NEW MADRID COUNTY DEPUTY TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO HOMICIDE SUSPECT

A New Madrid County Sheriff’s Deputy has been taken into custody in connection to a homicide suspect.

Poplar Bluff Police Chief J.R. Keirsey tells KWOC News that while the Police Department was preparing for a narcotics investigation they were contacted by the US Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force team and advised they had information that a St. Louis homicide suspect may be in the area.

By coincidence the target residence for the homicide suspect was next door to the target residence for one of the narcotic investigations.

Keirsey says the information for the homicide suspect was obtained from a New Madrid County Sheriff’s Deputy who has ties to the Poplar Bluff area. Believing the Deputy was acting in good faith, the Deputy was invited to assist by the US Marshals in the investigation of locating the homicide suspect.

During the course of that investigation, it was learned that the Deputy might have been leaking information from these investigations to friends and family of the homicide suspect and narcotic suspects.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol was contacted to assist in

the investigation and the deputy was arrested. Chief Keirsey says that New Madrid County Sheriff Joey Higgerson took immediate action to relieve the Deputy of their duties pending the investigation.

Sheriff Higgerson tells us that they hold their personnel to the highest level of ethical accountability and if someone can not hold themselves to that standard then there is no place for them in the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department.

The deputy, identified as 49 year old Lakesha Miller, was arrested on charges of hindering prosecution and tampering with evidence.

As part of the narcotics investigation, on Thursday officers with the Poplar Bluff Police Department and agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration concluded a joint investigation resulting in search warrants at Poplar Bluff residences on Mary and Foley Streets.

The searches led officers to seize several pounds of methamphetamine, multiple pounds of marijuana, several thousand dollars in US currency, several thousand dollars in counterfeit currency, multiple firearms, drug paraphernalia and a ballistic vest.

Two individuals have been taken into custody as part of the narcotics investigations.

STATE OFFICIALS ADVISING MOTORISTS TO BE AWARE OF INACCURATE INFORMATION REGARDING VEHICLE REGISTRATIONS THAT IS CIRCULATING

A new year often brings new law changes, but one law that hasn’t changed in Missouri is regarding vehicle registrations.

Officials with the Missouri Department of Revenue tell us that information that is spreading online saying that the state will no longer require vehicle inspections and will expand vehicle registration options allowing drivers to select longer registration periods for vehicles is incorrect.

Missouri law has not changed regarding these issues. Vehicle registration and safety requirements remain unaltered. For clarity, similar proposals have been introduced in recent legislative sessions but never became law.

The officials say that the inaccurate information is most likely generated from artificial intelligence sources.

For resources pertaining to vehicle inspections, titling, and registration, visit the Missouri Department of Revenue’s official website at dor.mo.gov.

INVESTIGATION CONTINUES INTO ELK POACHING CASE IN CARTER COUNTY

An investigation is ongoing in connection to a poaching case in Carter County.

The Missouri Department of Conservation is asking the public for help in finding who illegally shot and left an adult bull elk as waste at Peck Ranch Conservation Area in southern Missouri the night of November 25, 2025.

Agents noted the animal was lying in an open field about 40 yards off of Trail 1 and had a bullet hole in its left shoulder. Tire tracks were also visible entering the field toward the elk, then circling back to the gravel trail and aggressively spinning away from the scene.

Conservation agents say that this was not a case of someone hunting legally and somehow mistaking the elk for a deer.

Missouri’s Operation Game Thief is offering a $15,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the poacher(s) who shot the elk. Call the OGT hotline at 1-800-392-1111 with any information related to this investigation. Callers may remain anonymous.

STATE OFFICIALS URGING MISSOURI RESIDENTS TO TAKE PRECAUTIONS AS FLU CASES SURGE

State officials are urging Missourians to take precautions as flu cases surge across the state.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has recorded over 9,200 laboratory-confirmed influenza cases and 550 flu-related hospitalizations statewide.

Flu activity in Missouri typically begins in October and peaks during the winter months. This season, emergency department visits for influenza-like illness and positive lab tests climbed above baseline levels in the first week of December.

State officials say that the best defense against influenza is annual vaccination. DHSS recommends that everyone aged six months and older receive a flu shot as soon as possible. Vaccination reduces the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and complications, especially for high-risk groups such as seniors, young children and individuals with chronic health conditions.

Also remember to wash your hands frequently, use a tissue or your elbow to cover coughs and sneezes and avoid close contact with sick individuals.

For more information on flu prevention and where to get vaccinated, visit health.mo.gov.

MDC PROPOSES REMOVAL OF CWD MANAGEMENT ZONE

The Missouri Department of Conservation has announced possible changes to simplify regulations for hunters and help keep chronic wasting disease infection rates low.

Officials say that Missouri’s CWD Management Zone consists of counties with confirmed cases of CWD and those within 10 miles of a confirmed detection. The size of the Management Zone has increased over time from the original six counties in 2012 to 82 counties in 2025. Growth in the Zone has led to increased regulatory complexity between counties.

According to MDC, eliminating the CWD Management Zone will simplify related regulations to minimize the impacts of CWD on Missouri’s deer herd. This change would allow mandatory CWD sampling to be conducted in selected counties to detect the disease as early as possible where it exists.

Selected counties would be listed in the annual MDC Fall Deer & Turkey Hunting Regulations and Information booklet that is available starting in July.

Placing feed and minerals for deer would continue to be prohibited in counties with confirmed cases of CWD and those within 10 miles of a CWD detection.

MDC is inviting the public to comment on these proposed regulation changes through February 14th at mdc.mo.gov.
