PBHS JUNIOR EARNS TRIP TO WASHINGTON D.C. AFTER WINNING ESSAY CONTEST

An area student will get to experience our nation’s capital after she won an essay contest.

According to school officials, Poplar Bluff High School junior Addison Hutson will join more than 100 high schoolers from across the state for the 63rd annual Missouri Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. in June.

Hutson was awarded the all-expense paid week-long trip as the result of winning an essay contest through Ozark Border Electric Cooperative earlier this month.

The winning essay details Hutson’s journey of working to regain her love for soccer after experiencing a significant loss.

The Missouri contingent will join over 1,800 students from across the country to meet with their respective legislators in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate.

MOTORCYCLE CRASH KILLS ONE IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

One man is dead following a motorcycle crash Tuesday evening in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Arkansas State Police, 51 year old Cecil Meridith, of Jonesboro, was riding the motorcycle on State Highway 304 in rural Greene County, when the vehicle ran off the roadway in a curve and overturned into a ditch.

Officials say that Meridith was ejected during the crash and later pronounced dead.

AREA POLICE CELEBRATE NATIONAL PUBLIC SAFETY TELECOMMUNICATORS WEEK

This week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators week and multiple area police departments are celebrating their communications departments.

The event honors telecommunications personnel in the public safety community.

TESTING FINDS AVIAN FLU CASE IN CLAY COUNTY

Officials say that a case of Avian Flu has been confirmed in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Arkansas Department of Agriculture, testing has confirmed a case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in a commercial poultry flock in Clay County.

Officials say that the farm is under quarantine, and response and containment measures are underway.

Avian Flu is a severe, highly contagious disease caused by influenza type A viruses. It affects domestic poultry and wild birds, often causing sudden illness or death, devastating poultry populations and causing serious economic losses.

Poultry growers in the region are urged to stay alert for signs of HPAI and continue following strict biosecurity practices to protect their flocks.

FEED AND SEED EVENT SCHEDULED FOR TODAY

New Day Ministry in Poplar Bluff will be hosting a feed and seed event today.

The event is from 3 to 5 pm and is first come, first serve, with packs limited to one per household.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY IN DEXTER

Business Route 60 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane beginning today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway impacted by the project is located from One Mile Road to Specialty Drive in Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through Monday.
