Ahead of the beginning of classes, KWOC News spoke with Poplar Bluff Superintendent Scott Dill who had a message for parents.
"Good morning and welcome to the new school year. We’re excited to have everyone back. We know that everyone's anxious about the new school year. On this first day of school we have just a few reminders for you.
Please first and foremost be safe and be patient. We know that there's a lot of people out on the road, a lot more than normal and have been all summer, so as you are dropping your kids off at school this morning, please know that there's going to be a lot of people in line. It will probably take a little bit longer than normal. Please be safe, be aware and look for kids crossing and make sure that we are keeping everyone safe at all times.
The same goes for this afternoon. As you are picking kids up and we are rolling buses out, please know that process, it probably will take a little bit longer these first couple days. But that's one of the reasons we start on a Thursday, we get the school year going, work out the kinks and then we start again on Monday and we move forward from there.
So just work with us, be patient, allow yourself some extra time, and just know that it will probably take a little bit longer these first few days."
Multiple area schools will also be beginning classes today, including Advance, Bloomfield, Campbell, Kennett, Malden, Richland, Senath-Hornersville, Twin Rivers, and Van Buren.

STATE OFFICIALS SEEKING PUBLIC’S INPUT ON POSSIBLE REGULATION CHANGE AT WAPPAPELLO LAKE
State officials are asking for the public’s input about a possible regulation change concerning fishing at Wappapello Lake in Wayne County.
According to Missouri Department of Conservation, crappie are the most popular fish sought by anglers fishing the lake and under the existing regulation, anglers may harvest a daily limit of 30 white and black crappie combined with a minimum length of 9 inches.
Under the proposed regulation change, there will be no minimum length limit for crappie. The daily limit will remain at 30 crappie, but not more than 15 of those fish could be above 9 inches.
Officials say that the proposed regulation change would allow anglers to harvest more of the slow growing black crappie, while preventing overharvest of white crappie.
Two public meetings will be held in September to discuss the proposed change. The first meeting is scheduled for 6 to 8 pm on September 17th at New Home General Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff. The second meeting will be held on September 18th at the Greenville Elementary Gymnasium from 6 to 8 pm.
