HEAVY WINDS CAUSE DAMAGE AND POWER OUTAGES ACROSS SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 

Heavy winds both Friday and Sunday caused damage and power outages in Southeast Missouri.  

According to the National Weather Service, in Butler County there were multiple reports of trees being snapped by wind on Friday. A tree fell and blocked Highway T for a period of time and there were reports of a tree falling on a house on Truman Street in Poplar Bluff. Wind gusts were measured at 59 miles per hour in Butler County.  

On Sunday, trees reportedly fell on a house and cars on Butler County Road 461. On County Road 470, a house sustained roof damage in addition to multiple trees being down in the area. In Carter County, a tree came down and blocked Highway B shortly before 2 pm. 

There were also numerous reports of people losing power during Sunday’s storms.

NEELYVILLE MAN ARRESTED FOR HEROIN IN RIPLEY COUNTY 

A Neelyville man is facing a felony drug charge following his arrest over the weekend in Ripley County.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 22 year old Dakota Miller was taken into custody Saturday night on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance for heroin.  

Following the arrest, Miller was transported to the Butler County Jail.

TWO CHILDREN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN RIPLEY COUNTY WRECK 

Two young children were seriously injured in a wreck Friday night.  

According to the Ripley County Sheriff’s Department, the wreck occurred at around 6 pm when a vehicle crossed the center line of US Highway 160 in Ripley County and struck another vehicle.  

Two passengers in the first vehicle, both under the age of 10, suffered serious injuries and were transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.  

Both drivers received moderate injuries, while a passenger in the second vehicle suffered minor injuries. They were also taken to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

TREE FALLS ON BOAT IN VAN BUREN, KILLING ONE AND INJURING TWO OTHERS 

A Van Buren man has died after a boating accident involving a tree in Carter County.  

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 22 year old Levi Mayberry was piloting a boat Friday afternoon on Current River when a tree fell and struck the boat.  

Mayberry was killed in the wreck, while two passengers suffered moderate injuries. The passengers were transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

MAN FACING MULTIPLE CHARGES FOLLOWING ARREST IN BUTLER COUNTY 

An area man is facing multiple drug related charges following his arrest on Saturday.  

According to authorities, 32 year old Louis Grider, of Poplar Bluff, was arrested Saturday afternoon on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.  

Grider was also arrested on a misdemeanor charge of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.  

Following the arrest, he was held at the Butler County Jail.

DEXTER MAN ARRESTED ON MOLESTATION WARRANT 

Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested an area man on a molestation warrant.  

Officials with the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that 55 year old Jerry Pierce, of Dexter, was recently taken into custody on a warrant for 1st degree child molestation.  

Pierce’s bond was set at $12,500, cash only.

HEPATITIS A IMMUNIZATION CLINIC SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF 

The Butler County Health Department has scheduled a Hepatitis A immunization clinic for today.  

The clinic will be from 8 am to 4 pm at the Health Department.  

Officials say anyone who is around someone who uses drugs or who uses drugs themselves should get vaccinated.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING WRECK IN KENNETT 

A Tennessee man has died following a single vehicle wreck in Dunklin County.  

According to authorities, a vehicle ran off of the South Bypass in the Kennett area Thursday morning and overturned multiple times.  

72 year old Richard Marotti, of Dyersburg, Tennessee, was killed in the wreck.  

Another person in the vehicle was injured and flown to a Memphis hospital.

THEFT INVESTIGATION LEADS TO DRUG BUST IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 

A theft investigation led to a drug bust earlier this week in Southeast Missouri.  

Officials with the Malden Police Department tell KWOC News that members of the MPD, Dunklin County Sheriff’s Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Southeast Missouri Drug Task Force, and New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit, served a search warrant at a residence in Malden on Wednesday as part of an ongoing theft investigation.  

During the search, undisclosed amounts of methamphetamine and marijuana were recovered from the residence, along with stolen property. 

On Thursday, Dunklin County Prosecuting Attorney Nicholas Jain filed formal charges and a warrant for the arrest of Anthony Viar, of Malden, on the charges of felony manufacture of a controlled substance - methamphetamine; delivery of a controlled substance -methamphetamine; delivery of a controlled substance two counts –marijuana, and receiving stolen property.  

Viar’s bond was set at $40,000 cash, and he has been transported to the Dunklin County Jail.

ROAD CLOSED FOR BRIDGE IMPROVEMENTS 

Route P in New Madrid County is being reduced with an 11-foot width restriction into next month so contractor crews can perform bridge improvements. 

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the bridge involved is located over Interstate 55 at exit 52. 

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 am to 8 pm daily through Saturday, July 13th.

TREE FALLS ON MOVING VEHICLE, INJURING TWO PEOPLE 

Two people were injured by a tree Thursday morning in Butler County.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a vehicle was traveling on Third Street in Fisk at around 10:30 am when the vehicle was struck by a falling tree.  

The driver of the vehicle and a passenger both suffered minor injuries and were transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN ARRESTED IN STODDARD COUNTY ON DRUG CHARGES 

Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested a Poplar Bluff woman on multiple drug related charges.  

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 36 year old Nicole Schrum was taken into custody Thursday morning on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.  

Schrum is also facing charges of possession of marijuana, speeding, and failure to drive in the right lane.  

Following the arrest, she was held in the Stoddard County Jail.

DATE SET FOR 11TH ANNUAL MULE SKINNER GOLF TOURNAMENT 

The date has been set for the 11th Annual Mule Skinner Golf Tournament.  

The 4 person scramble tournament will be held on Friday, August 2nd at the Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff. Organizers say the entry fee is $500 per team, which includes a cart and lunch. Hole sponsorships are also available for $100 per hole.  

All proceeds will go to benefit Poplar Bluff Mules athletics programs.

HEAVY WINDS CAUSE DAMAGE IN THE POPLAR BLUFF AREA 

Severe Thunderstorms crossed our listening area on Wednesday bringing hail and heavy winds.  

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, Supercells developed over southeast Missouri and produced damaging winds approaching 70 mph in Poplar Bluff along with large hail up to at least ping pong ball size near Scott City. 

A plane was damaged after getting blown over at the Poplar Bluff Municipal Airport and a large fireworks tent also appeared to be blown over in Poplar Bluff.  

In Butler County, several telephone poles, power lines, and tree limbs were also knocked down.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN SENTENCED TO OVER 10 YEARS IN PRISON ON CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGE 

A Southeast Missouri man is facing over 10 years in prison for possessing child pornography.  

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 48 year old Joel Williams, of Bertrand, pled guilty last March to one count of possessing child pornography.  

Last August, law enforcement officials discovered Williams was using a social-networking website to obtain images and videos consisting of child pornography. 

He was sentenced Wednesday to serve 12 years in federal prison. 

After serving his sentence, Williams will be placed on supervised release for the rest of his life. He was already required to register as a sex offender because of a prior conviction for second-degree statutory sodomy.

TWO SERIOUSLY INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK IN CARTER COUNTY 

Two men were injured Wednesday afternoon in a single vehicle wreck in Carter County.  

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the wreck occurred on Eastbound US Highway 60 near Freemont when a freightliner tractor ran off the side of the road and overturned.  

The driver and a passenger were both seriously injured in the wreck. They were each transported to a West Plains hospital.

NAYLOR MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON MULTIPLE WEAPON AND DRUG CHARGES 

Authorities in Ripley County have arrested an area man on multiple felony charges.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 54 year old Carter Day, of Naylor, was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon on felony charges of unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine, and driving while revoked.  

Day is also facing charges of possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.  

Following the arrest, Day was held at the Ripley County Jail.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FACING MULTIPLE DRUG RELATED CHARGES 

A Poplar Bluff man was taken into custody last night on multiple drug related charges.  

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 41 year old Jeremy Rankin was arrested shortly before 8 pm on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance for methamphetamine, oxycodone, and alprazolam.  

Rankin is also facing charges of driving while intoxicated - drugs and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.  

He was held in the Butler County Jail following the arrest.

MAN FLOWN TO AREA HOSPITAL FOLLOWING WRECK IN NEW MADRID COUNTY 

A Texas man was flown to an area hospital Wednesday after being involved in a single vehicle wreck in New Madrid County.  

According to authorities, the 20 year old male was driving a vehicle on Interstate 55 when he ran off the side of the roadway, struck a ditch, and overturned.  

The driver suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital. A passenger in the vehicle received minor injuries.

MAINTENANCE SCHEDULED TO BEGIN THIS WEEK ON ROAD NEAR VAN BUREN 

Maintenance will cause the temporary closure of a road in the Van Buren area.  

According to Ozark National Scenic Riverways, the Tram Road south of Van Buren, also known as NPS Road 123, will be temporarily closed to thru traffic while the road undergoes maintenance beginning this week.   

Officials say the temporary closure is expected to last approximately two weeks, and will be conducted on weekdays from 7 am to 5 pm.  

The maintenance will include trimming trees and brushing the road edges. Heavy equipment will also be used to repair the unpaved road surface, which has become uneven and littered with potholes following the flood of 2017.

SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE WITH STORM SYSTEM HITTING THE AREA TODAY 

Weather officials are saying that the potential exists today for severe weather in Southeast Missouri.  

According to a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by the National Weather Service, thunderstorms are likely today into tonight, possibly in a couple of rounds.  

Severe thunderstorms are also possible this afternoon and evening with potential severe storm hazards possibly including damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes.  

Locally heavy rain will also lead to the potential for localized flash flooding, especially in areas that receive repeat storm activity.

FIRE HYDRANT REPAIRS COULD CAUSE WATER DISRUPTIONS TODAY IN DONIPHAN 

Some residents in Doniphan could be seeing water issues today.  

According to the Doniphan Police Department, the Department of Utilities is planning to service some of the city’s fire hydrants beginning at 8 am.  

Residents west of Maple Street and south of Highway Street may experience lower than normal water pressure and some addresses within the zone may be without pressure until repairs are completed.  

The repairs are expected to be completed before noon unless unforeseen circumstances arise. 

All customers that are affected with a water outage will be under a precautionary boil water notice until further notice.

POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS COMPLETE COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS 

Some area students have been hard at work this summer completing various community service projects.

According to the Poplar Bluff Middle School Facebook Page, Junior Beta Summer School class has made 11 baby blankets for the PBRMC nursery.  

The class has also used supplies collected during the school year to make each classroom at the Middle School an Emergency Bucket as well as picked up trash at Bacon Park.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER FOOT PURSUIT IN PORTAGEVILLE 

Authorities in Portageville arrested a man Tuesday following a short pursuit.  

According to the Portageville Police Department, officers were in the process of conducting a traffic stop on a vehicle for defective equipment when a passenger fled from the vehicle on foot. 

After a brief foot pursuit, the passenger, identified as Vendarius Brown, was taken into custody without incident. 

Officials say that Brown had a felony no bond warrant along with other felony warrants through New Madrid County.

ONE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WRECK NEAR HARVIELL 

A Doniphan woman was injured Tuesday morning in a wreck in Butler County.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred when a vehicle failed to yield to another vehicle on Route C near Harviell shortly after 7 am. 

The driver of the second vehicle suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to a Poplar Bluff hospital. 

NORTHEAST ARKANSAS COUNTY AWARDED $15,000 GRANT 

A Northeast Arkansas county has been awarded over $10,000 in grant money.  

According to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, the Greene County Court Security and Emergency Preparedness Committee has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the Arkansas Administrative Office of the Courts. 

Two first aid kits and two basic lifesaving kits will be stationed at key locations throughout the courthouse along with the purchase of two automated external defibrillators.  

The grant was also used for updating camera equipment and other materials that provide support to the court security office.

MALDEN MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGES 

A Malden man is facing child pornography charges following his arrest last week.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, on June 13th, investigators executed a search warrant at the residence of 52 year old Earl Tibbs. During the search, investigators seized child pornography and computer equipment.  

The Dunklin County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has formally charged Tibbs with one count of promoting child pornography and four counts of possession of child pornography.  

He was transported to the Dunklin County Jail and his bond was set at $25,000.

ROAD PROJECT TO FORCE TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF STODDARD COUNTY ROAD 

Route CC in Stoddard County will be closed for almost a month so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform pavement repairs.  

The section of Route CC to be closed is located from Route 114 to Route HH. 

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday, July 11th, from 7 am to 5 pm daily.

POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL ONE OF EIGHT CHOSEN FOR STATE HONOR 

A Poplar Bluff school has been recognized for a state honor.  

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education have announced that Oak Grove Elementary is one of eight across the state to be honored as a Gold Star School.  

The program recognizes schools that perform at high academic levels or that perform at high levels while serving a significant proportion of disadvantaged students. 

Oak Grove has also been nominated for national Blue Ribbon recognition. Blue Ribbon Schools will be announced this fall by the U.S. Department of Education.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO METHAMPHETAMINE CHARGES 

A Caruthersville man is facing up to 40 years in prison on methamphetamine charges.  

Officials with the United States Attorney’s Office tell KWOC News that 31 year old Jake McCall has pled guilty to one count of distributing more than fifty grams of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine and a separate count of possession of more than fifty grams of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine with intent to distribute. 

Officials say that McCall admitted to distributing over 55 grams of methamphetamine to an undercover police officer last October. McCall also admitted that officers had attempted to stop him in November, after he had agreed to distribute 19 ounces of methamphetamine to an informant.  

His sentencing is scheduled for September 16th, where he faces five to 40 years imprisonment and a fine of $5,000,000.

BUTLER COUNTY RETIRED TEACHERS AND SCHOOL PERSONNEL TO CELEBRATE 50TH ANNIVERSARY 

An area group will be celebrating their 50th anniversary with a reception this week.  

The 50th Anniversary Reception for Butler County Retired Teachers and School Personnel has been scheduled for 10 am to noon on Wednesday at the Missouri Room next to the Mules Café.  

The group president says that the event will be an informal occasion with time for attendees to visit with retired colleagues.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE FELONY DRUG CHARGES

Authorities in Butler County have arrested an area man on multiple felony charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 34 year old Joseph Johnson, of Poplar Bluff, was taken into custody early Sunday morning on felony charges of unlawful use of a weapon as well as possession of a controlled substance for heroin, methamphetamine, Xanax, and Hydrocodone.

Johnson is also facing charges of possession of marijuana – less than 35 grams and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, Johnson was held at the Butler County Jail.

ILLINOIS WOMAN DROWNS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

An Illinois woman died Friday while floating in Southeast Missouri.

According to authorities, 48 year old Sherrie Baker, of Granite City, Illinois was floating on a tube in Jack’s Fork River near Eminence when she struck a sunken stump and was swept underwater.

Baker was pronounced dead Friday afternoon by Shannon County Deputy Coroner Hunter Warren.

ARREST MADE IN CONNECTION TO THE DEATH OF A FORMER NORTHEAST ARKANSAS LAWMAKER

Authorities have announced that an arrest has been made in the homicide investigation of a former lawmaker from Northeast Arkansas.

Officials with the Arkansas State Police tell KWOC News that Special Agents of the ASP Criminal Investigation Division and Deputies of the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department have arrested 48 year old Rebecca Lynn O’Donnell, of Pocahontas, in connection with the homicide of former Arkansas State Senator Linda Collins-Smith and criminal charges are pending.

Officials say that the investigation is at a critical juncture and no further information will be released until authorities are confident it will not comprise the integrity of the criminal case.

SIX INJURED IN FOUR VEHICLE PILE UP NEAR POPLAR BLUFF

A four vehicle wreck Friday evening in Butler County resulted in multiple injuries.

According to authorities, the wreck occurred at around 7:30 pm on Missouri Highway 53, five miles south of Poplar Bluff.

Three vehicles were slowing when one was hit from behind initiating the wreck.

One person sustained moderate injuries, while five received minor injuries during the incident. All six people who were injured were transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN MOTORCYCLE WRECK

An area man was injured in a motorcycle wreck over the weekend.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 54 year old Bobby Cooley, of Hayti, was riding a motorcycle on US 60, near Dudley, when he lost control and the vehicle overturned.

Officials say the wreck occurred at around 1:10 pm Saturday afternoon.

Cooley suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was taken by ambulance to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

BRAIN FITNESS CLASS BEGINNING THIS WEEK IN BUTLER COUNTY

The University of Missouri Extension in Butler County is offering a Boost Your Brain and Memory: Brain Fitness Class beginning this week.

The class will be held on Tuesdays for four weeks at the Extension Center on Lindsay Avenue in Poplar Bluff. The registration fee is $35.

The class will help participants implement new habits to maintain cognitive health while also practicing new skills for better memory performance.

BROSELEY TEENAGER ARRESTED ON FELONY DRUG CHARGE IN BUTLER COUNTY             

 Authorities in Butler County have arrested an area teenager on a drug related felony charge.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 18 year old Dillon Smith, of Broseley, was taken into custody on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and felony resisting arrest.  

Officials say that Smith is also facing a charge of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.  

Following the arrest, he was taken to the Butler County Justice Center.

BUTLER COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT TO HOST 70TH ANNIVERSARY SUMMER BASH 

The Butler County Health Department will be celebrating their 70th anniversary later this month with a huge event.  

The Health Department’s 70th Anniversary Summer Bash has been scheduled for 9 am to noon on Friday, June 28th at 1619 North Main Street in Poplar Bluff.  

There will be activities for all ages such as the Poplar Bluff Fire Department smoke house, as well as Poplar Bluff Animal Control showcasing animals that are available for adoption.

POPLAR BLUFF MIDDLE SCHOOL ASKING FOR PARENTS TO FILL OUT SURVEY 

School officials in Poplar Bluff want feedback from parents.  

The Poplar Bluff Middle School has issued a survey to gauge the needs and desires of families in the district.  

Parents are being asked to fill out the survey with your student and if you have more than one student attending the Poplar Bluff Middle School, you’re asked to fill it out multiple times.

HEP A CLINIC SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 24TH 

According to the Butler County Health Department, there have been two recent laboratory confirmed cases of Hepatitis A in Butler County.  

Due to this, the Health Department has scheduled a Hepatitis A immunization clinic for later this month at the Health Department. 

The clinic will be held on Monday, June 24th from 8 am to 4 pm.  

Officials say anyone who is around someone who uses drugs or uses drugs themselves should get vaccinated.

DATES SET FOR 27TH ANNUAL CHILDREN’S THEATER DRAMA CAMP 

The dates have been set for the 27th Annual Children’s Theater Drama Camp at Three Rivers College.  

The camp for students entering 2nd to 8th grade will be held from July 8th to July 12th at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center on the Three Rivers College Poplar Bluff campus. 

The camp will cover theater essentials including acting, theater technology, improvisation, costume and prop building, monologues, script writing, stage makeup, and more. The students will then show off what they have learned at a performance at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center at 11 am on July 12th.  

Registration forms are available at the Tinnin Center office and the deadline to register is July 18th.  

The cost of the drama camp is $75, which includes a T-shirt, scripts, notebook, daily snack and drink. The entry form can be found online at trcc.edu/dramacamp. The deadline to register is June 21st.

REGISTRATION IS OPEN FOR THREE RIVERS ENDOWMENT TRUST GOLF TOURNAMENT 

The 7th annual Three Rivers Endowment Trust Golf Tournament has been scheduled for today, at the Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff. 

The four-person scramble tournament will begin with check in and lunch at noon, followed by a shotgun start at 1 pm. There will also be a reception beginning at 5:30 pm that is open to the public. 

According to officials, all proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Three Rivers Annual Fund, which funds special projects and helps make a difference in the lives of TRC students.

AREA MAN KILLED IN CARTER COUNTY ATV WRECK 

One person has died following an ATV wreck in Carter County.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, an ATV, driven by 64 year old Michael Morgan, of Kennett, ran off the roadway and overturned on Deer Run, 2 miles west of Van Buren.  

Morgan was pronounced dead at the scene by Carter County Coroner Eric McSpadden.

GIDEON MAN FACING METH AND PARAPHERNALIA CHARGES FOLLOWING ARREST 

A Gideon man is facing a felony drug charge following his arrest Tuesday evening.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 20 year old Bradley Wallace was taken into custody at around 9:30 pm in Pemiscot County on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.  

Officials say that Wallace is also facing a charge of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.  

Following the arrest, he was held at the Pemiscot County Jail.

STODDARD COUNTY ROAD CLOSED FOR BRIDGE REPLACEMENT 

Route DD in Stoddard County has been closed so contractor crews can replace a bridge.   

MoDOT officials tell KWOC News that the bridge is located over Spring Creek between County Road 593 and County Road 372 near Vanduser. 

The bridge is scheduled to re-open on Friday, September 6th.

AUTHORITIES IN CARTER COUNTY ARREST TWO ON MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES 

Authorities in Carter County have arrested two women on multiple felony charges.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 38 year old Mindy Everett, of Ellsinore, and 53 year old Deborah Davis, of Van Buren, were both taken into custody Tuesday night on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance for methamphetamine, felony unlawful use of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana 10 grams or less.  

Following the arrest, both Everett and Davis were taken at the Carter County Jail.

MOTORISTS ASKED TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR PEDESTRIANS 

Motorists in Missouri are being reminded to stay on the lookout for pedestrians.  

The Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety is holding a campaign this week focusing on pedestrian safety. 

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, in 2018 preliminary data showed that, 97 pedestrians were killed in Missouri and 250 were seriously injured. The top pedestrian contributing factors involved were alcohol or drug impairment and distraction or inattention. 

MoDOT Highway Safety and Traffic Engineer Nicole Hood says that all drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are encouraged to make safe choices so everyone, no matter the mode of transportation, makes it to their destination safely.

JOSH BURSON MEMORAL GOLF TOURNAMENT SET FOR NEXT WEEKEND 

The 10th Annual Josh Burson Memorial Golf Tournament is set for June 22nd at the Ozark Ridge Golf Course in Poplar Bluff.  

The 4 man scramble tournament costs $75 per person to enter and will be followed by a dinner catered by Tasteful Creations beginning at 6 pm at Holiday Inn. The dinner will also have an auction and raffles.  

All proceeds will go to the Josh Burson Memorial Scholarship Fund.

CULVERT PIPE REPLACEMENT TO CAUSE CLOSURE OF RIPLEY COUNTY ROAD 

Route E in Ripley County will be closed today so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can replace a culvert pipe under the roadway.  

The work zone will be located 3 miles south of the Route 142 Junction. 

Work is schedule to take place today, weather permitting, from 8 am to 3 pm.

BURGLARY LEADS TO A POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN’S ARREST 

A Poplar Bluff woman was taken into custody following a burglary report.  

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News, on Monday evening, deputies received a report of a burglary at a residence on County Road 560. Multiple items were taken including a television and a laptop. 

An investigation into the burglary led deputies to search a vehicle at a location on County Road 560. Inside the vehicle deputies found multiple electronic devices that were taken during the burglary.  

Deputies also found several other items that had been reported stolen from other victims.  

52 year old Kimberly McFall, of Poplar Bluff was arrested on charges of burglary 2nd degree, possession of burglary tools, and trespassing 1st degree.  

McFall is currently being lodged in the Butler County Justice Center.

NEELYVILLE MAN FACING METH AND PARAPHERNALIA CHARGES FOLLOWING ARREST 

A Neelyville man is facing a felony drug charge following his arrest Tuesday morning.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 69 year old Johnny Evans was taken into custody at around 8:30 am yesterday in Butler County on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.  

Officials say that Evans is also facing a charge of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.  

Following the arrest, he was held at the Butler County Justice Center.

ROAD OVERLAY PROJECT TO CAUSE DELAYS IN RIPLEY COUNTY 

Route B in Ripley County will be reduced with an 11 foot width restriction through the end of this month as contractor crews overlay the roadway. 

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of roadway to be reduced is located from Route 160 to Route 142. 

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 am to 5 pm daily through Friday, June 28th.

AREA MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING SHORT PURSUIT IN POPLAR BLUFF 

Authorities in Poplar Bluff say a man has been taken into custody on multiple charges following a short pursuit.  

Lieutenant Josh Stewart with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that 43 year old Eddie Hart Jr. of Poplar Bluff, was arrested Tuesday afternoon, at the intersection of Emma Street and Eva Street, after he crashed his motorcycle while fleeing from officers.  

Stewart says Hart was arrested for resisting arrest by fleeing, multiple outstanding warrants, and numerous traffic violations.

BUTLER COUNTY AUTHORITIES ARREST AREA MAN ON MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES 

Authorities in Butler County have arrested an area man on multiple felony charges.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 29 year old Wil Hillis, of Poplar Bluff, was taken into custody Monday afternoon on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.  

Hillis is also facing charges of failure to display valid license plates and no insurance.

5K RUN SCHEDULED FOR JULY TO BENEFIT DEXTER THREE RIVERS COLLEGE STUDENTS 

A 5K run has been scheduled for early July to benefit Three Rivers College students in Dexter.  

The college is holding the Dash and Splash 5K Run and Walk on July 12 at East Park in Dexter to support the Student Success Fund.  

Registration will begin at 5 pm and the race will start at 6 pm. 

The registration fee is $20 through June 19th, and participants can choose the 5K Run/Walk, the 1-mile walk, or show support as a “virtual runner.” Beginning June 20, the fee increases to $25 Registration forms can be found at trcc.edu/development/events.

PURSUIT LEADS TO ARREST IN BUTLER COUNTY 

A Poplar Bluff man has been taken into custody following a pursuit over the weekend in Butler County.  

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News that on Friday, officers responded to a domestic disturbance call on County Road 302. 

When officers arrived, a vehicle fleeing the scene attempted to strike an officer with the vehicle. After a short pursuit, the driver of the vehicle intentionally collided into a large fence at a residence on Jerry Lane, which disabled the vehicle.  

Officers subsequently apprehended and arrested 39 year old Bryan Peck, of Poplar Bluff, for assault 2nd degree on a law enforcement officer, unlawful use of a weapon, resisting arrest, and various traffic charges.  

As of this morning, Peck remains in the Butler County Justice Center on a $250,000 cash only bond.

NAYLOR MAN FACING METHAMPHETAMINE CHARGE FOLLOWING ARREST IN BUTLER COUNTY 

A Naylor man was taken into custody Monday afternoon in Butler County on a felony drug charge.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 61 year old Carl Moore was arrested at around 4:30 Monday on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.  

Following the arrest, Moore was held at the Butler County Jail.

DONIPHAN POLICE DEPARTMENT TO HOST FISHING CLINIC 

A date has been set for a fishing clinic that will be hosted by area police.  

According to a post on their Facebook page, the Doniphan Police Department will be holding their annual fishing clinic on June 12th.

FISK MAN FACING METHAMPHETAMINE CHARGE FOLLOWING ARREST IN STODDARD COUNTY 

A Fisk man was taken into custody Sunday afternoon in Stoddard County on a felony drug charge.  

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 40 year old Christopher O’Neal was arrested at around 1:15 Sunday on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.  

Following the arrest, O’Neal was held at the Stoddard County Jail.

ALMOST TWO MONTH LONG ROAD PROJECT UNDERWAY IN NEW MADRID COUNTY 

Route 61 in New Madrid County is being reduced with an 11-foot width restriction through early August so contractor crews can perform milling and overlay. 

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of roadway being reduced is located from Calvary Drive in Sikeston to Route 61.  

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 pm to 6 am daily through Thursday, August 1st.

EVENT TO BE HELD THIS WEEK TO HELP ADULTS LEARN YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID 

A course will be held later this month to teach adults about how to help a young person who is experiencing a mental health or substance abuse problem.  

The Youth Mental Health First Aid course has been scheduled for 8 am to 5 pm on June 12th at the University of Missouri Extension Office in Dexter.  

The course can be taken by anyone age 18 or older, but it is recommended for those who regularly have contact with young people, ages 12 to 18, including teachers, coaches, social workers, and faith leaders.  

The registration fee is $10 and includes lunch and a participant manual. To register, call 573-568-3344.

TWO THREE RIVERS COLLEGE STUDNETS COMPETING IN NATIONAL RODEO THIS WEEK 

The College National Finals Rodeo is underway and two area students will be competing.  

Three Rivers College rodeo team members, Jake Sellers and Madison Steele, are participating in the rodeo, which began on Sunday. 

Steele was the 2019 National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Ozark Region Breakaway Roping Champion, which secured her spot in the CNFR. 

Sellers ended the year in fourth place in the NIRA Ozark Region for bull riding. Since the competitor in third place was unable to attend the CNFR, Sellers got the call to take his place. 

The rodeo is scheduled to take place in Casper, Wyoming through June 15th.

ENDANGERED PERSON ADVISORY FOR KENNETT WOMAN CANCELLED 

Authorities have cancelled an Endangered Person Advisory for a Kennett woman after she was found safe.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 28 year old woman was reported missing over the weekend after a family member returned home to find her gone. 

The Highway Patrol reported on Sunday morning that the woman had been found safe and that the advisory had been cancelled. 

PUXICO MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK OVER THE WEEKEND 

A Puxico man was transported to an area hospital Saturday morning following a single vehicle wreck in Stoddard County.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 20 year old Julius Richard was driving on Route T, when his vehicle ran off the side of the road, struck an embankment, and overturned.  

Richard suffered moderate injuries in the wreck and was taken by ambulance to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

WRESTLING CAMP TO BE HELD THIS WEEK AT POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL 

Children in Poplar Bluff will have a chance to improve their wrestling skills at a camp this week.  

The Poplar Bluff Wrestling Camp will begin at 5:30 pm tonight at the Poplar Bluff High School wrestling room. The event will run from 5:30 pm to 7 pm through June 13th.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE SEEKING HELP IN IDENTIFYING SHOPLIFTING SUSPECT 

Authorities in Poplar Bluff are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect in a shoplifting complaint. 

The suspect reportedly stole multiple items, including a Bluetooth speaker, from Academy Sports and Outdoors.

ROAD PROJECT ON ROUTE 60 IN BUTLER, CARTER, AND SHANNON COUNTIES CONTINUES 

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, Travelers on east and westbound Route 60 should continue to expect temporary lane closures as contractor crews perform slope and drainage repairs. The project limits will extend from Route 67 in Poplar Bluff to Route E in Winona. 

As work is underway, Route 60 will be reduced with a 12-foot width restriction at various locations. Short, temporary work zones will be set up within the project limits. Each work zone will be in place for several days before crews move to the next location. 

Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by July 8th.

CHILDREN’S SUMMER READING PROGRAM CONTINUES AT POPLAR BLUFF MUNICIPAL LIBRARY 

The 2019 Children’s Summer Reading Program at the Poplar Bluff Municipal Library is now underway.  

This summer, kids can earn grand prize entries by reading and doing good deeds for their families, neighbors, friends, and the community. There will be multiple grand prizes, including Kindle Fire Tablets and bicycles.  

The free program is open to children and young adults between the ages of 3 and 17 until August 3rd.

MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY FOLLOWING REPORT OF SHOTS BEING FIRED 

Authorities in Portageville say that an area man has been taken into custody following a report of shots being fired.  

According to the Portageville Police Department, officers received the report shortly before 7 am Thursday morning.  

At the scene, officers found a gunshot had gone through the front door of a residence. An officer was able to obtain surveillance footage from nearby which showed a silver vehicle stop in front of the residence. The passenger's side window then rolled down and three shots were fired into the residence.  

The vehicle was later spotted southbound on Interstate 55 and after a short vehicle pursuit, the subject crashed near Hayti. The subject was taken into custody without incident.  

Officials say the subject has been identified as Marquizio Cline of Memphis, Tennessee. Cline is being held in the Pemiscot County Jail pending the filing of formal charges.

DEAD BODY CONFIRMED TO BE OF FORMER ARKANSAS STATE SENATOR 

Law enforcement officials have confirmed that a dead body found earlier this week is that of a former Arkansas State Senator.  

Officials with the Arkansas State Police say that the medical examiner confirmed that former state Senator Linda Collins-Smith's body was found outside her home Tuesday in Pocahontas.  

Police did not give a cause of death, but said Wednesday that they're investigating the case as a homicide. No arrests have been made and no suspects have been named in the death.

MARK TWAIN NATIONAL FOREST TO WAIVE DAY USE FEES ON SATURDAY 

Saturday is National Get Outdoors Day and officials at Mark Twain National Forrest are making it easier for citizens to participate in outdoor activates.  

In the spirit of the Day, the Mark Twain National Forest is encouraging outdoor activity by generally waiving fees for day-use areas on Saturday, such as picnic grounds and developed trailheads. 

In the Poplar Bluff Ranger District this includes the Markham Spring area.  

Fees will also still apply to Mark Twain National Forest sites operated by concessionaires.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING WRECK IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS 

A Pocahontas man has died following a wreck in Northeast Arkansas.  

According to the Arkansas State Police, 40 year old Brandon Provow was driving on Highway 67 in the Walnut Ridge Area when he failed to yield at a stop sign and pulled into the path of another vehicle.  

Officials say that Provow was killed in the wreck. No injuries were listed for the driver of the second vehicle.

CONTRACT AWARDED FOR BRIDGE REPLACEMENT IN WAYNE COUNTY 

A contract has been awarded for bridge replacements in Southeast Missouri.  

Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation tell KWOC News that the two million dollar contract includes the replacement of the bridge over Big Lake Creek on Route FF in Wayne County as well as other bridge replacements in Scott and Bollinger Counties.  

Contracts were also awarded earlier this week for guardrail and guard cable repairs on various routes throughout the Southeast District. 

Additional information, including timelines and impacts to traffic, will be released prior to the start of construction.

POPLAR BLUFF MIDDLE SCHOOL ASKING FOR PARENTS TO FILL OUT SURVEY 

School officials in Poplar Bluff want feedback from parents.  

The Poplar Bluff Middle School has issued a survey to gauge the needs and desires of families in the district.  

Parents are being asked to fill out the survey with your student and if you have more than one student attending the Poplar Bluff Middle School, you’re asked to fill it out multiple times.

ALMOST 100 JOBS TO BE AFFECTED BY CLOSURE OF KENNETT FACILITY 

Almost 100 jobs will be affected by the upcoming closure of a facility in Kennett.  

The Hose Products Division of Parker Hannifin has announced that the manufacturing facility in Kennett will be closed, affecting 92 full time employees.  

Operations will be transferred to other locations by the end of this September.  

The Kennett facility manufactures yarn reinforced rubber hose and will continue its manufacturing and assembly operations until all product lines are operational in their new locations.

TWO ARRESTED FOR METHAMPHETAMINE IN BUTLER COUNTY 

Two people were taken into custody last night in Butler County for methamphetamine.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 51 year old David Brannon, of Grandin, and 44 year old Angela Griffin, of Poplar Bluff, were each arrested shortly before midnight on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.  

They are also each facing a charge of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

SCHOOL BUS INSPECTION RESULTS RELEASED 

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has announced the results of the Driver and Vehicle Safety Division's 2019 annual school bus inspection program. 

As a part of the program, buses found to have no defective items are rated as "approved.” Buses having one or more defective items which do not constitute an immediate danger are rated as "defective.” Buses with any defective items which constitute an immediate danger are rated as "out-of-service.” 

In Butler County, Poplar Bluff R-1 had 40 of the district’s 43 buses listed as approved. Two were rated as defective and one as out of service.  

Neelyville R-4 had five of 16 buses rated as defective and three were listed as out of service. 13 of the 14 school buses for Twin Rivers R-X were approved with one rated as defective.  

Over 89 percent of buses statewide were rated as approved.

NEW CASES OF HEPATITIS A CONFIRMED IN BUTLER COUNTY 

Health officials say that there have been new confirmed cases of Hepatitis A in Butler County.  

According to the Butler County Health Department, there have been two new laboratory confirmed cases of Hep A.  

Due to this, the Health Department has scheduled two Hepatitis A immunization clinics for this month at the Health Department. 

The first clinic will be held on Friday, June 7th, with the second coming on Monday, June 24th. Both have been scheduled for 8 am to 4 pm.  

Officials say anyone who is around someone who uses drugs or uses drugs themselves should get vaccinated.

HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY FOLLOWING REPORTED DEATH OF FORMER ARKANSAS STATE SENATOR 

Updating a story we brought to you yesterday, authorities in Northeast Arkansas are conducting a homicide investigation following the reported death of a former State Senator.  

Arkansas Republican Party officials reported the death of 57 year old Linda Collins-Smith on Tuesday, the same day that unidentified human remains were found outside her home in Pocahontas.   

Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler declined to identify the victim. Prosecutor Henry Boyce said the body was a woman's, but said its condition prevented any immediate positive identification. 

Police say the state crime lab was determining the cause and manner of death. A Randolph County judge has granted Boyce's request for an order sealing the documents and statements obtained by police during the investigation.

DEXTER WOMAN ARRESTED ON DRUG RELATED WARRANTS 

Authorities in Stoddard County have taken an area woman into custody on drug related warrants.  

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 30 year old Heather Harris, of Dexter, was recently arrested on two warrants, one for unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and the other for possession of a controlled substance.  

Her bond was set at $7,500, cash only, and officials say she remained in jail as of this morning.

ANOTHER POPLAR BLUFF NATIVE CHOSEN IN MLB DRAFT 

Another Poplar Bluff native has been chosen in the MLB Draft.  

Quincy University’s Cody Birdsong was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 32nd round.  

At Quincy University, Birdsong started all 111 games over two years, hitting .319 over that span. He also added 27 home runs and 92 RBIs.

POPLAR BLUFF SCIENCE TEACHER RECOGNIZED FOR HER WORK IN THE CLASSROOM

THREE ARRESTED ON DRUG TRAFFICKING CHARGES IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Three men were arrested earlier this week in Southeast Missouri on drug trafficking charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 41 year old Corey Crosby, of Indianapolis, Indiana, 24 year old Jamari Jenkins, of Woodville, Mississippi, and 21 year old Brandon Wallace, of Clinton, Louisiana were each taken into custody Monday night in Pemiscot County.

The three were each arrested on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance for ecstasy and oxycodone as well as drug trafficking.

Jenkins is also facing a felony charge of possession of a stolen firearm.

INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY FOLLOWING DEATH OF FORMER ARKANSAS STATE SENATOR

An investigation has been started following the death of a former Arkansas State Senator.

Multiple outlets are reporting that Linda Collins-Smith was discovered dead in her home on Tuesday.

She served in the Arkansas House of Representatives from 2011 to 2013. She was then elected to the Arkansas Senate in 2014.

Collin-Smith was 57 years old.

VANDALISM REPORTED AT AREA LIBRARY

An area library says it is dealing with an act of vandalism.

According to the Rector Public Library Facebook page, someone got into the back area and stole all of the freon out of their air conditioner. The repairs will cost over $700.

Officials are asking area residents that if they see someone messing around in the parking lot of the library, please report them to Library officials or the police.

TWO THREE RIVERS COLLEGE STUDENTS TO COMPETE IN NATIONAL RODEO STARTING ON SUNDAY

The College National Finals Rodeo is set to begin this weekend and two area students will be competing.

AREA MAN DIES FOLLOWING WRECK IN BUTLER COUNTY 

An area man has died following a wreck Monday morning in Butler County. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 88 year old Edgar Holden, of Harviell, was driving on US Highway 160 when he pulled into the path of another vehicle.  

Holden was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital where he was pronounced dead. No injuries were listed for the driver of the second vehicle.

MAN FACING MULTIPLE CHARGES IN CONNECTION TO OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING 

Updating a story we brought to you yesterday, a Sikeston man is facing multiple charges in connection to an officer involved shooting Sunday night in Southeast Missouri.  

Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that 49 year old Larry Maddox has been charged with two counts of assault in the 1st degree - special victim, four counts of armed criminal action, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, and one count of unlawful possession of a firearm.  

Maddox had allegedly shot at a state trooper on Highway 60 near Sikeston. The trooper then shot at the man and struck him.  

Maddox remains at a local hospital and his bond has been set at $250,000.

STODDARD COUNTY ROAD CLOSED FOR BRIDGE REPLACEMENT 

Route DD in Stoddard County has been closed so contractor crews can replace a bridge.   

MoDOT officials tell KWOC News that the bridge is located over Spring Creek between County Road 593 and County Road 372 near Vanduser. 

The bridge is scheduled to re-open on Friday, September 6th.

HEAVY RAINFALL POSSIBLE FOR LATER THIS WEEK 

Weather officials say that Southeast Missouri could see some heavy rainfall this week.  

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, locally heavy rainfall is possible later this week as tropical moisture moves into the area.  

Parts of Butler, Ripley, Wayne, Carter, Stoddard, and New Madrid Counties could all see four to six inches of rainfall.  

Officials say the heaviest rainfall is expected Thursday through Saturday night.

ADVANCE MAN ARRESTED ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WARRANT 

Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested an area man on a controlled substance warrant.  

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 33 year old Johnathan Harwood, of Advance, was recently arrested on a warrant of delivery of a controlled substance.  

His bond has been set at 25,000 dollars, cash only. Officials say Harwood remained in custody as of this morning.

KAMERON MISNER SELECTED BY THE MIAMI MARLINS IN THE MLB DRAFT 

A Poplar Bluff native was chosen in last night’s Major League Baseball draft.  

Outfielder Kameron Misner was selected by the Miami Marlins with the 35th pick.  

Misner graduated from Poplar Bluff High School in 2016 and was drafted in the 33rd round by the Kansas City Royals in the 2016 MLB First Year Player Draft.  

Misner choose to attend the University of Missouri where he had a batting average of over .300 with 21 home runs and 91 RBI’s over three seasons.

MAN INJURED IN SHOOTING INVOLVING STATE TROOPERS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 

A man was injured in a shooting involving law enforcement on Sunday.  

According to authorities, the man had shot at a state trooper on Highway 60 near Sikeston. The trooper then shot at the man and struck him.  

The man, whose identity was not available, was transported to a hospital for treatment. The incident is under investigation.

FOUR INJURED IN WRECK NEAR VAN BUREN SATURDAY NIGHT 

Four people were injured, two seriously, in a wreck Saturday night near Van Buren.  

According to authorities, the wreck occurred at around 8:45 pm on Highway 21 in Carter County when a vehicle was attempting to make a left turn and travelled into the path of a motorcycle.  

Two people on the motorcycle, both Poplar Bluff residents, were ejected and suffered serious injuries. One was flown to a Jonesboro hospital, while the other was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital. Two teenage passengers in the first vehicle received moderate injuries.

DRAINAGE REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS ON HIGHWAY 53 IN BUTLER COUNTY THIS WEEK 

Route 53 in Butler County is scheduled to be reduced to one lane early this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform drainage repairs. 

MoDOT officials tell KWOC News that the section of roadway to be reduced is located from County Road 616 to County Road 617. 

Weather permitting, work will performed today and tomorrow from 8 am to 3:30 pm each day.

POPLAR BLUFF NATIVE COULD BE SELECTED TODAY IN THE MLB DRAFT 

A Poplar Bluff native could be selected during the first round of the Major League Baseball draft.  

According to MLB.com, University of Missouri outfielder Kameron Misner is projected to be taken during the late part of the first round of the draft today.  

Misner graduated from Poplar Bluff High School in 2016 and was drafted in the 33rd round by the Kansas City Royals in the 2016 MLB First Year Player Draft.  

Misner choose to attend the University of Missouri where he has a batting average of over .300 with 21 home runs and 91 RBI’s over three seasons.  

The first and second round of the MLB Draft will be held tonight beginning at 7 pm on the MLB Network and at MLB.com.

DONIPHAN MAN KILLED IN MOTORCYCLE WRECK 

A Doniphan man was killed over the weekend in a motorcycle wreck in Carter County.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 35 year old Keith Gambling was driving on Highway 21 Saturday morning when his motorcycle ran off the side of the road and struck a utility pole.  

Gambling was ejected and later pronounced dead at the scene by Carter County Coroner Eric McSpadden. 

MATTRESS ON HIGHWAY 53 CAUSES WRECK IN QULIN AREA 

A mattress caused a wreck Friday night near Qulin.  

According to authorities, a 60 year old Poplar Bluff man was riding a motorcycle on Highway 53 when he struck a mattress in the roadway, around two miles south of Qulin.  

Officials say the incident occurred at around 9:20 pm Friday.  

The man suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

DELAYS SET FOR TODAY ON ROUTE 60 IN CARTER COUNTY 

Westbound Route 60 in Carter County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform roadside work.  

The section of Westbound Route 60 to be reduced is located 1 mile west of Route B.  

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7:30 am to 4 pm.

The city of Ellington is celebrating a baseball title.  

The Ellington Whippets defeated the Seymour Tigers on Friday 9 to 0 to win the Class 2 state championship.  

Kaleb Richards got the win for the Whippets, pitching all seven innings and only giving up four hits and no walks.

MAN FACING CHARGES IN CONNECTION TO DUMPSTER FIRE THAT SPREAD TO AREA BUSINESS 

A Poplar Bluff man is facing charges in connection to a dumpster fire that spread to an area business.  

Officials with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tell KWOC News that at approximately 10:30 pm on May 25th, officers responded to a dumpster fire located behind Letassy Pharmacy.  

The fire totally engulfed the dumpster and spread to adjacent fencing, damaging the pharmacy’s generator and equipment owned by Poplar Bluff Municipal Utilities. Additionally, a satellite dish attached to the pharmacy was damaged. 

An investigation led to a suspect being identified as 49 year old Kenneth Allen Jr., of Poplar Bluff.  

On Wednesday, Allen was located and interviewed about the incident. Officials say he has been lodged at the Butler County Justice Center, pending the filing of the formal charges of knowingly burning or exploding and property damage in the first degree.

HIGHWAY PATROL ENCOURAGES BOATERS TO STAY OFF OF FLOODED WATERWAYS 

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol are encouraging boaters to avoid boating on flooded waterways.  

Captain Matt Walz, director of the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Water Patrol Division, is asking boaters to avoid flooded areas where boating traffic may negatively impact community flood damage prevention efforts.  

The Missouri and Mississippi rivers and the many associated tributaries to those rivers are experiencing major flooding, so those waterways are particularly vulnerable to additional damage. 

Walz says that many communities are working to prevent additional flood damage from occurring and unnecessary boating traffic in these areas can adversely affect those efforts.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE DEPARTMENT TRYING TO IDENTIFY ALLEGED BOOK THIEF 

Officials with the Poplar Bluff Police Department are trying to identify an alleged book thief.  

The Police Department has released video footage that shows a man running from the Poplar Bluff Municipal Library on May 28th.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI BASEBALL TEAM TO PLAY FOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TODAY 

A Southeast Missouri baseball team will be playing today for a state championship.  

The Ellington Whippets will be taking on the Seymour Tigers in the Class 2 State Finals at O’Fallon. First pitch is scheduled for 11 am.  

The Whippets are entering the game with a 28-1 season record, with their lone loss coming earlier this month against Kennett. Seymour has a 21-7 record for the season.

REGISTRATION IS OPEN FOR THREE RIVERS ENDOWMENT TRUST GOLF TOURNAMENT 

The 7th annual Three Rivers Endowment Trust Golf Tournament has been scheduled for Friday, June 14th at the Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff. 

The four-person scramble tournament will begin with check in and lunch at noon, followed by a shotgun start at 1 pm. There will also be a reception beginning at 5:30 pm that is open to the public. 

According to officials, all proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Three Rivers Annual Fund, which funds special projects and helps make a difference in the lives of TRC students.

EARTHQUAKE SHAKES PARTS OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 

Did you feel the earthquake that hit Southeast Missouri last night? 

According to the United States Geological Survey, a 2.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 9:23 pm Thursday night.  

The earthquake was centered around three miles northwest of Marston and it had a depth of just over four miles.

THOUSANDS LOST POWER WEDNESDAY DURING STORMS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Thousands of people were without power for a period of time Wednesday as a line of strong storms passed over the area.

According to Poplar Bluff Municipal Utilities, 2,322 customers were impacted by an outage that started at 6:15 pm when a tree blew into a power line. The outage came to an end at 6:55 pm.

The National Weather Service also reported that numerous trees and power lines were down from Dexter to Puxico as well as in several other locations around our listening area.

As of 4:45 this morning, Ozark Border Electric was reporting outages for 13 consumers in Butler County and Ameren Missouri was reporting that 56 customers were without service in the Dexter area.

There were also reports of trees damaging homes in Doniphan, Dexter, and Ravenden Springs. The Corning High School also sustained damage due to the storm. Officials say that a 65 mile per hour wind gust was measured at an observation station in Doniphan shortly before 6 pm.

SEVEN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO METHAMPHETAMINE TRAFFICKING IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Multiple men were taken into custody Wednesday on methamphetamine trafficking charges in Southeast Missouri.

Officials with the United States Attorney’s Office tell KWOC News that seven individuals were arrested on federal charges of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and distribution of methamphetamine. One additional individual was taken into custody on an unrelated state arrest warrant.

Federal, state and local investigators also seized two handguns and approximately $20,000 in suspected drug proceeds.

The individuals arrested include 40 year old Santonio Parker, of Kennett, 31 year old Rayshaun Reed, of Hayti, 42 year old Lavan Johnson, of Caruthersville, and 57 year old Robert Arnold, of Cape Girardeau, as well as 35 year old Korey Johnson, 27 year old Jaamil Owens, and 32 year old Bradley Johnson, each of Hayti Heights.

The seven individuals taken into custody were specifically charged as follows:

Lavan Cortez Johnson, 42, of Caruthersville, Missouri, and Robert Lee Arnold, 57, of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, were charged with conspiring to distribute 500 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine, and distribution of 50 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine.

Korey Linnell Johnson, 35, Jaamil Demonta Owens, 27, and Bradley Omar Johnson, 32, all of Hayti Heights, Missouri, were charged with conspiring to distribute 500 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine, and distribution of 50 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine.

Santonio Omar Parker, 40, Kennett, Missouri, was charged with distribution of 50 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine.

Rayshaun Reed, 31, Hayti, Missouri, was also charged with distribution of 50 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine.

Charges set forth in the Indictment are merely accusations and do not constitute proof of guilt. Every defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty.

GREENVILLE CAMPGROUND TO REOPEN TODAY

Officials with the US Army Corps of Engineers say that the Greenville Campground and Day Use Area will be re-opening today at noon.

Reservations will be accepted beginning this morning.

Even through reservations are being accepted, officials say the St. Francis River level may rise depending on any precipitation within the watershed and could result in a sudden closure or cancellation.

Closures will be administered based upon both lake levels and the best predicted forecasts by weather professionals.

POPLAR BLUFF TEEN FACING METH AND MARIJUANA CHARGES

Authorities in Butler County have arrested an area teenager on multiple drug related charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 18 year old Jacob Woods, of Poplar Bluff, was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Woods is also facing charges of possession of marijuana – less than 35 grams and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

Following his arrest, Woods was held at the Butler County Jail.

CRIME PREVENTION SEMINAR SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN ELLSINORE

The Carter County Sheriff’s Office and the Van Buren Police Department are teaming up for a Crime Prevention Seminar the evening.

The event will be held at the Ellsinore Youth and Community Center beginning at 5 pm.

Area citizens are being invited to join in the discussion on ways to make the community safer.

RIPLEY COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE TO HOLD DRIVERS EDUCATION CLASS

An area sheriff’s department will be hosting a driver’s education class this week.

According to Ripley County Sheriff Mike Barton, the Ripley County Sheriff's Office and the Southeast Coalition for Roadway Safety will be holding the class at Productive Staffing in Poplar Bluff from 5 pm to 9 pm on Friday and 8 am to 3 pm on Saturday.

There is no cost for the class but students must complete all hours of instruction and they will receive a certificate of completion.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE PROJECTS UNDERWAY IN STODDARD, NEW MADRID, AND SCOTT COUNTIES

Route 114 in Stoddard, New Madrid and Scott Counties is being reduced with an 11-foot width restriction so contractor crews perform bridge maintenance on multiple bridges.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the bridges involved in the project are located between Route 60 in Morehouse and Route 61 in Sikeston.

Weather permitting, work will be performed from 6 am to 6 pm daily through Friday, June 7th.

SCATTERED STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS EXPECTED FOR TONIGHT 

We could be looking at another round of severe weather coming our way later today.  

According to a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by the National Weather Service in Paducah, scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are expected today and tonight. Large Hail and Damaging Winds are the primary hazards, but a few tornadoes may be possible in the vicinity of frontal boundaries. 

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma has also placed most of southeast Missouri in an enhanced risk of severe thunderstorms today and tonight. 

Locally heavy rain and frequently lightning will also occur with these thunderstorms and may cause localized flooding. Weather officials say the potential for clusters of thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts may increase during the afternoon and early evening hours.

AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING THEFTS IN NEW MADRID 

Authorities in New Madrid are investigating thefts from vehicles in the city.  

According to the New Madrid Police Department, overnight Sunday night and early Monday morning, several unlocked vehicles were entered in the area of Kingshighway, St. Mark, St. Matthew, and St. Vincent. 

Two stolen items have been recovered.  

Police are asking anyone with surveillance cameras in the area to check their cameras for anyone walking on the night of the 26th or morning of the 27th.

PAVEMENT IMPROVEMENTS TO BEGIN TODAY ON ROUTE 60 IN CARTER AND SHANNON COUNTIES 

Eastbound Route 60 in Carter and Shannon Counties will be reduced with a 12-foot width restriction beginning today so contractor crews can perform pavement repairs.  

Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation tell KWOC News that the work zones will be located on Route 60 from Route 19 to County Road 60C near Winona and from County Road 583 to Route P.
Weather permitting, work is scheduled to take place today through Friday, July 19th from 6:30 am to 8 pm daily.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON METH CHARGE AND FELONY WARRANT 

A Poplar Bluff man was taken into custody Tuesday morning on a felony meth charge.   

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 40 year old, Onas Yount was arrested in Butler County on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.  

Officials say that Yount also had a felony warrant out of Wayne County for failure to appear for theft.  

Following his arrest, Yount was held at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.

POPLAR BLUFF STUDENT TO PARTICIPATE IN STATE ACADEMIC PROGRAM 

A Poplar Bluff High School student has been selected to participate in a statewide academic program.  

Incoming junior Lauren Robertson is one of 330 gifted students across Missouri to be accepted into the Missouri Scholars Academy, which will begin next month at the University of Missouri campus in Columbia. 

The Academy offers a three-week curriculum designed to help advanced students realize their full potential through learning and personal development administered by Mizzou's Honors College. 

Consideration is based on cumulative grade point average, aptitude test results, IQ scores and student essays. Counselor Sara Holloway says the nomination process begins in the fall, and only one PBHS student is submitted for approval each year.  

This is the second year in a row a Poplar Bluff student has been accepted for the program. Ross Dare participated last year.

SOME FISHING PERMITS AND DAILY TAGS COULD INCREASE IN PRICE NEXT YEAR 

Some Missouri fishing permits could be increasing in price next year.  

The Missouri Department of Conservation has announced they are proposing increases to the prices of its annual trout permits and daily trout tags.  

If the price increases are implemented, starting in 2020 the cost of an annual trout permit will go from $7 to $10 for anglers 16 years of age and older and from $3.50 to $5 for anglers ages 15 and younger.  

The cost of a daily trout tag to fish at Missouri’s four trout parks will go from $3 to $4 for adults and from $2 to $3 for those 15 years of age and younger. 

Officials say the increases are needed to better cover its costs of running five trout hatcheries that raise and release more than 1.7 million trout each year for public fishing. 

As part of the rulemaking process, the MDC is asking for public comments on the changes during July and early August at short.mdc.mo.gov/Z49.

MAN FOUND DEAD IN CARTER COUNTY 

An Eminence man was found dead over the weekend in Carter County.  

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 48 year old Kenneth Yarber had been reported missing by family members before being found on Saturday, four miles south of Van Buren.  

Yarber was driving a vehicle on a hillside when the vehicle slid downhill and overturned. The exact time of the accident is unknown.

GOVERNOR PARSON ACTIVATES MISSOURI NATIONAL GUARD 

Governor Mike Parson announced yesterday that he was activating the Missouri National Guard.  

Parson signed an executive order Monday directing National Guard members to help with response efforts in Jefferson City, where residents are still recovering from a tornado that struck last week. 

The National Guard is also headed to Chariton County to sandbag around a stressed levee near the city of Brunswick.

FOUR POPLAR BLUFF ATHLETES PLACE IN TOP 10 DURING EVENTS AT STATE TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIP 

Multiple Poplar Bluff students qualified for all state honors during the MSHSAA Class 5 State Track and Field Championship on Saturday in Columbia.  

Poplar Bluff’s Gage Rowland placed 7th in the pole vault, Khelie Spence placed 8th in the 100 Meter Hurdles, Marquis Johnson placed 8th in the Long Jump, and Xzavier Bartlett placed 8th in the 400 Meter Dash.  

Overall the Mules boys’ track and field team ended up in 33rd place, while the girls finished in 41st place.

TWO ARRESTED IN BUTLER COUNTY FOR DELIVERY OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE 

Two Arkansas men were arrested last week in Butler County for delivery of a controlled substance.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 56 year old Raymond Martin, of Randolph, and 30 year old Joseph March, of Reyno, were each taken into custody Friday night on a felony charge of delivery of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.  

March was also arrested on charges of possession of marijuana and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.  

Following their arrests, both men were held at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.

TWO TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON METH AND PARAPHERNALIA CHARGES IN RIPLEY COUNTY 

Authorities in Ripley County have arrested two people on drug related charges.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 32 year old Brandon Greenway, of Springdale, Arkansas, and 26 year old Kellii Greenway, of Paragould, were both taken into custody Sunday afternoon, shortly after 4 pm.  

They were each arrested on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance for methamphetamine as well as misdemeanor charges of possession of paraphernalia and possession of synthetic cannabis.  

Both were held at the Wayne County Jail.

TEENAGER SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WRECK NEAR ELLINGTON 

A Southeast Missouri teenager has been flown to an area hospital after being involved in a wreck Monday night.  

According to authorities, 19 year old Skyler Odell, of Ellington, was driving on Route K in Reynolds County when her vehicle ran off the side of the roadway, travelled into a ditch, and hit an embankment.  

Odell suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a St. Louis area hospital.
