POPLAR BLUFF POLICE TRYING TO LOCATE MAN WHO ESCAPED FROM CUSTODY

Authorities in Poplar Bluff are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a man who was arrested and then escaped earlier this week.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, a reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of Colton Howell.

Anyone who has information on Howell’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Poplar Bluff Police Department at 573-785-5776.


POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL CHOSEN AS NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL

A Poplar Bluff school has been named a 2019 National Blue Ribbon School.

Poplar Bluff School District officials tell KWOC News that U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced Thursday that Oak Grove Elementary earned the honor for its leading academic performance measured by state assessments.

The Blue Ribbon is the highest honor achievable for an educational institution in America and a total of only 362 public and private schools across the nation received the award this year. Only eight of the schools were in Missouri.

This is the second consecutive year that a school in the Poplar Bluff School District was named a Blue Ribbon School. Last year, Lake Road Elementary became the first school in Poplar Bluff history to receive the award.


BEACHES TO CLOSE AFTER THIS WEEKEND AT WAPPAPELLO LAKE

Closing dates have been set for many beaches and campgrounds at Wappapello Lake.

According to the United States Army Corps of Engineers, all beaches at Wappapello Lake will close on September 30th as will the People’s Creek Lower Campground.

Officials say that Redman Creek Campground will close on November 4th, followed by the Greenville Campground, which closes on November 26th.

There will still be opportunities for camping this Winter, as the People's Creek Upper Campground, Snow Creek Campground, and Island Campsites are open all year.


FRIDAY AT THE BUTLER COUNTY FAIR

The annual Beauty Pageant is one of the headline events for tonight at the Butler County Fair.

Registration will begin at 5:30 pm this evening for the Little Miss and Mister Butler County Fair pageant at the Holiday Inn in Poplar Bluff.

The Ag Olympics will be kicking off at 6 pm tonight at the Fair, followed by the Truck and Tractor Pull at 7 pm.

BROSELEY MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON FELONY DRUG CHARGE

Authorities in Butler County have arrested an area man on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 54 year old Melvin Sandlin, of Broseley, was taken into custody Thursday morning on a felony charge of possession of methamphetamine.

Following the arrest, Sandlin was held at the Butler County Jail.


TWO EARTHQUAKES SHAKE PARTS OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Did you feel the either of the earthquakes that shook parts of Southeast Missouri overnight?

According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 2.8 quake was recorded shortly after 11:30 pm. The earthquake was centered almost 20 miles southeast of Sikeston and had a depth of just over nine miles.

A second earthquake followed early this morning at around 3:47 am.

That earthquake had a magnitude of 3.1 and was recorded 2.7 miles southwest of Lilbourn.
