TAKE STEPS TO PROTECT YOUR HOME AHEAD OF THE UPCOMING WINTER WEATHER
With winter weather coming to the area this weekend along with temperatures dropping to the single digits, have you taken steps to make sure that your home is ready?
Extreme cold can cause water pipes in your home to freeze and sometimes rupture or break.
When you are expecting very cold or freezing temperatures leave all water taps slightly open so they drip continuously, keep the temperature inside your home warm, and open cabinet doors beneath the kitchen and bathroom sinks to allow heated air to reach pipes.
Use fireplaces, wood stoves, or other combustion heaters only if they are properly vented to the outside and do not leak gas from the flue or exhaust into the indoor air space.
Use electric space heaters with automatic shut-off switches and non-glowing elements. Make sure to keep them away from any flammable materials, like curtains or blankets.

An investigation is ongoing in connection to a poaching case in Carter County.
The Missouri Department of Conservation is asking the public for help in finding who illegally shot and left an adult bull elk as waste at Peck Ranch Conservation Area in southern Missouri the night of November 25, 2025.
Agents noted the animal was lying in an open field about 40 yards off of Trail 1 and had a bullet hole in its left shoulder. Tire tracks were also visible entering the field toward the elk, then circling back to the gravel trail and aggressively spinning away from the scene.
Conservation agents say that this was not a case of someone hunting legally and somehow mistaking the elk for a deer.
Missouri’s Operation Game Thief is offering a $15,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the poacher(s) who shot the elk. Call the OGT hotline at 1-800-392-1111 with any information related to this investigation. Callers may remain anonymous.

STATE OFFICIALS URGING MISSOURI RESIDENTS TO TAKE PRECAUTIONS AS FLU CASES SURGE
State officials are urging Missourians to take precautions as flu cases surge across the state.
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has recorded over 9,200 laboratory-confirmed influenza cases and 550 flu-related hospitalizations statewide.
Flu activity in Missouri typically begins in October and peaks during the winter months. This season, emergency department visits for influenza-like illness and positive lab tests climbed above baseline levels in the first week of December.
State officials say that the best defense against influenza is annual vaccination. DHSS recommends that everyone aged six months and older receive a flu shot as soon as possible. Vaccination reduces the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and complications, especially for high-risk groups such as seniors, young children and individuals with chronic health conditions.
Also remember to wash your hands frequently, use a tissue or your elbow to cover coughs and sneezes and avoid close contact with sick individuals.
For more information on flu prevention and where to get vaccinated, visit health.mo.gov.
