MISSOURIANS URGED TO LEAVE WILDLIFE IN THE WILD

With spring underway many people are heading outside to enjoy the outdoors.

The Missouri Department of Conservation is encouraging anyone experiencing the wilderness to remember to leave wildlife alone. While it may appear young creatures are abandoned, that’s usually not the case.

MDC State Wildlife Veterinarian Sherri Russell says that the parent will usually return. They are normally out searching for food and cannot constantly attend to their offspring.

Russell added that most newborn animals do not survive in captivity.

The care and rehabilitation of wildlife requires special training, facilities, and permits. Without such proper care, wild animals will remain in poor health and could eventually die.

Russell also cautioned that wildlife can become dangerous as they mature, and can also carry parasites, disease, and have the potential to damage property.

MISSOURI MOTORISTS ASKED TO MAKE SAFE DRIVING DECISIONS WHEN NEAR HIGHWAY WORKERS

Missouri motorists are being asked to make safe driving a priority this year during construction season.

This week, the Missouri Department of Transportation is hosting National Work Zone Awareness Week, urging motorists to “Work with Us” by making smart, safe driving choices behind the wheel to protect themselves and those they share the road with, including highway workers.

Missouri will have over 1,000 active work zones during this year’s construction season, so motorists can expect to encounter a significant amount of ongoing maintenance operations during their travels.

In 2025, 24 people were killed in Missouri work zone crashes. Distracted driving contributed to at least 11 of those fatalities as well as more than 400 work zone crashes overall. Distracted driving and driving too fast for the conditions remain the top contributors to work zone crashes.

Officials say that it's not just a courtesy to slow down and move over for these work zones, it's the law. Drivers should be aware of changing traffic conditions, observe warning signs and merge before reaching lane closures.

MDC RECOMMENDS YOU DON’T PLANT INVASIVE CALLERY PEAR TREE

Spring is underway and the Missouri Department of Conservation is cautioning residents to stay away from planting a specific kind of tree.

MDC officials are urging the public to avoid the Callery pear tree.

Also known as the Bradford pear, Cleveland Select, Autumn Blaze, or Aristocrat, the Callery pear tree is a highly invasive tree that multiplies quickly and crowds out Missouri native plants.

Callery pears’ ability to cross-pollinate is why many roadsides, rights-of-way, parks, and other natural areas are filled with white blooms every spring.

Missourians with Callery pear trees on their property have the opportunity to cut down their trees and receive a free, noninvasive tree in return at several “buy-back” events around the state from 3 to 6 pm on April 21st, including in Doniphan and Sikeston.

To qualify, participants must submit a photo of their cut-down Callery pear online. One free native tree will be provided to each registered participant at the selected location.

For more information on the buy-back events and how to register, visit MOInvasives.org.

STATE OFFICIALS SEEKING PUBLIC INPUT ON POTENTIAL CHANGES TO NONRESIDENT DEER HUNTING

Missouri state officials are asking for feedback on potential regulation changes for nonresident deer hunting.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, one regulation change under consideration for the 2026 deer season would reduce the nonresident antlered buck bag limit from two to one. Nonresident landowners would maintain an antlered buck bag limit of two.

A regulation change under consideration for the 2027 deer season includes requiring nonresident deer hunters to purchase a Nonresident Public Land Deer Hunting Permit for $165 to be able to pursue, take, possess, and transport deer on public land in Missouri.

Beyond the 2027 deer season, MDC is considering establishing a draw for nonresidents to be able to hunt deer on public land or on public and private land.

According to officials, nonresident participation in Missouri’s deer season has increased considerably in recent years and some resident hunters have expressed concern about how it is impacting their hunts, particularly on public land.

MDC is accepting public comments on the potential changes through April 20 at mdc.mo.gov.

We are getting to the final part of tax season and Missouri state officials are warning residents to remain vigilant against a surge in tax-related scams designed to steal personal and financial information.

Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway says that tax scams commonly appear in the form of emails, text messages, phone calls, or fake websites posing as legitimate government agencies, tax preparation services, or financial institutions.

These messages may claim that a taxpayer is owed a refund, has an urgent problem with their return, or must verify information immediately to avoid penalties.

Consumers are encouraged to protect themselves by never clicking on suspicious links or downloading unexpected attachments, verifying communications directly through official websites or phone numbers, using trusted, reputable tax preparation services, and filing as quickly as possible.

If you encounter a suspected scam, report it immediately to the IRS and the Federal Trade Commission. Hanaway says that taxpayers who believe they may have been targeted or victimized should act quickly by reporting the incident and monitoring their financial accounts and credit reports.

The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold the public hearing from 4 to 6 p.m. at the gym of Senath-Hornersville High School in Senath.

The environmental study examined options for increasing capacity, as well as the impact of those options, for the 20-mile section of U.S. 412 extending from Route AC near the Arkansas border to just east of Route Y near Kennett.

Two alternatives for increasing capacity were identified. During the public hearing, the preferred alternative of a four-lane undivided highway with a flush median will be shared. The preferred alternative includes an additional lane for turning traffic at intersections.

The public hearing will be open house style, and visitors can stop by anytime between 4 and 6 p.m. to discuss the details of the project with the project team.
