STATE OFFICIALS INVESTIGATING FISH CASUALTY EVENT IN BLACK RIVER

Missouri state officials are investigating a fish casualty event on Black River.

According to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, on June 6th, a concerned citizen notified the Missouri Department of Natural Resources of the presence of dead fish in a tributary to the West Fork of the Black River located in Reynolds County.

Later that day, the Doe Run Company notified the department of a potential release from the company’s wastewater treatment facility. The released wastewater was suspected of exceeding permitted effluent limits of pH contributing to the fish kill.

The department collected water quality samples upstream and downstream of the West Fork of the Black River, including sampling points for several miles downstream on the river. The water quality monitoring results were within acceptable levels for pH and dissolved oxygen, and are protective for whole-body contact for human health and aquatic species.

Officials say the event is not being considered an environmental emergency and the investigation is ongoing.

MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION SPONSOR A HIGHWAY PROGRAM NOW AVAILABLE STATEWIDE

Area organizations now have the opportunity to take a hand in keeping Southeast Missouri looking beautiful.

The Missouri Department of Transportation’s Sponsor-A-Highway program, previously exclusive to the St. Louis and Kansas City areas, is now available statewide, providing an expanded opportunity to help keep roadsides cleaner and safer across the state.

Businesses, organizations, community groups and individuals can sponsor one-mile highway sections statewide through a MoDOT-certified service provider, to handle litter removal and related maintenance on their behalf.

Most highways in Missouri are now included in the Sponsor-A-Highway program, with the vast majority of roadway miles open for sponsorship.

Through the service provider, each sponsored roadway is cleaned at least once per month, or more frequently as needed. In recognition of their support, sponsors receive Sponsor-A-Highway signage displaying their name and logo along the designated stretch of highway.
