SCHOOL YEAR TO BEGIN TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF AND OTHER AREA COMMUNITIES

The new school year is set to begin today in Poplar Bluff.

Ahead of the beginning of classes, KWOC News spoke with Poplar Bluff Superintendent Scott Dill who had a message for parents.

"Good morning and welcome to the new school year. We’re excited to have everyone back. We know that everyone's anxious about the new school year. On this first day of school we have just a few reminders for you.

Please first and foremost be safe and be patient. We know that there's a lot of people out on the road, a lot more than normal and have been all summer, so as you are dropping your kids off at school this morning, please know that there's going to be a lot of people in line. It will probably take a little bit longer than normal. Please be safe, be aware and look for kids crossing and make sure that we are keeping everyone safe at all times.

The same goes for this afternoon. As you are picking kids up and we are rolling buses out, please know that process, it probably will take a little bit longer these first couple days. But that's one of the reasons we start on a Thursday, we get the school year going, work out the kinks and then we start again on Monday and we move forward from there.

So just work with us, be patient, allow yourself some extra time, and just know that it will probably take a little bit longer these first few days."

Multiple area schools will also be beginning classes today, including Advance, Bloomfield, Campbell, Kennett, Malden, Richland, Senath-Hornersville, Twin Rivers, and Van Buren.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER EIGHT PUPPIES FOUND ABANDONED

A Poplar Bluff man has been arrested in connection to the discovery of a box of abandoned dogs on Wednesday.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, Animal
Control Officers discovered eight pitbull mix puppies abandoned in a cardboard box at the intersection of Harper and Sanders Streets. The puppies appeared malnourished and not of age to be weaned from their mother.

Officers later made contact with Daryl Scarlet, who was found to possess the mother of the puppies, along with one puppy from the same litter. Scarlet was questioned and initially denied the abandoning the puppies. However, he later admitted to being responsible for the action.

Scarlet was placed under arrest and was held at the Butler County Justice Center pending the filing of formal animal neglect charges. Officials say that the mother and additional puppy were seized and Scarlet also signed a release of ownership form, releasing rights to the animals to the Poplar Bluff Animal Shelter.
