WAYNE COUNTY MAN ADMITS TO PRODUCING AND DISTRIBUTING CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE MATERIAL

A 23 year old Wayne County man will be sentenced in November after admitting to distributing child sexual abuse material that he produced as a minor.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, Tanner Stevens pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of receiving child pornography.

Officials say that Stevens took pictures of two minors when he was also a minor and uploaded them to social media when he was 21.

An investigation led to Stevens’ cellular phone, which contained over 100 videos and over 400 images containing child sexual abuse material.

Stevens' sentencing is scheduled for November 17 where he faces a penalty of five to 20 years in prison.

CORNING AND PIGGOTT AMONG SCHOOLS BEGINNING CLASSES TODAY

Several districts in Northeast Arkansas will be starting their school year today.

The Corning, Pocahontas, Greene County Tech, and Piggott School Districts, among others, are all set to begin classes this morning.

School openings will continue tomorrow in Northeast Arkansas with Marmaduke and Lawrence County opening their doors.

FRESHMAN ORIENTATION AT POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL TO BE HELD NEXT WEEK

The date is coming up for Freshman orientation at Poplar Bluff High School.

Officials say that orientation will begin at 1 pm on Tuesday, August 18th.

Students will get to learn more about life at the High School, get their class schedule, pick up their school laptop, learn the layout of the campus, and meet their advisory class.

Orientation will be followed by the Poplar Bluff High School open house from 5 to 6:30 pm.

INCOMING STUDENTS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT TRC CAMPUS AT READY RAIDER TOUR DAY THIS FRIDAY

Incoming students will be able to get a feel for the Three Rivers College campus at an event this Friday.

TRC is inviting incoming students to participate in Ready Raider Tour Day on Friday, August 14, a one-on-one campus walkthrough before the start of the fall semester.

Officials say that these tours will give new students the opportunity to walk through their fall class schedules, locate classrooms and key campus resources, and ask questions about campus life before classes begin.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE SET FOR POPLAR BLUFF FALL TENNIS LEAGUE

The deadline has been set to register for the 2026 Poplar Bluff Fall Tennis League.

According to Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation, the final day to register is August 21st. League play will begin on August 31st, with matches played at Poplar Bluff Middle School and Hillcrest Park.

MULTI-MONTH BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT UNDERWAY IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

Route 84 in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction for multiple months as construction crews replace the bridge over Drainage Ditch 6.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Drainage Ditch 6 is located near Hayti.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Monday, November 30.

POPLAR BLUFF MULES GATORADE GAME SET FOR THIS WEEKEND

The Poplar Bluff Mules football team will be kicking off the fall season this week with the annual maroon/white scrimmage.

The Mules Football Gatorade Game will be held Saturday at 7 pm at Poplar Bluff High School.

Officials say that they will be taking sports drink donations at the door for admission.

E-BIKE RIDER THAT WAS STRUCK BY A VEHICLE IN KENNETT HAS DIED

Updating a story we have been following for you, an E-bike rider that was flown to a regional hospital last week after being struck by a Highway Patrol vehicle has died.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 47 year old Kennett man was riding the bike on Floyd Street in Kennett Thursday afternoon when he failed to stop at a stop sign and travelled into the path of the patrol vehicle.

The rider was flown to a Memphis hospital following the crash. He was pronounced dead Sunday afternoon.

ROYAL REGISTRATION IS THIS WEEK FOR TWIN RIVERS SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Twin Rivers School District will be holding a two day registration event for students this week.

Royal Registration is scheduled for noon to 6 pm today for students whose parent or guardian’s last name begins with A-K and Thursday for students whose parent or guardian’s last name begins with L-Z. Both will be held at Twin Rivers High School in Broseley.

There will be booths set up to distribute student class schedules and allow students to have their school picture taken.

MOTORISTS ASKED TO WATCH FOR STUDENTS ON THE ROADWAYS

Many students in Northeast Arkansas will be returning to school this week and authorities are asking motorists to be prepared.

Drivers should expect a change in traffic patterns ─ school buses and parents taking their children to school and many young drivers will join other motorists on the road and affect the morning and afternoon commute. Also expect an increase in pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

Drivers, when you see a stopped school bus, stay alert and follow the law. Children may not be aware of traffic and dart unexpectedly into the roadway.

Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about riding a bus, walking, or driving to school in a safe manner. If they ride a bike, please make sure they wear a helmet and follow traffic laws.

The Arkansas State Police Highway Safety Office has announced that they will be conducting an "Extreme Safety" campaign this week. The campaign encourages motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to practice safe behaviors during the busy back-to-school season when more children are walking and biking.

FRIENDS OF WAPPAPELLO LAKE TO HOST MONTHLY MEETING TONIGHT

The Friends of Wappapello Lake will be hosting their monthly meeting tonight in Wappapello.

The meeting will begin at 6 pm at the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitor Center.

DRILLING TO FORCE CLOSURE OF DUNKLIN COUNTY ROAD THIS WEEK

Route UU in Dunklin County will be closed this week so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform core drilling operations. 

The closure is located between County Roads 711 and 720 near Kennett.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily through Thursday.

TWO PEDESTRIANS STRUCK BY A VEHICLE NEAR FAGUS, ONE PRONOUNCED DEAD

Two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle over the weekend in the Fagus area.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident occurred at around 7:41 pm Saturday on County Road 228, four miles east of Fagus.

The vehicle struck two 62 year old Dexter residents, a man and a woman, on the edge of the roadway.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by Butler County Coroner Jim Akers, while the woman was flown to a Memphis hospital with serious injuries.

HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH WEDNESDAY EVENING

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for all of Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas.

Officials say that heat index values of up to 105 degrees are expected and hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses.

Remember to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air conditioned room and out of the sun if possible, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

DESLOGE TEEN DROWNS WHILE SWIMMING IN ST. FRANCIS RIVER

A Desloge man drowned while swimming over the weekend in Wayne County.

According to authorities, the 19 year old man was swimming in St. Francis River near the Sam A. Baker campground on Saturday when he began to struggle, submerged, and did not resurface.

His body was later recovered and the teen was pronounced dead Saturday evening by Wayne County Coroner Seth Deck.

MANY NORTHEAST ARKANSAS SCHOOLS TO RETURN TO CLASS THIS WEEK

Summer is winding down, which means it’s time for students in Northeast Arkansas to return to class.

Many schools in Northeast Arkansas will be holding their first day of classes this week, including Maynard today and Hoxie tomorrow.

More schools will be opening later this week, including Piggott and Corning on Wednesday.

RECTOR MAN ARRESTED ON RAPE CHARGE

Authorities in Northeast Arkansas have arrested a Rector man on multiple charges, including rape.

According to a warrant affidavit, 36 year old Kyle Neel is facing charges including rape, sexual indecency with a child, and aggravated assault.

Neel is accused of having inappropriate contact with the victim, as well as allegedly choking them to the brink of loss of consciousness.

Neel is being held in the Clay County Detention Center on a 1.5 million dollar bond.

THREE PEOPLE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN SUV CRASH

Authorities responded to the scene of an SUV crash Saturday evening in New Madrid County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a vehicle ran off the side of Highway U in Lilbourn, struck a ditch, and overturned into a house.

Three people were ejected from the vehicle during the crash.

The driver, a 25 year old Portageville man was flown to a Memphis hospital with serious injuries.

Two passengers, a 23 year old Cape Girardeau man and a 17 year old Cairo woman, also received serious injuries and were taken by ambulance to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

MALDEN TO HOST BACK TO SCHOOL BASH THIS EVENING

Parents in Dunklin County can get stocked up for the upcoming school year at an event this evening.

School supplies will be distributed to local students during the Malden Back to School Bash from 5:30 to 7 pm at the Malden Community Center.

There will be free hygiene items, school supplies, haircuts, food, games, and activities at the event.

DATES SET FOR OPEN HOUSES IN THE POPLAR BLUFF R-1 SCHOOL DISTRICT

Parents in Poplar Bluff will have the opportunity to learn more about the schools their children will be attending this fall during a series of open houses scheduled for this month.

Open houses will be held for the Early Childhood Center, the four elementary schools, the Junior High, and the High School on Tuesday, August 18th.

Open houses are scheduled for the Kindergarten Center, Middle School, and Mark Twain school on August 19th. The Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center Open House will host its open house on August 20th.

Officials say that appointments need to be scheduled for the Early Childhood Center and Oak Grove Elementary Open Houses, the rest are drop-in.

The first day of school has been scheduled for Monday, August 24th.

SCHOOL CONSOLIDATION PROPOSAL FAILS IN PEMISCOT COUNTY DESPITE RECEIVING A MAJORITY OF VOTES

Updating a story we brought to you on election night, a school consolidation plan in Pemiscot County has failed, despite receiving a majority of votes on election night.

The proposition would have formed a new district from the Pemiscot County R-3 and Cooter R-4 school districts. When the vote totals came in, it appeared the issue had passed due to receiving 239 yes votes to only 141 no votes.

But Pemiscot County Clerk Pam Treece tells us that the vote total doesn’t tell the whole story.

Treece says that the issue had to be approved by residents in each district, and while Cooter overwhelmingly approved the consolidation 125 to 20, it narrowly failed in the Pemiscot County R-3 district 113 to 122.

MISSOURI SALES TAX HOLIDAY BEGINS TODAY

Missouri’s annual back to school sales tax holiday is underway.

According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, the tax holiday will run from today through Sunday.

During this time, certain back-to-school purchases such as school supplies, computers, clothing and other qualifying items as defined by statute are exempt from all state and local sales tax or use tax taxes.

Eligible items include clothing that does not have a taxable value of more than $100 and personal computers that do not cost more than $1,500, among other items.

POPLAR BLUFF PARKS AND RECREATION TO HOST YOUTH CHEERLEADING THIS FALL

Today is the final day to get your child registered for youth cheerleading in Poplar Bluff.

According to Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation, a youth cheerleading program for 1st through 4th graders will be available this fall. Cheerleaders will learn cheers, chants, simple routines, teamwork, and spirit while supporting the flag football teams during games.

The cost is $20 per child to register and the cheer schedule will mirror the flag football schedule on Saturdays from September 5th through October 10th.

PIGGOTT MAN DIES FROM INJURIES RECEIVED IN A SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH

A Piggott man has died from injuries he received in a single vehicle crash earlier this week.

According to the Arkansas State Police, 27 year old Seth Corcoran, of Piggott, was driving on Highway 62 in Clay County early Sunday morning when the crash occurred.

Officials say that Corcoran’s vehicle ran off the roadway and overturned. No other injuries were reported.

SPECIAL EVENT TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF TO FEATURE ROOFUS THE KANGAROO

A special event will be held today in Poplar Bluff featuring Roofus the Kangaroo.

Roofus went viral last week after being reported missing in Stoddard County. After a multi day kangaroo hunt, Roofus was recovered safely and returned to his owners.

Roofus will be at Barkers Towing and Auto Repair on South Westwood Boulevard this afternoon from 3 to 5 pm. Attendees will be able to get their picture taken with Roofus.

POPLAR BLUFF PARENTS ASKED TO FILL OUT FORM IF THEIR KIDS WILL BE RIDING A SCHOOL BUS THIS YEAR

Poplar Bluff parents are being asked to fill out a form to help the Poplar Bluff school district build and adjust routes for the upcoming school year.

Parents of Poplar Bluff students in grades K through 12, as well as the Early Childhood Center, who will be riding a school bus are asked to complete the form by August 7th.

STUDENTS ARE STARTING TO RETURN TO SCHOOL IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

August is underway and students are starting to return to classes in Northeast Arkansas.

The Paragould School District is one of the first schools to start welcoming back students, with today being the first day of school.

Officials say that starting earlier will allow for some breaks during the year, including a full week off in October and a four-day weekend in February.

Next week will see more school openings in Northeast Arkansas, including Maynard and Hoxie in the early parts of the week.

RUN 4 THE ARTS SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 12TH

A date has been set for the 11th annual Run 4 the Arts hosted by Three Rivers College.

The four-mile run or walk, along with the walk and wag, will be held at 8 am on Saturday, September 12th at the College’s Poplar Bluff Campus. The course will begin and end in front of the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.

Funds from the event will go to benefit Three Rivers fine arts scholarships.

WATER RELATED FATALITIES UP DRAMATICALLY THIS YEAR IN MISSOURI

Water related deaths are up dramatically this year in Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, during the first seven months of the year, the Patrol responded to 27 drownings and 30 total water fatalities. That is an 80 percent increase in state-wide drownings, and more than 36 percent increase in total water fatalities from this time in 2025.

One of the most important things you can do when around water is remembering to wear a life jacket. Officials say that it is common for teens and even adults to overestimate their swimming ability, so even if a person chooses not to wear a life jacket, keeping a life jacket or other adequate flotation within reach is crucial.

Only one of the 30 water fatalities so far this year was confirmed to have been wearing a personal flotation device. The best practice is to always wear a life jacket while on the water.

MOTORISTS ASKED TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR MOWING CREWS

Missouri motorists are asked to be careful when approaching mowing crews along Missouri’s highways.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, major and minor routes will be mowed at least three times throughout the year.

Motorists are asked to be alert for trucks and tractors with lights flashing and moving slowly, around 2 to 5 mph. When you approach one of these vehicles, slow down and focus on the road ahead of you.

Crews may also use a protective "follow" truck to alert motorists they are approaching slow-moving mowers.

Be prepared to stop or drive very slowly behind a "follow" truck, especially approaching a hill or curve on a two-lane road.

LARMIE CHOSEN AS REPUBLICAN NOMINEE FOR BUTLER COUNTY RECORDER OF DEEDS

Voters from every corner of Butler County came out to vote in Tuesday’s Primary election.

In the only competitive County Race, Lisa Larmie defeated Travis Gowen for the Republican Nomination for Butler County Recorder of Deeds. There was no Democratic race for the seat.

Butler County turnout was strong for a primary election, with 6,925 voters participating which was 27.38 percent of the electorate.

During the last midterm primary in 2022, 4,847 ballots were cast in Butler County, which accounted for approximately 20.35 percent of registered voters. Turnout was higher for the Presidential Primary in 2024, where over 6,000 votes were cast, which came out to slightly over 24 percent of registered voters.

SHAWAN WINS NOMINATION FOR MISSOURI HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Jeff Shawan has won the Republican nomination for the Missouri State House of Representatives.

Voters in the 152nd District, which covers part of Butler County, chose Shawan during the Primary election on Tuesday. He will face Correta Bishop this November who ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.

The Missouri state Auditor race was also set for this November as incumbent Republican Scott Fitzpatrick will face Democratic challenger Quentin Wilson.

Jason Smith also easily defeated a primary challenger to represent Southeast Missouri in the United States House of Representatives.

INCOME TAX AND INITIATIVE PETITION CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS REJECTED BY MISSOURI VOTERS

Missouri voters rejected changes to the citizen initiative process as well as the elimination of the state income tax.

Both constitutional amendments 4 and 5 were overwhelmingly defeated during the state Primary election on Tuesday. Amendment 4 would have made it harder for citizen-initiated amendments to win voter approval.

Amendment 5 would have directed the Legislature to phase out the individual income tax and allowed lawmakers to expand the sales tax.

Voters did approve constitutional amendments 1 and 2 which will continue a sales/use tax for soil and water conservation and require all charter counties to hold elections for county assessor.

PRIMARY ELECTION RESULTS FOR CARTER, RIPLEY, AND WAYNE COUNTIES

A school proposition in Carter County drove turnout during the Tuesday primary.

East Carter County R-2 voters narrowly rejected Proposition Keeping Redbirds Strong, which would have increased the district’s operating tax levy.

Carter County Republicans also nominated Debi Reynolds for Clerk of the County Commission and Karen Black for Recorder of Deeds.

In Ripley County, voters approved an incorporation question for the Ripley County Fire Protection District. Christi Kirby won the Republican nomination for Recorder of Deeds. Steve Collins was chosen for the nomination for Doniphan Township Committeeman.

Moving to Wayne County, Jason Street has been nominated by Republicans for Presiding Commissioner and Gracie Alberson won the Republican nomination for County Collector.

PRIMARY ELECTION RESULTS FOR STODDARD, NEW MADRID, AND PEMISCOT COUNTIES

There was only one competitive race in Stoddard County during Tuesday’s Primary election.

Courtney Aslin won the race for the Republican nomination for Stoddard County Clerk.

In Pemiscot County a city sales and use tax was approved in Cooter.

In Wardell, voters approved a sales tax on retail sales of adult use marijuana but rejected a proposition for a mosquito abatement fee.

For New Madrid County, Republican voters chose Brandon Sanchez as the nominee for Associate Circuit Judge and Ryan Riley as the nominee for Presiding Commissioner.

ADDITIONAL SUBJECT CHARGED WITH 2ND DEGREE MURDER IN CONNECTION TO FATAL SHOOTING IN CARUTHERSVILLE

Continuing to follow a story out of the Missouri bootheel, an additional suspect has been taken into custody in connection to a fatal shooting of 33 year old Adrin Hunt over the weekend in Carthursville.

According to the Caruthersville Police Department, officers responded to a location on Ward Avenue following a report of a shooting on Saturday. At the scene, officers found Hunt on the ground suffering from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. He was later pronounced dead. Two other individuals had also been struck by gunfire.

Pemiscot County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Kenneth Ryan Dicus tells KWOC News that 38 year old Domonique Benson and 40 year old Chaddick Benson, both of Caruthersville, are in custody on multiple charges including murder 2nd degree, armed criminal action, and robbery 1st degree.

49 year old Casundra Anderson, of Caruthersville, has been charged with harassment 1st degree. 34 year old D’ariea Carter, of Festus, and 30 year old Edward Shackelford, of Jonesboro, have both been charged with interference with a first responder.

Dicus says that the charges against Anderson, Carter, and Shackelford arise from conduct that allegedly occurred while law enforcement officers were rendering lifesaving aid to the victims and securing the scene for evidence collection.

SUBJECT CHARGED WITH 2ND DEGREE MURDER FOLLOWING FATAL SHOOTING IN CARUTHERSVILLE

Updating a story we have been following for you, a suspect has been taken into custody in connection to a fatal shooting over the weekend in Carthursville.

According to the Caruthersville Police Department, officers responded to a location on Ward Avenue following a report of a shooting on Saturday. At the scene, officers found a man on the ground suffering from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds.

The man, 33 year old Adrin Hunt of Caruthersville, was later pronounced dead.

An investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of Domonique Benson, of Caruthersville, on charges of murder 2nd degree, armed criminal action, robbery 1st degree, and unlawful use of a weapon.

Officials say that the investigation is ongoing.

POPLAR BLUFF HOUSING AUTHORITY TO HOST BLOCK PARTY TONIGHT

The Poplar Bluff Housing Authority will be throwing a block party tonight.

The National Night Out Block Party will be held from 5 to 7 pm at the Housing Authority on North E Street.

The free event will include food, games, a petting zoo, music, family activities, and more.

Officials say that the Block Party is to promote strong police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.

MAN IN CUSTODY IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS ON SEXUAL ASSAULT CHARGE

A Northeast Arkansas man is in custody following allegations of sexual assault.

According to a warrant affidavit, 35 year old Jonathan Hawkins, of Paragould, is accused of inappropriately touching a juvenile victim on multiple occasions.

Hawkins has been booked into the Greene County Justice Center on two counts of felony sexual assault 2nd degree.

His bond was set at $250,000.

MISSOURI STATE HIGHWAY PATROL REQUESTED TO INVESTIGATE AFTER INMATE FOUND DEAD IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has been requested to investigate after an inmate was found dead in Dunklin County.

Dunklin County Sheriff Nick Darter tells KWOC News that an inmate housed at the Dunklin County Justice Center was found unresponsive in a housing unit after an apparent suicide Sunday morning.

The inmate was pronounced dead despite life-saving measures taken by staff.

Darter says that he has asked the Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control to conduct the investigation into the incident.

An autopsy has also been scheduled by the Dunklin County Coroner.

ROAD PROJECT UNDERWAY IN DUNKLIN AND PEMISCOT COUNTIES

Route HH in Dunklin and Pemiscot counties will be reduced this week while Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of Route HH being reduced is located from Route 153 in Dunklin County to Route EE in Pemiscot County.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily through Wednesday.

BUTLER COUNTY VOTERS TO DECIDE BETWEEN LISA LARMIE AND TRAVIS GOWEN FOR RECORDER OF DEEDS NOMINATION

Continuing our Primary election coverage with a look at Butler and Pemiscot Counties.

In Butler County, Republicans will head to the polls to choose who will win the nomination for Recorder of Deeds, Lisa Larmie or Travis Gowen.

In Pemiscot County, there is a question of whether the Pemiscot County R-III School District and the Cooter R-IV School District should form a new district.

Cooter citizens will also be voting on a city sales tax of one percent and a local use tax at the same rate as the local sales tax.

There are two propositions in Wardell, one would impose a three percent sales tax on all retail sales of adult use marijuana. The second proposition would impose a fee of seven dollars per month on every utility customer of the City for mosquito abatement purposes.

MISSOURIANS WILL VOTE ON FOUR CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS TOMORROW

Four amendments to the Missouri Constitution will be on the ballot during the state primary tomorrow.

Constitutional amendment one would continue the one-tenth of one percent sales/use tax that is used for soil and water conservation and for state parks and historic sites.

Constitutional amendment two would require that all charter counties, including Jackson County, elect a county assessor and that such assessors comply with training requirements established by state law.

Constitutional amendment four would require a majority of voters in each congressional district to approve initiative petitions to amend the constitution rather than a simple statewide majority of voters.

Constitutional amendment five would require legislative phase-out and elimination of the individual state income tax based on revenue growth, and authorize the expansion of sales and use taxes; curtail constitutional limits on taxing goods and services; and require local tax rate cuts without reducing school funding if local sales tax revenue increases

BUTLER COUNTY WARNING SIRENS TO BE TESTED TODAY

Don’t be surprised if you hear sirens today in Butler County.

According to the Butler County Emergency Management Agency, the Poplar Bluff and Butler County outdoor warning sirens are scheduled to be tested today at noon.

Officials say that the tests will be conducted every month on the first Monday.

TWO VEHICLE CRASH IN STODDARD COUNTY LEAVES ONE PERSON DEAD, EIGHT OTHERS INJURED

One person is dead and numerous others injured following a two vehicle crash Saturday afternoon in Stoddard County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a vehicle failed to yield to another vehicle at the intersection of Highways Y and N near Bell City.

A passenger in the first vehicle, identified as a 53 year old woman, from Benton, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the first vehicle suffered serious injuries and was flown to a regional hospital.

Two more passengers in the first vehicle, along with five people in the second vehicle, received moderate injuries in the crash and were all transported by ambulance to an area hospital.

HEAD ON COLLISION NEAR DONIPHAN KILLS TWO

Two people have died in connection to a crash Saturday morning in the Doniphan area.

Officials tell KWOC News that one vehicle struck another head-on three miles west of Doniphan on US Highway 160. The crash occurred at around 7:45 am Saturday morning.

The driver of one of the vehicles, identified as a 40 year old Doniphan man, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 50 year old male passenger in the vehicle was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital where he was also pronounced dead.

The driver of the other vehicle was flown to a Memphis hospital with serious injuries.

TWO MEN ARRESTED BY US MARSHALS FUGITIVE TASK FORCE IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Two men were arrested by the US Marshals Fugitive Task force last week in Northeast Arkansas.

According to Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole, task force officers alerted the Sheriff’s Department that they had their fugitive in custody along with another subject. They also advised they had found illegal drugs in their vehicle. 34 year old Tanner Turner, of Poplar Bluff, was arrested on a fugitive warrant out of Butler County.

Officers also arrested 67 year old Jacky White, of Lafe. Both White and Turner are facing new charges of possession of meth or cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

A later search of White’s residence resulted in authorities locating several firearms, a large amount of illegal drugs, and a small meth lab.

FATAL SHOOTING UNDER INVESTIGATION IN CARUTHERSVILLE

The Caruthersville Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Saturday.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting and found a man suffering from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was identified as 33 year old Adrin Hunt of Caruthersville.

Officers immediately began lifesaving efforts, which were continued by emergency medical personnel. Despite those efforts, Hunt was pronounced deceased.

The Caruthersville Police Department is being assisted in the investigation by the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control.

No additional information is being released at this time as the investigation remains active.

POPLAR BLUFF PARKS AND RECREATION TO HOST BACK TO SCHOOL BASH ON SATURDAY

The Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation Department is holding their big end of summer event this weekend.

The 2026 Back to School Bash has been scheduled for 9 am to noon on Saturday at Whiteley Park in Poplar Bluff.

There will be a foam party, yard games, a water slide, and fun for the entire family. Registration is open for local organizations who want to give away school supplies at the event.

PROPOSED RIPLEY COUNTY FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT TO BE VOTED ON DURING PRIMARY ELECTION

Residents in Ripley, Stoddard, and Wayne Counties will head to the polls on Tuesday.

Voters in Ripley County will decide if the County should incorporate a Fire Protection District.

There are also competitive races for the Republican nomination for Recorder of Deeds between Christi Kirby and Donnie Johnson Jr, as well as Doniphan Township Committeeman between Steve Collins and Jerry Lynxwiler.

In Stoddard County, the battle for the Republican nomination for County Clerk will see Courtney Aslin take on Larry Sandage.

Moving to Wayne County. Republicans will decide between Jason Street and Cindy Thompson for the Presiding Commissioner nomination. The race for the nomination for County Collector is between Gracie Alberson and Landon Smith.

STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS POSSIBLE BEGINNING THIS AFTERNOON

Chances of severe weather will return to the region today.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a few strong to severe storms will be possible in Southeast Missouri this afternoon into the evening.

Most of the region is listed as having a slight risk of severe weather today.

GATEWOOD MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN MOTORCYCLE CRASH NEAR DONIPHAN

A Ripley County man was flown to a regional hospital Wednesday night following a motorcycle crash.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 49 year old Gatewood man was driving on Missouri Highway 142 when he swerved to avoid an animal on the roadway and overturned.

The man suffered serious injuries in the crash and was flown to a Memphis hospital for treatment.

GOAT TO BE SHOWN AT MOVIE IN THE PARK TONIGHT

An area at Wappapello Lake will be converted to a movie theater tonight.

Movie in the Park will begin at dusk at the Spillway Recreation Area.

The film Goat will be shown, free of charge, and there will also be hot dogs for sale. Attendees should remember to bring a lawn chair or blanket.

The Spillway Recreation area is located off of Highway T right before the dam.

MENARDS HOSTING FOOD DRIVE TO BENEFIT LOCAL FOOD PANTRIES

A Poplar Bluff area business is accepting food donations to be distributed to the community.

The Poplar Bluff Menards is partnering with area food pantries by serving as a drop off location for donations. Today is the final day to submit donations for the food drive.

Menards also offers a wide variety of non-perishable food items that can be donated immediately in their grocery department, such as boxes of cereal and cans of soup.

Beginning Saturday, the Poplar Bluff Menards will serve as a drop off location for pet supply donations through September 30th.

TWO POPLAR BLUFF TRAP TEAM MEMBERS WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS AT AIM GRAND NATIONAL COMPETITION

Multiple members of the Poplar Bluff trap team participated in the AIM Grand National Youth Trapshooting Championships in Sparta, Illinois, and two of them have returned home champions.

According to the Poplar Bluff Athletic Department, Cooper Hill was the Sub Jr Class B Champion in Singles and High All Around, while Hunter Brown was the Sub Jr Class D Champion in Singles.

Cooper Cunningham was the Junior Class 5th Place in Handicaps.

The entire Poplar Bluff Junior High School squad finished in 3rd place in Sub Junior Class D Squad Singles.

MISSOURI GOVERNOR REQUESTS FEDERAL DISASTER DECLARATION IN RESPONSE TO FLOODING AND SEVERE STORMS

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has requested that President Donald Trump approve a Federal Disaster Declaration in response to the historic flash flooding and severe storms that occurred July 9th through 11th.

According to the governor's office, joint preliminary damage assessments estimated more than $26.5 million in emergency response costs and damage to public infrastructure in nine counties, including Bollinger, Reynolds, Ripley, and Wayne counties

The federal major disaster declaration would make the FEMA Public Assistance program available to local governments and qualifying nonprofits for the repair and rebuilding of damaged roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure as well as reimbursement of emergency response costs and debris removal.

RESIDENTS IN EAST CARTER COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT TO VOTE ON TAX LEVY

There are multiple competitive races that will be decided during the primary election next week in Carter and New Madrid County.

Residents in the East Carter County School District will be voting on an increase to the school’s operating tax levy.

Carter County residents will also be deciding on the Republican nomination for Clerk of the County Commission between Debi Reynolds and Martha Gibbs. There is also a race for the Republican nomination for Recorder of Deeds which sees Madison Greenwall-Ricker taking on Karen Black.

Moving to New Madrid County, there are two competitive races for Republican nominations. Brandon Sanchez and Amy Preyer are both running for the nomination for Associate Circuit Judge.

Republicans will also choose between Ryan Riley, Jon Hunter, and John Riley for the nomination for Presiding Commissioner.

SUBJECT FOUND DEAD IN SCOTT COUNTY IDENTIFIED AS SIKESTON WOMAN

Authorities in Scott County are investigating after a woman was found dead alongside a county road this past weekend.

Shortly before 6:30 am on Saturday, the Scott County Sheriff's Office, along with EMS and fire personnel, responded to County Highway 529 near Sikeston in reference to a subject lying alongside the roadway.

At the scene, emergency personnel determined that the individual was deceased. Scott County Sheriff Derick Wheetley tells KWOC News that the deceased has been identified as 35 year old Kali Hasty, of Sikeston.

Wheetley added that the cause and manner of death are being treated as suspicious and the Major Case Squad has been activated to assist with the investigation.

SEARCH CONTINUES FOR MISSING KANGAROO IN STODDARD COUNTY

The Stoddard County community is coming together to look for a missing kangaroo.

Roofus the Kangaroo went missing in the past week from its home in the Bloomfield area. The owners say that Roofus was last seen at 7 am Wednesday morning at the Nestle mine area on Route AB in the Bloomfield area.

River Radio’s Shuffle 92.9 vehicle will be in the Bloomfield area this morning helping try to find the animal.

FREE STUDENT ATHLETE PHYSICALS SCHEDULED FOR TONIGHT IN POPLAR BLUFF

Poplar Bluff High School and Junior High student athletes can get a free physical tonight at the High School.

Physicals will be conducted beginning at 5:30 pm for athletes in the 7th and 8th grades, beginning at 6:30 pm for 9th and 10th grades, and beginning at 7:30 pm for 11th and 12th grades.

CARDWELL MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN ATV CRASH

One man was injured in an ATV crash Tuesday afternoon near Cardwell.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 78 year old man, from Cardwell, was driving an ATV on the shoulder of US Highway 412 when he turned into the path of another vehicle.

The man suffered serious injuries in the crash and was flown to a Memphis hospital. No injuries were listed for the driver of the second vehicle.

VOTERS TO CHOOSE NOMINEES FOR STATE AND FEDERAL OFFICES DURING MISSOURI PRIMARY NEXT WEEK

Voters will choose nominees for both state and federal offices during next week’s Missouri Primary.

Incumbent Missouri State Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick is running for reelection and facing a primary challenge for the Republican nomination from Gerald Wistrand Jr.. Quentin Wilson and Gregory Upchurch are both running for the Democratic Nomination.

United States Congressman Jason Smith is also running for reelection and will take on Gordon Heslop in the Republican Primary. The Democratic Primary will see Chris Reichard take on Frank Barnitz.

Two Republicans are challenging for the Republican nomination to represent the 152nd district in the Missouri State House of Representatives, Jeff Shawan and Ken Davis.

WAYNE COUNTY MAN SENTENCED FOR THREATENING SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION EMPLOYEES

A Wayne County man was sentenced to over a year in prison for threatening employees of the Social Security Administration.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 57 year old Timothy Stevens, pled guilty in US District Court to two counts of transmitting a threatening communication in interstate commerce.

Stevens made threatening comments to two separate employees of the Social Security Administration in October of last year.

On Tuesday, Stevens was sentenced to a year and a day in prison. After being released from prison he will be on supervised release for two years.

MARSTON MAN FLOWN TO ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH NEAR WAPPAPELLO

A Marston man was badly injured in a single vehicle crash Monday evening.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the 62 year old man was driving on Missouri Highway BB, 10 miles north of Wappapello, when his vehicle ran off the roadway and struck both a sign and a tree.

The driver suffered serious injuries and was flown to a St. Louis hospital for treatment.

ARKANSAS SALES TAX HOLIDAY IS THIS WEEKEND

The Arkansas Sales Tax Holiday will begin this Saturday.

According to the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration, the 2026 Sales Tax Holiday will run from 12:01 am on Saturday through 11:59 pm on Sunday.

The holiday will allow shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain electronic devices, school supplies, school art supplies, school instructional materials, and clothing free of state and local sales or use tax.

Officials say that all retailers are required to participate and may not charge tax on items that are legally tax-exempt during the Sales Tax Holiday.

EVENT HELD TO CELEBRATE 100 MILLIONTH ENGINE PRODUCED AT BRIGGS AND STRATTON PLANT IN POPLAR BLUFF

An event was held Monday to celebrate Briggs & Stratton in Poplar Bluff producing their 100 millionth engine.

Numerous state and local leaders attended the event at the Briggs & Stratton Poplar Bluff Plant, including United States Representative Jason Smith and Poplar Bluff Mayor Robert Smith.

The factory opened its doors in 1989. Brad Massey, Briggs & Stratton Poplar Bluff plant manager, says that the factory mostly produces engines for walk behind mowers.

Officials say that the plant employs over 540 people and has an annual economic output of $89 million dollars.

EXTREME HEAT WARNING CONTINUES IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Dangerously hot conditions are continuing today in Southeast Missouri

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through 7 pm this evening.

Officials say that hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat index values to reach around 115 degrees.

Officials say that heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events. Remember to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room and out of the sun if possible, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Multiple area communities have also opened up cooling centers to help local residents stay out of the heat.

THREE RIVERS ENDOWMENT TRUST ESTABLISHES SCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDENTS PURSUING A DEGREE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

A new scholarship will be available for Three Rivers College students pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Development.

The Three Rivers Endowment Trust has announced that the Ava Grace Memorial Scholarship will be awarded for the first time this fall. The scholarship was funded by the family of Ava Grace Felps, who passed away in 2025 at the age of eight.

“Ava danced through life with a softball in hand, chasing butterflies beneath sunny skies, singing songs from the depths of her joyful heart, and filling every room with laughter and light. Her faith was unwavering, guiding her gentle spirit and teaching her to love without limits,” Ava’s mother Michele Felps said.

“She never met a stranger, only friends she hadn't made yet, and she was always ready to lend a helping hand, offer a kind word, or share one of her beautiful smiles. Though her time on earth was only 8 precious years, the love she gave, the lives she touched, and the light she brought into this world will shine forever. She was a blessing, a gift, and a spark of heaven among us. Loved beyond words, missed beyond measure, and carried in our hearts always.”

The endowed funds will allow for perpetual awards, and the family will continue fundraising efforts to increase the annual awards.

MISSOURI SALES TAX HOLIDAY BEGINS AUGUST 7TH

Missouri’s annual back to school sales tax holiday will begin next month.

According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, the tax holiday will run from Friday, August 7th through Sunday, August 9th.

During this time, certain back-to-school purchases such as school supplies, computers, clothing and other qualifying items as defined by statute are exempt from all state and local sales tax or use tax taxes.

Eligible items include clothing that does not have a taxable value of more than $100 and personal computers that do not cost more than $1,500, among other items.

POPLAR BLUFF HOUSING AUTHORITY TO HOST BLOCK PARTY

The Poplar Bluff Housing Authority will be throwing a block party next week.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Route 80 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction this week so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform bridge maintenance.

The work zone is located from Route V to Outer 55 Road near Matthews.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. both today and tomorrow.

EXTREME HEAT WARNING IN EFFECT THROUGH TUESDAY EVENING

Heat index values could reach well over 100 degrees today and tomorrow in Southeast Missouri. 

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, an Extreme Heat Warning is in effect through Tuesday evening at 7 pm. 

Officials say that hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat index values to reach around 115 degrees. 

If you have to be outside for work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. 

Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

MAN FACING CHARGES INCLUDING KIDNAPPING AND ARMED CRIMINAL ACTION

A Doniphan man is facing multiple charges in connection to an incident early Friday morning. 

According to the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, 32 year old Raymond Nelson was arrested at his residence after a victim reported that he had choked them, put a knife to the back of their neck, and also cut them in the belly. 

Nelson was booked into the Ripley County Jail on charges of kidnapping 1st degree, domestic assault, and armed criminal action.

MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE CHARGES, INCLUDING TRAFFICKING DRUGS, IN POPLAR BLUFF

A man is facing multiple charges, including trafficking drugs, following his arrest in Poplar Bluff over the weekend. 

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, Gregory Leach was taken into custody Saturday in the 2000 Block of North Westwood Boulevard. 

Few details about the arrest have been released, but officials say that Leach is facing charges of assault 3rd, armed criminal action, resisting arrest, trafficking drugs, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful use of a firearm.

POPLAR BLUFF NATIVE KAMERON MISNER TRADED TO PHILADELPHIA

Kameron Misner has been traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. 

According to MLB.com, the Phillies acquired the Poplar Bluff native from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for cash considerations.

He was then optioned to Lehigh Valley in Triple-A.

Misner has hit five home runs and put up a .206 batting average in 97 Major League games over parts of three seasons with the Royals and Tampa Bay Rays.

MAN FOUND DEAD ALONGSIDE COUNTY ROAD NEAR SIKESTON, INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY

Authorities in Scott County are investigating after a subject was found dead alongside a county road. 

Shortly before 6:30 am on Saturday, the Scott County Sheriff's Office, along with EMS and fire personnel, responded to County Highway 529 near Sikeston in reference to a subject lying alongside the roadway.

At the scene, emergency personnel determined that the individual was deceased. The identity of the individual has not been released and the Major Case Squad was activated to assist with the investigation.

OVER TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS WORTH OF STOLEN PROPERTY RECOVERED IN BUTLER COUNTY, TWO PEOPLE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY

Officials in Butler County have arrested two Poplar Bluff residents in connection to a stolen property investigation.

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News that on July 9th, deputies responded to County Road 565 in reference to the theft of multiple items, including a UTV, numerous power tools, and household items.

The investigation led authorities to a residence on Wilson Street in Poplar Bluff, where they located many of the stolen items in the back of a pickup truck that belonged to Kelly Robinson.

Contact was also made with the homeowner, Joshua Stebbins, and a search warrant was obtained which resulted in approximately $2,346 worth of stolen items being recovered.

Both Robinson and Stebbins have been taken into custody and formally charged with felony receiving stolen property.

MULTI-AGENCY RESOURCE CENTER TO BE AVAILABLE TODAY IN REYNOLDS COUNTY

Missouri SEMA’s Emergency Human Services section has coordinated with volunteer and faith-based partners and other state and local agencies to establish a Multi-Agency Resource Center in Reynolds County in order to assist families and individuals in the region who were affected by the flash flooding and severe storms from July 9th to July 11th.

The MARC will be available at the VFW Post 6660 R.C. in Centerville from noon to 6 pm today, and 9 am to 6 pm on Saturday.

A MARC is a central location or “one-stop shop” that brings together recovery resources and support services near the impacted communities and can include cleaning supplies, insurance information, food stamp replacement, emergency financial assistance, legal services, and more.

POPLAR BLUFF PARKS AND RECREATION TO HOST FLAG FOOTBALL AND YOUTH CHEERLEADING THIS FALL

Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation is accepting applications for a flag football camp and league this summer and fall.

According to officials, there will be a flag football camp for kids in 1st through 4th grade from July 27th through the 29th at Poplar Bluff High School.

Camp attendance is not mandatory to participate in the league, which will be from September 5th through October 10th. There will be two divisions, one for 1st and 2nd graders and the other for 3rd and 4th graders.

New this year will be a youth cheerleading program for 1st through 4th graders. Cheerleaders will learn cheers, chants, simple routines, teamwork, and spirit while supporting the flag football teams during games

SIKESTON MAN FLOWN TO ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL FOLLOWING MOTORCYCLE CRASH ON US HIGHWAY 60

A Sikeston man was injured in a motorcycle crash Wednesday evening.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 46 year old man was driving a sportbike on US HIghway 60 when he lost control, began to skid, and was struck by another vehicle.

The man was flown to a St. Louis hospital with serious injuries. No injuries were listed for the driver of the second vehicle.

TODAY IS THE FINAL DAY TO SIGN UP FOR THE BUTLER COUNTY 4-H DAY AT THE LAKE

Time is running out to get your child registered for the upcoming Butler County 4-H Day at the Lake.

BOAT CAPSIZES ON CURRENT RIVER, TWO PEOPLE INJURED

A boat reportedly capsized Tuesday afternoon on Current River.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the incident occurred half a mile upstream from Hickory Landing in Carter County when the boat struck a log, causing it to overturn and eject all four occupants.

Two of the occupants, including a six year old child, suffered minor injuries and were taken to area hospitals by private conveyance.

WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED AFTER BEING EJECTED FROM A MOTORCYCLE IN CLARKTON

A Clarkton woman was seriously injured while riding a motorcycle Tuesday in Dunklin County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the 53 year old woman was riding on a motorcycle on Missouri Highway 162 when she was ejected from the vehicle while it was making a turn.

The woman, who was reportedly not wearing a safety device, was transported to a Memphis hospital with serious injuries.

DONIPHAN MAN ARRESTED ON BURGLARY CHARGE

A Doniphan man has been taken into custody on a burglary charge.

According to the Carter County Sheriff’s Office, Collin Kellerman, of Doniphan, has been charged with 1st degree burglary, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the charges stem from an incident on July 18th where Kellerman allegedly attempted to force his way into a residence while armed with a baseball bat.

Thomas Robbins, of Poplar Bluff, is facing a conspiracy charge in connection to the same incident.

Kellerman’s bond was set at $100,000, cash only, while Robbins bond was set at $50,000, cash or surety.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI OFFICIALS WARNING OF FAKE BILLS IN THE COMMUNITY

Officials in a Southeast Missouri community are warning business leaders and area residents that there have been reports of fake currency in the area.

According to the Caruthersville Police Department, a counterfeit $50 bill was recovered earlier this week.

Possible indicators of a counterfeit bill include missing or faint security features, including the embedded security thread, a washed-out or blurry appearance instead of the sharp, detailed printing found on genuine currency, and missing or poorly defined background printing and fine-line details.

If you receive a bill that you believe may be counterfeit, do not attempt to pass it to someone else, try to note a description of the person who passed the bill and any vehicle information if it is safe to do so, and contact your local law enforcement agency.

ROAD CREWS TO REDUCE ROUTE AA IN NEW MADRID COUNTY TODAY

Route AA in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.

The bridge involved in the project is located from County Road 807 to County Road 544.

POPLAR BLUFF CITY COUNCIL APPROVES EIGHT PERCENT RAISE FOR POPLAR BLUFF POLICE DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEES

The Poplar Bluff City Council has approved a raise for employees of the Poplar Bluff Police Department.

The Council voted 4-3 Monday night to increase salaries at the Police Department by eight percent as a part of a larger budget amendment.

During the meeting, interim Poplar Bluff City Manager Lori Phelps elaborated that the pay increase will cause a reduction in funds to other departments in the city including an over 23 percent cut to the general funds if another funding source is not found.

Councilpersons Robert Smith, Lisa Armes Parson, Barbara Horton, and Shane Cornman voted in favor of the proposal while Councilmen David Boyer, Michael Jones, and Billy DePew voted against.

MISSOURI STATE AUDITOR SAYS LOCAL AMBULANCE DISTRICT IS MAKING PROGRESS IN IMPLEMENTING RECOMMENDATIONS FROM 2024 AUDIT

A 2024 audit revealed that a local ambulance district had nearly a quarter million dollars of its funds misappropriated by a former district director and state officials are saying that work has been made to improve operations.

According to Missouri State Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick, from January 1, 2017, to June 15, 2023, money totaling at least $249,247 was misappropriated from the Naylor-Neelyville Ambulance District by former director Brad Davis.

Davis has now been charged with a class C felony of stealing $25,000 or more and his case is currently awaiting trial.

Fitzpatrick tells KWOC News that new leadership is moving in the right direction as they are taking steps to prevent the district from being taken advantage of again in the future. Fitzpatrick added that there is still more work to be done but he is encouraged by the response the Board of Directors has had to his initial audit report.

TWO FLOWN TO MEMPHIS HOSPITAL AFTER CRASH INVOLVING A MOPED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Two people were flown from the scene of a crash involving a moped Monday night.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 21 year old man, from Campbell, was driving the moped when it turned into the path of another vehicle and was struck on US Highway 62 in New Madrid County.

The driver and a 18 year old passenger on the moped both suffered serious injuries and were flown to a Memphis hospital.

No injuries were listed for the driver of the second vehicle.

POPLAR BLUFF PARKS AND RECREATION TO HOST BACK TO SCHOOL BASH IN AUGUST

The Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation Department has started planning for their end of summer event.

The 2026 Back to School Bash has been scheduled for 9 am to noon on Saturday, August 1st at Whiteley Park in Poplar Bluff.

There will be a foam party, yard games, a water slide, and fun for the entire family. Registration is open for local organizations who want to give away school supplies at the event.

OVER THREE MONTH ROAD PROJECT UNDERWAY ON ROUTE D IN CARTER COUNTY

Route D in Carter County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction for over three months so contractor crews can perform shoulder repairs, drainage work and overlay the roadway.  

The work zone is located from County Road 123 to Business 60 near Van Buren.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Sunday, October 31.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY ON INTERSTATE 55 IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

Southbound Interstate 55 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform bridge maintenance.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from mile marker 65 to mile marker 64.8.

EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING FOR TODAY IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

An excessive heat warning will be in effect today for much of Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, the heat warning will begin today at 11 am, and continue through 7 pm.

Dangerously hot conditions with heat index readings of around 110 degrees are expected, with locally higher readings of up to 116 degrees possible.

Officials say that heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events. Remember to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room and out of the sun if possible, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Multiple area communities have also opened up cooling centers to help local residents stay out of the heat.

NO EXCUSE ABSENTEE VOTING BEGINS FOR UPCOMING PRIMARY ELECTION

Missouri residents can now vote absentee for the upcoming primary election without having a reason to do so.

No excuse absentee voting begins today for the Missouri Primary, which is scheduled for August 4th.

An absentee ballot can be requested from your local election authority. According to the Butler County Clerk’s office, a photo ID will be needed if someone wants to vote absentee.

TWO NEELYVILLE RESIDENTS INJURED IN SUNDAY EVENING CRASH

Emergency crews responded to the scene of a single vehicle crash Sunday evening in Neelyville.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 42 year old Neelyville man was driving on Haynes Street when his vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree.

The man, along with his 15 year old passenger, suffered serious injuries in the crash. They were both transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

WEEKEND CRASH NEAR PIEDMONT INJURES THREE PEOPLE

Three people were injured in a weekend crash near Piedmont.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the crash occurred Saturday afternoon on Highway 34 when one vehicle crossed the center of the road and struck another vehicle head on.

A passenger in the second vehicle, identified as a 35 year old Farmington woman, suffered serious injuries in the crash. The two drivers both suffered moderate injuries. All three were transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

DEXTER MAN TO BE SENTENCED IN OCTOBER FOR TRYING TO ARRANGE HIS WIFE’S MURDER

A Dexter man will be sentenced this fall for trying to arrange the murder of his estranged wife.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 52 year old Matthew Alsup has pled guilty to a murder for hire charge in US District Court.

Alsup admitted to traveling to Mississippi on two occasions in early August of 2025 to try to recruit a former tenant of the RV park that he owned to kill his wife. The FBI learned of the plot, and an undercover police officer met with Alsup on August 14.

Alsup agreed to pay a total of $5,000 for the murder of his wife and “a couple extra grand” to kill his mother-in-law if she was also there.

Alsup is scheduled to be sentenced on October 19. His charge carries a potential penalty of up to 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both.

ADVANCE MAN TO APPEAR IN COURT TODAY ON MULTIPLE CHARGES

An Advance man is scheduled to appear in court today on multiple charges.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Friday night, a Stoddard County deputy responded to a residence in Advance for a harassment complaint. The reporting party said that 40 year old Jeremy Hammontree had pulled into her driveway, laid on his horn, and yelled at the house.

When authorities made contact with Hammontree, he actively resisted, including allegedly pouring a beer on a deputy, kicking the patrol vehicle’s window, and spitting on a deputy.

When he was taken to the jail, Hammontree reportedly continued to be aggressive and made threats to harm a deputy and the deputy’s family.

Hammontree has been charged with felony escape or attempted escape from custody, resisting or interfering with an arrest, and three counts of 1st degree harassment. He is being held on no bond.

ROAD CREWS TO BE WORKING TODAY ON ROUTE 49 IN WAYNE COUNTY

Route 49 in Wayne County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace a culvert under the roadway.

The section of roadway being reduced is located between County Roads 413 and 414 near Williamsville.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH TUESDAY EVENING

Heat index values could reach over 100 degrees today and tomorrow in Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a heat advisory is in effect through Tuesday evening at 7 pm.

Officials say that hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat index values to reach up to 110 degrees on Tuesday.

If you have to be outside for work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.

Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

PRELIMINARY DAMAGE ASSESSMENTS TO BE CONDUCTED IN COUNTIES AFFECTED BY FLOODING AND SEVERE STORMS

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has announced that the state and the Federal Emergency Management Agency will participate in joint preliminary damage assessments for multiple Southeast Missouri counties in response to the flash flooding and severe storms from July 9th to July 11th.

A total of nine counties were a part of the request, including Bollinger, Iron, Madison, Reynolds, Ripley, and Wayne Counties in Southeast Missouri. Joint PDA teams are made up of representatives from FEMA, the State Emergency Management Agency, and local emergency management officials. Beginning Tuesday, six teams will verify documented damage to determine whether FEMA Public Assistance can be requested through FEMA. 

To assist families and individuals in the region who were affected, SEMA’s Emergency Human Services section has coordinated with volunteer and faith-based partners and other state and local agencies to establish a Multi-Agency Resource Center in Reynolds County. The MARC will be available at the VFW Post 6660 R.C. in Centerville from noon to 6 pm on Friday, and 9 am to 6 pm on Saturday. 

A MARC is a central location or “one-stop shop” that brings together recovery resources and support services near the impacted communities and can include cleaning supplies, insurance information, food stamp replacement, emergency financial assistance, legal services, and more.

AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING DUMPED PACKAGES IN RIPLEY COUNTY

Authorities in Ripley County are investigating after multiple packages were found in a wooded area.

According to the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, on July 16th, officials responded to a property on Osprey Lane for several packages that were found dumped in a wooded area.

Most of the packages were never opened, and their shipping labels had also been removed.

Packages bearing customer names were released to the rightful owners. All other packages were returned to FedEx.

Anyone with a missing delivery shipped by FedEx which shows 'delivered' should contact FedEx with their tracking number.

ONE IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO WAYNE COUNTY STABBING

Authorities in Wayne County have made an arrest following a reported stabbing.

Wayne County Sheriff Kyle Shearrer tells KWOC News that a stabbing victim was found at a residence outside of Williamsville on Friday and flown to a regional hospital.

The suspect, identified as Caleb Copes, had fled the scene, but returned shortly after and was taken into custody without incident.

Copes is facing multiple charges, including 1st degree assault and tampering with evidence.

Route WW in Dunklin County will be reduced this afternoon as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway being reduced is located between County Roads 202 and 206.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE SET FOR THIS WEEK ON INTERSTATE 55

Interstate 55 in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction for the early part of this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.

The work zone is located from mile marker 16 to mile marker 18.

INDUCTEES ANNOUNCED FOR 2026 POPLAR BLUFF SPORTS HALL OF FAME CLASS

The inductees have been announced for the Poplar Bluff Sports Hall of Fame class of 2026.

Hall of Fame President Brian Rosener tells KWOC News that Tyler Hillis, Ken Marler, Maurice Moss, Stacey Nolen and Harvey Reynolds will be honored at the 38th Induction Banquet on Thursday, September 17.

Among their many accolades, Hillis won the individual state title in golf as a freshman, Marler led Poplar Bluff’s Senior Legion baseball team to a championship, Moss rewrote the Mules record book in sprinting events, Nolen was the second 1,000-point scorer in Mules basketball history and Reynolds, a state champion bareback rider, won professional rodeos.

They will not be the only ones honored, as the new Sam Giambelluca President Emeritus Award will also be presented to Dan Coffman, Dr. Jerry McLane Family, J.P. McLane, Bill Swafford, and Dr. Austin Tinsley. The new award honors individuals for their contributions to sports in the community.

WAYNE COUNTY JAIL TEMPORARILY SHUT DOWN, INMATES TRANSFERRED TO MADISON COUNTY

A Southeast Missouri community jail is currently closed due to lack of staffing.

Wayne County Sheriff Kyle Shearrer announced this week that on July 8th he made the decision to shut down the Wayne County Jail and transfer inmates to Madison County.

At this time, Madison County is housing 15 of Wayne County’s inmates at $35 a day per inmate.

The sheriff says that the decision came due to a lack of jail staff and that the inmates safety is a priority. He says that the move also helps protect Wayne County, and its citizens, from civil and legal liability.

Shearrer added that he expects this to be a very temporary move that will give him time to hire and train new jailers.

TEEN INJURED IN CRASH NEAR BLOOMFIELD

A teenager was transported to an area hospital Wednesday afternoon after being involved in a crash near Bloomfield.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 17 year old boy, from Oran, was driving on Highway Y in Stoddard County when his vehicle slid into the path of another vehicle and was hit.

The teen suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken by ambulance to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

No injuries were listed for the driver of the second vehicle.

LOW INTEREST FEDERAL DISASTER LOANS STILL AVAILABLE FOR SMALL BUSINESSES IMPACTED BY LAST YEAR’S SPRING STORMS

Area business owners can still apply for low interest loans if they were affected by the late March and early April storms from last year.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, low-interest federal disaster loans are still available to small businesses and private non profit organizations to offset economic losses caused by severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding occurring between March 30 and April 8, 2025.

The disaster declaration covers 41 Missouri counties including Butler, Carter, Dunklin, New Madrid, Pemiscot, Ripley, Stoddard, and Wayne, as well as nine Arkansas counties including Clay, Greene, and Randolph.

The loan amount can be up to $2 million with interest rates as low as 4% for businesses and 3.625% for private nonprofits with terms up to 30 years. Interest does not accrue, and payments are not due until 12 months from the date of the first loan disbursement. The deadline to apply is July 22nd.

Officials in a Southeast Missouri county are warning area residents to be careful about scam phonecalls.

Officials with the Dunklin County Sheriff’s Office say they have received reports of individuals calling residents while falsely claiming to be law enforcement officers.

You are reminded to not send money, purchase gift cards, or provide personal or banking information over the phone.

The Sheriff’s Office will never demand payment or request gift cards to resolve warrants or legal matters.

AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING SUSPECTED LOOTING IN REYNOLDS COUNTY

As Reynolds County continues to recover from the historic flooding it received, authorities are investigating a suspected looting incident.

According to the Reynolds County Sheriff’s Office, authorities are trying to identify the owner of a vehicle that is wanted in connection with a looting incident that occurred Tuesday evening at River’s Edge Campground in Lesterville.

Residents are asked to not approach the vehicle or its occupants.

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE PRESIDENT RELEASES STATEMENT CONCERNING DISCONTINUED RODEO PROGRAM

Three Rivers College President Dr. Wesley Payne has released a statement to KWOC News addressing some of the public's concerns after the announcement that the college is discontinuing its Rodeo program.

In the statement, Dr. Payne says that the decision does not affect the college’s agriculture or forestry programs. Likewise, the College farm in Fairdealing will not be sold.

The existing partnership with Central Methodist University will also continue. Every student who committed to Three Rivers to participate in rodeo has been contacted individually and presented with options that allow them to continue pursuing both their education and collegiate rodeo.

Students who remain at Three Rivers may continue competing as individual participants, and the College will honor the commitments made in their letters of intent, including travel support, entry fees, boarding of stock, and use of the farm facilities.

Students who wish to compete as members of a collegiate team have been offered a place on Central Methodist University’s rodeo team. CMU has also agreed to provide scholarship assistance so that students’ costs remain equivalent to what they would have been at Three Rivers. ESTATE PLANNING COURSE TO BE HELD TODAY AT POPLAR BLUFF LIBRARY

The University of Missouri Extension in Butler County will be conducting an estate planning course today.

Area residents can learn about estate planning from 6 to 8 pm at the main branch of the Poplar Bluff Library.

This course will provide resources, tools, and educational materials to assist with estate, farm, and business succession planning.

Attendees will also gain a better understanding of wills, trusts, and power of attorney access needed to secure assets and manage transitions efficiently.

RIPLEY COUNTY DETENTION CENTER TO PARTICIPATE IN SOCIAL SECURITY PROGRAM

Officials in an area county have announced that they are participating in a federal program with the Social Security Administration.

Ripley County Sheriff Rad Talburt tells KWOC News that the Ripley County Detention Center will participate in the SSA Prisoner Reporting Program.

The program suspends benefits for prisoners while they are in jail and diverts some of the savings to the detention center to help offset the County’s cost of housing the prisoner.

Talburt stressed that benefits for families and dependents are not affected.

Talburt also thanked Congressman Jason Smith for his help getting their participation in the program approved.
