MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION REMINDS MISSOURIANS TO WATCH FOR BEARS
With spring underway, the Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding southeast Missouri residents to be Bear Aware.
According to MDC officials, Missouri is home to an estimated over 1,000 black bears with most being in the southern part of the state. During the spring, the bears leave their winter dens in search of food.
MDC Black Bear Biologist Nate Bowersock said it is important that people remove or secure bear attractants from their property, such as bird feeders, trash, barbeque grills, pet food, and food waste.
He noted that intentionally feeding bears can be dangerous as it makes the bears comfortable around people. It can also lead bears to cause significant damage to property while searching for a meal.
For more information on black bears in Missouri as well as tips to avoid issues if a bear has been sighted, go to mdc.mo.gov/BearAware.

EXPERTS WARN RESIDENTS TO KEEP ELECTRICAL SAFETY IN MIND WHEN DOING SPRING PROJECTS
Spring is here and the longer days will inspire homeowners to get outdoor projects underway. But before getting started, it is important to be aware of the electrical safety hazards you may encounter.
KWOC News spoke with Ameren fire safety engineer Tim Frankenberg, who says that a little prevention can go a long way to keeping your family safe.
A good rule of thumb is to keep electric equipment at least 10 feet away from wet areas. You should also plug into ground fault circuit interrupters, which are designed to shut off the power as needed to prevent a shock.
If you will be digging, make sure to call 811 to have your underground utilities marked so you don’t accidentally hit a line.
Before plugging into an exterior electrical socket, double-check that your cords, lights or fans are rated for outdoor use. Look for labels on packaging that clearly mark them as suitable for outdoor use.

SEVERE WEATHER PREPAREDNESS WEEK CONTINUES WITH FLOOD SAFETY DAY
This week is Missouri Severe Weather Preparedness Week and we are wrapping up our ongoing feature with a look at flood safety.
According to the National Weather Service, typically, flooding results in more weather related fatalities than any other thunderstorm related hazard.
Officials say that this is because many of the deaths occur in automobiles when driven through flooded roads as they are swept downstream. Of these drownings, many are preventable, but too many people continue to drive across flooded roads.
Before flooding occurs in your area, learn which roadways are likely to flood and find an alternative route so you can avoid them. Also remember to create a communications plan so your family will know how to connect with each other during an emergency.
For more information, visit weather.gov/safety/flood.

SEVERE WEATHER PREPAREDNESS WEEK CONTINUES WITH HAIL AND WIND SAFETY DAY

Damaging straight line winds are much more common than tornadoes and can be just as deadly.
Those caught outdoors during a severe thunderstorm are particularly vulnerable, with boaters and campers especially needing to be alert to the potential of severe storms. Winds in excess of 60 mph can easily capsize boats and put campers at risk due to falling trees.

SEVERE WEATHER PREPAREDNESS WEEK CONTINUES WITH LIGHTNING SAFETY DAY
This week is Missouri Severe Weather Preparedness Week and today the focus is on Lightning safety.
According to the National Weather Service, when a severe thunderstorm threatens, it is often best to follow the same safety rules you follow if a tornado threatens.
Go to a basement if available. If not, go to the lowest level of the building and move to a small interior room or hallway. Stay away from doors and windows.
If time permits, move your vehicle into a garage or carport to help prevent damage. Avoid traveling in a severe thunderstorm – delay your travel plans until the storms pass or get off the road and seek shelter in a building.
Weather officials also say that there is really no safe place to go if you are outdoors when it is lightning. You must move to a building or an enclosed vehicle.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control says that investigators have seen a considerable increase in scams often targeting older adults and other members of the public, resulting in significant financial losses.
Criminals are using the internet, social media, email, dating sites, text messages, end to end encrypted messaging apps and phone calls to convince victims to send money through cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin, or other virtual currencies.
These scams are designed to appear legitimate and frequently rely on urgency, fear, or promises of guaranteed returns.
