SNOW LIKELY TO START LATE TONIGHT, REGION COULD SEE UP TO FIVE INCHES
An early January snowfall is expected to blanket the region late tonight.
According to the National Weather Service, accumulating snowfall is likely across the entire region with impacts to travel expected. Snowfall totals could range from one to five inches, with higher totals expected in our southern regions.
The snow is forecast to start sometime between midnight and 6 am tomorrow morning. A winter storm warning will be in effect for most of the region beginning at midnight tonight.

WOMAN IN CUSTODY ON ONE MILLION DOLLAR BOND AFTER INFANT TESTS POSITIVE FOR METH
A woman is in custody after an infant tested positive for methamphetamine.
According to a warrant affidavit, 30 year old Amber Ragland, of Paragould, was arrested this week in connection to an ongoing department of Human Services case involving an infant that had tested positive for methamphetamine.
Medical records were obtained showing that the infant victim, who resides with Ragland, had tested positive for methamphetamine both in a urine screen and a hair follicle test. The affidavit says that the hair follicle test is consistent with sustained exposure environmentally over a period of months.
A separate party corroborated methamphetamine usage in the residence.
Ragland has been charged with felony introduction of a controlled substance into the body of another person and endangering the welfare of a minor.
She is being held in the Greene County Detention Center on a one million dollar bond.
BUTLER COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED FOR OVER THREE MONTHS BEGINNING LATER THIS MONTH
Route B in Butler County will be closed beginning later this month so contractor crews can replace the bridge over Blue Spring Slough.
The closure will be located between Route Z and County Road 557 near Poplar Bluff.
Weather permitting, work will begin Monday, Jan. 27 with completion anticipated by Wednesday, May 7. The road will remain closed as work is underway, and motorists should seek alternate routes.
DEADLINE APPROACHING TO REGISTER FOR SPRING CLASSES AT THREE RIVERS COLLEGE
The deadline is approaching to get registered for Spring semester classes at Three Rivers College.
Registration is open for the Spring semester through Friday, January 10th. The first day for classes will be next Monday, January 13th.

MANY GOVERNMENTAL OFFICES TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING
Many governmental offices will be closed today in observance of the National Day of Mourning for former president Jimmy Carter, who died on December 29th at the age of 100.
President Joe Biden has appointed today as a National Day of Mourning to pay homage to the memory of President Carter, who redefined life after the White House as a global humanitarian.
In observance of today, most federal departments and agencies will be closed as will the US Postal Service. USPS officials say that while regular mail service is suspended, there will still be limited package delivery service.
The city of Poplar Bluff has also announced that city offices will be closed today, however Municipal Court will be in session.
BRIDGE MAINTENANCE PROJECT SET FOR TODAY ON INTERSTATE 55
Interstate 55 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.
The bridge is located between mile markers 60 and 58.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.

A proposed change to a major road in Poplar Bluff has been scaled back.
KWOC News spoke with MoDOT Southeast District Project Manager Curt Woolsey who told us that the proposed “Road Diet” for Business 60/Pine Street will now only include the area east of the Black River.
The original plan would have reconfigured Business 60 in Poplar Bluff from an undivided 4 lane to a 3 lane with one eastbound lane, a center turn lane and one westbound lane from 10th Street to Route B.

CHANCES OF SNOW FOR LATE THIS WEEK IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
Winter weather is back in the forecast for this week in Southeast Missouri.
According to a hazardous weather outlook from the National Weather Service, a winter system will bring a period of light snow to portions of the region Thursday night into Friday.
The greater chances of snow accumulation are in the southern portion of our region. At this time, snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches are expected.
CLOSURES PLANNED FOR MINGO NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE FOR FERAL HOG CONTROL
Mingo National Wildlife Refuge will be closed for a number of days this month for animal control.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Inspection and Health Service will be conducting a multiple-day aerial operation to control feral hogs on the Wildlife Refuge from January 16th through January 22nd.
This management action will involve a helicopter flying over the refuge with personnel targeting and shooting feral hogs. For public safety, the entire refuge will be closed to public entry intermittently, with all roads entering the refuge closed.
This closure includes all access to the refuge including vehicle, foot, bicycle, and horseback.

MAN IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING MULTISTATE PURSUIT
A man is in custody following a multistate pursuit on Tuesday.
According to Greene County Sheriff Brad Snyder, shortly after 1 pm, Paragould Emergency Services was notified that Dunklin County was in pursuit of a white Jeep Compass and it had entered Greene County from the Clay County line on Highway 139 near Mounds.
Dispatch was advised that the driver was wanted for multiple felony warrants, including felony fleeing. The vehicle was spotted by a Paragould Police Department Unit and began following the suspect.
The suspect was eventually apprehended without incident at a stoplight in Paragould.
The suspect, 50 year old Joel Hancock, of Kennett, is being held at the Greene County Detention Center pending an extradition hearing.
BERNIE AND HAYTI BUSINESSES PENALIZED BY EPA FOR LEAD BASED PAINT VIOLATIONS
Two companies in Southeast Missouri will have to pay penalties for alleged violations of the federal Toxic Substances Control Act.
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, DSH Legacy LLC in Hayti and Nygard Construction LLC, in Bernie, along with two St. Louis based companies have agreed to collectively pay over $27,000 in penalties for failing to comply with regulations that reduce the hazards of lead-based paint exposure during renovations.
EPA officials say that each of these companies performed renovations on properties built prior to 1978 without obtaining renovator certification from EPA, as required by federal law.
Other violations included failure to retain and produce required records and failure to follow lead-safe work practices during renovations.
BRIDGE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN FISK AREA
Route 51 in Stoddard and Butler Counties will be reduced today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.
The section of roadway affected is located from Route 60 in Stoddard County to Dale Street in Fisk.

WARMING CENTERS OPEN IN BUTLER COUNTY TO PROVIDE SHELTER FROM THE COLD
An arctic chill is crossing our area this week dropping temperatures below freezing and wind chills into the single digits.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, an extended period of sub-freezing conditions is expected through at least Thursday. The most impactful conditions are expected Tuesday night, when wind chill values will be in the single digits for many in our listening area.
In Butler County, the Bread Shed will be acting as an overnight warming center from 7 pm to 7 am this week when the temperatures get below 20 degrees.

PARMA BUSINESS DESTROYED IN FIRE
A weekend fire destroyed a business in Parma.
Chief of the Parma Volunteer Fire Department Walter Dale tells KWOC News that crews responded to the area of Vanney’s Grocery Store shortly before 8 pm Sunday night.
Crews were on scene for multiple hours before clearing the fire with multiple area agencies assisting. The building is being considered a total loss.
No information was available on a cause for the fire but no foul play is suspected.
THREE RIVERS COLLEGE OFFERING FREE TRAINING TO BECOME A COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER
Three Rivers College will be offering a free course this semester for anyone interested in becoming a Community Health Worker.
According to the college, Community Health Workers provide a vital connection between health systems, community resources, and their clients, as well as provide education on how to reduce behavioral health risk factors.
The free online class will be conducted from January 15th through May 7th and the deadline to register is January 8th.

Parents in Poplar Bluff have the opportunity to get their children registered for youth volleyball.
According to the Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation Department, boys and girls in 3rd through 6th grade can be registered through January 10th. The registration fee is $30 and games will begin in mid-February at Poplar Bluff Middle School.

According to officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation, the bridge is located between mile markers 58 and 58.4.

MOTORISTS ASKED TO WATCH OUT FOR ICY AND SLICK ROAD CONDITIONS THIS MORNING
A winter storm crossed the region yesterday and motorists, especially in our northern areas, are asked to be extra careful on the roads this morning.
Snow and icy conditions will be possible on many area roadways.
Motorists should consider delaying travel if possible. If you do have to get on the road this morning, slow down and give yourself plenty of extra time to reach your destination.

TEMPERATURES EXPECTED TO DROP TO CLOSE TO SINGLE DIGITS THIS WEEK
Arctic air will push dangerously cold temperatures to our region this week.
According to the National Weather Service, overnight lows are expected to get close to the single digits by Wednesday night.
According to the American Red Cross, you can open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing to help prevent your pipes from freezing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
When temperatures are below freezing, you can also start a cold water drip from your faucets.
In the event you were to lose power, you can close blinds or curtains to keep in some heat. Also remember to wear layers of loose fitting, lightweight, warm clothing. Eating and drinking can also help you stay warm as food provides energy to warm the body.

MAN ARRESTED IN CLAY COUNTY ON CHILD PORNOGARPHY CHARGE
A man has been taken into custody in Northeast Arkansas on a child pornography related charge.
According to Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole, on Friday the Arkansas State Police and the Clay County Sheriff's Department executed a search warrant at a residence in Piggott.
The warrant came after a tip was reported that an I.P. address located in Piggott was involved in viewing and sending sexually explicit material involving children.
During the execution of the search warrant, 23 year old Zachery Lawrence was interviewed and taken into custody.
He was booked in at the Clay County Detention Center on a charge of possession of child pornography.
NO FATALITIES REPORTED IN MISSOURI DURING NEW YEAR HOLIDAY COUNTING PERIOD
No fatal traffic crashes were reported in Missouri during the New Year’s holiday counting period.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, troopers worked 44 traffic crashes, which included 21 injuries.
Troopers also made 50 DWI arrests during the New Year’s holiday counting period which ran from 6 pm last Tuesday to 11:59 pm on Wednesday.
BRIDGE REPLACEMENTS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TODAY NEAR CAMPBELL
Route 53 in Dunklin County will be closed for around four months beginning today as construction crews perform two bridge replacements.
The bridges are located between Route J and Route H near Campbell.
Work is scheduled to begin today with completion anticipated on Tuesday, May 6. The route will remain closed until the work is completed and a signed detour will be in place.
ROAD CLOSURE SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK IN NEW MADRID COUNTY
Route YY in New Madrid County will be closed this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.
The closure is located near Portageville, from Clearview Lane to County Road 355.

FIRST WINTER STORM OF 2025 POSSIBLE THIS WEEKEND
Southeast Missouri is bracing for our first look at winter weather this year during the upcoming weekend.
According to the National Weather Service, a winter storm with mixed precipitation types is likely late Saturday night into early Monday morning.
Senior Forecaster Keith Cooley with the National Weather Service tells us more.
“The wintry mix will include freezing rain, sleet, and snow, while some locations may end up seeing most of the precipitation fall as rain. The best chance of that happening will be closer to the Tennessee border in western Kentucky and the Arkansas border in Southeast Missouri.

Following this storm, winter air will start to filter into the area next week, dropping temperatures into the teens overnight and wind chill values could possibly reach around zero degrees.
AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING A REPORT OF SHOTS FIRED FROM A VEHICLE IN RIPLEY COUNTY
Authorities in Ripley County are investigating a report of shots being fired from earlier this week.
According to the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, at around 9:35 am on Tuesday, deputies responded to a report that shots were fired from a vehicle on Ripley 142E-20 the night before.
Witnesses told deputies that they believed that the shots had been fired from a pickup. No injuries or damage was reported.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
FIVE FILE FOR SPOTS ON POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL BOARD
Five people have put in their candidacy for a spot on the Poplar Bluff R-1 Board of Education.
According to school officials, there are two school board spots that will be voted on during the municipal election on April 8th.
Current Board Members Cynthia Brown and Roger Hanner have both filed to run for reelection and they are being joined by newcomers Heather Rommel, Mike Moss, and Lynn McCormack.
MAJOR DISASTER DECLARATION APPROVED FOR SOME SOUTHEAST MISSOURI COUNTIES
President Joe Biden has approved a major federal disaster declaration for multiple counties in Southeast Missouri.
Missouri Governor Mike Parson has announced that the president approved his request for a major federal disaster declaration to help local governments and nonprofit agencies in 14 counties respond to the severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding that occurred from November 3rd through November 9th, resulting in significant damage to public infrastructure.
The declaration makes federal public assistance available for the repair of damaged roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure as well as reimbursement of associated emergency response and recovery costs. The Governor’s November 26 request included nearly $45 million in qualifying expenses already identified.
Southeast Missouri counties listed in the declaration include Carter, Oregon, Reynolds, and Shannon counties.
The disaster declaration also makes assistance available statewide through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Hazard Mitigation Program, which assists with cost-effective measures to reduce the potential for future damage to public infrastructure as a result of natural disasters.
MAN IN CUSTODY ON MURDER CHARGE IN KENNETT
A Kennett man is in custody on a murder charge.
According to Kennett Chief of Police Kenny Wilson, shortly before 7 pm on December 31st, officers responded to a location on Lynndale Drive in reference to a suicidal male subject that was armed with a gun.
At the scene, officers found 67 year old Linda Lloyd deceased from a single gunshot wound.
A suspect, identified as 44 year old Tommy Lloyd, was taken into custody at the scene.
Lloyd is being held on charges of 1st degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon at the Dunklin County Jail.
He was scheduled to appear in a Dunklin County courtroom Thursday morning.
POPLAR BLUFF PARKS AND RECREATION TO RING IN NEW YEAR WITH 5K RUN
Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation will be celebrating the beginning of 2025 this weekend with a 5k run.
The Resolution Rush 5k will begin at 10 am on Saturday at McLane Park. Check-in will start at 9:30 am and the cost is $10.

A scratchers player in Poplar Bluff won a grand prize of a ticket, although she didn’t initially realize it.
According to the Missouri Lottery, the woman purchased a “Crossword Plus” scratchers ticket at a business on Highway 53 and after scratching it, she returned to the store to have the clerk scan it.
The clerk returned the ticket to her and said that they couldn’t cash it. That’s when the woman said she realized that she had won $50,000.
Officials with the Missouri Lottery say that players in Butler County won more than 8.1 million dollars in prizes during the 2024 fiscal year.

MISSOURI MINIMUM WAGE RISES BY OVER A DOLLAR
Missouri's low-wage workers have received a pay hike with the coming of the new year.
The state's minimum wage rose yesterday by one dollar and forty five cents to $13.75 an hour. The minimum wage for tipped workers in Missouri also rose to $6.875 per hour.
Missouri’s minimum wage has almost doubled in the past decade. In 2015, the state minimum wage was only $7.65.
On November 5, Missouri voters approved Proposition A, which prompted the increase. The minimum wage will go up next year to $15 an hour. After next year, all future annual adjustments to the minimum wage will be based on the Consumer Price Index.

The date has been announced for the 2025 Three Rivers College Alumni Reunion.
A full day of festivities is planned for Saturday, February 1st on the campus of Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff.

BUTLER COUNTY SHERIFF URGES AREA RESIDENTS TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR SCAM PHONE CALLS
A Southeast Missouri Sheriff is asking area residents to be cautious about scam phone calls.
Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs recently posted on Facebook that scammers are continuing to call residents stating they did not show up for jury duty and that there is a warrant for their arrest unless they pay a fine.
Dobbs say that no one in local, state, or federal law enforcement
will call you to let you know you have a warrant or owe a fine.
If you receive what you feel could be a scam phone call, contact your local law enforcement agency.

Missouri police officers will begin issuing citations tomorrow for using a cell phone while driving.

DEADLINE APPROACHING TO PAY YOUR PROPERTY TAX
The new year is approaching fast, which means that it is time to pay your personal property tax.
Butler County Collector Emily Parks tells KWOC News that the Collector’s office will be open today from 8 am to 4 pm and the office will remain open through the lunch hour. After hours, residents can also pay at the drop box on the east side of the Butler County Courthouse.
You can also pay your property tax online at ButlerCountyMO.com.
Parks says that interest and penalties are added to the amount due at the beginning of each month for anyone who misses the deadline.
If you are paying by mail, it must be postmarked by December 31 to avoid penalties. Parks says that the best way to ensure that is the case is to take your mail inside the post office to drop it off.
PERSON AIRLIFTED TO MEMPHIS HOSPITAL IN CRITICAL CONDITION FOLLOWING SIDE BY SIDE CRASH IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS
One person was airlifted to an area hospital Sunday night following a side by side crash.
According to Greene County Sheriff Brad Snyder, at around 6:30 pm, deputies were dispatched to a single vehicle crash in the area of County Road 320.
The two occupants of the vehicle were found to have injuries, with one being in critical condition. Snyder says that the critical patient was flown to a Memphis hospital, while the other was transported via ambulance to an area hospital with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.
Preliminary information indicates that the vehicle failed to negotiate a curve which resulted in the crash.
SEMO RISEN RIDERS POLAR BEAR RUN SCHEDULED FOR NEW YEARS DAY
The SEMO Risen Riders will be hosting their annual Polar Bear Run on New Year’s Day.
Officials say the motorcycle ride will start at 1 pm Wednesday at Light House Church in Dexter. The ride will be preceded by a hot dog and chili lunch.
All vehicles are welcome and the length of the ride will be determined by the temperature outside.
CULVERT REPAIRS TO CAUSE CLOSURE OF PEMISCOT COUNTY ROAD
Route P in Pemiscot County will be closed this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace several culverts under the roadway.
The section of roadway being closed is located from County Road 266 to East Cleveland Street in Hayti.
Weather permitting, work will take place today through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

The Doniphan girls’ basketball team has continued their Christmas dynasty in Southeast Missouri.
The Donettes defeated Portageville 60-33 Saturday night to win the 27th Annual Lady Royals Christmas Classic. This is the fourth straight Christmas Classic Championship for Doniphan.
Also at the Christmas Classic on Saturday, Neelyville beat Poplar Bluff in the 3rd place game, Twin Rivers defeated Kennett in the 5th place game, and Malden was victorious over Holcomb for the consolation bracket championship.

Vashon is the new champion of the Poplar Bluff Showdown.
The Wolverines defeated Poplar Bluff 81-28 Saturday night to win the 37th Annual Poplar Bluff Showdown.
In the 3rd Place Game, Staley beat Izard County. Maumelle took home the Consolation Championship with a 87-76 win over McCracken County.
Trinity Christian won the 7th Place Game over Urbana.
VEHICLE SOUGHT IN CONNECTION TO HIT AND RUN
Authorities are investigating a hit and run crash in Butler County.
Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC news that on Friday, troopers investigated a leaving the scene crash on Route M near US Highway 67.
The suspect vehicle that left the scene could possibly be a white 2022-24 GMC AT4. The suspect vehicle was travelling westbound on Route M from Poplar Bluff and has front-end damage on the driver’s side.
Anyone with information in connection to this incident is asked to contact the Missouri State Highway Patrol at 573-840-9500.
TWO IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING PURSUIT
Two people have been taken into custody following a pursuit in southeast Missouri.
According to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department, on Friday, deputies were advised to be on the lookout for a white 2020 Dodge Durango that had fled from a State Trooper.
Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, which accelerated and led officers on a pursuit.
The vehicle exited I-55 at Matthews and drove east on State Highway 80 at high rates of speed until crashing into a ditch near County Road 706.
After the crash, two individuals fled from the vehicle on foot. They were both later taken into custody.
During the course of the investigation, officers learned that the suspects had thrown approximately 225 grams of Marijuana from the vehicle.
On Saturday, a warrant was issued for 25 year old Jaquan Dodds, of Charleston, on charges of aggravated fleeing from a stop, possession of a controlled substance, and tampering with physical evidence. His bond was set at $25,000, cash only.
A warrant was also issued for 25 year old Patrick Stayhorn, of East Prairie. Charges for Stayhorn were not released but he is being held on a $50,000 cash only bond.
FOUR NEW STATE TROOPERS WILL REPORT TO SOUTHEAST MISSOURI EARLY NEXT YEAR
Four new State Troopers have been assigned to Southeast Missouri.
Colonel Eric Olson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, tells KWOC News that a total of 30 troopers graduated from the Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy on December 20th.
Four of the graduates are coming to Southeast Missouri.
Trooper Ryan Brown, of Doniphan, has been assigned to Butler and Ripley counties.
Trooper Cody Naramore, of Chaffee, will be going to Mississippi, New Madrid, and Scott counties.
Troopers Corbin Dougherty, of Van Buren, and Michael Rudy, of Thayer, will cover Carter and Reynolds Counties.
The new troopers will report to duty on Monday, January 6th.
TWO WEEK ROAD PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY NEAR MOREHOUSE
Route E in New Madrid County will be closed for two weeks so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace several culverts under the roadway.
The work zone is located near Morehouse, between Route 60 and Route H.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily through Friday, January 10.

MAN FACING MULTIPLE CHARGES AFTER FIRING AT LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER IN DEXTER
A man is in custody after allegedly shooting at a law enforcement officer in Dexter.
According to Dexter Police Chief Hank Trout, shortly after 8 pm Wednesday night, dispatch received a call from a male who said he wanted to die by suicide by cop and that he would shoot at the police when they arrived at the residence.
Dexter police officers were dispatched to the area, with a Stoddard County Deputy and a member of the Missouri State Highway Patrol assisting.
When the deputy was arriving on the scene, he observed a male subject, later identified as 29 year old Steven Parks, of Dexter, standing on the front porch.
The deputy observed Parks point a handgun in his direction and fire. The deputy began to back his patrol car down the street, when Parks pointed the handgun in his direction a second time and fired another shot.
Parks then walked from the residence into the street where he was taken into custody without further incident. A loaded handgun was later recovered on the front porch.
Parks is being held in the Stoddard County Jail on charges of assault 1st degree, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon.

THREE PEOPLE KILLED IN MISSOURI TRAFFIC CRASHES DURING HOLIDAY COUNTING PERIOD
Three people were killed in traffic crashes in Missouri during the Christmas holiday counting period.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, troopers worked 65 traffic crashes, which included 38 injuries and and three fatalities.
This year, troopers also made 17 DWI arrests during the Christmas holiday counting period which ran from 6 pm on Tuesday to 11:59 pm on Wednesday.
TWO BRIDGES IN OZARK NATIONAL SCENIC RIVERWAYS DESIGNATED AS MEMORIALS FOR FALLEN WORLD WAR TWO SOLDIERS
Two bridges in Southeast Missouri have been designated as memorials for area soldiers who lost their lives during World War Two while serving their country.
According to Ozark National Scenic Riverways, the Highway 106 Bridge over the Jacks Fork at Alley Spring now memorializes Seaman First Class Thomas Wilburn Hunt, who resided in Alley before the war and was assigned as Boatsman Mate on the USS Chevalier.
Seaman Hunt was declared MIA after the Chevalier was sunk during an attack on a group of Japanese destroyers. Seaman Hunt was awarded the Purple Heart.
The Highway 17 Bridge near Summersville is now memorialized for Corporal Theodore Bernard Padberg. Corporal Padberg resided in Summersville prior to the war and enlisted in the Army on February 10, 1943.
He was declared MIA and awarded the Purple Heart after the S.S. Paul Hamilton, on which he was a passenger, was sunk in the Mediterranean Sea by a German bomber.
BRIDGE TO BE REPLACED AFTER BEING STRUCK BY AN OVER-HEIGHT VEHICLE
A Southeast Missouri bridge will have to be replaced next year after the bridge was struck by a vehicle.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, bridge damage has been found on the Route AA bridge over Route 60 in Sikeston. The bridge was damaged from an over-height vehicle last week.
MoDOT Project Manager Donna Philpot says that MoDOT has executed an emergency contract, hired a consultant to begin design work, and determined a May 16, 2025, letting date.
Philpot tells KWOC News that with the accelerated timeline, construction could begin as early as July 2025.

US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS ACCEPTING CHRISTMAS TREES FOR RECYCLING
If you are still wondering what to do with your Christmas tree, the US Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake would like to hear from you.
The Corps of Engineers is accepting Christmas trees through January 17th at the Redman Creek boat ramp. The drop-off location is marked with a sign.
Officials say that once the trees are deposited at the collection site, they become property of the Corps of Engineers for use in establishing fish shelters and small game habitats.

UNITED GOSPEL RESCUE MISSION TO PROVIDE CHRISTMAS MEALS
Preparations are underway for the United Gospel Rescue Mission’s Christmas Meal.
The Rescue Mission in Poplar Bluff will be providing meals on Wednesday, December 25th and is asking for support from the community.
Officials say that they need volunteers to help prepare meals from 9 am to noon in the days leading up to the event. On Christmas Day, the Rescue Mission will also need assistance to prepare, serve, and deliver the meals.

EUGENE FIELD TEACHER NAMED OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR
A Poplar Bluff teacher is being recognized for her efforts in the classroom.
Interventionist Teresa Webb of Eugene Field Elementary, whose tenure at Poplar Bluff Schools spans two decades, has been named a McDonald’s Outstanding Educator.
Webb was awarded a $100 gift card from McDonalds to use toward classroom resources.
McDonald’s solicited submissions from its Poplar Bluff social media accounts and received over 400 nominations.
Since the recognition program launched in 2020, Poplar Bluff Schools has had an awardee each year.
CARTER COUNTY MAN CONVICTED OF PRODUCING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
A Carter County man will be sentenced in April after being found guilty of a child pornography charge.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office, during the trial of 52 year old Clinton Rongey, evidence was shown that Rongey produced child sexual abuse material over a period of several months in 2023.
On Wednesday, Rongey was found guilty of a felony count of production of child pornography.
Rongey is scheduled to be sentenced on April 29th where he faces between 15 and 30 years in prison.
MISSOURI STATE HIGHWAY PATROL REMINDS MOTORISTS TO DRIVE SAFE OVER CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY
The Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding motorists to drive safely during the Christmas holiday weekend.
Remember to check your vehicle before you travel to ensure that it is in good working condition. Make sure you are well rested before driving to your destination, no matter how short the distance.
According to the Highway Patrol, last year there were 1,034 traffic crashes during the Christmas counting period. In those crashes, three people were killed and another 346 were injured.
The Christmas holiday counting period begins at 6 pm on Tuesday, December 24th and ends at 11:59 pm on December 25th.
If you face a traffic emergency, you can contact the Missouri State Highway Patrol at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone.

The Holiday season is here and state officials are reminding motorists that driver examinations will not be available on select days.

The driver of the first vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, as were two young passengers in his vehicle. The 17 year old driver of the second vehicle was also killed in the crash.

AREA LAW ENFORCEMENT PARTICIPATING IN DRIVE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER CAMPAIGN
Area law enforcement agencies are reminding everyone to not drink and drive while celebrating the holidays.
Law enforcement agencies across Missouri and Arkansas are participating in a Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement period through January 1st.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1,062 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes that involved an alcohol-impaired driver in December of 2022.
Drivers should be safe during the holidays by planning ahead if they intend to drink. Drivers should secure a designated sober driver or call a taxi or rideshare for a sober ride home.

BURGLARY INVESTIGATION LEADS TO ARREST OF PARMA MAN
A burglary investigation in Southeast Missouri has led to the arrest of a Parma man.
According to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department, on December 14th, deputies responded to a residence on Dale Street in Parma after a caller reported that someone had entered the home and stolen items.
The investigation identified a suspect as 30 year old Tevin Hill, who was taken into custody the next day.
Hill has been charged with burglary 2nd degree and felony stealing.
Officials say that most of the stolen property has been returned to the owner.

32ND ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS AUTO TOUR EXTENDED TO NEW YEAR
The 2024 Festival of Lights Auto Tour will be going on a little longer than originally planned.
The 32nd Annual Auto Tour will be held at the Redman Creek East Campground until the New Year.
Officials say that it was decided to make the extension due to the loss of days with the later Thanksgiving holiday. Donations from the Auto Tour helps support the 2025 fireworks expenses and all other events hosted by Friends of Wappapello Lake and Corps of Engineers.

OVER 14 THOUSAND DEER HARVESTED DURING LATE ANTLERESS PORTION OF FIREARM DEER SEASON
Hunters across Missouri took over 14,000 deer during the late antlerless portion of deer season.
According to preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation, hunters harvested 14,607 deer during the late antlerless portion of firearms deer season which ran from December 7th to the 15th.
Officials say that this year’s harvest total was down from last year’s total of over 18 thousand deer and was about 4 percent below the five-year average.
NEW MADRID POLICE INVESTIGATING SERIES OF THEFTS
Authorities in New Madrid are asking for the public’s assistance in locating thieves who hit the town Monday morning.
According to the New Madrid Police Department, officers are investigating a series of thefts that occurred during the early morning hours.
Officials say that the thieves moved from house to house checking for unlocked vehicles.
Police are asking for anyone with outdoor surveillance cameras to check their footage to see if they saw the suspects.
Anyone who has footage of the suspects is asked to contact the Police Department at 573-748-5901.
SHOULDER REPAIRS TO IMPACT US ROUTE 60 RAMPS NEAR FISK
Shoulder repairs could cause delays this week in Western Stoddard County.
The ramps from Route 60 to Route 51 near Fisk will be impacted as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform shoulder repairs.
Weather permitting, work will take place from today and tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
BRIDGE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK ON US ROUTE 61
Route 61 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.
The section of roadway is located over Interstate 55 near Exit 44 in New Madrid.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. both today and tomorrow.

ROBERT KNODELL APPOINTED AS POPLAR BLUFF CITY MANAGER
A new city manager has been appointed for the City of Poplar Bluff.
Robert Knodell was appointed to the position Monday night by a unanimous vote of the Poplar Bluff City Council.
Knodell will take over for City Clerk and Treasurer Lori Phelps, who has served as interim city manager following the resignation of Matt Winters, who announced his resignation in August to take the City Administrator position in Jackson.

Winters formally stepped down on September 20th.
Knodell has served on the staff of the Missouri General Assembly as well as the Governor in budgetary, policy, and leadership roles. In October 2021, he was named the acting director of the Missouri Department of Social Services. In June 2023 he was appointed by
Missouri Governor Mike Parson to be the full-status Director.
Knodell will officially start as Poplar Bluff City Manager on January 27th.

DEXTER POLICE INVESTIGATING MULTIPLE REPORTS OF VEHICLE TAMPERING
Authorities in Dexter are investigating multiple reports of stolen vehicles.
According to Dexter Police Chief Hank Trout, shortly after 5 am on Sunday, officers responded to Saddle Spur Road to a report of someone tampering with a motor vehicle.
At least five other reports of vehicle tampering were received by Dexter police on Sunday which included at least two cars being stolen. One of the cars was later recovered.
Monday morning, officers took another report of a vehicle that had been tampered with and a firearm was stolen.

FIRST ROUND MATCHUPS SET FOR 37TH ANNUAL POPLAR BLUFF SHOWDOWN
The first round matchups have been set for the 37th Annual Poplar Bluff Showdown.
The three day tournament will start on Thursday, December 26th at Poplar Bluff High School.
The first round will see McCracken County take on Izard County at 4 pm, followed by Vashon vs. Trinity Christian at 5:30 pm, Poplar Bluff against Urbana at 7 pm, and the day will finish with Maumelle vs. Staley at 8:30 pm.
Poplar Bluff Athletics Director Kent Keith tells KWOC News that tickets are on sale in the High School Athletic Department for eight dollars per day.

PARAGOULD MAN ARRESTED ON SEXUAL ASSAULT CHARGE
A Paragould man has been arrested on a sexual assault charge.
According to the Paragould Police Department, earlier this month the mother of the victim told officers that her 15 year old daughter had been having a sexual relationship with 24 year old Corwin White.
White was later interviewed at the Police Department where he gave self-incriminating statements.
White has been charged with felony sexual assault in the 4th degree. His bond was set at $10,000.
STODDARD COUNTY ROAD CLOSED AFTER BRIDGE WASHES OUT
Heavy rains have caused the closure of a County Road in Stoddard County.
According to the Stoddard County Emergency Management Agency, a bridge has washed out on County Road 436. The bridge was located west of WW Highway.
Area motorists should seek alternate routes and use caution if you do have to drive in that area.
CULVERT REPLACEMENT TO FORCE CLOSURE OF COOTER AREA ROAD
Route H in Pemiscot County will be closed this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.
The closure will be located from County Road 548 to County Road 556 near Cooter.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily through Friday.

14 women’s basketball teams will be descending on Broseley starting this weekend for the Annual Lady Royals Christmas Classic.
The tournament is scheduled to run from December 21st through the 28th at Twin Rivers High School and will feature numerous area schools.
There are six first round matchups set for Saturday including Portageville taking on Naylor to start the tournament at noon, Poplar Bluff facing Holcomb at 2:30 pm, and host Twin Rivers battling Malden at 3:45 pm.

UNITED GOSPEL RESCUE MISSION TO PROVIDE CHRISTMAS MEALS
Preparations are underway for the United Gospel Rescue Mission’s Christmas Meal.
The Rescue Mission in Poplar Bluff will be providing meals on Wednesday, December 25th and is asking for support from the community.
Officials say that they need volunteers to help prepare meals from 9 am to noon in the days leading up to the event. On Christmas Day, the Rescue Mission will also need assistance to prepare, serve, and deliver the meals.
Brother Kirk with the Rescue Mission says that they are in critical need of drivers for Christmas morning.

ELLINGTON TEENAGER KILLED IN SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH
An Ellington teenager has died from injuries he received in a single vehicle crash over the weekend.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 17 year old boy was driving on Highway 21 when his vehicle ran off the roadway, overturned, and struck a tree. The crash occurred shortly after 11 pm Saturday, three miles south of Ellington.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by Reynolds County Coroner Jeff McSpadden.
POPLAR BLUFF MAN TO BE SENTENCED IN MARCH ON METH DISTRIBUTION CHARGE
A Poplar Bluff man will be sentenced next year on a meth distribution charge.
33 year old Deshante Nabors was found guilty Thursday of one felony count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
In August of 2020, a Poplar Bluff Police Department officer tried to conduct a traffic stop of a vehicle being driven by Nabors. Nabors continued to drive, tossing out a black sock containing meth. Nabors then jumped out of the vehicle while it was moving and ran away. He was later found and arrested.
Officers found that Nabors had over $1,000 in cash and a clear bag containing more meth in his pocket. There was more methamphetamine and marijuana found in the vehicle.
Nabors is facing up to 20 years in prison at his sentencing, which is scheduled for March 18, 2025.
BODY OF MISSING NORTHEAST ARKANSAS MAN BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN FOUND
Authorities have found what they believe to be the body of a missing Northeast Arkansas man.
According to Randolph County Sheriff Kevin Bell, on Wednesday December 4th, 48 year old Anthony Scott had called 911 saying that he needed help. Scott stated that he was going to a friend’s house and had got turned around and ended up in a creek. Dispatch lost contact with him and the phone lost service. Temperatures at that time were below freezing.
The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office coordinated a massive search of the area for several days with the help of multiple area agencies such as the Pocahontas Fire Department, Arkansas Game and Fish, and the Arkansas State Police, along with numerous volunteers and residents.
At approximately 2:30 pm on Thursday, Scott was found deceased in a remote area grown up with tall grass and underbrush, approximately one mile from the original phone ping area.
Sheriff Bell says that the body has been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab in Little Rock to determine the cause of death and they believe that the freezing temperatures will be a contributing factor.
ROAD WORK TO CAUSE CHANGES TO MORNING DROP OFFS AT EUGENE FIELD ELEMENTARY
Parents at a Poplar Bluff elementary school will need to alter their drop off plans for their kids beginning today.
According to Eugene Field Elementary School, road work on Highway 53, Cross Street, and Henry Street will force bus traffic to drop off behind the school on Arthur Street at the parent pick up gates. Drop off for car riders will still be in the front of the school however parents will need to reroute to get to the school.
This will affect morning traffic only, afternoon parent pick up should be able to run the normal route.

POPLAR BLUFF FAMILY TO BE INDUCTED INTO MISSOURI SPORTS HALL OF FAME
A Poplar Bluff family will be honored early next year.
According to Poplar Bluff Athletics Director Kent Keith, the Godwin Golf Family will be inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame on February 2nd.
Buddy Godwin won more than 100 amateur tournaments and was also an eight-time winner of the Ozark Open. He also won the Missouri Amateur in 1973 and later competed in several PGA Senior Tour events.

Bobby Godwin was a three-year letterman at Poplar Bluff High School, competing on the Mules’ 1980 and 1981 state championship teams. Beginning in 1989, he qualified for seven USGA events and won numerous local, state and national amateur tournaments, including the 1999 Missouri State Stroke Play championship, and was the Missouri Golf Association Player of the Year that year.
Ben Godwin lettered in golf for four years at Poplar Bluff, competing on the Mules’ 1988 state championship team. He began winning local and state amateur tournaments in 1990, qualifying for six USGA events. He won the two-man state team event with Bobby in 1998 and eventually won the Missouri Amateur in 2003 and 2006.
Buddy and Ben are only the second father-son duo to win the Missouri Amateur following Bill and Payne Stewart.
WARRANTS SERVED ON MULTIPLE PEOPLE IN CONNECTION TO DRIVE BY SHOOTING IN RIPLEY COUNTY
Warrants were served on multiple people this week in connection to a drive by shooting in Ripley County.
According to a probable cause affidavit, on December 2nd, two subjects reported that shots were fired from a vehicle into their residence. The reporting party said that 11 rounds struck the front of the house with the total damage exceeding $1,000.
During an interview with Gauge Bissette, of Doniphan, Bissette reportedly admitted to officers that he was in a vehicle with Jordan Sumner and Gunnar Hill when Sumner and Hill each fired pistols at the residence. Bissette then concealed the pistols for a time before returning them to Sumner and Hill.
Warrants were served on Sumner and Hill, both of Doniphan, on Tuesday, charging each of them with four counts of armed criminal action and two counts of assault 2nd degree, among other charges.
Bissette was arrested on those charges last week and appeared in a Ripley County courtroom on Wednesday, where he pleaded not guilty.
A fourth person who was in the vehicle has not currently been charged.
POPLAR BLUFF MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO STATUTORY RAPE AND STATUTORY SODOMY
A Poplar Bluff man will be sentenced in February after pleading guilty to statutory rape.
According to Missouri Case Net, Corvette Christian entered a guilty plea on Tuesday to charges of 1st degree statutory rape out of Butler County and statutory sodomy out of Ripley County.
The charges stemmed from incidents that occurred in 2022.
Prosecutors have recommended sentences of 11 to 15 years for each charge.
Sentencing has been scheduled for February 25th.
NORTHSIDE COMMUNITY CENTER TO HOST PANCAKE BREAKFAST THIS WEEKEND
Northside Community Center in Poplar Bluff will be hosting their annual Pancake Breakfast this weekend.
The event has been scheduled for 9 am to noon on Saturday and will include pancakes, sausage, eggs, and a beverage.

A Poplar Bluff church will be distributing winter items to area residents this weekend.
Mt. Calvary Powerhouse Church is hosting the 18th Annual Community Coat Drive from 9 am to noon on Saturday, December 14th.
Officials say that the “Drive Thru” event will include coats, hats, gloves, food boxes, and diapers.

TWO WAPPAPELLO RESIDENTS ARRESTED ON METH CHARGES IN WAYNE COUNTY
Two Wappapello residents were arrested on meth charges Wednesday in Wayne County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 24 year old Joshua Henson was arrested shortly before 3 pm on felony charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of stolen property, and possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine.
Henson also had a felony Butler County warrant for dangerous drugs.
A short time later, 26 year old Jasmine Henson was also taken into custody on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine.
Both were held at the Wayne County Jail.

Three area women made Missouri history Tuesday night.
Tierra Johnson, Laura Hagood, and Stefanie Tinsley became the 1st all female officiating crew to oversee a boys varsity basketball game in the state of Missouri when they officiated the matchup between Scott County Central and Zalma.
Johnson played at Three Rivers College and Southeast Missouri State University, Hagood played for TRC and was two time All-Region before going on to play at Murray State, and Tinsley was a stand out player at TRC.

CHARGES REQUESTED FOR FOUR SUSPECTS IN CONNECTION WITH FIGHT AT GIDEON HIGH SCHOOL
Updating a story we have been following for you, charges have been requested against four teenagers in connection to a fight at Gideon High School.
The fight occurred Friday night during a basketball tournament that was being held at the school.
According to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department, the fight started when a small group of individuals entered the school, paid admission, and immediately began to fight with students in line at the concession stand. The alleged instigators never entered the gymnasium nor were they participants in the events.
Officials say that there were no injuries and no weapons used in the altercation.
As a result of the investigation, a report has been filed with the New Madrid County Prosecutor's Office and the New Madrid County Juvenile Office. Charges are being requested on four suspects, ranging in age from 15 to 19. No names have been released.
Only one of the four suspects is currently attending a school that was involved in the event. The Hayti School District has taken disciplinary action against the student.
OZARK FOOTHILLS REGIONAL PLANNING COMMISSION TO HOST MEETING TONIGHT
Multiple topics will be discussed at a meeting of the Ozark Foothills Regional Planning Commission.
The open meeting will begin at 6 pm tonight at the Planning Commission on Fair Street in Poplar Bluff.
The agenda will include the Transportation Advisory Committee report, Solid Waste Management; Ripley County Public Housing report; as well as new grants submitted and received.

STATE OFFICIALS MONITORING REPORTS OF SICK WATERFOWL ACROSS THE STATE
Waterfowl hunters in Missouri are asked to be extra cautious due to an outbreak of bird flu.
The Missouri Department of Conservation is monitoring reports of sick and dead waterfowl, such as geese and ducks, across the state. The Department is actively collecting birds to determine the cause of illness but suspects highly pathogenic avian influenza to be the cause.
Due to ongoing waterfowl hunting seasons, waterfowl hunters should dress game birds in the field whenever possible or at a location away from poultry or other birds. Hunters should also properly dispose of harvest waste by placing the remains in trash bags and disposing of them through trash collection or a permitted landfill.
Avian influenza does not present an immediate public health concern, though on rare occasions it has infected humans and other animals. It is safe to eat poultry and wild game as normal cooking temperatures are hot enough to kill the virus if present. Meat should be cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
Though HPAI does not present an immediate public health concern, MDC recommends that people do not touch dead geese, waterfowl, or other bird species.
MATTHEWS MAN INDICTED ON MULTIPLE DRUG CHARGES
A Matthews man has been indicted on multiple drug related charges.
According to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department, last week, a Federal Grand Jury found probable cause to indict David Wilburn, of Mathews, on charges of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
Officials say that the charges stem from an multi agency investigation where Wilburn was arrested at his residence in September.
As a part of that investigation, officers located approximately 61 grams of methamphetamine, multiple firearms, drug paraphernalia with packaging supplies, and a 3-D printer that was used for manufacturing illegal firearms.
LOW INTEREST LOAN AWARDED TO CARTER COUNTY WATER DISTRICT FOR DRINKING WATER SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS
Some Southeast Missouri residents could be seeing water improvements thanks to a recent decision by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
The Department has awarded a $278,000 low-interest loan to Carter County Public Water Supply District Number 1 for planning and design work related to the district’s ongoing drinking water improvement project.
Officials say that the funds will provide vital interim financing to cover early engineering and administrative costs while the district works with the department to secure a larger loan and grant funding package for their drinking water project.
The larger construction project is expected to cost $5.8 million and is expected to start in 2025.

WOMAN FLOWN TO ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL FOLLOWING CRASH NEAR POPLAR BLUFF
A Bloomfield woman was flown from the scene of a crash Monday afternoon in Butler County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly before 5 pm on US Highway 67, two miles north of Poplar Bluff, when a vehicle pulled into the path of another vehicle.
The driver of the second vehicle, a 78 year old woman from Bloomfield, was flown to a St. Louis hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the first vehicle received moderate injuries and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

Poplar Bluff residents are being asked to give their input on the draft plan to the city’s Active Transportation Plan.
The draft says that the goal of the plan is to prioritize sidewalk
and trail improvements that are safe for all users, as well as identify ways to improve the short and long-term health outcomes of Poplar Bluff’s residents.

POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL BETA CLUB TO HOST COOKIES WITH SANTA EVENT
Poplar Bluff area children will be able to visit with Santa this weekend during an event at Poplar Bluff High School.
The PBHS Beta Club will be hosting Cookies with Santa on Saturday, December 14th from 1 to 4 pm at the PBHS Cafeteria.
Parents will spend $10 for their first child and $5 for any additional children.
Kids will get to visit with Santa as well as enjoy games, crafts, and food.
VETERAN WREATH PLACEMENT CEREMONY SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND
Wreaths will be placed on the graves of veterans this weekend.
On December 14th the Poplar Bluff Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, in cooperation with Wreaths Across America, will hold a ceremony at the Poplar Bluff Memorial Gardens Cemetery to honor veterans buried there.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11 am.
Everyone is invited to attend the ceremony, which will be followed by placing wreaths on veteran’s graves.

PUBLIC MEETING SCHEDULED TO DISCUSS ROUTE 60 STUDY IN NEW MADRID COUNTY
A public meeting has been scheduled for this month to discuss Interstate 57 and Route 60 in New Madrid and Scott Counties.
The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 19th to discuss the Route 60 conceptual study in New Madrid and Scott Counties.
The meeting will be held at MoDOT's Southeast District Office in Sikeston.
The study includes an 11-mile section of U.S. Route 60 from the I-55/I-57/US 60 interchange in Sikeston to County Road 593. Officials say the study is a step in the multi-phase process to extend Interstate 57 from I-55 in Sikeston to Little Rock, Arkansas.
To extend I-57, it would be necessary to upgrade U.S. 60 to interstate standards. The corridor includes many at-grade intersections in addition to multiple field entrances, median crossovers and private driveways.
MoDOT has initiated this study to take a preliminary look at options for upgrading the roadway to improve safety and traffic flow.

CONTRACT AWARDED FOR BRIDGE REPLACEMENT IN BUTLER COUNTY
The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission has awarded contracts for various road projects in Southeast Missouri.
According to officials, an over 841 thousand dollar contract was awarded to Joe’s Bridge and Grading, for a bridge replacement on Route 158 over Craven Ditch in Butler County.
An over 2.6 million dollar contract was awarded to Apex Paving for resurfacing and adding rumble strips on Route 62 from Route 53 to the Arkansas State line and from Route 53 to Route 25 in Dunklin County.
Additional information about the projects, including a timeline and what impacts there will be to traffic, will be released prior to the start of construction.

ESSEX MAN ARRESTED ON SEXUAL MISCONDUCT AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY WARRANT
An Essex man is in custody after his arrest on a sexual misconduct and child pornography warrant.
According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 21 year old Damon Austin was recently arrested on a two count warrant for sexual misconduct involving a child under 15 and possession of child pornography.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Austin was having inappropriate contact with a juvenile over text messages.
He was held in the Stoddard County Jail on a $20,000, cash only, bond.

MAN SENTENCED TO OVER 12 YEARS IN PRISON FOR SELLING METH FROM HIS HOME IN FISK
A Southeast Missouri man has been sentenced to over 12 years in prison for selling meth from his home in Butler County.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office, in February of 2023, Southeast Missouri Drug Task Force officers received information that Johnny Morrow was selling methamphetamine.
Officers made two purchases of meth totaling 22 grams from Morrow at his home in Fisk. When officers arrived to serve a court-approved search warrant for Morrow’s home, he tried to run away but was caught and detained while still on the premises.
Officers found a pill bottle in a bedroom containing eight bags of meth packaged in a manner consistent with drugs intended for delivery, totaling approximately 31.6 grams, a separate pill bottle containing approximately 64.78 grams of meth and a bag of approximately 52.97 grams of meth concealed in a jacket.
Morrow pleaded guilty in June to one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Last week, he was sentenced to 152 months in prison.
FILING TO BEGIN TODAY FOR CITY COUNCIL ELECTIONS
Filing will begin today for the upcoming Poplar Bluff City Council elections.
The city will be holding elections in April for two seats on the City Council, one representative each from Wards One and Three. Both elections will be for three year terms.
Candidates can begin filing for the election today at 8 am. The final day for candidate filing will be December 31st.

Filing will also begin today for multiple positions on the Poplar Bluff R-1 Board of Education. According to school officials, there are two positions available for three year terms that will be voted on during the election on April 8th, 2025.

MULTIPLE EARTHQUAKES SHAKE SOUTHEAST MISSOURI THURSDAY MORNING
Multiple earthquakes shook Southeast Missouri Monday morning
According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 3.0 quake was recorded at around 12:30 am Monday morning.
The earthquake was centered around two and half miles west of Howardville and had a depth of almost five miles.
Officials say that six other earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 1.8 to 2.2 were recorded between midnight and 7:30 am Monday in the southeast Missouri area.
ONE DEAD FOLLOWING FIRE IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS
One person has died following a fire in Northeast Arkansas.
According to Greene County Sheriff Brad Snyder, at around 7:30 pm Saturday night, a structure fire was reported in the 1700 block of County Road 333.
After the fire was extinguished, firefighters discovered a body inside the residence.
Snyder says that the body will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for an autopsy and to determine positive identification.
Due to a death occurring from this fire, the Paragould Fire Department’s Fire Marshal has been requested to assist with the investigation.
ROAD WORK TO CAUSE CLOSURE TODAY NEAR COOTER
Route H in Pemiscot County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.
The section of roadway is located from County Road 548 to County Road 556 near Cooter.
Weather permitting, work will take place today from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

NUMEROUS FLOATS LIGHT UP POPLAR BLUFF DURING THE RIVER RADIO LIGHTED CHRISTMAS PARADE
Numerous spectators and over one hundred vehicles lit up downtown Poplar Bluff this past weekend.
Everyone was out Friday night for the latest edition of the River Radio Lighted Christmas Parade. In addition to the parade, spectators also took in the lighting of the Downtown Poplar Bluff Community Christmas Tree in front of the Black River Coliseum.

DONIPHAN MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO SECOND DEGREE MURDER
A Doniphan man is facing over a decade behind bars for the murder of a man in 2019.
According to Missouri Case Net, 44 year old David Scrivner Jr, pled guilty last week to a felony charge of murder 2nd degree.
Following the plea, Scrivner was sentenced to 15 years incarceration in the Department of Corrections.
Scrivner, along with four other people, were arrested in July of 2019 after the remains of 44 year old Daniel Richardson were discovered in Ripley County.
LARGE FIGHT CAUSES CANCELLATION OF GIDEON BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
A fight prompted the cancellation of a basketball tournament Friday in Southeast Missouri.
According to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department, shortly before 8 pm Friday, officers from multiple area agencies were called to Gideon High School due to a large fight in the building.
Officials say that the scene was quickly gotten under control by officers and no one was injured in the incident.
Sources tell KWOC News that three players were assaulted in the lobby during halftime of the 3rd place game which led to the fight.
The remainder of the tournament was cancelled. South Pemiscot had been set to play East Prairie in the championship game.
ONE DEAD FOLLOWING CRASH IN PEMISCOT COUNTY
One person is dead following a crash on Friday in Pemiscot County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a truck struck a vehicle head on five miles west of Caruthersville on Route U.
A 79 year old woman, from Caruthersville, was driving the second vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. No injuries were listed for the driver of the truck.
MONTHS LONG JOINT INVESTIGATION ENDS IN DRUG INDICTMENT IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
A months-long investigation by multiple Southeast Missouri law enforcement agencies has resulted in a drug indictment.
According to authorities, on November 1st officers with the SEMO Drug Task Force, New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, New Madrid Police Department, and Portageville Police Department executed two search warrants at a residence in Lilbourn.
During the search, officers located more than 1.5 pounds of suspected methamphetamine, fentanyl, heroin, and ecstasy.
The bust resulted in the arrest of Charles A. Perkins.
On December 3rd, Perkins was indicted by a Federal Grand Jury for possession with the intent to distribute over 500 grams of methamphetamine.
Officials say that Perkins is now in the custody of the US Marshals.
CULVERT REPLACEMENT TO CAUSE ROAD CLOSURE TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY
Route JJ in Butler County will be closed today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace a culvert under the roadway.
The work zone is located between Route 67 and County Road 3733.
Weather permitting, work will take place today from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Route 51 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform shoulder work.
The section of roadway being reduced is located from County Road 228 to County Road 224 near Qulin.
