NEW CHIEF OF POLICE CHOSEN FOR POPLAR BLUFF

A new head of the Poplar Bluff Police Department has been selected.

City Manager Matt Winters tells KWOC News that Mike McClain has been appointed as the new Chief of Police for the Police Department.

McClain has served as Interim Police Chief since the retirement of Danny Whitely earlier this year.

McClain was first hired as a patrolman with the Poplar Bluff Police Department in March of 1995 and has served as Deputy Chief since September 2019.

Winters tells us that McClain has demonstrated excellent leadership abilities while serving as Deputy and interim chief. He is also respected by the members of the PBPD and by the other department heads within the city.

McClain will be sworn in on Monday during the City Council meeting. 

VAN BUREN MAN SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON FOR THE SHOOTING OF LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS

A Van Buren man has been sentenced in connection to the shooting of two law enforcement officers in 2019.

James Cummings, of Van Buren, was convicted in July on four counts of assault 1st degree and armed criminal action stemming from the shooting of a Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper and a Carter County Deputy in August of 2019.

The officers had been attempting to serve an eviction notice at a residence when they were struck by gunfire coming from inside the residence.

Both officers survived the incident

On Thursday, Cummings was sentenced to life in prison on each of the four counts of assault and 50 years for each of the armed criminal action charges. 

TWO SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AGENCIES AWARDED GRANTS FROM USDA

Two Southeast Missouri agencies have been awarded grant money for the United States Department of Agriculture.

The Carter County Health Center is receiving a $231,477 grant to assist with funds to hire a Licensed Practical Nurse dedicated to testing and vaccination, which will double the health center's vaccination capacity.

This investment will also be used to purchase additional medical supplies, vaccines, and tests to ensure they have sufficient resources now and in the future.

The Bootheel Cultural & Performing Arts Center is receiving a $54,600 grant under the nutrition assistance portion of the Emergency Rural Health Care Grant to purchase a walk-in-cooler, forklift, enclosed trailer, and a battery powered pallet lift for the Center.

Officials say these items will assist the entity with the increased need for their food bank operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

MISSOURI GOVERNOR FILLS VACANCIES IN TWO SOUTHEAST MISSOURI COUNTIES

Missouri Governor Mike Parson has filled vacancies in two Southeast Missouri counties.

Governor Parson announced on Friday that Beverly Finch, of Patterson, has been appointed as the Wayne County Assessor.

Finch has served as a Real Estate Clerk with the Wayne County Assessor's Office since 2004. Prior to joining the Assessor's Office, she worked for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

In Mississippi County, Melissa Davis, of Charleston, was appointed as the County Public Administrator.

Davis has nearly 18 years of experience as a social worker in long term care facilities.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS TO FORCE CLOSURE OF STODDARD COUNTY ROAD TODAY

Route HH in Stoddard County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs. 

According to officials, the closure will be located from Route 153 to Route CC near Baker.

Work is scheduled to take place today from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.  

DUNKLIN COUNTY ROAD TO BE REDUCED THIS WEEK FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS

Route J in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of Route J to be reduced is located from County Road 215 to County Road 109.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily through Thursday.

TWO DEAD FOLLOWING HEAD ON COLLISION NEAR POPLAR BLUFF

Two men have died in connection to a head on collision Thursday morning.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the wreck occurred at around 6:40 am on Butler County Road 441, one mile west of Poplar Bluff.

A vehicle, driven by 26 year old James Fuller, of Poplar Bluff, reportedly crossed the center line and struck another vehicle head on.

Both Fuller and the driver of the second vehicle, identified as 67 year old James Osborn, of Poplar Bluff, were transported to an area hospital where they were pronounced dead. 

GREENVILLE WINS OFC BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Greenville is celebrating an OFC championship.

The Bears defeated Doniphan Thursday afternoon 12-2 to win the 2022 OFC Baseball tournament at Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff.

Greenville dominated their games during the tournament, winning each game by at least 10 runs and only allowing two runs over the entire tournament.

In the Third Place Game, Twin Rivers defeated Naylor 13-3.

Neelyville is also celebrating today after claiming a district championship in Softball. The Lady Tigers defeated Norwood 10-0 to win the Class 1 – District 1 Championship. Neelyville will begin sectional play on October 19th. 

NO FOUL PLAY SUSPECTED AFTER SKULL FOUND IN BUTLER COUNTY

Officials say that no foul play is suspected after a skull was found in Butler County.

According to Butler County Coroner Jim Akers, the skull was found earlier this month in the Black River.

Akers says that the skull has been identified as a human skull and appears to be a medical specimen used for educational purposes.

The Coroner’s Office has opened an investigation and requested the assistance of outside specialists.  

Akers added that this is an unusual discovery, however it is not a homicide investigation and no foul play is suspected.

The Coroner’s Office is searching for a lab to attempt to analyze the DNA, but due to the age and condition of the skull, it will be a lengthy process.

PBRMC TO HOST BREAST CANCER AWARENESS EVENT TODAY

The Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center will be hosting a breast cancer awareness and informational event today.

The free Pinktober Lunch and Learn will be from noon to 1 pm today at the Westwood Event Center in Poplar Bluff.

There will be an expert panel providing information about breast cancer and taking questions from the audience. There will also be food available as well as giveaways.

Attendees will also be able to schedule a mammogram while at the event.

SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED FOR THE 2022 TIGER FEST IN NEELYVILLE 

The schedule has been announced for Tiger Fest 2022 this weekend at Neelyville High School.

Officials say that the event will begin at 10 am on Saturday, October 15th.

There will be the annual parade, in addition to a talent show, games, a Halloween costume contest, and Mr. and Mrs. Tiger Fest 2022.

MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON GUN AND DRUG CHARGES IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

A New Madrid man has been taken into custody on gun and drug charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 54 year old Carl Davis was arrested Wednesday night on felony charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful misuse of a firearm with narcotics, and possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine.

Following the arrest, Davis was held at the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Office. 

MOBILITY IMPAIRED MODERN GUN DEER HUNT TO BE CONDUCTED THIS WEEKEND AT WAPPAPELLO LAKE

The US Army Corps of Engineers will be conducting a mobility impaired modern gun deer hunt this weekend at Wappapello Lake.

Corps officials tell KWOC News that the hunt will be conducted on Saturday and Sunday at five locations spread across the Wappapello Lake project. All areas will be properly signed to warn anyone walking a trail or accessing areas from parking lots.

During the hunt, multiple areas will be closed, including the Archery Range, Corps Road 33 at Wetfork, the Johnson Tract Trail, and below the dam area.

The 2022 Ozark Foothills Conference Baseball Tournament will come to an end today.

Greenville will be facing Doniphan at Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff for the OFC Championship. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.

The Third Place game will see Naylor take on Twin Rivers, beginning at 1 pm this afternoon.

CITY OF POPLAR BLUFF RECOGNIZED AS A TRUE STARS AND STRIPES CITY

A Southeast Missouri city has been recognized for its dedication to America.

The City of Poplar Bluff has been named a true Stars and Stripes City for “its ongoing embrace and dedication to the principles of informed citizenship, commitment, and service in our democratic society”.

Jim Martin with The Stars & Stripes National Museum, Library, and Learning Center presented Poplar Bluff City Manager Matt Winters with the proclamation Wednesday morning. 

POPLAR BLUFF MIDDLE SCHOOL TO HOST PARADE FOR VETERANS DAY

Poplar Bluff area veterans are being invited to participate in a parade for Veteran’s Day.

The Poplar Bluff Middle School is hosting a Veteran’s Day Parade on November 11th. Veterans who want to be involved will get to drive through a parade loop around the PBMS campus to be recognized and cheered by students.

The Parade will begin at 9:15 am and the veterans should arrive at the parking lot of the Highland Drive Church of Christ at 8:30 am.

Only veterans, students, and school staff will be allowed on campus for the event.

HUNTER EDUCATION CLASS TO BE HELD IN POPLAR BLUFF

A hunter education class will be held this month in Poplar Bluff.

The Hunter Education Fall Skills Session has been scheduled for Monday, October 24th at the Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center from 5 to 9 pm. Students can sign in beginning at 4:30 pm.

The event is open to the public at no cost, but students must preregister online by October 23rd. You can preregister online at https://mdc-event-web.s3licensing.com/. 

Class participants must bring proof of completion of the knowledge portion of the hunter’s education course along with a copy of their birth certificate or some other proof of age if under the age of 16.

FALL BUFF UP THE BLUFF COMING THIS WEEKEND

The 2022 Fall Buff up the Bluff event is set for this weekend.

The citywide clean up event has been scheduled for Saturday, October 15th.  

Henson’s Transfer Station on the Industrial Park Bypass will be accepting items from 8 am to 3 pm. Any yard waste, leaves, or limbs will still need to be taken to the east side site. Proof of Poplar Bluff residency will be required at both sites.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE DEPARTMENT TO OPEN NEW STATION THIS MORNING

The grand opening of the new Poplar Bluff Police Department headquarters is today.

According to police officials, the new facility, located at 911 North Shelby Road, will open at 8 am. 

All services previously provided at the Poplar Street location will now be done at the headquarters on Shelby Road. 

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME SET AT OFC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT

The Championship game is set for the 2022 Ozark Foothills Conference Baseball Tournament.

Greenville will be facing Doniphan on Thursday at Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff for the OFC Championship. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.

The Bears advanced to the finals following their win Tuesday over Naylor, 13-0. The Dons defeated Twin Rivers 6-4 to secure their place in the championship game.

Naylor and Twin Rivers will feature in the third place game, which is scheduled to begin at 1 pm on Thursday.

POPLAR BLUFF ROBOTICS CLASS RECEIVES FIVE THOUSAND DOLLAR DONATION

A Georgia based philanthropy group has donated thousands of dollars to a Southeast Missouri robotics class.

The Montgomery Family Foundation has funded more than $5,000 in equipment enhancements for the Poplar Bluff High School Robotics Program to replace second-hand tools.

Officials say that the donation helps make sure that the Iron Mules are not at a competitive disadvantage against larger organizations this school year.

PARADE HIGHLIGHTS 2022 BROSELEY HOMECOMING

Multiple events, including the annual parade, are planned for the 2022 Broseley homecoming this weekend.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 10 am on Saturday, with participants lining up beginning at 9 am at Twin Rivers High School.

Prior to the parade, the Broseley Senior Community Center will be hosting breakfast starting at 7 am.

There will also be live music, a 50/50 drawing, and a silent auction. 

BRIDGE REPAIRS FORCE CLOSURE OF STODDARD COUNTY ROAD

Route V in Stoddard County is being closed this week as contractor crews perform bridge repairs.

According to MoDOT, the closure is located between County Road 234 and County Road 232.

Route U in Stoddard County will be reduced both today and tomorrow as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs. 

The section of roadway involved in the repairs is located from Route H to County Road 651 near Bernie.

WAPPAPELLO MAN FLOWN TO ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL AFTER BEING RUN OVER BY A UTV

A Wappapello man has been flown to a regional hospital after being struck by a UTV.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident occurred Sunday afternoon in Wayne County, two miles west of Wappapello.

The UTV was backing up when it drove over 73 year old Charles Reed. The vehicle then struck a tree.

Reed suffered serious injuries and was flown to a St. Louis hospital for treatment. 

NAYLOR, GREENVILLE, AND DONIPHAN ALL PICK UP WINS ON FIRST DAY OF OFC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT

The Ozark Foothills Conference baseball tournament continues today with the semi-finals at Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff.

Naylor advanced to the semi-final round with a 3-1 victory over East Carter. Greenville jumped on Clearwater early in their quarterfinal matchup, cruising to a 12-0 victory. Naylor will take on Greenville today at 1 pm.

The final game of Monday saw Doniphan picking up the victory over Neelyville 9-3. Doniphan advances to the semi-finals where they will take on top seed Twin Rivers. First pitch for that game is scheduled for 3:30 pm today.

MAN ARRESTED IN STODDARD COUNTY ON WEAPON AND DRUG CHARGES

Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested a Bertrand man on weapon and drug charges.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 50 year old Keith Coots was taken into custody Sunday morning on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and unlawful use of a weapon.

He is also facing a charge of exceeding the posted speed limit.

Following the arrest, Coots was held at the Stoddard County Jail. 

DATES SET FOR GREENVILLE JACK O’LANTERN JUBILEE

The dates have been announced for the 2022 Greenville Jack O’Lantern Jubilee.

According to the US Army Corps of Engineers, the free event will be held from 5 to 7 pm on October 15th, 22nd, and 29th at the Greenville Campground. 

Officials say that during the jubilee, area businesses, groups, agencies, and creative campers will decorate their campsites and welcome trick-or-treaters into the campground.

Eastbound U.S. Route 60 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform various pavement repairs. 

According to officials, the work zones will be located from Route NN to the Butler County line. 

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., daily.   

CREWS TO BE WORKING ON ROUTE 67 IN BUTLER COUNTY BEGINNING TODAY

Route 67 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane beginning today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform various pavement repairs. 

According to officials, crews will be conducting the repairs from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, through Thursday.

The section of Route 67 to be impacted is located between Route MM and the Missouri State line.

QUARTERFINALS OF OFC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT SET FOR TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

The Ozark Foothills Conference baseball tournament is scheduled to begin today.

Three Rivers College, in Poplar Bluff, will be hosting this year’s tournament, featuring seven area schools. 

The quarter-finals will be held today, starting off with East Carter vs. Naylor at 10 am, followed by Greenville vs. Clearwater at 12:30 pm, and Neelyville vs. Doniphan at 3 pm.

CROSSING ARM CAMERAS TO BE INSTALLED ON POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL DISTRICT BUSES

Next week is National School Bus Safety week and officials at the Poplar Bluff School District are taking extra steps to ensure the safety of students.

According to Poplar Bluff School District Transportation Director Jon McKinney, the school district will be installing crossing arm cameras on district school buses over the next few weeks.

McKinney adds that video footage from drivers who pass buses when students are being dropped off or picked up will then be submitted to area authorities. 

MISSOURI STATE HIGHWAY PATROL COLLECTING TOYS FOR CHILDREN’S HOSPITALS

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is collecting toys for the sixth Annual Trooper James Bava Toy Drive.

The Toys can be dropped at the Trope E Headquarters, two miles north of Poplar Bluff and will be donated to the St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Mercy Children’s Hospital in Kansas City.

Trooper Bava was 25 years old when he died in the line of duty on August 25th, 2015. His mother started the toy drive in his memory.

CITY OF VAN BUREN TO RECEIVE OVER THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR NEW FACILITY

The city of Van Buren will be receiving over $300,000 to build a new facility.

According to the Delta Regional Authority, the City of Van Buren will use $313,000 to demolish the existing abandoned, flood-damaged public safety facility.

The funds will also be used to construct a new, elevated facility at the same site for fire services and future law enforcement services.

The funds are a part of an over 2.1 million dollar investment from the Delta Regional Authority that will boost economic development and improve the quality of life for Southeast Missouri communities and residents.

US ROUTE 60 IN STODDARD COUNTY TO BE CLOSED OVERNIGHT

A section of U.S. Route 60 in Stoddard County will be closed overnight tonight as contractor crews perform excavation.

Officials say that due to the equipment in use, a closure of both directions of Route 60 will be necessary between Essex and Morehouse, from Route 153 and Route N to Route 114.

Weather permitting, work will take place from midnight to 3 a.m. tonight.

ROUTE AB IN STODDARD COUNTY TO BE REDUCED THIS WEEK FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS

Route AB in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane early this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs. 

The work zone will be located from Route 25 to Route N near Bloomfield.

Weather permitting, work will take place Tuesday and Wednesday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

ONE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN MOTORCYCLE WRECK NEAR BERNIE

A Bernie man was injured in a motorcycle wreck Thursday afternoon.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 36 year old Jeffery McNece was riding the motorcycle on Highway 25 when he attempted to overtake a vehicle that was making a left hand turn.

The motorcycle struck the vehicle in the driver’s side.

McNece suffered serious injuries and was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital. No injuries were listed for the driver of the vehicle. 

FOOD TRUCK FESTIVAL COMING THIS WEEKEND TO POPLAR BLUFF

Numerous food trucks will be setting up this weekend at Larry Hillis in Poplar Bluff.

The Fall Food Truck Festival will be starting at 11 am on Saturday with around 10 food trucks open for business in the Larry Hillis Parking Lot.

There will also be multiple activities for the entire family, including bounce houses, face painting, cornhole, darts, games, and live music.

14 POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS CHOSEN FOR ALL-DISTRICT CHOIR

Numerous Poplar Bluff High School students have been chosen to participate in the All-District Choir concert in November.

According to school officials, a total of 14 PBHS students were selected for the All-District Choir concert, which will be held at 4 pm on Saturday, November 12th, at Cape Central High School.

During the audition, students were judged on sight-reading and art songs they had prepared. 

PBHS All-District Choir members include:

Alyssa Roy, Ella Skillman, and Victoria Conover in the soprano section; Emma Tinsley, Harley Stilwell, Virginiagrace Vandewarker, and Keira Willis in alto; Gabriel Burke, Bralin Duckett, Jordan Hodge, and Andrew Noble in tenor; and Dawson Vaughan, Elijah Bosch, and Cayden Innes in bass.

TENTH ANNUAL LIBERTY DAYS EVENT SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND

The Stars and Stripes National Museum Library in Bloomfield is hosting its 10th annual Liberty Days event this weekend.

The two day event will be held from 8 am to 4 pm today and tomorrow. Officials say there will be multiple camp sites, live demonstrations, mock battles, food trucks, a silent auction, a photo contest and more.

BULKY ITEM PICK UP TO BE CONDUCTED NEXT WEEK IN POPLAR BLUFF

Poplar Bluff officials are reminding city residents that the city offers bulky item pickups once a month.

Residents can purchase bulk item tags from the city collector’s office at city hall for $20. The tags entitle you to the removal of four bulk items, such as couches or refrigerators. Tires may be collected for a charge of $3 per tire with a limit of four tires.

No construction materials or small items will be picked up and the program is for residential areas only.

Today is the final day this month to purchase item tags to be included in next week’s pick up, which will be conducted on October 11th.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS CAUSING DELAYS NEAR CAMPBELL

Route B in Dunklin County is being reduced so crews can perform pavement repairs. 

The section of roadway impacted by the repairs is located from Bailey Street to County Road 314, near Campbell.

Weather permitting, work is set to take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through Friday, October 13th.  

RAILROAD MAINTENANCE TO BEGIN THIS WEEKEND IN LILBOURN

Route U in New Madrid County will be closed beginning on Sunday as contractor crews perform railroad maintenance. 

According to officials, the closure will be located from Main Street to North 4th Street in Lilbourn.

Weather permitting, work will be performed from Sunday through Wednesday of next week from noon to 5 p.m. each day.

MISSOURI GOVERNOR SIGNS NEW TAX CUT INTO LAW

Missouri’s Governor has signed a new tax cut into law.

Governor Mike Parson signed SBs 3 and 5 and HB 3 during a ceremony on Wednesday at the State Capital.

According to the Governor’s office, SBs 3 and 5 reduces Missourians' income tax liability by making several changes to income tax laws in the state of Missouri, including reducing the top individual income tax rate from 5.2 to 4.95 percent and eliminating the bottom income tax bracket, allowing Missourians to earn their first $1000 tax free.

The new law also eliminates income taxes for individuals making less than $13,000 a year and couples making less than $26,000.

Governor Parson also signed HB 3 into law, which includes the extension and creation of several agriculture tax credit programs intended to help develop key areas of Missouri's agricultural industry. The sunset for each program is for a minimum of six years.

FORMER PIEDMONT POLICE OFFICER INDICTED ON CIVIL RIGHTS CHARGES

A former Police Officer in Wayne County has been officially charged with violating the civil rights of two people and then lying to the FBI about it.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 66 year old Woodrow Massa was indicted by a grand jury in U.S. District Court on Tuesday on two counts of deprivation of rights under color of law and two counts of lying to the FBI.

The indictment says Massa, while a Piedmont police officer, participated in the arrest and detention of two people “despite the absence of an arrest warrant or probable cause.” The arrests both occurred in 2020.

The indictment says Massa lied about the arrest of the first victim twice in FBI interviews by saying he was not present in the booking room while the victim was being processed, despite a video recording depicting his presence there.

Massa is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court on October 13th to answer the charges. Each misdemeanor civil rights charge carries a potential penalty of up to a year in prison, a $100,000 fine, or both. The felony charge of making a false statement carries a penalty of up to five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both.

AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING SHOOTING IN PARAGOULD

Authorities in Northeast Arkansas are investigating a non-fatal shooting.

According to the Paragould Police Department, at around 6:30 pm Tuesday evening, Paragould Emergency Services received a 911 call advising of shots being fired in the 600 block of Magnolia Drive and that one person had been struck.

At the scene, officers located a victim that had a single gunshot wound in one of his limbs.

The victim was transported to a Jonesboro hospital for treatment and later released.

Officials say that the incident is being investigated by the Paragould Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division and there is no reason to believe that the public is in danger as a result of the incident. 

PUBLIC MEETING TO BE HELD IN BUTLER COUNTY TO DISCUSS NEXT PHASE OF FUTURE I-57

A public meeting will be held this month in Butler County to discuss upgrades to US Route 67.

The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold the meeting from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 19th at the Neelyville High School cafeteria.

The proposed project includes upgrading Route 67 to interstate standards from the Route 160/158 interchange south of Poplar Bluff, Missouri to the Missouri/Arkansas state line. The entire project limits are broken down into five phases: Phases 1A and 1B, as well as Phases 2 through 4.

The public meeting will focus on options for future access at Neelyville and Phase 3, which includes upgrading a five-mile section of Route 67 to four lanes from County Road 352 to near County Road 272.

The public meeting will be open house style, and visitors can stop by anytime between 4 and 7 p.m. to discuss the details of the project with the project team.

BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION CAUSES CLOSURE OF PEMISCOT COUNTY ROAD

Construction of five bridges on Route EE in Pemiscot County will cause the closure of the road beginning today.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the bridges are located over Drainage Ditches 1, 65, 251, 258, and 259 near Peach Orchard.

Officials say that beginning today Route EE will be closed from Route A to County Road 229 as the new bridges are tied-into the existing pavement and the final bridge over Drainage Ditch 65 is constructed.

Completion is anticipated by Saturday, December 31st.

ROUTINE BRIDGE REPAIRS SET FOR TODAY IN RIPLEY COUNTY

Route 142 in Ripley County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform routine bridge repairs. 

The section of roadway to be reduced is located between Route P and County Road 160W-17. 

Weather permitting, work will be performed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN IN CUSTODY ON CHILD MOLESTATION CHARGE

A Poplar Bluff man is in custody in Butler County on a child molestation charge.

Butler County Chief Deputy Wesley Popp tells KWOC News that 57 year old Michael Duane Haga was arrested on Monday following allegations that he inappropriately touched a child under the age of 14.

During an interview with a Butler County Deputy, Haga allegedly admitted to the allegations.

Popp says that Haga has been booked into the Butler County Justice Center on charges of child molestation – 1st degree and child endangerment.

His bond was set at $250,000.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING COLLISION IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

One person has died in connection to a crash in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Arkansas State Police, the wreck occurred on US Highway 63 Monday afternoon when a vehicle driven by 76 year old William Henderson, of Ravenden, crossed the center line and struck another vehicle.

Officials say that Henderson was killed in the wreck. The driver of the second vehicle was injured and transported to a Memphis hospital. 

POPLAR BLUFF STUDENT NAMED TO STATEWIDE LEADERSHIP POSITION IN THE BETA CLUB

A Poplar Bluff High School student has been named one of three state leadership representatives in the senior Beta Club.

Beta Club member Emaly Clyburn was named one of the representatives, during the National Beta Leadership Summit last week in Cape Girardeau.

School officials say the award is given annually to deserving Senior Beta members who best demonstrate quality leadership through effective teamwork, inspiration to fellow peers, a courageous attitude and honest character.

As part of her duties, Clyburn will represent National Beta at the 2023/24 leadership summit in Missouri among other tasks.

Emaly will additionally be introduced at the Missouri state convention in March, as well as be invited to take part in the national convention over the summer in Louisville, where she may interview for the role of national leadership representative.

During the summit, a group of 10 participants from PBHS won the ‘National Beta Outstanding Leadership School Award’ and placed in a series of competitions that qualify for nationals, including: Grace Neighbors, Abby Murphy and Hannah Burton in the project proposal category; Rebecca Stevens and Hannah Tinsley in lead outside the box; and Bryden Fuemmeler, Nya Cram, Karlie Lyscas and Ryan Black – collaboration connection.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY

Eastbound U.S. Route 60 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane beginning today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform various pavement repairs. 

The section of roadway impacted by the repairs is located from Route NN to the Butler County line. 

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. both today and tomorrow.

INTERSTATE 55 REDUCED FOR BRIDGE MAINTENANCE IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

Southbound Interstate 55 in Pemiscot County is being reduced to one lane with a 10-ft width restriction as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.  

According to MoDOT, work will be conducted from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. both today and tomorrow. 

The section of Southbound Interstate 55 to be reduced is located from mile marker 16.6 to mile marker 14.8 south of Hayti.

VEHICLE FOUND IN MISSISSIPPI RIVER

A car was found over the weekend in the Mississippi River.

Chief Joey Higgerson with the New Madrid Police Department tells KWOC News that on Sunday a couple reported finding a car in the mud at the bottom of the New Madrid boat ramp.

Higgerson says that no human bones were found in the wreckage, however a license plate that expired in 1985 was pulled from the car.

Since license plates are purged from the system after several years in Missouri, the Highway Patrol is working on identifying the plates.

Higgerson added that the wreckage was marked with caution tape and left for now, pending any developments.

BURN BAN ISSUED FOR CITY OF BERNIE

The continuing dry conditions in Southeast Missouri has caused another community to prohibit burning.

Bernie Mayor James Tilmon has announced that a no born order has been issued for the city until further notice.

Tilmon says that the order includes all outdoor burning within the city limits. 

HIGHWAY PATROL REMINDING MOTORISTS TO LOOK OUT FOR DEER

With fall upon us, Missouri officials are warning motorists to watch for deer.

Colonel Eric T. Olsen, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, tells KWOC News that deer are more active and create hazards for Missouri motorists at this time of year.

The majority of deer strike crashes occur in October and November each year, with the largest number taking place in November. Although deer strikes can occur at any time, most occur between the hours of 6 and 7 am in the morning and 6 to 9 pm in the evening.

Last year, drivers in Missouri experienced over 3,700 traffic crashes where deer-vehicle strikes occurred. One deer strike occurred around every two hours and 18 minutes in the state. In these crashes, there were three fatalities and 420 people were injured.

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY LAUNCHED IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

State officials will be conducting an environmental study in the Missouri Bootheel in connection to US Highway 412.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the study is the first step in planning future capacity improvements for the 20-mile section of U.S. 412 from Route AC near the Arkansas border to just east of Route Y near Kennett.

Officials say that input from stakeholders and the public will be an important part of the study. MoDOT plans to offer multiple opportunities for public input including a public opinion survey, public meetings, and collaboration with a Citizens Advisory Group of local representatives.

All public input opportunities will be posted well in advance on the project website at modot.org/412.

Public input activities are anticipated to begin in early 2023. Field work and technical analysis will begin this fall. The Dunklin County Commission contributed $500,000 toward the completion of the environmental work.

DONIPHAN ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR REPAIRS

 Repairs will force the closure of a road today in Doniphan.

According to city officials, the Doniphan Department of Utilities will be closing the 600 block of Spring Street this morning for main line repairs.

The repairs are scheduled to start at 8 am and no time table was given for when the road will reopen.

Motorists in the area are being encouraged to choose alternate routes.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS UNDERWAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route AB in Stoddard County is being reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs. 

The work zone is located from Route 25 to Route N near Bloomfield. 

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Thursday.

MAN IN CUSTODY FOR ALLEGED RAPE OF A TEENAGER

A man is in custody in Northeast Arkansas following allegations of rape.

According to an arrest affidavit, in early August the Paragould Police Department received information of an inappropriate sexual relationship between a 13 year old female and a 27 year old homeless male that had been staying in her home.

The teenager told police that the male had been staying in her home for approximately two weeks and disclosed multiple different sexual acts that officials say constitute rape by statue.

The man, identified as Blake Alexander Glover, was booked into the Greene County Jail on September 29th on a charge of rape. No bond was set and he is scheduled to appear in court today. 

FOOD TRUCK FESTIVAL COMING THIS WEEKEND TO POPLAR BLUFF

Numerous food trucks will be setting up this weekend at Larry Hillis in Poplar Bluff.

The Fall Food Truck Festival will be starting at 11 am on Saturday with around 10 food trucks open for business in the Larry Hillis Parking Lot.

There will also be multiple activities for the entire family, including bounce houses, face painting, cornhole, darts, games, and live music.

FIELDS OF FAITH TO BE HELD THIS WEEK IN POPLAR BLUFF

Fields of Faith is scheduled for this week in Poplar Bluff.

Fields of Faith is a student led event where various students can pray and share their faith testimonies.

The event will begin at 7 pm on Wednesday, October 5th, at the Poplar Bluff Junior High Football field.

A free tailgate will start at 5:30 pm.

DATES ANNOUNCED FOR 30TH ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS AUTO TOUR

Officials with the US Army Corps of Engineers have announced the dates for the 2022 Festival of Lights Auto Tour.

The 30th Annual Auto Tour will be held at the Redman Creek East Campground from November 25th through December 25th.

This event is being held in partnership with the Wappapello Lake Area Association, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and River Radio. It is supported by businesses, volunteers, churches, organizations, and the community.

CULVERT REPLACEMENT TO FORCE TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF PEMISCOT COUNTY ROAD

Route K in Pemiscot County will be closed early this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway. 

The section of roadway to be closed is located from Route B to County Road 258 near Hayti.

Weather permitting, work will take place today and tomorrow from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.  

PAVEMENT REPAIRS COULD CAUSE DELAYS THIS WEEK ON US HIGHWAY 60 IN CARTER COUNTY

Westbound U.S. Route 60 in Carter County will be reduced this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs. 

According to officials, the work zone will be located from Route M to Route C near Van Buren.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, through Thursday.

TWO IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO SHOOTING IN POPLAR BLUFF

Two suspects are in custody and one injured following a shooting in Poplar Bluff.

Lieutenant Josh Stewart with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that at around midnight Wednesday evening, they received multiple reports of shots fired in the area of Harper and Main Street.

While responding, officers observed a dark colored passenger car leaving the area and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle struck the driver’s side of the Patrol Unit. Three black male subjects then exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

Two of the subjects were apprehended. They have been identified as 18 year old Aijalon Marshall and 19 year old Lonnie Ruff II, both of Poplar Bluff. Both men were taken into custody and booked in the Butler County Jail pending the filing of charges for Resisting Arrest. 

While searching the area of the original report, officers located a 27 year old male from Poplar Bluff suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim was transported to an area hospital. His condition is currently listed as critical, but stable.

The Poplar Bluff Police Department is asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact investigators at 573-785-5776.

FANS TO PINK OUT MULES FOOTBALL STADIUM TONIGHT

Poplar Bluff Mules Football Fans are being encouraged to wear their pinkest clothing for tonight’s game.

The Mules will be hosting the Fox warriors tonight for both Senior Night and the annual Pink Out Game. There will also be a tailgating party held before kick off outside of the stadium.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION RELEASED ABOUT FIERY BUTLER COUNTY WRECK

Updating a story we have been following for you this week, additional information has been released about a fiery Butler County wreck.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred Wednesday evening on US Highway 60, east of Highway Z, when a gas tanker struck the back of a truck.

The tanker then traveled off into the median and overturned, before catching fire.

The driver of the tanker suffered minor injuries in the wreck.

US Highway 60 had to be closed for a period of time while crews were clearing the scene and putting out the fire. 

BUTLER COUNTY FAIR BEGINS TODAY AT RAY CLINTON PARK IN POPLAR BLUFF

The 64th Annual Butler County Fair is set to begin today.

The two day event will be held at Ray Clinton Park in Poplar Bluff. Tonight’s festivities will include the open rodeo. There will also be food trucks and vendors available for visitors.

Coming up on Saturday, the fair will feature an antique tractor show, kid’s zone, and live music.

Today is the final day for parents to get their kids registered for youth basketball in Poplar Bluff.

According to Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation, both boys and girls in 1st through 4th grades can be registered for youth basketball games that will start on November 1st.

The games will be played on Mondays, Tuesdays, and/or Thursdays at the Middle School.

DRY CONDITIONS INCREASE FIRE RISK IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Multiple communities are being asked to not burn anything due to an increased danger of fires.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, low relative humidity, dry fuels, and northeast winds will result in an elevated fire danger over the area each afternoon through Saturday.

Weather officials say that outdoor burning is being strongly discouraged.

Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller has announced that his county will be under a burn ban until further notice.  

GAS TRUCK EXPLODES IN STODDARD COUNTY

Crews were at the scene of an explosion Wednesday afternoon at a business in Stoddard County.

According to authorities, a gas truck exploded at C-Mart in Bloomfield. One person suffered minor injuries in the explosion.

The Missouri Department of Transportation reported that Route 25 in Bloomfield was closed following the explosion, but reopened a short time later.

STODDARD COUNTY HEALTH CENTER HOSTING HEALTH FAIR TODAY

The Stoddard County Health Center will be sponsoring a Community Health and Resource Fair today in Dexter.

Officials say that the fair will begin this morning at the Dexter Parks and Rec Gym on Fairground Drive. The event is for people of all ages to build awareness of health related issues and organizations available in Stoddard County.

There will be health care screenings, services and information, all available free of charge. 

The fair will be open today from 9 am to 2 pm. 

MAN CHARGED WITH AGGRAVATED ASSAULT IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A man has been taken into custody in Northeast Arkansas on an assault charge.

According to authorities, 30 year old Jamal Bender, of Paragould was arrested Tuesday after a report of shots being fired. Witnesses allege that Bender had shot at another person.

Bender was booked into Greene County Detention Center on a charge of aggravated assault.

His bond was set at $10,000. 

TURKEY HUNTERS ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT FEATHERS

Missouri turkey hunters are being encouraged to save and submit feathers from birds they harvest this fall.

Officials with the Missouri Department of Conservation tell KWOC News that the feathers will be used for a research project that will improve their ability to estimate turkey abundance across Missouri.

Hunters who successfully harvest a turkey during either the Archery Deer and Turkey Season or Fall Firearms Turkey Season can voluntarily submit feathers from their turkey at no cost.

Interested hunters are asked to retain a wing and three to five feathers from the breast after Telechecking their turkey. They will then be mailed a feather submission packet, including a postage-paid return envelope to submit feathers at no cost.

POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO PERFORM DURING SENIOR SHOWCASE

Seniors at Poplar Bluff High School will be taking the stage this weekend.

The Poplar Bluff High School Drama Club will present the Class of 2023 ‘Senior Showcase’ at 7 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Kay Porter Theater.

School officials say that the production will feature short skits written and/or directed by seniors, with actors from the High School.

The doors will open 30 minutes before each performance and tickets will be available for five dollars.

PARAGOULD MAN ARRESTED ON TWO CHARGES OF RAPE

A Paragould man is in custody on rape charges in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Paragould Police Department, two separate women reported that they had been sexually assaulted while getting a massage at a local message parlor. Both of the women identified 73 year old Phillip Brinkley as the person who assaulted them.

One of the victim’s reported that the assault occurred in 2012, while the other said their assault happened in 2020.

Brinkley was taken into custody and charged with two counts of felony rape.

Brinkley was arrested earlier this month after a female victim reported that he had assaulted her during a message. While being interviewed by police, Brinkley reportedly gave self-incriminating statements.

Brinkley has been booked into the Greene County Jail.

Parade lights will be shining bright in Downtown Poplar Bluff this December for the 2022 River Radio Lighted Christmas Parade.

Entries are now being accepted for the parade, which is scheduled for 6 pm on Friday, December 2nd. Entry forms are available on our Facebook page and website. The deadline for entries is November 25th.

The parade route this year will run from Highway 142 at McDonalds through downtown Poplar Bluff before looping back and ending at the Black River Coliseum.

WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED AFTER HITTING FREIGHTLINER NEAR DEXTER

A Harviell woman was seriously injured in a two vehicle wreck Tuesday morning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a vehicle, driven by 31 year old Sara Lee, struck the rear of a freightliner on US Highway 60, near Dexter.

Following the wreck, Lee was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital with serious injuries. No injuries were listed for the driver of the freightliner. 

POPLAR BLUFF JUNIOR HIGH RECEIVES GRANT FOR MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS

Grant money will go to improving the mental health of teachers and students at Poplar Bluff Junior High.

According to school officials, gifted teacher Hilary Taylor has been awarded $3,870 through the Louis L. and Julia Dorothy Coover Charitable Foundation to go toward mental health consultation for students and teachers at Poplar Bluff Junior High.

Taylor says she plans to bring in mental health professionals for teachers during collaboration day, and to arrange for consultants to speak with students in groups or one-on-one during academic lab, on top of the school’s guidance counselors and FCC Behavioral Health partners already in place.

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIP RODEO SET FOR OCTOBER

Three Rivers College and the Sikeston Jaycees are teaming up to host the Championship College Rodeo next month.

The Rodeo has been scheduled for October 13th through the 15th at the Art Saunders Arena at the Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo grounds. The rodeo will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday evenings, and 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The Championship is National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association-sanctioned and will feature top competitors from 15 college rodeo teams in the Association’s Ozark Region.

Events will include bull riding, bareback bronc riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, and more.

ROADS IN KENNETT TO BE BLOCKED OFF TODAY FOR THE DELTA FAIR PARADE

Today marks the beginning of the Delta Fair in Kennett and city officials are warning motorists that some streets will be closed this evening.

According to the Kennett Police Department, officers will not allow any west bound traffic on First Street or Saint Francis Street, among others, due to the parade, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm.

If you see anything suspicious during this week’s Delta Fair, Kennett Police Chief Kenny Wilson says you should contact the Kennett Police Department at 573-888-4622 or call 911 if it is an emergency. There will also be officers on the fairgrounds to assist the public. 

DEXTER WOMAN FACING FELONY DRUG CHARGE OUT OF BUTLER COUNTY

A Dexter woman is facing multiple drug related charges following her arrest Sunday in Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 60 year old Roselee Miller was arrested shortly before 9 pm Sunday on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Miller is also facing charges of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while intoxicated – drugs. 

SENIOR HEALTH FAIR SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

A health fair for area residents ages 50 and up will be held today in Butler County.

The free Senior Health Fair from the Butler County Community Resource Council and AmeriCorps Seniors, has been scheduled for 10 am to 2 pm at the Twin Towers in Poplar Bluff.

There will be multiple services available, including health screenings, eyeglass adjustments, vaccinations, and more.

AREA LIBRARY USES GRANT MONEY TO BUY SOLAR POWERED WIFI BENCHES

An area library has used grant money to expand WiFi access in Carter County.

The Carter County Library recently received a Strengthen Missourians Grant from the State Library, which allowed them to purchase three solar powered WiFi benches.

The benches were installed at Fremont Baptist Church, at the East Wood Community Center, as well as The City Hall in Grandin.

Officials say that the benches are for anyone to use and since they are solar powered they will also charge your phones and laptops as well as allow WiFi access.

AREA RESIDENTS INVITED TO TAKE A WALK IN A POPLAR BLUFF PARK

Area residents are being invited to take a walk in the park this weekend in Poplar Bluff.

A Walk in the Park, hosted by the Butler County Wellness Council, will be held from 11 am to 2 pm on Saturday, October 1st, at Hendrickson Park.

The walk will also serve as the kickoff for the month-long Walk-Tober competition. Participants will be tracking how many miles they walk during the month of October with prizes being awarded for the most Mileage tracked.

ONE KILLED IN BUTLER COUNTY WRECK

Crews were on the scene of a fatality wreck Saturday evening in Butler County.

Butler County Coroner Jim Akers tells KWOC News that the two vehicle crash occurred at around 5:50 pm Saturday on County Road 465 near Roxy Road. 

32 year old Gina Eberhart, of Poplar Bluff, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the second vehicle was uninjured.

The Butler County Sheriff’s Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Butler County Coroner’s Office, and Butler County EMS all responded to the scene. 

MAN FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK IN NORTHERN BUTLER COUNTY

An area man was flown from the scene of a single vehicle wreck early Saturday morning in northern Butler County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 21 year old Timothy Gilliam, of Williamsville, was driving on US Highway 67 when his vehicle ran off the roadway and overturned.

Gilliam was ejected during the wreck and flown to a St. Louis hospital with serious injuries. 

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO DRUG ARREST IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A traffic stop Saturday in Clay County led to the seizure of multiple drugs.

Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller tells us that a deputy initiated the traffic stop for a speeding violation on Highway 135. The driver, identified as Justin Trinkle, of Corning, had a suspended driver’s license and is on felony probation.

The deputy executed a probation search on the vehicle and located over 140 grams of a green leafy substance along with $2,249. The Deputy took Trinkle into custody and transported him to the Corning Police Department.

A later search of Trinkle’s residence resulted in the seizing of over 829 grams of a green leafy substance, 29.1 grams of a white powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine, 6.4 grams of white pills identified as hydrocodone, 26 grams of a mushroom candy schedule two, an AR style rifle that had been defaced, and a pistol.

Miller says Trinkle is facing multiple charges including possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of a defaced firearm, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held without bond at the Greene County Detention Center. 

TWO ARRESTED IN MISSOURI BOOTHEEL ON COCAINE CHARGES

Two people were arrested over the weekend in the Missouri Bootheel on cocaine charges.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 33 year old Emmanuel Perez, of Aguascalientes, Mexico, and 21 year old Bryan Gonzalez-Carcega, of Veguita, New Mexico, were each taken into custody on a felony charge of Possession of a controlled substance – cocaine.

Gonzalez-Carcega is also facing a felony charge of unlawful use of a weapon.

Following their arrests, both men were held at the Pemiscot County Jail. 

RESIDENTS REMINDED TO NOT POST SIGNS ON STATE RIGHTS OF WAY

We are less than a month and a half away from the general election and state officials are reminding residents to not post signs on state rights of way.

According to officials, Missouri Department of Transportation policy prohibits installation or maintenance of non-approved items on state right of way.

Non-approved advertising signs or display materials include streamers, garage-sale signs, political signs, banners, and balloons

Officials say that unauthorized signs can create dangerous distractions for drivers and can also pose as obstacles for MoDOT’s roadside forces. 

SURFACE TREATMENT TO CAUSE RAMP CLOSURES TONIGHT AT INTERSTATE 55/US ROUTE 60 CLOVERLEAF

Drivers should expect ramp closures tonight at the Interstate 55, 57, and U.S. Route 60 cloverleaf interchange in Sikeston.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, crews will be working overnight to apply a high friction surface treatment to the pavement of the interchange.

Officials say that work is being done from 7 pm tonight to 7 am Tuesday morning to avoid impacts during peak traffic times.

MAN IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO FATAL SHOOTING

An almost two hour stand-off in Southeast Missouri on Thursday came to an end peacefully. 

According to court information, Larry Greenlee, of Doniphan, has been charged with murder 2nd degree, assault 1st degree, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon.

According to a probable cause affidavit, deputies were dispatched to a residence in Ripley County early Saturday morning in response to a double shooting.

A subject at the residence, identified as Greenlee, told the deputy that he had shot two people that he found in the residence. 49 year old Christina Knowles, of Doniphan, was found dead in the residence.

36 year old Megan Ross, also of Doniphan, was transported to a St. Louis hospital for a gunshot wound to her arm.

Ross told officers that Greenlee had struck her vehicle with his vehicle and then fired multiple rounds into the residence, one of which struck her. Greenlee then allegedly entered the residence and shot Knowles.

Greenlee was taken into custody and pleaded not guilty during his arraignment on Wednesday. A bond appearance hearing has been scheduled for October 5th. 

NEARLY TWO HOUR STAND-OFF ENDS PEACEFULLY IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI 

An almost two hour stand-off in Southeast Missouri has come to an end.

Scott County Sheriff Wes Drury tells us that one subject has been taken into custody following the stand-off near Chaffee.

Shortly before 8:30 am Thursday morning a property owner reported that he heard a gunshot after advising the occupant of a property that he would need to move. The subject, identified as Louis Keller, fired several more shots while deputies were enroute.

Deputies arrived and found Keller barricaded inside a small camper he was staying in on the property. While the Sheriff’s Office and Missouri State Highway Patrol crisis negotiators tried talking to Keller, he fired several more rounds out of the camper.

Sheriff Drury says that shortly before 10:30 am, Keller came out of the camper without incident. No one was injured during the situation and Keller was transported to the hospital for evaluation.

No information was released on what charges Keller could be facing. 

NEW CHIEF NAMED FOR KENNETT FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Kennett Fire Department has a new leader.

Lance Davis has been announced as the new Kennett Fire Department Chief and Director of the Office of Emergency Management Services.

He is a lifelong resident of Dunklin County who has been with the Kennett Fire Department for 21 years.

Davis has served the last three years as the Assistant Fire Chief and Deputy Director of the Office of Emergency Management Services.

He is taking over for Paul Spain who recently retired. 

RODEO SET FOR TONIGHT AT THE STODDARD COUNTY FAIR

The Stoddard County Fair is continuing tonight and on Saturday with multiple events at the Stoddard County FairGrounds.

At 7 pm tonight, the rodeo is scheduled to begin at Arena A. Other entertainment scheduled for tonight include the Back Road Drive Band and Robinson Chainsaw Wood Carvers.

There are numerous events set for Saturday, including the livestock auction, public speech contest, and demo derby.

GRANDIN VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT TO HOST PANCAKE BREAKFAST

The Grandin Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting a fundraising pancake breakfast this weekend.

The event is scheduled to begin at 8 am on Saturday, September 24th at the Doniphan Community Center.

There will be pancakes, bacon, coffee, and orange juice available with plates costing $5 each.

There will also be a variety of baked goods for sale. All proceeds from the pancake breakfast will go to the Grandin Volunteer Fire Department. 

POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS COLLECTING BOTTLE CAPS TO RAISE FUNDS

Students in Poplar Bluff are asking for your bottle caps to help raise funds.

The Poplar Bluff High School Beta Club is collecting teal bottle caps from Dr. Pepper products through January 31st for a chance to win up to $10,000 through the annual Collect the Caps contest, co-sponsored by Pepsi MidAmerica.

School officials say that the Beta Club won $6,000 last year and $2,500 in 2019.

50-gallon barrels have been set up at the Oak Grove Road campus for people to put the bottle caps in.

RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURES SET ON WEDNESDAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

Poplar Bluff’s high temperature on Wednesday eclipsed the previous record high set almost 70 years ago.

According to the National Weather Service, Poplar Bluff reached a high of 99 degrees during the afternoon on Wednesday, breaking the city’s previous record high for September 21st of 98 degrees set back in 1955.

Wednesday also marked the end of the final summer heat wave for the year, as highs in the mid 70’s are expected today and tomorrow.

GROUNDBREAKING SET FOR TODAY ON HIGHWAY 67 IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held this morning to celebrate the beginning of work on the US Route 67/Future Interstate 57 project in Butler County.

The ceremony will begin at 11 am this morning in front of Rice Trailers.

Work on this phase of the project began last month with officials anticipating the phase being complete by November of next year. 

POPLAR BLUFF MAN SENTENCED FOR DISTRIBUTING CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE NEAR SCHOOL

A Poplar Bluff man was sentenced last week for distributing a controlled substance near a school.

According to Butler County Prosecuting Attorney Kacey Proctor 43 year old Alphonse Avila was convicted by a Butler County jury in July of the offenses of distribution of a controlled substance within 2000 feet of a school and delivery of a controlled substance.

Evidence presented during the trial showed that in 2019 Avila sold methamphetamine to an undercover law enforcement officer outside of a residence which was located within 2000 feet of Poplar Bluff Middle School.

Just over two weeks later Avila sold methamphetamine to the same undercover law enforcement officer at Avila’s residence on County Road 603 in Poplar Bluff. Video evidence showed that the second sale took place with small children present.

Last week, Avila was sentenced to 20 years on the class A felony of distribution of a controlled substance in a protected location and 15 years on the class C felony of delivery of a controlled substance. Both sentences were ordered to be served concurrent to each other for a total of 20 years.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN SENTENCED ON FIREARM CHARGE

A Southeast Missouri man is facing almost a decade in federal prison for a firearm charge.

Officials with the United States Attorney’s Office tell KWOC News that 38 year old Duramus Coleman, of Charleston has been sentenced to serve 115 months in federal prison for the charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

According to court documents, on October 22, 2021, a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper conducted a traffic stop of a Chevrolet Monte Carlo with expired license registration tags. Before coming to a stop, the driver attempted to flee and a vehicle pursuit ensued.

The driver later fled from the vehicle and was eventually found in an area residence. The subject was identified as Duramus Coleman and taken into custody without further incident. The trooper returned to the Monte Carlo and observed a pistol in plain-view inside the car.

Coleman was previously convicted of the felony offense of domestic assault in the second degree in Mississippi County and is therefore prohibited from possessing firearms.

MDC OFFERING REPORTS ON COLORS OF FALL FOLIAGE

With temperatures cooling down and trees beginning to change color, the Missouri Department of Conservation is encouraging people to enjoy fall foliage through camping, driving tours, hiking, or even floating.

The autumn equinox will occur at 8:03 pm this evening, ushering in the official beginning of the fall season.

To help Missourians get the best view of fall, the MDC is offering weekly online fall color updates from agency foresters all over the state at mdc.mo.gov/fallcolor.

The weekly reports include what kinds of trees are turning and suggestions on the best places to view them. The updates will run through November.

ADDITION OFFICERS PATROL AREA HIGH SCHOOL FOLLOWING RUMORS OF VIOLENCE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Poplar Bluff police are investigating a rumor of possible violence at the Poplar Bluff High School.

The Poplar Bluff Police Department had additional officers at the High School on Tuesday after they received information about the rumors on social media.

Police officials believe the rumors stem from a fight that had occurred at the school. 

MISSING NORTHEAST ARKANSAS WOMAN FOUND SAFE

Updating a story we brought to you yesterday, a silver alert issued for a missing Northeast Arkansas woman is now over.

According to the Paragould Police Department Diana Gaskill was located safe early Tuesday morning.

The silver alert was issued Monday afternoon for the 73 year old woman. 

POPLAR BLUFF BOARD OF EDUCATION SEEKING COMMUNITY INPUT IN SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH

The Poplar Bluff R-1 Board of Education is seeking community input in their search for the next superintendent for the school district.

Current Superintendent Dr. Scott Dill has announced that he will be retiring at the end of the current school year.

School officials say that an online survey has been created which lists leadership qualities of a superintendent. Community members can indicate the most desired leadership attributes that they perceive the new superintendent should have.

The results of this survey will be used by the board and consultants in seeking and screening applicants as well as for the development of the interview content. A link to the survey is available here.

Officials say the survey will close at 5 p.m. on Monday, October 3rd.

Route W in Butler County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway to be reduced is located from U.S. Route 60 to County Road 525.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily through Thursday. 

ROAD PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Route TT in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane beginning today as contractor crews perform pavement improvements.  

According to MoDOT, the section of roadway to be reduced is located from Route 164 to the Arkansas State line. 

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Monday, October 3rd from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

SILVER ALERT ISSUED FOR MISSING PARAGOULD WOMAN

A silver alert has been issued for a missing woman from the Paragould area.

According to the Arkansas State Police, 73 year old Diana Gaskill has been reported missing and was last known to be at 1301 East Lake Street near East Court Street and 14th Avenue in Paragould.

Paragould police say that Gaskill is possibly suffering from a cognitive disorder.

Gaskill is described as a white female, five feet, three inches tall, weighing 95 pounds, with white straight hair and blue eyes.

Anyone who has information on her whereabouts is asked to contact the Paragould Police Department at 870-236-7621.

STODDARD COUNTY FAIR TO BEGIN TODAY

The 2022 Stoddard County Fair is set to begin this evening.

The fair will kick-off with the parade in downtown Dexter at 5:30 pm.

The Dexter Police Department is reminding everyone to remove their vehicles from Stoddard Street by 4:30 pm this afternoon for the parade.

Dexter police officers will also be handing out water to onlookers during the parade.

There will be multiple nights of entertainment and events throughout the week as a part of the Stoddard County Fair, including performances by Maggie Thorn and the Other Brothers Band.

TWO POPLAR BLUFF TEACHERS RECEIVE GRANT MONEY

Two Poplar Bluff teachers were recently awarded $500 grants from the Missouri Retired Teachers Foundation.

According to school officials, Hilary Taylor, who teaches a game design elective at the Junior High, and High School family and consumer science instructor Missy Cox were each awarded the grants last month.

Taylor’s grant will be used toward the purchase of the multiple games and accessories. Students will be taught the various game mechanics and scoring criteria this semester before being introduced to the steps in the design process.

Taylor’s students will then design, develop and test their own board or card games, including writing an instruction manual. The final product will be presented for a class vote to determine which game is the most playable.

With her grant money, Cox will purchase vacuum sealers, a food mill, jars, and more that will allow advanced foods students to be taught the preservation methods of pickling, water bath canning, freezing, and dehydrating.

HEALTH FAIR SET FOR OCTOBER 12TH IN VAN BUREN

Southern Care and Comfort in Home Agency and Veteran Services will be hosting a health fair next month in Van Buren.

The fair has been scheduled for 11 am to 1 pm on Wednesday, October 12th at 16 Ballpark Road.

There will be information about behavioral health, medical equipment, hospice, and more for area seniors. Attendees can also get a flu shot and their blood pressure checked.

EXPECT DELAYS TODAY ON WESTBOUND US 60 IN STODDARD COUNTY 

Westbound U.S. Route 60 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement testing.

Officials say the testing zone is located between County Road 531 and County Road 517 near Dexter.

Crews are scheduled to be in place through 5 p.m. this evening.
