SIKESTON MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER IN CONNECTION TO SHOOTING DEATH

A Sikeston man has been charged with murder in connection to a fatal shooting last week.

According to Scott County Sheriff Derick Wheetley, 23 year old Austin Nance was arrested Friday evening in connection to a shooting which took place on Thursday.

Wheetley said that deputies had found an adult male victim had been shot. The victim later died from his injuries at an area hospital.

Nance is facing charges of 1st degree murder and armed criminal action. He is being held on no bond.

Sheriff Wheetley says that this is still an active investigation and anyone with information concerning the shooting is asked to contact the Scott County Sheriff’s Office.

ONE KILLED, ANOTHER SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WEEKEND CRASH

A New Mexico man is dead following a weekend crash in New Madrid County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly before 10 pm Sunday night near Marston, where a vehicle was driving in a field and overturned.

One passenger, identified as a 21 year old man from Kirtland, New Mexico, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger, a 19 year old Farmington man, was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital with serious injuries.

No injuries were listed for the driver of the vehicle.

DEADLINE UPCOMING TO REGISTER FOR POPLAR BLUFF YOUTH BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL

The registration deadline is coming up for youth baseball and softball in Poplar Bluff.

According to the Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation Department, registration will be available through March 27th. Youth ball will be available for kids ages 4 to 14, with registration costing $20. Pre-season practice will begin mid-April, with league games starting in May.

NON FUNCTIONING OLD MILITARY GRENADE FOUND IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Officials in Southeast Missouri have taken possession of an old military hand grenade in Southeast Missouri.

According to Steele Police Chief Billy Joe Stanfield, on the evening of March 20th, the police department received a report from a citizen who had located what was described as an old military hand grenade.

Out of an abundance of caution, officers contacted the ATF and the Southeast Missouri Regional Bomb Squad, who were dispatched to assess the device.

The device was determined to be safe and not a threat after examination. Stanfield says that it was taken into possession by the bomb squad.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route V in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane with an 8-foot width restriction this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.

According to officials, the work zone will be located between County Roads 232 and 234.

Work will take place from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. both today and tomorrow.

ROAD REPAIR PROJECT SET FOR GIDEON AREA THIS WEEK

Route 162 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane this week so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform edge rut repairs. 

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route 153 to County Road 263 near Gideon.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through Thursday.
