STATE OFFICIALS WARNING OF SCAM PHONE CALLS TARGETING ELDERLY CITIZENS

State officials are warning of scam phone calls that have been reportedly targeting elderly and vulnerable citizens.

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt tells KWOC News that the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri has reported hundreds of calls from citizens across Missouri who claim to have received calls from the court’s number asking for money.

The caller sounds like a child, pretending to be a grandchild of the recipient and says they are currently being held in jail. The scammer goes on to say that in order to get out of jail, they need money. Schmitt says that this is known as a grandparent scam and it primarily targets the elderly.

Scammers have made the number look like it is coming from “US Government” or even “US District Court” lending credibility to the caller’s claims.

If you get a call or email from someone claiming to know you and asking for help, check to confirm that it’s legitimate before you send any money. Try to contact the person who they claim to be directly.

If you can’t reach the person, contact someone else – a friend or relative of the person. Don’t send money unless you are absolutely sure it is the real person you know.

* Persons less than 18 years of age operating or riding in trucks (regardless of gross weight for which licensed) must wear seat belts.

*No person under age 18 is allowed to ride in the unenclosed bed of a truck with a licensed gross weight of less than 12,000 pounds on lettered highways, federal, state maintained highways, and within city limits. There are exemptions for agricultural purposes, special events, and parades.
