KENNETT MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE CHARGES 

Authorities say that a Kennett man was arrested Monday on multiple charges.  

According to the Kennett Police Department, Monday afternoon officers received information that a subject with outstanding warrants was sitting inside a vehicle on Central Street. 

At the scene, officers located the man barricaded inside a van and armed with a shotgun.  

After speaking with officers, 26 year old James Payne was taken into custody without incident.  

Inside the vehicle, officers located an undisclosed amount of methamphetamine, prescription medication, ammunition, and the firearm.  

Payne was arrested for unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a controlled substance, and on a preexisting warrant issued out of Dunklin County.

RODEO TO HIGHLIGHT TONIGHT AT THE STODDARD COUNTY FAIR 

The Stoddard County Fair is continuing today with multiple events scheduled for tonight.  

Judging for sheep and goats will begin at 6 pm. At 7 pm, the rodeo will kick off at Arena A and Pastor Eric Lemons with Fusion Street Ministries will be the featured entertainment on the main stage.

CHILDREN’S FALL READING PROGRAM TO BEGIN NEXT WEEK AT POPLAR BLUFF MUNICIPAL LIBRARY 

The Poplar Bluff Municipal Library will be starting a reading program for children next week.  

The fall reading program, for children ages 3 to 17 years old will be held from September 24th through November 4th.  

Officials say that children can participate in a variety of reading activities to earn rewards during the program. Activities include, reading books for school or fun, being read to, listening to audio books, and helping friends and family.

STATE FIRE MARSHALL REQUESTED TO INVESTIGATE HOUSE FIRE IN POPLAR BLUFF 

An investigation is ongoing following a house fire in Poplar Bluff.  

Crews were dispatched to a home on Kendall Street Tuesday evening to respond to the fire, which had spread throughout the home. 

No injuries have been reported and authorities have requested the State Fire Marshall to investigate.

POPLAR BLUFF BEGINNING ADOPT A STREET PROGRAM 

Poplar Bluff area citizens and organizations are being given the opportunity to help keep the city clean.  

The Poplar Bluff City Council has passed an ordinance for the Adopt-a-Street Litter Control Program. The program allows citizens, organizations, and church or civic clubs to work with the City by adopting a segment of a roadway and agreeing to keep it clean.  

The city will provide trash bags for the cleanup events and pick up the full bags left along the route. A sign displaying the individual or organizations name will be installed after two consecutive pickups have been completed by the individual or organization.

POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS COLLECTING BOTTLE CAPS 

Poplar Bluff High School students are collecting bottle caps for a chance to win $10,000.  

Poplar Bluff Senior High is competing against schools throughout the region as a part of the Dr. Pepper Pigskin Points Contest. 

The maroon bottle caps on associated products imprinted with football helmets are being collected through December 14th, at the Mules Stadium, the PBHS front office, and near the cafeteria stage. 

The collections are being spearheaded by the PBHS Beta Club and National Honor Society to hopefully generate money for the student organizations. 

Students are also planning to participate in an accompanying barrel decorating contest for a chance to win $500.

91ST STODDARD COUNTY FAIR BEGINS TODAY

The 91st Stoddard County Fair is scheduled to begin today.

The fair will kick-off with the parade in downtown Dexter this evening at 5:30 pm. Youth games will also be held directly after the parade, for ages 12 and under.

PUXICO MAN SENTENCED TO OVER 18 YEARS IN PRISON ON CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGE

A Southeast Missouri man has been sentenced to over 18 years in prison on a child pornography charge.

Officials with the United States Attorney’s Office tell KWOC News that 28 year old James Davenport, of Puxico, pled guilty in June to a charge of receipt of child pornography.

Davenport admitted that he used a social media application to obtain numerous video files consisting of child pornography and then saved the material to his cloud storage account.

Davenport was sentenced yesterday to 220 months in federal prison. After serving his sentence, Davenport will be placed on lifetime supervised release and will be required to register as a sex offender.

LARGE AMOUNT OF METHAMPHETAMINE AND SYNTHETIC MARIJUANA FOUND AT KENNETT RESIDENCE

Authorities say that a large amount of drugs was found at a residence in Kennett last week.

According to the Kennett Police Department, last Thursday officers went to an area residence to follow up on a domestic violence incident.

At the scene, officers noted a strong odor of marijuana while speaking with the tenant at the door.

After receiving a search warrant, officers located a large amount of synthetic marijuana, a large amount of methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana, and two firearms inside the residence.

23 year old Taja Welton, of Kennett, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute, endangering the welfare of a child, and unlawful use of a weapon.

Officials say an investigation is ongoing and more arrests are expected.

ONE IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING STABBING

A Sikeston woman has been taken into custody in connection to an incident where a woman was allegedly stabbed over the weekend.

According to authorities, a physical altercation between two women on Saturday escalated when one of the women allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed the victim’s arm several times.

28 year old Jasmine Stevenson, of Sikeston, has been charged with assault 1st and armed criminal action. Her bond was set at $35,000 cash or surety.

The victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment and later released.

AREA CHURCH INSTALLS SOUND PANELS AT POPLAR BLUFF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

A Poplar Bluff Elementary School has new sound panels thanks to an area church.

Congregation members of Memorial Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff fabricated dozens of sound panels and installed them in the Eugene Field elementary school gymnasium over the summer in order to improve the experience during annual community events like Leadership Day.

Church members tailored the cloth for the boards, which were constructed in Worship Pastor Scott Cheshire's shop. A lift was rented to attach the 36 panels to special piping hanging from the ceiling.

SHOPLIFTING REPORT LEADS TO DRUG ARREST

A shoplifting report led to a drug arrest Sunday in Kennett.

According to the Kennett Police Department, on Sunday officers were dispatched to an area business in reference to a shoplifter. Upon their arrival, officers tried to stop the suspect who was attempting to leave in a vehicle, however the suspect initially failed to yield.

The vehicle came to a stop a short time later and 57 year old Jeremiah Bryant, of Kennett, was taken into custody without incident.

Officers located methamphetamine and prescription medication in the Bryant’s possession and he was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, stealing, resisting arrest, and numerous traffic violations.

STATE OFFICIALS SEEKING PUBLIC’S INPUT ON POSSIBLE REGULATION CHANGE AT WAPPAPELLO LAKE

State officials are asking for the public’s input about a possible regulation change concerning fishing at Wappapello Lake in Wayne County.

According to Missouri Department of Conservation, crappie are the most popular fish sought by anglers fishing the lake and under the existing regulation, anglers may harvest a daily limit of 30 white and black crappie combined with a minimum length of 9 inches.

Under the proposed regulation change, there will be no minimum length limit for crappie. The daily limit will remain at 30 crappie, but not more than 15 of those fish could be above 9 inches.

Officials say that the proposed regulation change would allow anglers to harvest more of the slow growing black crappie, while preventing overharvest of white crappie.

A public meeting will be held tonight to discuss the proposed change. The meeting is scheduled for 6 to 8 pm at the Greenville Elementary Gymnasium.

AREA WOMAN ARRESTED ON METH CHARGE IN BUTLER COUNTY 

An area woman has been taken into custody in Butler County on a felony drug charge.  

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 38 year old Mary Babcock, of Piedmont, was arrested Sunday on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.  

Babcock is also reportedly facing a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. Following the arrest, she was held at the Butler County Jail.

HEAT INDEX VALUES TO REACH THE MID 90’S THIS WEEK 

Heat index values are expected to reach the mid 90’s this week.  

According to the National Weather Service, high temperatures will reach the lower 90s across Southeast Missouri most of this week.  

Combined with the humidity, afternoon heat index values are expected to top out in the mid 90’s. 

Remember to be careful and take precautions if you have to be outside. Remember to ensure that your outdoor pets have plenty of water.

HUNTER EDUCATION COURSE SCHEDULED FOR THIS MONTH IN POPLAR BLUFF 

A Hunter Education Course has been scheduled for later this month in Poplar Bluff.  

The course will be held from 5 to 9 pm on Monday, September 24th, at the Poplar Bluff Junior High School Gym.  

Attendees must have completed the knowledge portion of the testing prior to the class. Students must also preregister online at mdc.mo.gov.

ROUTE AA IN STODDARD COUNTY TO BE REDUCED THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THIS WEEK 

Route AA in Stoddard County will continue to be reduced with an 11 foot width restriction through the middle of this week as contractor crews resurface the roadway.  

According to MoDOT, the work zone is located from Route 25 north to Route 25 south. 

Weather permitting, Route AA will be reduced from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm daily through this Wednesday.

OVER 100 CASES OF HEPATITIS A REPORTED BY BUTLER COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT 

Health officials are continuing to see an increase in reported Hepatitis A cases in Butler County. 

According to the Butler County Health Department, as of Friday, 102 cases of Hepatitis A have been reported with 55 percent of the cases requiring hospitalization.  

Officials say that the majority of cases have been in people who use drugs and/or their close personal contacts. 

Anyone who has been potentially exposed to an individual experiencing Hepatitis A signs or symptoms is asked to call or visit the Butler County Health Department.

POPLAR BLUFF CHEERLEADING KIDDIE CAMP SCHEDULED FOR NEXT MONTH

A Poplar Bluff Cheerleading Kiddie Camp for future cheerleaders ages 3 to 6th grade is set for next month.  

The camp is scheduled to be held at the Poplar Bluff High School Auxiliary gym on Tuesday, October 2nd from 5 to 6:30 pm, as well as 5 to 6 pm on October 3rd and 4th. Registration will begin at 5 pm on October 2nd. 

The cost is $25 per child and will include a T-shirt.

 

All Kiddie Camp Cheerleaders will then perform at either the Freshman or Junior Varsity football games on Monday, October 8th.

ARCHERY DEER SEASON TO GET UNDER WAY THIS WEEKEND IN MISSOURI

Missouri hunters will be out starting this weekend for the beginning of deer archery season.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, the season will run from September 15th through November 9th and then from November 21st through January 15th.

The hours will be from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.

OLD GREENVILLE DAYS TO BEGIN TODAY

The 27th Annual Old Greenville Days is set to begin today in Wayne County.

The event will be held at the Greenville Campground Day Use area from today through the 16th. There will be live music all weekend, along with craft and food vendors as well as games and activities.

The Wayne County Bicentennial Committee will also be on hand with historic displays, artifacts, and photos of Wayne County’s early days.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON FELONY FLEEING CHARGE

Authorities in Butler County arrested a Poplar Bluff man Thursday on a felony fleeing charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 27 year old Joseph Chaney was taken into custody yesterday afternoon on a felony charge of resisting arrest by fleeing as well as a felony probation violation.

Chaney also reportedly had a Butler County failure to appear warrant.

Following the arrest, he was held at the Butler County Jail.

MAN KILLED IN MOTORCYCLE WRECK INVOLVING A DEER

An Alton man was killed early this morning in a wreck involving a deer in Oregon County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 29 year old Marshall Williams was driving a motorcycle on Route AA when he struck a deer in the roadway and was ejected.

The wreck occurred shortly before 12:30 am.

Williams was reportedly not wearing a safety device and was later pronounced dead by Oregon County Coroner Tom Clary.

WISCONSIN MAN KILLED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI WRECK

A Wisconsin man has died from injuries he received in a single vehicle wreck Wednesday night in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 72 year old Ronald Leonard, of Cedarburg, Wisconsin, was driving on Interstate 57 when his vehicle ran off the side of the road and overturned.

Leonard, who was reportedly not wearing a safety device, was ejected from the vehicle and later pronounced dead at the scene.

FAFSA FRENZY EVENT SCHEDULED FOR NEXT MONTH AT THREE RIVERS COLLEGE

An event has been scheduled for next month to help students and their families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

FAFSA Frenzy will be held on October 18th from 4 to 6 pm at the Poplar Bluff campus of Three Rivers College.

Officials say the event is part of a statewide effort organized by the Missouri Department of Higher Education and is open to all high school seniors, current college students, and adults interested in attending college.

FIRE DESTROYS HOUSE IN POPLAR BLUFF 

A fire destroyed a home yesterday in Poplar Bluff.  

Crews responded to the scene of the fire Wednesday morning at a residence on Autumn Road.  

No one was injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

OZARK FOOTHILLS REGIONAL PLANNING COMMISSION TO HOST OPEN MEETING TODAY IN PIEDMONT 

The Ozark Foothills Regional Planning Commission has announced that they will be holding an open meeting today in Piedmont.  

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 pm at the Clearwater Lake in Piedmont Park, Pavilion #2.  

Some items on the tentative agenda include new grants submitted and received, solid waste management, as well as reports from Ripley County Public Housing and the Transportation Advisory Committee.

STODDARD COUNTY AMBULANCE DISTRICT STRIKE TEAM AIDING HURRICANE FLORENCE RELIEF EFFORTS 

Emergency workers from Stoddard County are on the east coast to aid in disaster relief efforts. 

The Stoddard County Ambulance District Strike Team was on the way to Fort Lee last night ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Florence.  

According to the Ambulance District’s Facebook page, the Strike Team will be aiding and assisting the local EMS services that are being overwhelmed with transports and evacuations during the hurricane.

DEXTER WOMAN ARRESTED ON STEALING CHARGE 

A Dexter woman has been taken into custody on multiple charges.  

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 35 year old Amy Malone was recently arrested on two counts of possession of a controlled substance as well as a charge of stealing. 

Her bond was set at $12,500 cash only and officials say she remained in custody as of this morning.

KENNETT HIGH SCHOOL HOMECOMING PARADE TO CAUSE TRAFFIC CHANGES ON FRIDAY 

The Kennett High School Homecoming Parade and Ceremony is set for Friday and officials are warning motorists that the event will cause some changes to traffic in the area. 

According to the Kennett Police Department, the parade scheduled to begin at the Kennett High School at 1:30pm. 

During the parade, all traffic on Saint Francis Street will be shut down from the Square to the West Y. The traffic ways around the Square will be shut down as well.  

Once the parade ends at the Square, Saint Francis Street will open for normal traffic flow, however, traffic on the east, north, and west sides of the Square will remain shut down until after the ceremony is over.  

Motorists are being asked to avoid these areas if possible on Friday if you are not planning on attending the parade or the ceremony.

TWO ARRESTED, TWO OTHERS SOUGHT, IN CONNECTION TO SIKESTON HOMICIDE 

Officials say that two men have been taken into custody and another two are still being sought in connection to a homicide last month in Sikeston. 

Sergeant Jon Broom with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that 18 year old Reginald Rush, of Sikeston, and 18 year old Donta Depree, of Cape Girardeau, were arrested last week as a part of an investigation into the shooting death of Marcus Price on August 23rd. 

Rush and Depree have each been charged with murder 1st, robbery 1st, armed criminal action, and resisting arrest. 

Broom says that arrest warrants has also been issued for 19 year old DeShauntay Craig and Tyce Cody, both of Sikeston, on the charges of murder 1st , armed criminal action, and robbery 1st.  

Both subjects are being considered armed and dangerous and if you have any information about their location, contact your local law enforcement agency.

POPLAR BLUFF PASTOR TO GIVE PRAYER THIS MORNING BEFORE THE OPEN OF THE MISSOURI HOUSE 

A Poplar Bluff pastor will be speaking today at the Missouri Legislature.  

Reverend Greg Kirk will be opening the Missouri House of Representatives with a prayer this morning.  

Kirk says that he was invited to give the prayer by Speaker of the House Todd Richardson.

PRESIDENTIAL RALLY IN CAPE GIRARDEAU CANCELLED DUE TO HURRICANE FLORENCE 

President Donald Trump’s Campaign has announced that the President’s rally scheduled for this week in Southeast Missouri has been cancelled.  

Michael Glassner, Chief Operating Officer of Donald J. Trump for President, Incorporated says that with Hurricane Florence on the way, they determined that the cancellation was the safest decision. 

The rally was going to be held Thursday night at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau.

SIXTH ANNUAL LIBERTY DAYS EVENT SCHEDULED FOR EARLY OCTOBER 

The Stars and Stripes Museum in Bloomfield is hosting it’s 6th annual Liberty Days event in early October.  

On Saturday, October 6th, there will be a parade in downtown Bloomfield, beginning at 9 am.  

Following the parade, guests will get to come to the Living History military event. There will also be a talent show at 1 pm, a blackpowder shoot throughout the day, weapons demonstrations, skirmishes, bluegrass music, and more.

DUNKLIN COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY AND TOMORROW FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS 

Route K in Dunklin County will be closed both today and tomorrow so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform pavement repairs. 

This section of Route K to be closed is located from Route 164 to the Arkansas state line. 

Work is scheduled to take place from 7 am to 4:30 pm both days.

Multiple agencies in Northeast Arkansas are looking for a missing three year old child in Randolph County.

According to authorities, a search is underway in the Reyno area for Jackson Hart, who has been missing since 7 pm last night.

Crews with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, and the Arkansas State Police, among others, are involved in the search.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE DEPARTMENT TO HOST FIRST ANNUAL FIRST RESPONDERS BALL

The Poplar Bluff Police Department is preparing for the first annual First Responders Ball this weekend.

KWOC News spoke with Poplar Bluff Deputy Chief Don Trout about the event.

“We’d like to invite everyone to come out to the Elks this Saturday September 15th for the first annual First Responders ball. This is first time we're trying one and we’d like to invite everyone to come out, buy your tickets, and support first responders.

The First Responders ball is an event to honor law enforcement, firefighters, and EMS personnel. This is kind of a formal event. Tickets are $25 each, will include a steak dinner and the extras to go along with it. Throughout the night, there will be several door prizes drawn. All the proceeds from this event will be donated back to the Elks Lodge.

In turn the Elks Lodge puts all the money back into the community through different scholarship programs, taking care of veterans, several different things the Elks do to put money back in the community. For ticket information you can contact the Elks Lodge at 785-9907.”

POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOLS GET NEW THERAPY DOG

Poplar Bluff School officials have recently added a third therapy dog to the school district.

Bailey, a 4-year-old professional therapy dog, joined the elementary school staff as a package deal with handler Holly Shupe, who was hired this school year as a resource teacher.

She plans to bring the dog around to classrooms on a weekly basis and allow students to read to him. According to Shupe's research, students experiencing behavioral or emotional difficulties have shown a dramatic increase in engagement when a therapy dog is present.

She also hopes to take the Great Dane to visit patients of the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center.

Poplar Bluff Schools has two other therapy dogs - Airial, a 9-year-old Labrador at Lake Road and Creggan, an 8-year-old Irish setter at the Junior High, as members of the counseling department.

ROUTE AA IN STODDARD COUNTY TO BE REDUCED THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK

Route AA in Stoddard County will be reduced with an 11 foot width restriction through the middle of next week as contractor crews resurface the roadway.

According to MoDOT, the work zone is located from Route 25 north to Route 25 south.

Weather permitting, Route AA will be reduced from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm daily through Wednesday, September 19th.

PAVEMENT REPAIR PROJECT UNDERWAY ON BUSINESS ROUTE 60 IN STODDARD COUNTY

Business Route 60 in Stoddard County is being reduced with a 12 foot width restriction so contractor crews can resurface the roadway.

The section of roadway affected by the resurfacing project is located from Route 25 to Arvin Road in Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 pm to 6 am daily through Tuesday, October 2nd.

MISSING TEENAGER IN DUNKLIN COUNTY FOUND 

Authorities in Southeast Missouri have located a teenager that was reported missing last week.  

Officials with the Dunklin County Sheriff’s Office said Friday morning that the missing 16 year old girl had been found.  

She had last been seen on September 5th in the Malden area. No other details about the incident were released.

WEEKEND EARTHQUAKE SHAKES SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A weekend earthquake rattled parts of Southeast Missouri.  

According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 2.7 quake was recorded at 6:10 pm on Saturday.

The earthquake was located around 5.6 miles south southwest of New Madrid and had a depth of almost six miles.

 

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE PROJECT SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK IN BUTLER COUNTY

A bridge maintenance project is scheduled to be conducted this week in Butler County.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Southbound Route 67 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane so crews can perform the maintenance.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday from 7 am to 4 pm. daily.

The bridge involved is located over the Black River between County Road 401 and Route JJ.

 

ONE DEAD, THREE INJURED IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS WRECK

A northeast Arkansas man has died from injuries he received in a wreck last week.

According to the Arkansas State Police, on Friday 42 year old Stacy Houston, of Sedgwick, was driving on Highway 63 when his vehicle hydroplaned and crossed over into oncoming traffic.

Houston’s vehicle struck a vehicle and was then hit by another vehicle. Officials say that Houston was killed in the wreck.

Three other people were injured and taken to an area hospital.

 

HUNTER EDUCATION COURSE SCHEDULED FOR THIS MONTH IN POPLAR BLUFF

A Hunter Education Course has been scheduled for later this month in Poplar Bluff.

The course will be held from 5 to 9 pm on Monday, September 24th, at the Poplar Bluff Junior High School Gym.

Attendees must have completed the knowledge portion of the testing prior to the class. Students must also preregister online at mdc.mo.gov.

 

PIPE REPLACEMENT TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Missouri Department of Transportation crews are in Dunklin County today.

Eastbound Route 412 in Dunklin County is being reduced to one lane so crews can replace a pipe beneath the roadway.

The work zone is located from Route U to Route NN.

Work is scheduled to take place today through 5 pm.

FIRE DESTROYS HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT BUILDING IN BUTLER COUNTY

Updating a story we brought to you yesterday, a fire has destroyed a Highway Department building in Butler County. 

Crews were on scene Wednesday night putting out the fire at a structure located on Highway 67, south of Poplar Bluff. 

The building, as well as several vehicles inside, was destroyed. 

The fire is under investigation. 


FORMER POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL PASSES AWAY

A former Poplar Bluff High School principal and interim superintendent has died. 

According to the Poplar Bluff School District, Tom Hoover passed away this week. 

Hoover was employed by the Poplar Bluff School District from 1965 to 1994 including serving as a basketball coach and teacher in addition to the previously mentioned roles. 

Hoover also served as official scorekeeper during basketball games all the way up until this past season

Poplar Bluff Athletics Director Kent Keith says that Sikeston school officials want to honor Hoover before the kickoff of the Mules football game tonight at Sikeston. There are also plans to honor Hoover at the next Mules Football home game on September 14th.  


PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP TO SPEAK IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI NEXT WEEK

United States President Donald Trump will be hosting a rally next week in Southeast Missouri. 

The rally is scheduled to begin at 7 pm on Thursday, September 13th at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau. Doors will open at 4 pm.

RUN 4 THE ARTS IN POPLAR BLUFF POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER

The incoming storm system has caused the delay of some local events.

REAGAN DAYS EVENT THIS WEEKEND TO HONOR TODD RICHARDSON

The annual Butler County Reagan Days event is scheduled for this weekend. 

The event, held by the Butler County GOP Committee, will honor Missouri Congressman Todd Richardson, the first Republican Speaker of the Missouri House of Representatives to come from Butler County.

The event will begin at 5:30 pm Saturday night at the Holiday Inn in Poplar Bluff. 


BUTLER COUNTY TO HOST PUBLIC HEARING THIS MONTH TO DISCUSS GRANT SUBMISSION

Butler County will be hosting a public hearing later this month to discuss an upcoming submission for a community development block grant. 

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 10 am on Monday, September 24th at the Butler County Courthouse Commission chambers. 

The county is proposing to apply for approximately $175,000 in CDBG Funding for multiple repairs to the infrastructure in Harviell.

DATE SET FOR 16TH ANNUAL CHILD ABUSE AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CONFERENCE

A date has been set for a conference in Poplar Bluff to discuss domestic violence.

According to the Butler County Community Resource Council, the 16th Annual Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Conference has been scheduled for Tuesday, October 30th.

The conference will be held from 8:30 am to 2 pm at First United Methodist Church.

 

27TH ANNUAL OLD GREENVILLE DAYS SCHEDULED FOR NEXT WEEKEND

Preparations are underway for the 27th Annual Old Greenville Days.

According to the US Army of Corps of Engineers, the Greenville Campground Day Use area will be the location for the event from September 14th through the 16th.

There will be live music all weekend, along with craft and food vendors as well as games and activities.

The Wayne County Bicentennial Committee will also be on hand with historic displays, artifacts, and photos of Wayne County’s early days.

 

HEAVY RAINFALL CHANCES WITH STORMS TODAY

An incoming storm system will bring with it chances of heavy rainfall today in Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorm chances will peak during the heat of the afternoon today, and locally heavy rainfall will be the primary hazard associated with any storm that develops.

The remnants of tropical storm Gordon will highlight the thunderstorm threat beginning Friday and continuing through the weekend.

Weather officials say that rainfall totals of two to three inches will be possible for much of Southeast Missouri, with higher amounts possible further to the north and west.

 

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE TO HOST MEET THE RAIDERS NIGHT NEXT WEEK

The Three Rivers College athletic season is fast approaching and area residents will have the opportunity next week to meet some of the players who will be representing the Raiders this year.

The college is hosting “Meet the Raiders Night” on Monday, September 10th, beginning at 6 pm. Admission is free, with a meal ticket costing $5 for non-students.

The event will showcase the players and coaches for the Raiders basketball and baseball teams, the Lady Raiders basketball and softball teams, the rodeo team, and the cheer team.

GATEWOOD MAN DIES FROM INJURIES HE RECEIVED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK

A Gatewood man has died from injuries he received in a single vehicle wreck Monday night. 

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 34 year old Dustin Reeves was driving on Missouri Highway 142 in the Couch area, when his vehicle ran off the side of the road and overturned.

PUXICO TEENAGER SERIOUSLY INJURED IN THREE VEHICLE WRECK

A Puxico teenager was seriously injured in a wreck involving three vehicles in Stoddard County. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred at around 9 pm Tuesday night on Highway 51 near Puxico. A vehicle was attempting to make a pass when it struck another vehicle in the rear, crossed the center line of the highway, and struck another vehicle head on. 

The driver of the third vehicle, 19 year old Blake Smith, suffered serious injuries and was flown to a St. Louis hospital. No injuries were listed for the drivers of the other two vehicles. 


VAN BUREN TO HOST PUBLIC HEARING NEXT WEEK TO DISCUSS GRANT SUBMISSION

The city of Van Buren will be hosting a public hearing next week to discuss the upcoming submission for a community development block grant. 

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 6 pm on Monday, September 10th at the Van Buren City Hall. 

The city is requesting funds for a new public safety building to be located on the same site as the current building, which was heavily impacted by flooding last year.

LARGE AMOUNT OF SYNTHETIC MARIJUANA FOUND DURING TRAFFIC STOP IN KENNETT

Authorities in Kennett say that a Charleston resident is facing a drug charge in connection to a traffic stop early Monday morning. 

According to the Kennett Police Department, at around 2:30 am Monday, an officer conducted a traffic stop during which they located a large amount of synthetic marijuana.

23 year old Andrae Rhodes was arrested for possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute. 

Officials say that Rhodes was held in the Dunklin County Justice Center. 


POPLAR BLUFF CITY OFFICIALS ANNOUNCE THAT ONLY ONE CITY COUNCIL MEETING WILL BE HELD THIS MONTH

Officials in Poplar Bluff have announced that only one city council meeting will be held this month. 

According to Poplar Bluff City Hall, the city council meeting is scheduled for 7 pm on Wednesday, September 12th. 

The meetings will return to the normal schedule of the first and third Mondays of the month in October. 


STODDARD COUNTY BRIDGE TO BE CLOSED THROUGH THE END OF NEXT MONTH

A Stoddard County bridge will be closed through the end of next month. 

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route N in Stoddard County will be closed so contractor crews can replace the bridge deck located between Route Y and County Road 512.

Weather permitting, the bridge is scheduled to re-open on Thursday, November 1st.

MAN FACING MULTIPLE CHARGES IN CONNECTION TO ACTIONS DURING ARREST ATTEMPT 

A Kennett man is facing multiple charges in connection to his actions during an arrest attempt on Sunday.  

According to the Kennett Police Department, on Sunday afternoon officers were dispatched to an area residence in reference to a wanted person. At the scene, officers made contact with the suspect who then became combative and assaultive toward his family members for calling the police on him. 

Officers took the suspect into custody and in the process of walking the suspect out of the residence; he lunged at and spit in the face of one of the family members.  

Once in the yard, the suspect again attempted to lunge at and get to one of the family members. He was taken to the ground where he again decided to become compliant. During the encounter, one officer sustained an injury to his arm; however no medical treatment was required at the time.  

25 year old Khadre Hollywood was arrested on the active Kennett Municipal warrant as well as for resisting arrest, failure to obey a lawful order, and assault for spitting on the family member.   

He was held in the Dunklin County Justice Center.

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK BY A VEHICLE NEAR PUXICO

A Puxico man has been transported to an area hospital after being hit by a vehicle on Labor Day.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a vehicle struck 50 year old Gary Rohan on Highway PP in Stoddard County shortly after 7 pm Monday evening.       

Rohan suffered serious injuries and was taken to a Cape Girardeau hospital. No injuries were listed for the driver of the vehicle.

 

CARTER COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY

A section of Route K in Carter County will be closed beginning today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform pavement repairs. 

The section of roadway to be closed is located from Route 21 to Route B.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday from 7 am to 4 pm daily.

MAN ALLEGEDLY THREATENS TO SHOOT POLICE OFFICER IN KENNETT

Authorities in Kennett say that a man has been taken into custody after he allegedly threatened to shoot a police officer.

Officials with the Kennett Police Department tell KWOC News that officers responded the scene for a motor vehicle accident Friday morning. At the scene, the officers made contact with one of the two drivers who refused to provide identification and did not have valid insurance.

Upon learning that his vehicle was going to be towed, the subject became irate and threatened to shoot the officer in the head.

The man also attempted to resist while being taken into custody.

 

SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE LEADS TO MAIJUANA BUST IN BUTLER COUNTY

Over seven pounds of marijuana were found in a package last week in Poplar Bluff.

Officials with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tell KWOC News that on Friday officers were alerted to a suspicious package coming through the Poplar Bluff Post Office.

Investigators detected the odor of Marijuana while inspecting the exterior of the package and obtained a search warrant to open the package upon it being claimed.

Officials say that investigators conducted surveillance, ultimately contacting 25 year old Keith Word, of Howardville, as he was receiving the package.

The package was found to contain approximately seven and a half pounds of high grade marijuana, with an approximate street value of $65,000.

Word was placed under arrest and later lodged at the Butler County Jail, pending the filing of formal charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

59 year old AJ Walker, of Kennett, was arrested for several charges including assault 4th degree, assault 3rd degree on a law enforcement officer, leaving the scene of an injury accident, and resisting arrest.

Following the arrest, he was held in the Dunklin County Justice Center.

 

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES AND WARRANTS IN BUTLER COUNTY

An area man has been taken into custody in Butler County on multiple felony charges and warrants.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 48 year old Jon Myers, of Poplar Bluff, was arrested Sunday night on felony charges of resisting arrest by fleeing and possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine.

Myers also reportedly had warrants out of Butler County for dangerous drugs and a warrant out of New Madrid County for statutory rape.

 

PAVEMENT REPAIRS TO FORCE CLOSURE OF DUNKLIN COUNTY ROAD

Route B in Dunklin County will be closed for part of this week so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform pavement repairs.

According to officials, the section of Route B to be closed is located from Route BB to Bailey Street in Campbell.    

Work is scheduled to take place from 8 am to 3 pm today through Thursday.

ARREST MADE IN CONNECTION TO FATAL SHOOTING IN SIKESTON

Officials in Sikeston say that an arrest has been made in connection to a fatal shooting that occurred last week. 

According to Assistant Chief James McMillen with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, during the early morning hours of August 23rd, officers received a call of a subject shot in front of a residence on Kendall Street. 

Officers responded and found 27 year old Marcus De’Andres Price, of Sikeston, unresponsive from an apparent gunshot wound to the torso. He was later pronounced dead by Scott County Coroner Scott Amick.

Yesterday, Sikeston detectives arrested 19 year old Shamar Lowe, of Cape Girardeau, on charges of murder 1st, armed criminal action, and resisting or interfering with a felony arrest. 

Lowe’s bond has been set at $200,000 cash only. 


POLICE IN CLAY COUNTY SEARCHING FOR MAN

A search is underway for a man in Northeast Arkansas. 

Officials with the Clay County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that they and the Corning Police Department are searching for a white male, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall, with dark hair. 

The man fled from police on foot and was seen wearing blue jeans and a white floral print shirt in the area of Wal-Mart and Arnold Addition in Corning.

Citizens are being urged not to approach the subject. 

If you see anyone wondering around the area acting strangely or if you have knowledge on the whereabouts of the suspect, you are asked to call the Clay County Sheriff’s Department at 870-598-2270. 


CITY OF HAYTI AWARDED OVER $20,000 FOR NEW POLICE VEHICLE

A southeast Missouri community will be getting over $20,000 to assist law enforcement efforts. 

According to United States Senator Claire McCaskill, the city of Hayti has been awarded $20,300 in federal funding for the purchase a new police vehicle. 

The funding was one of three grants across Missouri that was recently awarded, totaling over $57,000. 


MAN FACING CHARGE OUT OF STODDARD COUNTY ARRESTED IN KENTUCKY

A man facing a charge out of Stoddard County has been arrested in Western Kentucky. 

According to the McCracken County Sheriff’s Department, at around noon yesterday, the Stoddard County Prosecutor’s Office contacted them about locating 50 year old Warren Asher. 

Asher had been charged in Stoddard County with Domestic Assault 1st degree with a $20,000 cash bond and probation violation with no bond.

Asher was located at an area residence and reportedly attempted to flee. He was apprehended after a short foot pursuit. 

Officials say that Asher sustained minor injuries when he resisted arrest. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment before being lodged into the McCracken Regional Jail.


REDMAN AND ROCKWOOD BEACHES AT WAPPAPELLO LAKE TO REMAIN OPEN

Area residents will get extra time to play at two beaches at Wappapello Lake. 

Officials with the US Army Corps of Engineers tell KWOC News that both Redman and Rockwood beaches will remain open beyond their scheduled closure date of September 4th. 

A new closure date for the beaches has not been decided. 

People's Creek Beach will still remain open until October 1st.


HIGHWAY PATROL URGES SAFETY FOR LABOR DAY WEEKEND

Labor Day weekend is upon us and the Missouri State Highway Patrol is urging everyone to be safe during the holiday weekend.

The Highway Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. over the Labor Day holiday weekend. All available officers will be patrolling Missouri’s roadways, enforcing Missouri’s speed limit, seat belt, and impaired driving laws, in addition to being available to assist motorists. 

Last year, 11 people were killed and 265 injured in Missouri over the Labor Day holiday weekend in 941 traffic crashes. Also, 142 people were arrested by the Highway Patrol for driving while intoxicated.


DRIVERS ASKED TO USE CAUTION IN THE AREA OF THE 61 MILE YARD SALE

With Labor Day weekend every year comes the return of the 61 mile yard sale and the Missouri Department of Transportation is urging drivers to be cautious. 

Visitors and residents will be out in full force along Route 61 this weekend from Bloomsdale to Jackson for the yard sale. 

MoDOT officials say they will be doing their part to bring a safety message to the forefront. Message boards will be in place along the route to alert drivers of the unusual traffic patterns and promote safe driving.

VEHICLE BURSTS INTO FLAMES DURING PURSUIT INVOLVING POLICE 

A vehicle reportedly burst into flames during a pursuit involving police earlier this week. 

Officials with the Kennett Police Department tell KWOC News that officers were advised Tuesday night that a Dunklin County Deputy was in pursuit of a vehicle entering the city limits on Missouri Highway 84.  

Officers joined the pursuit and the suspect vehicle eventually exited the city limits and proceeded into Arkansas. During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle attempted to strike a patrol vehicle multiple times.  

Eventually the driver of the suspect vehicle lost control and struck a tree. The vehicle then immediately burst into flames. Officers were able to extract the driver, a passenger, and two dogs from the vehicle before they could be injured from the flames. 

The driver of the vehicle was air lifted to a medical facility in Memphis for injuries he sustained in the crash. The female passenger was transported by ambulance to the Hayti Hospital. 

Officers later learned that both the driver and passenger had several outstanding felony warrants for their arrest. A report was sent to the Dunklin County Prosecutor’s office for the filing of formal charges against the driver regarding the incident. The names of the two people were not released.

TEXAS MAN ARRESTED IN WAYNE COUNTY ON MULTIPLE WARRANTS

Authorities in Wayne County have arrested a Texas man on multiple warrants.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 33 year old George Pfaff, of Midland, Texas, was taken into custody yesterday evening on three Butler County warrants for failure to appear and one Wayne County failure to appear warrant.

Following the arrest, Pfaff was held at the Wayne County Jail.

 

POPLAR BLUFF SHO-ME BAND TO HOST ALUMNI NIGHT NEXT MONTH

The Poplar Bluff Sho-Me band will be hosting an Alumni night for past band members before an upcoming football game.

Past band members will get to perform during the pregame ceremony before the Mules take on Ritenour on Friday, September 14th.

Check in will be at Poplar Bluff High School at 3:30 pm, followed by a rehearsal in advance of the 6:30 pm on-field performance.

MAN WANTED ON CHILD MOLESTATION CHARGE ARRESTED IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

Updating a story we brought to you yesterday, a Lilbourn man wanted on a child molestation charge has been taken into custody.

Officials with the New Madrid Police Department tell KWOC News that Gerald Davis was arrested yesterday evening without incident in Lilbourn.

Davis has been charged with one felony count of sodomy or attempted sodomy in the first degree and one felony count of child molestation in the second degree.

 

KENNETT MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGE

A Kennett man has reportedly been arrested on a drug charge.

According to authorities, on Tuesday morning officers in Kennett were dispatched to a residence to assist the Division of Children’s Services in an investigation.

During the investigation, officers located an undisclosed amount of methamphetamine and narcotic related paraphernalia. 30 year old Eldon Osborn was taken into custody for possession of a controlled substance as well as an active warrant out of Butler County.

Following the arrest, Osborn was held in the Dunklin County Justice Center.   

 

CARTER COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY

A section of Route K in Carter County will be closed today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway to be closed is located from Route 21 to Route B.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 7 am to 4 pm.

 

GRANT AWARDED FOR ROOF OF RODGERS THEATER

A grant has been approved to assist in the restoration of a popular Poplar Bluff landmark.

According to the Greater Poplar Bluff Area Chamber of Commerce, the Department of Economic Development has awarded the Rodgers Theatre a grant for $336,900 to replace the roof.

The theatre is still required to provide a $45,400 match for the project.

PARAGOULD HIGH SCHOOL CLEANED AFTER STUDENT CONFIRMED TO HAVE HEPATITIS A

A Northeast Arkansas school is being cleaned after a student was confirmed to have Hepatitis A. 

The Paragould School District announced Tuesday that officials have received notification of a confirmed case of Hepatitis A involving a student at Paragould High School.

The Paragould School District announced Tuesday that officials have received notification of a confirmed case of Hepatitis A involving a student at Paragould High School.

School officials say that the district was taking immediate action last night by cleaning and sanitizing inside of the high school. 

The School District will also be working with the Arkansas Department of Health to ensure that all necessary precautions are taken to protect students and staff.


MAN TO BE SENTENCED IN OCTOBER FOLLOWING DOUBLE MURDER CONVICTION

A jury has returned a verdict in a 2016 Kennett double murder case. 

According to Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley, William “Josh” Carter was convicted yesterday of two counts of murder in the first degree. 

Hawley says that in June 2016, Carter intentionally struck his estranged wife, Heather Carter, and her friend Aaron Campbell with his SUV, killing them. The dispute began after an argument when the defendant struck Mrs. Carter’s SUV with his SUV and drove off. 

He then returned and struck both victims. 

Carter’s sentencing is scheduled for October 4th. 


MAN WANTED ON CHILD MOLESTATION CHARGE OUT OF NEW MADRID

Authorities in New Madrid are asking for the public’s assistance in finding a man charged with child molestation. 

Officials with the New Madrid Police Department tell KWOC News that Gerald Davis, of Lilbourn, has an active felony warrant through New Madrid County and is charged with one felony count of sodomy or attempted sodomy in the first degree and one felony count of child molestation in the second degree.

Anyone who has information on Davis’s whereabouts is asked to contact the New Madrid Police Department at 573-748-5901.

RACCOONS CAUSE LOSS OF POWER FOR MANY RESIDENTS IN POPLAR BLUFF

Many Poplar Bluff residents were without power early Tuesday morning due to raccoons.

According to city officials, crews with Municipal Utilities were out at around 1 am Tuesday morning working to restore power to about half of Poplar Bluff. 

The outage was due to raccoons that had gotten into a city substation. 


POPLAR BLUFF CUB SCOUT SIGN UPS SCHEDULED FOR THURSDAY

Children in Poplar Bluff who want to sign up for the Cub Scouts will have an opportunity to do so this Thursday. 

Cub Scouts signups for both girls and boys in Kindergarten through 5th grade will be held beginning at 6 pm tomorrow. 

The sign up event will be located at the Poplar Bluff Junior High School. 


BUTLER COUNTY FAIR SCHEDULED TO BEGIN ON SEPTEMBER 26TH

We are less than one month away from the beginning of the 2018 Butler County Fair. 

The fair will be held this year from September 26th through September 29th. 

Events scheduled for the fair this year include weenie dog races, tractor pulls, the international miniature rodeo, a demolition derby, and a concert by the John D. Hale Band. 

There will also by the Lil Mister and Miss Butler County Fair Pageant.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING KIDNAPPING OF YOUNG CHILD 

Authorities in Poplar Bluff have arrested an area man in connection to the alleged kidnapping of a young child.  

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, on Sunday evening an officer was dispatched to a location on Kinzer Street. At the scene a woman told the officer that her two year old son was playing in the front yard of her residence when 37 year old Jeffrey Moore pulled up and kidnapped him. 

Moore was later located with the child at a location in Poplar Bluff and placed under arrest. He was transported to the Butler County Jail on a charge of kidnapping 1st degree.  

Police say that this is the third time Moore has taken the child. Moore, who is not the father, has reportedly cared for the child since birth.

CAMPBELL POLICE DEPARTMENT PHONE LINES ARE DOWN

The phones at a Southeast Missouri Police Department were reportedly not working yesterday.

According to a post on the Campbell Police Department Facebook page, the phone lines at the police department went down on Monday.

There have been no updates on if phone service has returned.

OPEN HOUSE TO BE HELD TODAY FOR POPLAR BLUFF EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER

Parents of young children in Poplar Bluff will get the opportunity to tour the Poplar Bluff Early Childhood Center today.

The Open House for students in the morning session is scheduled for 8:30 to 9:45 am this morning. For students in the afternoon session, the Open House will be held from 10 to 11:15 am.

The first day for students at the Poplar Bluff Early Childhood Center is Wednesday.

 

MAN FACING CHARGES FOLLOWING ALLEGED INCIDENT IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A man has been taken into custody on multiple charges following an alleged incident over the weekend in Northeast Arkansas.

According to authorities, Emilio Estavon Williams allegedly ran his ex-girlfriend off a road in the Paragould area multiple times and forced her into his vehicle.

He was later found by officers and arrested on charges of aggravated assault and false imprisonment.

 

DATE SET FOR 17TH ANNUAL 4-PERSON BENEFIT GOLF SCRAMBLE IN DEXTER

A date has been set for the 17th Annual 4-Person Benefit Golf Scramble in Dexter.

The event, held by Bootheel Counseling Services, is scheduled to begin at 1 pm on September 21st at Hidden Trails Country Club.

The cost is $65 per person and will include food, beverages on the course, t-shirts and door prizes. Golf carts will also be available for $30 each and must be requested by September 14th.

FREDERICKTOWN MAN CLAIMS $50,000 POWERBALL PRIZE

A Southeast Missouri man has become a big winner from playing Powerball.

Officials with the Missouri Lottery tell KWOC News that Andrew Clark, of Fredericktown, matched four white-ball numbers and the Powerball number for the drawing held on August 11th.

Officials say that Clark’s ticket won him $50,000.

WANTED FUGITIVE ARRESTED IN POPLAR BLUFF

A wanted fugitive has been apprehended in Poplar Bluff. 

Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whiteley tells KWOC News that 23 year old Carlos Pawnell Jr., formerly of Poplar Bluff, was arrested without incident Friday morning by members of the Poplar Bluff Police Department, the U.S. Marshal’s Service, and the Department of Homeland Security. 

WANTED FUGITIVE ARRESTED IN POPLAR BLUFF

POCAHONTAS MAN KILLED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK

Authorities in Northeast Arkansas say that a Pocahontas man has died from injuries he received in a single vehicle wreck. 

According to the Arkansas State Police, 56 year old Charles Burtman was travelling south on Highway 9 in Izard County when he failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the roadway. 

Burtman travelled over an embankment and then came to rest on a nearby road. 

Officials say that the wreck occurred at around 12:30 pm Friday afternoon. 


INVESTIGATION ONGOING AFTER PERSON REPORTED BEING HELD HOSTAGE

Authorities in Kennett are investigating a reported incident where an area resident was held hostage. 

According to the Kennett Police Department, in the early morning hours of August 22nd, officers were dispatched to a residence on East Fourth Street. 

At the scene, officers learned that the two victims were awakened by four suspects being inside their residence, armed with a firearm, and demanding money.

Two of the suspects stayed with one victim who had been tied to a bed while the other victim was taken against his will to a residence in Hayti where he was eventually released. 

Several items including currency, cell phones, and electronics were stolen from the victims during the incident. 

Officials say that an investigation is ongoing and no suspects have been identified at this time. 


HEAT INDEX VALUES TO REACH AROUND 100 DEGREES TODAY

Heat index values are expected to reach around 100 degrees early this week. 

According to a Special Weather Statement issued by the National Weather Service, high temperatures will reach the lower 90s across Southeast Missouri both today and tomorrow. 

Combined with the humidity, afternoon heat index values are expected to top out near or just above 100 degrees both days.

Remember to be careful and take precautions if you have to be outside. Remember to ensure that your outdoor pets have plenty of water.


WAPPAPELLO MAN ARRESTED OVER THE WEEKEND ON METH CHARGE

A Wappapello man is facing a felony drug charge following his arrest over the weekend. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 22 year old Kenneth Smith was taken into custody Sunday morning on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine. 

Smith is also facing charges of possession of marijuana and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia. 

Following the arrest, he was held at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office. 


TWO TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN BUTLER COUNTY ON WARRANTS AND DRUG CHARGES

Two Poplar Bluff residents were arrested Friday night in Butler County. 

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 43 year old Cheryl Cooper and 32 year old Zachary Wangler were each arrested at around 9:45 pm Friday on a charge of felony possession of a controlled substance. 

Both Cooper and Wangler also reportedly each had a warrant out of Butler County for failure to appear. 

Following their arrest they were both held in the Butler County Jail.  


POPLAR BLUFF POLICE DEPARTMENT POSTS THEIR ENTRY IN THE LIP SYNC CHALLENGE

Officials in Poplar Bluff have put forth their entry into the Lip Sync Challenge. 

Multiple law enforcement agencies across the country have posted videos online featuring officers and staff lip syncing to music as a part of the challenge. 

The Poplar Bluff Police Department is one of the latest agencies to join in on the fun. On Saturday, the Police Department posted the over three and a half minute video featuring dispatchers and police officers lip syncing to “Party Up” by DMX, “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne, “Wannabe” by the Spice Girls, “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus, and “We are the Champions” by Queen

ROUTE O IN CARTER AND RIPLEY COUNTIES TO BE CLOSED THIS WEEK

Route O in Carter and Ripley Counties will be closed for part of this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs. 

The section of roadway involved is located from Route 21 in Carter County to Route 21 in Ripley County.          

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday from 7 am to 4 pm, daily and the road will be open to local traffic only.

POPLAR BLUFF MULES TO KICK OFF REGULAR SEASON TONIGHT AGAINST SUMNER

The Poplar Bluff Mules Football team is looking to repeat their perfect regular season from last year and will start their journey tonight. 

The Mules will host the Sumner High School Bulldogs, with kickoff set for 7pm. It will be the first game for each team this season.

Elsewhere in Southeast Missouri tonight, Doniphan High School will be beginning their first season of football at the Varsity level in almost 40 years. The Dons will be hosting the Cabool Bulldogs. On the Dons team will be senior receiver and cornerback Katlyn Harris, the only the female player on the varsity roster. 


INVESTIGATION CONTINUES INTO SIKESTON HOMICIDE

Authorities in Sikeston are continuing to investigate a homicide in the city. 

Assistant Chief James McMillen with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that early Thursday morning officers received a call of a subject shot in front of a residence on Kendall Street. 

Officers responded and found a Sikeston man, later identified as 27 year old Marcus De’Andres Price, unresponsive from an apparent gunshot wound to the torso.

Price was later pronounced dead by Scott County Coroner Scott Amick. 

The victim was reported to have exited his home at around 12:20 am Thursday morning. Shortly after exiting, two subjects approached him on foot and gunfire erupted. The two suspects then fled the scene.

21ST ANNUAL BUTLER COUNTY JOB FAIR SET FOR TODAY

Today is the day for the 21st annual Butler County Job Fair. 

According to the Butler County Community Resource Council, the job fair will be held from 10 am to 3 today at the Bess Activity Center on the campus of Three Rivers College.

MULTIPLE AREA LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES TO PARTICIPATE IN STATEWIDE DWI ENFORCEMENT DAY

Multiple Southeast Missouri law enforcement agencies will be participating in a statewide DWI enforcement campaign this weekend. 

Saturation Saturday is a high visibility evening where police departments step up their DWI enforcement efforts to remind their communities that they are out in full force looking for impaired drivers. 

The initiative will occur this Saturday in conjunction with the Labor Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign which runs through September 4th.

The Dexter, Kennett, Malden, Hayti, and Cape Girardeau Police Departments have announced that they will be participating in the campaign this weekend.


AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING BURGLARY AT SOUTHEAST MISSOURI BUSINESS

Authorities in a Southeast Missouri community are investigating a reported burglary. 

According to the Steele Police Department, on Monday police were dispatched to the 515 Pit Stop Convenience Store where they learned that the business had been burglarized and merchandise was stolen. 

The Steele Police Department and Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Department have been investigating the burglary and are asking anyone who has information about the crime to call 573-695-2100. 


PAVEMENT REPAIR PROJECT SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TODAY

A pavement repair project is scheduled to begin today in Stoddard County. 

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Business 60 in Stoddard County will be reduced with a 12 foot width restriction so contractor crews can perform the repairs. 

The section of roadway to be reduced is located from the south Outer Road 60 to Two Mile Road in Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Friday, September 14th from 8 am to 6 pm daily.

TWO ARRESTED IN POPLAR BLUFF DRUG BUST 

Two men have been taken into custody following a large drug bust this week in the Poplar Bluff area.  

Lieutenant Josh Stewart with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that on Tuesday, officers executed a search warrant at the residence of 49 year old Jeffery Resnik, just outside of the Poplar Bluff city limits. 

At the scene, investigators located two separate Marijuana grow operations, a psilocybin mushroom grow operation, various quantities of processed marijuana, assorted drug paraphernalia, and approximately 116 grams of “ICE” methamphetamine. 

Officers also located a quantity of counterfeit US currency, along with counterfeit Missouri ID’s and what appeared to be a credit card cloning operation. 

Resnik was arrested and held in the Butler County Justice Center. He is facing charges of manufacturing marijuana, manufacturing hallucinogens, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of hallucinogens, and possession of drug paraphernalia. 

A second person present at the time of the warrant, 24 year old Alx Govoni, of Poplar Bluff, was also arrested and is facing charges of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. 

Stewart says that the investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are expected.

TWO ARRESTED IN POPLAR BLUFF DRUG BUST

Two men have been taken into custody following a large drug bust this week in the Poplar Bluff area.

Lieutenant Josh Stewart with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that on Tuesday, officers executed a search warrant at the residence of 49 year old Jeffery Resnik, just outside of the Poplar Bluff city limits.

ARKANSAS DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SCHEDULES TWO ADDITIONAL CLINICS TO VACCINATE PEOPLE AGAINST HEPATITIS A

Health officials in Arkansas have announced that two additional Hepatitis A vaccine clinics have been scheduled for Greene County.

According to the Arkansas Department of Health,   vaccines will be available at the Paragould Community Center from 7:30 am to 5 pm today and 7:30 am to 5:30 pm on August 30th.

The vaccine will be provided to the public at no cost, however people should bring their insurance card and driver’s license if they have one. If someone does not have insurance, or if their insurance does not cover the vaccine or charges a copay, officials say the vaccine will still be provided at no cost to the patient.

 

ANNUAL MISSOURI RICE FIELD DAY SET FOR TODAY

The Annual Missouri Rice Field day event is set to be held today.

The event, by the Missouri Rice Council, is scheduled for 8 am to noon at the Rice Research Farm on Highway J, west of Malden. Research personnel and other experts will be on hand to provide area farmers a chance to see and learn about recent developments in rice research and other agriculture related topics.

A free lunch will also be provided at noon.

 

MISSING POPLAR BLUFF CHILD RETURNED TO MOTHER

A missing Poplar Bluff child has been returned to her mother.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, on Wednesday, officers received a report of a missing two year old child and her grandfather, 48 year old Steven Herrmann, of Poplar Bluff.

The mother told police the child had gone with Herrmann to St. Louis on Sunday. The last time the mother spoke with Herrmann was Tuesday evening when he was enroute back to Poplar Bluff, but he had not arrived by Wednesday morning.

Herrmann’s vehicle was located by a relative in an alleyway in St. Louis. The relative was approached by Herrmann, however after demanding to see the child, Herrmann ran from the area leaving the child locked in the vehicle.

St. Louis Police Department Officers arrived on scene and were able to safely remove the child from the vehicle without further incident.

The child was evaluated by medical staff and is currently back in the custody of her Mother.

Officials did not say if any further contact has been made with Herrmann.

 

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING SHOOTING IN SIKESTON

One person has died following an early morning shooting.

According to authorities, the victim was found dead this morning at a residence on Kendall Street in Sikeston.

An investigation into the shooting is underway and the identity of the victim was not available.

 

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI SHERIFF ASKS PUBLIC TO REPORT SIGHTINGS OF SUSPICIOUS PEOPLE

A sheriff in Southeast Missouri is asking the public to report any sightings they have of suspicious people.

Carter County Sheriff Richard Stephens tells KWOC News that there have been multiple reports around the region over the past few days of possible attempted abductions and suspicious persons hanging around parks, schools and business structures.

Stephens says that if you observe suspicious activity, feel you are being followed, or observe suspicious markings on vehicles contact your local law enforcement agency.

 

BUTLER COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY

A portion of Route N in Butler County will be closed today so Missouri Department of Transpiration crews can perform fly coating.

According to MoDOT, the section of roadway to be closed is located from County Road 214 to Route 51.

Work is scheduled to be performed from 9 am to 4 pm.

THREE IN CUSTODY IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI ON METH DISTRIBUTION CHARGE 

Three men are facing a distribution charge after authorities discovered approximately 40 pounds of crystal methamphetamine inside the spare tire of a vehicle.  

According to authorities, Carlos Uleces Rodriges Gamboa, Carlos Oswaldo Morales Marescal, and Dario Angel Andrejol Real were all arrested following a traffic stop earlier this month in Dunklin County that lead to the discovery.  

Officials say the meth had a street value of around $320,000.  

The three men are each facing one count of distribution of methamphetamine.

EMERGENCY MAINTENANCE FORCES CLOSURE OF POPLAR BLUFF MUNICIPAL LIBRARY ON TUESDAY

The Poplar Bluff Municipal Library was closed early Tuesday due to emergency maintenance.

The maintenance forced the closure and cancellation of all classes and events yesterday at the Library.

The Library will be open for normal hours today.

 

DEXTER MAN ARRESTED ON CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE AND PARAPHERNALIA WARRANT

Authorities in Stoddard County say that a Dexter man is in custody on a controlled substance warrant.

Officials with the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tell KWOC News that 36 year old Jimmy Buck Jr. was recently arrested on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Buck’s bond was set at $15,000 cash only and officials say he remained in jail as of this morning.

 

TWO TORNADOS CONFIRMED TO HAVE OCCURRED IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS ON MONDAY

Two tornados have been confirmed to have occurred during the storm system that crossed Northeast Arkansas on Monday.

According to the Memphis office of the National Weather Service, an EF-1 tornado was recorded at 5:27 pm, west of Paragould. The tornado had a path length of 2.4 miles, a width of 120 yards, and max winds reaching 85 to 90 miles per hour.

A weaker EF-0 tornado followed at 5:51 pm. This tornado was located east of Marmaduke and had a length of only seven-tenths of a mile. The second tornado’s width was recorded at 50 yards with max winds of 65 to 70 miles per hour.

 

HARVIELL MAN FACING FELONY LEAVING THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT CHARGE

A Harviell man is facing a felony charge following his arrest Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 51 year old James Kreyling was arrested on a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident. Further details about the accident were not available.

Officials say that Kreyling was also arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated.

Following the arrest, he was held in the Butler County Jail.

 

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO METH ARREST IN KENNETT

Two people have been taken into custody on a drug charge in Kennett.

According to the Kennett Police Department, on Monday night officers located an undisclosed amount of methamphetamine and narcotic related paraphernalia during a traffic stop.

Officials say that 57 year old Gregory Allen and 31 year old Rosemary Decker, both of Kennett, were arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance.

They were each held in the Dunklin County Justice Center pending the filing of formal charges by the Dunklin County Prosecutor’s office.
