MOTORCYCLE RIDER KILLED IN GREENE COUNTY WRECK  

A motorcycle rider from Paragould has died from a wreck in Greene County.

According to the Arkansas State Police, the motorcycle of 52 year old Randy Allen Gates ran off a county road and struck a tree Saturday afternoon.

Gates was killed in the wreck.

 

MISSING MAN FOUND DEAD IN REYNOLDS COUNTY The body of a missing Lesterville man has been found.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the vehicle of 49 year old John Gutches was swept off a bridge early Wednesday morning into Black River in Reynolds County.

Gutches reportedly drowned after escaping the vehicle. A search for Gutches began after the vehicle was discovered Wednesday morning. His body was then found on Friday.

 

MISSING CHILDREN FOUND SAFE, FATHER IN CUSTODY Updating a story we brought to you on Friday, two children who were reported missing last week in Sikeston have been found safe.

Captain James McMillen with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that the kids’ father, Eugene Phillips, was found Friday morning in Miner.

Phillips, who reportedly has no parental rights, picked up his two children after they got off a school bus on Russell Street Thursday afternoon.

Phillips was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant. He told police that he had just dropped the kids off at the mother’s home. Police were able to make contact with the children and confirmed that they were safe.

The incident is under investigation to determine if any charges will be sought.

 

BLOOMFIELD MAN FACING METH CHARGE Authorities in Stoddard County arrested a Bloomfield man Friday evening on a felony meth charge.

According to the Highway Patrol, 54 year old Michael Dodson is facing felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

Dodson is also charged with possession of a controlled substance – marijuana and driving while revoked.

 

PUXICO MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG RELATED CHARGES A Puxico man is facing multiple drug related charges in connection to his arrest over the weekend.

According to authorities, 28 year old Stephen Donner was arrested Saturday night on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance in a correctional facility.

Donner is also charged with possession of under 35 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

 

NEW AWARD TO RECOGNIZE ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF THREE RIVERS COLLEGE GRADUATES The nomination period has now opened for a new award designed to recognize the accomplishments and achievements of Three Rivers College’s graduates and former students.

The Distinguished Alumni Award will be handed out at a recognition banquet hosted by the college in the spring.

Nominations can be submitted online at trcc.edu/distinguished. A committee drawn from College employees, members of the Three Rivers Board of Trustees and the Three Rivers Endowment Trust, will choose the winning nomination.

The deadline for nominations is January 15th.

SEARCH UNDERWAY FOR MISSING MAN IN REYNOLDS COUNTY  

Authorities in Reynolds County are searching for a man who has been missing since he was involved in an accident earlier this week.

According to authorities, the search for 49 year old John Gutches, of Lesterville, began after his truck was found early Wednesday morning in Black River near the intersection of Highway 49 and Route J.

There was nobody inside the truck when it was found. Multiple agencies are involved in the search including the Reynolds County Sheriff’s Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

 

SIKESTON POLICE SEARCHING FOR TWO BROTHERS WERE KIDNAPPED BY THEIR FATHER

 

Authorities in Sikeston are investigating a kidnapping.

Captain James McMillen with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that 38 year old Clarence “Eugene” Phillips picked up his two children, 8 year old Alexander Phillips and 6 year old Logan Phillips, after they got off a school bus on Russell Street Thursday afternoon.

Phillips has no parental rights and took the children in a Silver Dodge Ram extended cab pickup truck. McMillen says that it was reported that the father was with another unknown subject who was driving the vehicle and it is unknown where he may be taking the children.

Phillips is also wanted through Scott County Court for failure to appear on a traffic offense.

Anyone who has information about the whereabouts of the children is asked to immediately contact Sikeston DPS at 573-471-4711.

 

ONE KILLED IN TWO VEHICLE WRECK IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

 

A Paragould man is dead following a two vehicle wreck in Greene County.

According to the Arkansas State Police, the wreck occurred when a vehicle failed to yield to a turning vehicle and the two vehicles collided.

The driver of the turning vehicle, 42 year old Jeffery Wimberly, was fatally injured in the wreck.

 

TWO POPLAR BLUFF RESIDENTS ARRESTED IN WAYNE COUNTY ON METH CHARGE

 

Two Poplar Bluff residents are facing drug charges in connection to their arrest Thursday afternoon in Wayne County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 46 year old Dennis Gowen and 24 year old Tiffany Carter were taken into custody Thursday afternoon on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Gowen was also charged with felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver for marijuana.

The Highway Patrol is reporting that Carter also had warrants for possession of marijuana and larceny.

 

WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN HEAD ON COLLISION

 

A Fairdealing woman was injured Thursday morning in a head on collision near Harviell.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 62 year old Deborah Crawford was riding in a vehicle on Highway 158 when the vehicle hydroplaned, crossed the center line, and struck another vehicle head on.

Crawford was taken to a Cape Girardeau hospital with serious injuries. There were no one else injured in the wreck.

 

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE TO HOLD MASS CASUALTY TRAINING EVENT

 

Three Rivers College will hold its bi-annual mass casualty training event next Tuesday.

The event will be held at the college’s Poplar Bluff campus. The training helps prepare students in participating programs for a mass casualty emergency such as a natural disaster or terrorist attack and tests the college’s emergency response plans.

Students from several fields of study will participate in the training, including three classes of nursing students, EMT students, and Paramedic students. The training will also receive support from regional medical centers, local ambulance services, law enforcement agencies, and fire departments.

In keeping with the training’s focus on realism, the students themselves will coordinate much of the event, with students serving in leadership and command/control positions.

The college is also keeping the type of “disaster” under wraps, so that students have no chance to prepare beforehand.

PIEDMONT MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGE  

A Piedmont man is facing multiple drug charges following his arrest Wednesday night in Wayne County.

According to the Highway Patrol, 50 year old Tony Hughes was arrested on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Hughes is also facing charges of possession of up to 35 grams of marijuana and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

 

DRUGS DISCOVERED AFTER MAN FOUND SLUMPED OVER IN VEHICLE IN POPLAR BLUFF

 

A Poplar Bluff man is facing charges after authorities found drugs in his vehicle.

Deputy Chief Jeff Rolland with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that an officer found 31 year old Jessie Legrand slumped over in the driver’s seat of a vehicle last week. Legrand was unresponsive but breathing.

Emergency medical services arrived at the scene and rendered aid to Legrand. He regained consciousness and refused any further medical treatment.

While inventorying the vehicle, the officer found a zip lock bag with suspected marijuana along with a plastic bag containing a white powdery substance.

Legrand was taken into custody on charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

 

MINER MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER IN CONNECTION TO TWO DEATHS

 

Continuing to follow a story we brought to you yesterday, charges have been filed after two people were found dead in the Mississippi River.

According to authorities, 37 year old Thomas McRoy, of Miner, is facing two counts of 1st degree murder and armed criminal action.

The charges stem from the deaths of McRoy’s parents, 64 year old Roxann McRoy and 62 year old Larry McRoy, whose bodies were found in the river near Dorena earlier this week.

 

DEXTER MAN IN CUSTODY ON DRUG WARRANT Authorities in Stoddard County say a Dexter man is in custody on a drug warrant.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 28 year old Brian Koechner was recently arrested on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance and attempted escape from custody.

Koechner’s bond was set at $50,000 cash only.

 

POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN BRIDGE BUILDING COMPETITION TODAY The Poplar Bluff High School AP physics class will be participating today in a bridge building competition.

The Missouri Department of Transportation will test bridges entered into its 12th Annual Bridge Building Competition today in Cape Girardeau.

Students were supplied 15 pieces of balsa wood, a bottle of glue and some string, then given four weeks to create a bridge design of their choosing between 16-20 inches long and 2-9 inches wide, with the ability to hold at least 7 pounds. The projects will be judged based on structural efficiency.

Prizes donated by area businesses and organizations will be awarded to the top-five bridge building winners, as well as for the most aesthetic bridge and the electronic bridge building contest.

 

HUNDREDS OF GUESTS ATTEND COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING DINNER AT POPLAR BLUFF STUDENT ACTIVITY CENTER Several hundred guests attended the Community Thanksgiving Dinner held last week in Poplar Bluff.

The November 10th event at the Student Activity Center was provided free of charge by Chartwells School Dining Services in partnership with the Poplar Bluff R-I School District.

Several school representatives assisted with the event including The Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, the Senior High Studio Jazz Band, and the Student Council.

In addition, students collected nearly $200 for the Bread Shed and Haven House.

HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY IN SCOTT COUNTY  

Authorities in Scott County say one person is in custody in connection to a homicide investigation.

According to authorities, a man’s body was discovered Tuesday in the Mississippi River in Dorena. A suspect has been taken into custody and authorities are still searching for a missing woman in connection to the investigation.

Additional details about the incident were not released.

 

TODD RICHARDSON HONORS POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR

 

Missouri House of Representatives Speaker Todd Richardson was at the Poplar Bluff High School last week to recognize a local student.

Richardson read a House proclamation that honored Senior student Grace Hudson for advocating for victims of sexual assault and giving a “voice to this critical societal problem.”

Hudson established Students Against Sexual Assault to raise awareness and protect teens from sexual assault, and domestic and dating violence.

The club has participation from around 70 members.

 

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE TO HOST FREE TRACTOR OPERATION AND GUIDANCE CLASS

 

Anyone wanting to learn how to operate a tractor will have the opportunity with a free class at Three Rivers College in New Madrid.

The Continuing Education department at Three Rivers College will hold Tractor Operation and Guidance classes from 8 am to 4 pm on Saturdays, from November 28th through December 12th.

FLOODING CLOSES ROADS IN RIPLEY AND WAYNE COUNTY

 

Multiple roads have been closed due to flooding caused by the rainfall Southeast Missouri has received over the last few days.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, sections of Routes K and NN in Ripley County were closed last night because of flooding.

Officials also closed sections of Routes C, E, and F in Wayne County due to water being over the roadway.

POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS DONATE DIAPERS AND BABY WIPES TO CHILD CONCERN CENTER

 

The Poplar Bluff Middle School Junior Beta Club recently held a diaper drive for the Child Concern Center of Poplar Bluff.

The club collected diapers and baby wipes over a two week period and donated them, along with cash, to the nonprofit, which provides low-income families clothing, diapers, food, utilities and other emergency items.

This is the second year that the Junior Beta Club has held a diaper drive.

 

EIGHT MULES FOOTBALL PLAYERS NAMED TO ALL REGION TEAM

 

Eight Poplar Bluff Mules football players have been named to the All-Region teams.

Quarterback Tristen Francisco, Defensive Lineman Jacob Dunlap,

Linebacker Steven Haley, and Defensive Back Denzel Britton were all named to the 1st team all-region.

Francisco and Haley were also respectively named offensive and defensive MVPs for the region.

Wide Receivers Ross Rushin and Jerrid Moore, Defensive Lineman Andrew Miller, and Center Zack Thomas were chosen for 2nd team all-region.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN IN CUSTODY ON MULTIPLE CHARGES INCLUDING KIDNAPPING AND FORCIBLE RAPE  

Poplar Bluff authorities say a man is in custody in connection to the kidnapping of an adult female.

We spoke with Deputy Chief Jeff Rolland with the Poplar Bluff Police Department about the incident:

The suspect has been identified as 44 year old Doyle Turner, of Poplar Bluff. In addition to the previously mentioned charges, officials are also seeking additional charges including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and forcible sodomy.

 

MAN IN CUSTODY ON BURGLARY CHARGE IN POPLAR BLUFF

 

A Poplar Bluff man is facing a burglary charge after he was found overnight at an area business.

According to Poplar Bluff Police, an officer was dispatched to the business early Saturday morning and was informed that the suspect was found inside the business.

The suspect, 29 year old Paul Berry, told the officer that a friend told him he could sleep there. The officer observed that a door frame was broken and a shoe print was on the door. The tread pattern matched a shoe that Berry was wearing.

Berry was then taken into custody on charges of 2nd degree burglary and 1st degree property damage.

Police also say that $80 was reported missing from the business and multiple objects inside the building were damaged.

 

STORM SYSTEMS COULD LEAVE SIX INCHES OF RAIN

 

The National Weather Service says that some areas of Southeast Missouri could get 5 to 6 inches of rain before the current storm systems moving through the area are done.

The NWS says that we are looking at a round of heavier rain this morning, followed by a relative break this afternoon.

Another round of heavy rain is forecast to slowly move across our listening area tonight. Most of Southeast Missouri is in a flash flood watch until noon on Wednesday.

Residents are reminded that flooding of small streams and creeks is likely during the rainfall. You may also see some flooding in low lands, poor drainage areas, and roads that typically experience the effects of minor flooding.

Any motorist that encounters a flooded highway should turn around and seek higher ground.

 

OVER 100 GRAMS OF MARIJUANA FOUND DURING POPLAR BLUFF TRAFFIC STOP

 

Officials recovered over 100 grams of marijuana during a traffic stop Friday night in Poplar Bluff.

Sergeant Darron Moore with the Poplar Bluff Police Department has more:

Moore says that the marijuana weighed 105 grams in its packaging and Turner is facing a charge of distribution of marijuana.

 

2.3 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE RECORDED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

 

Officials with the United States Geological Survey say a 2.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded Monday morning in Southeast Missouri.

The earthquake occurred at 8:51 am and was located 7 miles south of New Madrid. The quake’s depth was reported to be just over 5 miles.

 

CLOSE TO 100 THOUSAND DEER HARVESTED DURING OPENING WEEKEND OF DEER SEASON

 

Hunters harvested almost 100,000 deer during the opening weekend of deer season.

According to officials with the Missouri Department of Conservation, preliminary data shows that hunters harvested 97,171 deer over the weekend.

This marks an increase of just under 6,000 deer from last year’s number. Of the 97,171 deer harvested, 53,359 were antlered bucks, 10,320 were button bucks, and 33,492 were does.

Texas County led all Missouri Counties with 2,184 deer checked.

SHOOTING SUSPECT NOW FACING 2ND DEGREE MURDER CHARGES  

Continuing to follow a story we brought you first, a Poplar Bluff man is now facing murder charges in the shooting death of his former brother-in-law.

According to authorities, the shooting occurred back on October 24, in the parking lot of Poplar Bluff’s Regional Medical Center Behavioral Health Unit.  The victim 52 year-old Mitchell Dugger, of Broseley, was shot multiple times, transferred to a Cape Girardeau hospital, and later died on October 27.

58 year-old Edward Skorcz, of Poplar Bluff, is charged with 2nd Degree Murder, and has since been released posing bond.  Skorcz is due back in court this morning at 8 AM.

 

HIS PLACE FELLOWSHIP IN DONIPHAN TO HOLD CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR

 

His Place Fellowship in Doniphan will be hosting their first annual Christmas Craft Fair in early December.

There will be multiple types of crafts at the fair, including ceramics, textiles, quilting, jewelry, ornaments, and more. In addition the crafts, there will also be door prizes, an auction, and games for kids.

MULTIPLE AREAS ON ROUTE 67 IN BUTLER COUNTY TO BE REDUCED BEGINNING TODAY

 

Multiple areas of North and Southbound Route 67 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane with a 16-ft. width restriction beginning today so contractor crews can perform bridge guardrail and guard cable maintenance.

The work zones are located from Route PP to Route M and from County Road 401 to Route JJ.

Work is scheduled to be performed from 6 am to 7 pm daily through Saturday, December 5th.

 

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN ARRESTED ON SEVERAL DRUG CHARGES

 

A Poplar Bluff woman is facing several drug charges following her arrest, Saturday afternoon in Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 30 year old Crystal Weaver was arrested, shortly before noon, on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Weaver is also being charged with possession of a controlled substance inside a correctional facility and possession of marijuana.

 

POSSIBLE HEAVY RAINS MOVES INTO THE AREA TONIGHT THUR TUESDAY NIGHT

 

The National Weather Service is warning Southeast Missouri residents to be aware of a storm system coming into the area today.

KWOC News spoke with Sean Polous, Meteorologist from the National Weather Service in Paducah about the forecast:

Polous also says after this event, we should see a few dry days, before a weaker storm system moves back into the area for the upcoming weekend.

 

TWIN RIVERS PROJECT GRADUATION TO HOST PANCAKE BREAKFAST

 

The Princess and Pirate Pancake Breakfast has been scheduled for 9 am to 11 am on Saturday, December 5th at the Elks Lodge in Poplar Bluff.

Tickets are available for $20 in advance and a ticket will include breakfast, games, activities, and a free picture. One parent will get in free per child ticket and children are encouraged to come dressed as a princess or pirate. Tickets will also be available at the door for $25.

4TH ANNUAL SANTA RUN SCHEDULED FOR DECEMBER 5TH

 

The 4th Annual Santa Run will be held on December 5th in Ellsinore.

The 5k will start at 10 am, with the 1 mile walk/run beginning at 10:30 am and a 100m Reindeer Dash will follow at 11 am.

All proceeds to benefit the Brodie Gargac Memorial Ball Field. Brodie Gargac was diagnosed with Lymphoma in 2008 and later with Leukemia. The nine year old had his wish granted by the Make a Wish Foundation to have a ball field like the pros in his hometown of Ellsinore.

ESCAPEE TURNS HIMSELF IN  

A man who escaped from an Illinois prison in camp is back in custody.

According to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, 30 year old Jeffrey Roetzel is in custody and was picked up by US Marshals for extradition on Thursday.

The man walked away from the prison camp on Sunday. He turned himself in to the Poplar Bluff Police Department on Wednesday. Roetzel was in prison on multiple gun related charges. He is now facing a charge of escape from custody.

 

POPLAR BLUFF MAN IN CUSTODY AFTER RUNNING FROM AUTHORITIES IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

 

A Poplar Bluff man has been taken into custody after he and a woman allegedly ran from Pemiscot County authorities.

According to the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Office, a black male was seen attempting to get contraband inside a jail. When approached by a deputy, the man ran and escaped in a vehicle. During the escape, the woman driving the vehicle allegedly attempted to hit the deputy with the vehicle.

The two suspects, 26 year old Christopher Gainwell, of Poplar Bluff, and 44 year old Amy Vanover, of Sikeston, were later apprehended and taken into custody. They are being held in the Pemiscot County Jail on $200,000 bonds.

 

POPLAR BLUFF RESIDENT SELECTED FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR’S VETERANS SERVICE AWARD

 

A Poplar Bluff resident has been chosen as one of 35 winners of the 2015 Lieutenant Governor’s Veterans Service Award.

Dr. Farrah McSpadden was nominated for the award by Missouri Senator Doug Libla. The award recognizes Missouri veterans who provide exemplary volunteer service to their communities.

Roger Wheeler, of Kennett, was also one of the 35 recipients of the award.

 

TWO ARRESTED IN BUTLER COUNTY ON DRUG CHARGES

 

Two Butler County residents are facing drug related charges following their arrest on Sunday.

According to Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs the two suspects were taken into custody during an incident where deputies found multiple drugs, including suspected heroin and methamphetamine in a vehicle.

Deputies arrested 37 year old Kay Chaffin, of Poplar Bluff, and 42 year old Gilbert Lindsey, of Qulin.

 

SECOND PERSON DIES IN CONNECTION TO MOREHOUSE AREA WRECK

 

Updating a story we brought to you earlier this week, a second person has died in connection to a two vehicle wreck near Morehouse.

According to the Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred Tuesday morning on Eastbound US 60 when a vehicle, driven by 22 year old Trent McMillan, of Sikeston, failed to yield for another vehicle and was hit. The second vehicle then ran off the side of the road and overturned.

A passenger in the second vehicle, 73 year old David Quoos, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle, 73 year old Carol Quoos, was taken to an area hospital and later pronounced dead.

 

LOCAL CHURCH MAKES DONATION TO EUGENE FIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

 

A local church recently made a donation to a Poplar Bluff Elementary School to help with the school’s discretionary fund.

Holy Cross Episcopal Church donated hundreds of Box Tops that had been collected from church members to Eugene Field Elementary School.

Eugene Field has earned thousands of dollars from General Mills’ Box Tops for Education program over the past several years, according to coordinator Donna Glass. The money has been used to fund student field trips and purchase equipment such as a school camera and scanner.

AUTHORITIES ON SCENE OF STRUCTURE FIRE IN BUTLER COUNTY

The fire is located at a residence on Lake View Drive. Authorities say that everyone was able to get out of the residence safely.

GREENVILLE WOMAN FACING RESISTING ARREST CHARGE

 

A Greenville woman is facing multiple charges in connection to her arrest Wednesday in Wayne County.

According to the Highway Patrol, 25 year old Casandra Mann was taken into custody at around 10:45 am on charges of resisting arrest, careless and imprudent driving, failure to stop at a stop sign, and failure to drive on the right half of the roadway.

Following her arrest, Mann was held at the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

 

THIS WEEKEND MARKS THE START OF MISSOURI FIREARMS DEER SEASON

 

Hunters across the state of Missouri will be setting out this weekend for the start of firearms deer season.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, the November portion of the firearms deer season will run from November 14th through the 24th. Hunters can take one antlered deer during the entire firearms season.

TWO INJURED IN STODDARD COUNTY WRECK

 

Two people were injured Wednesday morning, one seriously, in a two vehicle wreck on Highway 60 in Stoddard County.

According to authorities, the wreck occurred when a vehicle driven by 31 year old Bobby Beights, of Poplar Bluff, failed to yield and struck another vehicle in the rear.

Beights suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. A passenger in Beights’ vehicle received minor injuries.

 

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE SEARCHING FOR AREA MAN

 

Poplar Bluff police are trying to get in contact with an area man and are seeking the public’s help in finding him.

VA HOSPITAL DONATES WHEELCHAIRS TO POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL DISTRICT

 

The John J. Pershing VA Medical Center recently made a donation to the Poplar Bluff R-1 School District.

The hospital donated two new wheelchairs which were designed for children.

A VA spokesperson said Poplar Bluff has a strong support network, and the hospital considers it an honor to give back when it can.

 

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE STUDENT AND STAFF MEMBER GIVEN STATE AWARDS

 

A Three Rivers College student and staff member were recently honored at the Missouri Community College Association’s annual conference.

Allen Blackman, an Information Systems Technology and Engineering student at Three Rivers College, received a Missouri Community College Association Student Leadership Award.

Blackman has been a Student Ambassador at Three Rivers for two years, taking on a leadership role in mentoring and training new Ambassadors. He has also helped to raise $1,000 for UCAN and helped collect items for the Baptist Student Union food pantry.

Also at the conference, Stacey Ward was given a Missouri Community College Association Senior Service Award. Ward is the Coordinator of Library Public Services and has been a constant fixture at Three Rivers’ Myrtle Rutland Library since 1984.

AUTHORITIES ON SCENE OF STRUCTURE FIRE IN BUTLER COUNTY Butler County authorities are at the scene of a structure fire.

The fire is located at a residence on Lake View Drive. Authorities say that everyone was able to get out of the residence safely.

  TWO INJURED IN STODDARD COUNTY WRECK Two people were injured Wednesday morning, one seriously, in a two vehicle wreck on Highway 60 in Stoddard County.

According to authorities, the wreck occurred when a vehicle driven by 31 year old Bobby Beights, of Poplar Bluff, failed to yield and struck another vehicle in the rear.

Beights suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. A passenger in Beights’ vehicle received minor injuries.

 

 

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE SEARCHING FOR AREA MAN Poplar Bluff police are trying to get in contact with an area man and are seeking the public’s help in finding him.

  GREENVILLE WOMAN FACING RESISTING ARREST CHARGE A Greenville woman is facing multiple charges in connection to her arrest Wednesday in Wayne County.

According to the Highway Patrol, 25 year old Casandra Mann was taken into custody at around 10:45 am on charges of resisting arrest, careless and imprudent driving, failure to stop at a stop sign, and failure to drive on the right half of the roadway.

Following her arrest, Mann was held at the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

  THIS WEEKEND MARKS THE START OF MISSOURI FIREARMS DEER SEASON Hunters across the state of Missouri will be setting out this weekend for the start of firearms deer season.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, the November portion of the firearms deer season will run from November 14th through the 24th. Hunters can take one antlered deer during the entire firearms season.

BUTLER COUNTY MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY FOLLOWING CHASE WITH AUTHORITIES  

A Poplar Bluff man was arrested early Tuesday morning following a chase with authorities.

According to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy attempted to pull over a vehicle after observing it having no front license plate. The driver accelerated and led the deputy on a chase before the suspect eventually hit a ditch. The driver then attempted to escape on foot but was apprehended by deputies.

The driver, 26 year old Kent Jenkins, was taken to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office on charges of driving while revoked/suspended and resisting arrest.

 

ONE DEAD, TWO INJURED, IN CONNECTION TO MOREHOUSE AREA WRECK

 

A Dexter man is dead in connection to a two vehicle wreck near Morehouse.

According to the Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred Tuesday morning on Eastbound US 60 when a vehicle, driven by 22 year old Trent McMillan, of Sikeston, failed to yield for another vehicle and was hit. The second vehicle then ran off the side of the road and overturned.

A passenger in the second vehicle, 73 year old David Quoos, was pronounced dead at the scene.

McMillan and the driver of the second vehicle were taken to an area hospital with seriously injuries.

 

MISSOURI STATE VETERANS CEMETERY TO HOLD VETERANS DAY PROGRAM

 

The Missouri State Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield will be holding their annual Veterans Day Program this afternoon.

The program will begin at 1 pm at the Committal Shelter Plaza in the cemetery. The keynote speaker for this year’s program is Robert Wayne Fortenberry, who is a Vietnam era veteran of the US Navy.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON SEXUAL ASSAULT WARRANT

 

A Poplar Bluff man has been taken into custody on a Pemiscot County Warrant.

According to authorities, 21 year old Anthony Wallace was arrested in Cape Girardeau County on a felony warrant for sexual assault.

Following the arrest, Wallace was held in the Cape Girardeau County Jail.

 

VEHICLE STRIKES POPLAR BLUFF HOSPITAL

 

A vehicle crashed into a Poplar Bluff hospital on Tuesday morning.

According to authorities, the incident occurred at the emergency room of the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. There were no injuries reported as a result of the crash.

 

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE TO HOST VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION AND RESOURCE FAIR

 

Local veterans are invited to attend a Veterans Day Celebration that will be held today in the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.

The celebration will begin at 11 am and will be headlined by Terrie Hobson, St. Louis Chapter President of the Missouri Department of American Gold Star Mothers Inc. The organization, which was established in 1928, helps support mothers who have lost a son or daughter in service of our country.

The celebration ceremony will also be webcast across the region at trcc.edu.

Following the ceremony, a Veterans Resource Fair will be held from 1 to 4 pm in the Bess Activity Center.

At the fair, representatives from the Veterans Administration, Three Rivers College, and a variety of business and community organizations will offer information about services available to veterans, including employment, education, health, transportation, and social services.

 

POPLAR BLUFF BASEBALL PLAYER TO SIGN LETTER OF INTENT TO PLAY AT MIZZOU

 

A ceremony will be held this morning for a Poplar Bluff Mules baseball player who will be signing his national letter of intent.

Senior Kameron Misner will sign the letter saying he will be playing for the University of Missouri Tigers. The ceremony will begin at 8 am in the lobby of the E.T. Peters Gym on the Poplar Bluff High School campus.

ONE INJURED IN WRECK OUTSIDE OF DEXTER

 

One person has suffered serious injuries following a two vehicle wreck near Dexter.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred when a vehicle driven by 64 year old David Miller, of Essex, turned onto Highway 60 shortly before 6 pm Monday evening.

The taillights on Miller’s vehicle were reportedly inoperable and his vehicle was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by 37 year old Aaron Menley, of Dexter.

Menley suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was taken by Air Evac to an area hospital.

 

ADVANCE TEEN FACING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGE

 

An Advance teen was recently taken into custody on a child pornography charge.

According to Missouri Case Net, 17 year old Jarett Simmons was arrested by the Advance Police Department on a charge of possession of child pornography.

Simmons bond was set at $35,000 cash only.

 

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FACING ATTEMPTED ROBBERY CHARGE

 

A Poplar Bluff man has been taken into custody on an attempted robbery charge.

According to Deputy Chief Jeff Rolland with the Poplar Bluff Police Department, on Saturday officers were dispatched to a residence in reference to an assault. At the residence the victim told officers that he was approached by a man armed with a baseball bat.

The suspect then demanded the victim show him what he was carrying. The victim then ran from the scene. The victim later identified the suspect as 43 year old Randy Foster.

Foster was booked for 1st degree attempted robbery and lodged at the Butler County Justice Center.

 

TWO YEAR OLD SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WRECK, DRIVER FACING CHARGES

 

A two year old boy was seriously injured Monday afternoon in a Carter County wreck.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that the wreck occurred shortly after 4 pm on Highway 60 at Ellsinore.

A vehicle, driven by 25 year old Matthew Maxwell, of Grandin, allegedly swerved and struck a second vehicle causing it to lose control and overturn. Maxwell’s vehicle then crossed the median, hit a ditch, and struck a parked vehicle.

A two year old child in Maxwell’s vehicle suffered serious injuries and was later flown to a St. Louis hospital. Maxwell and a female passenger both suffered moderate injuries.

Maxwell was later arrested on charges including DWI – drugs, and felony 2nd degree endangering the welfare of a child.

 

DRIVERS EXAMINATION STATIONS TO BE CLOSED FOR VETERANS DAY

 

Anyone who is looking to take a driver’s test Wednesday will need to wait a day.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has announced that driver examination stations throughout the state will be closed Wednesday in observance of Veterans Day.

The examination stations will also be closed later this month for Thanksgiving.

 

STODDARD COUNTY ROAD TO BE REDUCED THIS WEEK FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS

 

Route 25 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The work zone is located from Route Z to Route H.

Weather permitting; work will take place through Friday from 8:30 am to 3 pm daily.

 

 

University of Missouri President Tim Wolfe resigns

PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI RESIGNS  

After a weekend of tension, frustration, and anger, the President University of Missouri officially resigns.

KWOC News has learned that the president of the University of Missouri System says he is resigning after his handling of racial issues. President Tim Wolfe said Monday that his resignation is effective immediately. The announcement came at a special meeting of the university system's governing body, the Board of Curators.

Black student groups have been complaining for months about racial slurs and other slights on the system's overwhelmingly white flagship campus in Columbia. Their efforts got a boost over the weekend when 30 black football players announced they wouldn't participate in team activities until Wolfe was removed.

RIPLEY COUNTY MAN ARRESTED AFTER A YEAR LONG INVESTIGATION  

A Ripley County man is caught after a multi-year criminal investigation.

Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News, authorities obtained an arrest warrant for 66 year old Kenneth White.  He was located at his residence in Fairdealing and taken into custody.

White has been charged with 17 separate counts, including first-degree statutory sodomy, incest, and statutory rape of a child under the age of 14.  Parrott says this was a joint effort by the Ripley County Sheriff's Office, the Carter County Sheriff's Office, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

White was transported to the Carter County Jail where he is being held on a $200,000 cash bond.

 

SILVA MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES OVER THE WEEKEND

 

A Silva man is facing multiple felony charges following his arrest Saturday afternoon.

According to Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, 58 year old Lloyd Foster was arrested on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and a misdemeanor amount of marijuana.

Foster was transported to the Wayne County Jail, where he was booked and lodged.

 

 

QULIN MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGES OVER THE WEEKEND

 

A Qulin man is facing drug charges following his arrest in Butler County.

According to the Butler County Sheriff’s Department, 22 year old Keith Jones was recently arrested on charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jones was transported to the Butler County Justice Center, where is has booked and later released.

OXLY MAN ARRESTED ON SEVERAL DRUGS CHARGES OVER THE WEEKEND IN BUTLER COUNTY

 

An Oxly man is facing several drug charges after his arrest Friday Night in Butler County.

Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that 44 year old David Hatton was arrested shortly before 10 pm on felony charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Parrott says that Hatton is also charged with unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia – methamphetamine and possession of marijuana.

 

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGES

 

Poplar Bluff police arrested a man last week on drug charges.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department on Thursday evening, an officer found 23 year old Joshua Wilkerson to be in possession of a plastic bag with an undisclosed amount of marijuana and a smoking pipe which field tested positive for methamphetamine.

Wilkerson was taken into custody on charges of possession of a controlled substance– methamphetamine, possession of 35 grams or less of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

 

HIGHWAY PATROL URGES DRIVER TO BE CAUTIOUS WITH CHANGING WEATHER

 

With temperatures starting to approach freezing overnights across the state, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is asking drivers to be cautious.

Colonel J. Bret Johnson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that widely varying temperatures can leave roadways or bridge floors covered with frost.

Even though roads appear to be clear, it is important to slow down and watch for slick areas, especially early in the morning.

Johnson also says that temperature changes also cause fog to develop. Drivers need to slow down, turn on their headlights, and be prepared to stop in foggy conditions.

ONE DEAD, ANOTHER SERIOUSLY INJURED, FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK IN PEMISCOT COUNTY  

A Hayti woman is dead following a single vehicle wreck Thursday morning.

Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that a vehicle driven by 60 year old Everlene Fane ran off a County Road, struck a ditch, and overturned near Hayti.

Fane was pronounced dead at the scene. A 79 year old passenger in the vehicle suffered serious injuries and was flown to a Memphis hospital.

 

DRUGS AND STOLEN FIREARM FOUND DURING TRAFFIC STOP

 

Two men have been taken into custody in connection to a traffic stop in Poplar Bluff.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, an officer conducted the stop shortly after 6 pm Wednesday for an improper registration. During the stop the officer observed marijuana in the vehicle.

A further search resulted in officers finding marijuana, pills, and multiple guns, including one that was identified as stolen.

21 year old Tavion Young and 18 year old Keith Farr, both of Malden, were taken into custody.

Both, Young and Farr are facing charges of receiving stolen property, unlawful use of a weapon, and possession of a controlled substance.

 

POPLAR BLUFF CHURCH TO HOST UNITY SERVICE THIS WEEKEND WITH POLICE OFFICERS

 

A Poplar Bluff church has announced they will be hosting a Unity Service on Sunday with law enforcement.

The service, “Bridging the Gap,” will begin at 5 pm at Mt. Calvary Powerhouse Church on Speedway Drive.

TWO ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO REPORTED STOLEN VEHICLE

 

A stolen vehicle report led to the arrest of two people Wednesday in Poplar Bluff.

Additionally, Hovis said that Tropf is lodged at the Butler County Justice Center on tampering charges along with a no bond probation and parole warrant.

 

TWO SERIOUSLY INJURED IN HEAD-ON COLLISION

 

Two people were flown to a St. Louis hospital Thursday in connection to a head on collision in Iron County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred when a vehicle driven by 17 year old Hunter Skaggs, of Rolla, ran off the side of the road, overcorrected, and then hit another vehicle head on.

Both Skaggs and the driver of the second vehicle, 47 year old Lockianna Bennett, of Patterson, were seriously injured in the collision.

 

PERFORMANCES OF JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT TO BEGIN NEXT WEEK

 

Center Stage and the Three Rivers College Music Department are preparing for their upcoming performances of the hit musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

The shows at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center will begin at 7 pm on November 12th, 13th, and 14th. A final performance is scheduled for 2 pm on November 15th.

The musical retells the Biblical story of Joseph and his coat of many colors as an energetic, family-friendly musical.

Tickets can be purchased for $10 at the Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce and the Three Rivers Financial Services Office. Tickets also will be sold at the door.

TWO POPLAR BLUFF MEN ARRESTED ON ASSAULT CHARGES  

Continuing to follow a story we brought you first, authorities have arrested two men in connection, to an assault in Poplar Bluff.

 Both Buddy Lacy and Joshua Blocker are charged with 1st Degree Assault and are lodged in the Butler County Justice Center on $250,000 cash bond.

 

TWO ARRESTED ON HEROIN CHARGES IN WAYNE COUNTY

 

Two Piedmont residents are facing heroin charges following their arrest Wednesday night in Wayne County.

Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that 43 year old Nathan Coleman and 38 year old Yolanda Braden were arrested shortly after 8 pm on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – heroin.

Parrott says that Braden is also charged with possession of a controlled substance for hydrocodone and Coleman had warrants out of Pemiscot and Butler Counties.

 

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR SPRING SEMESTER AT THREE RIVERS COLLEGE

 

Registration is now open for the upcoming spring semester at Three Rivers College.

New and returning students can register for classes at the Poplar Bluff campus and the centers in Sikeston, Dexter, Kennett, Malden, Willow Springs, Piedmont, and Cape Girardeau.

Those interested in enrolling can browse available courses by clicking “Search for Classes” at trcc.edu. Current students, with advisor approval, can register online through the myTRCC system.

Prospective students must fill out a free application and attend a orientation session to be eligible to register for classes. For assistance or to schedule an orientation session, contact the Welcome Center at 573-840-9605.

Registration will continue through January 15th, with the semester beginning on January 19th.

FLU CLINIC SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

 

The Butler County Health Department will continue their series of free flu clinics today in Poplar Bluff.

The clinic is scheduled for 8:30 am to 4 pm at the Butler County Health Department.

Officials at the Health Department say a yearly flu vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months and older as the first and most important step in protecting against the flu.

Flu vaccines are designed to protect against the main flu viruses that research suggests will be the most common during the upcoming season.

Children 6 to 23 months old and adults over 18 years of age will be offered the flu shot at the clinic, while children who are 24 months to 18 years of age will have the choice of receiving a flu mist or the injection.

SOFTBALL AND FOOTBALL PLAYER NAMED ATHLETES OF THE MONTH

 

A Softball and Football player have been chosen as October Athletes of the Month at Poplar Bluff High School.

Shelby Sievers and Steven Haley were chosen for the honor by the Poplar Bluff Mules Booster Club.

Sievers is ranked 20th in her class with a 10.643 GPA. She also holds the record for hits in a single season with 50, runs batted in with 34, and extra base hits with 21. Her batting average is .543 and her pitching record is 12-3.

Haley maintains an 11.100 GPA, and scored a 31 on his ACTs. He had 21 tackles for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles and two interceptions during the season.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL RESIGNS FOLLOWING ACCUSATION  

The Naylor Assistant Principal who is facing a rape charge has resigned from his position at the school.

The Naylor Board of Education has accepted the resignation of 52 year old John Mullins, of Gatewood.

Mullins was arrested in October after a student told authorities that Mullins had sexually assaulted her.

Mullins has been charged with 1st degree rape, 1st degree sodomy, and two counts of sexual contact with a student.

 

ANNAPOLIS MAN FACING MULTIPLE CHARGES FOLLOWING ARREST

 

Authorities have arrested an Iron County man on multiple charges in Butler County.

 Sample told KWOC News that the subject has been identified as 31 year old Nathaniel McCormick, of Annapolis.

 

PIEDMONT MAN ARRESTED ON ASSAULT WARRANT

 

A Piedmont man was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon on an assault warrant.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 28 year old Jeffrey Roux was arrested on a Carter County warrant for assault at around 4:30 pm in Wayne County.

Following his arrest, Roux was held at the Wayne County Jail.

 

POPLAR BLUFF MAN FACING ASSAULT CHARGE

 

A Poplar Bluff man is facing an assault charge in connection to an incident Monday morning.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, a woman told officers that a vehicle driven by 28 year old Larrecus Thomas had struck her vehicle multiple times. The woman said Thomas had also banged on her window and attempted to get in her vehicle.

Thomas told police that he just wanted his cell phone back from the woman.

Thomas was arrested and lodged at the Butler County Justice Center on a charge of 2nd degree assault.

 

BLOOMFIELD MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG WARRANT

 

A Bloomfield man is facing a drug charge following his arrest in Stoddard County.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 25 year old Zachary Mitchell was recently arrested on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance.

Mitchell’s bond was set at $15,000 cash.

The Missouri Department of Transportation will be conducting a statewide test today to test the department’s readiness for the upcoming winter season.

During the drill, MoDOT employees will react to a simulated forecast of significant snow for the entire state. The department’s emergency operations centers will activate and maintenance employees will be deployed to their trucks.

Motorists may notice increased numbers of MoDOT vehicles on state routes during the drill. In rural areas, crews will deploy after 8 a.m. In urban areas, the drill will not begin until after 9 am. The exercise should be completed by 3 pm.

11 YEAR OLD GIRL HIT BY VEHICLE IN BUTLER COUNTY  

An 11 year old Poplar Bluff girl was hit by a vehicle Friday afternoon in Butler County.

Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that the girl ran into the path of a vehicle on Highway 53, one mile south of Poplar Bluff at around 4:30 pm Friday.

The girl was flown to a Memphis hospital with serious injuries.

 

MAN ARRESTED AFTER ATTEMPTING TO RUN FROM OFFICER

 

A Qulin man is facing multiple charges, including resisting arrest, following an incident with an officer at a Poplar Bluff business.

Chief Deputy Jeff Rolland with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that the officer was at the business Sunday evening when an employee alerted him that a male subject had used a razor knife to cut the packaging of a BB gun.

The officer contacted the subject, who said his name was Steven Rick. During an ID Check, the officer was told that Steven Rick was incarcerated. After the officer told the subject this, the man allegedly began to run.

He was apprehended and admitted to the officer that his name was Joseph Rick. Rick was taken into custody on charges including resisting arrest and 2nd degree property damage.

 

PAVEMENT REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY

 

Motorists in Butler County should expect delays today on Route UU.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route UU will be reduced to one lane from 10 am to 3:30 pm for pavement repairs.

The work zone will be located between Route 53 and County Road 320.

 

CAMPBELL MAN FACING ATTEMPTED BURGLARY CHARGE OUT OF STODDARD COUNTY

 

A Campbell man was recently taken into custody on an attempted burglary charge.

Few details about the incident are available, but the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department tells KWOC News that 51 year old William Joyner is facing a charge of 2nd degree attempted burglary.

Joyner’s bond was set at $7,500.

 

BICYCLE RIDER HIT BY VEHICLE IN WARDELL

 

A bicycle rider suffered serious injuries Friday when he was hit by a vehicle.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 20 year old Carlos Holder, of Wardell, was attempting to pass the bicyclist, 45 year old Tommy Collins, also of Wardell, when Holder’s vehicle struck Collins.

Collins was seriously injured and flown to a Memphis hospital following the incident.

 

MAN CHARGED WITH FIRST DEGREE MURDER IN WARDELL SHOOTING

 

Updating a story we brought to you last week, a Wardell man is facing a murder charge in connection to the shooting death of Russell Gray Jr.

Gray was shot and killed Thursday evening at a residence in Wardell.

According to authorities, 51 year old Paul Wayne Rudd was taken into custody and has been charged with 1st degree murder and armed criminal action.

 

MONTH LONG BRIDGE REPAIR PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY IN WAYNE COUNTY

 

Route 34 in Wayne County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction for most of this month so contractor crews can perform bridge repairs.

The section of roadway to be reduced is located from Missouri Route 49 to U.S. Route 67.

Work will be performed through Wednesday, November 25th from 6 am to 6 pm daily.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED OVER THE WEEKEND ON ROBBERY CHARGES  

A Poplar Bluff man is facing robbery charges after he pulled a knife on an off duty officer.

According to Deputy Chief Jeff Rolland with the Poplar Bluff Police Department, 57 year old Brian Conley attempted to steal shoes not once but twice from a Poplar Bluff Business.  On the second attempt he was confronted by a loss prevention officer, (which is an off-duty Poplar Bluff Police Officer.)  Conley, then allegedly pulled a knife on the off- duty officer in a threatening manner.  The officer was able to take Conley into custody without further incident.

He was transported to the Butler County Justice Center, where he was booked on charges of 1st Degree Robbery, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Stealing.

 

DEXTER WOMAN ARRESTED ON DRUG RELATED WARRANT

 

A Dexter woman was taken into custody recently on a drug related warrant.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 51 year old Joy Lynn Ward was arrested on a warrant for stealing a controlled substance.

Her bond was set at $50,000.

 

MULTIPLE BLOOD DRIVES SCHEDULED FOR THIS MONTH IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

 

The American Red Cross has announced several blood drives that will be held this month in Southeast Missouri.

A blood drive has been scheduled for 9 am to 2 pm on November 4th at the Senath Hornersville High School.

Additional blood drives will be held on November 6th at Poplar Bluff High School and November 9th at East Carter County High School.

HIGHWAY K VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT FUNDRAISER TO BE HELD ON NOVEMBER 7TH

 

The Highway K Volunteer Fire Department in Doniphan has scheduled their annual chili supper and bake sale fundraiser for this Saturday.

The event will be held at the firehouse at 6 pm. In addition to the good food, this year will feature a raffle worth $400 in auto service. Adults get in for $5, kids under 12 for $3.50.

All funds from the event will go to buying equipment for the fire fighters and covering operating expenses.

 

ESSEX MAN ARRESTED ON AN ASSAULT WARRANT OVER THE WEEKEND

 

An Essex man is facing an assault charge following his arrest Saturday in Stoddard County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 48 year old Ricky Smith was taken into custody on a warrant for 2nd Degree Assault.

Smith was transported to the Stoddard County Jail on a $4,500.00 cash bond.

 

FISH FRY TO BE HELD AT WHEATLEY BUILDING THIS WEEKEND

 

Gold Star Lodge #168 is sponsoring a Fish Fry this weekend at the Wheatley Building in Poplar Bluff.

BUTLER COUNTY TORNADO SIRENS TO BE TESTED TODAY

 

Authorities in Butler County will be testing the tornado sirens today.

According to Butler County Emergency Management Director Robbie Myers, the sirens are scheduled to be tested today at noon.

Myers says that the tests will be conducted every month on the first Monday.

AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING SHOOTING IN PEMISCOT COUNTY  

One person was reportedly shot Thursday night in Pemiscot County.

Few details are available about the shooting, other than it occurred in Wardell. The Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Department has asked the Missouri State Highway Patrol to assist with the investigation.

MAN ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGEDLY TRYING TO RUN FROM OFFICER IN POPLAR BLUFF

 

A man was arrested Wednesday night after he allegedly attempted to run from an officer during a traffic stop.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, the officer had conducted the stop after noticing a vehicle with no front license plate.

The vehicle pulled into a driveway and then 36 year old Douglas Henson exited the right rear door and ran south. The officer followed and arrested Henson following a short foot pursuit.

Henson reportedly has an active felony warrant out of St. Genevieve County for dangerous drugs.

 

YOUTH FIREARMS DEER SEASON TO BEGIN THIS WEEKEND

 

Young hunters will be out in the woods this weekend for youth firearms deer season.

The season is set to run on October 31st and November 1st. Harvest hours are one half hour before sunrise to one half hour after sunset.

Hunters must be at least 6 and no older than 15 on Saturday to participate. Additional regulations and permits are available online at the Missouri Department of Conservation website.

 

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS FROM THE POPLAR BLUFF POLICE DEPARTMENT

 

Halloween is here and Poplar Bluff Police Chief Danny Whiteley has some tips to help keep your child safe while trick or treating.

Chief Whiteley says parents should establish a route for children, making sure they stay within familiar areas and surroundings. An adult should accompany young children. Parents should also remind kids not to enter strangers' homes or cars, and to avoid homes without an outside light on.

Be sure to tell your children to not eat treats until they get home and remember to inspect all treats before allowing your kids to eat them.

 

KENNETT WOMAN ARRESTED ON FELONY DRUG CHARGE

 

A Kennett woman is facing a felony drug charge in connection to her arrest Thursday in Dunklin County.

Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that 31 year old Shavini Chauhan was arrested Thursday afternoon on a felony charge of possession of drugs with intent to distribute.

Chauhan was taken to the Dunklin County Jail following the arrest.

 

MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AFTER ALLEGEDLY MAKING INAPPROPRIATE COMMENTS TO 911 OPERATOR

 

Officials say a 47 year old Poplar Bluff man has been taken into custody after he allegedly made inappropriate comments to a 911 operator.

3RD ANNUAL IRON MOUNTAIN MARKET FALL FESTIVAL SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND

 

The Iron Mountain Market in Poplar Bluff will be hosting their third annual Fall Festival on Saturday.

Events will include the Grilled Cheese Cook-Off and Costume Contest in addition to vendors with crafts, baked goods, fall produce, food, and more.

TWO TEENAGERS SERIOUSLY INJURED IN DUNKLIN COUNTY WRECK  

Two teenagers received serious injuries following a motorcycle wreck in Dunklin County.

Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that the wreck occurred shortly before 7 pm Wednesday near Campbell.

The motorcycle was being driven by 19 year old Joshua Paxton, of Campbell, when it was struck from behind by another vehicle.  Paxton and a 16 year old female passenger were then thrown from the motorcycle.

The motorcycle reportedly had no rear lights or reflectors when it was struck.

 

POPLAR BLUFF SHOOTING VICTIM DIES

 

The victim of a shooting earlier this month in Poplar Bluff has passed away.

According to authorities 52 year old Mitchell Dugger was shot during a family dispute at a Poplar Bluff hospital on October 14th.

He reportedly died on Tuesday.

58 year old Eddie Skorcz, of Poplar Bluff was arrested on charges of 1st degree assault and armed criminal action following the shooting.

 

POPLAR BLUFF MAN SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS ON MURDER CHARGE

 

A Poplar Bluff man has been sentenced to two decades in prison after pleading guilty to a murder charge.

According to Missouri Case Net, Matthew Jenkins was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in the Department of Corrections on a charge of 2nd degree murder.

The charge stems from an incident in January of 2013 where Jenkins hit both of his parents repeatedly with an aluminum baseball bat. His father, Carl Jenkins, died a few weeks after the attack.

 

MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGE IN KENNETT

 

A Kennett man is facing a drug charge following his arrest on Wednesday.

According to the Kennett Police Department, officers were checking a residence Wednesday morning for an individual that was wanted on a warrant.

At the residence they made contact with 24 year old Robert Davis and also observed narcotics and paraphernalia laying in plain view.

Davis was arrested for possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute along with a Dunklin County warrant.

 

TWIN RIVERS HIGH SCHOOL TO HOST FLU CLINIC THIS EVENING

 

Anyone looking to get a flu shot will have the opportunity this evening in Broseley.

The Butler County Health Department is hosting a free flu clinic at Twin Rivers High School from 3:30 to 6 pm today.

Officials at the Health Department say a yearly flu vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months and older and it’s the first and most important step in protecting against the flu.

Flu vaccines are designed to protect against the main flu viruses that research suggests will be the most common during the upcoming season.

Children 6 to 23 months old and adults over 18 years of age will be offered the flu shot at the clinic, while children who are 24 months to 18 years of age will have the choice of receiving a flu mist or the injection.

OLYMPIC HOPEFUL SPEAKS TO POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS

 

The Poplar Bluff High School Cross Country team received an unexpected pep talk last week while preparing for their district championships.

Mules Cross Country Head Coach Beth Lewis-Muse arranged for the team to talk to USA Team marathon runner Josphat Boit over Skype.

Boit, who is currently training for the Olympic trials in February, was teammates with Lewis-Muse at Central Methodist University. He answered student questions about his training regimen, recovery, nutrition and psychology.

The pep-talk appeared to work out as three team members from Poplar Bluff, Katie Sliger, Isaiah Williams and Wesley Moore, went on to qualify for sectionals during the Class 4, District 1 Championship.
