POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL FOUNDATION APPROVES THREE CLASSROOM GRANTS FOR HIGH SCHOOL
Three Poplar Bluff High School classrooms will be getting technological upgrades thanks to a grant from the Poplar Bluff School Foundation.
The Foundation has recently allocated $3,500 for technology upgrades through the nonprofit's innovative educational project program.
Foundation board members unanimously approved to finance rovers, hubs, and graphing calculators for the Math Department; a wall-mounted television and camera setup for family and consumer sciences; and drone kits for computer science.

11TH ANNUAL RIDE FOR A CURE TO BE HELD IN AUGUST
The date has been announced for the 11th Annual Ride for a Cure Dice Run in memory of Larry Maronay.
Registration for the event will begin at 10 am on August 23rd at the Dexter Elks Lodge, with the ride beginning at 11 am. The entry fee is $20 per bike and $10 for an additional rider with a meal included at the end of the ride.
All proceeds will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

APPLICATIONS FOR SPRING MANAGED TURKEY HUNTS AVAILABLE THIS MONTH
Missouri conservation officials say that applications will be available this month for spring managed turkey hunts.
According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, Missouri hunters can apply online for the managed hunts during the month of February through the MDC website at mdc.mo.gov/SpringTurkeyHunts.
Managed hunt details and application procedures are outlined on that webpage. Drawing results will be posted starting March 15th.
Spring turkey hunting youth weekend will be April 12th and 13th with the regular spring season running April 21st through May 11th.
Detailed information on spring turkey hunting will be available in the MDC 2025 Spring Turkey Hunting Regulations and Information booklet which will be available beginning in March.
PLANS ANNOUNCED TO REPLACE BRIDGE OVER OTTER CREEK IN WAYNE COUNTY
The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced plans to replace a bridge on northbound U.S. Route 67 over Otter Creek in Wayne County.
The bridge is located between County Road 547 and County Road 546.
During construction, northbound traffic will be shifted to a head-to-head configuration on the southbound bridge. The head-to-head configuration will allow the roadway to remain open for a majority of work, with one lane of traffic in each direction in the vicinity of the bridge.
Short-term closures are anticipated during traffic shifts.
Any person affected by this project may request that a public meeting be held in regard to the proposed improvements. For more information, please contact MoDOT Project Manager Chris Crocker at 573-472-9033.
Officials say that work to replace the bridge could begin as early as July 2025 and work will be underway for approximately four months.
STODDARD COUNTY AUTHORITIES WARNING OF SCAM CALLERS CLAIMING TO BE FROM THE SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT
Scam phone calls are an ongoing concern in Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas and Stoddard County authorities are wanting residents to be on the lookout.
According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Office, they have received information from residents who have received phone calls where the Caller ID is showing the sheriffs office phone number and the caller is posing to be a deputy or detective.
The caller will then demand money to pay for an outstanding warrant.
Officials say that the Sheriff’s Office does not solicit money for payments of warrants over the phone.
If you receive a call like this, do not give the caller any information or pay them any money.
CULVERT REPLACEMENT PROJECT SET FOR THIS MONTH IN STODDARD AND SCOTT COUNTIES
Route Y in Scott and Stoddard Counties will be closed for most of this month as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace several culverts under the roadway.
The work zone is located from Route BB in Scott County to Route DD in Stoddard County.
Crews will start near Route BB and close small sections of the roadway as work progresses.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily through Friday, February 21.

CREWS RESPOND TO STORAGE TANK FIRE IN CAMPBELL AREA
Crews with the Campbell Volunteer Fire Department and Malden Fire Department responded to the scene of a fuel storage tank fire Monday night.
According to the Campbell Volunteer Fire Department, storage tanks containing over 10,000 gallons of diesel and gasoline were on fire off of H Highway.
Officials reported that there were several ruptures and small explosions visible. Crews were able to contain the fire so firefighters could reach the shut off valve and terminate the fuel to the fire.

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN CARTER COUNTY CRASH
A Poplar Bluff woman was transported to an area hospital Monday night after a crash near Ellsinore.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the 21 year old woman was driving on US Highway 60 when she struck something that was being towed by another vehicle.
The woman suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken to a Cape Girardeau hospital. No injuries were listed for the driver of the other vehicle.
ARKANSAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AWARDED ALMOST 25 MILLION DOLLAR GRANT FOR CORNING BYPASS
The Future Interstate 57 project has taken another step forward thanks to a grant to construct a bypass in the Corning area.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a $24.9 million Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity grant to the Arkansas Department of Transportation to be used toward the construction of a 4-mile highway that bypasses U.S. Highway 67 around the west side of Corning.
The Corning Bypass will be a four-lane, fully controlled access facility that will include two interchanges with U. S. Highway 67. The project will provide an alternate route for commercial trucks around Corning’s downtown business district and will improve safety and quality of life for residents.
The Corning Bypass is part of the larger, multi-state effort to complete Future Interstate 57 between Walnut Ridge and Poplar Bluff.
DATE SET FOR DONIPHAN R-1 KINDERGARTEN AND PRE-K SCREENING
The Doniphan R-1 school district has set the date for screening for kindergarten and pre-kindergarten students.
According to school officials, screening will take place on Monday, March 17th.
To be eligible for pre-kindergarten, children must be four years old before July 31st, 2025. For kindergarten students, they must be five years old by that date.

BACH TO THE FUTURE RETURNS TO THE TINNIN FINE ARTS CENTER THIS WEEK
World renowned performers will be at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center this week performing classics from Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE TO CAUSE INTERSTATE DELAYS IN THE MATTHEWS AREA
Northbound Interstate 55 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane with a 14-foot width restriction this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.
The section of the interstate that is being reduced is located between mile markers 57.8 and 58.2 near Matthews.
Work will take place today and tomorrow from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Three members of a Poplar Bluff family are now a part of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.
According to Poplar Bluff Athletics Director Kent Keith, the Godwin Golf Family was inducted into the Hall on Sunday.
Buddy Godwin won more than 100 amateur tournaments and was also an eight-time winner of the Ozark Open. He also won the Missouri Amateur in 1973 and later competed in several PGA Senior Tour events.

Bobby Godwin was a three-year letterman at Poplar Bluff High School, competing on the Mules’ 1980 and 1981 state championship teams. Beginning in 1989, he qualified for seven USGA events and won numerous local, state and national amateur tournaments, including the 1999 Missouri State Stroke Play championship, and was the Missouri Golf Association Player of the Year that year.
Ben Godwin lettered in golf for four years at Poplar Bluff, competing on the Mules’ 1988 state championship team. He began winning local and state amateur tournaments in 1990, qualifying for six USGA events. He won the two-man state team event with Bobby in 1998 and eventually won the Missouri Amateur in 2003 and 2006.
Buddy and Ben are only the second father-son duo to win the Missouri Amateur following Bill and Payne Stewart.
TWO ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGEDLY ATTEMPTING TO FLEE FROM POLICE IN POPLAR BLUFF
Two people were taken into custody after allegedly attempting to flee from police over the weekend in Poplar Bluff.
According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, on Saturday officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop near Harper and Highway 67, at which time the driver fled from police. A short time later officers located the vehicle as well as two subjects.
Officers also located several baggies of suspected narcotics where the subjects walked as well as matching foot prints.
42 year old Atari Amos and 20 year old Chloe Chaffin, both of Poplar Bluff, were arrested and transported to the Butler County Justice Center.
Officials say that charges for distribution of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting arrest were sent to the Butler County Prosecutor's Office.
MAN FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING IN NAYLOR
A subject was flown from the scene of an accidental shooting Monday morning in Ripley County.
According to the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a residence in Naylor shortly before 4:30 am Monday, for a shooting.
The victim said he was pulling a rifle out from behind the seat of his truck when it discharged, striking him in the lower leg.
The victim was flown from the scene by helicopter.
KENNETT MAN RECEIVES OVER 100 YEAR SENTENCE IN CONNECTION TO STANDOFF IN SENATH
A standoff in Senath last year has resulted in an over 100 year sentence for a Kennett man.
25 year old Kenneth Canday was convicted in November for his role in a January 2024 incident where he and his codefendants lured a man to an apartment in Senath before beating, cutting, and burning him, along with robbing the victim of his cell phone.
The next day, police attempted to arrest the defendant when he barricaded the residence with two hostages inside. Hostage negotiators talked him into releasing one of the hostages approximately four hours into the standoff.
A SWAT team made entry approximately eight hours into the standoff, rescuing the second hostage and taking Canday into custody.
A Pemiscot County judge sentenced Canday to serve a total of
102 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections, with the counts where Canday will have to serve the time consecutively to each other adding up to 41 years.
The charges included 1st degree kidnapping, 1st degree robbery, 2nd degree assault, and armed criminal action, among others.
WATERFOWL MEETINGS SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK IN DEXTER AND PORTAGEVILLE
Officials with the Missouri Department of Conservation will be hosting waterfowl meetings this week in two Southeast Missouri towns.
The meetings have been scheduled for 7 to 9 pm tonight at Fisher Delta Regional Center in Portageville, and from 7 to 9 pm tomorrow at the National Guard Armory in Dexter.
The MDC is asking waterfowl hunters to provide input on hunting zone boundaries and season structure in Missouri for the next five-year period.
Participants will have the opportunity to review long-term data about weather, migration, habitat use, harvest, and hunter opinions, and discuss their season date and zone preferences with other hunters and local Conservation staff.
Hunter input gathered through the workshops combined with hunter opinion surveys will be used to establish Missouri’s 2026-2030 duck season dates and zones.
SIGN TRUSS REMOVAL WILL CAUSE TEMPORARY OVERNIGHT STOPPAGES ON US 60 AND I-57
U.S. Route 60 in New Madrid County and Interstate 57 in Mississippi County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction beginning tonight.
Officials say that traffic will be stopped for 15-minute intervals as construction crews replace an overhead sign truss.
Work will take place overnight from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. beginning tonight and continuing through Friday, February 14th.
The work zone will be located from Route 62 to Route B near Sikeston.
NEW MADRID COUNTY ROAD CLOSED THIS WEEK FOR BRIDGE MAINTENANCE
Route D in New Madrid County will be closed this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.
The bridge is located from Route 153 to County Road 531 near Parma.
Weather permitting, work will take place from from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily through Thursday.

ROCK THE COUNTRY FESTIVAL STOP IN POPLAR BLUFF CANCELLED
A highly anticipated festival in the Poplar Bluff area will not be happening.
Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce President Steve Halter has confirmed to KWOC News that Rock the Country has cancelled the Poplar Bluff stop for the festival that had been scheduled for May 2nd and 3rd at Brick’s Off Road Park.
Halter added that they understand that ticket sales may not have met expectations so far this year, they firmly believe that the addition of Little Rock as a venue played a significant role in slowing momentum, along with changes to the artist lineup.

BICYCLIST STRUCK BY A VEHICLE ON HIGHWAY B IN BUTLER COUNTY
A bicyclist was struck on Highway B Friday evening in Butler County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a vehicle struck the bicycle at around 6:20 pm, two miles east of Poplar Bluff
The bicyclist, a 57 year old man from Poplar Bluff, suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.
POPLAR BLUFF MAN SENTENCED ON SEXUAL EXPLOITATION CHARGE
A Poplar Bluff man will spend three decades in prison on a sexual exploitation charge.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 46 year old Jason Hicks-Simpson pleaded guilty in October to one felony count of sexual exploitation of a minor.
On Friday, Hicks-Simpson was sentenced to 30 years in prison. The Poplar Bluff Police Department and the FBI investigated the case.
Officials say that he will now be transferred to state court to face charges there.
PIEDMONT MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH
A Piedmont man was injured in a single vehicle crash Friday morning.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the 71 year old man was driving on Highway 34 when his vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned.
The man suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported by ambulance to a Poplar Bluff hospital.
DRUGS AND ALMOST 20 GUNS FOUND DURING TRAFFIC STOP
Two people were taken into custody after a traffic stop turned into a drug bust last week.
According to the Arkansas State Police, a Trooper stopped a vehicle Wednesday evening on US Highway 49 in Greene County.
During a search of the vehicle, troopers found 19 firearms, illegal marijuana, and methamphetamine. One of the firearms, a Ruger .223 rifle, was confirmed stolen from Alabama. A second firearm, a Ruger 22 revolver, had a defaced serial number.
The driver, 51 year old William Cook, of Little River, Alabama, was arrested on felony charges of possession of a defaced firearm, possession of controlled substances, and theft by receiving. He is being held on a $150,000 bond.
The passenger, 54 year old Tracy Riley, of Paragould, is being held on a felony charge of possession of controlled substances. Her bond was set at $25,000.
PB ELEMENTARY STUDENT CONCERTS SET FOR THIS WEEK
Two concerts have been scheduled for this week for elementary students in Poplar Bluff.
School officials say that Oak Grove Elementary will host its Winter Concert at 6:30 p.m. tonight.
O’Neal Elementary will follow with its annual concert program at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 6th.
Both concerts will be held in the E.T. Peters Gym at the Poplar Bluff Middle School.
PAVEMENT REPAIRS SET FOR TODAY ON ROUTE 25 IN DEXTER
Route 25 in Stoddard County will be reduced today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.
The work zone is located from Stoddard Street to Cemetery Road in Dexter.
Weather permitting, work will take place today through 2 p.m.
CREWS TO CLOSE PEMISCOT COUNTY ROAD EARLY THIS WEEK FOR SHOULDER WORK
Route B in Pemiscot County will be closed for the first part of this week so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform shoulder work.
This section of roadway being closed is located from County Road 258 to County Road 254 near Pascola.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. both today and tomorrow.

TWO INJURED, ONE SERIOUSLY, IN CARTER COUNTY CRASH
Two people were injured Wednesday evening in a two vehicle crash near Ellsinore.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 39 year old male from Blodgett was cresting over a hill on US Highway 60 when he struck the rear of a vehicle in front of him. The second vehicle then ran off the roadway.
The man suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken by ambulance to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE TO HOST 3RD ANNUAL SALUTE TO AG DINNER
The 3rd Annual Salute to Ag Dinner is set for Friday, February 7th.
Three Rivers College will host the event beginning at 6 pm at the Westwood Event Center in Poplar Bluff.
The Salute to Ag Dinner is a celebration of farmers, ranchers, families, and industry leaders in Southeast Missouri.
All proceeds will benefit the Three Rivers Aggies Club.

STONER REELECTED TO THE BUTLER COUNTY UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI EXTENSION COUNCIL, TO BE JOINED BY NEWCOMERS MCCORMICK, PARSONS, AND REYNOLDS
There will be three new faces on the University of Missouri Butler County Extension Council.
Incumbent Toni Stoner was reelected to a two year term on the council and will be joined by newcomers Terri McCormick, Tabitha Parsons, and Corey Reynolds.
Voting was held at the Butler County Extension Office and on the Extension website.
ILLINOIS WOMAN SENTENCED TO A DECADE IN PRISON IN CONNECTION TO SOUTHEAST MISSOURI DRUG CHARGE
An Illinois woman will spend the next decade in prison in connection to a Southeast Missouri drug charge.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 49 year old Georgia R. Phillips, of East St. Louis, Illinois, has been sentenced to serve 10 years in federal prison for the offense of possession with intent to distribute cocaine base.
Phillips was pulled over for a traffic violation on Interstate 55 in Pemiscot County last May. During the stop, officers discovered large quantities of controlled substances in her vehicle, including approximately four ounces of crack cocaine.
After being placed under arrest, Phillips admitted she was traveling from East St. Louis to deliver the controlled substances to an individual in Hayti.
After serving the 10-year sentence, Phillips will be placed on a 3-year term of supervised release.
ALMOST MONTH LONG ROAD PROJECT UNDERWAY NEAR DEXTER
Route F in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane for almost a month as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform drainage repairs.
The project will be located from Route 60 to County Road 462 near Dexter.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily through Friday, February 28th.
SHOULDER WORK TO CAUSE DELAYS OVER THE NEXT WEEK IN NEW MADRID COUNTY
Route 62 in New Madrid County will be reduced over the next week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform shoulder work.
The work zone will be located between Route W and Route 153.

OVER TWO INCHES OF RAIN POSSIBLE BEFORE THE END OF THE WEEK IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
A weather system could bring heavy rain to Southeast Missouri today and tomorrow.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a low pressure system will cross the area with the steadiest rain occurring today into tonight.
Areas such as Poplar Bluff, Dexter, and Doniphan could see two to four inches of rainfall as a part of this system.
Weather officials say that locally higher amounts are also possible in Southeast Missouri and that flash flooding issues may occur in areas that see over two inches of rain.

ONE PERSON FOUND DEAD FOLLOWING HOUSE FIRE IN PORTAGEVILLE AREA
One person was found dead while firefighting crews were on the scene of a fire Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Portageville Fire and Rescue Facebook Page, at around 12:30 pm Portageville Fire crews were dispatched to a structure fire on DeLisle Avenue.
Firefighters worked to try to gain entry into the home but were met with extreme conditions and heavy smoke. At that time Mutual aid was called in from nearby agencies.
Once crews were able to make entry into the structure, they located a male subject inside the residence.
The deceased subject has been identified as 54 year old Andrew Lane, of Portageville. According to New Madrid County Sheriff Joey Higgerson, foul play is not suspected at this time.
MEET AND GREET TO BE HELD NEXT WEEK WITH NEW POPLAR BLUFF CITY MANAGER
Poplar Bluff residents will get a chance to meet their new city manager at an event scheduled for next week.
According to city officials, a meet and greet with City Manager Robert Knodell has been scheduled for 5 to 7 pm on Thursday, February 6th at the Black River Coliseum lobby.
Knodell was appointed to the position in December by a unanimous vote of the Poplar Bluff City Council.
He officially began his tenure as City Manager on January 27th.
DEADLINE FOR EARLY REGISTRATION FOR 19th ANNUAL CHILI COOK-OFF IS ALMOST HERE
The deadline for early registration to the Mason-Dixon Chili Society’s 19th annual Chili Cook-Off is almost here.
The event will be held from 11 am to 2 pm on Saturday, February 22nd at the Black River Coliseum. A cook’s party will be held the day before the event.
The participation fee is $100 per booth if you register by February 1st. Late entry will be $125 per booth. Proceeds from the Cook-Off go to benefit the United Gospel Rescue Mission.
Entry will be free to the public the day of the event.

DEXTER POLICE INVESTIGATING FALSE REPORT OF SHOTS BEING FIRED
Police in one Southeast Missouri city are working with their counterparts from another state concerning a false report of shots being fired.
According to the Dexter Police Department, on Tuesday Dexter officers responded to a call regarding shots being fired. After a thorough investigation, it was determined that the report was unfounded and is believed to have been a false report.
Investigators have confirmed that the suspect made the call from out of state and they have contacted authorities in the proper jurisdiction, who are assisting with the case.

MODOT CREWS CLOSING NEW MADRID COUNTY ROAD THIS WEEK TO REPLACE A CULVERT
Route YY in New Madrid County will be closed this week so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can replace a culvert under the roadway.
Officials say that the road will be closed from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily through Friday, weather permitting.
The closure is located from County Road 355 to County Road 375 near Portageville.

Illness has struck another Southeast Missouri school.
Campbell R-2 school officials have announced that school will not be in session today or tomorrow. Both days will be utilized as AMI days.

TWO FLOWN TO CAPE GIRARDEAU HOSPITAL FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH
Two people were flown to an area hospital on Monday following a single vehicle crash in Dunklin County.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the crash happened shortly before 3 pm when a vehicle ran off the side of Highway H and struck a tree.
The driver, an 82 year old male from Campbell, suffered serious injuries in the crash while the passenger, an 82 year old female from Campbell, suffered moderate injuries.
Both were flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital.
EAGLE DAYS PROGRAM SET FOR THIS WEEKEND AT MINGO NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
A day for honoring eagles has been scheduled for this weekend at Mingo National Wildlife Refuge near Puxico.
According to officials, the Wildlife Refuge, the Missouri Department of Conservation, and the Wappapello Lake Army Corps of Engineers will be hosting Eagle Days 2025 on Saturday, February 1st.
There will be live eagle programs at the Puxico Activity Center starting at 9 am.
The Puxico Activity Center is adjacent to Puxico High School, just off Highway 51.
In addition, there will be exhibits and other activities in the Visitor Center and spotting scopes will be set up on several active eagle nests around Mingo, the Duck Creek Conservation Area, and Wappapello Lake.

AREA POLICE DEPARTMENT WARNS RESIDENTS TO WATCH OUT FOR PHONE SCAMS
An area police department wants residents to be on the lookout for scam phone calls.
According to the Rector Police Department, it has been reported to them that fraudulent or scam calls are being made to Rector area residents that appear to be using the Rector Police Department phone number.
Police officials say that they will not contact individuals for personal information over the phone and if you happen to receive one of these calls, do not provide any information.
Call and report any suspicious phone calls to the Rector Police Department at 870-595-2423.

MO Route 114 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane for part of this week so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can replace a culvert under the roadway.
This section of roadway being reduced is located from Route 25 to Park Street in Dexter.
Weather permitting, work will take place today and tomorrow from 7 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day.
SHOULDER WORK TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY IN PEMISCOT COUNTY
Route B in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane with 10-foot width restriction today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform shoulder work.
The section of roadway being reduced is located from County Road 258 to County Road 254 near Pascola.

GATEWOOD MAN CONVICTED OF ASSAULT AND WEAPON CHARGES
A Gatewood man is behind bars following his conviction on multiple charges including assault.
According to Ripley County Prosecuting Attorney Matthew Michel, 41 year old Bryan Grissom was found guilty by a Ripley County jury on Friday of numerous charges, including assault in the first degree, unlawful possession of a firearm, and two counts of armed criminal action.
Grissom was accused of firing a shot at a driver at the intersection of Highway 142 and Highway P in July of 2023.

The victim suffered serious injuries from the shooting but was able to drive to a relative’s residence, where he met EMS and was transported to the hospital for treatment.

TWO IN CUSTODY AFTER MULTIPLE CHILDREN WERE FOUND NEGLECTED IN HOME
Two parents have been placed into custody after nine children had to be removed from a home by authorities.
According to the warrant affidavits, in December the Arkansas Child Abuse Hotline received two separate reports regarding nine children, between the ages of 1 and 12, not being in school, not receiving medical treatment, and not having adequate food.
The children were removed from the home and deemed by the team for children at risk to be at risk for further neglect.
Six of the nine children were diagnosed with child physical neglect. Five were diagnosed with severe malnutrition and one was diagnosed with moderate malnutrition. Three were admitted to ACH for severe protein calorie malnutrition.
The children disclosed that they were often given only white rice to eat and hadn't attended school or been to a doctor or dentist appointment since at least March of 2024.
The parents, 32 year old Michael Harris and 29 year old Beatrice Russ, both of Paragould, have been charged with nine counts of endangering the welfare of a minor in the first degree and five counts of domestic battering in the second degree.
TWIN RIVERS STUDENTS WILL BE IN CLASS NEXT MONDAY TO MAKE UP MISSED DAY
Students at a Southeast Missouri school that has switched to a four day school week will be in class for all five days next week.
The Twin Rivers School District has announced that classes will be held on Monday, February 3rd.
The date is being used as a make-up day for December 10th, when classes were cancelled due to water issues in Fisk.
Twin Rivers has been on a four day school week since 2022, with students being off on Monday.
TRC PATRONS OF THE ARTS TO PRESENT THE PIANO MEN THIS WEEK
The music of Billy Joel and Elton John will fill the Tinnin Fine Arts Center this week.

The ramps from Route 60 to Route 51, near Fisk, will be impacted this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform shoulder work.

BUTLER COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED FOR OVER THREE MONTHS BEGINNING TODAY
A portion of Route B in Butler County will be closed beginning today so contractor crews can replace the bridge over Blue Spring Slough.
The closure will be located between Route Z and County Road 557 near Poplar Bluff.
Weather permitting, work on the project will continue through Wednesday, May 7. The road will remain closed as work is underway, and motorists should seek alternate routes.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI TOWN AWARDED ALMOST HALF A MILLION DOLLAR GRANT
A southeast Missouri town has been awarded almost half a million dollars for street repairs and paving.
The City of Hornersville has received $496,500 from the Missouri Department of Economic Development Community Development Block Grant.
City officials say they intend to start later this summer, but residents will have newly repaired and paved streets by the end of the year.
The city will be contributing $100,000 cash toward the implementation of this project.
REGISTRATION OPENS FOR THE 2025 OPTIMIST SOCCER LEAGUE IN POPLAR BLUFF
Registration is now open for the 2025 Poplar Bluff Optimist Soccer League.
Registration for youth in kindergarten through sixth grades will be open through February 21st and the registration fee is $25.

Kennett city officials are reminding area landlords that their rental properties need to be registered.
Kennettt Fire Chief Lance Davis tells KWOC News that landlords in Kennett are required to register all rental properties and obtain a business license.
Davis added that in the near future, the city will begin sending out notices of violation and if properties are not registered as required, tickets will be issued.
Landlords can register their properties at City Hall on Cedar Street.

POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS RECOGNIZED BY PATRICK MAHOMES FOR PARTICIPATING IN READING CHALLENGE
Some area students have been recognized by a Super Bowl champion for their efforts in reading.
Poplar Bluff High School students of Jeanette Miller’s class were chosen to receive a reward from Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs for participating in his organization's reading challenge.
The students received individual gift bags containing a trading card, water bottle and pencil from the 15 and Mahomes Foundation last month through the ‘Read for 15 Challenge,’ along with a personalized note from the quarterback.
According to school officials, the class has committed to reading for 15 minutes a day since the beginning of the school year, logging their time on a chart.
RECTOR MAN IN CUSTODY ON 200 COUNTS RELATED TO CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE MATERIALS
A Rector man is behind bars following his arrest in connection to the discovery of child sexual abuse material.
According to Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin, earlier this week, special agents from the Special Investigations Division arrested 36 year old Joseph Parrish following an undercover investigation of an online peer-to-peer file sharing system.
The Arkansas State Police and Clay County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the execution of the search warrant that led to the arrest.
Parrish is charged with 100 counts of distributing, possessing, or viewing of matter depicting sexually explicit conduct involving a child as well as an additional 100 counts of pandering or possessing visual or print medium depicting sexually explicit conduct involving a child.
He was booked into the Clay County Detention Center.
STUDENT FACING MULTIPLE CHARGES FOLLOWING INCIDENT AT POCAHONTAS HIGH SCHOOL
A student was taken into custody earlier this week following an incident at Pocahontas High School.
According to an incident report from the Pocahontas Police Department, shortly after 1 pm on January 21st, a school resource officer was called to the PHS office. When he arrived, the officer approached 18 year old Trae Harris and after a conversation attempted to detain him for public intoxication.
The incident report says that Harris leaned into the officer, who felt his sidearm weighted down by Harris's right arm while it was holstered, indicating to the officer that Harris was attempting to pull his sidearm from the holster. Harris was pushed away and then taken to the ground.
After Harris was put into wrist restraints, officers rolled him onto his side and assisted him to the sitting position. The officer noticed a bulge in a pants pocket as he patted Harris down. When he reached to retrieve the item from Harris's pocket, Harris lunged forward, attempting to bite the officer's arm.
At this time, school officials notified Jr. High and High School classes to go into a classroom hold for other students' safety and privacy of Harris.
Harris was transported to the Randolph County Detention Center on charges of aggravated assault and public intoxication.

A Doniphan man is facing up to three decades in prison following his conviction on a sexual exploitation charge.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 52 year old Rayford Evans, of Doniphan, was found guilty Tuesday of attempted sexual exploitation of a minor.
Evans is accused of using his cell phone to record a juvenile who was in a bathroom.

Widespread illness has forced the cancellation of classes at one Southeast Missouri school.
According to a post on the Clarkton Reindeer facebook page, Clarkton Schools have been cancelled for the rest of this week due to very low numbers of students and teachers on campus and the rise of sickness.
For this week, students will work on AMI work and should check Google Classroom.

The Dexter Rotary Club is hosting a Chili Day today.
The event is scheduled for 11 am to 6 pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dexter. In addition to chili, there will also be soup, drinks, and desserts.
The cost is $10 and tickets can be purchased at the door or the Dexter Chamber of Commerce Office.
Proceeds from the event will go to multiple area charities, including Harty House, Stoddard County Gospel Mission, Rotary Scholarships, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON METH DELIVERY CHARGE
A Poplar Bluff woman was taken into custody earlier this week in Wayne County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 66 year old Theresa Bentley was arrested Tuesday afternoon on a felony charge of delivery of a controlled substance - methamphetamine.
Following the arrest, Bentley was held at the Wayne County Jail.

Salyards is also facing a charge of felony fleeing.
TAX SEASON TO BEGIN ON JANUARY 27TH
We are less than a week away from the beginning of tax season.
The Internal Revenue Service has announced that Monday, January 27th is the official start date of the nation's 2025 tax season when the agency will begin accepting and processing 2024 tax returns.
The IRS expects more than 140 million individual tax returns to be filed by the April 15th tax deadline.
Officials say that although the IRS will not officially begin accepting and processing tax returns until January 27th, people do not need to wait until then to work on their taxes if they're using software companies or tax professionals.
Area organizations will be holding a tax clinic beginning next month in Butler County.
The RSVP tax clinic by AmeriCorps Senior, AARP, the Butler County Community Resource Council, and Poplar Bluff Housing Authority, will be held at the Twin Towers on Hazel Street beginning February 4th for people who are 65 and older or 100 percent disabled.

TRIBUTE TO FALLEN VIETNAM WAR HEROES TO BE AVAILABLE THIS SPRING IN NEW MADRID
A traveling tribute to soldiers from the Vietnam War will be available to view this spring in New Madrid.
The New Madrid County Memorial VFW Post 7183 has announced that the Vietnam Traveling Wall will be on display at 1102 Scott Street in New Madrid from April 30th to May 3rd.
Veterans, families, and the community will have the chance to pay their respects and remember those who served and sacrificed during the Vietnam War.
The Wall will be open to the public 24 hours a day during its time in New Madrid. Volunteers will be on hand to assist visitors and provide information.
FAFSA DAY EVENT SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND AT THREE RIVERS COLLEGE
An event has been scheduled for this weekend in Poplar Bluff to help students and their families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
FAFSA Day is scheduled for 9 am to noon on Saturday at the Westover Administration Building on the campus of Three Rivers College.
Officials say that students will be able to get expert support to complete the FAFSA and ensure they do not miss out on financial aid opportunities.
In Missouri, if students want priority consideration they need to submit their application by February 3rd. Applications are accepted through April 1st.
MISSOURI FIFTH GRADERS ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL POSTER CONTEST
Students across Missouri are invited to participate in the 2025 National Missing Children’s Day Poster Contest.
As a part of the contest, Missouri fifth grade students can create eight and a half by 14 inch posters that reflect the 2025 contest theme, “Bringing Our Missing Children Home.”
Entries must be submitted by January 24th to the Missouri Department of Public Safety. One Missouri student will be given an overall first place award, and will then be automatically entered in the national competition.

DONALD TRUMP INAUGURATED AS 47TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
Donald Trump has begun his second term as President of the United States of America.
President Trump took the oath of office on Monday inside the Capital Rotunda. The event had been moved indoors from the National Mall due to intense cold weather in the Washington D.C. area.
The swearing-in was last moved indoors in 1985, when President Ronald Reagan began his second term.
DONALD TRUMP INAUGURATED AS 47TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
Donald Trump has begun his second term as President of the United States of America.
President Trump took the oath of office on Monday inside the Capital Rotunda. The event had been moved indoors from the National Mall due to intense cold weather in the Washington D.C. area.
The swearing-in was last moved indoors in 1985, when President Ronald Reagan began his second term.
Trump is the first president to serve two non-consecutive terms since Grover Cleveland who was the 22nd and 24th president in the late 1800’s.
WARMING CENTERS OPEN TO HELP RESIDENTS OUT OF THE COLD
Warming centers are available to help area residents get out of the cold during the day and at night.
According to the National Weather Service, bitterly cold temperatures and wind chills will continue through Wednesday.
In Poplar Bluff, temperatures are expected to bottom out at around 10 degrees with wind chill values getting close to zero.
In Butler County, the Bread Shed will be acting as an overnight warming center from 7 pm to 7 am when the temperatures get below 20 degrees.
The Butler County Health Department and Poplar Bluff Library will serve as warming centers during the daytime hours.
The United Gospel Rescue Mission in Poplar Bluff is also open for men who need a place to stay during the cold weather.

DOG RESCUED FROM STEEL TRAP IN RIPLEY COUNTY
Ripley County authorities worked together last week to save a puppy in the Doniphan area .
According to the Ripley County Sheriff’s Department, Friday afternoon a dog was found in a muddy creek stuck in a steel trap.
The deputy says that the dog never showed aggression towards his three rescuers as they pried the steel jaws off of him.
Officials from the Ripley County Sheriff’s Department, Doniphan Police Department, and Doniphan Fire Department assisted with the rescue.
Authorities say the dog did not seem to be injured and has been returned to the owner.
DEER HARVEST NUMBERS DOWN IN 2024
Deer harvest numbers were down last year in Missouri.
According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, Missouri's 2024-2025 deer-hunting season ended January 15th with a preliminary total deer harvest for the season of 276,262.
Of the deer harvested, 129,252 were antlered bucks, 23,842 were button bucks, and 123,168 were does.
Hunters harvested 326,448 deer during the 2023-2024 deer hunting season.
MAN TO APPEAR IN COURT NEXT MONTH IN CONNECTION TO ALLEGED ASSAULT IN WAYNE COUNTY
A Wappapello man is scheduled to appear in court next month in connection to an alleged assault.
According to a probable cause affidavit, on January 13th a Wayne County deputy was dispatched following a report from a woman that her neighbor had attacked her and that she was bleeding.
The victim told the deputy that 65 year old Robert Schuenemeyer had grabbed her and pushed her while holding a knife in his hand. Schuenemeyer also allegedly told the victim that he was going to kill her.
The victim was able to escape and contact authorities. She suffered a laceration approximately two inches in length under her chin and refused to seek medical attention.
The deputy was able to locate the knife inside Schuenemeyer’s camper.
Schuenemeyer was taken into custody and has been charged with felony 1st degree assault and armed criminal action. He is scheduled to appear in a Wayne County courtroom on February 11th for a preliminary hearing.
MODOT CREWS TO CLOSE NEW MADRID COUNTY ROAD THIS WEEK FOR CULVERT REPLACEMENT
Route YY in New Madrid County will be closed this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.
The closure is located from County Road 355 to County Road 375.
Weather permitting, work will take place today through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.

Many students competed in a variety of categories at the Missouri Junior and Elementary Beta convention in Branson.
One student who stood out was 7th Grader Brooklyn Bader, from St. Teresa Catholic School in Glennonville, who was elected the Missouri Junior Beta President.

FRIGID COLD TEMPERATURES TO START YOUR WEEK
Arctic air is pushing dangerously cold temperatures to our area for the early part of this week.
According to the National Weather Service, minimum wind chill values are expected to be below 20 degrees and in some cases, below 10 degrees, through Wednesday in Poplar Bluff.
Officials say that temperatures will begin to moderate back toward normal values after Wednesday.

POPLAR BLUFF VOTERS TO DECIDE ON BOND ISSUE FOR PB SCHOOLS IN APRIL
Voters in the Poplar Bluff area will be asked about a bond issue at the upcoming election in April.
According to Poplar Bluff School officials, the R-I Board of Education voted to place a no-tax bond issue on the April 8 ballot, estimated to generate $11.5 million dollars.
The 20-year general obligation bonds would be issued to extend the 18-cent debt service previously approved by voters in 2009 to construct the Kindergarten Center and perform extensive renovations at Junior High including electric, plumbing, and heating and air.
Officials say that if the issue is approved, the school would have the opportunity to expand its building capacity at Early Childhood, enhance safety district-wide, and address deferred maintenance including the construction of a new bus garage, all at zero increased cost to taxpayers.
While the April ballot issue focuses on the most pressing needs, the long-range plan will be designed to look ahead to the next decade, a process expected to wrap up in the fall. A larger citizens' advisory committee representing a diverse cross-section of patrons will meet next month to help guide the district in prioritizing future projects to focus on.
CITY OF POPLAR BLUFF AWARDED ALMOST TWO MILLION DOLLARS FOR TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE
The city of Poplar Bluff will be getting almost two million dollars for infrastructure improvements.
According to the Delta Regional Authority, Poplar Bluff has been awarded $1.9 million dollars to make improvements to the transportation infrastructure within the Industrial Park, ensuring safer and reliable roadways for employees and freight trucks accessing the five manufacturing companies within the park, while also attracting news businesses to the park.
The money comes from the Public Works and Economic Adjustment Assistance program, a partnership program between the Delta Regional Authority and the U.S. Economic Development Administration.
DEXTER MAN DEAD FOLLOWING HEAD ON COLLISION IN STODDARD COUNTY
A Dexter man has died from injuries he received in a two vehicle crash on Thursday.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly after noon on Thursday when a 27 year old male from Dexter crossed the center line of Stoddard County Road 413 and struck another vehicle head on.
The driver of the first vehicle was transported to a St. Louis hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the second vehicle was flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital with serious injuries.
VOLLEYBALL COACH NAMED TRC RAIDER OF THE YEAR
A former Volleyball player for Three Rivers College has been named the 2025 Raider of the Year.
Branson High School and former Winona High School volleyball coach Francie Spurgin McBride will receive the honor at the 2025 TRC Alumni Reunion on February 1st at the Libla Family Sports Complex.
The Raider of the Year Award is presented to a former Three Rivers athlete who has succeeded beyond their sport and time at Three Rivers.
Spurgin McBride graduated from Eminence High School in 1992, where she helped the 1991 team reach the state quarterfinals. She then played volleyball for two years at Three Rivers before transferring to Evangel University.
After college, Spurgin McBride worked at Eminence as the assistant volleyball coach. She then moved to Winona, where she won five Class 1 state championships, including three in a row from 2012-14. The Wildcats reached 14 final fours and finished second four times, third twice, and fourth three times.
Spurgin McBride completed her fifth season as the Branson High School volleyball coach in 2024. In 2020, Branson won its first district championship since 1992 and reached the state quarterfinals. She was inducted to the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2020.
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY EVENT SCHEDULED FOR TODAY AT OLD WHEATLEY SCHOOL IN POPLAR BLUFF
A special event has been scheduled for today in Poplar Bluff to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The community is being invited to attend the event, which will begin at 11 am at the Old Wheatley School located at 921 Garfield Street.
The Poplar Bluff R-1 JROTC will be presenting the colors to kick off the celebration and the guest speaker will be Poplar Bluff High School football great Eddie Moss.
Refreshments will be served following the program.
Numerous governmental offices will also be closed today in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Poplar Bluff city officials say that both the city hall and municipal court will be closed today.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol also announced that driver examination stations throughout the state will be closed for the holiday.

TIPS FOR GOING OUTSIDE IN COLDER WEATHER
With much colder temperatures arriving this weekend, the CDC is reminding people to be safe if they have to go outside.
Officials say that you should try to stay indoors during extremely cold weather and any trips that you do make outside should be as brief as possible.
If you do go outside, you should try to wear several layers of loose-fitting clothing, a hat, a scarf or knit mask to cover face and mouth, sleeves that are snug at the wrist, and mittens or gloves.
Also do your best to stay dry, as wet clothing chills the body quickly.
Make sure to watch for hypothermia as well. In adults, warning signs of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion or feeling very tired, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech, and drowsiness. In babies, signs include bright red, cold skin, and very low energy.

ONE DEAD, TWO INJURED, IN CRASH ON US HIGHWAY 62
An Illinois resident has died in connection to a crash early Thursday morning on US Highway 62 in Southeast Missouri.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash happened shortly before 5 am, six miles east of Charleston, when a vehicle crossed the center line and struck another vehicle head on.
The driver of the second vehicle, identified as a 39 year old man from Vienna, Illinois, was killed in the crash.
The driver in the first vehicle and a passenger in the second vehicle were both flown to area hospitals with serious injuries.
MAN CAUGHT WITH MACHINE GUN AND METH IN KENNETT SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS IN PRISON
An Oklahoma man has been sentenced to a decade in prison after being found with a machine gun and meth in Southeast Missouri.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office, On August 16, 2022, officers with the United States Marshals Service, the Dunklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Southeast Missouri Drug Task Force located 36 year old Darius Clark, of Oklahoma City, at a home in Kennett.
Clark had two backpacks at the time of his arrest. One contained a Glock .40-caliber pistol that had been equipped with a selector switch that converted it into a fully automatic weapon. The second backpack contained 84 multicolored tablets containing methamphetamine and 17 tablets containing a mix of meth and other controlled substances.
Clark pleaded guilty in September to one count of possession of a machine gun. On Thursday, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Officials say that Clark’s arrest warrant was triggered by charges of first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon in Oklahoma City two weeks before his arrest. Clark will now be returned to Oklahoma.
KENNETT AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING DISCOVERY OF DECEASED DOGS
Authorities in Kennett are investigating a discovery of deceased dogs that were found on the side of the road.
According to the Kennett Humane Department, last week a Humane Officer encountered two bags while en route to work.
A deceased puppy was found in each of the bags. Officials say that it is unclear whether the puppies died in the bag or were discarded roadside after their death. Following an examination, no physical cause of death was apparent, as the puppies' weights were normal and no visible injuries were observed.

BUTLER COUNTY EMS DONATES AMBULANCE TO THREE RIVERS COLLEGE
Emergency Medical Services students at Three Rivers College will have new equipment to help their studies thanks to a donation from an area business.
According to school officials, Three Rivers College recently received an ambulance donation from Butler County EMS to aid current and future students.
The ambulance, a 2017 Ford Transit-250, will be stocked and ready for spring 2025 students taking Emergency Medical Services classes related to Paramedic, EMT, Fire Science, and other emergency classes at Three Rivers.
The college will also have the ambulance wrapped in a design unique to the College to distinguish it as a training vehicle.
Butler County EMS Director David Ross says that “Butler County EMS is excited to partner with TRC to provide equipment that can improve training and quality of the EMS program graduates.”
THREE DAY BLOOD DRIVE BEGINS TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF
The American Red Cross is in desperate need of blood donors and will be starting a three day blood drive today in Poplar Bluff.
A Blood Drive will be set up from 1 to 6 pm both today and Friday at the American Legion Post 153 on Kanell Boulevard. Donations will also be taken at the site from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm on Saturday.
According to the Red Cross, the recent winter weather has caused the cancelation of more than 300 blood drives and the loss of over 8000 units of blood collected.

A Harviell man is scheduled to be in court on Thursday in connection to a stabbing incident from over the weekend.
According to Missouri Case Net, 38 year old Joshua Scowden has been charged with assault 1st degree, domestic assault 1st degree, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Scowden is accused of stabbing a victim several times following a verbal confrontation on Saturday. The victim was flown to an area hospital for treatment of the injuries.

RECIPIENT OF 2025 THREE RIVERS COLLEGE ALUMNI STAR AWARD ANNOUNCED
The Butler County Emergency Management Director has been chosen as the recipient of the 2025 Three Rivers College Alumni Star Award.
Robbie Myers will be honored at the TRC Alumni Reunion festivities on February 1st, including a reception that day.
The Alumni Star Award was created to showcase those who got their start at TRC. Recipients are chosen based on their civic and professional involvement, and their lasting connection to TRC.
Myers first attended Three Rivers College 40 years ago and served as Student Senate President while completing his associate degree. He later became the first Three Rivers graduate to serve as a Vice President at the College.
Since his time as a student at Three Rivers, Myers has dedicated his career to public service. His various roles include serving as Butler County Commissioner for 12 years and as Trustee on the Butler County Health Department Board.
His appointed positions include serving as Vice President at Three Rivers College and, for the past 10 years, his current position as the Butler County Emergency Management Director.
The reception for Myers will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 1, in the Tinnin Fine Arts Center on the Poplar Bluff Campus, with the award presentation taking place at 2:30 p.m.
SIX YEAR CHILD HIT BY A VEHICLE IN SCOTT COUNTY
A six year old child was hit by a vehicle Monday in Scott County.
According to a report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a driver was attempting to stop on US Highway 61, half a mile south of Morley, when the vehicle began sliding and struck the child.
The victim was flown to a St. Louis hospital with serious injuries.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 pm at a bus stop.
Scott County Central Superintendent Brian Hukel says that in the days to come, the district will be providing additional counseling and support for all staff and students.
MAN ARRESTED ON CHARGE OF SECOND DEGREE SEXUAL ASSAULT
A man is in custody on a charge of second degree sexual assault.
According to a warrant affidavit, in December, the Arkansas Child Abuse Hotline received a report in reference to a juvenile female who had made a disclosure of sexual abuse.
During an interview, the victim disclosed acts that would constitute sexual assault in the second degree and named 48 year old Harold Allen, of Paragould, as the offender.
The affidavit says that Allen is a registered sex offender who was previously convicted for similar allegations.
On Tuesday, Allen was booked into the Greene County Detention Center on a $25,000 bond.
CULVERT REPLACEMENT TO CAUSE TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF BUTLER COUNTY ROAD TOMORROW

TRAIN STRIKES CAR IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS, ONE PERSON DEAD
One man is dead after a train struck a vehicle Sunday afternoon in Northeast Arkansas.
According to the Arkansas State Police, 82 year old David Smith, of Paragould, was driving on Greene County Road 434 when he failed to yield to an oncoming train and was struck on the passenger side of his vehicle.
Officials say that Smith was killed in the collision, which occurred near the county road’s intersection with US Highway 49.
TRAIN STRIKES CAR IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS, ONE PERSON DEAD

NO ONE HURT AFTER VEHICLE CRASHES INTO AREA RESTAURANT
No injuries have been reported after a vehicle crashed into an area business over the weekend.
Jeralyn Taylor Goodman, the owner of Taylor’s Stateline Travel Center and Longhorn Grill tells KWOC News that shortly before 1 pm on Saturday a truck crashed into the dining portion of the Longhorn Grill.
According to Goodman, the driver had suffered a medical incident in the parking lot and accidentally accelerated into the building.
The restaurant was only shut down for a few hours before service resumed later Saturday afternoon.
Goodman says she is thankful that there was nobody hurt during the incident. She added that it will be a few weeks before everything is fixed, however they will remain open while repairs are underway.
KEHOE SWORN IN AS MISSOURI’S 58TH GOVERNOR
Mike Kehoe is now officially the Governor of Missouri.
Kehoe was sworn in as the state’s 58th Governor at a ceremony at the Missouri State Capitol on Monday.
During his inaugural address, Kehoe outlined his administration’s goal to tackle the most pressing challenges and seize the opportunities for growth, with a focus on public safety, education, economic development, and agriculture.
Governor Kehoe was sworn in by former U.S. Senator Roy Blunt, using a Bible that belonged to his mother, Lorriane Kehoe.
Lieutenant Governor David Wasinger, Secretary of State Denny Hoskins, State Treasurer Vivek Malek, and Attorney General Andrew Bailey were also sworn in during the inauguration ceremony.
POPLAR BLUFF CHEERLEADING KIDDIE CAMP TO NOW BEGIN ON WEDNESDAY
A Poplar Bluff Cheerleading Kiddie Camp for future cheerleaders ages 3 to 6th grade will now begin on Wednesday.
According to officials, the camp was originally scheduled to begin on Monday, however it had to be pushed back due to the weather.
The camp will now be held at the Poplar Bluff High School Auxiliary gym on Wednesday and the cost is $25 per child.
Registration will begin for children 3 years old to 1st grade at 5 pm, with the clinic being from 5:30 to 6:30.
Registration for 2nd through 6th graders will start at 6:15, with the clinic following from 6:30 to 7:30.
All Kiddie Camp Cheerleaders will then perform at the PBHS Basketball games on Thursday, January 16th.
DEXTER ROTARY CLUB TO HOST CHILI DAY ON JANUARY 23
The Dexter Rotary Club is hosting a Chili Day this month.
The event is scheduled for 11 am to 6 pm on January 23rd at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dexter. In addition to chili, there will also be soup, drinks, and deserts.
The cost is $10 and tickets can be purchased at the door or the Dexter Chamber of Commerce Office.
Proceeds from the event will go to multiple area charities, including Harty House, Stoddard County Gospel Mission, Rotary Scholarships, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
RIPLEY COUNTY PUBLIC HOUSING AGENCY SCHEDULES PUBLIC MEETING FOR EARLY MARCH
The public will have the opportunity to find out more information about the future of the Ripley County Public Housing Agency in March.
The agency will host a public hearing to share and discuss its Annual Plan, 5 Year Plan, and MTW supplement beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 4.
The hearing will be held at the Ozark Foothills Regional Planning Commission on Fair Street in Poplar Bluff.
Citizens can obtain a copy of the plan by calling 573-785-6402 and officials say that public comments are encouraged.

KENNETT MAN SCHEDULED TO APPEAR IN COURT THIS WEEK ON CHILD MOLESTATION CHARGES
An area man is scheduled to appear in court this week on multiple child molestation charges.
According to authorities, 41 year old Ryan Cuff, of Kennett, was arrested earlier this month on several charges, including two counts of child molestation - 1st degree, along with single counts of statutory sodomy and furnishing pornographic material to a minor.
Cuff was arrested by the Dunklin County Sheriff’s Department and held on a $150,000 cash only bond.

MALDEN MAN KILLED IN SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH NEAR DEXTER
A Malden man has died from injuries he received in a single vehicle crash Friday night.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the 25 year old male driver was travelling on Route H, ten miles southwest of Dexter, when his vehicle failed to negotiate a curve, ran off the left side of the roadway, and overturned multiple times.
The driver was ejected during the wreck and later pronounced dead at the scene by Stoddard County Coroner Brent Stidham.
US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS ACCEPTING CHRISTMAS TREES FOR RECYCLING
If you are still wondering what to do with your Christmas tree, the US Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake would like to hear from you.
The Corps of Engineers is accepting Christmas trees through January 17th at the Redman Creek boat ramp. The drop-off location is marked with a sign.
Officials say that once the trees are deposited at the collection site, they become property of the Corps of Engineers for use in establishing fish shelters and small game habitats.

CONTRACT AWARDED FOR PAVEMENT IMPROVEMENTS IN BUTLER COUNTY
The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission has awarded contracts for various road projects in Southeast Missouri.
According to officials, an over 2.5 million dollar contract was awarded to Pace Construction Company, for pavement improvements on Route 158 and Route 142 in Butler County.
An over 1.7 million dollar contract was awarded to James H. Drew Corporation for sign replacements on major routes throughout Southeast Missouri.
Additional information about the projects, including a timeline and what impacts there will be to traffic, will be released prior to the start of construction.
MOTORISTS ASKED TO WATCH FOR SIGNS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING
January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, which is dedicated to educating the traveling public on human trafficking, what to look for, and what everyone can do to help stop it.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol say that motorists are often the first line of defense against human trafficking.
Signs of human trafficking are not always obvious, and may include:
Signs of psychological coercion, such as depression, anxiety, and/or an overly submissive attitude; Lack of control over his/her schedule, money, and/or items proving identification;
Coached/rehearsed responses to questions.

DRAINAGE REPAIR PROJECT UNDERWAY IN STODDARD COUNTY
Route ZZ in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform drainage repairs.
The work zone is located near Dexter between County Roads 642 and 659.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily through Friday.

KWOC News spoke with Rachel Travino, Meteorologist with the National Weather Service, who told us more about how much snow we can expect.
“We are expecting snowfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches, with the highest amounts most likely closer to the Missouri/Arkansas and Kentucky/Tennessee borders. With temperatures near or below freezing through the entire event, snow will accumulate quickly. This means we will have slick roads, and everyone needs to slow down if they have to travel, and leave lots of space between yourself and the vehicle in front of you.”
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI RESIDENTS URGED TO USE CAUTION IF DRIVING DURING WINTER WEATHER
Southeast Missouri residents are being advised to use caution if they are getting out on the roadways today during the winter weather.
According to the National Weather Service, over an inch of snow blanketed much of Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas early this morning, with more expected throughout the day today.
If you must travel while snow is covering the roadways, make sure to have a full tank of gas, extra blankets and gloves, as well as provisions like water and snacks in the event of an emergency. Keep your cellphone charged, but do not use it while driving.
While driving, remember to buckle up, give yourself plenty of extra time to get to your destination, and remember to give snowplows room to work. Don’t tailgate or attempt to pass them. In the event of a crash, stay buckled inside your vehicle until help arrives.

FIVE NAMED TO THE THREE RIVERS COLLEGE ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
Five new inductees have been named to the Three Rivers College Athletic Hall of Fame.
According to college officials, Sunday Adebayo, Dave Jarvis, Moon McCrary, Wilbur Thornton, and Laverne Turner have been chosen as the 2025 inductees.
The college will host a banquet honoring the inductees on January 31st at the Westwood Center in Poplar Bluff.
Located in the Libla Family Sports Complex, the Hall of Fame will be open for viewing during the TRC basketball games at the annual Alumni Reunion on February 1.
POPLAR BLUFF CHEERLEADING KIDDIE CAMP SCHEDULED FOR THIS MONTH
A Poplar Bluff Cheerleading Kiddie Camp for future cheerleaders ages 3 to 6th grade is set for this month.
The camp is scheduled to be held at the Poplar Bluff High School Auxiliary gym from 5 to 7:30 pm on January 13th and 15th. Registration will begin at 5 pm on the 13th.
The cost is $35 per child and will include a T-shirt.
All Kiddie Camp Cheerleaders will then perform at the PBHS Basketball games on Thursday, January 16th.
OVER 10,000 DEER HARVESTED DURING ALTERNATIVE METHODS PORTION OF DEER SEASON
Over 10,000 deer were harvested during the alternative methods portion of firearm deer season.
Preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation shows that deer hunters in Missouri harvested 10,071 deer during the alternative methods portion from December 28th through January 7th.
Of the deer harvested, 2,765 were antlered bucks, 1,072 were button bucks, and 6,234 were does.
Last year’s alternative methods portion harvest total was 12,496.

MAN CHARGED IN CONNECTION TO BURGLARIES IN THE PARMA AREA
A man is facing charges in connection to multiple burglaries in the Parma area.
According to New Madrid County Sheriff Joey Higgerson, on the afternoon of January 2nd, deputies responded to a reported burglary in the Parma area.
After an investigation, Telvin Hill, of Parma, was found at a nearby home and arrested.
Hill had several items of jewelry in his possession that were stolen from the victim’s home and more stolen property was found at another home in Parma. Based on the items found, deputies were able to identify a second victim who was unaware her home had been burglarized.
Officials believe Hill may have been targeting vacant houses and homes with elderly residents.
Hill has been charged with both burglaries and is being held without bond. Higgerson says they have more unidentified jewelry that may have been stolen from an unknown victim.
