MOTORISTS ASKED TO WATCH FOR STUDENTS ON THE ROADWAYS
Students in Arkansas will be returning to school this week and authorities are asking motorists to be prepared.
Drivers should expect a change in traffic patterns ─ school buses and parents taking their children to school and many young drivers will join other motorists on the road and affect the morning and afternoon commute. Also expect an increase in pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
Drivers, when you see a stopped school bus, stay alert and follow the law. Children may not be aware of traffic and dart unexpectedly into the roadway.
Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about riding a bus, walking, or driving to school in a safe manner. If they ride a bike, please make sure they wear a helmet and follow traffic laws.
RARE DRAGONFLY DISCOVERED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
One of the rarest dragonflies in North America was recently observed in Southeast Missouri.
The Missouri Department of Conservation has confirmed to KWOC News the first-ever observation of a male Hine’s emerald dragonfly in Bollinger County.
MDC staff and partners made the discovery during routine biological monitoring near a spring-fed wetland in late June.
MDC Natural History Biologist Steve Schell says that the Hine’s emerald dragonfly is one of the rarest dragonflies in North America. He added that it wasn’t known from Missouri until 1999, and since then has only been documented from a handful of eastern Ozark counties.
The Hine’s emerald dragonfly is endangered under federal and state law, making it illegal to harm or collect without permits.
