OVER 240 NEW CASES OF CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE REPORTED IN MISSOURI

Over 240 new cases of Chronic Wasting Disease have been reported in Missouri deer.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, it has confirmed 243 new cases of CWD across 35 counties, including seven counties who have had their first CWD-positive case.

The CWD-positive cases were found through sampling and testing of more than 36,000 deer during the past deer-hunting season and post-season targeted-removal efforts with most cases being from hunter-harvested deer submitted for sampling.

CWD is a 100% fatal disease in white-tailed deer and other members of the deer family. The disease has been attributed to significant deer population declines in other states and officials say it threatens Missouri’s deer population, hunting culture, and economy.

Those new cases bring the total number of CWD positives found in the state to 815 over 46 counties since the first positive CWD case was found in wild deer by MDC in early 2012. Although the number of CWD-positive counties increased, officials say that CWD management efforts have kept infection rates low and less than one percent of samples tested positive for CWD.

MISSOURI ANGLERS ASKED TO REPORT AND KILL ANY NORTHERN SNAKEHEAD FISH THEY CATCH

Missouri anglers are being asked to report and kill any northern snakehead fish they catch in the state.

The northern snakehead fish is a long bodied, predatory fish that is not native to the U.S. This fish’s head resembles a snake, thus its name. Its body can grow up to 3 feet long with python-like coloration and pattern.

Unlike most fish, the northern snakehead can breathe air, which allows survival in poorly oxygenated water or out of water for several days if their skin stays moist. They can also slither across land to return to water.

Snakeheads are an invasive species native to Asia. They’re aggressive predators, preying on native species, and competing for resources.

The MDC says that it is illegal to import, export, sell, purchase, or possess a northern snakehead fish in Missouri.

Anyone who catches or sees a northern snakehead is asked to report it to MDC’s Southeast Regional Office at 573-290-5730.

MOTORISTS REMINDED TO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE THROUGH FLOODED ROADS

Area residents are being encouraged to have a plan ready in case flooding were to occur in their area.

According to the National Weather Service, everybody should have a way to stay informed about the latest weather dangers. You should also learn which roadways are likely to flood in your area and find an alternative route so you can avoid them.

Never drive through fast-moving waters; even a small amount of fast-moving water can sweep a slow-moving vehicle off the roadway. If your vehicle becomes stuck in rising water, get out quickly and move to higher ground.

If you live in a flood prone area, it is also smart to have bags packed so you are ready to leave at a moment’s notice. Don’t forget to have items for your pets as well.

If it looks like it is going to flood in your area, residents are urged to be proactive. Leave before flooding starts to avoid getting stranded.

EXPERTS WARN RESIDENTS TO KEEP ELECTRICAL SAFETY IN MIND WHEN DOING SPRING PROJECTS

Spring is here and the longer days will inspire homeowners to get outdoor projects underway. But before getting started, it is important to be aware of the electrical safety hazards you may encounter.

KWOC News spoke with Ameren fire safety engineer Tim Frankenberg, who says that a little prevention can go a long way to keeping your family safe.

A good rule of thumb is to keep electric equipment at least 10 feet away from wet areas. You should also plug into ground fault circuit interrupters, which are designed to shut off the power as needed to prevent a shock.

If you will be digging, make sure to call 811 to have your underground utilities marked so you don’t accidentally hit a line.

Before plugging into an exterior electrical socket, double-check that your cords, lights or fans are rated for outdoor use. Look for labels on packaging that clearly mark them as suitable for outdoor use.
