contractor crews can construct median crossovers.

MoDOT officials say the crossovers will be constructed in preparation for replacing the northbound U.S. 67 bridge over Otter Creek and the section of roadway being reduced is located between County Roads 546 and 547.

Weather permitting, work to construct the median crossovers is anticipated to be completed by Sunday, November 30.

STUDENT TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AFTER SHOTGUN FOUND IN VEHICLE AT AREA SCHOOL

A student has been taken into custody after a gun was found in a vehicle at an area school.

Twin Rivers Superintendent Robert Brown tells KWOC News that Wednesday afternoon Twin Rivers High School officials had been alerted to a shotgun that was in the back seat of a student's vehicle in the school parking lot.

School personnel confirmed that the shotgun was in the unlocked vehicle and secured it without incident.

Brown says that the incident did not pose an active threat to students or staff, and no one was harmed.

The Butler County Sheriff's Department and local juvenile office were notified and the student was taken into custody.

Brown says that parents should take this opportunity to discuss with their children the importance of reporting any safety concerns to a teacher or staff member.

The 2025 Ozark Foothills Conference Baseball Tournament will come to an end today.

THREE MILLION DOLLAR WINNING SCRATCHERS TICKET PURCHASED IN WAYNE COUNTY

One person is now a millionaire thanks to a fortunate stop at a Greenville gas station.

According to the Missouri Lottery, the player uncovered a $3 million top prize on a “300X” Scratchers ticket he purchased during the stop.

The prize was later claimed at the Lottery’s Springfield Regional office.

TWO PEOPLE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN CRASH EAST OF KENNETT

Two people were injured in a crash Tuesday afternoon near Kennett.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on US Highway 412, two miles east of Kennett, when one vehicle sideswiped another.

Two people in the second vehicle suffered serious injuries in the wreck. The driver, a 28 year old man from Blytheville, was taken by EMS to a Jonesboro hospital. A passenger in the vehicle, identified as a 40 year old woman from Kennett, was flown to a Memphis hospital.

No injuries were listed for the occupants of the first vehicle.

MODOT CREWS TO BE TRAINING FOR WINTER WEATHER TODAY

Do not be surprised if you see an increased number of MoDOT vehicles on the roads today.

The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold its annual statewide winter operations drill beginning this morning.

During today’s drill, MoDOT employees will react to a simulated forecast of significant snow for the entire state. The department’s emergency operations centers will be activated and maintenance employees will be deployed to their trucks. Emergency communications systems will also be tested.

In rural areas, crews will deploy after 8 a.m. In urban areas, the drill will not begin until after 9 a.m.

The exercise should be completed by 3 p.m.

Officials say that with high turnover rates and many positions still open, driver training is more critical than ever.

BERNIE RESIDENT WINS FIRST PLACE IN MISSOURI DNR PHOTO CONTEST

A Bernie resident has taken home first place in a statewide photo contest.

On Tuesday, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources announced the winners for the 2025 MoDNR Photo Contest.

Bernie’s Lyndsey Neely won 1st place in the People Enjoying Missouri’s Outdoors Category.

The photo featured a young child playing in the mud in the first Bernie cotton field.

The winning photographs can be found on the Missouri Resources magazine website at missouriresources.mo.gov.

PUBLIC MEETING SCHEDULED FOR THIS MONTH TO DISCUSS REPLACING BRIDGE OVER ST. FRANCIS RIVER IN FISK

The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing this month to discuss replacing the Route 51 bridge over the St. Francis River in Butler County.

The hearing will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28th at the Fisk Community Center on Garfield Street.

The project includes replacing this aging structure with a new, wider bridge. The current bridge is 21 feet wide, and the new bridge will be 36 feet wide.

During construction, Route 51 will be closed in the vicinity of the bridge with traffic detouring to use Route DD in Fisk. The Fisk St. Francis River access will remain open, but boat traffic will not be able to travel south during construction.

Tentatively, the project is expected to be let in November 2026. Construction could start as early as the beginning of 2027. Completion is anticipated approximately nine months after the start of construction.

The public hearing will be open house style, and visitors can stop by anytime between 4 and 6 p.m. to discuss the details of the proposals with the project team.

TEENAGER SERIOUSLY INJURED IN STODDARD COUNTY CRASH

An area teenager was one of two people injured in a crash Monday afternoon in Stoddard County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 16 year old girl, from Dexter, was a passenger in a vehicle on US Highway 60 when the vehicle failed to yield to another vehicle.

The girl, who was not wearing a safety device, was ejected during the wreck and later taken to a Cape Girardeau hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the second vehicle received minor injuries in the collision.

BICYCLIST STRUCK BY A VEHICLE IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A bicyclist was struck by a vehicle Tuesday in northeast Arkansas.

According to Paragould city officials, shortly before noon, dispatchers received a report of an accident on Court Street.

At the scene, officers found a male on the ground that had been riding a bike that was struck by a vehicle.

Witnesses told officers that the male on the bike was in the outside lane when he attempted to change lanes. Once he initiated the lane change he pulled in front of the vehicle.

The bicyclist was flown to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN EXECUTED FOR 2005 DEATH OF MSHP TROOPER

A southeast Missouri man has been executed for the murder of a Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper.

Lance Shockley was convicted in 2009 for the March 2005 shooting death of Sergeant Carl Graham Jr., who was investigating a fatal crash that involved Shockley.

Shockley was unanimously convicted of first-degree murder along with three aggravating factors. His case was reviewed and upheld by the Missouri Supreme Court, the federal district court, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.

Shockley was executed by lethal injection Tuesday evening at the state prison in Bonne Terre.

He is the first person put to death this year in Missouri. The last execution in the state was on December 3rd, when Christopher Collings received a lethal injection for sexually assaulting and killing a 9-year-old girl.

TWIN RIVERS TRUNK OR TREAT TRUNK OR TREAT SET FOR OCTOBER 26

The Twin Rivers Student Council has announced the date for their Halloween Trunk or Treat.

The event is scheduled for 6 to 8 pm on Friday, October 31st in the parking lot of the Twin Rivers Fisk campus.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN TO BE EXECUTED THIS WEEK FOR 2005 DEATH OF MSHP TROOPER

A southeast Missouri man is set to be executed this week for the murder of a Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper.

Lance Shockley, of West Plains, was convicted in 2009 for the March 2005 shooting death of Sergeant Carl Graham Jr., who was investigating a fatal crash that involved Shockley.

Shockley was unanimously convicted of first-degree murder along with three aggravating factors. His case was reviewed and upheld by the Missouri Supreme Court, the federal district court, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.

On June 18th, the Missouri Supreme Court issued a warrant of execution for Shockley, ordering him to be executed within a 24 hour period beginning at 6 pm this evening.

On Monday, Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe announced that Shockley’s request for clemency would not be granted.

Officials with the Friends of Wappapello Lake have announced the dates for the 2025 Festival of Lights Auto Tour.

The 33rd Annual Auto Tour will be held at the Redman Creek East Campground from November 28th through December 27th.

DOZENS OF PEOPLE REPORT FEELING MAGNITUDE 2.9 EARTHQUAKE OVER THE WEEKEND

Over two dozen people have reported feeling an earthquake strike Southeast Missouri early Saturday morning.

According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 2.9 earthquake was recorded at 3:28 am Saturday.

The earthquake was centered approximately 2.7 miles northeast of Steele and had a depth of over six miles.

MAN SOUGHT IN CONNECTION TO SHOOTING IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Authorities in Southeast Missouri are searching for a man in connection to a weekend shooting.

According to the Hayti Police Department, 26 year old Austin Proby has been formally charged with assault 1st degree, with multiple other felony charges pending, following a shooting incident early Saturday morning.

Anyone who has information on Proby’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department at 573-333-4101.

Do not approach Proby, as officials say he is considered armed and dangerous.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON FLEEING CHARGE

A Poplar Bluff man was taken into custody on multiple charges late Sunday night.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 32 year old Kevin Parker was arrested shortly after 11 pm on a felony charge of aggravated fleeing a stop for detention.

Parker is also facing charges of driving while intoxicated, failure to drive on the right half of the roadway resulting in an accident, and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle

Following the arrest he was held in the Butler County Jail.

STREET CLOSURE SET FOR TODAY IN DONIPHAN

A Doniphan street will be closed today due to utility repairs.

According to city officials, the repairs will force the temporary closure of the 700 block of North Grand Street.

Motorists are asked to use caution in the area and choose an alternate route if possible. The street will reopen as soon as repairs are completed.

2025 OFC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT BEGINS TODAY

The 2025 OFC Baseball Tournament, featuring eight area schools, begins today.

East Carter captured the top seed for the tournament and will play number 8 seed Clearwater at 4 pm today.

The other three first round matchups will see Puxico taking on Greenville at 10 am, Neelyville challenging Twin Rivers at noon, and Naylor facing Doniphan at 2 pm.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING WEEKEND CRASH NEAR DONIPHAN

Authorities say that a Northeast Arkansas man has died from injuries he received in a crash over the weekend.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC news that a 34 year old man, from Maynard, Arkansas, was driving on Missouri Highway 21 in Ripley County when his vehicle ran off the roadway and struck an embankment.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash occurred shortly before 4 pm Saturday, 13 miles south of Doniphan.

ARKANSAS MAN INJURED IN BUTLER COUNTY CRASH

An Arkansas man was injured in a single vehicle crash on Friday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 55 year old man, from Piggott, was driving on US Highway 60 when his vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree.

The crash occurred one mile east of Poplar Bluff at around 7:30 am Friday.

Officials say that the man was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital with serious injuries.

DRIVER EXAMINATION STATIONS TO BE CLOSED TODAY IN MISSOURI

Missouri state officials are reminding motorists that driver examinations will not be available today due to the holiday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, driver examination stations throughout the state will be closed today in observance of Columbus Day.

Officials say that normal operations will resume on Tuesday.

GREAT CENTRAL U.S. SHAKEOUT SCHEDULED FOR THURSDAY

Millions of people all across the central United States will be participating in the Great Central U.S. Shakeout Earthquake Drill later this week.

The drill is scheduled for 10:16 am on Thursday and officials say the goal is to get everyone prepared for a possible major earthquake.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE SET FOR THIS WEEK ON INTERSTATE 55

Southbound Interstate 55 in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.

The section of roadway being reduced is located between mile markers 17 and 15.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Wednesday, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

GUNS, DRUGS, AND STOLEN PROPERTY UNCOVERED DURING SEARCH OF DONIPHAN HOME

One subject has been taken into custody after guns, drugs, and stolen property were discovered at a Ripley County home.

On Wednesday, officers with the Ripley County Sheriff's Office, the Carter County Sheriff’s Office, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol executed a search warrant at a residence on Mourning Dove Lane in Doniphan.

According to the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, during the search, officers seized two stolen campers, one enclosed trailer with a defaced vehicle identification number, twenty-one firearms, ammunition, and a quantity of suspected methamphetamine.

57 year old David Brannon, of Doniphan, was arrested at the scene.

Brannon has been lodged in the Ripley County Jail on charges of receiving stolen property, possession of a controlled substance, and unlawful use of a weapon.

PATTON MAN KILLED IN SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH

A Patton man was killed in a single vehicle crash Wednesday evening.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 60 year old man was driving on Highway A in Wayne County when he failed to negotiate a curve, ran off the roadway, and overturned.

Officials say the crash occurred at around 5:30 pm, four miles north of Williamsville.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by the Wayne County Coroner.

CRASH CLAIMS THREE LIVES IN CLAY COUNTY

A single vehicle crash that killed multiple people is under investigation in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Arkansas State Police, at around 10:30 pm Wednesday, Troopers responded to a report of a one-vehicle wreck on State Highway 211, north of Success.

At the scene, troopers discovered that a vehicle had veered off the roadway, entered a ditch, struck a tree, and caught fire.

The driver, 19 year old Izabella Brasfield, of Marmaduke, as well as passengers 45 year old Michelle Braman and 19 year old Tara Calhoun, both of Corning, were pronounced dead at the scene.

EARLY ANTLERLESS PORTION OF FIREARMS DEER SEASON SET FOR THIS WEEKEND

The early antlerless portion of firearms deer season is set for this weekend.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, the segment is scheduled for today through Sunday, from one half hour before sunrise to one half hour after sunset each day.

There are numerous counties in Southeast Missouri which will not be included in the early or late antlerless portions including Butler, Carter, Dunklin, Iron, Mississippi, New Madrid, Pemiscot, Scott, Stoddard, and Wayne Counties.

The late antlerless portion of firearms deer season will be held between December 6th and December 14th.

FUNERAL SET FOR THIS WEEKEND FOR SIKESTON OFFICER KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY

A funeral will be held this weekend for a Sikeston Police Officer who was killed in the line of duty earlier this week.

According to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, services will be held on Saturday for Public Safety Officer Henry Franklin.

Officials say that any citizens wishing to show their support for Officer Franklin’s family and the Sikeston Department of Public Safety should stage along East Malone Avenue Saturday afternoon.

Full law enforcement honors will follow the service.

A Community Candlelight Vigil is scheduled for 7 pm Friday night outside of the Sikeston Department of Public Safety building.

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO DRUG ARREST IN STODDARD COUNTY

A man was taken into custody on multiple drug charges earlier this week in Stoddard County.

According to court documents, late Monday night a Stoddard County Deputy Sheriff conducted a traffic stop on Highway 60 for littering.

During the stop, the deputy located a can containing a black bag with a glass pipe, along with three plastic baggies which tested positive for methamphetamine.

According to Missouri Case Net, 26 year old Michael Grissom the 2nd, of East Prairie, was arrested on felony charges of delivery of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance along with a misdemeanor charge of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was held in the Stoddard County Jail on a $50,000 cash or surety bond.

MULTIPLE NORTHEAST ARKANSAS COMMUNITIES CHOSEN FOR GRANT FUNDING

The Arkansas Department of Transportation has announced the award recipients for the 2025 Transportation Alternatives Program and Recreational Trails Program.

The TAP provides funding for programs and projects defined as “transportation alternatives” for pedestrians, bicyclists and other non-motorized forms of transportation.

In Northeast Arkansas, Paragould will get $500,000 for the 8-Mile Creek Trail project. Pocahontas was awarded $497,000 for the Black River Overlook Park Connector project.

A total of over $20 million dollars was split between 67 projects across Arkansas.

MENARDS HOSTING FOOD DRIVE TO BENEFIT LOCAL FOOD PANTRY

A Poplar Bluff area business is accepting food donations to be used in the community.

The Poplar Bluff Menards is partnering with area food pantries by serving as a drop off location for donations through the end of this month.

Menards also offers a wide variety of non-perishable food items that can be donated immediately in their grocery department, such as boxes of cereal and cans of soup.

2025 POPLAR BLUFF MASONIC YOUTH FATHER DAUGHTER BALL COMING THIS MONTH

An annual charity event has been scheduled for this month.

The 2025 Poplar Bluff Masonic Youth Father Daughter Ball will be held from 4:30 to 10 pm on Saturday, October 18th at the Black River Coliseum.

SIKESTON OFFICER KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY

A 41 year old Sikeston Police officer was killed in the line of duty on Monday.

According to a preliminary report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Sikeston Department of Public Safety's Special Weapons and Tactics Team were requested to assist the Mississippi County Sheriff's Office with locating and apprehending 36 year old Nathan Peters, of Sikeston, in connection to a homicide investigation that occurred earlier in the day.

Members of the Sikeston DPS SWAT arrived at a residence in Mississippi County and attempted to contact Peters. While Sikeston DPS SWAT members were positioned outside the residence, Peters shot at them, striking a Sikeston DPS Officer.

Officials say that Officer Henry Franklin died as a result of injuries sustained in the incident.

A SWAT team later entered the residence and located Peters deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Franklin had served the Sikeston DPS since June 2013. He served as the handler for K9 Odin and had previously served in the Army National Guard.

Sikeston Mayor Greg Turnbow has ordered that flags in Sikeston fly at half-staff through the end of the day of the funeral.

NEELYVILLE MAN WINS MULTIPLE GOLD MEDALS AT PAN AMERICAN FIELD ARCHERY CHAMPIONSHIP

A Neelyville man won multiple gold medals at an international archery competition last week.

According to USA Archery, Joshua Miller took home an individual Gold Medal Saturday in the men’s longbow competition at the 2025 Pan American Field Archery Championships in San Cristobal, Mexico.

Miller’s second gold medal came in the Longbow mixed team competition, which he shared with Joella Bates.

Miller has been an archer for the past eight years and he says with three kids and a wife, that he’s ready to focus on them for the future.

Parade lights will be shining bright in Downtown Poplar Bluff this December for the 2025 River Radio Lighted Christmas Parade.

Entries are now being accepted for the parade, which is scheduled for 6 pm on Friday, December 5th. Entry forms are available at River Radio in Poplar Bluff. The deadline for entries is November 26th.

The parade route this year will run from Highway 142 at McDonalds through downtown Poplar Bluff before looping back and ending at the Black River Coliseum.

ARKANSAS POLICE PARTICIPATING IN EXTREME SAFETY CAMPAIGN THIS MONTH TO IMPROVE PEDESTRIAN AND BIKE SAFETY

Arkansas Police are participating in an “Extreme Safety” campaign this month to enhance pedestrian and bike safety across state roadways.

According to the Arkansas State Police, the campaign will run through October 18 and aligns with National Pedestrian Safety Month.

The “Extreme Safety” campaign will focus on critical safety tips for motorists and vulnerable road users. For motorists, the campaign highlights the importance of avoiding distractions, adhering to speed limits and being particularly cautious at crosswalks.

Cyclists are urged to wear helmets, check their brakes and follow road rules, while pedestrians are reminded to use sidewalks, cross at designated areas and remain vigilant of their surroundings.

According to recent data, pedestrian fatalities in Arkansas reached a 10-year high in 2020, with 81 deaths.

US HIGHWAY 60 TRAFFIC TO BE DIVERTED IN THE MINER AREA

Construction of the Route AA bridge over U.S. Route 60 at Miner, Missouri is set to begin this month.

Demolition of the existing overpass will take place nightly from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., through Saturday and from October 14th through the 18th, weather permitting.

Eastbound U.S. 60 traffic will be detoured the first week of demolition, with impacts to westbound U.S. 60 occurring the following week.

During demolition, U.S. 60 traffic will be detoured to utilize Route 62 between the U.S. 60/Route 61 and U.S. 60/I-55 interchanges. The detours will be signed and only activated during the overnight hours.

Construction of the new overpass will begin Thursday, Oct. 23, with completion anticipated July 31, 2026, weather permitting.

The Route AA bridge has been closed since December 2024 due to damage sustained by an over-height vehicle.

TWO ARRESTS MADE IN CONNECTION TO SHOOTING IN POPLAR BLUFF

Two people have been taken into custody in connection to a shooting incident in Poplar Bluff.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, on Saturday, Lamar Brown Jr. was taken into custody without incident at an area motel. Brown had an active arrest warrant for assault 1st degree with a bond amount of $100,000 stemming from the incident at Mike’s Resale on September 30th , 2025.

The other person involved in the shooting, 61 year old James Taylor, was arrested at his residence on Thursday after being released from a Memphis hospital.

Taylor is being held in the Butler County Justice Center on a probation and parole revocation warrant for 1st degree assault with no bond. Multiple firearms including the one believed to be used in the assault were located during the execution of a search warrant of Taylor’s residence.

ARKANSAS HIGHWAY CLOSED AFTER INSPECTION REVEALS ISSUES WITH BRIDGE

A highway in Northeast Arkansas has been closed after a bridge inspection.

According to I Drive Arkansas, a routine bridge inspection revealed issues with a bridge on Highway 141 in Clay County.

The bridge is located south of the Highway 141 intersection with Highway 90.

No information was released on when the highway would reopen.

STATE OFFICIALS STRESS SAFETY FOR NON-HUNTERS DURING HUNTING SEASON

Fall firearm Turkey hunting is underway in Missouri and with deer season also starting soon, state officials are reminding non-hunters that they also need to practice safety measures when afield.

Officials say that non-hunters should wear bright clothing to be more visible, such as a bright orange hat, jacket, or pack.

Place a bright orange vest or bandana on canines who join you and remember to keep them leashed. Be aware that hunters are often most active during the early morning and late afternoon, when game animals are most active. Be especially aware of your own visibility during these times when light is dim.

Stay on designated trails. Trails are designed to improve the safety of public users and to protect sensitive habitats. Enjoying recreational activities only on designated trails will reduce the likelihood of entering hunting areas.

If you hear shooting, raise your voice, and let hunters know you are in the area.

This is also the time to be extra cautious and watching for deer while driving.

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR THE POPLAR BLUFF ADULT WOMEN AND COED VOLLEYBALL

FLOOD INUNDATION MAPPING TOOL AVAILABLE FOR COMMUNITIES ALONG CURRENT RIVER

Residents along the Current River have a new tool to help plan for flooding possibilities.

The Ozark Foothills Regional Planning Commission has announced the public launch of a new, high-tech Flood Inundation Mapping tool.

The tool is now publicly available on the USGS website. The interactive maps allow users to select a river gauge and view the corresponding flooded areas, helping with everything from pre-disaster planning to real-time emergency response.

Officials say the tool is designed to empower community leaders, emergency management officials, and the general public by offering detailed, predictive maps of flood extents based on various water levels.

The resource was developed in partnership with the South Central Ozark Council of Governments, the U.S. Geological Survey, and funded through a Community Development Block Grant.

STODDARD COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR CULVERT REPLACEMENT

Route C in Stoddard County will be closed today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace a culvert under the roadway.

The section of roadway being closed is located from Route BB to County Road 211 near Advance.

WREN COTRELL ELECTED 2025 HOMECOMING QUEEN FOR POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL

Wren Cotrell has been elected as the new Poplar Bluff Homecoming Queen.

Cotrell was announced as the 2025 Poplar Bluff Homecoming Queen Friday night before the Mules football team took the field to challenge the Sikeston Bulldogs.

She was escorted Friday night by Henry Deken

Retiring Poplar Bluff Homecoming Queen Ashton Mays was at the ceremony to pass the crown on to her successor.

The four other members of the 2025 Poplar Bluff Homecoming Court were Maryn Massey, who was escorted by JR Lathon, Addison Valenzuela, who was escorted by Andre Aguilar, Ryhan Waddell, who was escorted by Alex Larkins, and Elleanna Wiseman, who was escorted by Patrick Slack.

Updating a story we have been following for you, one person was killed, and another injured, in a three vehicle crash Thursday afternoon in Southern Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a vehicle crossed the center line of US Highway 67, two miles north of the Missouri/Arkansas border, and struck two vehicles.

The driver of the second vehicle that was hit, identified as 42 year old Jose Luis Maldonado Ramirez, from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the first vehicle, a 59 year old female from Martinsville, Indiana, was flown to a Memphis hospital with moderate injuries.

No injuries were listed for the driver of the first vehicle that was hit.

THREE PEOPLE DEAD FROM SEPARATE WEEKEND CRASHES IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

It was a deadly weekend for motorists in Southeast Missouri.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported three separate fatal crashes on Saturday.

The first occurred shortly after 3 pm, when a 55 year old Piedmont man was killed when his car overturned in Reynolds County.

The second happened at around 5 pm on Interstate 55 in New Madrid County where a vehicle ran off the roadway, struck a cable barrier and overturned. A 35 year old male passenger from Memphis, Tennessee was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others were injured.

The third was reported at approximately 8:30 pm, when the UTV of a 26 year old Bloomfield man overturned near Aquilla in Stoddard County. The man was taken to an area hospital where he later died.

THIS WEEK IS NATIONAL FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

It's National Fire Prevention Week, and officials are urging residents to develop fire escape routes for their homes and practice at least twice a year.

State officials say that rehearsing an escape can save time and lives because flames and smoke spread quickly.

You should also take steps to keep fires from starting, such as never leaving the kitchen while cooking, replacing damaged electrical cords and blowing out candles when leaving a room.

This year, the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s office is wanting to highlight the dangers of lithium-ion batteries.

Missouri State Fire Marshal Tim Bean tells KWOC News that many people don’t realize it, but virtually every electronic device that is rechargeable uses lithium-ion batteries.

Bean added that it’s essential to use, charge and recycle these batteries safely to prevent fires in the home.

Route Z in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane this week with a 10-foot width restriction so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform pavement repairs. 

The section of Route Z being reduced is located from Route 412 near Hayti to Route 164 near Steele.

HOMECOMING IS TONIGHT FOR POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL

Homecoming is tonight in Poplar Bluff.

The Mules will welcome the Sikeston Bulldogs for the annual homecoming football game at Poplar Bluff High School, with kickoff scheduled for 7 pm.

Before the game, the homecoming court will be presented and the homecoming queen will be crowned.

BONESTOCK RETURNS THIS WEEKEND IN POPLAR BLUFF

A beloved music festival returns this weekend in Poplar Bluff.

The gates will open for Bonestock at 11 am this Saturday at Ray Clinton Park.

11 bands will be performing throughout the day, including Cynderblok, One Way Out, Petalshelf, and Maddy and the Monarchs

Tickets are available for $20 at River Radio in Poplar Bluff. Tickets will also be available for $20 cash at the gate on Saturday.

Part of the proceeds from Bonestock will go to local veterans via the Marine Corps Rose Program, which helps local vets from all military branches and supports youth initiatives.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FACING MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE

A Poplar Bluff man was arrested this week on a manslaughter charge in connection to an incident from last year where a pregnant woman was struck and killed by a vehicle in Butler County.

According to a Probable Cause Affidavit, on the morning of October 29th, 2024, a pregnant woman, later identified as 27 year old Topanga Thompson, of Poplar Bluff, was struck by a vehicle on Route B.

The vehicle, which was driven by 43 year old Chuck Bailey, had appeared to have crossed the centerline, ran off the left side of the roadway, struck the pedestrian, and then hit a tree.

According to Missouri Case Net, a warrant was issued and served this week for Bailey, charging him with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and possession of a controlled substance, as well a single charge of DWI.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FLOWN TO ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL AFTER HIS MOPED HIT AN ANIMAL ON US HIGHWAY 67

A Poplar Bluff man was badly injured Thursday evening in a motor vehicle accident.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 37 year old man was driving a moped on US Highway 67, three miles north of Poplar Bluff, when he struck an animal in the roadway.

The vehicle then overturned, ejecting the driver.

The man suffered serious injuries in the crash and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

ALMOST 10 MILLION DOLLARS IN STATE GRANTS AWARDED TO MISSOURI BLUE SHIELD COMMUNITIES

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has announced that grant money has been awarded to Missouri Blue Shield communities across the state.

According to the Governor’s office, a total of 201 counties, cities, and towns earned the Governor’s Blue Shield designation by creating comprehensive, sustainable plans to fight crime and promote safer communities, making them eligible for grant funding.

Communities that joined the initiative earned up to $50,000 each in funding for equipment, technology, and training grants

Carter County Sheriff Alonzo Bradwell says that his department was chosen for a $50,000 grant to improve many aspects of technology at the Sheriff’s office, such as new in-car radios, portable radios, laptops, and more.

Governor Kehoe says that nearly $10 million dollars in state grants were distributed.

QULIN HOMECOMING SET FOR THIS WEEKEND

The beginning of October marks the return of the Qulin Homecoming.

Organizers say that the event will be held on Saturday at the Qulin Lions Park.

There will also be attractions and vendors available including the photo contest, volleyball tournament, the pumpkin decorating contest, and the Bake wars.

Area pickleball players will be gathering in Poplar Bluff this weekend to help raise money to finish a playground.

The first ever Kiwanis Paddles 4 Playgrounds Pickleball tournament will begin at 8 am on Saturday at the Underwood Pickleball Courts at McLane Park.

There will be men’s and women’s divisions, with entry costing $50 per team.

Proceeds from the event will go to help finish building Robert’s Adventure Playground in Poplar Bluff.

ARSON SUSPECT ARRESTED IN CARTER COUNTY

Officials in Carter County have arrested a man in connection to an arson investigation.

Carter County Sheriff Alonzo Bradwell tells KWOC News that on September 26th, investigators began an investigation into a fire at a building in the Grandin area.

The investigation led to the arrest of Wesley Smith, of Grandin, who has been formally charged with arson in the 1st and 2nd degree.

He is being held in the Carter County Detention Center on no bond.

2025 CLASS OF POPLAR BLUFF SPORTS HALL OF FAME TO BE INDUCTED TONIGHT

Four Poplar Bluff record setters will be joining the Poplar Bluff Sports Hall of Fame tonight.

President of the Sports Hall of Fame Brian Rosener tells KWOC News that Justin Alford, Rena Brown, Stephanie Faith, and Slug Hefner will be inducted into the Hall tonight as the Class of 2025 at the Black River Coliseum.

Roesner added that it was a unique class this year because every person being honored holds a record in their discipline.

Alford is the first soccer player to be honored while Hefner, owner and driver of Dirty Duck Racing, becomes the first person recognized for motorsports. Brown and Faith were both multi-sport athletes that helped the Poplar Bluff girls basketball program reach a final four.

There are currently 100 individuals and 12 teams honored in the Sports Hall of Fame room located in the Poplar Bluff Museum, in the Mark Twain School on Main Street.

This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the Mules becoming the mascot of Poplar Bluff High School when the students chose it to honor their coach.

POPLAR BLUFF REALTOR NAMED MISSOURI REALTORS 2025 REALTOR SALESPERSON OF THE YEAR

A Poplar Bluff based realtor was recently honored at a statewide business conference.

According to a news release, Todd Henson, of PB Realty, has been named Missouri Realtors 2025 Realtor Salesperson of the Year.

Henson was presented the award on September 24 during the Missouri Realtors Fall Business Conference.

The award is given annually based on demonstrated commitment to realtor ethics and cooperation, activity within the local, state, and National Association of Realtors, advanced education and professional designations, community service, and sales volume.

The release says that Henson has been a licensed Realtor for over seven years and has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to the real estate profession through his active involvement at both the state and local levels.

STODDARD COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE WARNING AREA RESIDENTS ABOUT SCAM CALLS

A local Sheriff’s Department is warning area residents to be on the lookout for scam phone calls.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Office, they have been receiving reports of a male claiming to be “Sergeant Matney,” contacting citizens about a confidential legal matter involving federal court.

Officials say that this is a scam, as the Sheriff’s Office will never reach out in this manner regarding legal matters, requesting money, or confidential information.

Anyone who receives a call like this is asked to report it to your local authorities. Do not engage with the caller or provide any personal information.

MISSOURI MAN ACCUSED OF STRIKING A PERSON WITH METAL KNUCKLES

A Missouri man is in custody in Northeast Arkansas after allegedly using a prohibited weapon to attack another person.

According to the Paragould Police Department, on Tuesday, officers responded to a location on North 4th Street where they observed a number of people engaged in a physical altercation.

The defendant, identified as 32 year old Gary Miller III, of Arbyrd, Missouri, reportedly had been involved in a verbal altercation with another subject.

During the altercation, Miller retrieved a pair of metal knuckles from his pocket, chased the individual down the street, and struck the individual in the head multiple times with the metal knuckles.

The victim was transported to a local hospital with a laceration to his head.

Miller was arrested on charges of battery in the second degree and criminal use of prohibited weapons. He was held in the Greene County Jail.

MOTORISTS WARNED TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR DEER

With temperatures starting to drop, Missouri motorists are being advised to watch for deer.

Officials say that deer are more active and create hazards for Missouri motorists at this time of year.

The majority of deer strike crashes occur in October and November each year, with most happening in the 6 to 7 am and 6 to 9 pm timeframes.

Last year, drivers in Missouri experienced 2,952 traffic crashes where deer-vehicle strikes occurred. In these crashes, there were four fatalities and 420 people were injured.

Drivers are reminded that an attempt to avoid striking a deer could result in a more serious crash involving oncoming traffic. As soon as you see a deer, the best course of action is to reduce your speed gradually while watching other traffic around you.

If you do strike a deer, move your vehicle to a safe location and call 9-1-1 or *55 on a cell phone and report it.

SUSPECT SOUGHT IN POPLAR BLUFF SHOOTING

Poplar Bluff Police are searching for a suspect following a shooting early Tuesday morning.

Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whiteley tells KWOC News that the incident happened around 2:28 am Tuesday morning in the 1000 Block of East Harper Street.

One man was airlifted to a Memphis hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are searching for a suspect, identified as 34-year-old Lamar Cashawn Brown Jr., in connection to the shooting.

DEXTER MAN ACCUSED OF SEXUAL ABUSE

A Dexter man has been taken into custody after being accused of sexual abuse.

According to the Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, 41 year old Brett Mattison was charged in two cases that were filed this week, alleging numerous sexual offenses perpetrated against two minor children, which are alleged to have occurred in 2019 and 2025.

Warrants have been issued for Mattison, charging him with rape, two counts of sexual abuse, two counts of child molestation, and two counts of sodomy or attempted sodomy, among other charges.

Mattison remains in custody in the Stoddard County Jail on no bond.

BLOOMFIELD HOUSING AUTHORITY SUED BY JUSTICE DEPARTMENT FOR SEXUAL HARASSMENT

A Southeast Missouri housing authority is being sued by the United States Justice Department.

According to a news release, the Justice Department announced Tuesday that it filed a lawsuit against Eddie Joe Hankins and the Housing Authority of the City of Bloomfield for sexually harassing a female housing applicant in violation of the Fair Housing Act.

Hankins was the executive director of the Missouri Housing Authority from 2019 through 2022.

The lawsuit alleges that in 2021, a woman living with her three children applied for public housing. After her application was denied, the complaint alleges that she went to meet with Executive Director Hankins, who made unwanted sexual advances toward her.

The suit also alleges that Hankins made sexual comments about the applicant’s appearance, conditioned housing for her family upon submission to his conduct, and that he refused to assist her with obtaining housing once she resisted his sexual advances.

The lawsuit also alleges that the Housing Authority is vicariously liable for Hankins’ unlawful conduct. The lawsuit seeks monetary damages to compensate the applicant harmed by the alleged harassment and a court order barring future discrimination.

PATRONS OF THE ARTS TO PRESENT SPIRIT OF SCOTLAND AT THREE RIVERS COLLEGE

Southeast Missouri residents will get to experience the true spirit of Scotland with soaring songs, live music, and champion Highland dancers at a special performance this month in Poplar Bluff.

Three Rivers College Patrons of the Arts will present "Spirit of Scotland" at 7 p.m. on October 23, at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.

Organizers say that the show features a unique blend of music, song, and dance.

MISSOURI GOVERNOR MIKE KEHOE AUTHORIZES MISSOURI NATIONAL GUARD TO SUPPORT ICE

The Missouri National Guard will be able to help Immigration and Customs Enforcement forces within the state according to a new order from the Governor.

On Tuesday, Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe announced that he had authorized the Missouri National Guard to assist with administrative, clerical, and logistical duties at ICE processing facilities within the state.

Kehoe said that the decision comes in response to a request for assistance from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to the Department of War to ensure the resources and personnel needed to effectively enforce immigration laws and maintain operational control of the border.

Missouri National Guard service members will provide support starting today, enabling ICE personnel to focus on core enforcement and security functions. National Guard personnel who have been assigned to this mission were selected on a volunteer basis.

Military personnel are authorized to be on duty for this mission through September 30, 2026.

MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION REMINDS MISSOURIANS TO WATCH FOR BEARS

With Fall underway, the Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding residents to be on the lookout for black bears.

According to MDC officials, Missouri is home to an estimated over 1,000 black bears with most being in the southern part of the state. During the fall, bears are focused on fattening up and can spend up to 20 hours a day foraging for food. This can lead to conflicts between bears and people, pets, and property.

MDC Furbear Biologist Nate Bowersock said it is important that people remove or secure bear attractants from their property, such as bird feeders, trash, barbeque grills, pet food, and food waste.

He noted that intentionally feeding bears can be dangerous as it makes the bears comfortable around people. It can also lead bears to cause significant damage to property while searching for food.

INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY AFTER WOMAN SUFFERS GUNSHOT WOUND IN RIPLEY COUNTY

An investigation is underway after a woman suffered a gunshot wound over the weekend.

According to the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, an adult female was transported by personal vehicle Saturday morning to a Poplar Bluff hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound.

The victim was treated at the hospital for non life threatening injuries.

The victim said she was alone in the driveway of her residence on Ripley 142E-24 when she heard two shots from a wooded area up the hill from her property.

She said that one of the rounds struck her lower thigh.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

MAN ARRESTED ON RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT CHARGES IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A man was taken into custody last week in Northeast Arkansas on rape and sexual assault charges.

According to a warrant affidavit, 54 year old Jackie Allred, of Pocahontas, is accused of having inappropriate contact with a juvenile earlier this year.

The affidavit says that additional victims were also identified during the investigation.

Allred has been charged with felony rape, sexual indecency with a child, and sexual assault in the 1st degree.

He is being held in the Randolph County Dentition Center on no bond.

FALL BUFF UP THE BLUFF COMING ON OCTOBER 11TH

The 2025 Fall Buff up the Bluff event is set for next month.

The citywide clean up event has been scheduled for Saturday, October 11th.

Henson’s Transfer Station on the Industrial Park Bypass will be accepting items during the event.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MOSTLY UNAFFECTED BY NEW MISSOURI CONGRESSIONAL MAP

Southeast Missouri is mostly unaffected by new congressional maps passed over the weekend.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe signed a new congressional map into law on Sunday that gives Republicans an improved shot at winning an additional U.S. House seat.

The mid-decade redistricting is part of President Donald Trump’s plan to try to hold on to Republicans’ slim majority in next year’s congressional elections. The revised map targets a district represented by Democratic Representative Emanuel Cleaver by splitting off segments and stretching the remainder of the district into Republican-heavy rural areas.

District 8, which covers most of Southeast and South Central Missouri, and is represented by Jason Smith in the US House, was untouched in the new map.

Opponents are leading a referendum petition to try to force a statewide vote on the new map. Republicans currently hold six of Missouri’s eight U.S. House seats.

U.S. House districts were redrawn across the country after the 2020 census to account for population changes. But Missouri is the third state this year to try to redraw its districts for partisan advantage, a process known as gerrymandering.

DEER MANAGEMENT OPEN HOUSE SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 14TH IN POPLAR BLUFF

Officials with the Missouri Department of Conservation are inviting deer hunters, landowners and managers, wildlife watchers, and others interested in Missouri’s white-tailed deer to an open house next month in Poplar Bluff.

The event has been scheduled for 4 to 8 pm on Tuesday, October 14th at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center in Poplar Bluff. No registration is required.

Attendees can talk with MDC staff about deer management and regulations, impacts of chronic wasting disease and epizootic hemorrhagic disease on deer populations, managing private land for deer, and MDC’s Deer Management Assistance Program.

In addition, MDC staff will share new information on CWD and how MDC is working with hunters, landowners, and other partners to minimize the threat of CWD and keep Missouri deer healthy.

BRIDGE REPAIRS TO FORCE CLOSURE OF STODDARD COUNTY ROAD THIS WEEK

Route F in Stoddard County will be closed this week as contractor crews perform bridge repairs.

The closure will be located between County Road 420 and Route J.

MAN ARRESTED ON RAPE AND SODOMY RELATED WARRANT IN RIPLEY COUNTY

A man was arrested in Ripley County late Thursday night on a rape and sodomy related warrant.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 38 year old Kenneth Paul, of Brunswick, Missouri, was taken into custody on a warrant out of Chariton County for six counts of 1st degree rape or attempted rape, two counts of 1st degree sodomy or attempted sodomy, two counts of 4th degree child molestation, and a single count of 3rd degree assault.

Following the arrest, Paul was held on no bond.

2025 POPLAR BLUFF WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S COMING ON SATURDAY

Preparations are underway for an annual event in Poplar Bluff to help fight Alzheimer’s disease.

The 2025 Poplar Bluff Walk to End Alzheimer’s will begin at 10 am on Saturday, October 4th at the Poplar Bluff High School track on Oak Grove Road.

Registration will begin at 9 am that morning and you can also register online at alz.org/PoplarBluff.

All funds raised through the Walk to End Alzheimer's furthers the care, support, and research efforts of the nonprofit Alzheimer's Association.

The Butler County 4-H Shooting Sports Club will be hosting a competition fundraiser in early October.

The Crazy Quail Team Raffle Shoot has been scheduled for 8 am on October 4th at the Black River Ranch on Honeysuckle Lane in Poplar Bluff.

Registration will begin at 7:30 am and is $100 per two man team.

Proceeds from the event will go towards the 4-H trip to Washington D.C.

DONATION OF OVER $30,000 OF CLASSROOM MATERIALS MADE TO POPLAR BLUFF KINDERGARTEN CENTER

A Kansas based company donated over $30,000 worth of classroom materials to aid in tornado recovery efforts at the Poplar Bluff Kindergarten Center.

Poplar Bluff school officials tell KWOC News that Pitsco Education, based in Pittsburg, Kansas, hand-delivered several pallets’ worth of STEM kits, sensory activity learning products and furniture last month to help get the school year started.

Craig Yantis, Pitsco chief operating officer, graduated from the Poplar Bluff High School Class of 1988, and explained how he keeps up with the news from his birthplace, where his family still resides.

When he learned about the damage sustained at the Kindergarten Center on March 14, he reached out to emergency officials, who in turn connected him with his former classmate Patty Robertson, now retired as R-I assistant superintendent of curriculum.

RECTOR MAN ARRESTED FOR FURNISHING ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES TO MINORS

A Northeast Arkansas man is in custody following an investigation into illegal substances.

Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole tells KWOC News that the Clay County Sheriff’s Department and Rector Police Department have been jointly conducting an investigation on an individual furnishing illegal substances to minors in and around Rector since July 2025.

Officers uncovered that the individual had been furnishing alcohol, nicotine, CBD, THC vapes and marijuana to minors.

According to Cole, the investigation led to the arrest of 35 year old Patrick Scott, of Rector, on Wednesday.

Cole says that Scott was booked on felony charges of knowingly furnishing or selling to a minor and delivery of a schedule six controlled substance, among other charges.

FREE MEDICAL CLINIC TO BE OFFERED IN POPLAR BLUFF

A free medical clinic will be offered in Poplar Bluff next month.

Footsteps Medical Missions will be presenting the clinic from 8 am to 3 pm on Saturday, October 11th at the Memorial Broadway Church on South Broadway Street.

Services provided will include general medical screenings, diabetic foot and wound care, hearing exams, and more.

FIELDS OF FAITH SET FOR THIS SUNDAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

The next FCA Fields of Faith event in Poplar Bluff is this weekend.

Officials with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes tell KWOC News that the event will be held on Sunday at Poplar Bluff High School.

The event is scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm.

DEXTER CEMETERY ANNUAL FALL FLOWER REMOVAL SET FOR OCTOBER 1ST

Dexter residents are being reminded to remove their flowers from the Dexter Cemetery by the end of the month.

City officials say that in preparation for fall, the Dexter Street Department will begin their annual Fall Flower Removal at the cemetery beginning on October 1st.

Anyone who does not want their flowers to be discarded should have them removed by that date.

MOTORISTS AND FARMERS URGED TO STAY ALERT ON ROADWAYS

Many area farmers will soon be starting or are already in the process of harvesting their crops and the Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding motorists to be prepared for heavier farm machinery traffic, especially on rural highways.

When you come up behind a tractor or other farm machinery, remember to slow down and be patient. Wait to pass until you have a clear view of the road ahead and there is no oncoming traffic. Never pass on a hill or curve.

Officials say that collisions commonly occur when a motorist tries to pass a left-turning farm vehicle. A tractor that appears to be pulling to the right side of the road to let motorists pass, instead may be preparing to make a wide left turn.

Be sure to watch the farmer’s hand and light signals closely.
