MELISSA BERGER APPOINTED BUTLER COUNTY PUBLIC ADMINISTRATOR

A new Public Administrator has been announced for Butler County.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe tells KWOC News that the deputy public administrator Melissa Berger has been appointed to the role.

Berger is from Qulin and has previously served as city clerk for the City of Qulin and as a title researcher and closer for Heritage Title.

She is taking over for Jeff Darnell, who retired from the position in October.

KWOC News spoke with Berger who says she is looking forward to serving Butler County and its citizens in the years ahead.

33RD ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS AUTO TOUR BEGINS FRIDAY

Officials with the US Army Corps of Engineers are preparing for the start of the 2025 Festival of Lights Auto Tour this week.

The 33rd Annual Auto Tour will be held at the Redman Creek East Campground from November 28th through December 27th.

This event is being held in partnership with the Friends of Wappapello Lake. It is supported by businesses, volunteers, churches, organizations, and the community.

Christmas music will be provided during the Auto Tour on Shuffle 92.9. Attendees just need to tune their radio to 92.9 FM.

MOTORISTS ENCOURAGED TO DRIVE SAFELY DURING THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Many Missouri residents are getting ready to get on the road to see their family for Thanksgiving, but officials are urging motorists to keep safety in mind.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 11 people were killed during the 2024 Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Officials are urging motorists to be vigilant, always buckle up, obey posted speed limits, and never drive impaired or distracted.

State Troopers will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E., over the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend, enforcing all traffic laws, and being available to assist the public.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Emergency Report line is 1-800-525-5555, or (star)55 on a cellular phone. Motorists should use the emergency line if they witness criminal activity or experience an emergency.

THANKSGIVING COOKING SAFETY TIPS

Thanksgiving is almost here, and the American Red Cross is reminding you to stay safe while you prepare the holiday dinner.

The Red Cross advises that cooks should avoid wearing loose clothing or dangling sleeves while preparing the holiday meal.

You should also never leave the stove unattended – if the cook has to leave the kitchen even for a short time, they should turn off the stove.

Remember to clean cooking surfaces on a regular basis to prevent grease buildup and keep anything that can catch fire, including pot holders, oven mitts, and food packaging, away from the stove, oven or any other appliance in the kitchen that generates heat.

According to the Center for Disease Control, before cooking your turkey, set the oven temperature no lower than 325°F and be sure the turkey is completely thawed.

For optimal safety and uniform doneness, you should cook the stuffing outside the turkey in a casserole dish. However, if you plan on placing the stuffing inside the turkey, do so just before cooking.

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE HOSTING TURKEY TROT THIS WEEKEND

Three Rivers College has announced a fun walking and running event for this weekend.

The Turkey Trot 3K Fun Run will begin at noon on November 29th in the parking lot of the Tinnin Fine Arts Center in Poplar Bluff.

Officials say the Turkey Trot will help fill The Food Pantry for Three Rivers College students.

The entry fee is a donation for the food pantry and there will also be an award for the runner who is dressed as the tackiest turkey.

TWO JUVENILES FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF ATV CRASH IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Two Portageville juveniles were flown from the scene of an ATV crash over the weekend in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly after 4 pm Sunday on Pemiscot County Road 417 when an ATV travelled off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree before overturning.

The driver and a passenger, identified as a 13 year old girl and a 12 year old girl, were flown to Memphis hospitals with serious injuries.

FILING TO BEGIN IN DECEMBER FOR POPLAR BLUFF CITY COUNCIL ELECTIONS

Filing will begin early next month for the upcoming Poplar Bluff City Council elections.

The city will be holding elections on April 7th for three seats on the City Council, one representative from Ward Five and two at-large seats. The elections will be for three year terms.

Candidates can begin filing for the election on Tuesday, December 9th. The final day for candidate filing will be December 30th.

CARTER COUNTY AWARDED OVER ONE MILLION DOLLARS TO REPLACE DAMAGED INFRASTRUCTURE

A Southeast Missouri county has been awarded money to replace damaged infrastructure.

According to the Delta Regional Authority, Carter County was awarded more than $1 million to replace extensive infrastructure damage caused by reoccurring flood and flash-flooding events in 2024.

The funds will be used to improve structural integrity, enhance stormwater management, and increase infrastructure resilience against future flood events, making roadways safer and passable.

The money is being provided through the Supplemental Disaster Recovery Funding program.

WOMAN ARRESTED FOR HITTING HUSBAND WITH HER VEHICLE

A woman has been taken into custody for allegedly hitting her husband with a vehicle.

According to court documents, Paragould officers were dispatched to the intersection of Highway 49 North and Country Club Road on Friday in reference to a vehicle vs pedestrian.

The victim told officers that his wife, 35 year old Felisha Woodson, of Paragould, had purposely struck him with her vehicle and fled the scene. Multiple witnesses, along with intersection camera footage, corroborated the victim’s statement.

Woodson was arrested Monday on a felony charge of domestic battering in the second degree.

CAMPAIGN TO BE HELD THIS WEEK TO REMIND MOTORISTS TO BUCKLE UP

With many families hitting the road this week to celebrate Thanksgiving, law enforcement officials are reminding motorists to make sure your seat belt is fastened.

According to the Arkansas State Police, law enforcement across the state will be conducting a high-visibility Click It or Ticket seat belt awareness campaign from today through Sunday.

Officials say that during the Thanksgiving holiday period in 2023, there were 309 passenger vehicle occupants killed in traffic crashes across the nation, and 44 percent were unrestrained.

SHOULDER REPAIRS SCHEDULED THIS WEEK IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route AD in Stoddard County will be reduced this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform shoulder work.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route 60 to County Road 442 near Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and tomorrow.

UNITED GOSPEL RESCUE MISSION TO HOST ANNUAL THANKSGIVING DINNER

The United Gospel Rescue Mission is providing their annual Thanksgiving Meal this Thursday.

The meal will be held at around noon on Thanksgiving at the Rescue Mission in Poplar Bluff. If you can’t make it to the rescue mission you can also call ahead and have a meal delivered to you.

The Rescue Mission is in need of volunteers to help prepare meals this week leading up to the event. On Thanksgiving, the rescue mission will also need assistance to prepare, serve, and deliver the meals. They are also accepting donations of desserts to be used in the meals.

Pastor Kirk is expecting to feed many more people this year compared to the over 2,000 meals served last year.

DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR ENTRIES TO THE RIVER RADIO LIGHTED CHRISTMAS PARADE

Parade lights will be shining bright in Downtown Poplar Bluff this December for the 2025 River Radio Lighted Christmas Parade.

Entries are being accepted for the parade, which is scheduled for 6 pm on Friday, December 5th. Entry forms are available at River Radio in Poplar Bluff. The deadline for entries is November 26th.

The parade route this year will run from Highway 142 at McDonalds through downtown Poplar Bluff before looping back and ending at the Black River Coliseum.

ART FROM TRC STUDENTS TO BE EXHIBITED BEGINNING NEXT WEEK

Area residents will get a chance to view art from local students beginning next week in Poplar Bluff.

According to Three Rivers College officials, you will be able to explore a collection of creative works by TRC students at the Fall Student Art Exhibit.

Art will be shown from December 1st through the 12th at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.

Normal gallery hours are noon to 3 pm, Monday through Friday. Admission is free.

TOY DRIVE AND CAR SHOW SET FOR NOVEMBER 29TH

A Toys for Tots toy drive and car show is scheduled for this weekend in Poplar Bluff.

American Legion Brown Mabry Post 153, Eric Summers Marine Corps League, Downtown PB Cruise In, and Bluff Cars and Coffee are partnering up for the event from 9 am to 3pm on Saturday, November 29th at the American Legion in Poplar Bluff.

Attendees are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy as the entry fee for the car show.

MENARDS HOSTING TOY DRIVE TO BENEFIT LOCAL CHILDREN

A Poplar Bluff area business is accepting toy donations to be given to local children.

The Poplar Bluff Menards is serving as a drop off location for toy donations through December 15th.

You can drop off new, unwrapped toys in the donation box by the Menards exit door. The toys will then be donated to a local organization.

ANNUAL ELKS HOOP SHOOT SCHEDULED FOR DECEMBER

The date is coming up for the 2025 Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest in Poplar Bluff.

Registration for the event will begin at 8:30 am on Saturday, December 13th at Poplar Bluff Middle School.

There is no charge to participate in the Hoop Shoot, which will be from 9 am to 11 am.

VETERAN WREATH PLACEMENT CEREMONY SCHEDULED FOR NEXT MONTH 

Wreaths will be placed on the graves of veterans next month. 

On December 13th the Poplar Bluff Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, in cooperation with Wreaths across America, will hold a ceremony at the Poplar Bluff Memorial Gardens Cemetery to honor veterans buried there. 

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11 am.

Everyone is invited to attend the ceremony, which will be followed by placing wreaths on veteran’s graves.

2025 SANTA LAND TO BE HELD ON DECEMBER 2ND 

Preparations are underway for the annual Santa Land in Poplar Bluff. 

According to Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation, the event will be held on Tuesday, December 2nd, from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Black River Coliseum. 

During the event, children will get to visit with Santa and participate in many fun holiday activities. 

Booth space is available for churches, civic organizations, and members of the public who want to provide activities for children and should focus on giving back to the community.

DATES SET FOR SOUNDS OF CHRISTMAS AT THE PALACE OF PRAISE 

The dates have been set for the annual Christmas themed play at a Poplar Bluff church. 

The Palace of Praise is presenting the 15th Annual Sounds of Christmas nightly from December 15th through the 17th beginning at 7 pm each night.  

Admission to the show is free, but you can also purchase tickets for a dinner theater experience on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.

The date has been announced for the 2026 Three Rivers College Alumni Reunion. 

A full day of festivities is planned for the Raider Reunion on Saturday, February 21st on the campus of Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff.

This year’s event included a pancake breakfast, Alumni Star reception, Raider of the Year recognition, and Lady Raiders and Raiders basketball games.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be featured guests during Breakfast with Santa next month in Poplar Bluff.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE INVESTIGATING SHOOTING ON FRANKLIN STREET

Officials are investigating a shooting that occurred in Poplar Bluff.

Lt. Josh Stewart with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News officers are investigating a shooting that happened Tuesday afternoon in the 1000 block of Franklin Street. Around 2 pm, police found 47‑year‑old Jason Knuckles of Poplar Bluff suffering from two gunshot wounds to the abdomen. He was flown to a St. Louis hospital and is listed in critical but stable condition.

Investigators say Knuckles assaulted 35‑year‑old Joshua Hoffmeister, also of Poplar Bluff, who then fired a handgun. This is the second shooting involving the two men, following an August 2024 incident that authorities ruled justified.

Police say the facts of this latest case will be reviewed with the Butler County Prosecuting Attorney before any charges are considered.

HEAVY RAINFALL POSSIBLE TODAY IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 

We could see some heavy rain today in Southeast Missouri. 

According to a Hazardous Weather Outlook from the National Weather Service, locally moderate to heavy rainfall is expected today, which may lead to isolated flooding of poor drainage and flood-prone areas. 

Most of Southeast Missouri is expected to receive between one and two inches of rainfall. 

Weather officials say that any thunderstorms that develop today are expected to remain below severe limits.

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS AUTO TOUR TO BEGIN ON NOVEMBER 28TH 

We are close to the beginning of an annual holiday tradition in Southeast Missouri. 

The 33rd Annual Festival of Lights Auto Tour will begin at the Redman Creek East Campground on November 28th. 

The Auto Tour will be open on weekends from 5 pm to 9 pm through December 7th and then open nightly from December 12th to December 28th.

This event is being held in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

SIGNAGE WORK TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY IN DEXTER 

One Mile Road in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform signage work.  

The work zone will be located from North Outer Road to County Road 413 in Dexter. 

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  

DISASTER RECOVERY CENTER OPENING TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY 

A Disaster Recovery Center will be opening today in Butler County. 

The center will be located at the Poplar Bluff Library - Ridgel Branch. It will be open from 11 am to 6 pm today, 10:30 am to 4:30 pm on Friday, and 11:30 am to 2:30 pm on Saturday. 

Missourians who sustained damage to their primary residence or personal property due to the severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding that occurred from March 30th through April 8th of this year can visit the center for one-on-one help. 

The counties who are eligible include Butler, Carter, Dunklin, New Madrid, Ripley, Stoddard, and Wayne, among others. 

At the centers, affected individuals can get help applying for disaster assistance, speak to state or federal representatives, receive updates on their FEMA registration, and more. 

FEMA financial assistance may include money for basic home repairs, personal property losses or other underinsured/uninsured disaster-related needs such as childcare, transportation, medical needs, funeral, or dental expenses. The FEMA registration deadline is December 22nd.

THREE RIVERS SHRINE CLUB TO HOST TOY RUN NEXT WEEKEND 

An event is scheduled for next weekend to benefit Shriner’s Hospitals. 

The Three Rivers Shrine Club Toy Run will begin at noon on Saturday November 29th. Signups begin at 11 am at the Shrine Club on Kennedy Lane in Poplar Bluff. 

Organizers say that Motorcycles, Hot Rods, and Side by Sides are all welcome. All toy and monetary donations will go to Shriner’s Hospitals.

TWIN RIVERS WINS 50K KI CLASSROOM FURNITURE GIVEAWAY IN HONOR OF HOLLY JOHNSON 

The Twin Rivers community has something big to celebrate. After ten days of determined voting and grassroots campaigning, Twin Rivers has officially won the $50,000 KI Classroom Furniture Giveaway. 

Twin Rivers Principal Mike Berry shared how the school became part of the contest, and the significance in honoring and extending the legacy of Holly Johnson.

“Holly and I looked at doing some stuff for the library. A couple of years ago before she was sick, and we had talked about some plans and I wanted her vision for what she wanted it to look like. And we discussed quite a bit, but we just never got around to because her health declined. And so, we had already planned it some of this. When she passed away, that Friday, we were supposed to be throwing her retirement party. That was something that our staff had planned to surprise her and we were trying to get her there. And then we ended up all attending her visitation that night instead. So that was a big difference. But a few weeks later, her mother-in-law, Pat Johnson, reached out to me. She had hey Mike, I just wanted you to know that I really like to, donate some books in Holly's honor. And I said, I love it, Pat. I said, but I've been thinking about something bigger. I want to do something more. And I'd already been planning the silent auction. Like that was something I'd already been spending Mondays going out to businesses, trying to round up some things. And so, but when she said that, it really sparked the, okay we're moving. Holly was somebody who went all out. And I think you realize that. When she's not here, I mean, her absence is truly noticeable around campus, and so, I mean, she did everything. The things that, you know, people have had to step up and do that Holly helped out with around here. She truly loved and cared for the school and. So doing this, like, I felt like we're going to do it right. I feel like it's not going to be a like a pitiful attempt. I think it's going to be a showcase of this campus. And I think that, for me, I just I wanted to make sure I did something really good, to honor her memory and her legacy. It's going to be phenomenal. I just can't believe it's going to happen so quickly. You know, I just thought it was going to be a lot longer journey.” 

With the help of students, staff, families, and friends, the Twin Rivers School District was able to accrue over 43,000 votes, to secure the major upgrade for the Twin Rivers Library.

CAMPAIGN TO BE HELD NEXT WEEK TO REMIND MOTORISTS TO BUCKLE UP

According to the Arkansas State Police, law enforcement across the state will be conducting a high-visibility Click It or Ticket seat belt awareness campaign from next Monday through Sunday. 

Officials say that officers will be taking a no-excuses approach to seat belt law enforcement, writing citations both day and night to save lives.

NATIONAL CRASH RESPONDER SAFETY WEEK IS THIS WEEK

Motorists are being urged to slow down and move over as a part of National Crash Responder Safety Week this week. 

On a daily basis, emergency responders put their lives on the line along Missouri’s highways responding to crash scenes. These workers include police, fire, EMS, tow truck operators and highway workers. 

Officials say that by state law, drivers are required to move over or slow down, but a significant number do not. 

In 2024, more than 136,000 traffic crashes were reported on Missouri roadways that required emergency response. 

Missouri’s Move Over law requires drivers to either change lanes or slow down when approaching stationary MoDOT, law enforcement or other emergency vehicles with flashing lights on.

SHOULDER REPAIRS UNDERWAY ON ROUTE 51 IN STODDARD COUNTY   

 Route 51 in Stoddard County will be reduced through next week as contractor crews perform shoulder repairs.   

According to MoDOT, the section of roadway is located from Route 60 to County Road 494A near Fisk.  

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Friday, November 28.

POPLAR BLUFF KIWANIS CLUB ACCEPTING PAJAMA DONATIONS FOR CHILDREN 

The annual Pajama Rama donation drive is underway in Poplar Bluff.

The Kiwanis Club of Poplar Bluff is accepting new pajamas, underwear, and socks, for toddlers to young adults. The Club will be distributing the items to children in foster care with the help of Foster Adopt Connect. 

You can drop off items at the Whitworth Gift Chest Jewelers, The Poplar Bluff Library, and First Midwest Bank. Donations will be accepted through December 5th.

CITY OF QULIN TO THROW CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION 

A Butler County city will be throwing a Christmas Celebration in December. 

The Qulin Christmas Celebration is scheduled from 6 to 8 pm on Saturday, December 6th. 

The event will feature live music, food trucks, photos with Santa, and a tree lighting ceremony at Qulin City Hall.

CULVERT REPLACEMENT TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY NEAR LILBOURN 

Route 61 in New Madrid County will be reduced today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.  

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route 62 to Route D near Lilbourn. 

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

HUNTERS ENCOURAGED TO SHARE THEIR HARVEST WITH FAMILIES IN NEED 

Hunters across the state of Missouri are being asked to share their harvest this fall to help feed families in need. 

The Missouri Department of Conservation Share the Harvest program provides food to the hungry through deer meat donated by hunters.  

Hunters can choose to give part or all of any deer they harvest. They simply bring their deer to an approved meat processor to process the venison, usually into ground meat, where it is then packaged for distribution. 

Share the Harvest is a statewide partnership between MDC, the Conservation Federation of Missouri, cooperating meat processors, and hunters.

MAN FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A CRASH IN NEW MADRID COUNTY 

A man was flown from the scene of a single vehicle crash in New Madrid County. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly before midnight Sunday evening on Interstate 55 northbound at mile marker 40.6, where a 27 year old Indianapolis, Indiana man ran off the roadway, struck a cable barrier, and overturned. 

The man suffered moderate injuries and was flown to a Memphis hospital.

CREWS TO PERFORM CULVERT REPLACEMENT TODAY NEAR BRAGGADOCIO 

Route J in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway. 

The section of roadway being reduced is located from County Road 433 to Route Z near Braggadocio. 

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

THREE CHARGED IN CONNECTION TO THE MURDER OF MISSING PORTAGEVILLE TEENAGER 

Updating a story we have been following for you, authorities say that they have found the body of a missing Portageville teenager. 

Sergeant Bradley Germann with the Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control tells KWOC News that investigators located the body of 18 year old Kaniah Jennings on Friday in rural Pemiscot County. 

Pemiscot County Prosecuting Attorney Steven Horton says that three men have been charged in connection to Jennings murder. 

34 year old Kennan Peoples of Hayti, has been charged murder 1st degree, kidnapping 1st degree, rape 1st degree, and tampering with physical evidence in a felony prosecution. 

18 year old Blake Patrick, of East Prairie, is charged with accessory to murder in the 1st degree, rape 1st degree, kidnapping 1st degree, tampering with a motor vehicle 1st degree, stealing a firearm, and stealing over $750. 

38 year old Donald Peoples Jr., of Hayti, is charged with accessory to murder in the first degree and tampering with physical evidence in a felony prosecution. 

Germann added that the DDCC investigation into Jennings' death is ongoing.  Anyone with information that may assist investigators is encouraged to contact the Highway Patrol Troop E Headquarters at 573-840-9500.

HUNTERS REMINDED TO BE AWARE OF BAITING REGULATIONS 

Deer season is here and the Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding hunters of baiting regulations. 

According to the MDC, the use of bait, including grain or other feed placed or scattered to attract deer or turkey while hunting this fall is illegal. 

A hunter can be in violation if they take or attempt to take a deer by the aid of bait where the hunter knows or reasonably should know that the area is or has been baited. An area is considered baited for 10 days after complete removal of the bait. 

Officials say the regulations are in place to help limit the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease in deer and to ensure fair chase.

FAFSA FRENZY EVENTS COMING TO POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL 

Multiple events have been scheduled over the next few months in Poplar Bluff to help students and their families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. 

FAFSA Frenzy will be held from 4 to 6 pm at the Poplar Bluff High School Cafeteria on Tuesday, November 18th.

Additional FAFSA Frenzy events have been scheduled for December 11th and January 12th. 

DISASTER RECOVERY CENTERS OPENING THIS WEEK IN RIPLEY AND WAYNE COUNTIES 

Disaster Recovery Centers will be available this week in Carter and Wayne Counties. 

A center will be opening today from 11 am to 4 pm at the Carter County Courthouse. That center will also be open from 8 am to 4 pm on Tuesday through Thursday and 10 am to 4 pm on Friday. 

A center has also been opened at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Piedmont. That center will be available from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm today and tomorrow. 

Missourians who sustained damage to their primary residence or personal property due to the severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding that occurred from March 30th through April 8th of this year can visit the centers for one-on-one help. The counties who are eligible include Butler, Carter, Dunklin, New Madrid, Ripley, Stoddard, and Wayne, among others. 

Affected individuals can get help applying for disaster assistance, speak to state or federal representatives, receive updates on their FEMA registration, and more. 

FEMA financial assistance may include money for basic home repairs, personal property losses or other underinsured/uninsured disaster-related needs such as childcare, transportation, medical needs, funeral, or dental expenses. Route F in Stoddard County will be reduced this week so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform shoulder work.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, through Friday. 

UNITED GOSPEL RESCUE MISSION TO HOST ANNUAL THANKSGIVING DINNER 

The United Gospel Rescue Mission is providing their annual Thanksgiving Meal on November 27th.  

The meal will be held at around noon on Thanksgiving at the Rescue Mission in Poplar Bluff. If you can’t make it to the rescue mission you can also call ahead and have a meal delivered to you. 

The Rescue Mission is in need of volunteers to help prepare meals leading up to the event. On Thanksgiving, the rescue mission will also need assistance to prepare, serve, and deliver the meals. They are also accepting donations of desserts to be used in the meals. 

Pastor Kirk is expecting to feed many more people this year compared to the over 2,000 meals served last year.

DEER SEASON BEGINS ON SATURDAY

Hunters from across Missouri will be heading to the woods this weekend for the beginning of deer season.

Officials with the Missouri Department of Conservation say that the November portion of the firearms deer season runs from November 15th through the 25th and the opening weekend is the most popular two days for most deer hunters in Missouri.

Hunters are reminded that only one antlered deer may be taken during the entire firearms season.

STATE OFFICIALS STRESS SAFETY FOR NON-HUNTERS DURING HUNTING SEASON

Firearms deer season will open this weekend in Missouri and state officials are reminding non-hunters that they also need to practice safety measures when afield.

Officials say that non-hunters should wear bright clothing to be more visible, such as a bright orange hat, jacket, or pack.

Place a bright orange vest or bandana on canines who join you and remember to keep them leashed. Be aware that hunters are often most active during the early morning and late afternoon, when game animals are most active. Be especially aware of your own visibility during these times when light is dim.

Stay on designated trails. Trails are designed to improve the safety of public users and to protect sensitive habitats. Enjoying recreational activities only on designated trails will reduce the likelihood of entering hunting areas.

If you hear shooting, raise your voice, and let hunters know you are in the area.

MODOT ANNOUNCES PLANS TO REHABILITATE BRIDGE IN POPLAR BLUFF

The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced plans for an upcoming bridge project in Poplar Bluff.

MoDOT plans to rehabilitate the northbound Business 67 bridge over Pike Creek. The bridge is located southwest of the Business 67 intersection at Route 53 and Shelby Road.

Officials say that work could begin as early as January 2027 and construction will be staged to allow the roadway to remain open. Motorists should anticipate a lane closure with a 10.5-foot width restriction in the vicinity of the northbound bridge as work is underway.

The rehabilitation work will be underway for approximately four months.

MOTORISTS WARNED TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR DEER

Deer season begins on Saturday and Missouri motorists are being advised to watch for more animals on the roadway.

Officials say that deer are more active and create hazards for Missouri motorists at this time of year.

The majority of deer strike crashes happen in the 6 to 7 am and 6 to 9 pm timeframes.

Last year, drivers in Missouri experienced 2,952 traffic crashes where deer-vehicle strikes occurred. In these crashes, there were four fatalities and 420 people were injured.

Drivers are reminded that an attempt to avoid striking a deer could result in a more serious crash involving oncoming traffic. As soon as you see a deer, the best course of action is to reduce your speed gradually while watching other traffic around you.

If you do strike a deer, move your vehicle to a safe location and call 9-1-1 or *55 on a cell phone and report it.

DEER HUNTERS REMINDED OF MANDATORY CWD SAMPLING

With firearm deer season coming up, the Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding deer hunters that it will be holding mandatory chronic wasting disease sampling during the opening weekend.

Hunters who harvest deer from designated counties in the CWD Management Zone on November 15th or 16th are required to take their harvested deer, or the head, on the day of harvest to one of MDC’s numerous CWD mandatory sampling stations located throughout the zone.

Southeast Missouri counties included in the CWD Management Zone include Ripley, Pemiscot, Shannon, Bollinger, and Oregon.

Hunters must present their deer to a CWD mandatory sampling station within the county of harvest, with a few exceptions. Sampling and test results are free.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER TRYING TO FIGHT NEW MADRID COUNTY DEPUTY

A man has been taken into custody after attempting to fight with a law enforcement officer in New Madrid County.

According to New Madrid County Sheriff Joey Higgerson, on the evening of November 9th a deputy responded to an area house in reference to suspicious activity.

The residents said they went outside and found a man inside one of their cars in the driveway. The man fled the scene after being confronted by the homeowner.

A short time later the deputy found the man, identified as Jared Childers, in the parking lot of a gas station in Portageville. Childers attempted to flee the scene, and then tried to fight with the deputy once he was caught.

Higgerson says that Childers is a registered sex offender who is currently on parole for statutory rape. Higgerson added that he has spoken to several citizens over the past few months who expressed concerns about Childers’s suspicious behavior.

Childers has been charged with burglary 2nd degree and resisting arrest. He is being held on a $75,000 cash only bond.

NAME RELEASED OF WOMAN KILLED IN BUTLER COUNTY CRASH

Updating a story we have been following for you, authorities have released the identity of a woman who was killed in a crash Tuesday afternoon in Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a vehicle ran a stop sign at the intersection of US Highway 160 and Highway C and struck another vehicle.

Butler County Coroner Jim Akers tells KWOC News that a passenger in the second vehicle, identified as 65 year old Pamela Sutton, of Patterson, was killed in the crash.

Each driver received serious injuries and were transported to area hospitals.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING CRASH INVOLVING DUMP TRUCK IN STODDARD COUNTY

One person has died after a crash involving a dump truck in Stoddard County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 52 year old Dexter woman was driving on US Highway 60 in Stoddard County when she struck the rear of the dump truck.

Officials say the crash occurred Wednesday morning at around 8 am, two miles east of Dexter.

The woman was transported to a Dexter hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

FUGITIVE ARRESTED IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Multiple law enforcement agencies teamed up to arrest a fugitive this week in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Rector Police Department, on Tuesday Rector officers assisted the Clay County Sheriff Department, Arkansas State Police, and representatives of the US Marshals in regards to a fugitive from Tennessee hiding in the Greenway area.

Bail enforcement agents from Tennessee had located the subject wanted on a nationwide extradition warrant just outside Greenway and were able to visually identify the subject and maintain visual while law enforcement agencies planned an arrest.

Officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle containing the subject, which led to the Clay County Sheriff’s Department recovering several syringes, many containing methamphetamine, from the vehicle.

Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole says that five individuals have been taken into custody in connection to the investigation. 52 year old Jason Jones of Jackson, Tennessee was taken into custody on the fugitive warrant.

The other four individuals arrested include 50 year old Jason Waddell, 44 year old Renee Carsley, 50 year old Melissa Beraud, and 32 year old Kristen Jewell, all of Rector.

ARKANSAS MAN ARRESTED IN BUTLER COUNTY FOR DELIVERY OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE

Authorities in Butler County have arrested an Arkansas man on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 43 year old Brandon Thompson, of Paragould, Arkansas, was taken into custody shortly after 9 pm Tuesday night on a felony charge of delivery of a controlled substance - methamphetamine.

Following the arrest, Thompson was held in the Butler County Jail.

ROAD CREWS TO WORK ON INTERSTATE 55 IN PEMISCOT COUNTY THIS WEEK

Northbound Interstate 55 in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.

The section of roadway being reduced is located between mile markers 26 and 28.

Weather permitting, work will take place today and tomorrow, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE CHIEF ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

The top law enforcement officer in Poplar Bluff is stepping down.

Poplar Bluff City Manager Robert Knodell has confirmed with KWOC News that Danny Whiteley is retiring as the Poplar Bluff Chief of Police.

Whiteley originally retired from the position in 2022, ending an over two decade tenure as Police Chief. Whitley was rehired for the position in May.

“It has been my honor to serve the citizens of Poplar Bluff in the effort to protect lives and property,” Whiteley said. “This final stint was truly special, having the opportunity to hopefully set the Police Department on a successful course for years to come.”

“Chief Whiteley’s legacy was secure before returning for a second tenure as Chief,” City Manager Robert Knodell said. “Yet he answered the call one more time, got the job done, and laid out a path for even greater success moving forward for our Department. He has our gratitude and best wishes for his next chapter”

Knodell tells us that Captain J.R. Keirsey has been selected to be the next Poplar Bluff Police Chief. He will assume the role on November 17th.

A native of Poplar Bluff, Keirsey attended Poplar Bluff High School, Three Rivers College, and the SEMO Law Enforcement Academy. After joining the Poplar Bluff Police Department in 1998, he steadily rose through the ranks for the Department achieving the rank of Captain before serving as Interim Chief earlier this year.

“Chief Keirsey is extremely well-prepared to assume this critical role,” Knodell said. “Working alongside Chief Whiteley for the past six months, he was instrumental in developing a compensation, recruitment, and retention strategy that will strengthen the Department ranks, and keep our citizens and their property safe.”

Whiteley said, "I have had the privilege of working closely with J.R. since I became Chief in June of 2000. During that time, I have watched him progress from Patrol Officer to Shift Supervisor, to C.I.D., and ultimately to Captain of C.I.D. PEDESTRIAN STRUCK AND KILLED BY A VEHICLE IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle Monday evening in Northeast Arkansas.

According to Corning Police Chief Blaine McClung, officers from the Corning Police Department, Clay County Sheriff’s Department, and Arkansas State Police responded to a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle on Highway 62 East near Victory Lake Road.

The pedestrian, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Multiple Poplar Bluff Choir singers have earned state recognition.

According to school officials, soprano Gabby Rushing and bass Cayden Innes were both named to the 2025-26 Missouri All-State Choir.

Frances Nelson was named as a 1st alternate for altos.

Rushing and Innes will perform with the All-State Choir on Saturday, January 31 at Margaritaville Lake Resort in Osage Beach.

A retirement has prompted the joining of two drug stores in Poplar Bluff.

Key Drugs owner Marty Michel has announced that he is retiring. John’s Pharmacy will assume ownership and operation of Key Drugs effective on December 1st.

Officials say that the Key Drugs location at 910 North Westwood Boulevard will close at the end of the business day on November 29.

All patient prescription records will be securely and automatically transferred to the John’s Pharmacy location at 909 West Pine Street.

DONIPHAN MAN FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A CRASH MONDAY AFTERNOON

An area man was flown from the scene of a crash Monday afternoon.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 25 year old Doniphan man was driving on US Highway 160 in Ripley County when his vehicle travelled off the right side of the roadway and struck a culvert.

The driver, who was reportedly not wearing a safety device, was flown to a Memphis hospital with serious injuries.

VETERANS DAY CELEBRATIONS WILL BE HELD TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY

Veterans will be honored during multiple celebrations today in Butler County schools.

The Poplar Bluff Middle School is hosting a Veteran’s Day Parade today. Veterans will be driving through a parade loop around the PBMS campus to be recognized and cheered on by students.

The Parade will begin at 9:15 am.

Only veterans, students, and school staff will be allowed on campus for the event.

The Twin Rivers Elementary and Middle Schools will also be recognizing local veterans during Veterans Day assemblies in both Fisk and Qulin.

The events will begin at 9:30 am at the Qulin Middle School Gymnasium and at 1:30 pm at the Fisk Middle School Gymnasium.

DRIVER EXAMINATION STATIONS TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR VETERANS’ DAY

Driver examinations will not be available across Missouri today due to the holiday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, driver examination stations throughout the state will be closed today in observance of Veterans’ Day.

Officials say that normal operations will resume on Wednesday.

POPLAR BLUFF NATIVE KAMERON MISNER TRADED TO THE ROYALS

Kameron Misner will be playing much closer to home next year.

It was announced Monday that the Poplar Bluff native has been traded from the Tampa Bay Rays to the Kansas City Royals.

Misner hit .213 with five home runs and 22 RBIs in 71 games for the Rays in 2025.

HIGHWAY PATROL INVESTIGATING MISSING PERSON FROM SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating a missing person.

According to Sergeant Bradley Germann, the Hayti Police Department has requested the MSHP Division of Drug and Crime Control to assist in investigating the disappearance of 18 year old Kaniah Jennings, of Portageville.

Jennings was last seen during the evening hours of November 3rd in Hayti. At the time, she was wearing a grey hoodie, black leggings, and white Nike Dunk athletic shoes.

Jennings is a Black female, five feet seven inches tall, and weighing approximately 160 pounds.

MALDEN MAN SENTENCED FOR ASSAULTING HIS FORMER GIRLFRIEND

A Malden man has been sentenced for assaulting his then-girlfriend in 2023.

According to Dunklin County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Ryan Dicus, 29 year old Cameron Kerbyson was convicted in September of three counts of domestic assault in the second degree, and 13 counts of tampering with a victim in a felony prosecution.

The charges stem from an incident in May of 2023 where Kerbyson violently assaulted his then-girlfriend by striking her, throwing her to the ground, and kicking her in the face before attempting to smother her.

Following the arrest, Kerbyson repeatedly tampered with the victim by attempting to convince her not to show up for required court appearances; to claim she filed a false police report, to claim she was “under duress” when she made the statement, and even giving her money.

On Thursday, Kerbyson was ordered to serve four years for each of the 16 felony counts of which he was convicted.

CONTRACTS AWARDED FOR BRIDGE PROJECTS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission has awarded contracts for various bridge projects in Southeast Missouri.

According to officials, an over 1.8 million dollar contract was awarded to Robertson Contractors, for a bridge replacement on Route AA over Drainage Ditch 1 and 10 in Butler County.

A 2.8 million dollar contract was also awarded to Robertson Contractors, for a bridge replacement on Route 67 over Otter Creek in Wayne County.

A $769,000 contract was awarded to Joe’s Bridge & Grading, for a bridge replacement on Route Z over the Main Drainage Ditch in Dunklin County.

Additional information about the projects, including a timeline and what impacts there will be to traffic, will be released prior to the start of construction.

DUNKLIN COUNTY BRIDGE REPLACEMENT TO FORCE CLOSURE OF AREA ROAD THROUGH PART OF APRIL

Route 164 in Dunklin County will be closed through the first part of next year as contractor crews perform a bridge replacement over Lateral Ditch 4 near Rives.

According to MoDOT, the bridge being replaced is located between Route Y and Route NN.

Officials say that work completion is anticipated by Tuesday, April 20. The road will remain closed until the work is completed.

The work zone will be marked with signs. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling near the area.

MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES ANNOUNCES THAT IT WILL ISSUE PARTIAL NOVEMBER SNAP BENEFITS

The Missouri Department of Social Services has announced that it will be issuing partial SNAP Benefits this month.

Officials with the DSS say that the state has received official guidance from the United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Services allowing partial funding to issue November Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.

The department will work closely with their EBT vendor to ensure benefits are issued promptly. Further information on the timeline of benefits being issued will be provided by DSS as it is made available.

EUGENE FIELD TEACHER NAMED OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR

A Poplar Bluff teacher is being recognized for her efforts in the classroom.

Eugene Field Special education instructor Alexa Everett was selected out of over 480 nominations from community members, parents and fellow educators to be named a McDonald’s Outstanding Educator.

The successful nomination came from colleague Jennifer Morin, a speech teacher, who noted that Everett “goes above and beyond,” is “patient and organized," and serves as "a light in their building." The elementary school further acknowledged over its social media that Everett “brings learning to life with hands-on, interactive and engaging lessons.”

Eugene Field's Teresa Webb was named a McDonald’s Outstanding Educator last year and since the recognition program was launched in 2020, Poplar Bluff Schools has celebrated seven awardees in total.

TWO POPLAR BLUFF CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS TO COMPETE IN STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TODAY

Two cross country athletes will represent the Poplar Bluff Mules today in state competition.

Poplar Bluff’s Ava Stotts and Wren Cotrell both qualified for the Class 4 State Championship meet that will be held today in Columbia.

The Class 4 Championship Race is scheduled for 11:45 this morning and can be watched online at MSHSAA.tv.

Twin Rivers will be sending three athletes to the Class 2 State Championship Cross Country Meet on Saturday.

Eli Hequembourg and Will Parker will race at 11 am on Saturday, while Landry Benson will follow at 11:45 am. Both races can also be watched at MSHSAA.tv.

AREA ORGANIZATION ASKING FOR PUBLICS HELP IN FEEDING 20 FAMILIES

An area organization is asking for the community's help in feeding 20 local families this holiday season.

FosterAdopt Connect has announced the launch of their 'Meals That Matter' program.

Officials say that the Thanksgiving meal kit and money drive is taking place through November 10th and each kit or $10 donation will provide a full family meal for four.

Community members are invited to shop from provided meal kit lists and drop off complete kits, or make monetary donations, at FosterAdopt Connect on North Westwood Boulevard in Poplar Bluff.

The organization will assemble and distribute the kits on November 12th and 13th.

MODERN GUN DEER SEASON STARTS THIS WEEKEND IN ARKANSAS

Arkansas hunters are preparing to head to the woods this weekend for the beginning of Modern Gun Deer Hunting Season.

According to officials, the season will open on Saturday and deer hunters have typically checked more than 30,000 deer in the two-day weekend opener.

Arkansas hunters have already harvested and checked more than 47,700 deer so far during archery season, alternative firearms season and last weekend’s youth deer hunt.

Staff at the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission expect many hunting camps will extend their opening weekend even further with the Veterans’ Day holiday falling on the Tuesday after opening weekend.

TEXAS MAN ARRESTED ON MARYLAND RAPE WARRANT IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Authorities in southeast Missouri have arrested a Texas man on a rape warrant.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 50 year old Joseph Poehl, of Iola, Texas, was arrested Wednesday in Wayne County on a felony Allegany County, Maryland warrant for rape 2nd degree and child abuse, among other charges.

Following the arrest, Poehl was held at the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office on no bond.

DEADLINE IS TODAY TO PURCHASE TAGS FOR BULKY ITEM PICKUP IN POPLAR BLUFF

Today is the final day for Poplar Bluff residents to purchase tags for this month’s Bulky Item Pickup.

Residents can purchase bulk item tags from the City Collector’s office at City Hall for $20. The tags entitle you to the removal of four bulk items, such as couches or refrigerators.

No construction materials or small items will be picked up and the program is for residential areas only.

Today is the final day to purchase item tags at City Hall to be included in next week’s pick up, which will be conducted on Wednesday, November 12th.

M.I.L.L.I.E FEST SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY

The 5th annual M.I.L.L.I.E. Fest in Poplar Bluff is this weekend.

The event will begin at 11 am on Saturday in the parking lot across from the Black River Coliseum.

There will be food trucks, vendors, a Kids Zone, and more activities.

All proceeds from the event go to benefit M.I.L.L.I.E., a non-profit organization that gives back to the community through scholarships and is working to provide a facility where community youth can go to participate in getting mentored, tutored, and participate in organized sports.

DISASTER RECOVERY CENTERS OPENING TODAY IN DUNKLIN AND STODDARD COUNTIES

Disaster Recovery Centers will be available this week in Dunklin and Stoddard Counties.

The centers will be located at the Dunklin County Administration Office in Kennett and the Bootheel Regional Planning Commission in Dexter. They will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., today and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday.

Missourians who sustained damage to their primary residence or personal property due to the severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding that occurred from March 30th through April 8th of this year can visit the centers for one-on-one help.

The counties who are eligible include Butler, Carter, Dunklin, New Madrid, Ripley, Stoddard, and Wayne, among others.

At the centers, affected individuals can get help applying for disaster assistance, speak to state or federal representatives, receive updates on their FEMA registration, and more.

FEMA financial assistance may include money for basic home repairs, personal property losses or other underinsured/uninsured disaster-related needs such as childcare, transportation, medical needs, funeral, or dental expenses. The FEMA registration deadline is December 22nd.

SALIVA AND TYLER FARR COMING TO THE BLACK RIVER COLISEUM IN DECEMBER FOR THE CLASH AT THE COLISEUM

A big concert has been announced to finish off 2025 at the Black River Coliseum.

Country music star Tyler Farr will be joined by the legendary rock band Saliva in Poplar Bluff for the Clash at the Coliseum on Saturday, December 27th.

The show will also include Fallen Within, who performed at Bonestock last year.

ELLSINORE MAN ARRESTED IN CARTER COUNTY ON SODOMY CHARGES

A weeks-long effort has led to the arrest of a Southeast Missouri man on sodomy charges.

Carter County Sheriff Alonzo Bradwell tells KWOC News that Christian Clardy, of Ellsinore, has been arrested on three counts of first degree sodomy.

Few details about the arrest have been released, however Bradwell says that Clardy is currently being held without bond.

MUSICAL IMPROV SHOW SET FOR TONIGHT IN POPLAR BLUFF

A one of a kind show will be performed tonight on the campus of Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff.

Your ideas will help form the Improvised Broadway Musical, beginning at 7 pm at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.

The show will be a full Broadway-style musical that is completely improvised by improv actors from Broadway with input from the audience.

ROAD WORK SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route 114 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane for the rest of this week near Morehouse.

According to officials, Missouri Department of Transportation crews will be performing pavement repairs on Route 114 between Route 153 and Route 60 both today and tomorrow.

Work is scheduled to take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

CREWS WORKING TODAY ON SOUTHEAST MISSOURI INTERSTATE

Interstate 155 in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane with a 14-foot width restriction in both the eastbound and westbound lanes as contractor crews perform median barrier wall repairs. 

The section of roadway being reduced is located between mile markers 9 and 10.

Weather permitting, the work will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.

MAN CONVICTED OF TWO COUNTS OF SODOMY IN STODDARD COUNTY

A jury deliberated less than 90 minutes on Tuesday before returning two guilty verdicts for a man who was charged with sodomy.

Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Sawyer Smith tells KWOC News that a Stoddard County Jury has found defendant Robert Lee Grimes guilty for two counts of sodomy first degree - child less than 12 years of age.

Grimes was accused of having inappropriate contact with a child in 2023.

A sentencing date has been scheduled for Wednesday, January 7th.

AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING AFTER BODY FOUND IN RURAL RIPLEY COUNTY

Authorities are investigating after a body was found Tuesday in rural Ripley County.

Sheriff Rad Talburt tells us that the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, Ripley County Coroners Office, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control are all a part of the investigation.

No further details have been released.

THIS WEEK IS MISSOURI WINTER WEATHER PREPAREDNESS WEEK

With the seasons rapidly shifting from summer, to fall, to winter, now is the time to make sure you are prepared for when winter weather inevitably hits.

The Missouri State Emergency Management Agency and National Weather Service are partnering for Winter Weather Preparedness Week this week.

It is suggested that you create a family emergency plan and home emergency kit. Emergency supplies should include bottled water, canned and dry foods, battery-powered radio, flashlights, extra batteries, manual can opener and a first-aid kit.

When power outages are possible, charge cell phones and other devices in advance so you are able to communicate if power is lost.

Assemble a vehicle winter emergency kit. Include extra clothes, a blanket, radio/spare batteries, snacks/water, jumper cables, flares and a shovel/sand or shingles for tire traction.

Avoid driving when conditions could deteriorate. Postpone travel if possible. If driving is absolutely necessary, keep your gas tank more than half full and your cell phone charged.

MISSOURI COLD WEATHER RULE BACK IN EFFECT

The start of November means Missouri residents are protected by the state's "cold weather" rule, which bars cutoffs of heat in freezing weather.

The rule applies to natural gas and electric utilities regulated by the Public Service Commission. It prohibits shutoffs from November through March, whenever the temperature is predicted to fall below 32 degrees in the following 72 hours.

It also provides more lenient payment terms for residents to reconnect natural gas or electrical service.

Municipal utilities, cooperatives, and companies providing propane by truck are not subject to the rule.

TWO ROAD PROJECTS PLANNED FOR TODAY IN THE QULIN AREA

MoDOT crews will be working on two road projects today in the Qulin area.

Officials say that Route 53 in Butler County will be reduced from County Road 212 to Route 51 so crews can perform pavement repairs.

Work for that project will take place from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Crews will then be doing pavement repairs on Route HH between County Road 329 and Route 53. That project is scheduled for 11 am to 4 pm.

ROUTE AC IN STODDARD COUNTY REDUCED THIS WEEK FOR SHOULDER REPAIRS

Route AC in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane this week as MoDOT crews perform work on the shoulder.

The work zone is located from County Road 237 to Prairie Street in Bloomfield.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily through Friday.

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION SAYS SNAP WILL BE PARTIALLY FUNDED AFTER JUDGES’ RULINGS

President Donald Trump’s administration said Monday that it will partially fund SNAP after a pair of judges’ rulings required it to keep the food aid program running.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture had planned to freeze payments to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program starting November 1st because it said it could no longer keep funding it due to the shutdown. The program serves about 1 in 8 Americans and is a major piece of the nation’s social safety net. It costs about $8 billion per month nationally.

It’s not clear how much beneficiaries will receive, nor how quickly beneficiaries will see value show up on the debit cards they use to buy groceries. The process of loading the SNAP cards, which involves steps by state and federal government agencies and vendors, can take up to two weeks in some states.

The average monthly benefit is usually about $190 per person.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the nation’s largest food program, said last month that benefits for November wouldn’t be paid out due to the federal government shutdown.

That set off a scramble by food banks, state governments and the nearly 42 million Americans who receive the aid to find ways to ensure access to groceries.

SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION OPENS DISASTER LOAN OUTREACH CENTER IN VAN BUREN

The U.S. Small Business Administration has opened a Disaster Loan Outreach Center in Carter County.

The center will assist businesses, private nonprofit organizations, and residents affected by severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding that occurred between March 30th and April 8th.

SBA customer service representatives will be on hand at the Disaster Loan Outreach Center in Van Buren to answer questions and assist with the disaster loan application process.

The center is located at the Carter County Courthouse and will be available from 8 am to 4 pm Monday through Thursday and 10 am to 4 pm on Fridays.

Officials say that no appointment is necessary, walk-ins are welcome.

MAN IN CUSTODY AFTER TWO PEOPLE SHOT ON HALLOWEEN

A man is in custody after two people were shot on Halloween in Southeast Missouri.

Sergeant Tyler Rowe with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that officers were flagged down at an intersection near West Gladys Friday night by an individual who had been shot.

As officers investigated and searched for the crime scene, a second victim with gunshot wounds was located inside an apartment.

Both victims were transported by ambulance to an area hospital for their injuries and are in stable condition. The names of the victims are not being released.

Detectives and officers were able to determine that a domestic disturbance occurred at the apartment, resulting in a male suspect, identified as Kyle Hill, of Sikeston, allegedly shooting both victims.

Hill was arrested on a no-bond warrant Sunday, charging him with domestic assault 1st degree, assault 1st degree, two counts of armed criminal action, two counts of unlawful use of weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

THREE FACING CHARGES IN CONNECTION TO MULTIPLE THEFTS IN POPLAR BLUFF

Three people are facing charges in connection to multiple thefts in the Poplar Bluff area.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, on Saturday officers were dispatched to a location on South Westwood for a stealing report.

During an investigation, officers learned three subjects were involved in thefts from numerous stores in Poplar Bluff.

Officials say that Chaka Howard, Jaqueshia Howard, and Nicole Word have all been charged with four counts of stealing.

Chaka and Jaqueshia Howard are also facing a charge of resisting arrest.

MAN ARRESTED ON RAPE CHARGE IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Authorities in Northeast Arkansas have arrested a man following a reported rape.

According to the Paragould Police Department, last week a victim reported to officers that Larry Manes had raped her.

Detectives investigated the complaint and were provided with audio evidence that corroborated the allegation and Manes reportedly made incriminating statements during an interview.

Manes was taken into custody on a felony charge of rape. He is being held in the Greene County Detention Center on no bond.

DIAPER AND WIPE DRIVE TO BE HELD TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

An area organization will be collecting items today to support children in our community.

The 2025 Kindness Shower Diaper and Wipe Drive is scheduled for today.

A drop off location will be set up in the Main Branch of the Poplar Bluff Library, collecting diapers, pull-ups, and baby wipes from 2 to 4 pm.

Donations go to help support families affected by the child welfare system in Southeast Missouri.

POPLAR BLUFF LIONS CLUB CHILI DAY TO BE HELD TODAY

The Poplar Bluff Lions Club is hosting their annual Chili Day today.

Chili will be available for pickup from 11 am to 5:30 pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Grand Avenue. Dine in and delivery will be available from 11 am to 1:30 pm.

Route 53 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction beginning today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform bridge maintenance over the Black River.

The bridge is located near Qulin, between County Roads 647 and 202.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through Thursday.

SMOKE DETECTORS TO BE GIVEN AWAY TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

Poplar Bluff area residents will have the opportunity to get a free smoke detector today.

Missouri Highlands Healthcare will be giving away smoke detectors today in the parking lot of Larry Hillis Dodge in Poplar Bluff, while supplies last.

The event, between 10 am and 1 pm, is a partnership between Missouri Highlands Healthcare, Butler County Emergency Management Agency, and River Radio.

The Poplar Bluff Fire Department will also be there with their new fire trucks to talk about fire safety.

MAN REPORTEDLY SHOT DURING ALTERCATION ON HALLOWEEN

An investigation has started after a man was shot on Halloween.

According to the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, on Friday, deputies and state troopers responded to a county residence for a report of a shooting.

An investigation determined that an argument had happened that resulted in one of the residents flourishing a knife and the other resident shooting the first resident in the leg with a handgun.

The gunshot victim was transported to an area hospital where he was treated and released.

Officials say that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

DONIPHAN SOFTBALL AND CHEERLEADING FINISH IN SECOND PLACE IN STATE COMPETITION

It was a successful weekend for the Doniphan Donettes.

The Donettes Softball team finished in second place in the Class 3 State Championship Tournament after beating Cassville 13-3 on Friday in the Semifinal and falling to Chillicothe 1-0 on Saturday in the State Championship Game.

The Doniphan Cheerleading Squad also finished in 2nd at the Missouri Cheerleading Coaches Association 3A Large session.

Also at the MCCA State competition, Poplar Bluff finished in 6th in the 5A Small session, Neelyville finished in 2nd in the 1A Small session, and East Carter finished in 1st in the 1A Large session.

SEX OFFENDER ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGEDLY TRYING TO ENTER SOUTHEAST MISSOURI SCHOOL

A registered sex offender has been taken into custody in Southeast Missouri after allegedly attempting to enter an area school.

On October 29th, a report was made that a male subject, wearing all black clothing, attempted to enter the Malden Elementary School.

The man kept asking school officials if they taught the constitution, stars and stripes, or about the US government and stated that he wanted to see the curriculum. The witness also stated the male was mumbling, stuttering, and hard to understand.The incident occurred at around 3:30 pm.

A Malden Police officer later made contact with the man, who was identified as 47 year old George White, of Malden. White resisted the officer and attempted to walk away before being taken into custody.

A check was conducted which said White was an active registered sex offender.

White has been charged with felony attempted burglary 1st degree and sex offender loitering within 500 feet of a public park, swimming pool, athletic complex, museum, or nature center, along with multiple misdemeanors.

A portion of Route 164 in Dunklin County will be closed beginning today as contractor crews replace the bridge over Deering Ditch near Rives. 

According to MoDOT, Route 164 will be closed between Route TT and Route PP.

This road will remain closed until the work is complete, which is anticipated by February 27, 2026.

MULES FOOTBALL DISTRICT PLAYOFFS TO BEGIN TONIGHT

The Poplar Bluff Mules will begin their football district playoff campaign tonight.

The Mules earned a five seed in the Class 5, District 1 playoffs and will travel to the four seed Fox Warriors for the Quarterfinal matchup at 7 pm.

Should the Mules win tonight, they will travel to top seed Farmington next week for the District Semifinal.

Halloween is today and Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whiteley has some tips to help keep your children safe while trick or treating.

Chief Whiteley says parents should establish a route for children, making sure they stay within familiar areas and surroundings. An adult should accompany young children. Parents should also remind kids not to enter strangers' homes or cars, and to avoid homes without an outside light on.

MOTORISTS REMINDED TO BE AWARE OF HALLOWEEN FESTIVITIES TODAY

Halloween is today and state officials are reminding motorists to be alert for children who are trick or treating.

Colonel Michael A. Turner, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, says that motorists should be aware that children could dart in front of your vehicle while trying to get treats.

Slow down and drive with extra caution. Expect an increase in the number of slow-moving vehicles in neighborhoods as motorists pick up and drop off trick-or-treaters. Please be courteous to other drivers and stay alert for trick-or-treaters of all ages.

Many adults also enjoy dressing up and visiting haunted houses or attending gatherings for Halloween. If you are driving to a costume party, make sure your costume doesn’t hamper your vision. If you attend a Halloween party that includes alcohol, designate a sober driver for the trip home.

Young Missouri hunters will be out in the woods this weekend for the early portion of youth firearms deer season.

The early youth portion is scheduled for November 1st and 2nd. Harvest hours are one half hour before sunrise to one half hour after sunset.

Young hunters must be at least six years old and no older than 15 on opening day. They can take only one antlered deer during the firearms deer season.

Additional regulations and permits are available online at the Missouri Department of Conservation website.

The late portion is scheduled for November 28th through the 30th.

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME ENDS THIS WEEKEND

The sun will begin rising an hour earlier on Sunday.

Daylight Saving Time will come to an end at 2 am Sunday morning. Remember to set your clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday night.

This is also a good time to check or change the batteries in your smoke detector.

Daylight Saving Time will start again on Sunday, March 8th, 2026.

CARTER COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE AWARDED GRANT TO HIRE TWO FULL TIME POSITIONS

A Southeast Missouri law enforcement agency has announced that they have been chosen for a grant that will allow them to hire two new full time employees.

The Carter County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded funding through the competitive DOJ COPS HIRE Grant program.

The total funding amount, including the required local match, is $268,000, which will go to hiring a school resource officer for the East Carter School District and a drug and crime detective.

This grant was written by Samantha Majors and will provide funding for the positions for three years.

DONIPHAN RESIDENTS TO LINE CITY STREETS THIS MORNING FOR SOFTBALL AND CHEER TEAMS

Doniphan residents will be lining the city streets this morning to wish their girls softball team and cheer squad good luck as they depart for state.

The Donettes softball team will be heading to the State Semifinals in Springfield where they will take on the Cassville Lady Cats.

First pitch is scheduled for noon on Friday.

The cheer squad will be participating in a state competition in Columbia.

The teams will leave from the High School at 8:30 am this morning and travel down Summit Street and Walnut Street before circling around the courthouse.

The parade will then go back up Walnut to US Highway 160, before circling back and returning to the High School.

MULTI-AGENCY OPERATION LEADS TO ARREST OF PERSON OF INTEREST IN DOUBLE HOMICIDE

A person of interest in a double homicide has been taken into custody in Northeast Arkansas.

The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division, Greene County Sheriff's Office SWAT team, Paragould Police Department, and the U.S. Marshals Service apprehended 32 year old Jacob Lowell Smith on Tuesday at an abandoned house trailer in Greene County.

Smith was wanted as a parole absconder and also identified as a person of interest in the deaths of 54 year old Tonya Stallings, and 33 year old Ashley Stallings, both of Ash Flat.

On October 21, deputies with the Fulton County Sheriff's Office responded to a residence in Ash Flat after a report of an unresponsive person. Upon arrival, the two women were found deceased inside the residence. Both victims were transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory to determine the manner and cause of death.

Officials say that Smith is currently being held at the Greene County Detention Center on the absconder warrant as the investigation continues.

DEXTER MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN RIPLEY COUNTY CRASH

One person was injured in a Ripley County crash Wednesday morning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 56 year old Dexter man was driving on Missouri Highway 142 when his vehicle crossed the center of the roadway and struck another vehicle.

The man suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital. No other injuries were reported.

MISSOURI GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES APPROPRIATIONS FOR FOOD ASSISTANCE AS GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN CONTINUES

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has announced additional steps his administration is taking to expedite food assistance for at-risk Missourians, given the impending loss of November Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits due to the federal government shutdown.

Governor Kehoe has directed a $10.6 million fund transfer from the Senior Services Growth and Development Fund to Missouri Area Agencies on Aging. This funding will go to provide meals to seniors.

Additionally, Governor Kehoe has ordered a $5 million distribution to Missouri food banks using Temporary Assistance for Needy Families funding. This action takes the place of a regular appropriation typically issued later in the year but is being issued now given an increase in need due the loss of SNAP benefits.

Missourians in need of food assistance or looking to volunteer or donate are directed to Feeding Missouri – a coalition of six Missouri Food Banks working to provide hunger relief to every county in the state.

FAFSA FRENZY EVENT SCHEDULED FOR TODAY AT THREE RIVERS COLLEGE

An event has been scheduled for today in Poplar Bluff to help students and their families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

FAFSA Frenzy is scheduled for 9 am to 6 pm at the testing center in the Westover Administration Building on the campus of Three Rivers College.

The event is open to everyone, whether or not you plan to attend Three Rivers.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN CONVICTED ON STATUTORY SODOMY AND CHILD MOLESTATION CHARGES

A southeast Missouri man was convicted Tuesday afternoon of multiple crimes involving a child.

According to Mississippi County Prosecuting Attorney, Claire Poley, August Porter, of Mississippi County was found guilty by a jury on 12 felony counts, including statutory sodomy in the first degree, statutory sodomy in the second degree, child molestation in the third degree, and endangering the welfare of a child.

The jury’s decision came after a two day trial where they heard testimony from two minor victims. Porter remains in custody pending sentencing, which will be scheduled by the Court.

The case was co-tried by Poley and Cape Girardeau County Assistant Prosecutor Stephen Killen. The charges were consolidated from both Mississippi and Cape Girardeau Counties so that all evidence and counts could be heard in a single trial.

CLAY COUNTY BRIDGE TO BE CLOSED BEGINNING NEXT WEEK FOR REPLACEMENT

Crews in Clay County will be closing a bridge beginning next week to begin a replacement project.

According to the Clay County Office of Emergency Management, the bridge on the south end of Clay County Road 461, just north of the intersection of Clay County Road 492, will be closed for demolition and replacement starting Monday.

Officials say the bridge will remain closed until an elevated and reinforced structure is completed by the contractor, which is estimated to be by February 1st.

This project is being funded by a Hazard Mitigation Grant from the Arkansas Division of Emergency Management.
