HEAT ADVISORY TO BE IN EFFECT TODAY FOR MISSOURI BOOTHEEL AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Area residents should remember to stay out of the sun today if you can. 

A heat advisory will be in effect today for Northeast Arkansas along with Dunklin and Pemiscot Counties in Southeast Missouri from 11 am to 8 pm. 

According to the National Weather Service, heat index readings are expected to reach up to 104 to 109 degrees today in those areas. 

If you plan to be outside today, remember to wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

SIX INJURED, INCLUDING FOUR YOUNG CHILDREN, IN WRECK INVOLVING A FREIGHTLINER

Six people were injured, including four young children, in a wreck last night in Pemiscot County. 

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the wreck occurred shortly before 8 pm, around two miles west of Hayti. A vehicle, driven by 32 year old Kerry Crosby, of Caruthersville, allegedly pulled into the path of a freightliner on US Highway 412. 

Crosby, along with a 26 year old and one year old passenger in her vehicle, suffered serious injuries and were flown to Memphis hospitals. 

Three other young children in Crosby’s vehicle received moderate or minor injuries. 

TWO PEOPLE FOUND DEAD IN THE EAST PRAIRIE AREA

Authorities in Mississippi County are investigating the deaths of two people. 

According to authorities, the two were recently found dead in a residence in the East Prairie area. Their identities were not released. 

Officials say that autopsies are set to be conducted today. 

NO ONE INJURED IN FIRE IN STODDARD COUNTY

Nobody was injured during a fire yesterday in Stoddard County. 

According to authorities, multiple fuel tanks caught on fire at a farm in the Bernie area. 

Fire crews from several area communities assisted with extinguishing the fire and there was no one hurt. 

MAN ARRESTED ON METH CHARGE IN BUTLER COUNTY

An area man has been taken into custody in Butler County on a felony drug charge. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 47 year old Danny McKinnon, of Poplar Bluff, was arrested Wednesday on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine. 

McKinnon is also reportedly facing charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while revoked. Following the arrest, he was held at the Butler County Jail. 

DUNKLIN COUNTY SHERIFF WARNS OF PHONE SCAM

Officials in Dunkin County say that there is a scam caller that is targeting area residents. 

Dunklin County Sheriff Bob Holder tells KWOC News that there is an individual calling Dunklin County residents, stating they have a warrant out of Dunklin County. 

The caller then says that in order to keep from being arrested, the person should go to an area store and purchase two cards with the money to be mailed to a designated city.  

Holder says that if you receive a phone call stating you have a warrant and requesting money, it is a scam. 

Any questions relating to a request for money from the Dunklin County Sheriffs' Office is also a scam.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN KILLED IN WRECK IN BUTLER COUNTY

A Poplar Bluff man was found dead Monday at the scene of a wreck in Butler County.

According to Butler County Coroner Andy Moore, on the evening of July 9th a vehicle accident related to a reported stolen truck was discovered near Neelyville. Upon investigation a single occupant was found deceased within the vehicle.

The occupant has been identified as 40 year old Dwayne Young.

Moore says Young was an acquaintance of the owner of the truck that was reported stolen. The owner stated that Young had been at her residence in the days leading up to the stolen vehicle report.

IDENTITY RELEASED OF MAN FOUND DEAD IN POPLAR BLUFF PARK

Updating a story we brought to you yesterday, authorities have released the identity of a body that was found earlier this week in a Poplar Bluff park.

The body of 38 year old Jamie Bell was discovered at around 7 am Monday morning at Sportsman’s Park.

Butler County Coroner Andy Moore tells KWOC News that no foul play is believed to have been involved in the death.

TWIN RIVERS SCHOOL DISTRICT TO HOST REGISTRATION EVENT IN EARLY AUGUST

The Twin Rivers School District has announced that it will be holding a registration event for all students in Kindergarten through 12th grade early next month.

Royal Registration is scheduled for 1 to 7 pm on Tuesday, August 7th, at Twin Rivers High School in Broseley.

There will be booths set up for parents to turn in their updated enrollment forms, receive students schedules, discuss student health concerns with the nurses, ask transportation questions, and allow students to have their school picture taken.

Officials say that a packet will be mailed home on July 20th with the enrollment paperwork that must be completed and returned at Royal Registration.

STURDIVANT MAN CHARGED WITH RAPE

A man is facing a rape charge out of Bollinger County.

According to Missouri Case Net, Roy Jones, of Sturdivant, has been charged with multiple felonies including 2nd degree rape.

Jones’ arraignment has been scheduled for 9 am this morning in Bollinger County.

Parts of Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas will be under a heat advisory this afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, the heat advisory will be in effect from 11 am to 8 pm.

Heat index values are expected to peak near 105 degrees this afternoon.

The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Remember to drink plenty of fluids and stay out of the sun if possible.

HAYTI MAN ARRESTED ON FLEEING CHARGE IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

Authorities in Pemiscot County have arrested an area man on multiple charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 30 year old Alnelius Fisher, of Hayti, was taken into custody Tuesday night on charges including resisting arrest by fleeing and driving while suspended.

Following the arrest, Fisher was held at the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Office.

WAYNE COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR ASPHALT OVERLAY

Missouri Route 143 in Wayne County will be closed both today and tomorrow so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can overlay the road with asphalt.

The section of roadway to be closed is located north of Sam A. Baker Park to the Iron County Line.

Work is scheduled to be performed from 7 am to 4:30 pm both days.

BODY DISCOVERED IN POPLAR BLUFF PARK

An investigation is underway following the discovery of a body in a Poplar Bluff park. 

According to authorities, the body was found at around 7 am Monday morning at Sportsman’s Park on the east side of town. 

No information has been released about the identity of the body or a cause of death.

We will keep following this story and bring you additional information as it becomes available. 

DEADLINE APPROACHING TO REGISTER TO VOTE IN MISSOURI PRIMARY ELECTION

The deadline is approaching to make sure you’re registered to vote in Missouri’s upcoming primary election. 

According to the Missouri Secretary of State’s Office, the last day to register for the Missouri primary election is tomorrow. 

The primary election is scheduled for Tuesday, August 7th.

CARUTHERSVILLE MAN FACING AN ASSAULT ON A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER CHARGE

A Southeast Missouri man was taken into custody last week on an assault charge. 

According to authorities, 21 year old Gary Gale Jr., of Caruthersville, was arrested Friday for an alleged assault on a law enforcement officer by means of a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument. 

Gale’s bond was set at $25,000 and he was taken to the Pemiscot County Justice Center. 

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE THEATER COMPANY TO PERFORM THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE ABRIDGED

A local theater company comprised of students and employees of Three Rivers College, as well as members of the community, will be performing a comedic interpretation of the various plays of William Shakespeare next week.

Tickets are now available for “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged.” Performances will be held at 7 pm on July 19th through the 21st and at 2 pm on July 22nd at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center. 

Director Dr. Michael Malone says that all of Shakespeare’s plays will be comically squeezed into the performance, including a rapping Othello, a Romeo and Juliet parody, and a minute version of Hamlet.

Tickets are available for $10 or $5 with a TRC ID at the Three Rivers Student Accounts Office. Tickets will also be sold at the door.

DOES THE MISSOURI STATE HIGHWAY PATROL HAVE THE BEST LOOKING CRUISER? 

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is asking for your vote in determining what the best looking cruiser in the nation is. 

The Highway Patrol is taking part in the American Association of State Troopers’ "2018 America's Best Looking Cruiser Contest."

The 2018 MSHP submission features a marked patrol vehicle with Missouri’s Capitol in the background.

ROAD PROJECT SET TO BEGIN TODAY IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

Route Z in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction beginning today so contractor crews can perform pavement improvements.

Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation say that, the section of roadway to be reduced is located from Route 412 to Route 164.

Weather permitting; work will take place from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm daily through Friday, July 20th.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FACING METHAMPHETAMINE CHARGE FOLLOWING ARREST IN BUTLER COUNTY

Authorities in Butler County have arrested a Poplar Bluff man on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 31 year old Carl Hiles was taken into custody Saturday night on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Hiles is also facing charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while suspended. Following the arrest, he was held at the Butler County Jail.

SOME SOUTHEAST MISSORUI RESIDENTS COULD BE SEEING LOWER ELECTRIC BILLS STARTING NEXT MONTH

Some residents of Southeast Missouri could be seeing a lower electric bill beginning next month.

The Missouri Public Service Commission has approved an agreement which reduces the electric revenues for Ameren Missouri by about 6 percent, or $166.5 million.

Under the new rates, a residential customer using 1,000 killowatts a month would see a rate decrease of about $6.21 a month.

The Commission says that the rate decrease reflects a reduction in the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21% as a result of passage of the federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017.

WAYNE COUNTY ROAD SET TO BE CLOSED EARLY THIS WEEK FOR REPAIRS

Route E in Wayne County will be closed early this week so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can overlay the road with asphalt.

The closure will be located from Business 67 to Route C.

Weather permitting, work will take place today and tomorrow from 7:30 am to 5 pm each day.

TWO SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WRECK ON INTERSTATE 55

Two Illinois residents were seriously injured in a wreck Sunday morning in Pemiscot County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the wreck occurred at around 8 am Sunday on Interstate 55.

A motorhome, driven by 66 year old Catherine Hogan, of Country Club Hills, Illinois, ran off the side of the roadway and overturned. Hogan was flown to a Memphis hospital with serious injuries.

An 82 year old passenger also suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was transported to a Hayti hospital.

BRIDGE REPAIRS TO FORCE CLOSURE OF STODDARD COUNTY ROAD

A portion of Route P in Stoddard County will be closed for over two months beginning today as contractor crews replace a bridge deck.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the bridge is located between Route Y and County Road 516.

Officials say that the bridge is scheduled to re-open on Sunday, September 30th.

DATE SET FOR 10TH ANNUAL MULE SKINNER GOLF TOURNAMENT

The date has been set for the 10th Annual Mule Skinner Golf Tournament.

The 4 person scramble tournament will be held on Friday, August 3rd at the Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff. Organizers say the entry fee is $500 per team, which includes a cart and lunch. Hole sponsorships are also available for $100 per hole.

All proceeds will go to benefit the Poplar Bluff Mules athletics programs.

SUSPECT IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO SIKESTON SHOOTING

Authorities in Sikeston say that a man is facing an assault charge in connection to a shooting on the 4th of July. 

According to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, a 44 year old Sikeston man was shot in the abdomen Wednesday morning. The victim is expected to make a full recovery.

A suspect in the case, 66 year old Alvin Jones, of Sikeston, has been taken into custody and charged with assault 1st, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. His bond was set at $100,000 cash only. 

Officials say that the victim and suspect were both romantically involved with the same woman; however it is unclear if that was the reason for the assault. 

TWO ARRESTED ON METH CHARGES IN BUTLER COUNTY

Two Poplar Bluff residents have been taken into custody on a felony meth charge. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 44 year old Bobby Duncan and 41 year old Angela Duncan were each arrested shortly before 10 am Thursday on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and a misdemeanor charge unlawful use of drug paraphernalia. 

Following the arrest, both were held at the Butler County Jail. 

TEENAGER ARRESTED ON DOMESTIC ASSAULT AND WEAPON CHARGES

A teenager has been taken into custody in Kennett in connection to an alleged altercation involving a knife earlier this week. 

According to the Kennett Police Department, shortly before 5 pm on Sunday, officers were dispatched to an area residence in reference to a subject armed with a knife who was attempting to cut someone.

Following an investigation, officers arrested a 17 year old Kennett resident for domestic assault 1st degree, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon.

MISSOURI STATE HIGHWAY PATROL TO HOLD MULTIPLE ENFORCEMENT PROJECTS THIS MONTH

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has announced they will be holding multiple enforcement projects this month in Southeast Missouri. 

Captain Jeffrey Vitale, commanding officer of Troop E of the Highway Patrol, tells KWOC News that sometime during the month of July, Troop E officers will be conducting two impaired driving enforcement operations.

An exact time frame or scope for the operations was not released. 

The operations will be conducted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol in cooperation with local law enforcement agencies.

ONE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AFTER ATTEMPTING TO PASS COUNTERFEIT CURRENCY IN KENNETT

Authorities in Kennett say that an area resident has been taken into custody after allegedly attempting to use fake money. 

Officials with the Kennett Police Department tell KWOC News that on Wednesday, officers were dispatched to a local convenience store in reference to a subject attempting to pass counterfeit currency. While on the way, the officers learned the suspect had fled the scene. 

48 year old Jackie Gattis, of Kennett, was located and arrested on an active warrant. During the arrest, officers located an undisclosed amount of marijuana on Gattis’ person. Gattis was arrested for counterfeiting as well as possession of marijuana.

Officials say that during the booking process, an undisclosed amount of methamphetamine was also located on Gattis’ person.

Gattis was held in the Dunklin County Justice Center on the warrant and pending the filing of formal charges by the Dunklin County Prosecutor’s office.

DATES SET FOR OPEN HOUSE AND ORIENTATIONS IN THE POPLAR BLUFF R-1 SCHOOL DISTRICT

Parents in Poplar Bluff will have the opportunity to learn more about the schools their children will be attending this fall during a series of open houses scheduled for next month. 

Open houses will be held for the Kindergarten, 5th and 6th grades on Monday, August 13th. The 7th grade orientation will also be held on the 13th at the Junior High. 

On Tuesday, August 14th, there will be the 4th grade orientation at the Middle School as well as the 8th grade Open House at the Junior High. 

Early Childhood parent orientation is also scheduled for August 14th, with the Early Childhood Open House two weeks later on the 28th. 

The four elementary schools will be holding their Open Houses on Wednesday, August 15th. 

For Poplar Bluff High School, freshman orientation is set for Wednesday, August 8th, and the Open House will be held on Tuesday, August 21st.

TEENAGER DROWNS AFTER JUMPING OFF EMBANKMENT IN MADISON COUNTY

A Missouri teenager reportedly drowned Wednesday in Southeast Missouri.

According to authorities in Madison County, 19 year old Cole Duffell, of Chesterfield, jumped off an embankment, resurfaced for a short period of time, went back under the surface of the water, and did not reappear.

The incident occurred at around 1:45 pm at Offset Quarry, two miles north of Fredericktown.

Duffell’s body was taken to the Madison County Coroner’s Office.

TWO ARRESTED ON DRUG AND WEAPON CHARGES IN BUTLER COUNTY

Two area men were arrested Tuesday morning in Butler County on drug and weapon charges.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 28 year old Eric Isom, of Poplar Bluff, and Christopher Johnson, of Dexter, were each taken into custody shortly after 8 am Tuesday on a felony charge of possession with intent to distribute.

Isom is also facing a charge of unlawful use of a weapon and has warrants out of Poplar Bluff, Butler County, and Wayne County.

Johnson is facing additional felony charges of felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance in a correctional facility.

MAN ACCUSED OF SETTING VEHICLE ON FIRE AND ASSAULTING WOMAN WITH A BAT

Authorities in Steele say that an area man has been arrested in connection to an alleged assault earlier this week.

Steele Chief of Police Billy Joe Stanfield tells KWOC News that on Tuesday officers responded to an area home where they found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames. The fire had also spread to the front of a house and a Steele officer safely extracted one person from inside the home.

Stanfield says it was determined the fire was deliberately set and the suspected arsonist also assaulted a woman by striking her with a baseball bat.

60 year old Elbert Parsons, of Steele, has been taken into custody on charges of arson 1st degree, assault 1st degree, and armed criminal action. His bond was set at $25,000 cash only.

ILLINOIS MAN DIES AFTER HITING DEER NEAR ELLINGTON

An Illinois man has died after he struck a deer with his vehicle in Reynolds County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 22 year old Austin King, of Smithton, Illinois, hit the deer on Missouri Highway 21 at around 11:40 am Wednesday.

After striking the animal, King’s vehicle travelled off the side of the roadway and struck a guard rail. He was later pronounced dead by Reynolds County Assistant Coroner Tom Stout.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG TRAFFICKING CHARGE

A Poplar Bluff man was taken into custody last night on a felony drug trafficking charge.

According to authorities, 43 year old Earnest Adams Jr. was arrested shortly before 9 pm Wednesday on felony charges of 2nd degree trafficking drugs for methamphetamine and driving while revoked.

Adams also reportedly had warrants out of Poplar Bluff and Kansas.

TWO ARRESTED FOR COCAINE AND METH IN BUTLER COUNTY

Two North Carolina residents are facing multiple felony drug charges out of Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 35 year old Gerardo Dominguez, of Conover, North Carolina, and 34 year old Triesa White, of Denver, North Carolina, were taken into custody Monday night, shortly before 11:30 pm.

Both were arrested on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance for cocaine, methamphetamine, and clonazepam.

Dominguez is also facing a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance in a county jail.

WRECK IN BUTLER COUNTY LEAVES ONE PERSON WITH SERIOUS INJURIES

A single vehicle wreck Wednesday has left an area man with serious injuries.

According to officials, the wreck occurred at around 3:30 pm on Butler County Road 465 in the Roxy area.

A vehicle driven by 62 year old Danny Parker, of Poplar Bluff, reportedly ran off the side of the road and struck an embankment.

Parker was seriously injured in the wreck and transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE ASKING FOR PUBLIC’S HELP IN LOCATING NON-COMPLIANT SEX OFFENDER

Authorities in Poplar Bluff are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a non-compliant sex offender.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, 37 year old Michael Owen, of Poplar Bluff, is listed on the Missouri State Highway Patrol Sex Offender website as a non-compliant sex offender.

Owen has reportedly moved from his registered address without reporting his new address to the Butler County Sheriff's Office.

HEAT ADVISORY TO BE IN EFFECT WEDNESDAY

Weather officials say that we are in for a hot 4th of July this year.

According to the National Weather Service, a Heat Advisory will be in effect from 11 am to 8 pm on Wednesday.

Temperatures are expected to rise above 90 by 11 am tomorrow and remain there through 7 pm. Temperatures are expected to peak out in the middle 90s during the afternoon. Combined with high humidity, this will produce heat index values in excess of 105 degrees for most locations in Southeast Missouri.

With more people being outside for holiday activities, there will be an increase in the potential for heat related stress or illness.

Travelers and residents remaining outdoors for prolonged periods need to be watchful for the very young, elderly, and those with medical conditions that could be susceptible to the heat and humidity.

MENTAL HEALTH AND SUICIDE PREVENTION SUMMIT TO BE HELD NEXT WEEK IN POPLAR BLUFF

The John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff will be holding a mental health and suicide prevention summit next week.

The summit is scheduled for 8 am to 4 pm on Wednesday, July 11th, at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center on the campus of Three Rivers College.

The program will highlight chronic pain, opioid use, and suicide prevention featuring QPR training for professionals and meditation for veterans.

TEENAGER ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO SIKESTON SHOOTING

A teenager has been arrested in connection to a weekend shooting in Sikeston.

Sergeant Jon Broom with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that shortly before 11 pm on Sunday officers responded to an area emergency room in reference to a 20 year old male that had been shot multiple times.

The victim told officers that the suspect was the ex-boyfriend to his current girlfriend.

Following an investigation, officers arrested 19 year old Malik Clark, of Sikeston. Clark has been charged with Assault 1st, with a cash only bond of $75,000.

Broom says that the victim is still in the hospital but it is believed he will recover from his wounds.

HIGHWAY PATROL PREPARING FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY TRAFFIC

With the Fourth of July coming up, troopers with the Missouri State Highway Patrol are preparing for an increase in travelers on Missouri’s roadways.

Officials tell KWOC News that the Highway Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. over the July Fourth holiday. All available officers will be patrolling Missouri’s roadways enforcing Missouri’s traffic laws in addition to being available to assist motorists.

Troopers will also be working on the state’s waterways to enforce Missouri’s boating laws and provide assistance where needed. Missouri’s boaters are being asked to do their part by remaining alert for other boats and swimmers, and being courteous on the water.

Boaters also should remember that it is illegal to discharge fireworks from a vessel.

MULTIPLE EVENTS PLANNED TO CELEBRATE 4TH OF JULY IN POPLAR BLUFF

There are multiple events planned for tomorrow in Poplar Bluff to celebrate Independence Day.

Line up for the parade will begin at 8 am, with the parade starting at 9 am.

The Black River Coliseum will be the host for the Little Miss and Mr. Firecracker 4th of July Pageant. Doors will open and registration will begin at 10 am.

There will be music, vendors, and food available from 5 to 9 pm at the Farmer’s Market pavilion located at 301 South 5th Street.

A fireworks display is scheduled to start at approximately 9 pm.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS UNDERWAY IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

Route U in Pemiscot County is being reduced with a 12-foot width restriction so contractor crews can perform pavement repairs. 

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of Route U being reduced is located from the I-155 interchange to the I-55 interchange.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 am to 5 pm daily, through Monday, July 16th.

NAME RELEASED OF HOMICIDE VICTIM IN STODDARD COUNTY

Updating a story we brought to you last week, authorities in Dexter have released the name of a victim in a homicide investigation. 

According to the Dexter Police Department, on Thursday the Stoddard County Major Case Squad was activated regarding a suspicious death in Dexter. 

Officials say that the deceased has been identified as 66 year old Jimmy Lynn Casey, of Dexter.

An autopsy was scheduled to be performed on Friday. Anyone who has information in connection to the investigation is asked to contact Captain Trout or Lieutenant Mills at the Dexter Police Department.

FIREWORKS SAFETY TIPS

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission has released some fireworks safety tips to help keep you and your family safe this Fourth of July. 

The CPSC advises parents to never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks and always have adult supervision when kids of any age are playing with fireworks, including sparklers. 

Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully and keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap. Also, never point or throw fireworks at another person. 

Poplar Bluff residents should remember that shooting fireworks inside the city is not permitted without a permit. A fireworks display will begin at approximately 9 pm on Wednesday. 

POPLAR BLUFF MAN TO BE SENTENCED IN OCTOBER ON GUN AND DRUG CHARGES

A Poplar Bluff man is scheduled to be sentenced in October after pleading guilty to meth and gun charges. 

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 36 year old Nicholas Kemp pled guilty on Friday to charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

In February of 2017, officers seized a nine millimeter pistol and 12 ounces of methamphetamine from Kemp after encountering him at a local motel during the course of an unrelated investigation into a stolen license plate.

Kemp faces a maximum punishment of 40 years of imprisonment and a fine up to $1,000,000 on the drug charges and a maximum sentence of life for possession of the firearm in furtherance of the drug trafficking crime.

His sentencing is set for October 2nd.

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO HEROIN ARREST IN KENNETT

Authorities in Kennett have arrested an area man on multiple drug related charges. 

According to the Kennett Police Department, officers located an undisclosed amount of heroin and synthetic marijuana along with narcotic related paraphernalia during a traffic stop last Thursday. 

Officers arrested 26 year old Raymond Pullum, of Kennett, for possession of drug paraphernalia and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

Pullum was held in the Dunklin County Justice Center pending the filing of formal charges by the Dunklin County Prosecutor’s office.

SIKESTON WOMAN FACING METH CHARGE OUT OF BUTLER COUNTY

A Sikeston woman was arrested over the weekend in Butler County on a felony meth charge. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 36 year old Angela Lewis was taken into custody Saturday afternoon on felony charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance – clonazepam, and possession of controlled substance –tramadol. 

Lewis is also facing a charge of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia. 

ROAD WORK SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TODAY ON ROUTE MM IN STODDARD AND DUNKLIN COUNTIES

Route MM in Stoddard and Dunklin Counties will be closed early this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs. 

The section of Route MM to be closed is located from Route U to Route J.

Weather permitting, work will take place today and tomorrow from 6 am to 6 pm, daily.

DUNKLIN COUNTY ROAD CLOSED FOR BRIDGE MAINTENANCE

A portion of Route A in Dunklin County has been closed so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform bridge maintenance. 

According to officials, work began this morning at 6 am and the bridge will re-open at noon on Tuesday.

The bridge is located between County Road 516 and Route T.

INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY FOLLOWING HOMICIDE IN STODDARD COUNTY

A homicide investigation is underway in Stoddard County.

Few details about the incident are available, other than it occurred on Mulberry Street in Dexter.

EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING TO GO INTO EFFECT THIS MORNING

Most of Southeast Missouri will be under an excessive heat warning beginning at 10 am.

According to the National Weather Service, high temperatures in the mid-90s with peak heat index readings above 110 are forecast for today.

Everyone is advised to take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

The heat warning will continue until 8 pm this evening and then become a heat advisory which will be in effect until 8 pm on Saturday.

FOUR ARRESTED ON HEROIN AND METHAMPHETAMINE CHARGES IN BUTLER COUNTY

Four people were taken into custody Thursday in Butler County on multiple drug related charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 52 year old Lanny Sanders, of Harviell, 56 year old Kimberly Steward, 37 year old Felicia Bunn, and 25 year old Chelcie McKnight, all of Poplar Bluff, were each arrested Thursday evening on charges of possession of heroin and possession of methamphetamine.

The four are also facing an additional charge of felony possession of a controlled substance for dangerous drugs.

FIREARMS AND LARGE AMOUNT OF METHAMPHETAMINE FOUND DURING SEARCH IN MARMADUKE

A man has been arrested after a large amount of methamphetamine and two firearms were found while authorities were executing a search warrant in Northeast Arkansas.

Greene County Sheriff David Carter tells KWOC News that early Wednesday morning, he and Greene County Deputies executed a Search Warrant in Marmaduke, shutting down an active drug selling operation.

During the search, deputies found over a quarter pound of crystal methamphetamine, two firearms, and drug paraphernalia.

Carter says that Daniel Judd was arrested and charged with possession of crystal methamphetamine with purpose to deliver, simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following their arrest, the four people were held at the Butler County Jail.

PILOT UNINJURED AFTER SMALL PLANE CRASHES IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A small plane crashed Thursday morning in Northeast Arkansas.

According to authorities, the incident occurred at the Pocahontas Municipal Airport at approximately 11 am.

The plane was attempting to land when it ran off the runway and overturned.

The pilot refused medical treatment.

US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS TO HOST INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION AND FIREWORKS THIS WEEKEND

The United States Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake will be hosting an Independence Day Celebration and fireworks display this weekend.

According to officials there will be various activities, including games, music, and concessions available beginning at 9 am Saturday and continuing throughout the day at Redman Creek Recreation Area.

The fireworks display will begin at dusk.

SENATOR MCCASKILL TO TOUR POPLAR BLUFF BUSINESS TODAY

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill will be in Poplar Bluff today to visit a local factory.

McCaskill will be touring Mid Continent Steel and Wire, which according to the company, reduced its workforce by over 10 percent on June 15th because of soaring costs and canceled sales resulting from tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on the wire that Mid Continent uses to produce nails.

60 jobs were cut and the company says it may have to cut 200 more in coming weeks, possibly shutting down completely shortly after.

HEAT WAVE STRIKES SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Area residents are reminded to stay cool during the heat wave that is hitting Southeast Missouri. 

According to a Special Weather Statement from the National Weather Service, high temperatures forecast around 90 degrees will combine with high humidity to yield peak heat index values from 100 to 105 across a large portion of the region this afternoon.

Even more oppressive heat and humidity are expected by Friday and into the weekend. A heat advisory will be in effect from 10 am on Friday to 8 pm Saturday. 

During the heat wave, use caution if you must be outside for any length of time. Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning and drink plenty of water to replenish lost fluids. 

Also remember to never leave a child or a pet in a hot vehicle, even for a short period of time. 

ENDANGERED SILVER ADVISORY CANCELLED FOR SIKESTON MAN

An Endangered Silver Advisory has been cancelled after a missing Sikeston man was found. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the advisory was issued after a 62 year old man with dementia was walking to his niece’s residence in Sikeston but never arrived. 

Officials say the alert was cancelled Wednesday afternoon after the man was located safe. 

CHARGES FILED IN CONNECTION TO ANIMAL ABUSE IN KENNETT

The Kennett Humane Department says that charges have been filed in connection to a case of animal abuse. 

According to the Humane Department, they were recently dispatched to a location in Kennett where they had been requested to check the well being of several dogs. 

One of the dogs had a wire wrapped tightly around his leg for a lengthy amount of time and his foot was extremely swollen due to the lack of circulation. 

The Humane Department says the case is open and charges have been filed. The name of the person charged was not released. 

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO DRUG ARRESTS IN KENNETT

A traffic stop led to the arrest of three people Tuesday evening in Kennett. 

According to the Kennett Police Department, officers conducted the traffic stop on US Highway 412 near the Kennett Country Club.

During the stop, officers reportedly located an undisclosed amount of prescription medications and marijuana.

23 year old Geno Smith, of Poplar Bluff, and 22 year old Roddre McKinney, of Kennett, were both arrested for possession of a controlled substance and held in the Dunklin County Justice Center.

Officials say that further charges of possession of a controlled substance inside a correctional facility will be filed against Smith as after arriving at the jail, staff located another bag of purported marijuana hidden on his person.

A third person was arrested during the traffic stop on an active Kennett Municipal warrant and later released. 

TWO SIKESTON MEN ARRESTED ON WARRANTS IN STODDARD COUNTY

Two Sikeston men have been taken into custody on warrants in Stoddard County. 

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 32 year old David Bowen was arrested on a warrant for burglary, property damage, and stealing.

33 year old Kevin Whitson was arrested on a warrant for forgery and assault with other charges pending. 

Officials say that both men remained in jail as of this morning.

SCOTT COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE WARNS OF SCAM

Officials with the Scott County Sheriff’s Office say that they have received several complaints about the Sheriff’s Office phone numbers being used for a phone scam.

The callers are stating that they have paper service for a pending lawsuit or you could pay them money to get it dropped.

Officials say that the Scott County Sheriff’s Office does paper service, but they will not request money or any other means of payment to drop the paper service.

STORM KNOCKS DOWN TREES AND HEAVILY DAMAGES BUILDING IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Thunderstorms crossed the area on Tuesday causing numerous trees to be knocked down as well as heavy damage to a structure in Stoddard County.

According to the National Weather Service, multiple counties reported trees being down including an incident near Harviell, in Butler County, where multiple trees were down, blocking highway 158. Power outages were also reported in multiple areas, including Wayne and Northern Stoddard County.

In Dexter, a concrete storage shed was also heavily damaged on North Park Lane.

Weather officials say that wind gusts of 58 miles per hour were reported at the Poplar Bluff Airport shortly before 7 pm.

GREENVILLE MAN DROWNS IN ST. FRANCIS RIVER

The identity has been released of a man found earlier this week in Wayne County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 49 year old Christopher Gallamore, of Greenville, was found deceased in the St. Francis River on Monday. His body was located downstream from the Highway 34 Bridge.

Officials say Gallamore had been swimming in the river prior to his body being found. The death is being considered a drowning.

NEW MADRID COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR CULVERT REPLACEMENT

A portion of Route 153 in New Madrid County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

Officials say that work is scheduled to take place from 8 am to 4 pm.

The work zone will be located between Route 62 and County Road 240.

NEW MISSOURI GOVERNOR MAKES STOPS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI COMMUNITIES

New Missouri Governor Mike Parson made multiple stops Wednesday in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Governor’s office, Parson had appearances in Farmington, Ironton, Sikeston, and Marston.

In Farmington, Parson met with volunteers from the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry and signed Missouri House Bill 1288 which extends the sunset for the Champion for Children Tax Credit and modifies provisions of a tax credit for donations to maternity homes.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE DRUG CHARGES

A Poplar Bluff man is facing multiple drug related charges after his arrest Tuesday morning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 35 year old Joshua Rohan was taken into custody shortly after 5:30 am Tuesday on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He is also reportedly facing a charge of possession of less than ten grams of marijuana.

Following the arrest, Rohan was held at the Butler County Jail. 

POPLAR BLUFF ATHLETIC DIRECTOR WARNS OF POSSIBLE FRAUD ATTEMPTS

Poplar Bluff Athletic Director Kent Keith is warning area businesses to be on the lookout for possible fraud attempts.

Keith tells KWOC News that the community is being inundated with fraudulent companies seeking advertising on the Athletic Department’s behalf.

Keith says that the Poplar Bluff Athletic Department does not use outside companies to solicit donations on their behalf. Only Keith, the coaching staff, or one of the student athletes will contact you if they are seeking donations for any athletic activity.

MULTI-WEEK ROAD PROJECT UNDERWAY IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

Route J in Pemiscot County is being reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction through mid-July as contractor crews perform pavement improvements.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of roadway being reduced is located from Route 84 to Route Z.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm daily through Friday, July 20th, including weekends as necessary.

DEAD BODY DISCOVERED IN WAYNE COUNTY

A dead body was found Monday in Wayne County.

According to authorities, the body of a man was discovered Monday afternoon in the St. Francis River in the Patterson area.

An investigation is underway and an autopsy is set to be conducted today. The identity of the man was not released.

FISK MAN FACING FELONY DRUG TRAFFICKING CHARGE OUT OF BUTLER COUNTY

A Fisk man has been taken into custody in Butler County on a felony drug trafficking charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 33 year old Michael Ryan was arrested Monday evening on a charge of felony drug trafficking - methamphetamine.

Ryan was also arrested on misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana – under 10 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, Ryan was held at the Butler County Jail.

WINONA MAN KILLED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK

Officials in Oregon County say that an area man was killed Sunday night in a single vehicle wreck.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 58 year old James Burmingham, of Winona, was driving on Missouri Highway 19 when his vehicle failed to negotiate a curve, ran off the side of the road, and overturned.

Burmingham was reportedly not wearing a safety device and was ejected during the wreck.

He was later pronounced dead by Oregon County Coroner Tom Clary.

MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN BUTLER COUNTY ON FELONY METH CHARGE

An area man is facing multiple felony charges following his arrest Monday night.

According to authorities, 54 year old Otto Starkey, of Silva, was taken into custody in Butler County on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and driving while intoxicated.

Starkey was transported to the Butler County Jail following the arrest.

STODDARD COUNTY AUTHORITIES ARREST DEXTER MAN ON FELONY WARRANT

Officials in Stoddard County say that a local resident is in custody on a felony warrant.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 38 year old James Harris the third, of Dexter, was recently arrested on a Stoddard County felony warrant for delivery of 35 grams or less of marijuana.

Harris’s bond has been set at $25,000 cash only and he remained in jail as of this morning.

PEMISCOT COUNTY ROAD CLOSED FOR CROSSING REPLACEMENT

A part of Route J in Pemiscot County has been closed so contractor crews can replace the railroad crossing.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the railroad crossing is located between east Lincoln Street and south 4th Street in Hayti.

Weather permitting; the road is scheduled to re-open on Monday, July 9th.

SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK IN CARTER COUNTY LEAVES ONE DEAD

An Ellsinore man has died from injuries he received in a wreck early Saturday morning.

According to authorities, 22 year old Bryan Parker was driving on US Highway 60 in Carter County when his vehicle travelled off the side of the roadway, struck a post, and then overturned in a ditch.

Parker was reportedly not wearing a safety device and was ejected during the wreck.

He was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

MINOR KILLED IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS WRECK

A minor has died following a wreck in Northeast Arkansas over the weekend.

According to the Arkansas State Police, the wreck occurred shortly after 1:30 am Saturday morning on Clay County Road 181 in the Corning area.

The vehicle involved failed to negotiate a curve and rolled over, ejecting the driver.

The minor driver, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene by Clay County Coroner Jarred Lowe.

ONE KILLED IN STODDARD COUNTY WRECK

A Bertrand man has died following a single vehicle wreck in Stoddard County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 45 year old Frank Best was driving on US Highway 60 Saturday night when his vehicle ran off the side of the road and struck an embankment.

Best was pronounced dead at the scene by Stoddard County Coroner Kenny Pope.

SIX TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON COCAINE CHARGE IN CARTER COUNTY

Six people were taken into custody over the weekend in Carter County on a cocaine charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the six people were all St. Louis residents and each arrested at 4:30 pm Saturday on a charge of possession of a controlled substance - cocaine.

The arrestees were transported to the Carter County Sheriff’s Office following the arrest.

WAYNE COUNTY ROAD SET TO BE CLOSED THROUGH WEDNESDAY

Route E in Wayne County will be closed as starting today so crews can overlay the road with asphalt.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the work zone will be located from Route 67 to Route C.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 am to 6 pm daily through Wednesday.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER MARIJUANA FOUND IN WAYNE COUNTY CAVE

Authorities in Wayne County say that an area man has been arrested after marijuana was found in a cave.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, the Sheriff's department, the SEMO Drug Task Force, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol recently executed a search warrant at Rebel cave in Silva.

Inside the cave, officers seized approximately one half of a pound of marijuana, processed and packaged for sale.

Officials say that Scott Peterson, of Patterson, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

Peterson was booked and released on a $25,000 bond.

THREE CHILDREN FOUND IN UNATTENDED VEHICLE, MOTHER ARRESTED

A Caruthersville woman has been taken into custody after her young children were found by themselves in a vehicle.

Officials with the Kennett Police Department tell KWOC News that shortly after 11 am on Thursday, officers were dispatched to an area business were they found a vehicle running in the parking lot with three children, ages 1, 4, and 7, inside, unattended.

The children’s mother had reportedly been inside the store for several minutes. Officials say that officers arrested 27 year old Diana Truss, of Caruthersville, for three counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child 1st Degree.

Truss was also arrested on two active state of Missouri warrants issued out of New Madrid County.

TWO ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGES IN BUTLER COUNTY

Two men were each arrested Friday evening in Butler County on a meth charge.

According to authorities, 31 year old Steven Counts, of Puxico, and 29 year old Darren Bishop, of Poplar Bluff, were each taken into custody shortly after 6 pm Friday on charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Counts is also reportedly facing a charge of possession of a controlled substance for hydrocodone.

Following their arrest, both men were held at the Butler County Jail.

LANDSPOUT TORNADO REPORTED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AS A PART OF THURSDAY’S STORMS

High winds were the primary hazard with the storm system that crossed Southeast Missouri on Thursday. 

According to the National Weather Service, there was also a "landspout" tornado in southeast Missouri. 

A "landspout" tornado refers to a tornado spawned by a non-supercell thunderstorm that usually occurs during the intense updraft stage of a developing shower or thunderstorm

According to storm reports, a tornado was reported by State Police touching down and lifting in the Canalou area of New Madrid County. A brief funnel cloud was also reported in the Scott City area. 

There were no reports of damage in Southeast Missouri among the National Weather Service’s storm reports. 

WRECK IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS RESULTS IN TWO DEATHS

Two people have died following a wreck last night in Northeast Arkansas. 

Officials with the Arkansas State Police tell KWOC News that the wreck occurred at around 9 pm on US Highway 412 in the Walnut Ridge area. 

A vehicle, driven by 37 year old Latosha Coker, of Cleveland, Ohio, had reportedly crossed the center line and struck another vehicle head on. 

Coker and a minor in her vehicle were killed in the wreck. The name of the minor was not released. 

Three additional minors in Coker’s vehicle, along with the driver of the second vehicle, were injured and transported to area hospitals. 

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ENTERS GUILTY PLEA ON GUN AND METH CHARGES

A Poplar Bluff man could be spending the rest of his life in prison after pleading guilty to gun and meth charges. 

Officials with the United States Attorney’s Office tell KWOC News that 37 year old Lee Marvin Hamilton has pled guilty to charges of distribution of 50 grams or more of methamphetamine, possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

Hamilton admitted that on December 13, 2017, he distributed 167 grams of methamphetamine to a confidential informant for the SEMO Drug Task Force. A search of Hamilton’s residence resulted in the seizure of an additional 376 grams of methamphetamine and a revolver.

He faces a maximum punishment of 40 years of imprisonment and a fine up to $1,000,000 on the drug charge and a maximum sentence of life for possession of the firearm in furtherance of the drug trafficking crime.

His sentencing is set for September 18th.

MALDEN WOMAN ARRESTED ON FELONY METHAMPHETAMINE CHARGE

Authorities say that an area woman has been taken into custody on a felony controlled substance charge. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 54 year old Melinda Hovis, of Malden, was arrested Thursday night on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine. 

Hovis is also reportedly facing a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. 

PAVEMENT IMPROVEMENTS ON ROUTE F IN PEMISCOT COUNTY TO BEGIN TODAY

Route F in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction beginning today so contractor crews can perform pavement improvements.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of roadway to be reduced is located from Route 164 to Route 61.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Friday, July 6 from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm daily, including weekends as necessary.   

SIKESTON AUTHORITIES WARNING BUSINESSES OF RECENT FRAUD ATTEMPTS

Officials in Sikeston say that two area chain businesses recently were the victims of fraud. 

Sergeant Jon Broom with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that the businesses were contacted by an unknown person claiming to be their company’s chief financial officer. This person requests the employee to purchase money gift cards and provide them with the numbers. 

After they supply the numbers to the person posing as the CFO they asked the employee to destroy the cards.

Broom says that businesses and community members should always be aware of possible fraudulent activities. If something seems strange or suspicious report it and never provide personal information or transfer money without verifying the source.

Here are some additional tips on how to avoid fraud:

•Know who you’re dealing with. Be especially wary if the entity is unfamiliar to you. Always call the number found on a website’s contact information to make sure the number legitimately belongs to the entity you are dealing with.

•Pay the safest way. Credit cards are the safest way to pay for online purchases because you can dispute the charges.

•Guard your personal information. Be especially suspicious if someone claiming to be from a company with whom you have an account asks for information that the business already has.

•Stay safe online. Don’t send sensitive information such as credit card numbers by email because it’s not secure.

•Be cautious about unsolicited emails. They are often fraudulent.

•Resist pressure. Legitimate companies and charities will be happy to give you time to make a decision.

•Don’t believe promises of easy money if something sound too good to be true it probably is.

•Fully understand the offer. A legitimate seller will give you all the details about the products or services, the total price, the delivery time, the refund and cancellation policies, and the terms of any warranty.

•Get off credit marketing lists. Credit bureaus compile marketing lists for pre-approved offers of credit. These mailings are a goldmine for identity thieves, who may steal them and apply for credit in your name. Get off these mailing lists by calling 888-567-8688 (your social security number will be required to verify your identity). Removing yourself from these lists does not hurt your chances of applying for or getting credit.

•Check your credit reports regularly. If you find accounts that don’t belong to you or other incorrect information, follow the instructions for disputing those items. You can ask for free copies of your credit reports in certain situations. If you were denied credit because of information in a credit report, you can ask the credit bureau that the report came from for a free copy of your file. And if you are the victim of identity theft, you can ask all three of the major credit bureaus for free copies of your reports. •Be cautious about offers for credit monitoring services. Why pay extra for them when you can get your credit reports for free or very cheap? Read the description of the services carefully. Unless you’re a victim of serious and ongoing identity theft, buying a
service that alerts you to certain activities in your credit files probably isn’t worthwhile, especially if it costs hundreds of dollars a year. ONE INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK IN WAYNE COUNTY

A Piedmont man has been taken to an area hospital following a single vehicle wreck. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 50 year old Raymond Mason was driving on Missouri Highway 49 in Wayne County, Wednesday evening, when his vehicle ran off the side of the road, overturned, and struck a tree. 

Mason suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was transported by ambulance to a Poplar Bluff hospital. 

MAN ARRESTED IN STODDARD COUNTY ON SODOMY WARRANT

Authorities in Stoddard County say a man has been taken into custody on a sodomy warrant.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 43 year old Micah Adrian Pettit, of Jefferson, was recently arrested on a warrant for statutory sodomy. 

Officials say that there was no bond set and Pettit remained in jail as of this morning.  

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO ARREST IN KENNETT

A Kennett man was arrested earlier this week following a traffic stop. 

Officials with the Kennett Police Department tell KWOC News that the stop occurred shortly after 11 pm Tuesday night. During the stop, a K-9 officer conducted a free air sniff around the vehicle and indicated a positive alert for the odor of narcotics. 

Officers conducted a search of the vehicle and located an undisclosed amount of methamphetamine and narcotic paraphernalia.

42 year old Don Amerson, of Kennett, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving while suspended.

MAN SENTENCED ON FIREARM CHARGE IN CONNECTION TO WAYNE COUNTY INCIDENT

A Licking, Missouri man has been sentenced in connection to the theft of a firearm in Wayne County. 

Officials with the United States Attorney’s Office tell KWOC News that 35 year old Randy Harris Jr., admitted at his plea in March that he had possession of a Hi-Point, 9 mm caliber rifle. 

The rifle was among five firearms stolen from a home in Wayne County in February 2017, when a group of persons entered the home and assaulted the owner. Officials say that Harris has a prior felony conviction for theft.

Harris has been sentenced to 54 months on one felony count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

WALMART IN CORNING TO CLOSE NEXT MONTH

The Walmart in Corning will be closing next month. 

It was announced on Wednesday that the store will be closing on Friday, July 20th. 

The pharmacy will also be closing on that date as well. 

POPLAR BLUFF TO HOST EVENT TODAY FOR INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY

An event has been scheduled for today in Poplar Bluff for International Yoga Day. 

According to the Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation Department, the event will be held at Hendrickson Park beginning at 6:30 pm this evening.

Route O in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction for over two weeks as contractor crews perform pavement improvements.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of roadway to be reduced is located from Interstate 55 to the end of state maintenance.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Friday, July 6 from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm daily.

ONE ARRESTED ON WEAPON CHARGE FOLLOWING INCIDENT IN KENNETT

A Kennett resident has been taken into custody in connection to an incident on Monday.

Officials with the Kennett Police Department tell KWOC News that at around 8:30 pm Monday night, officers were dispatched to an area residence in reference to a fight in progress with one party being armed with a firearm.

Following an investigation, officers arrested 40 year old Mickey Halford for domestic assault and unlawful use of a weapon.

Halford was held in the Dunklin County Justice Center pending the filing of formal charges by the Dunklin County Prosecutor’s office.

INCOMING POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS REMINDED TO GET MENINGITIS IMMUNIZATION

Poplar Bluff High School students who will be entering the 12th grade this fall are being reminded to get their meningitis immunization.

According to Poplar Bluff School Health Coordinator Sheryl Talkington, any student entering the 12th grade will be required to have the meningitis immunization series prior to school starting or upon enrollment.

Talkington says that two doses of MCV are required for all incoming 12th graders unless the first dose was administered to a student who was 16 years of age or older, in which case only one dose is required.

If your child has already received these vaccinations, you are asked to send a copy to the nurse's office as soon as possible.

ROAD CLOSURE TO BEGIN TODAY IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Route MM in Dunklin County will be closed both today and tomorrow as crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation perform pavement repairs.

According to officials, the work zone will be located from County Road 102 to Route J.   

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 am to 6 pm each day.

TWO ARRESTED ON METH CHARGES IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Two women were taken into custody earlier this week in Northeast Arkansas for meth.

According to Greene County Sheriff David Carter, deputies arrested Shena Reed and Charlie Smith late Monday night during traffic stops.

Carter says that Reed was arrested for possession of crystal methamphetamine, while Smith was arrested for possession of crystal methamphetamine with purpose to deliver.

MAGNITUDE 2.5 EARTHQUAKE RECORDED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

An earthquake rattled parts of Southeast Missouri Tuesday afternoon.

According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 2.5 quake was recorded at 2:09 pm Tuesday.

The earthquake was located around 4.7 miles southeast of Marston and had a depth of five miles.

DATE SET FOR BACK 2 SCHOOL CLOTHING DRIVE FOR RIPLEY COUNTY STUDENTS

A date has been announced for an upcoming clothing drive for some area students.

The Every Kid Counts Back 2 School Clothing Drive has been scheduled for 8:30 am to 12:30 pm on Saturday, August 4th, at the West Point UPC Gymnasium.

MISSOURI STATE SENATOR APPOINTED AS LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

Missouri Governor Mike Parson has appointed state Senate Majority Floor Leader Mike Kehoe to be the new Lieutenant Governor.

Kehoe is a businessman who has represented parts of central Missouri in the state Senate since 2011.

The Lieutenant Governor’s office has been vacant since June 1st, when Parson took the Governor’s office following the resignation of former Governor Eric Greitens. 

The move announced Monday carries some legal uncertainty because Missouri's constitution isn't clear on whether a governor has the authority to appoint a lieutenant governor. 

Historically, some governors have claimed the right to appoint a replacement. Lawmakers, though, have argued that the position must remain vacant until voters have a say because the two positions are elected separately.

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK BY A VEHICLE NEAR CHARLESTON

A pedestrian was injured Monday night after being hit by a vehicle in Mississippi County. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident began when a vehicle struck another vehicle on Route J, northeast of Charleston. The first vehicle then struck a 43 year old Charleston man who was on the roadway. 

The pedestrian suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital. 

THREE SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MEN INDICTED ON FIREARMS RELATED CHARGES

Three Southeast Missouri men have been taken into custody on firearms related charges. 

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 26 year old Jarvis Wofford, of Malden, along with 23 year old Wesley Williams and 22 year old Demontray Walker, of Charleston, were arrested this week on indictments charging them with making false statements in connection with the purchase of firearms as well as the subsequent illegal possession of the firearms.

Officials say the three men each face up to 10 years imprisonment on each weapons charge. 

In addition to the gun charges, the federal indictment against Wofford also alleges two instances of distribution of methamphetamine in 2014 and 2015 in Dunklin County.

Wofford faces up to 20 years imprisonment on each methamphetamine charge.

CORPS OF ENGINEERS TO HOST LIVE RAPTOR PROGRAM THIS WEEKEND

The US Army of Corps of Engineers will be hosting a free program this weekend to give children a chance to learn more about raptors. 

The program, “Day Shift, Night Shift, & Garbage Gal - Raptors Galore!” by the Dickerson Park Zoo, has been scheduled for 1:30 and 2:30 this Saturday afternoon at the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitor Center. 

Attendees will get the opportunity to see and learn about three raptors at the event. 

PIPE REPLACEMENT TO CAUSE CLOSURE OF PEMISCOT COUNTY ROAD

Route J in Pemiscot County will be closed today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace a pipe under the roadway. 

The section of roadway to be closed is located between Route C and County Road 423.

MoDot officials say that work will take place today from 6:30 am to 4:30 pm.

THREE WEEK ROAD PROJECT UNDERWAY IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

A three week road project is underway in Pemiscot County. 

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route EE in Pemiscot County is being reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction from Route 153 to Route A as contractor crews perform pavement improvements.

Weather permitting, work is scheduled to take place from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm daily through Friday, July 6th, including weekends as necessary.

SHOOTING INCIDENT IN PUXICO LEAVES ONE DEAD

An incident on Friday in the Puxico area has left one woman dead.

According to authorities, the 55 year old woman died after receiving a gunshot wound. The name of the woman was not released.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing and an autopsy has been scheduled for today.

INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY IN POPLAR BLUFF FIRE

A fire on Friday in Poplar Bluff is under investigation.

The fire began Friday morning at a building in the area of South 11th Street and Highway 53. The building contained multiple businesses and nobody was injured.

Officials with the State Fire Marshal were assisting with the investigation.

BICYCLIST SUFFERS MINOR INJURIES AFTER BEING STRUCK BY A DUNKLIN COUNTY DEPUTY

A Kennett bicyclist suffered minor injuries after he was struck by a vehicle Friday night.

According to the Dunklin County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was responding to a call when they struck a pedestrian on a bicycle near the intersection of the Kennett North By-Pass and County Road 413. The incident occurred at around 10:30 pm Friday night.

The person riding the bicycle complained of back pain but did not want to go to the hospital. The deputy insisted on medical attention and the subject was taken by ambulance to the Pemiscot County Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

ROAD WORK ON ROUTE 67 IN WAYNE COUNTY TO BEGIN TODAY

North and southbound Route 67 in Wayne and Madison Counties will be reduced with a 14-foot width restriction through late next month while contractor crews perform roadside work. 

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the work zone is located from Route 72 to Route 34.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Friday, July 27th from 6 am to 5 pm daily.

PARAGOULD MAN KILLED IN WRECK FRIDAY MORNING

A Paragould man was killed in a wreck Friday morning in Greene County.

According to the Paragould Police Department, at approximately 9:20 am Friday, officers responded to the area of Highway 49 South for a one-vehicle crash involving a pole.

Upon officers’ arrival, the single occupant of the vehicle was still in the driver’s seat with the vehicle still running and in drive. After multiple attempts to get the vehicle turned off and the driver assessed for injuries, officials say that the driver backed out of the accident scene and fled northbound on Highway 49 South.

The vehicle continued northbound, crossing over into southbound traffic and narrowly missing a southbound ambulance responding to the original crash report. The vehicle eventually struck a Paragould Fire Department rescue truck that was sitting stationary at a stop light.

According to the Arkansas State Police, the driver of the vehicle, identified as 26 year old Wesley Crossno, of Paragould, died from injuries he received in the wreck.

HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING

A heat advisory is in effect for most of Southeast Missouri through this evening.

According to the National Weather Service, heat index values this afternoon will peak in the 100 to 105 degree range.

The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will lead to an increased risk of heat related stress and illness.

If you have to work or spend time outside, remember to take precautions. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. Make sure your outdoor pets have plenty of shade and fresh water as well.

DEXTER TEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK

A Stoddard County teenager was seriously injured in a motorcycle wreck over the weekend.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the wreck occurred shortly before 3:30 pm Sunday on Route F at Aid.

A vehicle was making a left turn when it pulled into the path of a motorcycle that was driven by a 19 year old male from Dexter.

The teen suffered serious injuries in the incident and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

DUNKLIN COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS

Route B in Dunklin County will be closed beginning today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform pavement repairs.

MISSING POPLAR BLUFF MAN FOUND DEAD IN BLACK RIVER

Authorities in Butler County have found the body of a missing Poplar Bluff man.   

KWOC News spoke with Detective Joey Woodruff, with the Poplar Bluff Police Department, who says the investigation began on Monday evening.

DETECTIVE JOEY WOODRUFF:

On Monday evening, around 900 pm, 48 year old Shawn Burkett was reported as a missing person to the Poplar Bluff Police Department. Burkett’s scooter was located under the Vine Street Bridge on the east Side of Poplar Bluff near the levy of the Black River. Officers checked the scooter and found Burkett’s belongings. Officers began to walk the river bank in search of Burkett. Around 945 pm, the SEMO Search and Rescue team was deployed. Around 1am the search for Burkett was terminated until daylight hours. On Tuesday morning, the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Water Patrol Division began assisting with the search for Burkett and officers learned that Burkett was believed to have been fishing the day of his disappearance. On Wednesday morning, at 930 am, the Poplar Bluff Police Department was notified the body of Mr. Burkett had been located in Black River just southeast of South Riverview Road in Poplar Bluff. A preliminary check of Mr. Burkett revealed no signs to suggest foul play. 

Burkett was pronounced dead at the scene by Butler County Coroner Andy Moore.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON FELONY HEROIN AND PARAPHERNALIA CHARGES

A Poplar Bluff man was arrested Tuesday morning on a felony heroin charge in Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 43 year old William Barnett was taken into custody at around 8:30 am on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – heroin.

Barnett was also arrested on a felony charge of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and was taken to the Butler County Justice Center. 

POPLAR BLUFF RESIDENTS REMINDED TO PROTECT THEIR PETS DURING HOT SUMMER MONTHS

The Poplar Bluff Police Department is reminding area residents to take steps to protect their pets during the hot summer months.

Here are some tips on keeping your pets cool over the summer from the PBPD.

1. Never leave your pet in a parked car. Even with the window cracked, temperatures inside the car quickly rise to dangerous levels.

2. Pets can get dehydrated quickly, so give them plenty of fresh, clean water when it’s hot or humid outdoors. Make sure your pets have a shady place to get out of the sun, be careful not to over-exercise them, and keep them indoors when it’s extremely hot.

3. Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool—not all dogs are good swimmers. Introduce your pets to water gradually and make sure they wear flotation devices when on boats. Rinse your dog off after swimming to remove chlorine or salt from his fur, and try to keep your dog from drinking pool water, which contains chlorine and other chemicals.

DONIPHAN FOOTBALL TO HOST FISH FRY AND OPEN HOUSE LATER THIS MONTH

ONE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO A SHOOTING THAT LEAVES ONE DEAD AND SEVERAL INJURED

A man has been arrested in Butler County in connection to a shooting in Blytheville Arkansas, that left one dead and several others injured.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 52 year old Israel Rocha, was arrested on a felony homicide warrant around 5:45 pm on Tuesday.

Rocha is currently lodged in the Butler County Justice Center with no bond.

THREE INJURED, TWO SERIOUSLY, IN BUTLER COUNTY WRECK

A Corning Arkansas woman was seriously injured in a wreck Monday afternoon in Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 22 year old Kandra Leonard was driving on Missouri Highway 53, when she crossed the center liner and struck another vehicle head on.

Leonard suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was air lifted to a Memphis hospital. A passenger in her vehicle was also seriously injured and flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital. The driver of the second vehicle sustained only minor injuries.

OVER TWO MONTH ROAD PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route K in Stoddard County will be closed for over two months beginning today as contractor crews replace a bridge over Wolf Creek.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the bridge is located between north Route BB and south Route BB. 

Weather permitting; work will begin today with the road re-opening on Friday, August 31st.

HEAT AND HUMIDITY CONTINUES THIS WEEK TO SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Heat and humidity are expected over the next few days across Southeast Missouri.

We spoke with Rick Shanklin, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Paducah, about the heat and humidity.

RICK SHANKLIN:

Temperatures will continue to warm up as we head through the remainder of the week and into the weekend in fact high temperatures could be in the lower to mid-90s by Friday and into the weekend. And the high humidity values combined with those temperatures will push heat indices up to around 100 possibly even in excess of 100. So with that in mind it’s important to he’d some safety advice for the heat and that includes if you’re outside working taking frequent breaks preferably coming inside to air conditioning but at least going into a shaded area and allowing plenty of time to cool off. Stay hydrated that’s very important. Also very important is to never leave children or pets in a vehicle not even for just a few minutes we always say beat the heat check the backseat and also for your pets in sure they have plenty of shade and water outdoors.

Shanklin would go on to add that the heat and humidity will last through the upcoming weekend. 

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN ARRESTED ON FELONY METH CHARGE

A Southeast Missouri man was taken into custody this past weekend on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 26 year old Trenton Barnett, of Doniphan, was arrested shortly after 2 pm Sunday on a felony charge of possession of methamphetamine and a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, he was held at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.

ATHLETE PHYSICALS SCHEDULED FOR JULY IN POPLAR BLUFF

Poplar Bluff High School and Junior High student athletes can get a free physical done in July at the High School.

Physicals will be conducted beginning at 5:30 pm on Thursday July 26th for athletes in the 7th and 8th grades, beginning at 6:30 for 9th and 10th grades, and beginning at 7:30 for 11th and 12th grades.

First practice dates have also been set for Poplar Bluff High School and Junior High fall sports.

The first practice day for high school athletes is Monday, August 6th. Junior High athletes will follow a week later, on Monday, August 13th.
