SUBJECT FLOWN TO ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL FOLLOWING CRASH IN POPLAR BLUFF

At least one person was injured in a crash Wednesday night in Poplar Bluff.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, the crash involved multiple vehicles at the intersection of Business Highway 67 and Sunset Drive.

Few details have been released but officials say that a passenger in one of the vehicles was flown to a St. Louis hospital for treatment.

DEADLINE COMING TO REMOVE ITEMS BEFORE ANNUAL POPLAR BLUFF CITY CEMETERY CLEAN UP

Poplar Bluff residents are running out of time to remove objects they want to keep before the annual city cemetery clean up.

The Poplar Bluff Cemetery Department will be cleaning both the City and Woodlawn Cemetery’s beginning on March 2nd, with the project anticipated to be completed by March 30th.

Everyone is asked to remove any flower arrangements, personal items, and decorations that you would like to keep before March 2nd.

ONE FLOWN FROM SCENE OF SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH NEAR BLOOMFIELD

One person was flown from the scene of a single vehicle crash Thursday morning near Bloomfield.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 57 year old Sikeston man was driving on Stoddard County Road 524 when his vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway and overturned.

The crash occurred at around 10:40 am.

The driver suffered serious injuries in the crash and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

MINGO JOB CORPS TO HOST COMMUNITY MEETING NEXT WEEK

Anyone wanting to learn more about the Mingo Job Corps will have the opportunity to attend an event next week.

The Mingo Job Corps quarterly Community Relations Council meeting will be held at noon on Thursday, March 5th at the Mingo Job Corps Center outside of Puxico.

MARCH 1ST IS DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM AT THREE RIVERS

The deadline is approaching for anyone who wants to apply for the surgical technology program at Three Rivers College.

Officials say that the application deadline is March 1st for the program, which is designed to prepare students to become an entry-level Surgical Technologist.

Both general education and surgical technology courses are included and clinical laboratory experiences are planned in local healthcare facilities under the direct guidance of the Surgical Technology faculty

Applicants for the Surgical Technology program must have a minimum 2.0 GPA and a TEAS entrance exam score of 50% or higher.

Additionally prospective students must also complete a free Three Rivers application and submit official copies of transcripts from high school and other colleges to the Registrar’s office by the March 1 deadline.

PUXICO INDIANS TO START DISTRICT TOURNAMENT TONIGHT

The Puxico Indians will start their campaign for a 3rd straight district championship as well as a return to the state final four tonight.

The top seed Indians will face the five seed Advance Hornets at 5:30 pm this evening in the Class 2, District 3 semifinals.

With a win tonight, the Indians will advance to the District Championship game at noon on Saturday against either Bernie or Charleston.

MISSING FREDERICKTOWN TEEN FOUND SAFE

A teenager who was reported missing earlier this week out of Fredericktown has been found safe.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, an endangered person advisory was issued Sunday evening for 16 year old Lilly Watkins.

Officials say that the advisory was cancelled Wednesday after Watkins was found safe on Tuesday. No other details have been released.

HUNTERS AND ANGLERS REMINDED THAT ANNUAL PERMITS EXPIRE AT THE END OF THE MONTH

Missouri annual permits for various game and fish will expire at the end of the month.

The Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding Missouri hunters and anglers that related annual permits expire at the end of February, including 2025 permits for small game, fishing, trout fishing, and combination hunting and fishing.

Anyone wanting to purchase a permit can do so at vendors around the state, online at mdc.mo.gov/BuyPermits, or through MDC’s free mobile apps, MO Hunting and MO fishing.

Commercial and lifetime permits can be purchased only through the MDC Permit Services Unit by calling 573-522-0107 for an application.

MAN ARRESTED ON SEXUAL INDECENCY WITH A CHILD CHARGE

Authorities in Northeast Arkansas have arrested a Paragould man following a disclosure of sexual abuse that was submitted to the Arkansas Child Abuse Hotline.

According to a warrant affidavit, 48 year old Walson Jekkar is accused of having inappropriate contact with a juvenile.

Jekkar was booked into the Greene County Jail on Tuesday on three counts of sexual indecency with a child.

He is being held on a $250,000 bond.

DEXTER CEMETERY ANNUAL SPRING FLOWER REMOVAL SET FOR MARCH 1ST

Dexter residents are being reminded to remove flowers from the Dexter Cemetery by the end of the month.

City officials say that in preparation for spring, the Dexter Street Department will begin their annual Spring Flower Removal at the cemetery beginning on March 1st.

Anyone who does not want their flowers to be discarded should have them removed by that date.

WAITLIST TO BE IMPLEMENTED FOR MISSOURI CHILD CARE SUBSIDY PROGRAM

State officials say that a waitlist will be in place soon for new families seeking child care assistance.

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Office of Childhood has announced that it will implement a waitlist for Missouri’s Child Care Subsidy Program beginning March 1st, due to the increased growth of families who qualify.

Officials say that the waitlist will be for families that are newly applying for the program and those who were approved before March 1st will not be affected.

Families who complete renewals on time will continue receiving assistance without interruption and the waitlist will be managed in order of application submission date, in accordance with priority rankings.

Officials say that the number of families receiving child care assistance has increased by 19 percent since January 2025, with more than 27,000 children currently served statewide.

BODY OF MISSING NEW MADRID COUNTY MAN FOUND IN MISSISSIPPI RIVER

The body of a missing New Madrid County man was found Tuesday morning.

According to New Madrid County Sheriff Joey Higgerson, the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Office was notified by the United States Coast Guard on Tuesday of a possible human body in the Mississippi River near Caruthersville.

A commercial boat on the river initially located the body.

Higgerson says that an autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday to help determine the cause and manner of death.

MAN REPORTEDLY SCAMMED OUT OF $40,000 IN RIPLEY COUNTY

Ripley County Sheriff Rad Talburt is reporting that an area resident was reportedly scammed out of $40,000.

On Monday, the victim reported that he received an email for approval of a charge.

When the victim called the number in the email he was transferred to someone who identified themself as an investigator with the DEA. This person told the victim that a federal warrant was issued for his arrest, and they instructed him to gather $40,000 to prove his innocence.

Someone then came to the victim’s residence and the victim gave them the cash.

Sheriff Talburt is reminding the public that law enforcement agencies will never solicit payment of fines or bonds with cash, cash apps, or wire transfers.

If someone posing as law enforcement contacts you or a loved one and threatens arrest unless you send money, immediately hang up and contact your local law enforcement agency.

DAY OF REMEMBRANCE SET TO COMMEMORATE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF DEADLY POPLAR BLUFF TORNADO

The Poplar Bluff community will be coming together on March 14th to commemorate one year since a deadly tornado struck the city.

An event has been scheduled for 11:27 am on March 14th at New Covenant Fellowship Church in Poplar Bluff for 20 minutes of prayer and remembrance.

The church was in the direct path of the EF-3 tornado and sustained significant damage.

That same day, the American Red Cross will be hosting Disaster Action Team Training from 9 am to 2 pm at the Church. Participants will get to take part in the remembrance gathering.

FILING UNDERWAY FOR MISSOURI PRIMARY ELECTION

Filing is underway for candidates who want to run in this year’s Missouri Primary Election.

Missouri’s primary date has been set for August 4th when candidates will be decided for Missouri’s Congressmen in the United States House of Representatives as well as for Missouri State Auditor, among other races.

We are one week away from Missouri’s Annual Statewide Tornado Drill.

Missouri will be holding its annual statewide tornado drill at 11 am on Wednesday, March 4th.

Officials say that residents should treat the drill as if it were an actual Tornado Warning. The purpose of the drill is to test everyone's readiness for life-threatening severe weather events such as tornadoes, flash floods, and damaging winds.

It is important to have a tornado safety plan in place before a tornado strikes. Knowing what to do before a tornado occurs is essential to protect lives.

Officials say that the application deadlines are March 1st for the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing Program and the RN Bridge Program.

The two-year AAS in Nursing program is designed to prepare students to apply for licensure by examination as a registered nurse.

Three Rivers’ RN Bridge program is a career-enhancement program designed to allow Missouri LPNs and Licensed Paramedics to earn an associate degree and prepare to apply for licensure by examination as a registered nurse.

Students must complete an application and meet certain criteria to be admitted into Three Rivers’ nursing programs.

A Poplar Bluff man is facing multiple child pornography related charges.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Brett Payne is accused of sending sexually explicit content involving juveniles that was created with AI over a messaging account.

Payne has been charged with two counts of promoting child pornography - 1st degree and a single count of promoting child pornography - 2nd degree.

He was held in the Butler County Justice Center on a $150,000 bond.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON WEAPON AND ASSAULT CHARGES

A Poplar Bluff man was arrested over the weekend on weapon and assault charges.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, 49 year old James Bradley was taken into custody Saturday on felony charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon, domestic assault - 4th degree, and two counts of armed criminal action.

Few details about the incident have been released, but the charges stem from an incident on Saturday.

Bradley was held in the Butler County Justice Center on a $50,000 bond.

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK BY VEHICLE IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle Sunday evening in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Paragould Police Department, shortly before 7:30 pm, Paragould Emergency Services received multiple phone calls of a vehicle versus pedestrian accident on Highway 49 North.

According to witnesses, the pedestrian, whose name was not released, attempted to cross the road when he was struck by a vehicle. EMS transported the pedestrian to an area airport so he could be flown to a hospital.

No other injuries have been reported.

ROUTE W TO BE CLOSED TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY

Missouri Department of Transportation crews will be closing Route W in Butler County today in order to replace a culvert under the roadway.

Officials say that Route W will be closed through 3 pm this afternoon for the project.

The work zone will be located between Route KK and County Road 508.

MODOT CREWS TO CLOSE ROUTE U IN STODDARD COUNTY THIS WEEK

Route U in Stoddard County will be closed beginning today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace several culverts under the roadway.

The section of roadway being closed is located from Route H to County Road 661.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily through Thursday. While work is underway, this road will be open to local traffic only.

POPLAR BLUFF DIVER FINISHES IN 10TH PLACE AT STATE MEET

A Poplar Bluff diver finished in the top 10 on Thursday at the MSHSAA Class 1 Swimming and Diving State Championships.

Poplar Bluff’s Allison Williamson finished in 10th place in the Girls one meter dive.

The Mules also had two teams finish in the top 20 in the preliminaries of the swimming competition, the 200 Freestyle Relay team of Dakota Collins, Lynn Cotrell, Kate Scott, and Keira Willis placed 17th.

DR. CYNTHIA BROWN NAMED POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL BOARD PRESIDENT

A new voice is stepping in as president of the Poplar Bluff School Board.

According to officials, the board reorganized Thursday night and named Dr. Cynthia Brown as President and Dave Elledge as Vice President.

Brown will be replacing former president Timothy Gaebler who announced earlier this month that he was stepping down and moving out of the district.

The School Board is also accepting applications to finish Gaebler’s term on the board. Interested persons may apply at the Superintendent's office during regular business hours through March 6th.

DEXTER EARNS MISSOURI BLUE SHIELD DESIGNATION

Dexter is the latest Southeast Missouri community to earn the Missouri Blue Shield designation.

The Missouri Department of Public Safety has announced that the city of Dexter was one of 15 communities to be selected for the designation, recognizing the community for its commitment to enhancing public safety and supporting law enforcement.

Sikeston and Ironton were also among the 15 communities chosen.

Achieving the Blue Shield designation allows communities to access state grants for law enforcement training and equipment.

SEARCH LEADS TO SEIZURE OF FIREARMS, AMMUNITION AND NARCOTICS AT WAYNE COUNTY RESIDENCE

A joint operation has resulted in the seizure of firearms from a residence in Wayne County.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, a joint operation was conducted in Mill Spring on Thursday, which included federal agents, the drug task force, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and conservation agents.

The operation included a search of the residence of Jerry Millmaker and Cory Enriquez, which resulted in the seizure of firearms, ammunition, and narcotics.

Officials say that federal agents are seeking charges for the firearms and ammunition violations.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Department is seeking charges for possession of controlled substance and drug paraphernalia against both Millmaker and Enriquez.

LATEST DROUGHT MONITOR SHOWS MOST OF CARTER COUNTY IN SEVERE DROUGHT

The latest US Drought Monitor has been released showing most of Southeast Missouri is in at least a severe drought.

The monitor, released on Thursday, also has most of Carter and part of Ripley County currently experiencing extreme drought.

The eastern half of Stoddard County and most of New Madrid County are only in a moderate drought or better.

Route J in Stoddard County will be closed today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace a culvert under the roadway.

EUGENE FIELD ELEMENTARY NAMED NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL DAYS BEFORE PROGRAM WAS DISMANTLED

An elementary school in Poplar Bluff was named as a National Blue Ribbon School right before the program was eliminated.

According to school officials Eugene Field Elementary received official confirmation that all measurable objectives had been met to become a Blue Ribbon School just days before learning that the U.S. Department of Education had dismantled the program.

The Blue Ribbon Program was established in 1982 for top schools to share best practices. Eugene Field is the third elementary school in Poplar Bluff to earn the honor.

AUTOPSY REVEALS THAT MAN WHO WAS STRUCK BY A TRAIN IN POPLAR BLUFF HAD SUFFERED MEDICAL CONDITION BEFORE INCIDENT

An autopsy has been completed on a man who was struck by a train Tuesday night in Poplar Bluff.

Butler County Coroner Jim Akers tells KWOC News that 66 year old Charles Lynn Gibson, of Hope, Arkansas, was struck by the train at around 8:45 pm on Tuesday.

Witnesses at the scene reported that Gibson was lying on the train tracks and did not move when the train conductor was blowing his horn.

Akers says an autopsy was conducted that showed that Gibson was alive prior to the situation but had suffered a medical incident.

The investigation is being conducted by the Butler County Coroner’s Office, the Poplar Bluff Police Department, and Union Pacific Railroad.

2026 THREE RIVERS COLLEGE RAIDER REUNION SET FOR THIS WEEKEND

The 2026 Three Rivers College Raider Reunion is coming up this weekend.

The festivities will start tonight with the Raider Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at the Westwood Center.

A full day of activities is planned for Saturday on the campus of Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff.

Events include a pancake breakfast, alumni art exhibit, Baseball double-header vs Kankakee Community College, Raider of the Year recognition, and both Lady Raiders and Raiders basketball games versus Mineral Area College.

A big weekend is ahead for the Poplar Bluff Mules Basketball team.

Officials say that tonight is homecoming night for Poplar Bluff, The boys JV game against the Charleston Blue Jays will begin at 6 pm, with the varsity game scheduled to start at 7:30 pm.

On Saturday, the Mules will be honoring Poplar Bluff’s own Wheatley High School by wearing the Wheatley Tigers uniforms during their home game against Cape Central.

The JV game on Saturday will begin at noon, with the varsity contest following at 1:30 pm at Poplar Bluff High School.

MISSOURI 5TH GRADERS ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT POSTER FOR 2026 DRINKING WATER WEEK CONTEST

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the Missouri Section American Water Works Association are holding a poster contest for students in the fifth grade in celebration of Drinking Water Week.

According to officials, this year’s poster theme is “Save It, Don’t Waste It!” and posters should show ways to save and conserve drinking water.

Entries will be judged on three criteria: How original the entry is, how well the concept is executed and how well the poster relates to public water supplies.

Drinking water week will be held from May 3rd to May 9th and entries will be accepted through the end of the month.

MAN FOUND DEAD AFTER BEING HIT BY A TRAIN IN POPLAR BLUFF

An investigation is underway after an Arkansas man was found dead after being struck by a train in Poplar Bluff.

Butler County Coroner Jim Akers tells KWOC News that 69 year old Charles Lynn Gibson, of Hope, Arkansas, was struck by the train at around 8:45 pm Tuesday night.

Witnesses at the scene reported that Gibson was lying on the train tracks and did not move when the train conductor was blowing his horn.

Akers added that it is believed that Gibson had passed away before the train struck him, but an autopsy will be performed to confirm a cause of death.

The investigation is being conducted by the Butler County Coroner’s Office, the Poplar Bluff Police Department, and Union Pacific Railroad.

Anyone who has had contact with Gibson over the past few days is asked to contact the Coroner’s Office at 573-686-7884 or the Poplar Bluff Police Department.

DETAILS RELEASED ABOUT FATAL CRASH IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Authorities have released details concerning a fatal crash from Valentines Day in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Arkansas State Police, 58 year old Melissa Alsup, of Paragould, was driving on US Highway 49 in Greene County, when her vehicle crossed into another lane and struck a vehicle head on.

Officials say that Alsup has died from injuries she received in the crash.

Two people in the second vehicle were injured and taken to an area hospital. The severity of their injuries were not released.

ADVANCE TEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN TWO VEHICLE CRASH

An Advance teenager was seriously injured in a crash Tuesday afternoon in Cape Girardeau County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the teen was driving on Highway AB when a vehicle crossed the center of the roadway and struck his vehicle.

The teen suffered serious injuries, while the driver of the other vehicle, a 34 year old man from Bloomfield, received moderate injuries. Both were transported to an area hospital.

OVER 650 GRAMS OF METH SEIZED DURING SEARCH IN PARAGOULD

Authorities in Northeast Arkansas have arrested two people after a search resulted in the seizure of a significant quantity of meth.

According to the Arkansas Second Judicial District Drug Task Force, earlier this month a traffic stop was conducted on a vehicle driven by Sean Bradley Kellim, who had two outstanding felony warrants for delivery of a controlled substance.

The passenger in the vehicle, Kassondra Rashell Blevins, attempted to exit the vehicle during the traffic stop. As she did so, she dropped a clear plastic bag containing approximately 29.9 grams of methamphetamine and attempted to destroy it. After being taken into custody, Blevins informed officers that she had two additional bags of methamphetamine concealed in her clothing, totaling approximately 114.9 grams.

Following the arrest, agents executed a search warrant at Kellim’s residence where they located approximately 513.1 grams of methamphetamine inside a black zippered container on a couch. Investigators also seized various items of drug paraphernalia, including surveillance cameras and a monitoring system.

Both individuals were transported to the Greene County Detention Center to await a bond hearing. Kellim is facing charges of trafficking a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and maintaining a drug premises. Blevins is facing charges of possession of methamphetamine and tampering with physical evidence.

According to officials, Route W will be closed between Route KK and County Road 508.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

CREWS TO BE PERFORMING BRIDGE MAINTENANCE TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route 51 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane with an 8-foot width restriction today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform bridge maintenance.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route DD to Route 60 in Fisk.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m, today.

Authorities in Butler County are investigating a threat made against an area school.

According to Neelyville R-4 Superintendent, Heather Black, earlier this week school officials were made aware of an alleged school safety threat and reported the allegation to law enforcement.

This report is being investigated by the Butler County Sheriff Office with full cooperation from the Neelyville School District.

Black says that at this time, there is no indication of an immediate danger to the schools.

WOMAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AFTER ALLEGEDLY THREATENING TO SHOOT ANOTHER PERSON

A woman has been taken into custody after allegedly threatening to shoot someone in Northeast Arkansas.

According to Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole, shortly after 6 pm on Monday, the Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call about a dispute at an apartment complex in St. Francis.

The dispute involved an individual at the apartments, whose father had shown up to take back a vehicle that his son was reportedly not paying for.

During the argument, the father’s girlfriend allegedly pulled a gun and threatened to shoot the individuals at the apartment. The father and girlfriend then left the scene.

A deputy made a felony traffic stop on the subjects on Highway 139, south of Piggott. When the deputies searched the vehicle they found a 12 gauge shotgun.

Cole says that 57 year old Debra Kellums, of Hornersville, was taken into custody and booked into the Clay County Detention Center on a charge of aggravated assault.

POSSIBLE MEASLES EXPOSURE REPORTED AT ST. LOUIS AIRPORT

State health officials are warning Missouri residents about a confirmed case of measles at St. Louis Lambert International Airport.

According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, a confirmed case of measles from an out-of-state resident was reported to have traveled through the airport between 5 and 7 p.m. on February 7th following a domestic flight.

The individual was in Terminal 2, at baggage claim, and rode a shuttle to the parking area. Those potentially exposed during the individual’s flight are being notified directly.

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that typically begins with fever, cough, runny nose, and red and watery eyes. Officials say that one person with measles can easily pass it on to 9 out of 10 people around them who are unvaccinated or do not have natural immunity. 

Symptoms appear 7-14 days, on average, after contact with the virus. Tiny white spots may appear inside the mouth 2-3 days after symptoms begin. Measles rash appears 3 to 5 days after the first symptoms.

All individuals with possible exposures should watch for the symptoms of measles for 21 days, until February 28 in this case. Individuals should report to their local public health agency if symptoms appear.

NORTHEAST ARKANSAS MAN APPOINTED TO STATE BOARD

A Northeast Arkansas man has been appointed to a state board.

Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced Tuesday that Kyle Lane, of Paragould, has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of the State Police Retirement System.

Lane will fill a previously vacant position and his term is set to expire July 1, 2028.

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO APPLY FOR GRANTS FOR PROJECT PROM AND GRADUATION

Schools who will be holding Project Prom and Graduation events this year can apply for grant money to help fund the events.

The Southeast Coalition for Roadway Safety is offering grant funding to local schools that choose student lock-in events for Project Prom or High School graduation. Qualifying schools will receive $200 each to assist with event expenses such as location rental, food or entertainment.

MAN IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO CARTER COUNTY BURGLARY INVESTIGATION

Authorities in Carter County have arrested a man in connection to a multiweek burglary investigation.

According to Carter County Sheriff Alonzo Bradwell, over the last couple of weeks, his office has been investigating a burglary in the Eastwood area. The investigation has led to his team successfully recovering several stolen items.

The investigation also resulted in a warrant being served last week for Matthew Richardson, of Van Buren, on a charge of stealing.

MAN ACCUSED OF STRIKING OFFICER DURING ARREST ATTEMPT IN CORNING

A man who was wanted on a rape warrant is now facing additional charges after allegedly striking an officer during an arrest attempt.

According to the Corning Police Department, on Sunday, officers responded to a report of a potentially intoxicated individual at an area business.

An officer made contact with the subject, who became increasingly agitated and belligerent. The subject entered his vehicle and refused requests to exit.

The officers then attempted to remove the subject from the vehicle at which point, he began to resist. Officials say that during the ensuing struggle, the suspect struck one of the officers in the head.

The suspect was then subdued and taken into custody. Officers discovered that the suspect, identified as 34 year old Melvin Bell, had an outstanding felony warrant from Mississippi County for rape.

Bell was booked in the Clay County Detention Center on charges of 2nd degree battery, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.

His bond was set at $500,000, cash or surety.

WOMAN FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH NEAR ELLINGTON

A woman was flown from the scene of a single vehicle crash Sunday afternoon in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 75 year old woman, from Salem, was driving on Highway 21, four miles south of Ellington, when her vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway, overturned, and struck a tree.

The woman suffered serious injuries in the crash and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

WOMAN FACING CHARGE OF STATUTORY RAPE IN SCOTT COUNTY

A Sikeston woman is scheduled to appear in court today on a charge of statutory rape.

According to Missouri Case Net, 43 year old Jennifer Van Dam has been charged with felony 2nd degree statutory rape and enticement or attempted enticement of a child.

A Probable Cause Affidavit states that a juvenile victim told authorities that they had sexual relations with Van Dam multiple times. Investigators also discovered inappropriate text messages between Van Dam and another juvenile.

A warrant was served last week on Van Dam and no bond was set in the case.

BLOOMFIELD AREA ROAD TO BE REDUCED FOR ALMOST TWO WEEKS FOR REPAIRS

Route J in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane for over a week so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform drainage repairs. 

The work zone will be located from County Road 413 to County Road 437 near Bloomfield.

Weather permitting, work is scheduled to take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through Friday, February 27.

CREWS TO BE TRIMMING TREES THIS WEEK NEAR ESSEX

Route 114 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews trim the trees along the roadway.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route 60 to Route FF near Essex.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI REFEREE TO OFFICIATE THE SHOW ME SHOWDOWN

A Southeast Missouri referee will be officiating the biggest basketball tournament in the state.

Laura Hagood has been selected as one of the officials for the Show Me Showdown this spring.

Hagood has been a high school basketball official for a total of 16 years and tells KWOC News that she is excited and honored to be selected.

Hagood is only the second female official from the SEMO District to be chosen for the championship tournament.

KIWANIS PANCAKE DAY SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 21ST

The Kiwanis Club of Poplar Bluff will be hosting a Pancake Day in March.

With Valentine’s Day just behind us, state officials are sounding alarm bells about an increase in romance scams.

Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway is warning state residents that romance scams are one of the fastest-growing forms of fraud, costing victims billions of dollars each year.

Romance scams occur when criminals create fake identities online to form emotional relationships, gain trust, and ultimately manipulate victims into sending money, financial information, or personal data.

Scammers often operate through dating apps, social media platforms, messaging services, and even professional networking sites.

Some warning signs of romance scams include, professions or life stories that seem unusually glamorous or tragic, reluctance or refusal to meet in person or appear on live video calls, requests for money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or financial assistance—often framed as emergencies, rapid expressions of love or commitment, and attempts to isolate the victim from friends or family.

FUNERAL SERVICES TO BE HELD ON SATURDAY FOR FORMER BUTLER COUNTY CORONER, LARRY COTRELL

A longtime Butler County Coroner will be laid to rest this Saturday.

Larry Cotrell passed away on Monday at the age of 85. Cotrell was elected as Butler County Coroner in 1969 and held the position for 40 years. During his tenure he also served as the interim sheriff on two separate occasions.

Cotrell also owned and operated Cotrell Funeral Service in Poplar Bluff for over 40 years. He was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Missouri State Board of Funeral Service. He was also the Past-President of the Southeast Missouri Funeral Directors Association.

Cotrell also served on the Poplar Bluff Industries Board, the Greater Poplar Bluff Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Poplar Bluff Airport Board, and Three Rivers College Foundation Board, among others.

Cotrell’s visitation will be held on Saturday from 10 am to noon at First United Methodist Church. Funeral service will follow beginning at noon. His burial will take place at the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.

NAMES RELEASED OF THREE KILLED IN DEXTER HOUSE FIRE

Updating a story we have been following for you, officials have released the names of three people who were found dead following a house fire early Wednesday morning in Stoddard County.

According to Dexter Fire Chief Don Seymore, crews responded to a two story house fire on Truitt Street shortly before 2 am Wednesday morning.

Stoddard County Coroner Brent Stidham tells KWOC News that three people died in the fire, 43 year old Brittany Beckham, 13 year old Bella Van Vickle, and five year old Athena Bradford.

Stidham added that preliminary autopsy findings indicate that all three died as a result of smoke inhalation.

Two others were transported to area hospitals following the fire.

MALDEN MAN SENTENCED IN CONNECTION TO MULTIPLE PURSUITS WITH POLICE

A Malden man has been sentenced to multiple years in prison in connection to multiple pursuits from last year.

According to Dunklin County Prosecuting Attorney Nicholas Jain, earlier this week 36 year old James Clopton was sentenced to seven years in the Missouri Department of Corrections on each of two counts of felony aggravated fleeing, five years for felony stealing, and four years on each of two counts of felony resisting arrest.

The Court ordered the sentences to run concurrently.

Jain says the charges stem from an incident last February, where Clopton fled from a traffic stop before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing on foot. The vehicle was towed but reported missing from the tow lot the following morning.

Later that day, Clopton fled from police again in the same vehicle, and once again abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

He was ultimately located and taken into custody with the assistance of a drone equipped with thermal imaging technology.

PARAGOULD MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON SEXUAL ASSAULT CHARGE

A Northeast Arkansas man has been taken into custody on a sexual assault charge.

According to a warrant affidavit, on Wednesday, a report was made to the Child Abuse Hotline and Paragould Police Department regarding a child who had made a disclosure of sexual abuse.

Multiple witnesses were interviewed and said that the victim had disclosed that 58 year old Robert Medcalf, of Paragould, had inappropriately touched them.

Medcalf has been arrested on felony charges of sexual assault in the second degree and sexual indecency with a child.

He was held in the Greene County jail on a $500,000 bond.

ILLEGAL GAMBLING INVESTIGATION LEADS TO CHARGES FOR MULTIPLE BUSINESSES

Multiple businesses in Southeast Missouri have been charged in connection to an illegal gambling investigation.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control, an investigation was conducted over multiple years concerning several businesses in Dunklin County.

In 2024, the Dunklin County Prosecutor’s Office requested DDCC investigate several businesses for illegal gambling activity involving video lottery terminals. During the undercover investigation, it was determined five area businesses utilized illegal video gambling devices to generate illicit revenue.

Last March, search warrants were executed at five businesses, Swindel’s Quick Shop and Dixie Package in Malden as well as Jays Corner Store, Up In Smoke - Clouds, and Kennett Liquor and Tobacco in Kennett. During the operation, investigators seized a total of 73 illegal gambling devices that contained a total of over $4,200 in U.S. currency.

The operation was a collaborative effort involving DDCC investigators, Patrol uniformed members, Malden Department of Public Safety, Kennett Police Department, and members of the Dunklin County Sheriff's Office.

On Tuesday, the Dunklin County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office formally charged each business with one felony count of promoting gambling in the first degree.

ARKANSAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO RECEIVE OVER SIX MILLION DOLLARS FOR FUTURE I-57 PROJECT

Additional funding has been announced for the Future Interstate 57 project in Northeast Arkansas.

According to a press release, The Arkansas Department of Transportation is set to receive $6.7 million for the next phase of Future Interstate 57 from Walnut Ridge to the Missouri State Line.

The funding is from the latest Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development appropriation for Federal Fiscal Year 2026.

DONIPHAN MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON CHARGE OF AGGRAVATED ASSAULT

A Doniphan man has been taken into custody following an incident Tuesday that crossed from Missouri into Arkansas.

According to Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole, at approximately 2:15 pm Tuesday, Clay County authorities were informed by the Doniphan Police Department about an incident in progress that was heading into Clay County.

A caller had advised that she was in her car with two children and that her ex-boyfriend was trying to force her off the road.

The man then passed the vehicle and blocked the road in front of her, and could then be heard hitting the woman’s vehicle with his hands.

This episode reportedly occurred multiple times before the man saw a deputy. The deputy took the subject, 28 year old Devin Browning, of Doniphan, into custody.

Browning was transported to the Clay County Detention Center, and on charges of felony aggravated assault, two counts of felony endangering the welfare of a minor -1st degree, and misdemeanor careless/prohibited driving.

FEBRUARY IS EARTHQUAKE AWARENESS MONTH IN MISSOURI

February is earthquake awareness month in Missouri and state officials are urging residents to make sure they are prepared.

Officials say that earthquakes warrant special attention in Missouri because of the presence of the New Madrid Seismic Zone in southeast Missouri, which in 1811 and 1812 generated some of the most powerful earthquakes to ever jolt the U.S.

The Zone is still active, with an average of over 200 tiny earthquakes, most of which can’t be perceived, each year.

Experts estimate there is a 25 to 40 percent chance of a large earthquake occurring in the next 50 years.

DRIVER EXAMINATION STATIONS TO BE CLOSED FOR THE HOLIDAYS

State officials are reminding motorists that driver examinations will not be available on select days this month.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, driver examination stations throughout the state will be closed today in observance of President Lincoln’s Birthday.

Stations will also be closed on Monday, February 16th for President Washington’s Birthday.

DEXTER MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE SODOMY COUNTS

Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested an area man on multiple counts of sodomy.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, a warrant was served Monday on 30 year old Jesse Cole, of Dexter, for two counts of sodomy or attempted sodomy - 1st degree and a single count of sexual misconduct involving a child.

Cole is being held in the Stoddard County Jail on a $125,000, cash only, bond.

TWIN RIVERS PRESCHOOL SCREENING AND KINDERGARTEN ENROLLMENT SCHEDULED FOR MARCH

Officials in the Twin Rivers R-10 School District have announced they will be holding preschool screening and kindergarten enrollment in March.

Parents should bring their children, who are up to five years of age and not yet in kindergarten, for the screening which will be held March 18th and 19th at the Broseley High School.

Both events are from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.

Screening will be conducted in areas of health, vision, hearing, dental, speech, language, and development.

Each child should bring their immunization records, birth certificate, social security card, and a parent’s picture ID. Children enrolling in kindergarten must also bring three items providing proof of residency.

SOME NEW MADRID COUNTY RESIDENTS WILL RECEIVE NEW TAX BILL

Some New Madrid County residents will be receiving a new tax bill after a misprint was discovered in the initial notice.

According to Sikeston City Officials, during the recent transition of contracting with Scott and New Madrid Counties for the collection of City taxes, it was discovered that the Motor Vehicle Tax did not properly print on New Madrid County tax bills.

New Madrid County residents who are affected by this will receive a second notice in the mail for this tax, and have 60 days to pay without penalty.

Officials say that this was a printing error and not a new tax.

INVESTIGATION ONGOING INTO MULTIPLE REPORTS OF THEFT IN THE CLAY COUNTY

Clay County authorities are investigating multiple reports of theft.

According to Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole, the Sheriff’s Department was contacted by numerous people about a contractor taking money, but not doing any work. There were also complaints of the contractor being given money to buy materials, and never showing up with the material.

An investigation led to 36 year old Brandon Wolner, of Corning, being arrested Monday night on a warrant for five felony counts of theft.

ROADSIDE WORK SCHEDULED FOR TODAY NEAR MALDEN

Route H in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform roadside work.

The work zone is located near Malden, between Route J and County Road 128.

Work is scheduled to take place today from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

CULVERT REPLACEMENT PROJECT SET FOR THIS WEEK IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

Route O in Pemiscot County will be closed this week so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can replace a culvert under the roadway.

The section of roadway is located from County Road 560 to County Road 555. While work takes place, the road will be open to local traffic only.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily through Friday.

Authorities have released the name of a woman who was found dead following a house fire Sunday afternoon in southern Butler County.

Emergency crews responded to the fire at around noon on Sunday on Highway C, south of Poplar Bluff.

Butler County Coroner Jim Akers tells KWOC News that the person found dead had been identified as 76 year old Kerry Wilson, of Poplar Bluff. Akers says that Wilson was identified thanks to a dental examination by Dr. Mike Price.

AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING VANDALISM AT SOUTHEAST MISSOURI CEMETERY

Authorities in a Southeast Missouri community are investigating a report of vandalism at an area cemetery.

According to the Woodlawn Cemetery in Campbell’s Facebook page, they are trying to obtain more information about recent damage to multiple headstones at the cemetery.

The Dunklin County Sheriff’s Office says that anyone who has information about the damage is asked to call 573-888-2424 and ask to speak with Deputy Bryce Tinsley.

PUBLIC MEETING SCHEDULED FOR TODAY TO DISCUSS INTERSECTION PROJECT NEAR MATTHEWS

The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing today to discuss improving the intersection of U.S. Route 61 and Route 80 near Matthews.

The hearing will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Nutrition Center in Matthews.

During the meeting, MoDOT will share two alternatives for this safety improvement project—installing traffic signals or constructing a roundabout.

Tentatively, construction could begin as early as June 2027. Once work begins, it will be underway for approximately nine months. Motorists should anticipate delays, but the intersection will remain open to traffic during construction.

The public hearing will be open house style, and visitors can stop by anytime between 4 and 6 p.m. to discuss the details of the proposals with the project team.

DONIPHAN CHEER SQUAD PLACES 3RD IN NATIONAL COMPETITION

A southeast Missouri cheer team placed in the top three at a national competition over the weekend.

The Doniphan High School Cheer Squad finished in 3rd Place in the small coed gameday division at the America’s Cheerleading Cup National Championship.

The competition was held this past weekend in Orlando, Florida.

JOINT OPERATION LEADS TO ARREST OF FOUR PEOPLE IN RIPLEY COUNTY

A collaboration between multiple law enforcement agencies has led to the arrest of four people in Ripley County.

According to the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, on February 5th officers with the Ripley County Sheriff's Office, Missouri State Highway Patrol, SEMO Drug Task Force, and the Missouri Attorney General's Office - Operation Relentless Pursuit Task Force executed a search warrant at a residence in Naylor.

During the search, officers located a quantity of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

38 year old Joshua Leonard, of Naylor, and 54 year old Wilburn McCollum, of Corning, were each arrested on charges of trafficking drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia. Leonard is also facing a charge of unlawful use of a weapon.

31 year old Jessica Ezell, of Naylor, was arrested on charges of hindering prosecution on a felony offense and 1st degree endangering the welfare of a child. A fourth subject in the home was arrested on a Ripley County warrant for a traffic offense.

FORMER BASEBALL COACH NAMED TRC RAIDER OF THE YEAR

A former head baseball coach and player for Three Rivers College has been named the 2026 Raider of the Year.

A native of Springfield, Missouri, Stacey Burkey compiled a 23-9 pitching record over two years at Three Rivers and two years at Missouri State.

As coach, Burkey led the Raiders for 27 years before retiring in 2020 with 604 wins. While at Three Rivers, Burkey also served as an assistant baseball coach, assistant women’s basketball coach, intramural program director, adjunct instructor, athletic dorm manager, and student manager for the men’s basketball team.

After 33 years with the baseball program, six as an assistant, and 27 as head coach, Burkey has stayed involved in Three Rivers athletics as a driver, and gives youth baseball lessons in his spare time. His son Noah is in his first season as an assistant baseball coach with Three Rivers.

The Raider of the Year Award is presented to a former Raider athlete who has achieved success beyond their sport and time at Three Rivers.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGEDLY THREATENING TO KILL SEVERAL FAMILY MEMBERS AND FRIENDS

A man has been taken into custody on multiple charges following an incident last week in Northeast Arkansas.

According to Corning Police Chief Blaine McClung, on Thursday, officers responded to an area business for a man who was yelling at employees and attempting to engage in physical altercations.

34 year old Raymond Fox, of Corning, was transported to the Clay County Detention Center on a charge of disorderly conduct

On Friday, a felony warrant was issued for Fox related to a prior incident in which he allegedly threatened to kill several family members and friends, as well as damaged property.

He is now facing charges of felony 1st degree terroristic threatening and misdemeanor 1st degree criminal mischief.

His bond was set at $100,000.

TREE TRIMMING CREWS TO BE WORKING THIS WEEK ALONG ROUTE ZZ IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route ZZ in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane for part of this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews trim trees along the roadway. 

The section of roadway being reduced is located from County Road 648 to County Road 659 near Dexter.

RESIGNATION OF POPLAR BLUFF CITY MANAGER ROBERT KNODELL ACCEPTED BY CITY COUNCIL

The Poplar Bluff City Council met in a closed session on Wednesday where the council unanimously accepted Knodell’s letter of resignation.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING CRASH ON HIGHWAY 53 IN BUTLER COUNTY

A Qulin man has died following a crash Thursday morning in Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at around 6:20 am on Highway 53 when a truck ran off the roadway, overturned, and struck a tree.

The crash scene was located five miles north of Qulin.

Butler County Coroner Jim Akers tells KWOC News that the driver, identified as 60 year old Robert Wade Sullivan, of Qulin, was flown from the scene and pronounced dead at a Paragould hospital.

FIVE NAMED TO THE THREE RIVERS COLLEGE ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME

Five new inductees have been named to the Three Rivers College Athletic Hall of Fame.

According to college officials, Sam Weaver, Stephanie Dorris-Miller, Jack Childress, Alan Mahaffey, and Danny Jake Baehr have been chosen as the 2026 inductees.

The college will host a banquet honoring the inductees on February 20th at the Westwood Center in Poplar Bluff.

Located in the Libla Family Sports Complex, the Hall of Fame will be open for viewing during the TRC basketball games at the annual Alumni Reunion on February 21.

WAYNE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT WARNING RESIDENTS TO BE AWARE OF A PHONE SCAM

Authorities in Wayne County are advising area residents to be aware of a phone scam that has been reported in the area.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, do not give any information to someone who calls you, claims to be employed by the Sheriff’s Department, and says you have a warrant.

Officials say that Sheriff’s Department employees will never call to advise you have an active warrant.

If you do receive a call like this, attempt to get the phone number they are calling from and notify the Sheriff’s Department at 573-224-3219.

NAYLOR MAN ARRESTED ON METH AND GUN CHARGES

Authorities in Ripley County have arrested an area man on gun and drug charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 63 year old Danny St. Cin, of Naylor was arrested shortly before midnight Tuesday night on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine and two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Troopers also arrested 68 year old James Yandell, of Fairdealing, on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine.

MAN IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO SHOOTING INVESTIGATION

A man is in custody in the Missouri bootheel in connection to a shooting investigation.

According to Steele Police Chief Billy Joe Stanfield, officers were dispatched to a report of shots being fired during the early morning hours of January 20th.

Officers located a vehicle occupied by two people, one being a young woman with a gunshot wound to the head. The victim was transported to an area hospital.

An investigation led to the arrest of 21 year old Trenton Green, of Steele, on February 3rd.

Green is facing charges of 1st degree assault or attempt, two counts of armed criminal action, unlawful use of a firearm, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

He is being held at the Pemiscot County Justice Center on no bond.

REGISTRATION OPENS FOR THE 2026 OPTIMIST SOCCER LEAGUE IN POPLAR BLUFF

Registration is now open for the 2026 Poplar Bluff Optimist Soccer League.

Registration for youth in kindergarten through sixth grades will be open through February 15th and the registration fee is $25.

Games are tentatively scheduled to begin the week of March 23rd.

21 YEAR OLD MAN FLOWN TO HOSPITAL AFTER ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING

A man in the Missouri Bootheel was flown to an area hospital last week after accidental shooting himself.

According to officials, on January 30th, a 21 year old man was brought to the Steele Police Department with a gunshot wound to the neck.

A police captain administered first aid until EMS crews could arrive. The man was subsequently flown out via helicopter. Officials say that the man was last known to be in stable condition and recovering well.

An investigation determined that the man accidentally fired the pistol, causing a self-inflicted injury.

DEADLINE SET TO REMOVE ITEMS BEFORE ANNUAL POPLAR BLUFF CITY CEMETERY CLEAN UP

Poplar Bluff residents still have time to remove objects they want to keep before the annual city cemetery clean up.

The Poplar Bluff Cemetery Department will be cleaning both the City and Woodlawn Cemetery’s beginning on March 2nd, with the project anticipated to be completed by March 30th.

Everyone is asked to remove any flower arrangements, personal items, and decorations that you would like to keep before March 2nd.

APPLICATIONS FOR SPRING MANAGED TURKEY HUNTS AVAILABLE THIS MONTH

Missouri conservation officials say that applications are available this month for spring managed turkey hunts.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, Missouri hunters can apply online for the managed hunts during the month of February through the MDC website at mdc.mo.gov/SpringTurkeyHunts.

Managed hunt details and application procedures are outlined on that webpage. Drawing results will be posted starting March 15th.

Spring turkey hunting youth weekend will be April 11th and 12th with the regular spring season running April 20th through May 10th.

Detailed information on spring turkey hunting will be available in the MDC 2025 Spring Turkey Hunting Regulations and Information booklet which will be available beginning in March.

MEETING SCHEDULED FOR TODAY TO DISCUSS PROPOSED ROAD PROJECT IN KENNETT

Kennett residents will have the opportunity to hear more about a proposed road project today.

The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting to discuss replacing signals and improving the intersection of Route 84 at Main and Kennett Streets in Kennett. The meeting will be held in the Kennett City Council Chamber at 200 Cedar Street.

The public meeting will be open-house style, and visitors can stop by anytime between 4 and 6 p.m.

The proposed project includes reconfiguring the direction of parking and traffic on the west side of the Dunklin County Courthouse. The improvements will feature a crossing in front of the courthouse to enhance pedestrian visibility, as foot traffic is common in this location.

In addition, a larger island will be constructed southwest of the courthouse at the Route 84/Main Street intersection to help mitigate potential driver confusion.

Tentatively, the project could be let in March of 2027, with construction beginning as early as May 2027. Once construction starts, work will be underway for approximately three months.

COALITION FOR ROADWAY SAFETY OFFERING GRANTS FOR PROJECT PROM AND GRADUATION

Schools who will be holding Project Prom and Graduation events this year can now apply for grant money to help fund the events.

The Southeast Coalition for Roadway Safety is offering grant funding to local schools that choose student lock-in events for Project Prom or High School graduation. Qualifying schools will receive $200 each to assist with event expenses such as location rental, food or entertainment.

The Southeast Coalition will be accepting applications through February 18th.

PRESIDING CIRCUIT JUDGE KACEY PROCTOR SELECTED FOR MCCA DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD

An area judge is being honored by the Missouri Community College Association.

The MCCA has selected Kacey Proctor, the Presiding Circuit Judge of the 36th Judicial Circuit, as the 2026 MCCA Distinguished Alumni Award winner.

Last year, Proctor was chosen as the Distinguished Alumni Award recipient for Three Rivers College.

Former Missouri Governor Mike Parson appointed Proctor as Presiding Circuit Judge in 2023 following the retirement of Presiding Circuit Judge Michael Pritchett.

Proctor also served 13 years in the National Guard, deploying to the Middle East, and eventually earning the rank of Captain.

TEENAGER SERIOUSLY INJURED IN CRASH NEAR PUXICO

A Puxico teenager was seriously injured in a weekend crash.

According to authorities, an 18 year old woman was driving on Highway 51 in Stoddard County when her vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway, hit an embankment, went airborne, and then hit a tree.

The crash occurred Sunday morning, eight miles south of Puxico.

The teen suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported to a Dexter hospital.

ARKANSAS MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE DRUG CHARGES IN MISSOURI BOOTHEEL

Authorities in Southeast Missouri have arrested an Arkansas man on multiple drug related charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 63 year old Franklin Pierce, of Leachville, Arkansas, was arrested over the weekend on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance for cocaine and methamphetamine as well as possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, Pierce was held at the Dunklin County Jail.

HAM AND BEANS FUNDRAISER SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND TO BENEFIT CARDWELL FIREFIGHTERS

A special event has been scheduled for this weekend to benefit Cardwell firefighters.

The Ham and Beans Dinner Fundraiser will be held from 5 to 7 pm on February 7th at the Cardwell City Hall.

The dinner is $8 and includes ham and beans, cornbread, and a drink. For $10, you will also get a side of fried potatoes.

STORM SPOTTER TRAINING COURSE IN POPLAR BLUFF RESCHEDULED FOR MARCH 30TH

You have the opportunity to learn more about different weather risks and how to report them at a class scheduled for next month in Poplar Bluff.

The National Weather Service will be hosting a Skywarn Storm Spotter Training Basic Spotter Course on Monday, March 30th.

The event will begin at 6 pm at Three Rivers College.

The class will last for approximately two and a half hours and all course material is free.

BRIDGE REPLACEMENT TO UNDERWAY IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

Route B in Pemiscot County will be closed for over four months as contractor crews replace the Little River Bridge.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the bridge is located from Route A to County Road 216 near Wardell.

Weather permitting, work began this week with an anticipated completion date of Monday, June 15th.

BILLY COBB NAMED POPLAR BLUFF CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

A Poplar Bluff man is being recognized for his lifelong efforts in bettering the city.

Billy Cobb was announced as the 2025 Citizen of the Year during the 88th Annual Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce Banquet Saturday night at the Black River Coliseum.

According to Chamber President Steve Halter, Cobb had a hand in developments throughout Poplar Bluff, including the Industrial Park Bypass, Eight Points, and Three Rivers College. He was also involved in planning and site design for many of the industries that call Poplar Bluff home.

In addition, Cobb served as Butler County's floodplain manager and helped secure funding and design for the trails in the city and county, including the Wolf Creek Trail and its connection to the city.

Cobb served on multiple boards including the building standards board, the Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce, and as president of the Poplar Bluff Housing Authority board. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and a devoted member of Fellowship General Baptist Church.

Cobb passed away in September at the age of 48. The award was posthumously presented Saturday night to Cobb’s family in recognition of his lifetime of contributions to the community.

Halter tells KWOC News “Over the years, Billy became more than a work colleague — he became a true friend. He dedicated himself fully to his community and stood firmly beside his family. Within Smith & Company, Billy was the glue that held the team together — the one everyone turned to when a challenge seemed unsolvable. His leadership helped create hundreds, if not thousands, of jobs and careers throughout our region through the projects he guided. Billy is already deeply missed and richly deserving of this honor. I feel truly blessed that God allowed his light to shine on our community and that I had the privilege of knowing him”

NEW BUTLER COUNTY CIRCUIT CLERK SWORN IN

A new Circuit Clerk was sworn in on Friday at a public event in Butler County.

Holly Lawson was appointed as the new Butler County Circuit Clerk. She is taking over for Cindi Bowman who retired at the end of January.

Lawson was sworn in on Friday in the Butler County Division One Courtroom.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI NATIVE HANNAH HARPER TO BE FEATURED ON AMERICAN IDOL TONIGHT

A Southeast Missouri woman who went viral online will be featured on national television tonight.

Hannah Harper’s audition will be aired on tonight’s telecast of American Idol.

In a preview clip released online, the Willow Springs resident sang an original song about her postpartum depression that brought former American Idol winner and current judge Carrie Underwood to tears.

According to her website, the mother of three boys is an aspiring songwriter who combines years of performing experience with her unique personal insights.

American Idol will air tonight at 7 pm on ABC.

TEENAGER TAKEN INTO CUSTODY FOLLOWING FATAL ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING

A teenager has been taken into custody after a shooting that left another teen dead.

According to Charleston Department of Public Safety Director Robert Hearnes, on January 29th officers responded to an area residence for a report of a person being shot.

Officers found a 16 year old male who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The SEMO Major Case Squad was requested to assist in the investigation, which determined that the victim had been shot by accident.

Hearnes says that a 14 year old male was taken into custody and turned over to juvenile authorities.

Hearnes added that manslaughter charges are expected to be filed soon.

BUTLER COUNTY WARNING SIRENS TO BE TESTED TODAY

Don’t be surprised if you hear sirens today in Butler County.

According to the Butler County Emergency Management Office, the county and Poplar Bluff’s outdoor warning sirens are scheduled to be tested today at noon.

As a part of the monthly test, the sirens will be playing God Bless America.

Officials say that the tests will be conducted every month on the first Monday.

DONIPHAN WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH

A Doniphan woman was seriously injured in a single vehicle crash Friday morning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 56 year old woman was driving on US Highway 67 in Wayne County when her vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway before striking a snow bank and a sign.

She was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital with serious injuries.

CREWS TO REPLACE BRIDGE OVER CRAVEN DITCH IN BUTLER COUNTY

Route 158 in Butler County will be closed beginning today so contractor crews can replace the bridge over Craven Ditch.

The work zone will be located from County Road 341 to County Road 339 near Harviell.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the road will remain closed through Sunday, May 3, weather permitting.
