ADDITIONAL INFORMATION RELEASED CONCERNING SAINT FRANCIS EMPLOYEES IN POPLAR BLUFF AFTER CAMPUS SALE TO MISSOURI HIGHLANDS

Additional information has been released concerning Saint Francis Healthcare employees in Poplar Bluff.

On Thursday, Saint Francis Healthcare System announced it had made the strategic decision to divest its Poplar Bluff campus and ancillary services to Missouri Highlands Health Care, effective December 18th.

According to a Warn Notice issued by Saint Francis, Missouri Highlands will be conducting its own hiring process with respect to the current employees employed at the facility. The notice says that employees will continue to receive regular pay and benefits from Saint Francis Healthcare System through February 16, 2026.

In a post on Facebook, Missouri Highlands Healthcare stated that it will consolidate its existing Poplar Bluff clinics into the new Coppertop facility. Saint Francis patients may choose to become part of the Missouri Highlands Health Care family and current Saint Francis staff will have the opportunity to join their team.

UNITED GOSPEL RESCUE MISSION TO PROVIDE CHRISTMAS MEALS THIS WEEK

Preparations are underway for the United Gospel Rescue Mission’s Christmas Meal this week.

The Rescue Mission in Poplar Bluff will be providing meals on Thursday and is asking for support from the community.

Officials say that they need volunteers to help prepare meals from 9 am to noon in the days leading up to the event. On Christmas Day, the Rescue Mission will also need assistance to prepare, serve, and deliver the meals.

MULTIPLE AREA FIRE DEPARTMENTS APPROVED FOR EQUIPMENT GRANTS

Multiple area fire departments have been approved for up to $15,000 in equipment grants.

The Missouri Department of Public Safety has notified the first 48 volunteer fire departments of their approval for the grants which are available for small departments with annual operating budgets of $50,000 or less.

For the initial grant recipients, the top requested equipment includes radios, hoses and nozzles, firefighter turnout gear, extrication equipment, and self-contained breathing apparatus.

Area departments receiving funding include Grandin, Portageville, Ripley County, and Van Buren.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN KILLED IN THREE VEHICLE CRASH

Authorities have released details about a fatal crash from last week in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Arkansas State Police, the crash occurred Thursday afternoon on US Highway 62 in Clay County. A vehicle crossed the center line of the highway and struck a second vehicle. Both vehicles were then struck by a third vehicle.

The driver of the first vehicle, identified as 34 year old Joseph Blurton, of Wardell, was killed in the crash.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 26 year old woman from Paragould, was injured and transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE PROJECT SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route 114 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route 153 to Route AH near Grayridge.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through 4 p.m.

FOUR MONTH BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT SET TO BEGIN TODAY

Route Z in Dunklin County will be closed ver several months so contractor crews can perform a bridge replacement over the Main Ditch District near Kennett.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the bridge involved in the project is located between Route 412 and County Road 500.

Weather permitting, work will begin this morning with completion anticipated by Thursday, April 30. Officials say the road will remain closed until the work is completed.

ONE KILLED, FOUR INJURED, IN CARTER COUNTY CRASH

One person has died following a crash Wednesday evening in Carter County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at around 5:20 pm on Highway 60, one mile west of Ellsinore, when a vehicle made a left turn into the path of another vehicle.

A passenger in the first vehicle, identified as a 45 year old male from Alton, was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the first vehicle suffered serious injuries in the crash. The driver and two passengers in the second vehicle received moderate or minor injuries. All four injured people were also transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

DEADLINE APPROACHING TO APPLY FOR INDIVIDUAL ASSISTANCE IN CONNECTION TO STORMS IN LATE MARCH AND EARLY APRIL

Time is running out for southeast Missouri residents to apply for Individual Assistance in 20 counties in connection to the severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding from March 30 through April 8.

Counties include Butler, Carter, Dunklin, New Madrid, Ripley, Stoddard, and Wayne, among others.

Individuals may seek federal assistance for qualifying disaster-related expenses – including housing repairs, temporary housing, rental assistance, medical and funeral costs not covered by insurance or other aid programs, and replacement of damaged belongings and vehicles.

Individuals who sustained damage or losses not covered by insurance due to the March 30 to April 8 severe weather may apply for FEMA disaster assistance online at disasterassistance.gov or by calling FEMA’s toll-free application line at 1-800-621-3362. You can also download the FEMA app to apply.

The deadline to apply for assistance in Missouri is December 22nd.

MISSOURI HIGHLANDS HEALTH CARE TO BE COLLECTING CANNED FOODS FOR AREA FOOD PANTRIES TODAY

A local organization will be out today, collecting food for area residents.

Missouri Highlands Health Care will be taking donations of canned foods today from 11 am to 2 pm at the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Poplar Bluff for their Highlands Holiday Haul.

Donations will be donated to local food pantries to help families in our area.

MAN SENTENCED TO OVER THREE DECADES IN PRISON ON CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND METH CHARGES

A man has been sentenced to over three decades in prison for multiple charges.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 37 year old Rayshaun Reed, pleaded guilty in July to three felonies: possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine, sexual exploitation of a minor, and possession of child pornography.

The victim’s parents triggered the investigation by contacting the Hayti Police Department with concerns about Reed. Officers conducted a court-approved search of Reed’s motel room and found six bags of meth totaling about 25 grams in weight, three bags of marijuana totaling about 22 grams, and a bag of "K2" synthetic marijuana.

His phone also contained at least 16 videos depicting child sexual abuse material that had been downloaded from the internet.

Reed was on supervised release at the time of his crimes, having previously been convicted of distribution of methamphetamine. He was sentenced to 36 months for violating his supervised release and a total of 30 years for his new crimes.

CLAY COUNTY BRIDGE CLOSED FOR REPAIRS

Officials in Northeast Arkansas say that a local bridge will be closed for over a month.

According to the Clay County Office of Emergency Management, the Payne Creek Bridge, located south of Greenway on Clay County Road 481 has been closed due to necessary repairs.

Officials say that the project is expected to be completed by February 1st.

16 women’s basketball teams will be descending on Broseley beginning today for the Annual Lady Royals Christmas Classic.

The 28th annual tournament starts this afternoon at Twin Rivers High School and is scheduled to run through December 23rd.

There are four first round matchups set for today including Kennett vs. Hayti at 4:30 pm, New Madrid vs. Naylor at 5:45, Portageville vs. Piggott at 7 pm, and Twin Rivers vs. Campbell at 8:15 pm.

AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING HOMICIDE IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Authorities in Southeast Missouri are investigating a homicide.

According to Charleston Department of Public Safety Director Robert Hearnes, at around 1 am Wednesday morning, reports came in of gun shots in the 300 block of Oliver Street and that someone had been shot.

At the scene, officers found a male with a gunshot wound. The subject, identified as 29 year old Rontavious Clark, of Charleston, was transported from the scene by ambulances, but later died.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to call the Charleston Department of Public Safety at 573-683-3737.

DATES SET FOR NEXT YEAR’S HUNTING SEASONS IN MISSOURI

The Missouri Department of Conservation has set the dates for the 2026 turkey and deer hunting seasons.

The regular spring season for turkeys will be April 20th to May 10th and the fall firearms season will be October 1st to October 31st.

For deer, the November firearms portion will run from November 14th to 24th. The antlerless portions will be held from October 9th to 11th and December 5th to December 13th.

FORMER STATE TROOPER PLEADS GUILTY TO ILLEGALLY SEARCHING WOMEN’S PHONES TO FIND NUDE PICTURES

A former state trooper will be sentenced in March after admitting to searching women’s cell phones during traffic stops to find nude pictures.

According to the United States Attorney's Office, 40 year old David McKnight has pleaded guilty to nine counts of deprivation of rights under color of law.

He admitted to unlawfully searching and seizing photographs from the cell phones of seven women and unlawfully searching the phones of two more women from September of 2023 to July of 2024, while on duty, in uniform, and traveling in a marked Missouri State Highway Patrol vehicle.

McKnight searched their phones without a warrant or probable cause to find nude images of the victims or their loved ones and then used his own cell phone to take photographs of some of the images he found.

After two victims became suspicious of his actions, they reported him to the MSHP. Forensic analysis revealed that McKnight had searched through their phones going into folders that contained nude photographs of them. Subsequent investigation revealed evidence of the other victims.

His sentencing is scheduled for March 24th.

DRAINAGE WORK SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TODAY IN RISCO AREA

Route 62 in New Madrid County will be reduced through the end of the year as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform drainage work. 

Officials say the work zone is located from County Road 527 to County Road 529 near Risco.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily through Friday, January 2.

CULVERT REPLACEMENT TO FORCE CLOSURE OF ROUTE W IN BUTLER COUNTY LATER THIS MONTH

Route W in Butler County will be closed later this month so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace a culvert under the roadway.

According to MoDOT officials, Route W will be closed between County Road 542 and Route O on Monday, December 29th.

The next day, crews will be closing Route W between Route O and Route KK.

Work will take place each day from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. While work is underway, the road will be open to local traffic only.

MDC ANNOUNCES REGULATION CHANGES FOR SPRING TURKEY HUNTING

The Missouri Department of Conservation has announced regulation changes to spring turkey hunting.

Officials say that the new regulations will reduce the nonresident harvest limit from two bearded turkeys to one. Nonresident landowners will maintain a harvest limit of two bearded birds with only one allowed to be harvested during the first seven days of the season.

Regulation changes will also now allow youth hunters who are successful during the youth season to harvest their second bird during the first week of the regular season. Currently youth turkey hunters who are successful during the youth season may not harvest a second bird until the second week of the regular season.

The regulation changes were approved by the Missouri Conservation Commission at its recent open meeting in Jefferson City and will be effective for the 2026 spring turkey season.

TWO FLOWN TO MEMPHIS HOSPITAL FOLLOWING CRASH IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Two people were injured in a crash Tuesday afternoon in Dunklin County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly after noon when a vehicle crossed the center of US Highway 412 and struck another vehicle.

The driver of the first vehicle and a passenger in the second vehicle both suffered serious injuries in the crash and were flown to a Memphis hospital.

INVESTIGATION LEADS TO ARREST OF DONIPHAN MAN ON MULTIPLE CHARGES

A Doniphan man has been taken into custody in connection to an investigation into a child sex crime.

According to Missouri Case Net, 26 year old Lantz Crawford is facing five counts of statutory sodomy, four counts of sexual exploitation of a minor child, three counts of sexual misconduct involving a child under 15, and a single count of 2nd degree child molestation.

The charges stem from incidents that allegedly occurred within the past five months.

Crawford is scheduled to appear in a Doniphan courtroom on Wednesday.

STODDARD COUNTY OFFICIALS WARNING RESIDENTS ABOUT ILLEGAL SUBSTANCE BEING SOLD

Officials in Stoddard County are warning area residents about an illegal substance in the community.

According to Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Sawyer Smith, a liquid product that is referred to as “Octane,” contains a Schedule 1 controlled substance.

Smith says that they have information that the product is currently marketed by a short list of local retailers.

To avoid legal consequences, no one should possess, distribute, deliver, or otherwise participate in the sale or exchange of this product.

CREWS TO BE WORKING NEAR ROUTE 60 IN STODDARD COUNTY OVER THE NEXT WEEK

Westbound Route 60 will be receiving ditch repairs over the next week in Stoddard County.

Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation say that work will be performed off the roadway, but motorists should be advised of crews working in the area.

The work zone will be located from Route AD to Route F near Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily through December 24.

FIRST ROUND MATCHUPS SET FOR 38TH ANNUAL POPLAR BLUFF SHOWDOWN

The first round matchups have been set for the 38th Annual Poplar Bluff Showdown.

The three day tournament will start on Monday, December 29th at Poplar Bluff High School.

The first round will see Memphis Central take on Maumelle at 4 pm, followed by First Assembly Christian vs. Urbana at 5:30 pm, Poplar Bluff hosting Kirby at 7 pm, and the day will finish with Link Academy vs. Jonesboro at 8:30 pm.

Every game of the 38th Annual Poplar Bluff Showdown will be broadcast live on the KWOC Facebook Page and River Radio PB Youtube page.

TWO PEOPLE INJURED IN CRASH SOUTH OF POPLAR BLUFF

Two people were injured in a crash Friday night near Poplar Bluff.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly before 10 pm, half a mile south of Poplar Bluff, when a vehicle ran off the left side of South Westwood Boulevard, overturned, and struck a pole.

A passenger in the vehicle, identified as a 32 year old woman from Poplar Bluff, suffered serious injuries in the crash. The driver, a 32 year old Poplar Bluff man, received minor injuries.

Both were transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

MDC PROPOSES REMOVAL OF CWD MANAGEMENT ZONE

The Missouri Department of Conservation has announced possible changes to simplify regulations for hunters and help keep chronic wasting disease infection rates low.

Officials say that Missouri’s CWD Management Zone consists of counties with confirmed cases of CWD and those within 10 miles of a confirmed detection. The size of the Management Zone has increased over time from the original six counties in 2012 to 82 counties in 2025. Growth in the Zone has led to increased regulatory complexity between counties.

According to MDC, eliminating the CWD Management Zone will simplify related regulations to minimize the impacts of CWD on Missouri’s deer herd. This change would allow mandatory CWD sampling to be conducted in selected counties to detect the disease as early as possible where it exists.

Selected counties would be listed in the annual MDC Fall Deer & Turkey Hunting Regulations and Information booklet that is available starting in July.

Placing feed and minerals for deer would continue to be prohibited in counties with confirmed cases of CWD and those within 10 miles of a CWD detection.

MDC is inviting the public to comment on these proposed regulation changes through February 14th at mdc.mo.gov.

OVER 7,000 GRAMS OF METH SEIZED THIS YEAR IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Dunklin County Sheriff Nick Darter is commending the results of SEMO Drug Task Force in fighting illegal drugs in the county.

Darter says that over the past 11 months, an assigned Dunklin County deputy, working alongside fellow Task Force officers, has conducted extensive investigations to combat illegal drug activity and protect public safety.

Darter added that these efforts have led to the disruption of major narcotics operations and the removal of dangerous drugs from the community, including over 7,000 grams of methamphetamine and over 1,000 grams of marijuana being seized.

The operations have also resulted in 12 arrests for federal indictments.

NEW TOOL AVAILABLE IN BUTLER COUNTY TO HELP COMBAT NOTARY FRAUD

A new tool is available in Butler County to help prevent notary fraud.

According to Butler County Recorder Debby Lundstrum, the Notary Fraud Alert program is a free, easy-to-use service that allows notaries to monitor activity under their name and quickly detect signs of misuse.

Once enrolled, notaries can choose to receive daily, weekly, or monthly alerts whenever a document is recorded in Butler County that includes their name as the notary. Each alert includes the document number, type, and parties involved, making it easy to identify suspicious filings at a glance.

Lundstrum says the service is offered at no cost and is part of her office’s ongoing commitment to supporting local notaries while strengthening trust in the public recordkeeping systems.

DEADLINE APPROACHING TO PAY YOUR PROPERTY TAX

The new year is approaching fast, which means that it is time to pay your personal property tax.

Butler County Collector Emily Parks tells KWOC News that the Collector’s office will be open on weekdays from 8 am to 4 pm through the end of the year, except for December 24th through 26th.

After hours, residents can also pay at the drop box on the east side of the Butler County Courthouse as well as at the Poplar Bluff Police Station.

You can also pay your property tax online at ButlerCountyMO.com.

Parks says that interest and penalties are added to the amount due at the beginning of each month for anyone who misses the December 31st deadline.

If you are paying by mail, it must be postmarked by December 31 to avoid penalties. Parks says that the best way to ensure that is the case is to take your mail inside your local post office and ask the clerk to hand-stamp your envelope. If you drop it in the mailbox, it does not guarantee that it will be postmarked in time.

CHRISTMAS CAROLERS FROM POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOLS TO VISIT LOCAL BUSINESSES ON TUESDAY

Poplar Bluff student carolers will be visiting area businesses and spreading holiday cheer on Tuesday.

According to Suzy Abney, singers with the Poplar Bluff Junior High Choir will be starting at around 8 am Tuesday at the Poplar Bluff Middle School.

Their tour of the town will include stops at multiple nursing homes, the Poplar Bluff Library, area restaurants like Castellos and Bread and Butter, and more.

ONE FLOWN TO MEMPHIS HOSPITAL FOLLOWING HEAD ON COLLISION NEAR PUXICO

Three people were injured in a crash Friday morning near Puxico.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at around 7 am on Missouri Highway 51 when a vehicle struck another vehicle head-on.

The driver of the second vehicle, identified as a 31 year old Puxico woman, was flown to a Memphis hospital with serious injuries.

Two passengers in the second vehicle were transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital with minor injuries.

TONYA HILLHOUSE APPOINTED AS PEMISCOT COUNTY CIRCUIT CLERK

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has announced his latest gubernatorial appointments.

In Southeast Missouri, Kehoe tells KWOC News that Tonya Hillhouse has been appointed as the Pemiscot County Circuit Clerk.

Hillhouse previously served as a court clerk for the Pemiscot County Circuit Clerk's Office.

She has over 25 years of government experience, and has also served as a clerical assistant and caseworker for the Missouri Department of Social Services.

MENARDS HOSTING TOY DRIVE TO BENEFIT LOCAL CHILDREN

A Poplar Bluff area business is accepting toy donations to be given to local children.

The Poplar Bluff Menards is serving as a drop off location for toy donations and today is the final day that donations can be made.

You can drop off new, unwrapped toys in the donation box by the Menards exit door. The toys will then be donated to a local organization.

WIND CHILL VALUES EXPECTED TO GET NEAR ZERO OVERNIGHT THIS WEEKEND

Temperatures are expected to plunge this weekend as we get closer to the official start of winter.

According to a Hazardous Weather Outlook from the National Weather Service, a brief period of dangerously cold conditions can be expected Saturday night into Sunday.

Wind chills Saturday night are expected to be near zero with overnight lows approaching single digits possible Saturday and Sunday night.

In Poplar Bluff, highs are expected to be in the low 40s on Saturday and mid 20s on Sunday.

MAN SENTENCED TO THREE DECADES IN PRISON FOR NURSING HOME MURDER

A man is facing multiple decades in prison in connection to a homicide at a Southeast Missouri nursing home.

Dunklin County Prosecuting Attorney Nicholas Jain tells KWOC News that 30 year old Christian Ault has been sentenced to thirty years in the Missouri Department of Corrections for the July 2024 murder of Jeffery Pendergrass in Senath.

According to Jain, on July 13, 2024, Ault struck the victim in the head multiple times with a toilet tank lid at a nursing home where they were both residents.

Pendergrass was airlifted to a Jonesboro hospital where he died the next week.

Jain says Ault pled guilty to a charge of 2nd degree murder and received the maximum possible 30 year sentence.

POPLAR BLUFF BUSINESS TO GIVE AWAY NEW VEHICLE THIS WEEKEND

A Poplar Bluff business will be giving away a new vehicle this weekend.

Heartland Express in Poplar Bluff will be drawing the winner of a new 2025 Jeep Gladiator Saturday afternoon.

In addition to the giveaway, Santa will be at Heartland Express as well to take pictures with families who attend.

MAN ARRAIGNED IN CONNECTION TO STABBING

A Kennett man was arraigned this week on multiple charges in connection to a stabbing.

According to a probable cause affidavit, on Monday, Kennett officers were dispatched for a report that a man had been stabbed in the throat and had his car stolen.

The victim told police that he was giving Phillip Holloway a ride when Holloway stabbed him.

The victim was transported to a Paragould hospital for medical treatment.

Holloway was later arrested on charges of felony 1st degree assault, three counts of armed criminal action, and two counts of 1st degree robbery.

His bond was set at $135,000, cash only.

WARMING CENTERS TO OPEN IN BUTLER COUNTY TO PROVIDE SHELTER FROM THE COLD

With temperatures expected to get well below freezing overnight this weekend, area organizations are opening their doors to serve as warming centers.

In Butler County, the Bread Shed will be acting as an overnight warming center from 7 pm to 7 am when the temperatures get below 20 degrees.

The Butler County Health Department and Poplar Bluff Library will serve as warming centers during the daytime hours when those locations are open.

The United Gospel Rescue Mission in Poplar Bluff is also open at night for men who need a place to stay during the cold weather.

Holiday cheer will be in the air tonight at a special event in downtown Poplar Bluff.

Missouri Highlands Health Care will be presenting Holiday Magic at Rodgers Theatre.

The event will begin with outdoor fun at 5 pm, featuring a synthetic snowball fight as well as free hot chocolate for the first 100 guests.

At 6:30, the event will move inside the Rodgers Theater for a free showing of the movie Elf: Buddy’s Sing and Cheer Along Edition.

SOUNDS OF CHRISTMAS AT THE PALACE OF PRAISE BEGINS THIS WEEKEND

A Poplar Bluff church’s annual Christmas themed play begins this weekend.

The Palace of Praise is presenting the 15th Annual Sounds of Christmas nightly from December 14th through the 17th beginning at 7 pm each night.

Admission to the show is free, but you can also purchase tickets for a dinner theater experience for the Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday night performances.

TIPS FOR GOING OUTSIDE IN COLDER WEATHER

With below freezing temperatures coming this weekend, the CDC is reminding people to be safe if they have to go outside.

Officials say that you should try to stay indoors during extremely cold weather and any trips that you do make outside should be as brief as possible.

If you do go outside, you should try to wear several layers of loose-fitting clothing, a hat, a scarf or knit mask to cover your face and mouth, sleeves that are snug at the wrist, and mittens or gloves.

Also do your best to stay dry, as wet clothing chills the body quickly.

Make sure to watch for hypothermia as well. In adults, warning signs of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion or feeling very tired, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech, and drowsiness. In babies, signs include bright red, cold skin, and very low energy.

JUVENILE FLOWN TO HOSPITAL FOLLOWING FIRE IN CAMPBELL

A juvenile was flown to an area hospital following a fire in Campbell.

According to the Campbell Volunteer Fire Department, Tuesday afternoon crews responded to a motorhome that was on fire behind a local business. At the scene, the owner advised that there was a juvenile and a dog trapped inside.

Firefighters were able to make entry into the structure and extricate the juvenile, who was taken to a nearby business so crews could provide first aid while waiting on an ambulance.

The juvenile was later flown to a Memphis hospital for treatment.

Officials say that the dog did not survive the fire.

The incident was investigated by Missouri State Fire Marshals Office investigators and no foul play is suspected.

OVER 300,000 SIGNATURES SUBMITTED TO FORCE A STATEWIDE VOTE ON MISSOURI REDISTRICTING

Opponents of Missouri's new congressional map submitted thousands of petition signatures Tuesday calling for a statewide vote on a redistricting plan backed by President Donald Trump as part of his quest to hold on to a slim Republican majority in next year's elections.

Organizers of the petition drive said they turned in more than 300,000 signatures to the secretary of state's office — well over the roughly 110,000 needed to suspend the new U.S. House districts from taking effect until a referendum election can be held next year.

The signatures still need to be verified by election authorities and Republican Secretary of State Denny Hoskins, who could declare the referendum petition unconstitutional. A legal fight appears likely.

A referendum could create a significant obstacle for Republicans, who hope the new districts could help them win a currently Democratic-held seat in the Kansas City area.

Republican Attorney General Catherine Hanaway issued a statement saying the new House districts took effect Tuesday and will remain in place unless Hoskins determines the referendum petition is constitutional and contains sufficient signatures. Petition sponsors said the new districts were immediately suspended when they submitted signatures, which is how the secretary of state's office handled things during Missouri's most recent referendum petition in 2017.

Hoskins promised a “slow and steady” review of the signatures, which must equal 5% of the votes cast in the last gubernatorial election in at least six of the state’s eight congressional districts. Missouri has more than 6 million residents. Hoskins said election authorities have until July 28 to finish the verification process, and he isn't likely to determine the measure's constitutionality until that's done.

“I’m going to do everything I can to protect Gov. (Mike) Kehoe’s Missouri First Map — the map the General Assembly passed,” Hoskins told The Associated Press.

That raises the prospect that Missouri congressional candidates might not know with certainty the makeup of their districts when they file for office between Feb. 24 and March 31. A similar scenario existed in 2022, when the governor approved congressional districts based on the census 50 days after candidate filing ended.

Referendum votes in Missouri are automatically set for the upcoming November election, unless lawmakers approve an earlier date. Referendum backers said they are confident they will clear any legal hurdles to holding an election.

SEVERAL PRESCRIBED FIRES ANNOUNCED FOR NEXT FEW MONTHS IN OZARK NATIONAL SCENIC RIVERWAYS

Several prescribed fires will be conducted over the next few months in Southeast Missouri.

Officials with Ozark National Scenic Riverways tell KWOC News that preparations are being made to accomplish several prescribed fires between mid-December and the end of March 2026.

At least six locations have been announced for the fires, with scheduling dependent on weather and vegetation meeting certain conditions.

During prescribed fires, park operations will continue as usual, although temporary closure of trails or roads adjacent to the burn units may be necessary for visitor safety.

Prescribed burning has a variety of purposes, including the reduction of fuel accumulations near developed areas, which helps reduce the threat of unplanned wildland fires in and around Ozark National Scenic Riverways.

AREA LAW ENFORCEMENT PARTICIPATING IN DRIVE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER CAMPAIGN

Area law enforcement agencies are reminding everyone to not drink and drive while celebrating the holidays.

Law enforcement agencies across Missouri and Arkansas are participating in a Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement period beginning Friday and continuing through January 1st.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1,038 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes that involved an alcohol-impaired driver in December of 2023.

Plan ahead if you intend to drink while celebrating the holidays. Drivers should secure a designated sober driver or call a taxi or rideshare for a sober ride home.

NEW TOOL WILL HELP MISSOURI RESIDENTS FIND HOMES THAT ARE SMOKE FREE

Missouri state officials have unveiled a new tool to help residents find homes that are smoke free.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, in partnership with the American Lung Association in Missouri, has launched the Missouri Smoke-Free Housing Directory.

Officials say that smoke-free housing protects residents from secondhand smoke and vape aerosol, reduces fire risk and supports people in their efforts to quit. Missouri has one of the highest smoking rates in the nation, and over half of Missourians who smoke try to quit each year.

Property owners and managers are invited to list their smoke-free properties in the directory at no charge.

STODDARD COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR CULVERT REPLACEMENT

Route T in Stoddard County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

DEADLINE APPROACHING TO APPLY FOR INDIVIDUAL ASSISTANCE IN CONNECTION TO STORMS IN LATE MARCH AND EARLY APRIL

Time is running out for southeast Missouri residents to apply for Individual Assistance in 20 counties in connection to the severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding from March 30 through April 8.

Counties include Butler, Carter, Dunklin, New Madrid, Ripley, Stoddard, and Wayne, among others.

Individuals may seek federal assistance for qualifying disaster-related expenses – including housing repairs, temporary housing, rental assistance, medical and funeral costs not covered by insurance or other aid programs, and replacement of damaged belongings and vehicles.

Individuals who sustained damage or losses not covered by insurance due to the March 30 to April 8 severe weather may apply for FEMA disaster assistance online at disasterassistance.gov or by calling FEMA’s toll-free application line at 1-800-621-3362. You can also download the FEMA app to apply.

The deadline to apply for assistance in Missouri is December 22nd.

DRA ANNOUNCES INVESTMENTS FOR MULTIPLE SOUTHEAST MISSOURI COMMUNITIES

The Delta Regional Authority, in collaboration with the state of Missouri, has announced the investment of approximately $4.2 million toward 10 projects in Missouri, including four in southeast Missouri.

The Boys and Girls Club of the Heartland in Poplar Bluff was awarded $509,000 for construction of a workforce development center. The city of Dexter was awarded nearly $404,000 to install a state-of-the art radar station.

The city of Portageville was awarded more than $388,000 to make improvements to its water system infrastructure. Ellington was also awarded $509,000 to improve the city’s water system infrastructure by installing a new water well.

WOMAN FACING MULTIPLE COUNTS OF DOMESTIC BATTERING AFTER ALLEGATIONS OF HABITUAL ABUSE

A Paragould woman has been taken into custody after minors that were in her care disclosed habitual abuse.

According to Paragould authorities, in September, 63 year old Kimberly Contos was arrested for domestic battering 3rd degree on a minor.

After the arrest, all other minors were removed from her care.

During follow up interviews with the other minors, they reportedly disclosed habitual abuse over multiple years by Contos.

During an interview, Contos also allegedly made incriminating statements.

She was booked into the Greene County Jail this week on seven counts of felony 2nd degree domestic battering and seven counts of misdemeanor 2nd degree endangering the welfare of a child.

POPLAR BLUFF CITY MANAGER ROBERT KNODELL TAKES PERIOD OF LEAVE FROM POSITION

The Poplar Bluff City Manager has announced that he will be taking a period of leave from the position for medical and personal reasons.

In a statement released Monday, Robert Knodell says that he was recently charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

He added that he deeply regrets the lapse in judgment and is apologizing to his family, friends, neighbors, the City of Poplar Bluff, and to anyone he may have put at risk.

He also is asking for privacy and space for his family and himself during this time.

Poplar Bluff Mayor Shane Cornman says that Knodell has taken responsibility for his actions and has sought medical treatment. Cornman added that they hired Robert because of his extensive experience, strong relationships, and deep love for Poplar Bluff. None of that has changed. He looks forward to supporting Knodell in his recovery and successful completion of his treatment.

The Poplar Bluff City Council will be meeting in a special closed session at noon on Wednesday.

FILING TO BEGIN TODAY FOR APRIL ELECTIONS

Filing will begin today for the upcoming Poplar Bluff City Council elections.

The city will be holding elections on April 7th for three seats on the City Council, one representative from Ward Five and two at-large seats. The elections will be for three year terms.

Candidates can begin filing for the election today. The final day for candidate filing will be December 30th.

Weather officials are predicting wind chill values to get into the lower single digits later this week, so now is the time to make sure that your home is prepared.

Extreme cold can cause water pipes in your home to freeze and sometimes rupture or break.

When you are expecting very cold or freezing temperatures leave all water taps slightly open so they drip continuously, keep the temperature inside your home warm, and open cabinet doors beneath the kitchen and bathroom sinks to allow heated air to reach pipes.

Use fireplaces, wood stoves, or other combustion heaters only if they are properly vented to the outside and do not leak gas from the flue or exhaust into the indoor air space.

Use electric space heaters with automatic shut-off switches and non-glowing elements. Make sure to keep them away from any flammable materials, like curtains or blankets.

MOTORCYCLE RIDER INJURED DURING WEEKEND CRASH IN WAPPAPELLO

One man was injured during a crash over the weekend in Wappapello.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a motorcycle was struck from behind by an unknown vehicle shortly before 7:30 pm Saturday night on Highway D. The motorcycle then ran off the roadway and the driver was ejected.

The driver, identified as a 48 year old Wappapello man, was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital with serious injuries.

ROAD PROJECT SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route 153 in Stoddard County will be reduced today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform drainage work. 

Officials say that the work zone will be located from Route Z to County Road 780.

Work is scheduled to take place today from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

DRAINAGE WORK TO CAUSE DELAYS THIS MONTH ON ROUTE J IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Route J in Dunklin County will be reduced for almost two weeks as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform drainage work. 

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route H North to County Road 109.

ONE DEAD AFTER SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

One person has died after a single vehicle crash Friday morning in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 35 year old Hayti woman was driving on Missouri Highway A in Pemiscot County when her vehicle ran off the side of the roadway and struck a bridge.

The crash happened shortly before 7 am Friday, half a mile south of Wardell.

Officials say the driver was pronounced dead at the scene by assistant Pemiscot County Coroner Jesse Cagle.

Wreaths will be placed on the graves of veterans this weekend.

On December 13th the Poplar Bluff Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, in cooperation with Wreaths Across America, will hold a ceremony at the Poplar Bluff Memorial Gardens Cemetery to honor veterans buried there.

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11 am.

Everyone is invited to attend the ceremony, which will be followed by the placing of wreaths on veteran’s graves.

WINTER DRAWDOWN SCHEDULED AT WAPPAPELLO LAKE

The date has been announced for the annual winter drawdown at Wappapello Lake.

According to the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the drawdown from recreation pool to conservation pool will begin on December 15th.

Officials say the lake level is drawn down five feet, from 359.74 feet to 354.74 feet, which allows for additional storage of winter and spring precipitation.

During the conservation pool, boaters are urged to use caution when on the lake as mud flats and tree stumps may be exposed or be just under the water surface.

Near the beginning of April next year, the lake level will be gradually allowed to rise until the recreation pool is reached in early May.

MULTIWEEK SHOULDER REPAIR PROJECT BEGINS TODAY IN DEXTER

Route 25 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane for several weeks as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform shoulder repairs.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Stoddard Street to King Street in Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m daily through Friday, January 2.

CONTRACTS AWARDED FOR ROAD PROJECTS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission has awarded contracts for various road projects in Southeast Missouri.

According to officials, an over 3.7 million dollar contract was awarded to Joe’s Bridge and Grading, for bridge replacements on Route 142 and Route W in Ripley County.

Also in Ripley County, a 5.1 million dollar contract was awarded to Pace Construction Company, for pavement and bridge resurfacing on Route 160 from south of Route 21 to Route JJ.

A $369,000 contract was also awarded to Pace Construction Company, for pavement resurfacing on Route J from Route 62 to Route 153 in New Madrid County.

Additional information about the projects, including a timeline and what impacts there will be to traffic, will be released prior to the start of construction.

RIVER RADIO LIGHTED CHRISTMAS PARADE IS TONIGHT

Christmas lights will be shining bright tonight in Downtown Poplar Bluff.

The 2025 River Radio Lighted Christmas Parade is scheduled to begin at 6 pm with line up starting at 4:30 pm at the Sky High Fun Zone parking lot.

The parade route this year will run from Highway 53 at McDonalds, north along Ditch Road into Downtown Poplar Bluff, then east on Vine Street, before circling back on Main Street.

Right before the parade, the lighting of the Community Christmas Tree will be held in front of the Black River Coliseum.

RICOCHET TO HEADLINE 2026 VALENTIES FOR VETERANS CONCERT

The artists have been announced for the 2026 Valentines for Veterans concert in Poplar Bluff.

According to the Wake Foundation, the concert, featuring legendary country group Ricochet and Billy Yates, will be held on Thursday, February 12th at the Black River Coliseum.

Today is the final day for Poplar Bluff residents to purchase tags for this month’s Bulky Item Pickup.

Residents can purchase bulk item tags from the City Collector’s office at City Hall for $20. The tags entitle you to the removal of four bulk items, such as couches or refrigerators.

No construction materials or small items will be picked up and the program is for residential areas only.

Today is the final day to purchase item tags at City Hall to be included in next week’s pick up, which will be conducted on Tuesday, December 9th.

REMAINS FOUND IN RIPLEY COUNTY IDENTIFIED AS MISSING MAN

Remains found last month in Ripley County have been identified as a missing man.

Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that human remains were found November 4th on private property in rural Ripley County.

An autopsy was performed which led to the remains being identified as 53 year old Jerry B. Hale, who was reported missing in August of 2019.

Parrott says that an investigation into the death is active and on-going. The investigation is being conducted by the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, the Ripley County Coroner’s Office, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol - Division of Drug and Crime Control.

MAN SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS IN PRISON FOR SHOOTING AT A STODDARD COUNTY DEPUTY

A man has been sentenced for shooting at a Stoddard County Sheriff’s Deputy last Christmas.

According to Missouri Case Net, Steven Parks, of Dexter, pled guilty in October to charges of assault 1st degree, unlawful use of a weapon, and armed criminal action.

Parks had shot at an officer on Christmas Day in 2024 after calling 911 and saying he wanted to die by suicide by cop. He surrendered to officers a short time later.

Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Sawyer Smith says that Parks received a 20-year sentence for the assault charge, a concurrent 15-year sentence for the weapon charge, and a consecutive 5-year sentence for the armed criminal action charge, amounting to a 25-year period of incarceration.

MAN CHARGED WITH SEXUAL ASSAULT FOR ALLEGEDLY GROPING VICTIM

A man has been charged with sexual assault for allegedly groping a victim.

According to a warrant affidavit, 34 year old Thomas Huffman, of Paragould, is accused of forcibly groping the breast of the victim twice in October. During a later interview, Huffman corroborated the victim’s statement.

Huffman was booked into the Greene County Jail on Monday on a charge of sexual assault 2nd degree. His bond was set at $25,000.

MODOT ANNOUNCES BRIDGE PROJECTS IN WAYNE COUNTY

The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced plans for multiple bridge projects in Wayne County.

MoDOT plans to rehabilitate the Route A bridge over Otter Creek, located south of County Road 430 as well as replace the Route A bridge over Small Creek, between County Roads 371 and 400.

Officials say that work could begin as early as Winter 2026-27.

During construction, the roadway will be closed in the vicinity of each bridge for approximately two months, weather permitting. Construction schedules will be coordinated to avoid closing the bridges simultaneously.

DONIPHAN WOMAN ARRESTED ON DELIVERY OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WARRANT

A Doniphan woman was arrested this week on a drug warrant.

According to a probable cause affidavit, an informant allegedly purchased three and a half grams of methamphetamine from 60 year old Mary Yount in connection to an undercover narcotics investigation from earlier this year.

According to the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, Yount was arrested on Tuesday at her residence on a warrant for delivery of a controlled substance.

She was held at the Ripley County Jail on a $50,000 bond.

CULVERT REPLACEMENT SET FOR TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route V in Stoddard County will be closed today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace a culvert under the roadway.

The section of roadway being closed is located between County Roads 234 and 232 near Sturdivant.

A board established to help chart the future of the downtown area of Poplar Bluff is no more, as city officials reorganize efforts for the future.

The nine member Downtown Poplar Bluff, Inc Advisory Board voted unanimously Tuesday afternoon to dissolve, with remaining funds going towards expanding the Farmer’s Market.

KWOC News spoke with Poplar Bluff City Manager Robert Knodell about what this means for the future of Poplar Bluff and the downtown region.

“ Yesterday, a meeting of the downtown Poplar Bluff Advisory Board made a decision to dissolve downtown Poplar Bluff Incorporated. And we will see efforts as it relates to downtown redevelopment, the promotion of what we all consider to be a treasure jewel of our community, which is our downtown area, and we wanna see it preserved and revitalized.

That that effort will continue. And certainly the events that people here locally and across the region have come to love, that bring people together. Downtown will continue and you'll see holiday celebrations this weekend and throughout the holidays and efforts. While structures and governance may change, the focus will not change.

And certainly the city is committed to doing everything that it can to strengthen, promote, and to grow our downtown core. Though structure and governance may change. You know, I think it's worth recognizing Steve Halter and Morgan McIntosh at the Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce and Morgan's longstanding involvement in downtown development.

Though they may not be formally wearing those hats in the future, with some of the changes, they certainly deserve our gratitude and appreciation for the incredible work that's gone on to promote our city. Are downtown and culturally architecturally, receiving grants and funding for projects, structures, attractions, and events that would not have taken place and would not exist without their help.

And they're still going to be involved and they're still from the purview of the Chamber of Commerce going to be promoting downtown Poplar Bluff just in different ways, and as a new format takes shape.”

AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING IN BUTLER COUNTY

The Butler County Sheriff’s Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol are investigating an incident where shots were fired early Tuesday morning in Neelyville.

According to Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs, at around 2:30 am, officers were dispatched to old 67 Highway in Neelyville where they were confronted with an armed suspect inside the house.

The suspect had a knife to the throat of the reporting party. Dobbs says that shots were fired by the officers and the suspect used the victim as a human shield.

The suspect, identified as 26 year old Jordion Bell, of Neelyville, was struck several times and transported to a Memphis area hospital.

The victim was transported from the scene by EMS for injuries that appeared to be non-life-threatening.

CLARKTON MAN APPEARS IN COURT TO FACE STATUTORY RAPE CHARGE

A Clarkton man had his initial court appearance Tuesday after being charged with statutory rape.

According to a probable cause affidavit, 23 year old Daryus Reed is accused of having inappropriate contact with a juvenile.

The affidavit says that the victim had been reported as a missing juvenile out of Poplar Bluff and was found at a residence with Reed.

Reed has been charged with felony statutory rape - 2nd degree and endangering the welfare of a child - creating substantial risk - 1st degree.

TRAIN DERAILS TUESDAY MORNING NEAR CAMPBELL

A train derailed early Tuesday morning in the Missouri Bootheel.

According to the Campbell Volunteer Fire Department, the train derailed on US Highway 62 west, approximately three miles west of Campbell.

Officials say that Highway 62 west was closed Tuesday, between Highway B and the Arkansas state line, while crews worked to clean up the derailment site.

No information was available on what caused the derailment or if there were any injuries.

MAN FACING ARSON CHARGE FOLLOWING CHURCH FIRE

A fire at a church in Campbell has led to arson charges for an area man.

According to a Probable Cause Affidavit, a Campbell Police Officer was alerted on the evening of November 27th that the old General Baptist Church Building was on fire.

A witness told the officer that they were driving near the church when they observed Derrick Rice, of Campbell, standing on an elevated concrete ramp on the east side of the building and holding a flaming object.

The witness stated they observed Rice throw the flaming object inside the doorway and run down the ramp away from the building.

During the course of the investigation, another witness told investigators that Rice recently said he would burn the building within 30 days to prevent it from being developed into a drug rehabilitation facility.

Rice denied setting the fire during an interview.

A warrant was served earlier this week for Rice, charging him with felony arson - 2nd degree.

STATE OFFICIALS INVESTIGATING CASE OF BULL ELK POACHING IN CARTER COUNTY

State officials are investigating a case of elk poaching in Carter County.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, a bull elk was recently poached and left to waste at Peck Ranch Conservation Area.

Anyone who visited the conservation area on November 25th or 26th is asked to call Operation Game Thief at 1-800-392-1111.

Officials say that a reward will be available for information that leads to a conviction.

AREA RESIDENTS URGED TO USE CAUTION IF DRIVING DURING WINTER WEATHER

Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas residents are being advised to use caution if they are getting out on the roadways today during the winter weather.

According to the National Weather Service, a mixed winter weather system crossed the area overnight, including snow, sleet, and freezing rain for some areas.

If you must travel while winter weather is covering the roadways, make sure to have a full tank of gas, extra blankets and gloves, as well as provisions like water and snacks in the event of an emergency. Keep your cellphone charged, but do not use it while driving.

While driving, remember to buckle up, give yourself plenty of extra time to get to your destination, and remember to give snowplows room to work. Don’t tailgate or attempt to pass them. In the event of a crash, stay buckled inside your vehicle until help arrives.

COMMUNITY RECEPTION EVENT SCHEDULED FOR TONIGHT TO HONOR NEW POPLR BLUFF POLICE CHIEF

A special event has been scheduled for tonight to welcome and honor the new Poplar Bluff Police Chief.

Poplar Bluff City Manager Robert Knodell tells KWOC News that the Poplar Bluff Police Department is hosting a community reception for Chief JR Keirsey.

Knodell says that the event will be held at the Poplar Bluff Police Department from 5:30 to 7 pm.

DEPUTY UNHARMED AFTER NEW MADRID COUNTY SHERIFF DEPARTMENT VEHICLE HIT ON US HIGHWAY 61

One person was injured after a vehicle struck a New Madrid County Sheriff Deputy’s vehicle early Monday morning.

According to New Madrid County Sheriff Joey Higgerson, shortly after 5 am Monday, a deputy was blocking one lane of US Highway 61, south of Highway 80, for a downed power line when a vehicle struck the deputy’s patrol car.

The patrol car was knocked into a nearby ditch, however the deputy did not suffer any injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle was transported from the scene with minor injuries.

VAN BUREN MAN FACING MULTIPLE SEXUAL RELATED CHARGES INCLUDING STATUTORY RAPE

A continuing investigation has led to the arrest of a Van Buren man on multiple sexual related charges.

According to Carter County Sheriff Alonzo Bradwell, Kenneth Crawford was arrested in November for statutory rape 2nd Degree and endangering the welfare of a child engaging in sexual conduct under 17.

Bradwell says that his team has continued to investigate the case which has resulted in several more charges being filed, including sexual exploitation of a minor, two counts of statutory sodomy - 2nd degree, and four counts of possession of child pornography.

THREE PEOPLE KILLED IN MISSOURI TRAFFIC CRASHES DURING HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Three people were killed in traffic crashes in Missouri during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, troopers worked 304 traffic crashes, which included 82 injuries and three fatalities.

None of the fatalities were located in Southeast Missouri.

This year, troopers also made 87 DWI arrests over the holiday weekend.

All numbers were down compared to last year’s Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

MAGNITUDE 2.2 EARTHQUAKE HITS SOUTHEAST MISSOURI SUNDAY EVENING

A small earthquake was reported in Southeast Missouri Sunday evening.

According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 2.2 earthquake was recorded at around 5:48 pm Sunday.

The earthquake was centered less than a mile northwest of Cooter and had a depth of around 5.3 miles.

2025 RIVER RADIO LIGHTED CHRISTMAS PARADE SET FOR THIS FRIDAY NIGHT

Parade lights will be shining bright in Downtown Poplar Bluff this Friday for the 2025 River Radio Lighted Christmas Parade.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 6 pm this Friday. Line up will begin at 4:30 at the Sky-High Fun Zone parking lot.

The parade route this year will run from Highway 142 at McDonalds through downtown Poplar Bluff before looping back and ending at the Black River Coliseum.

The 3rd Annual Poplar Bluff Community Tree Lighting will be held in front of the Black River Coliseum as the parade kicks off at 6 pm.

WINTER WEATHER POSSIBLE TONIGHT ACROSS SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

An incoming winter weather system will bring chances of snow, sleet, and freezing rain to Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a Winter Weather Advisory will go into effect tonight for portions of Southeast Missouri.

Mixed precipitation is expected as a part of this system with some areas seeing snow and sleet accumulations of up to around one inch and ice accumulations around a light glaze possible.

The precipitation could cause issues for the commute Tuesday morning, with roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, possibly becoming slick and hazardous in locations that receive winter weather.

FILING TO BEGIN ON DECEMBER 9TH FOR THREE POSITIONS ON THE POPLAR BLUFF R-1 SCHOOL BOARD

Filing is scheduled to begin next week for multiple positions on the Poplar Bluff R-1 Board of Education.

According to school officials, there are three positions available for three year terms that will be voted on during the election on April 7th, 2026.

Candidates can file in person with the Secretary of the Board of Education beginning at 8 am on December 9th at the School Administration Office.

The deadline to file for the election will be 5 pm on December 30th. The candidate’s names will be placed on the ballot in order of filing.

HIGHWAY PATROL HEADQUARTERS IN POPLAR BLUFF LIT UP IN BLUE TO PAY TRIBUTE TO FALLEN OFFICERS

The Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop E headquarters in Poplar Bluff will be lit up in blue this month to pay tribute to fallen officers and show support for law enforcement.

The Highway Patrol will be participating in Project Blue Light, which will see the general headquarters, division offices, and troop headquarters buildings display blue lights through January 2nd.

Officials say that 31 members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol have given their lives providing service and protection to Missouri’s citizens.

MODOT ANNOUNCES PLANS TO REHABILITATE BRIDGE IN BUTLER COUNTY

The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced plans for an upcoming bridge project in Butler County.

MoDOT plans to rehabilitate the Route MM bridge over Harviell Creek. The bridge is located west of County Road 355.

Officials say that work could begin as early as July 2026. The roadway will be closed in the vicinity of the bridge as construction is underway.

The rehabilitation work will be underway for approximately two months.

CULVERT REPLACEMENT TO CAUSE DELAYS THIS WEEK IN DEXTER

Route 114 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from County Road 725 to McCormic Street in Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m daily through Wednesday.

MELISSA BERGER APPOINTED BUTLER COUNTY PUBLIC ADMINISTRATOR

A new Public Administrator has been announced for Butler County.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe tells KWOC News that the deputy public administrator Melissa Berger has been appointed to the role.

Berger is from Qulin and has previously served as city clerk for the City of Qulin and as a title researcher and closer for Heritage Title.

She is taking over for Jeff Darnell, who retired from the position in October.

KWOC News spoke with Berger who says she is looking forward to serving Butler County and its citizens in the years ahead.

33RD ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS AUTO TOUR BEGINS FRIDAY

Officials with the US Army Corps of Engineers are preparing for the start of the 2025 Festival of Lights Auto Tour this week.

The 33rd Annual Auto Tour will be held at the Redman Creek East Campground from November 28th through December 27th.

This event is being held in partnership with the Friends of Wappapello Lake. It is supported by businesses, volunteers, churches, organizations, and the community.

Christmas music will be provided during the Auto Tour on Shuffle 92.9. Attendees just need to tune their radio to 92.9 FM.

MOTORISTS ENCOURAGED TO DRIVE SAFELY DURING THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Many Missouri residents are getting ready to get on the road to see their family for Thanksgiving, but officials are urging motorists to keep safety in mind.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 11 people were killed during the 2024 Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Officials are urging motorists to be vigilant, always buckle up, obey posted speed limits, and never drive impaired or distracted.

State Troopers will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E., over the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend, enforcing all traffic laws, and being available to assist the public.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Emergency Report line is 1-800-525-5555, or (star)55 on a cellular phone. Motorists should use the emergency line if they witness criminal activity or experience an emergency.

THANKSGIVING COOKING SAFETY TIPS

Thanksgiving is almost here, and the American Red Cross is reminding you to stay safe while you prepare the holiday dinner.

The Red Cross advises that cooks should avoid wearing loose clothing or dangling sleeves while preparing the holiday meal.

You should also never leave the stove unattended – if the cook has to leave the kitchen even for a short time, they should turn off the stove.

Remember to clean cooking surfaces on a regular basis to prevent grease buildup and keep anything that can catch fire, including pot holders, oven mitts, and food packaging, away from the stove, oven or any other appliance in the kitchen that generates heat.

According to the Center for Disease Control, before cooking your turkey, set the oven temperature no lower than 325°F and be sure the turkey is completely thawed.

For optimal safety and uniform doneness, you should cook the stuffing outside the turkey in a casserole dish. However, if you plan on placing the stuffing inside the turkey, do so just before cooking.

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE HOSTING TURKEY TROT THIS WEEKEND

Three Rivers College has announced a fun walking and running event for this weekend.

The Turkey Trot 3K Fun Run will begin at noon on November 29th in the parking lot of the Tinnin Fine Arts Center in Poplar Bluff.

Officials say the Turkey Trot will help fill The Food Pantry for Three Rivers College students.

The entry fee is a donation for the food pantry and there will also be an award for the runner who is dressed as the tackiest turkey.

TWO JUVENILES FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF ATV CRASH IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Two Portageville juveniles were flown from the scene of an ATV crash over the weekend in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly after 4 pm Sunday on Pemiscot County Road 417 when an ATV travelled off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree before overturning.

The driver and a passenger, identified as a 13 year old girl and a 12 year old girl, were flown to Memphis hospitals with serious injuries.

FILING TO BEGIN IN DECEMBER FOR POPLAR BLUFF CITY COUNCIL ELECTIONS

Filing will begin early next month for the upcoming Poplar Bluff City Council elections.

The city will be holding elections on April 7th for three seats on the City Council, one representative from Ward Five and two at-large seats. The elections will be for three year terms.

Candidates can begin filing for the election on Tuesday, December 9th. The final day for candidate filing will be December 30th.

CARTER COUNTY AWARDED OVER ONE MILLION DOLLARS TO REPLACE DAMAGED INFRASTRUCTURE

A Southeast Missouri county has been awarded money to replace damaged infrastructure.

According to the Delta Regional Authority, Carter County was awarded more than $1 million to replace extensive infrastructure damage caused by reoccurring flood and flash-flooding events in 2024.

The funds will be used to improve structural integrity, enhance stormwater management, and increase infrastructure resilience against future flood events, making roadways safer and passable.

The money is being provided through the Supplemental Disaster Recovery Funding program.

WOMAN ARRESTED FOR HITTING HUSBAND WITH HER VEHICLE

A woman has been taken into custody for allegedly hitting her husband with a vehicle.

According to court documents, Paragould officers were dispatched to the intersection of Highway 49 North and Country Club Road on Friday in reference to a vehicle vs pedestrian.

The victim told officers that his wife, 35 year old Felisha Woodson, of Paragould, had purposely struck him with her vehicle and fled the scene. Multiple witnesses, along with intersection camera footage, corroborated the victim’s statement.

Woodson was arrested Monday on a felony charge of domestic battering in the second degree.

CAMPAIGN TO BE HELD THIS WEEK TO REMIND MOTORISTS TO BUCKLE UP

With many families hitting the road this week to celebrate Thanksgiving, law enforcement officials are reminding motorists to make sure your seat belt is fastened.

According to the Arkansas State Police, law enforcement across the state will be conducting a high-visibility Click It or Ticket seat belt awareness campaign from today through Sunday.

Officials say that during the Thanksgiving holiday period in 2023, there were 309 passenger vehicle occupants killed in traffic crashes across the nation, and 44 percent were unrestrained.

SHOULDER REPAIRS SCHEDULED THIS WEEK IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route AD in Stoddard County will be reduced this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform shoulder work.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route 60 to County Road 442 near Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and tomorrow.

UNITED GOSPEL RESCUE MISSION TO HOST ANNUAL THANKSGIVING DINNER

The United Gospel Rescue Mission is providing their annual Thanksgiving Meal this Thursday.

The meal will be held at around noon on Thanksgiving at the Rescue Mission in Poplar Bluff. If you can’t make it to the rescue mission you can also call ahead and have a meal delivered to you.

The Rescue Mission is in need of volunteers to help prepare meals this week leading up to the event. On Thanksgiving, the rescue mission will also need assistance to prepare, serve, and deliver the meals. They are also accepting donations of desserts to be used in the meals.

Pastor Kirk is expecting to feed many more people this year compared to the over 2,000 meals served last year.

ART FROM TRC STUDENTS TO BE EXHIBITED BEGINNING NEXT WEEK

Area residents will get a chance to view art from local students beginning next week in Poplar Bluff.

According to Three Rivers College officials, you will be able to explore a collection of creative works by TRC students at the Fall Student Art Exhibit.

Art will be shown from December 1st through the 12th at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.

Normal gallery hours are noon to 3 pm, Monday through Friday. Admission is free.

TOY DRIVE AND CAR SHOW SET FOR NOVEMBER 29TH

A Toys for Tots toy drive and car show is scheduled for this weekend in Poplar Bluff.

American Legion Brown Mabry Post 153, Eric Summers Marine Corps League, Downtown PB Cruise In, and Bluff Cars and Coffee are partnering up for the event from 9 am to 3pm on Saturday, November 29th at the American Legion in Poplar Bluff.

Attendees are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy as the entry fee for the car show.

MENARDS HOSTING TOY DRIVE TO BENEFIT LOCAL CHILDREN

A Poplar Bluff area business is accepting toy donations to be given to local children.

The Poplar Bluff Menards is serving as a drop off location for toy donations through December 15th.

You can drop off new, unwrapped toys in the donation box by the Menards exit door. The toys will then be donated to a local organization.

ANNUAL ELKS HOOP SHOOT SCHEDULED FOR DECEMBER

The date is coming up for the 2025 Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest in Poplar Bluff.

Registration for the event will begin at 8:30 am on Saturday, December 13th at Poplar Bluff Middle School.

There is no charge to participate in the Hoop Shoot, which will be from 9 am to 11 am.

VETERAN WREATH PLACEMENT CEREMONY SCHEDULED FOR NEXT MONTH 

Wreaths will be placed on the graves of veterans next month. 

On December 13th the Poplar Bluff Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, in cooperation with Wreaths across America, will hold a ceremony at the Poplar Bluff Memorial Gardens Cemetery to honor veterans buried there. 

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11 am.

Everyone is invited to attend the ceremony, which will be followed by placing wreaths on veteran’s graves.

2025 SANTA LAND TO BE HELD ON DECEMBER 2ND 

Preparations are underway for the annual Santa Land in Poplar Bluff. 

According to Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation, the event will be held on Tuesday, December 2nd, from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Black River Coliseum. 

During the event, children will get to visit with Santa and participate in many fun holiday activities. 

Booth space is available for churches, civic organizations, and members of the public who want to provide activities for children and should focus on giving back to the community.

DATES SET FOR SOUNDS OF CHRISTMAS AT THE PALACE OF PRAISE 

The dates have been set for the annual Christmas themed play at a Poplar Bluff church. 

The Palace of Praise is presenting the 15th Annual Sounds of Christmas nightly from December 15th through the 17th beginning at 7 pm each night.  

Admission to the show is free, but you can also purchase tickets for a dinner theater experience on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.

The date has been announced for the 2026 Three Rivers College Alumni Reunion. 

A full day of festivities is planned for the Raider Reunion on Saturday, February 21st on the campus of Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff.

This year’s event included a pancake breakfast, Alumni Star reception, Raider of the Year recognition, and Lady Raiders and Raiders basketball games.

BREAKFAST WITH SANTA SCHEDULED FOR NEXT MONTH AT POPLAR BLUFF KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS 

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be featured guests during Breakfast with Santa next month in Poplar Bluff. 

The Knights of Columbus will be hosting Breakfast with Santa from 8 am to 11 am on Sunday, December 7th at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Grand Avenue. 

Breakfast will be served by donation. Parents are encouraged to bring their cameras for free pictures with the Clauses.
