THREE PEOPLE CHARGED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI FOR MEDICAID FRAUD

Attorney General Catherine Hanaway tells KWOC News that Maci Legrand was barred from serving as a caregiver after her Good Cause Waiver was denied due to her criminal history.
Legrand then enlisted her friend Christal Calhoun to pose as the official attendant on paper while they split over $27,000 in Medicaid payments for care that was not provided as claimed.
Calhoun claimed to provide services to a Medicaid recipient who showed up to the hospital disheveled and soiled, and was diagnosed with cellulitis following supposed care.

MOTORISTS AND FARMERS URGED TO STAY ALERT ON ROADWAYS
Many area farmers will soon be starting or are already in the process of harvesting their crops and the Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding motorists to be prepared for heavier farm machinery traffic, especially on rural highways.
When you come up behind a tractor or other farm machinery, remember to slow down and be patient. Wait to pass until you have a clear view of the road ahead and there is no oncoming traffic. Never pass on a hill or curve.
Officials say that collisions commonly occur when a motorist tries to pass a left-turning farm vehicle. A tractor that appears to be pulling to the right side of the road to let motorists pass, instead may be preparing to make a wide left turn.
Be sure to watch the farmer’s hand and light signals closely.

With Harvest Season underway, farmers are urged to take steps to protect themselves and other motorists while on Missouri highways.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, in 2025, there were 163 Missouri traffic crashes involving farm equipment or implements.
Farmers are being asked to make sure your farm equipment is properly marked with lights and a “slow-moving vehicle” emblem when you travel on the roadway. If traffic accumulates behind you on the road where it is difficult to make a safe pass, pull off onto the side of the road in a level area, so vehicles can pass.
ATVs being used for farming can only travel on highways during daylight hours and must be equipped with lights, a bicycle flag, and a "slow-moving vehicle" emblem.
The law requires anyone under the age of 18 to wear a safety helmet when operating an ATV; however, the Highway Patrol recommends operators wear a safety helmet regardless of age.

UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT THROWS OUT MISSOURI CONGRESSIONAL MAPS
The U.S. Supreme Court again rejected Missouri congressional maps backed by President Donald Trump on Thursday, a loss for Republicans trying to maintain control of the House in the pivotal midterm elections.
The decision appears to clear the way for the state to use a map passed in 2022, as the state's highest court ordered.
It's part of a pitched legal battle that has created confusion for voters and others shortly before ballots begin going out for the November elections. The Trump administration had urged the court to keep the president’s preferred maps, which were aimed at gaining one additional GOP House seat.
No Supreme Court justices publicly dissented from the brief order. It did not detail the court’s legal reasoning, as is typical in emergency appeals.
Meanwhile, the legal fight featuring dueling orders from different courts continued unfolding in Missouri, where the state's top court held a hearing Thursday on whether to hold Republican Secretary of State Denny Hoskins in contempt for not following its orders to use districts passed after the last census. Hoskins had instead told local election authorities to use the new Trump-backed map, pointing to a competing order from a federal judge on Tuesday requiring its use.
Missouri Supreme Court judges, while questioning a state attorney representing Hoskins, repeatedly pressed for Hoskins to send out new guidance Thursday to use the 2022 version of the congressional districts. The court made no immediate decision on whether to hold Hoskins in contempt for his actions but urged him not to stray too far from the state's capital of Jefferson City.
The U.S. Supreme Court's decision likely means Missouri will run the general election with a different congressional map than was used in the primary. Some people might not be able to vote for the same candidate they chose in the primary. It’s an unusual situation that leaves Missouri without a clear-cut example to follow.

ALLIGATOR GAR RESTORATION EFFORTS CONTINUE IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
The Missouri Department of Conservation are continuing efforts to reintroduce the alligator gar fish to Southeast Missouri.
The MDC’s alligator gar stocking program began in 2007 at Mingo National Wildlife Refuge and has grown to extend throughout the area.
Officials say that restoration efforts have been sporadic but ongoing across the Bootheel since 2013, with more than 6,000 juvenile alligator gar being stocked in over a dozen locations, including Wilhelmina Conservation Area in Butler and Dunklin Counties, as well as Donaldson Point Conservation Area in New Madrid County.
Alligator gar may appear rough and dangerous, but they are an important part of our ecosystem. The species prefers to consume injured or sick fish that are easy to ambush.
MDC Officials say that this important service helps maintain the health of waterbodies and sport fish populations.
It is important to remember that alligator gar are protected by state law and cannot be possessed or killed. The younger fish may be confused for the more common shortnose gar, so proper identification is important.
For more information on alligator gar, visit mdc.mo.gov.

MOTORISTS ASKED TO WATCH FOR STUDENTS ON THE ROADWAYS
With Missouri students returning to school this week, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to watch for students.
Drivers should expect a change in traffic patterns ─ school buses and parents taking their children to school and many young drivers will join other motorists on the road and affect the morning and afternoon commute. Also expect an increase in pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
Missouri law states that on a two-lane road, if a school bus is stopped and displaying warning signals while loading or unloading children, drivers must stop when meeting and following the bus. However, it is only necessary to stop on a four-lane highway when following the bus.
Drivers, when you see a stopped school bus, stay alert and follow the law. Children may not be aware of traffic and dart unexpectedly into the roadway.
Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about riding a bus, walking, or driving to school in a safe manner.
