CEREMONY FOR FALLEN SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN TO BE HELD AT VETERANS MEMORIAL WALL

A special program will be held on Memorial Day in Poplar Bluff.

According to Larry Kimbrow, the 2025 Memorial Day Ceremony is scheduled for 11 am on Monday at the Butler County Veterans Memorial Wall in front of the Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff.

The event is free and open to the public. The ceremony will pay tribute to the nation's servicemen and women who have fallen in service to their country.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved to the VFW Post #6477, next to the United Gospel Rescue Mission.

MISSOURI GOVERNOR TO BE IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI NEXT WEEK TO VISIT AREAS AFFECTED BY TORNADOES

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe will be making an appearance in Southeast Missouri next week.

Governor Kehoe will be visiting Scott County on Monday to visit areas impacted by the severe storms and tornadoes on May 16th.

The Governor will also speak at the Sikeston Memorial Day Service at the Sikeston Veterans Park.

POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOLS TO OFFER SUMMER MEALS FOR COMMUNITY CHILDREN

The Poplar Bluff School District will be helping to feed area children this summer.

According to school officials, beginning on May 28th Poplar Bluff Schools, in partnership with Chartwells, will be offering free meals for breakfast and lunch for all community children at multiple area locations.

The meals will be available at the High School, Junior High School, Middle School, and Kindergarten, as well as O’Neal and Eugene Field Elementary Schools.

MOTORISTS ASKED TO USE CAUTION IN THE AREA OF THE 100 MILE YARD SALE

Traffic is once again a concern as the annual 100 mile yard sale kicks off in Southeast Missouri.

The Memorial Day weekend event begins in Kennett and runs along Route 25 all the way to Jackson.

Motorists should remember that there is more traffic and more congestion along Route 25 this weekend than any other and drivers should be alert and look for pedestrian traffic.

MISSOURI SQUIRREL AND BLACK BASS SEASONS TO BEGIN ON MAY 24TH

Missouri squirrel and black bass seasons are set to begin at the end of this week.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, the hunting season on eastern gray and fox squirrels runs from May 24th through February 15th of next year.

Allowed methods include shotguns, rifles, and other legal firearm methods, as well as archery. Squirrels may also be harvested with cage-style traps during the hunting season as long as hunters have a valid Small Game Hunting permit.

The daily limit for hunting, including the use of cage-style traps, is ten and the possession limit is 20. Hunters must have a permit valid for hunting small game or be exempt.

Anglers may catch-and-keep black bass, such as largemouth, smallmouth, spotted and Kentucky bass, from May 24th through February 28th of next year. Black bass can be found statewide but have a closed season part of the year in most streams south of the Missouri River.

In most state waters, the daily limit on black bass is six. Fish taken from most rivers and streams must be 12-inches long. Additional regulations may apply to specific waters or areas. Anglers must have a valid fishing permit or be exempt.

HIGHWAY PATROL ENCOURAGES DRIVERS TO HAVE A SAFE HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Memorial Day weekend is upon us and the Missouri State Highway Patrol wants the public to make safety a priority.

Officials tell KWOC News that every available trooper will be on the road enforcing traffic laws and assisting motorists during the long holiday weekend.

Troopers will focus their attention on hazardous moving violations, speed violations, and impaired drivers.

Over the 2024 Memorial Day holiday weekend, 10 people died and 486 were injured in 1064 traffic crashes across Missouri.

Motorists or boaters in need of assistance or who want to report a crime can use the Highway Patrol's Emergency Assistance number at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone.

MAN FLOWN TO ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL AFTER HITTING DEER ON BUTLER COUNTY ROADWAY

A man was flown to a regional hospital Wednesday morning after hitting an animal in Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 61 year old man, from Poplar Bluff, was driving on Highway O in northern Butler County when he struck a deer on the roadway.

The man suffered moderate injuries in the crash and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

DEADLINE FOR STORM DEBRIS PICKUP IN POPLAR BLUFF IS FRIDAY

The deadline is coming up for Poplar Bluff residents to get city assistance in picking up storm debris.

According to the Poplar Bluff Street Department, the city will no longer pick up debris from the March 14th tornado after Friday.

A post on the Street Department Facebook Page says that if you have hired someone to cut or trim trees that have green leaves on them you or they will be responsible for their removal.

MISSING/POSSIBLY ENDANGERED PERSON FROM NEW MADRID MIGHT BE IN THE POPLAR BLUFF AREA

Updating a story we have been following for you over the past month authorities say that a missing person, who may be endangered, could possibly be in Butler County.

According to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Office, deputies are assisting the New Madrid Police Department with a missing person investigation involving Caleb Powell, of New Madrid.

Powell went missing in late April and is described as a white male who was last seen wearing a dark-colored t-shirt and dark pants. He was last seen driving a gray Chevrolet Silverado with a Missouri license of 9CF C81.

Officials with the Poplar Bluff Police Department say that Powell could possibly be in the Poplar Bluff area.

DONIPHAN TO HOST PUBLIC HEARING IN EARLY JUNE

The city of Doniphan will be hosting a public hearing early next month.

City officials say that the hearing will be to discuss the city’s application for the Community Development Block Grant program.

Doniphan officials are proposing to demolish dilapidated buildings to eliminate slum and blight areas within the city limits. The total project cost is estimated to be up to approximately $200,000.

All interested citizens and groups are encouraged to attend the hearing at 4 pm on June 2nd at the Doniphan City Hall.

CENTER STAGE TO HOST AUDITIONS THIS MONTH FOR UPCOMING PRODUCTION OF “ANNIE”

Auditions will be held later this month for the upcoming Center Stage production of “Annie.”

According to officials with Three Rivers College, Suzy Abney will be directing the Broadway-style production in September at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center. Auditions will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., May 29th through the 31st.

Center Stage is Three Rivers College’s blended theater company of students, college employees, and community members.

ROAD PROJECT IN WAYNE COUNTY TO BE IN PLACE FOR OVER A WEEK ON ROUTE AA

Route AA in Reynolds and Wayne Counties will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction beginning today as contractor crews perform pavement preservation treatments.

The work zone is located from Route 49 in Wayne County to the end of state maintenance in Reynolds County near Piedmont.

Flaggers and a pilot car will be in place to guide traffic.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Monday, June 9.

DANNY WHITELEY RETURNS AS POPLAR BLUFF POLICE CHIEF

A familiar face will be taking the reins at the Poplar Bluff Police Department.

Poplar Bluff City Manager Robert Knodell has confirmed with KWOC News that Danny Whiteley will be rejoining the department as the new Poplar Bluff Police Chief.

Whiteley retired from the position in 2022 ending an over two decade tenure at the seat. His successor, Mike McClain, announced his own retirement in March.

Knodell says that the search took longer than initially expected because of the tornado. Knodell added that acting Chief JR Keirsey did an amazing job leading the Department through challenging times, and will remain a key leader in the PBPD command staff.

Poplar Bluff Mayor Shane Cornman says that "Poplar Bluff citizens want public safety to be enhanced and revitalized. There is no better choice than the man who defined excellence in Poplar Bluff law enforcement for a generation, Danny Whiteley."

Knodell tells us, “Poplar Bluff is a great place to call home because of Danny Whiteley’s longtime service, and our future is brighter because he has answered the call yet again. He is the right leader at the right time to make our City safer, stronger, and more prosperous, and I am honored to bring one of my heroes home.”

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey tells KWOC News, “Danny Whiteley has devoted his life to excellence in law enforcement, and I congratulate Rob Knodell for bringing him back as Chief of Police in the great City of Poplar Bluff. SURVEY RELEASED FOR STODDARD AND SCOTT COUNTY TORNADO THAT KILLED TWO PEOPLE

The National Weather Service has released the survey for a tornado that killed two people in Southeast Missouri last week.

According to weather officials, the 16 mile long EF-3 tornado started in eastern Stoddard County, along County Highway Y, approximately 5 miles southeast of Bell City.

It removed the roof of a house shortly after touching down and then continued east into Scott County.

The worst damage was found in the Sloanville Drive area where numerous homes were heavily damaged or completely destroyed. The two fatalities occurred along this road. Numerous more homes were either significantly damaged or completely destroyed just west of I-55 and continuing east to Woodhaven Estates.

The tornado lifted just east of Highway O about 3 miles west of Diehlstadt. Officials say that the tornado had a maximum width of 200 yards and also resulted in 10 injuries.

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON STATUTORY SODOMY CHARGE

A Poplar Bluff woman was taken into custody this week in Butler County on a statutory sodomy charge.

According to a probable cause affidavit, 40 year old Megan Joyce Hicks is accused of having inappropriate contact with an underage subject.

Hicks has been charged with 1st degree statutory sodomy. Her bond was set at $100,000 and she has since posted bond.

COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE NATION CELEBRATE EMS WORKERS FOR EMS WEEK

This week communities across the nation are celebrating some of their first responders for the work they do to keep their residents safe.

This week is National Emergency Medical Services week. In 1974, President Gerald Ford authorized EMS Week to celebrate EMS professionals and the important work they do in our nation's communities.

The EMS Week campaign brings the country together to honor the accomplishments of EMTs, paramedics and other critical team members, in addition to building awareness of their vital role in prehospital medical care, emergency management and community healthcare.

According to the American College of Emergency Physicians and the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, this year is the 51st time EMS Week has been observed and features the theme, “We Care. For Everyone.”

KENNETT POLICE RESPOND TO TWO REPORTS OF SHOTS BEING FIRED, RESULTING IN ONE ARREST

Police in Kennett responded to multiple reports of shots being fired in the city Sunday morning.

Shortly after midnight on Sunday, officers responded to an area of North Baldwin, where one subject reported that his vehicle had been hit by a bullet that was fired by an unknown subject.

The investigation into that incident is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact the Kennett Police Department.

Later Sunday morning, officers responded to another call of shots being fired on North Everett Street. That investigation led to a subject, identified as Rantrell Caruthers, being arrested and charged with armed criminal action, assault 1st degree, property damage, and unlawful use of a weapon.

Officials say that Caruthers is being held in custody. It was not released if Caruthers was connected to the first shots fired report.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN KENNETT AREA

Route 412 in Dunklin County will be reduced today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.

The work zone is located from Route U to Route NN near Kennett.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through 7 p.m.

SEVERE WEATHER CHANCES CONTINUE TODAY ACROSS SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Chances of severe weather will continue today throughout Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, the region will be under a slight to enhanced risk of severe storms through this evening.

Chances of severe weather will be greater for the more eastern portion of our listening area.

Officials say that tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail are all possible. There is also the possibility of heavy rainfall, which may lead to localized flooding of low-lying and flood prone locations.

MISSOURI GOVERNOR REQUESTS PRELIMINARY DAMAGE ASSESSMENTS FOR SEVERE STORMS ON MAY 16TH

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has announced that the state has requested the Federal Emergency Management Agency participate in joint preliminary damage assessments for multiple Southeast Missouri counties in response to Friday’s severe weather.

A total of seven counties and the City of St. Louis was a part of the request, including New Madrid, Scott, Stoddard, and Wayne County in Southeast Missouri. Officials say this request begins the process of obtaining federal disaster assistance.

Joint PDA teams are made up of representatives from FEMA, the State Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Small Business Administration and local emergency management officials.

The Governor also requested that President Trump issue a federal Emergency Declaration for the State of Missouri, which would authorize Direct Federal Assistance and up to $5 million in immediate funding to the state to support emergency protective measures and debris removal.

Beginning Wednesday, six teams will survey and verify documented damage to determine if Individual Assistance can be requested through FEMA. Individual Assistance allows eligible residents to seek federal assistance for temporary housing, housing repairs, replacement of damaged belongings, vehicles, and other qualifying expenses.

MAN FOUND DEAD FOLLOWING SHOOTING IN PORTAGEVILLE

One man was found dead late Saturday night following a shooting incident in Portageville.

According to New Madrid County Sheriff Joey Higgerson, at approximately 11:30 pm Saturday, deputies responded to a residence in Portageville to assist the Portageville Police Department with a shooting investigation.

Officers determined that the victim had been shot by her husband, who then turned the gun on himself.

When Portageville Officers arrived on-scene the victim was able to give them a statement about what happened, and evidence recovered at the scene corroborated her statement.

58 year old William James was pronounced dead at the scene by the New Madrid County Coroner. The victim was flown to a Memphis hospital.

Higgerson says that the incident is still under investigation.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FACING MULTIPLE CHARGES INCLUDING KIDNAPPING AND ARMED CRIMINAL ACTION

A Poplar Bluff man is in custody on multiple charges stemming from an incident this weekend.

According to court records, 34 year old Lamar Brown was arrested on multiple felony charges, including kidnapping, armed criminal action, 2nd degree domestic assault, and unlawful use of a weapon.

Few details have been released about the incident, which reportedly occurred on Saturday.

Brown is being held in custody on a $75,000 bond.

TWO AREA PROSECUTORS RECOGNIZED BY INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ARSON INVESTIGATORS

Two local prosecutors have been recognized by the International Association of Arson Investigators.

The Missouri Chapter of the IAAI held their 41st annual conference last week.

During the conference, the organization presented their 2025 Prosecutor of the Year Award to both Dunklin County Prosecutor Nicholas Jain and Dunklin County Assistant Prosecutor Ryan Dicus.

PAVEMENT PRESERVATION PROJECT SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TODAY IN WAYNE COUNTY

Route 143 in Wayne and Iron Counties will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction over the next couple of weeks as contractor crews perform pavement preservation treatments.

The project is located from Route 34 in Wayne County to Route 49 in Iron County. Flaggers and a pilot car will be in place to guide traffic.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Tuesday, June 5.

STORM SYSTEM WHICH INCLUDED EF-3 TORNADO CAUSES TWO DEATHS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Two people died Friday evening in Southeast Missouri during a storm system that crossed the area bringing with it winds of over 150 miles per hour.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a preliminary survey found that an EF-3 tornado tracked along a 16 mile path in eastern Stoddard and Scott Counties.

The tornado had peak winds of 152 miles per hour.

According to Angie Rogers, the Scott County 911 Emergency Service Board Executive Director, two people died as a result of injuries sustained from the storm, with ten others being injured.

A brief EF-1 tornado with peak winds of 110 mph also occurred in northern Scott county.

The American Red Cross was also set up at the Miner Convention Center to assist displaced families.

Hail and wind damage was also reported across Southeast Missouri, including in the Qulin and Portageville areas.

Thousands of people lost power during the storms but crews worked hard to restore electricity to those affected, with Ozark Border and Ameren only reporting a handful of customers still without service as of Sunday afternoon.

SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE FOR MONDAY NIGHT AND TUESDAY

As the area continues to recover from last week’s severe weather, another risk is developing for this week.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, there is a marginal to enhanced risk of severe weather for tonight in Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas.

Hazards could include large hail and damaging winds.

The chances of severe weather increase as you move west across our listening area.

Weather officials say that almost the entire region will be under a slight risk of severe weather Tuesday afternoon and evening, with hazards once again including large hail and damaging winds.

ONE FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A CRASH EARLY SATURDAY MORNING NEAR BERNIE

One person was flown from the scene of a head on collision early Saturday morning near Bernie.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 36 year old male, from Malden, was driving on Highway 25 when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck an oncoming vehicle head on.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 34 year old male from Bernie, was flown to a St. Louis hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the first vehicle received moderate injuries and was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

POPLAR BLUFF PARKS AND RECREATION WELCOMING SUMMER WITH EVENT NEXT MONTH

An event to mark the beginning of Summer will be held next month at Whiteley Park in Poplar Bluff.

Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation is presenting Welcome Summer 2025 from 4 to 7 pm on Saturday, June 7th.

The event, sponsored by Missouri Highlands Healthcare, will include a cruise in, live band, food trucks, yard games, a dunk booth, crafts, and more.

MISSOURI AND ARKANSAS POLICE OFFICERS TO CRACKDOWN ON RESIDENTS NOT WEARING THEIR SEAT BELT

A new seat belt enforcement campaign is set to begin today in Missouri and Arkansas.

Statewide law enforcement will be participating in a click it or ticket seat belt mobilization through June 1st to help increase seat belt use among residents and reduce highway fatalities.

According to officials, More than 6 out of l0 people killed in 2024 Missouri traffic crashes were unbuckled. Even with all the advancements in automobile safety, a seat belt remains a person's single greatest defense in the event of a crash.

LIGHT INSTILLATION TO CAUSE DELAYS ON BUSINESS 67 IN POPLAR BLUFF OVER THE NEXT MONTH

Business 67 in Butler County will intermittently be reduced to one lane over the next month as contractor crews install roadside lights.

According to MoDOT, crews will be working from Katy Lane to Industrial Park Road in Poplar Bluff.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Friday, June 20.

CHANCES OF SEVERE WEATHER RETURN TO THE AREA TODAY

We are once again looking at chances of severe weather today in Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a risk for severe thunderstorms exists this afternoon into this evening.

Supercells with a large hail and tornado risk may then form into a large complex of storms with a significant damaging wind threat.

The area could see up to baseball size hail, hurricane force winds of over 70 miles per hour, and possibly even EF-2 or greater tornadoes.

MAJOR DISASTER DECLARATION APPROVED FOR NINE COUNTIES IN ARKANSAS

The federal government has approved a major disaster declaration for nine counties in Arkansas, making federal disaster assistance available to supplement recovery efforts in the areas affected by severe storms and tornadoes from March 14th and 15th.

According to FEMA, Randolph and Greene Counties in Northeast Arkansas were two of the counties included in the declaration.

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-interest loans to cover uninsured property losses and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.

Individuals and business owners who sustained losses in the designated areas can begin applying for assistance by registering online at DisasterAssistance.gov, by calling 1-800-621-3362 or by using the FEMA App.

COMMUNITY HEALTH OUTREACH SCHEDULED FOR TODAY AT BUTLER COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT

The 4th annual Butler County Health Department Community Health Outreach will be held today.

The event is scheduled for 10 am to 1 pm at the Health Department on Main Street in Poplar Bluff.

There will be food available from the SEMO Food Bank, health screenings, resources from over 20 community partners, and much more.

POPLAR BLUFF EARLY CHILDHOOD SCREENING SET FOR NEXT WEEK

The Poplar Bluff Early Childhood Center will soon host its final screening for the 2025/26 school year.

According to school officials, the final screening day will take place on Tuesday, May 20th.

KIDS FISHIN’ FUN DAY SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND

Take your kids fishing this weekend with the Southeast Missouri Sportsmen Association.

The association is hosting its annual free Kids Fishin’ Fun Day on Saturday, behind New Covenant Church on Kanell Boulevard in Poplar Bluff. Registration will begin at 7 am with the event starting at 8 am.

Attendees are asked to bring their own fishing poles and lunch will be provided.

LUCKY LEPRECHAUN 5K COMING UP ON MAY 17TH

A sea of green will be overtaking McLane Park in Poplar Bluff this weekend.

The Lucky Leprechaun 5k was rescheduled from its original date in March to this Saturday, May 17th. Check-in will begin at 10:30 am, with the run starting at 11 am.

The cost to enter is $30 with proceeds going to benefit the all inclusive Robert’s Adventure Playground and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards.

TURKEY HABITAT WORKSHOP TO BE HELD THIS WEEKEND IN WAYNE COUNTY

The Missouri Department of Conservation will be hosting a workshop on wild turkey habitat this weekend in Wayne County.

The MDC invites landowners to learn what makes quality nesting and brood-rearing habitat for wild turkeys from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 17 in Hiram, near Greenville.

Advance registration is required and can be completed online at mdc.mo.gov. Officials say that spots are limited.

Participants will see first-hand completed habitat practices on a private farm, have an opportunity to talk with the landowner, hear from wildlife biologists, and learn from MDC staff about habitat improvement incentive programs available to Missouri landowners.

This is an outside event with lunch provided. Participants are asked to bring a lawn chair and wear appropriate clothing for the weather. Closed-toe shoes are recommended.

POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION SET FOR TONIGHT

The Poplar Bluff High School Class of 2025 will be receiving their diplomas tonight.

The PBHS Graduation Ceremony will be held tonight beginning at 7 pm at the Black River Coliseum. Doors will open at 6 pm and only people with tickets will be admitted.

Officials say that no admittance will be permitted after 7 pm.

For those who cannot attend, a live stream of the graduation ceremony will be available on the Mules Media youtube page.

EUGENE FIELD ELEMENTARY ONE OF EIGHT IN MISSOURI NAMED AS GOLD STAR SCHOOL

An elementary school in Southeast Missouri was one of eight schools across the state to be named as a Gold Star School.

According to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Eugene Field Elementary School in Poplar Bluff was chosen for the program, which recognizes schools that perform at high academic levels or that perform at high levels while serving a significant proportion of disadvantaged students.

The Missouri Gold Star Schools program uses the same criteria for nomination as the National Blue Ribbon Schools program.

OVER TWO WEEK LONG ROAD PROJECT UNDERWAY IN WAYNE COUNTY

Route 34 in Wayne and Bollinger counties will be reduced to one lane with a 15-foot width restriction for over two weeks as contractor crews perform pavement preservation treatments.

The section of roadway affected is located from Route 67 in Wayne County to County Road 808 in Bollinger County. Flaggers and a pilot car will be in place to guide traffic.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Friday, May 30.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY ON ROUTE WW IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Route WW in Dunklin County will be reduced as MoDOT crews perform pavement repairs.

According to officials, the work zone will be located from County Road 206 to Morris State Park Road near Campbell.

FORMER MISSOURI GOVERNOR AND UNITED STATES SENATOR CHRISTOPHER “KIT” BOND PASSES AWAY AT THE AGE OF 86

A former Missouri Governor and United States Senator has passed away.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has announced that Christopher “Kit” Bond died Tuesday in St. Louis at the age of 86.

Bond served as Missouri Governor for two terms, from 1973 to 1977 and then from 1981 to 1985.

Following his term as Governor, Bond was elected to the United States Senate where he served from 1987 to 2011.

DIVING CREWS FIND GUN POSSIBLY CONNECTED TO 2024 SHOOTING IN RIPLEY COUNTY

Diving crews were mobilized in Ripley County on Tuesday in connection to a 2024 shooting investigation.

Ripley County Sheriff Rad Talburt confirmed to KWOC News that a gun was recovered by the dive crews in the Gatweood area.

Ripley County Chief Deputy David Sutton says that the weapon is believed to have been connected to a drive-by shooting from early December in Ripley County.

The gun will be sent to the Division of Drug and Crime Control Crime Lab for testing.

CITY OF POPLAR BLUFF EARNS MISSOURI BLUE SHIELD DESIGNATION

Poplar Bluff is the latest Southeast Missouri community to earn the Missouri Blue Shield designation.

The Missouri Department of Public Safety has announced that Poplar Bluff and the Poplar Bluff Police Department was selected for the designation, recognizing the community for its commitment to enhancing public safety and supporting law enforcement.

Achieving the Blue Shield designation allows communities to access state grants for law enforcement training and equipment.

ONE FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A CRASH ON US HIGHWAY 60 NEAR DUDLEY

A juvenile from North Carolina was flown from the scene of a crash Monday evening near Dudley.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at around 5 pm when a vehicle crossed the center line of US Highway 60 and struck another vehicle.

The first vehicle then travelled off the right side of the roadway, became airborne, overturned, and struck an embankment.

A juvenile and adult passenger in the vehicle each suffered serious injuries and the juvenile was flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital. The adult passenger, along with the driver, were taken by ambulance to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

No injuries were listed for the occupants of the second vehicle.

STODDARD COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR CULVERT REPLACEMENT

Route ZZ in Stoddard County will be closed over two days as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

The section of roadway is located from County Road 626 to County Road 642 near Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. both today and tomorrow.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN THE PARMA AREA

Route D in New Madrid County will be reduced today so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform bridge maintenance.

The section of roadway being reduced is located between County Roads 556 and 540 near Parma.

JUVENILE TRANSPORTED TO AREA HOSPITAL AFTER ACCIDENTALLY SHOOTING HIMSELF IN THE FOOT

A juvenile was injured in an accidental shooting over the weekend.

According to the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, on Saturday deputies responded to an area residence for a report of an accidental shooting.

A juvenile male had reportedly shot himself in the foot while handling a pistol which he thought was inoperable.

The victim was transported to an area hospital by ambulance.

DONIPHAN MAN ARRESTED ON TWO COUNTS OF STATUTORY RAPE

A Doniphan man has been taken into custody in Ripley County on multiple counts of statutory rape.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 58 year old Thomas Dodd was arrested Monday afternoon on charges of 1st degree statutory rape and 2nd degree statutory rape.

Following the arrest, Dodd was held in the Ripley County Detention Center.

OVER 46,000 BIRDS HARVESTED DURING SPRING TURKEY SEASON

Missouri hunters harvested over 46,000 birds during turkey season.

Preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation shows turkey hunters checked 46,562 birds during Missouri’s 2025 regular spring turkey season, which ran from April 21st through May 11th.

Young turkey hunters also harvested 4,449 turkeys over the youth weekend at the beginning of April, bringing the overall 2025 spring turkey harvest to 51,011.

Officials say that last year, young turkey hunters harvested 3,739 turkeys over the spring youth season and hunters harvested 43,380 during the regular spring season for a 2024 spring season total harvest of 47,119.

TWO INJURED IN THREE VEHICLE CRASH IN CARTER COUNTY

A weekend crash in Carter County resulted in injuries to two people.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on County Road 251, ten miles north of Grandin, when a vehicle side swiped another vehicle, causing the second vehicle to overturn.

The second vehicle was then struck by a third vehicle.

The drivers of the second and third vehicles suffered serious injuries in the crash and were transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

WOMAN SUFFERS SERIOUS INJURIES IN BLOOMFIELD AREA CRASH

A woman was transported to an area hospital on Saturday after being involved in a crash near Bloomfield.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the 71 year old woman, from Advance, was driving on Missouri Highway 25 when her vehicle ran off the roadway, struck a parked vehicle, and overturned.

The woman suffered serious injuries in the crash.

CREWS TO BE INSTALLING LIGHTS BEGINNING TODAY ON OAK GROVE ROAD IN POPLAR BLUFF

The Northbound and Southbound Route 67 ramps in Butler County may be impacted beginning today as contractor crews install lights at the intersection of the ramps and Oak Grove Road in Poplar Bluff.

Officials say that work will take place from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Friday, May 30, weather permitting.

Motorists are urged to use caution while traveling near the area.

POPLAR BLUFF TEACHER HONORED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI

A Poplar Bluff teacher is being recognized for her advocacy in helping students with disabilities transition to life after graduation.

The University of Missouri has named Anita Cates the Pre-Employment Transition Services Teacher of the Year for the Southeast Region.

Cates, who has served as Poplar Bluff High School's individualized education program facilitator for six years, was chosen from over 1,000 eligible special education teachers representing more than 100 secondary schools across the region.

Cates tells KWOC News that students enrolled in the program receive assistance in establishing independence following high school, whether that means continued education, improving employability through resume building and job interview preparation, or accessing other services through the statewide assistance network.

NEELYVILLE TO HOST PUBLIC HEARING ON TUESDAY

The city of Neelyville will be hosting a public hearing this week.

City officials say that the hearing will be to discuss the city’s submission of an application for the Community Development Block Grant program.

The city is proposing to pave and repair various city streets. The total project cost is estimated at approximately $525,000.

All interested citizens and groups are encouraged to attend the hearing at 5:45 pm on May 13th at the Neelyville City Hall.

NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK STARTS ON SATURDAY

National Safe Boating week starts on Saturday and Missouri officials are taking the opportunity to stress the importance of safety while on the waterways.

Colonel Michael Turner, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, tells KWOC News that National Safe Boating week is purposefully scheduled just prior to Memorial Day weekend, which many people consider the kickoff to the boating season.

Boaters are encouraged to arrange for a thorough inspection of your boat prior to taking it out on the water.

The Patrol’s marine operations troopers are available to inspect the required equipment on your boat, at your request, to make sure you’re in compliance with state law.

On Saturday, Troopers will be set up at the Redman Recreational Area Boat Ramp in Wappapello from 10 am to noon to conduct inspections.

CONTRACTS AWARDED FOR PAVEMENT IMPROVEMENTS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission has awarded contracts for various road projects in Southeast Missouri.

According to officials, a five million dollar contract was awarded to Pace Construction Company, for pavement resurfacing on various routes in Butler County, including Business 67 and Business 60.

An approximately 2.7 million dollar contract was awarded to Joe’s Bridge and Grading for bridge replacements in Dunklin and Pemiscot Counties.

Additional information about the projects, including a timeline and what impacts there will be to traffic, will be released prior to the start of construction.

BRIDGE DECK SEALING PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route 25 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform deck sealing. 

The bridge involved in the project is located between Old Bloomfield Road and Conder Street in Dexter.

PBHS PRINCIPAL NAMED MoASSP REGIONAL PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR

The principal of Poplar Bluff High School has been named the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals regional Principal of the Year.

According to school officials, Southeast Region officers surprised Dr. Valerie Ivy with the award alongside the superintendent cabinet and members of the principal’s family during a schoolwide assembly for spring sports in the gymnasium.

Ivy will be recognized again in September during the organization's conference in Columbia.

According to MoASSP, the selection committee seeks an educator who demonstrates creativity and has a positive impact on the school system; ensures the school climate reflects high morale; is willing to take risks to improve student learning; moves actively to implement the building's objectives; works collaboratively; anticipates emerging problems; and engages the community.

Ivy has served as an administrator at PBHS since 2017, spending the last three years in her current role after having worked her way up from assistant principal.

POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL PLAYER SELECTED FOR ALL STAR GAME

A Poplar Bluff High School baseball player has been selected to play in a statewide All-Star series this summer.

Noah Spain was chosen to play in the 2025 Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association Senior All-Star Series game on Saturday, June 14th.

The game between the Class 5 and Class 6 Seniors will be played at Southern Boone High School in Ashland.

The All-Star Series are three games made up of the best senior baseball players from each of the six classes in the state of Missouri.

EMINENCE MAN DROWNS IN JACKS FORK RIVER

An Eminence man has died after falling into the Jack’s Fork River in Shannon County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 69 year old man fell into the water at around 1:30 pm Thursday, was unable to resurface, and was swept downstream by the current.

The man was later pronounced dead by the Deputy Shannon County Coroner.

TRC COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY SCHEDULED FOR TONIGHT

The 57th Annual Three Rivers College Commencement ceremony is scheduled for tonight in Poplar Bluff.

The event will begin at 6 pm at the Libla Family Sports Complex.

The Commencement Address will be provided by Presiding Circuit Judge Kacey Proctor, the 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient.

The ceremony will be live streamed on the Three Rivers College Youtube page.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI CITY AWARDED GRANT TO EVALUATE ITS WASTEWATER SYSTEM

A Southeast Missouri city will be receiving grant money to help improve the city’s infrastructure.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded a $62,500 Clean Water Engineering Report Grant to the city of Qulin to evaluate its wastewater system.

Qulin will use the grant to identify improvements that will enable the system to continue meeting water quality standards and provide reliable service, as well as to reduce stormwater infiltration into sewer collection pipes.

The facility plan should be complete in December 2026.

AREA LETTER CARRIERS TO COLLECT FOOD FOR LOCAL FOOD PANTRIES

Area letter carriers will be collecting food for local food pantries this weekend.

Saturday, May 10th will mark the 33rd anniversary of the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

On Saturday, letter carriers from across the area will be collecting non-perishable food donations. Residents just need to leave a non-perishable food donation in a bag by your mailbox on the day of the food drive.

The donations will go directly to local food pantries.

2025 SARAH JARBOE WHITE UCAN WALK COMING UP THIS WEEKEND

This weekend will bring the 2025 Sarah Jarboe White UCAN walk back to Poplar Bluff.

According to the United Cancer Assistance Network, the annual walk will be held on Saturday, May 10th, beginning at 9:30 am at the Danny Bell Cancer Center.

Officials say that almost $400,000 has been raised over the 13 years of the event.

The money has gone to help cancer patients with transportation, utilities, groceries, medical expenses, housing, nutritional supplements, and many other necessities while they are going through chemotherapy and radiation and are unable to continue to work.

KWOC’S FRANKIE AND CHANCE CASTEEL HONORED FOR THEIR WORK KEEPING THE AREA SAFE DURING STORMS

KWOC’S own Frankie Casteel has been honored by the state of Missouri for his weather coverage.

Both Frankie, and his son Chance, were presented a resolution Wednesday by Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe and Missouri State Representative Hardy Billington, honoring them for their efforts informing the public during the recent severe weather and tornadoes that affected the area.

Frankie and Chance both were in Jefferson City Wednesday to accept the resolution and talk with the Governor.

DUDLEY WOMAN ARRESTED ON METH DISTRIBUTION CHARGE IN WAYNE COUNTY

A woman has been taken into custody in Wayne County on drug related charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 56 year old Loretta Barnett, of Dudley, was arrested Tuesday night on charges of distribution of a controlled substance - methamphetamine and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

Barnett also reportedly had a felony warrant out of Stoddard County for possession of a controlled substance.

Following the arrest, she was held at the Wayne County Jail.

MULES BASEBALL TEAM TO HOST FUNDRAISING GOLF TOURNAMENT

The Poplar Bluff Mules Baseball team will be hosting a fundraising golf tournament this weekend.

The event has been scheduled for 12:30 pm on May 10th at the Ozark Ridge Golf Course in Poplar Bluff.

DRIVER EXAMINATION STATIONS TO BE CLOSED ON MULTIPLE DATES THIS MONTH

Missouri state officials are reminding motorists that driver examinations will not be available on select days this month.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, driver examination stations throughout the state will be closed today in observance of Harry Truman’s birthday.

Driver Examination Stations will also be closed on Monday, May 26th, for Memorial Day.

DEADLINE COMING UP TO PURCHASE TAGS FOR BULKY ITEM PICKUP

Friday is the final day for Poplar Bluff residents to purchase tags for this month’s Bulky Item Pickup.

Residents can purchase bulk item tags from the City Collector’s office at City Hall for $20. The tags entitle you to the removal of four bulk items, such as couches or refrigerators.

No construction materials or small items will be picked up and the program is for residential areas only.

Friday is the final day to purchase item tags at City Hall to be included in next week’s pick up, which will be conducted on Tuesday, May 12th.

MEASLES CASE CONFIRMED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

State officials have confirmed a case of measles located in Southeast Missouri.

Officials with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services have confirmed that a case of measles has been located in an adult resident of New Madrid County.

Exposure is believed to be limited, and known contacts are being identified and contacted. There is no indication of widespread public exposure.

The case is not linked to the prior case or prior exposures reported in Missouri.

MAN FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A CRASH IN BUTLER COUNTY

One man was flown from the scene of a crash Tuesday morning in Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at around 10:30 am on Highway 158 in Harviell when a vehicle ran off the side of the roadway before hitting a ditch and a utility pole.

The driver, a 75 year old man from Caruthersville, suffered serious injuries and was flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

EARTHQUAKE RECORDED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

An earthquake shook parts of Southeast Missouri Tuesday morning.

According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 2.3 earthquake was recorded at 5:24 am on Tuesday.

The quake was centered approximately 19 miles southeast of Kennett and had a depth of over three miles.

FILING TO BEGIN FRIDAY FOR BOLLINGER COUNTY SHERIFF SPECIAL ELECTION

Filing is set to begin this week for an upcoming special election in Bollinger County.

The Bollinger County Commission has announced that a special election will be held on Tuesday, July 8th for the purpose of electing a sheriff for the unexpired term.

Former Sheriff Casey Graham announced last month that he would step down on May 1st.

Candidates can file for the election beginning at 8 am on Friday. The final day of filing will be on Tuesday, May 20th.

DUNKLIN COUNTY IS THE LATEST TO EARN MISSOURI BLUE SHIELD DESIGNATION

MAN STRUCK BY A VEHICLE WHILE RIDING LAWN MOWER NEAR POPLAR BLUFF

A man riding a lawn mower was struck by a vehicle over the weekend near Poplar Bluff.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 46 year old man from St. Louis was riding the mower on Highway T shortly after 11 pm Saturday night when he was struck by a vehicle from behind.

The mower then ran off the side of the road and struck a tree.

The man suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR 2025 POPLAR BLUFF SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM

There is still time for parents to get their children registered for Summer School in Poplar Bluff.

Officials say that this year’s summer school will be held Monday through Friday from May 28th through June 25th and is an opportunity for students to earn back credits lost due to low attendance and/or failing classes during the regular school year.

Free breakfast and lunch will be provided for summer school students. Driver’s Education classes will also be available.

STATE OFFICIALS CAUTION RESIDENTS TO WATCH OUT FOR TEXT SCAMS

Missouri state officials are warning residents to be on the lookout for ongoing nationwide text scams.

The Missouri Department of Revenue has received a large increase in calls reporting phishing texts. These texts are often threatening, claiming to be from the Missouri Department of Revenue or Department of Motor Vehicles and may include a warning regarding unpaid traffic violations, outstanding toll charges, or fines owed.

Officials say that these texts are not from the Missouri Department of Revenue and are not legitimate. The department will not send requests for payment or request personal information via text message.

If you receive one of these phishing texts, do not click on any links or respond. Just delete the text.

Route D in Reynolds and Carter Counties will be closed this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

The closure is located from County Road 123 to Route 21.

OVER $164,000 RAISED DURING THE 2025 RIVER RADIO ST. JUDE RADIOTHON

Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas have come together to help the kids at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The final total for the 2025 River Radio St. Jude Radithon on May 1st and 2nd was $164,589.

The total includes individual donations, collections from businesses and local events and the 246 people who decided to become partners in hope.

FEDERAL DISASTER DECLARATION REQUESTED IN CONNECTION TO EARLY APRIL STORMS

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has requested that President Donald Trump approve a major disaster declaration to provide federal assistance in a total of 26 Missouri counties.

The request is in response to the severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding that caused widespread destruction across the state from March 30 to April 8. Six deaths were confirmed due to severe storms during the period.

Based on the documented damage and emergency response costs, Governor Kehoe is also requesting FEMA Individual and Public Assistance for multiple counties including Butler, Carter, Dunklin, New Madrid, Ripley, Stoddard, and Wayne. Pemiscot County was only included in the request for Public assistance.

SHAYNE TALBURT PROMOTED TO MSHP LIEUTENANT IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

There is a new member of the Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop E command staff in Southeast Missouri.

Captain Jason Cluver, commanding officer of Troop E has announced the promotion of sergeant Shayne Talburt to the rank of lieutenant.

Talburt was appointed to the Patrol in January of 2008. Since 2021, he has served as sergeant and supervisor of marine operations for Troop E.

CITY OF MALDEN IS THE LATEST TO EARN MISSOURI BLUE SHIELD DESIGNATION

A southeast Missouri community has earned the Missouri Blue Shield designation.

City officials say that Malden has officially received the Missouri Blue Shield designation, recognizing the community for its commitment to enhancing public safety and supporting law enforcement.

Last month, both the city of Kennett and Carter County were among the first in the state to be included in the program.

Achieving the Blue Shield designation allows communities to access state grants for law enforcement training and equipment.

BRIDGE APPROACH REPAIRS TO CAUSE ISSUES FOR LARGE TRUCKS AND FARM EQUIPMENT TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route Y in Stoddard County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge approach repairs.

The section of roadway affected is located from Route N to County Road 585 near Bell City. Officials say that while the roadway will be open to local passenger vehicle traffic, large trucks and farm equipment should seek alternate routes while work is underway.

Weather permitting, work will be performed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

MODOT CREWS TO CLOSE DUNKLIN COUNTY ROAD EARLY THIS WEEK FOR BRIDGE MAINTENANCE

Route 164 in Dunklin County will be closed for the early part of this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.

The closure is located in the Rives area, from Route PP to Route TT.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both today and tomorrow.

FIVE INJURED, ONE SERIOUSLY, IN CRASH ON US HIGHWAY 60

Five people were injured in a two vehicle crash Tuesday morning in Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on US Highway 60, seven miles east of Poplar Bluff, when a vehicle struck another vehicle, causing the second vehicle to run off the roadway and overturn.

The driver of the first vehicle, a 40 year old male from Charleston, suffered serious injuries in the crash and was flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

Four people in the second vehicle received minor injuries and were transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

JEREMY DAVID GREEN APPOINTED AS NEW MADRID POLICE CHIEF FOLLOWING RESIGNATION OF SHANE GRISSOM

New Madrid citizens have a new police chief.

On Monday, Shane Grissom announced that he was resigning as the Chief of Police for the city of New Madrid. Grissom says the decision was made in the interest of his family and himself, and that he will continue to serve as Fire Chief and as a part-time patrol officer.

City officials announced Monday night that Jeremy David Green will take over as Police Chief. Green is a veteran of the United States Army, and has served various roles in law enforcement for 30 years.

Sacred Heart School’s 28th Annual Fiesta Auction has been scheduled for this weekend.

NEW MADRID AUTHORITIES SEARCHING FOR MISSING/POSSIBLY ENDANGERED PERSON

Authorities in New Madrid are searching for a missing person who may be endangered.

According to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Office, deputies are assisting the New Madrid Police Department with a missing person investigation involving Caleb Powell, of New Madrid.

Powell is a white male who was last seen wearing a dark-colored t-shirt and dark pants. He was last seen driving a gray Chevrolet Silverado with a Missouri license of 9CF C81.

Anyone who has information on Powell’s whereabouts is asked to contact the New Madrid Police Department at 573-748-5901 or call 911.

WAPPAPELLO WOMAN ARRESTED ON DRUG TRAFFICKING CHARGE

A Wappapello woman was taken into custody over the weekend on multiple felony charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 26 year old Sara Allen was arrested Sunday afternoon in Stoddard County on felony charges of trafficking of methamphetamine and possession of a controlled substance.

Allen is also facing a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, she was held at the Stoddard County Jail.

MAN ARRESTED IN BUTLER COUNTY ON FIREARM AND DRUG CHARGES

Authorities have arrested a man in Butler county on drug and firearm charges.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 56 year old Danny Duff, of Oxly, was taken into custody Sunday afternoon on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine, along with charges of driving while intoxicated - drugs and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Duff was held at the Butler County Jail following the arrest.

AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING SHOOTING IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Authorities in Southeast Missouri are investigating an incident where multiple people were shot over the weekend.

According to Charleston DPS Director Robert Hearnes, at around 1:30 am Saturday morning, officers were notified of a person shot near the intersection of Lee and Vine Street in Charleston.

During an investigation of the incident, it was determined that the shooting took place on Oliver Street, and that three people had been shot.

All three people were transported to area hospitals with serious injuries and their current conditions were not released.

The incident is still under investigation and anyone with information related to the shooting is asked to contact the Charleston DPS at 573-683-3737.

The tournament, featuring seven area schools, will begin today on the campus of Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff.

Today’s lineup will include 3 seed Twin Rivers battling 6 seed Puxico at 1:30 pm, followed by 4 seed Doniphan taking on 5 seed East Carter at 3:30 pm, and finishing with a matchup between 2 seed Clearwater and 7 seed Naylor at 5:30 pm.

NEW TRC COMMUNITY CHOIR TO PERFORM TONIGHT

The new Three Rivers College Community Choir will be putting on a performance tonight.

The Three Rivers College Patrons of the Arts is presenting the new Community Choir at 7 p.m. at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI CITY AWARDED GRANT TO EVALUATE ITS WASTEWATER SYSTEM

A Southeast Missouri city will be receiving grant money to help improve the city’s infrastructure.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded a $50,000 Clean Water Engineering Report Grant to the city of Malden to evaluate its wastewater system.

Malden will use the grant to identify improvements that will enable the system to continue meeting water quality standards and providing reliable service, as well as to reduce stormwater infiltration into sewer collection pipes.

The facility plan should be complete in December 2026.

ENFORCEMENT OF REAL ID TO BEGIN MAY 7TH

Anyone who will be taking a flight in the later half of this year will need to make sure that their ID is Real ID compliant.

According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, the federal Real ID enforcement deadline is May 7th.

Beginning that day residents of every U.S. state and territory will be required to present a REAL ID-compliant driver license or ID card, or another form of ID accepted by the Transportation Security Administration, to board federally regulated domestic flights.

If you plan on flying in the future but do not want to apply for a REAL ID, you can present another Transportation Security Administration approved acceptable form of ID such as your U.S. passport.

Also beginning May 7th, individuals must present a REAL ID-compliant driver license or ID card, or another form of acceptable ID, to access federal facilities and to enter nuclear power plants.

A Missouri-issued REAL ID-compliant driver license or ID card will have a star in the upper right-hand corner.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS SET FOR THIS WEEK IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

Route E in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs. 

The section of roadway is located from Route H near Canalou to Route D near Lilbourn.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

PEMISCOT COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED THIS WEEK FOR CULVERT REPLACEMENT

Route DD in Pemiscot County will be closed this week so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace a culvert under the roadway.

The section of roadway being closed is located from County Road 551 to County Road 570.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily through Thursday.

POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL DISTRICT AWARDED GRANT FOR SCHOOL BASED THERAPIST

The Poplar Bluff School District school-based therapist will be able to get additional certification thanks to a grant.

According to school officials, the District has been awarded an $8,000 competitive grant to certify its school-based therapist in play therapy, a research-developed intervention designed for young students.

A total of a dozen schools and organizations in rural communities throughout central and southern Missouri recently received a quarter-million dollars through the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, in partnership with the Louis L. and Julia Dorothy Coover Charitable Foundation.

Jodi Powell, the district's licensed therapist, will begin the training through the Heartland Play Therapy Institute in Kansas City in February. Besides ancillary expenses for travel, the remaining funds will be used to purchase play therapy supplies such as feeling charts, games and interactive toolkits.

AREA LAW ENFORCEMENT TO HOST DRUG TAKE BACK EVENT

TWO PEOPLE ARRESTED IN STODDARD COUNTY ON METH CHARGES

Two people were taken into custody Wednesday evening in Stoddard County on felony meth charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 24 year old Chelsea Lee, of Sikeston, was arrested shortly after 6:30 pm on charges of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine, endangering the welfare of a child, and driving while intoxicated with a child less than 17 in the vehicle.

Less than 15 minutes later, troopers in Stoddard County arrested 43 year old Richard Wilkins, of Poplar Bluff, on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine.

It was not released if the two arrests were connected to each other.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN TO APPEAR IN COURT TODAY ON CHILD MOLESTATION CHARGES

A Poplar Bluff man is scheduled to appear in court today following his arrest on child molestation charges.

According to a probable cause affidavit, 42 year old Joshua Hensley is accused of having inappropriate contact with a victim who was less than fourteen years of age.

Hensley has been charged with three counts of 1st degree child molestation and a warrant was served for his arrest on Tuesday.

He is scheduled to make his initial appearance in a Butler County Courtroom this morning.

No bond has been set.

RIVER RADIO TO HOST ST. JUDE RADIOTHON NEXT WEEK

Next week River Radio will be devoting 24 hours of air time to help the kids at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

SEVEN YEAR OLD CHILD ONE OF FOUR PEOPLE INJURED IN STODDARD COUNTY CRASH

A young child was seriously injured in a two vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly before 5 pm when a vehicle struck the rear of another vehicle on Highway 25, two miles north of Advance.

A seven year old child in the first vehicle received serious injuries in the crash. The drivers of each vehicle received moderate injuries, and a passenger in the second suffered minor injuries.

All four subjects were transported to an area medical center.

MISSOURI HUNTERS CAN APPLY FOR ELK AND BEAR PERMITS BEGINNING IN MAY

Missouri hunters will be able to apply for bull elk and bear permits in May.

The Missouri Department of Conservation will offer five permits to hunt bull elk in Missouri this fall with at least one permit designated for qualifying landowners that own property in Carter, Reynolds, or Shannon counties and the remaining permits being for qualifying Missouri residents.

MDC has designated the elk archery portion to run from October 18th through October 26th and the elk firearms portion to run from December 13th through December 21st.

The MDC will also offer 600 permits for the taking of a maximum of 40 black bears during the 2025 Missouri black-bear hunting season this fall, from October 18th through October 31st.

Only Missouri residents who will be at least 11 years old by the first day of the hunt for which they are applying are eligible to apply. The application period will be from May 1st to May 31st and all permits will be assigned through a random drawing.

There are multiple ways to apply for each permit including by calling 1-800-392-4115 or by going online to mdc.mo.gov/buypermits.

EAST CARTER COUNTY R-2 STUDENTS WIN MODOT TRASH CAN DECORATING CONTEST

A Carter County school has been chosen as one of the winners of a statewide trash can decorating contest.

East Carter County R-2 won the 6th through 8th grade category as well as the grand prize of the MoDOT “No MOre Trash” contest.

MoDOT sponsors the contest as part of Missouri’s “No MOre Trash!” campaign to raise awareness about and discourage littering. The contest encourages students from kindergarten through 12th grade to join the fight against litter by decorating and displaying a large trash can with the “No MOre Trash!” logo and a litter-prevention message using a variety of creative mediums.

According to Sara Hoefer with East Carter County R-2 school district, the students organized a cleanup effort to collect trash around their campus and along a local creek as a part of their entry “Don’t Get Hooked on Litter.”

The school will receive a check for $200 for the category win as well as $600 and a trophy as the grand prize winner. The project will be on display in the MoDOT Highway Gardens building at this year’s Missouri State Fair in Sedalia, in August.
