BURLARY SUSPECT TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

A Burglary investigation in rural Kennett led to a two-hour standoff Sunday evening before a suspect was taken into custody.

According to Dunklin County Sheriff Nick Darter, deputies responded to a residence around 6:15 pm Sunday evening, after receiving a report of a burglary in progress with the suspect allegedly still inside the residence.

Deputies made brief contact with the suspect, who then barricaded himself in a bedroom. After approximately two hours of negotiations, officers forced entry into the bedroom and took the suspect into custody without further incident.

The suspect, whose name is not being released pending the filing of formal charges, was transported to the Dunklin County Jail.

MOTORISTS ASKED TO GIVE TURTLES A BRAKE

Hotter weather means that turtles are more active this time of year and conservation officials are asking for motorists to be on the lookout.

The Missouri Department of Conservation encourages drivers to be cautious about turtles on the roads. Common turtles spotted crossing Missouri roads include three-toed box turtles, ornate box turtles, and snapping turtles.

Vehicles are one of the leading threats box turtles face in Missouri, and the MDC urges motorists to be cautious and slow down if they see a turtle in the road. If helping a turtle make it safely across, check for traffic and always move the turtle in the direction it is traveling.

Additionally, MDC urges the public to leave turtles in the wild.
