Sgt. Jeff Johnson, MSHP DDCC tells KWOC News, “Dennis Overbey was one of the hardest working and most intelligent investigators I ever worked with. He had an uncanny ability to look at a case one time and be able to direct the investigation where it needed to be for a successful resolution. Dennis was a true friend and will be greatly missed. There’s not another one like him.”

He was born in Sikeston, MO and graduated from Sikeston High School in 1972 and later Southeast Missouri State University with a degree in law enforcement. He also worked for Shady Grove State School in Poplar Bluff as a Lead Driver/Bus Driver for special needs kids.

Our major case squad remains perfect with a 100% solve rate since I’ve been Sheriff because of people like Dennis Overbey. He was a mentor and a dear friend. I will never forget him and his contribution to law Enforcement. Our community owes a great debt of gratitude to an excellent investigator.”

Deer, turkey, quail and other species benefit when plants they depend on for food and cover are rejuvenated by the use of prescribed fire.

Each prescribed burn will be conducted when favorable atmospheric conditions exist.

Although some smoke may be visible and affect nearby communities, agencies will work closely with the National Weather Service and use smoke monitoring stations to predict potential smoke impacts.

MISSOURI STATEWIDE TORNADO DRILL TO BE HELD TODAY

State officials say that Missouri’s annual Statewide Tornado Drill is scheduled to be held at 10 am.

Multiple area communities including Carter County and Sikeston have confirmed they will be participating in the drill.

If a tornado is in your area, the best shelter is a basement or other underground location. If a basement is not available, move to an all interior small room, or other interior location such as a hallway. Stay away from outside walls, doors, and windows. Try to keep as many walls as you can between you and the wind outside.

Mobile homes should be abandoned in favor of a more substantial structure if you are threatened by a tornado.

If you are in a vehicle and have a clear path that you can drive in a direction away from the tornado, then do so. As a last resort, you can abandon your vehicle and hide in a nearby ditch or depression and cover your head. The best thing to do if severe weather threatens is to not drive. Stay in a safe building until the storms pass.
