The health department now reports, there are currently 22 residents in the County who have the virus, including 13 men and 9 women. In addition, two patients are currently hospitalized due to the disease and eight have recovered.

SECOND COVID-19 DEATH REPORTED IN DUNKLIN COUNTY; NEW CASES IN DUNKLIN AND BUTLER COUNTIES

A second patient has died in Dunklin County due to the COVID-19 virus.

Dunklin County also reported its 18th positive case on Thursday, and Butler County has confirmed another case of the disease, making it the 20th case of the County. In Butler County, there have been at least 513 residents that have tested for the disease.

Officials with the Counties’ Health Departments are working with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, as well as the CDC, to find and contact any individuals who may have been exposed to the disease while the patients were active.

As of Thursday, there have been a total of 5,111 cases of the coronavirus in Missouri, and 152 deaths have been reported due to the disease.

If you are showing any symptoms of the virus, including persistent coughing, fever, and shortness of breath, you are advised to contact your primary healthcare provider before visiting a hospital. Residents are also being reminded to keep social distancing guidelines, and to continue practicing good hygiene to help curb the spread of the disease.

HOUSE DAMAGED IN STRUCTURE FIRE IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

A house in Portageville was heavily damaged in a structure fire early Thursday morning.

According to the Portageville Fire and Rescue Department, the department received a call about a structure fire at 6th and LeSieur, where a single story home was engulfed in heavy flames by the time crews had arrived at the scene.

The house was vacant at the time, however the fire was beginning to spread to surrounding houses, which still had residents inside. Firefighter crews were able to stop the flames before extensive damage could be done to the neighboring homes.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and under investigation, however it is suspected that it may be an arson case.

TWO INJURED FOLLOWING VEHICLE COLLISION IN STODDARD COUNTY

Two people were injured from a vehicle crash in Stoddard County on Thursday.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that a vehicle was traveling eastbound on US 60, east of Dexter, before coming up on and striking the rear of another vehicle.

An occupant of the traveling vehicle received moderate injuries, and an occupant of the struck vehicle suffered minor injuries from the crash. Both were transported to a hospital in Cape Girardeau for treatment.

MISSOURI GOVERNOR MIKE PARSON EXTENDS STATEWIDE STAY AT HOME ORDER

Missouri Governor Mike Parson has announced that the statewide stay at home order is being extended.

The decision was announced in a press conference Thursday afternoon, where Governor Parson declared that the stay at home order is being extended to May 3rd, and stated that the extension would hopefully help improve the conditions of healthcare workers and first responders, by monitoring hospitals and health care providers who are directly handling cases of the COVID-19 virus.

Several projects will take place during the stay at home extension, including expanding current testing capacity, opening public and private supply chains, and monitoring data from hospitals housing COVID-19 patients, lab tests, and health care facilities.

Parson also stressed the importance of keeping social distancing in mind when traveling or going outside your home, and that the state would only reopen once testing for the disease is at a good level.

POLICE DEPARTMENTS WARNING RESIDENTS OF COVID-19 WARNING SCAM

Police Departments across the state are warning residents about a phishing scam related to the COVID-19 virus outbreak.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, a number will text you stating that you were exposed to the coronavirus through contact with an active patient, and will send you a link claiming to have either information or instructions regarding the disease.

If you receive one of these text messages, you are advised to not click on the link, and to report the number to your local Police Department.

MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN NEW MADRID COUNTY ON SEX TRAFFICKING CHARGE

A man was arrested in New Madrid County on Thursday on a sex trafficking charge.

According to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department, 31 year old James Merritt, of Morehouse, was taken into custody on a felony New Madrid County Sheriff’s Office Warrant on sex trafficking.

Following his arrest, he was transported to the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office.

PET FOOD PANTRY SCHEDULED TO REOPEN IN POPLAR BLUFF

The Animal Welfare Alliance will be reopening its pet food pantry this weekend.

The organization originally opened the pantry on April 2nd, and was used to give away free pet food to owners who either couldn’t find any, or could no longer afford to buy any due to complications with the COVID-19 virus. However, due to a shortage of food, it had to temporarily close its doors.

The pantry will be opening again on Sunday, from 2 to 5:30 pm at the former Orscheln building in Poplar Bluff. Residents of Butler, Wayne, Carter, and Ripley Counties will be given preference with pet food distribution.

GOVERNOR MIKE PARSON TO ADDRESS MISSOURI’S STAY AT HOME ORDER THIS AFTERNOON

Governor Mike Parson will address Missouri’s Stay-at-Home order during his daily COVID-19 briefing at 3 pm today.

Gov. Parson announced he is looking at plans to re-open the state after having multiple conversations with local elected officials and other governors. The governor hinted there will be changes made in the coming days during his address on Wednesday.

At this time, it is not clear if the order will be extended or if the governor will begin to ease some of the restrictions.

Parson said testing and social distancing are the most important factors in getting the spread of COVID-19 under control and putting the state’s economy back on track.

COVID-19 testing is one of the factors Parson is looking at in re-opening the state. He said once testing is where it needs to be, Missouri can reopen.

COVID-19 RELATED DEATH CONFIRMED IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

A person has died in Dunklin County due to complications with the COVID-19 virus.

According to the Dunklin County Health Department, a patient with the coronavirus died on Wednesday morning from the disease, and the department is currently working on gathering information and details from currently recovering patients.

There are currently 17 people in the County who have the virus, including 8 men and 10 women, and Butler County reported its 19th positive case on Wednesday, which makes up 11 men and 8 women.

In Missouri, there have been a total of 4,895 positive cases as of Wednesday, and 147 deaths have been reported in the state that are directly linked to the COVID-19 virus.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE SEARCHING FOR WOMAN IN THEFT CASE

Officials with the Poplar Bluff Police Department are searching for the identity of a female in a theft case.

According to the department, a woman entered a store on Wednesday and was caught on video surveillance when she stole a credit card. A video of the suspect is available on the Poplar Bluff Police Department’s Facebook Page.

TWO INJURED FOLLOWING VEHICLE CRASH IN STODDARD COUNTY

A driver and juvenile occupant were injured from a vehicle crash in Stoddard County on Wednesday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on Route J in Asherville, where a vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway before striking a tree, causing the vehicle to overturn.

The driver and a child occupant both received moderate injuries as a result of the crash, and were transported to a hospital in Dexter for treatment.

MAN ARRESTED ON POSSIBLE INVOLVEMENT IN MURDER CASE

A man has been taken into custody on possible involvement in a recent murder case.

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, an unnamed person of interest has been arrested in the case of Larry Boyer, who was murdered on February 16th this year. The individual was booked by a Missouri agency, and is currently being held on undisclosed charges.

The individual has yet to be formally charged, and more information on the person and his involvement will be released as the investigation proceeds.

THREE RIVERS MOVES TO FULL ONLINE CLASSES FOR NEW TERM

Three Rivers College will be continuing to use only online instruction for the summer classes.

President Wesley Payne stated that all classes from the college transferred to online on March 23rd, with a work from home policy being set a week later for all employees. The online only learning will persist throughout the summer semester, and the situation will be reviewed after it is completed.

Registration for the semester's classes will also be restricted to online, and will persist until the state’s stay at home order is lifted.

DRIVER INJURED FROM VEHICLE CRASH IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Injuries were reported on Wednesday following a vehicle crash that took place in Dunklin County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that a vehicle was traveling down Missouri 25, north of Kennett, before running off the roadway and overturning.

The driver was moderately injured from the crash, and was transported to a hospital in Paragould.

ROAD SCHEDULED TO CLOSE IN STODDARD COUNTY FOR BRIDGE REPAIRS

A road in Stoddard County is set to close while bridge maintenance is being performed.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, a section of Route Z, between County Road 755 and 779, will be closed while contractor crews perform bridge maintenance to a drainage ditch.

The road will close on Tuesday, and will remain closed until June 5th.

BUTLER COUNTY HOLDING CARING TOGETHER EVENT TODAY

Butler County will be participating today in an All Caring Together and Serving day to help families and homes that have been affected by the COVID-19 virus.

According to the Butler County EMA, the day will be used to help the County, and its residents, overcome and help reduce the strain that the disease has caused in the last few months, and there are a few ways that individuals can help.

This includes making wellness calls to homes that are suffering from the impact of the virus, making masks to donate to front line workers, and making donations to help with the financial needs of the community who are suffering the most.

You can also donate non-perishable food items, cleaning supplies, paper products, hygiene items, fabric, and elastic to the Libla Family Sports Complex from 3 pm to 7 pm.

The Animal Welfare Alliance will also be accepting donations on the campus of animal food, or money to buy animal food, to give to pet owners who can’t afford to buy any.

FORMER 35TH JUDICIAL CIRCUIT JUDGE PASSES AWAY AT 75

Former Judicial Circuit Judge Steve Sharp has passed away at the age of 75.

Sharp’s death was announced on Saturday, where he died at a hospital in Memphis.

After practicing at the McHaney-Welman Law Firm in Kennett, he began his law practice in 1972, where he worked as a private practitioner as a prosecutor, before serving five years as a prosecutor for Dunklin County. He went on to work in the Missouri Senate from 1984 to 1988.

Before his retirement in 2012, Sharp had served as the longest presiding circuit judge for the 35th Judicial Circuit, and both current and former Circuit Judges from Dunklin and Stoddard Counties are mourning his loss.

ROADS IN BUTLER AND STODDARD COUNTY SCHEDULED FOR REDUCTION

There are roads in Butler and Stoddard Counties that will be reduced for road work.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route 160 in Butler County will be reduced while bridges between Route F and County Road 485 are under repairs. The work will be performed today from 7 am to 4:30 pm.

A section of Route Y in Stoddard County, between Route P and County Road 385, will also be reduced while crews are performing bridge maintenance. The bridge maintenance will take place from today until Thursday, from 7 am to 4:30 pm daily.

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN SHOOTS MAN IN ALLEGED ASSAULT

A Poplar Bluff woman is being accused of shooting a man in an alleged assault on Monday.

According to authorities, a 23 year old woman turned over a handgun to the Butler County Sheriff’s office after admitting to shooting her boyfriend in the stomach.

She went on to say that she was arguing with her 32 year old boyfriend, Cody Vaughn, when he struck her in the face. The woman also claimed that she wasn’t intending to shoot Vaughn, but was trying to fire a warning shot.

After the shooting, Vaughn fled from their home on the 100 block of Regency Lane, before going to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center for treatment. He was transported by air to the Saint Fraincis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, where he is currently hospitalized in a stable condition.

Witness reports say that he had been yelling at the woman at their house over a money dispute, before he slapped her across her face. Reports also say that he raised his hand to hit her again, before the woman pulled out her firearm and shot him in the stomach.

No charges have been filed, and the case is currently pending review.

NEW CONFIRMED CASE OF COVID-19 VIRUS REPORTED IN BUTLER COUNTY

Another positive case of the COVID-19 virus has been reported in Butler County.

According to the Butler County Health Department and Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, the patient has been self-quarantined at their homes, and is being monitored. Individuals who are at risk of exposure from when the patient was active will be contacted.

There are now 18 positive cases of the virus in Butler County, and six patients have recovered.

In Missouri, there have been a total of 4,686 positive cases since Tuesday, and there have been 133 reported deaths directly linked to the disease.

DRIVER INJURED FROM VEHICLE CRASH IN BUTLER COUNTY

A driver was injured following a vehicle crash in Butler County on Tuesday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on County Road 451, north of Stringtown, where a vehicle swerved to miss an oncoming deer, causing it to run off the roadway and overturn.

The driver received minor injuries as a result of the crash, and was transported to a hospital in Poplar Bluff.

MISSOURI HEALTHCARE OPENING CORONAVIRUS TEST COLLECTING SITE

Missouri Highlands Health Care will be opening a COVID-19 test collection site in Poplar Bluff today.

According to the department, the testing center will be an appointment only location where individuals who meet requirements will be able to be tested for the disease. The center will open at 8:30 am, and is located at the Mansion Mall parking lot.

To schedule an appointment, call their Nurse Coronavirus Hotline at 573-727-8285, which will give you direction on a pre-screening that is necessary before an appointment can be made.

The hotline is available on Mondays through Fridays, from 8:30 am to 5 pm daily.

TWO SUSPECTS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY FOLLOWING ATTEMPTED THEFT

Two were arrested in Poplar Bluff after they attempted to steal from a hotel cash drawer.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, 17 year old Derrick Leonard, of Kennett, was caught in the lobby area of the Comfort Inn in Poplar Bluff, attempting to steal money from a hotel cash drawer, before returning the stolen property and moving back to his room.

After returning, he and two others fled from the hotel, where Leonard and a 14 year old female were found and taken into custody on Three Rivers Boulevard. Another suspect, 19 year old James Clark, of Memphis, was found inside a dumpster near the Missouri Department of Natural Resources building around 30 minutes later.

Clark was allegedly found with a firearm in his possession, and all three were transported to the Poplar Bluff Police station. Clark was formerly arrested on suspicion of possession of a stolen firearm, and Leonard was charged on theft.

Both were transported to the Butler County Jail after their official arrests.

JUVENILE INJURED FOLLOWING VEHICLE CRASH IN WAYNE COUNTY

A juvenile was injured while sitting inside a vehicle in Wayne County on Monday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident occurred on private property east of Silva, where a child was sitting in the driver's seat of a vehicle while it was going downhill, before it started sliding and overturned.

The juvenile received minor injuries from the incident, and was transported to a hospital in Poplar Bluff for treatment.

TWO ADDITIONAL CASES OF COVID-19 CONFIRMED IN BUTLER COUNTY

A few more cases of the coronavirus have been reported in Butler and Dunklin Counties.

According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, two new cases have been reported in Butler County, and Dunklin County has recorded its 16th positive case.

The currently active cases in Butler County include 8 males and 5 females, and 6 previous patients have recovered. There are currently 7 cases that are unknown. Information on these cases are still being gathered, and two patients are currently being treated at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center.

There have been a total of 4,388 cases reported in Missouri as of Monday, and there have been 114 deaths recorded due to the disease. MAN ARRESTED IN STODDARD COUNTY ON DRUG AND BURGLARY CHARGES

A Dexter man was taken into custody in Stoddard County on drug and burglary charges on Monday.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 27 year old Matthew Snider was booked on a 1st degree burglary charge, possession of a controlled substance except 35 grams or less of marijuana/synthetic cannabinoid, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following his arrest, he was booked at the Stoddard County Jail on a $15,000 cash only bond.

INVESTIGATION ONGOING FOR SEMI CAB FIRE IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

An investigation is ongoing for a semi-truck cab fire in Portageville on Monday.

According to the Portageville Fire and Rescue Department, the department received a call early morning Monday about a semi-truck cab that caught fire at a gas station on Highway 162, where it was fully engulfed by the time crews had arrived.

No one was inside the cab during the fire, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

ROAD IN STODDARD COUNTY SCHEDULED FOR REDUCTION

A road in Stoddard County will be reduced while it undergoes repairs.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, a section of Route H, between Route 25 and County Road 607, will be reduced to one lane while MoDOT crews perform drainage repairs.

The work is set to take place from today until April 23rd, from 7:30 am to 4 pm daily.

Butler County Reports Two More COVID-19 Cases; 2 Patients Recovering from COVID-19 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center

JUVENILE WOUNDED FROM ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING IN BUTLER COUNTY

A juvenile from Butler County was transported to a hospital on Friday after being accidentally shot in the head.

According to the Butler County Sheriff’s Department, a juvenile was handling a low caliber firearm before he accidentally shot his younger brother in the head. Following the shooting, the victim was transported by air to a hospital in St. Louis for treatment. He is now out of surgery, and in a critical but stable condition.

The Sheriff’s Department urges residents to keep the importance of gun safety in their minds during this time, especially around children.

MISSOURI STATE HIGHWAY PATROL EXTENDS CLOSURES FOR DRIVER TESTS AND INSPECTIONS

The Missouri State Highway Patrol extended the closures on driver tests and salvage inspections on Friday.

According to the Patrol, all written and driver road testing, as well as salvage inspections at all locations throughout the state, will continue to remain closed due to the growing concerns over the COVID-19 virus spread.

The locations will remain closed until April 27th, unless further extended.

JUVENILE INJURED FOLLOWING VEHICLE CRASH IN BUTLER COUNTY

A juvenile was injured from a vehicle crash in Butler County on Friday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash happened on US 67, north of Poplar Bluff, where a vehicle had a blowout while traveling, causing it to run off the roadway and into the median.

The young occupant received minor injuries as a result of the crash, and was transported to a hospital in Poplar Bluff for treatment.

MORE CASES OF COVID-19 CONFIRMED IN SOUTHEAST COUNTIES; TOTAL CASES IN MISSOURI PEAKS 4K

Additional cases of the coronavirus were confirmed in Butler, Dunklin, and Ripley Counties.

According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Butler and Dunklin Counties now both have a total of 15 cases, with Butler confirming five additional cases, and Dunklin three over the weekend.

Ripley County reported its third positive case of the virus, and all of the patients have been quarantined. Each case is being monitored by the Counties Health Departments, as well as the CDC, and will contact any individuals who may have been exposed while the patients were active.

As of Sunday, there are a total of 4,160 cases of the COVID-19 virus in Missouri, and 110 deaths have been directly linked to the disease.

PORTAGEVILLE MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON BURGLARY CHARGES

A man from Portageville was arrested on Friday for burglary charges.

According to the Portageville Police Department, 20 year old Ian Torrey was taken into custody following an investigation into several alleged burglaries in March, and has been charged with burglary 1st degree, and a felony charge on stealing.

He was transported to the New Madrid County Jail following his arrest.

ROAD SCHEDULED TO CLOSE IN WAYNE COUNTY FOR REPAIRS

A road will be closed in Wayne County, and a bridge will be reduced in Butler County, while crews perform repairs.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Business 60 in Butler County, located between East Pine Street and Old Route B, will be reduced while it undergoes bridge repairs. The repairs will be held from today until Tuesday, from 6 am to 4 pm daily.

A section of Route Z in Wayne County, west of Route TT, will also be closed while crews replace a pipe underneath the roadway. The work is scheduled to take place from 9 am to 2 pm today.

MAN ARRESTED IN WAYNE COUNTY ON DRUG POSSESSION CHARGES

A Jackson man was taken into custody in Wayne County on Sunday on drug related charges.

According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, 66 year old Bailey Mark was arrested on felony possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine, as well as unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following his arrest, he was transported to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

Juvenile air lifted to a St. Louis Hospital Following Accidental Shooting in Butler County

Authorities in Butler County are investigating after what appears to be an accidental shooting.

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News, around 3:15 Friday afternoon, officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1800 Block of County Road 316 off of Highway UU, in reference to an accidental shooting.

Few details are being released at this time, however Sheriff Dobbs says his office is still investigating, but preliminary findings show this was an accidental shooting involving two juveniles, in which a 22 long rifle struck one of the juveniles in the head.

Following the incident the juvenile was air lifted to a St. Louis Hospital. At this time, the condition of the juvenile is unknown.

Sheriff Dobbs says, “This situation reminds us of gun safety, especially with so many kids at home during this pandemic situation.”

Due to the circumstances of the incident, KWOC News will not be releasing the ages of the juveniles involved.

COVID-19 Cases on the Rise: Butler County Health Department Confirms 5 New Cases of COVID-19; Bringing Total Positive Cases to 15

Butler County may be starting to see an uptick of COVID-19 cases. Butler County Health Department Case Manager and Prevention Specialist Amanda Fitzwater tells KWOC News, they have confirmed five new cases of COVID-19. Since Monday, 11 cases have been reported.

Local Health Department staff will be monitoring the cases and additional follow up contacts will be done. They have already received a list of people from each patients’ contacts.

This patients are self-quarantining at their homes, according to health officials. No other information will be released about the patients.

The health department reports there are 15 positive cases of COVID-19 in Butler County.

The Butler County Health Department is working with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services and the CDC, to identify and contact people who may have come in contact with the individuals, while they were infectious and will monitor them for fever and respiratory symptoms.

ONE TEENAGER DEAD AND THREE OTHERS SERIOUSLY INJURED FOLLOWING VEHICLE CRASH IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

A death has been reported, and three others were severely injured from a vehicle crash in Dunklin County on Thursday.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that a vehicle ran off the left side of Highway NN, north of the Arkansas State Line, before striking a utility pole and overturning.

A 16 year old occupant was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, with the 16 year old driver, as well as a 17 year old and 19 year old passenger, suffering serious injuries from the incident.

The three injured were transported by air to a hospital in Memphis.

ADDITIONAL CHARGES FILED AGAINST PIEDMONT MAN IN STABBING INVESTIGATION

A Piedmont man has been charged with additional felony charges in a recent stabbing investigation.

32 year old Daniel Adams was initially charged on March 26th for the murder of his mother, 57 year old Gabrielle Gamble, who was found dead in her garage with multiple stab wounds.

Officials with the Piedmont Police Department went to her home to perform a wellness check, where Adams reported that she had been absent from the home for the last few days. The officers searched the home, and found Gamble wrapped in a carpet covered with tires and sandbags.

When questioned, Adams told the investigators that Gamble had allegedly struck him in the head, and that he retaliated, striking her and stabbing her multiple times. After hiding the body, he cleaned the scene of the crime, as well as the knife and clothes he was wearing.

Adams is scheduled to appear in court on April 23rd, for felony charges on 1st degree murder, armed criminal action, tampering with physical evidence, and abandonment of a corpse.

RESIDENTS OF MISSOURI REMINDED TO FOLLOW COVID-19 PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

Residents of Missouri are being asked to stick close to the present countermeasures for stopping the spread of COVID-19 this Easter.

The Butler County Health Department is requesting that individuals who are celebrating Easter and the Passover stay at home, and report that the upcoming weeks are crucial for keeping up with preventative measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus, including washing your hands frequently, keeping a 6 foot social distance from others, and only leaving your home for emergencies.

It’s been recommended that residents find alternative ways to celebrate Easter and view prayer services, such as using an online service. Attending in person prayer services, congregating in public areas such as parks, and inviting friends and family to your home are all highly discouraged.

Churches and organizations that wish to create an online service for the holiday are advised to ask their local public health department for assistance.

MISSOURI GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES ALL PUBLIC AND CHARTER SCHOOLS WILL REMAIN CLOSED

Missouri Governor Mike Parson has announced that all Missouri schools will be closed for the remainder of the academic year.

The order was announced yesterday, and states that all Public and Charter schools in Missouri will remain closed for the year, with the exception of any nutrition services and meal delivery programs in the recent health orders. Many schools will be continuing their courses through remote learning until the end date previously set on the academic calendars.

With this announcement, the Missouri State High School Activities Association has canceled all remaining postseason events for the current school year.

TWO ADDITIONAL CASES OF COVID-19 CONFIRMED IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Two more positive cases of the COVID-19 virus have been reported in Dunklin County.

According to the Dunklin County Health Department and Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, the County’s 11th and 12th cases were reported on Thursday, and the patients have been moved to quarantine.

The departments are working together to locate and contact anyone who may have been exposed while the patients were active.

As of Thursday, the total number of cases in Missouri has risen to 3,539 positive cases, and 77 deaths have been directly linked to the disease.

APPRECIATION GATHERING TO BE HELD TONIGHT IN POPLAR BLUFF

Butler County EMS is hosting a healthcare appreciation event tonight to thank local healthcare workers for their service during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Local First Responders will be gathering together with the public in their vehicles at the front of the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center tonight at around 7:30 pm, and will turn on their hazard lights at 8 pm to show the hospital workers that the community is there supporting them.

Children are encouraged to make and hang posters on your vehicles during the event, and it is requested that all participants stay inside their vehicles during the proceedings. Private vehicles are being asked to park in the regulated parking spots, and to not block entry ways for emergency vehicles.

MULTIPLE NEW CASES OF COVID-19 CONFIRMED IN BUTLER COUNTY

There have been several cases of the COVID-19 virus in Butler County since Wednesday.

According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, four positive cases of the virus were reported in Butler County, bringing the total number of cases in the County to ten. Dunklin County has also reported its tenth patient, and officials with the County’s Health Department are reminding residents to continue practicing social distancing and hygiene guidelines.

All patients have been quarantined, and the Counties’ Health Departments are working with the CDC to locate, and contact anyone who may have come into contact with the patients when they were active. If you are showing symptoms such as coughing, fever, or shortness of breath, it is recommended that you contact your primary health provider before visiting a hospital or emergency room.

As of Wednesday, the total number of positive cases of the virus in Missouri was recorded at 3,327, and 58 deaths have been reported.

MAN IN STODDARD COUNTY ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE FELONY CHARGES

An Essex man was taken into custody on Wednesday in Stoddard County on several felony charges.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, 30 year old Curby Easterwood was arrested on a felony charge for resisting arrest, as well as tampering with physical evidence.

He was also charged on felony possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following his arrest, he was transported to the Bollinger County Sheriff’s Office.

INJURIES REPORTED FROM CAR CRASH IN RIPLEY COUNTY

A driver suffered moderate injuries as a result of a vehicle crash in Ripley County on Wednesday.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that the crash happened on US 160, 4 miles west of Doniphan, where a vehicle ran off the roadway and struck a rock.

Following the incident, the driver of the vehicle was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital for his injuries.

POPLAR BLUFF FACTORY SET TO PARTIALLY RESUME OPERATIONS

The Briggs and Stratton factory in Poplar Bluff is preparing to resume partial operations next week.

The factory had temporarily suspended operations in March because they were unable to obtain component parts due to complications with the spreading coronavirus, which led to the decision to shut down until April 13th.

Under the regulations of the recent stay at home order and social distancing guidelines in Missouri, some workers will be returning to their shifts on Monday, and the company has stressed that they are taking many precautions against the spreading COVID-19 virus.

POPLAR BLUFF RESIDENT INJURED IN VEHICLE CRASH IN BUTLER COUNTY

A Poplar Bluff resident was injured following a vehicle crash in Butler County on Wednesday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a vehicle ran off the left side of County Road 542, north of Poplar Bluff, before overturning.

The area driver suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash, and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital for treatment.

CITY IN NEW MADRID COUNTY UNDER PRECAUTIONARY BOIL WATER ORDER

Some parts of the City of Gideon in New Madrid County are currently under a boil water order.

The precautionary boil water order has been set for areas from 4th Street to South Anderson Avenue, including both sides of 4th Street and both sides of Main Street.

The order was reportedly put in effect due to a main water line breaking, and it is not known at this time when it will be fixed.

DOWNTOWN POPLAR BLUFF HOSTING ONLINE PHOTO CONTEST

Downtown Poplar Bluff will be hosting an online photo contest starting today.

The contest involves taking and posting pictures of downtown Poplar Bluff, and the winner will be given a gift card to a local business. ENHANCED RISK FOR SEVERE WEATHER INCLUDING A FEW TORNADOES POSSIBLE TONIGHT IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS 

Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas could see severe weather tonight. 

According to officials with the National Weather Service in Paducah, a chance of thunderstorms will spread across our region later this evening and overnight. 

Severe weather is possible with this system, especially across Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas this evening. The entire region is currently under an enhanced risk for severe weather. 

The main hazards will be damaging winds, very large hail, but a few tornadoes may be a concern as well. 

CONFIRMED CASES OF CORONAVIRUS REPORTED IN STODDARD AND BUTLER COUNTIES

There have been more confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, as well as the Counties Health Centers, Butler County has reported two new cases of the virus, Stoddard County its eighth, and Dunklin County has confirmed its ninth positive case of the disease.

The patients are currently in quarantine, and the Departments are working to identify and contact anyone who may have been exposed to the virus while the patients were active.

As of Tuesday, there have been a total of 3,037 total confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus, and 53 deaths have been directly reported to the disease.

County officials urge residents to not panic, and to continue practicing social distancing and safety guidelines. If you are showing symptoms, it is recommended that you first contact your health provider before going to a hospital.

OZARK RIVERWAYS SEARCHING FOR SUSPECTS IN WILDFIRE INCIDENT

Officials with the Ozark National Riverways are searching for suspects involved in a wildfire incident that took place recently.

There are multiple arson attempts reported each year in the area, and up to $10,000 is being offered as a reward for information that can lead to finding the suspects of previous arson cases.

DISASTER RECOVERY ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE TO SOME SOUTHEAST MISSOURI COUNTIES

There is a disaster recovery and funding assistance program that will be in effect for the next few months.

According to the Ozark Foothills Regional Planning Commission, on-call appointments are available to discuss eligibility for the assistance, which includes voluntary residential buyout, and relocation, down payment, and tenant relocation assistance.

This service is available for residents of Doniphan, Van Buren, and Carter Counties until May 15th, and can be found by calling 573-785-6402 on Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 4 pm.

MISSOURI GOVERNOR ISSUES IMPLEMENTATION OF FEDERAL PANDEMIC COMPENSATION PROGRAM

Missouri Governor Mike Parson has announced an implementation of $600 for the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation Program.

The Governor made the announcement in a briefing over the COVID-19 virus yesterday, and discussed that the FPUC will provide an additional $600 per week of federal supplement funds for those eligible for at least one dollar of unemployment compensation benefits.

Payments are expected to be sent to eligible recipients who filed for unemployment since and after March 29th, and will begin around April 12th, and will be available until July 25th.

Those who are currently employed and quit will not be eligible for unemployment benefits, including anyone who quits when sick leave is offered by their employer.

SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE THROUGHOUT SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

There is a potential for severe weather in Southeast Missouri this week.

According to the National Weather Service Center in Paducah, a hazardous weather outlook will be in effect throughout Southeast Missouri from today through Monday, and may include thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall.

There will also be a chance of hail and gusty winds, and some storms may be severe, with large hail and damaging winds.

CITY OF NAYLOR SCHEDULED TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARING IN JUNE

The city of Naylor is scheduling a public hearing to be held in early June.

The meeting will be located at the Naylor City Hall’s Council Chambers on 101 North Front Street, and will discuss the Counties submission of an application for the FY 2020 Community Development Block Grant for a new Naylor Nutrition Center.

The city will be requesting around $500,000 in funds to build the new nutrition center, and is set to benefit clientele above the age of 60, including the disabled and homeless.

Representatives will answer public questions, and residents are being encouraged to attend. The meeting will be held on June 9th at 3:30 pm, and more information is available by calling 573-399-2592.

THREE POSITIVE CASES OF COVID-19 CONFIRMED INCLUDING FIRST CASE IN CLAY COUNTY ARKANSAS; TOTAL CASES REACH OVER 2700 IN MISSOURI

Three new confirmed cases of COVID-19 were reported, and the total positive cases of the virus in Missouri has reached over 2,700.

According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Butler County has reported its fourth confirmed case, Dunklin County its eighth, and Clay County Arkansas has reported its first positive case.

As of Monday, the total number of cases in Missouri has reached 2,722, and 39 deaths have been directly linked to the disease.

SHOOTING INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY IN CARUTHERSVILLE

There is an ongoing investigation in Caruthersville regarding three shooting incidents.

According to the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Department, authorities received a call about shots fired on a vehicle just outside city limits on Sunday, and another call an hour later, where a home on 11th and Jefferson Streets had been shot at while the residents were inside, with a vehicle also receiving damage from the gunfire.

Authorities received yet another call about shots fired early morning on Monday, where a vehicle was found with multiple bullet holes in the passenger door. The driver and passenger of the vehicle were found later between 8th Street and Highland Avenue.

The passenger was found with a gunshot wound in his leg, and the driver reported that they were shot at from three males on West 7th Street.

The three suspects in the reported shootings have been located and taken into custody, and formal charges are pending following the investigation into the shootings.

PERMITS AND POLICE DEPARTMENT APPROVED BY POPLAR BLUFF COUNCIL

The Poplar Bluff City Council approved permits for businesses and the funding for a new police station on Monday.

According to the council, drive-thru locations for four businesses, including two new restaurants on Tucker and Shelby Roads, were approved, which includes a new location for the Lemonade House and a secondary location for Foxtrot Coffee.

Additionally, reimbursement to the city’s funds has been issued for expenses involving the new police station being built on Shelby Road, and city manager Mark Massingham reported during a meeting on Monday that the city’s 2020 budget is expected to be cut, due to the businesses that have closed because of the COVID-19 virus spread.

INJURIES REPORTED FROM VEHICLE CRASH IN STODDARD COUNTY

Injuries were reported from a vehicle crash in Stoddard County on Monday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on Two Mile Road, south of Dexter, where a vehicle ran off the left side of the road and overturned, ejecting the driver.

She received moderate injuries from the crash, and was transported to a hospital in Cape Girardeau.

MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN POPLAR BLUFF ON ASSAULT AND DISTURBING THE PEACE

An area resident was arrested in Poplar Bluff on suspicion of assault and disturbing the peace.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, 50 year old Andre Matlock, of Poplar Bluff, was taken into custody on Sunday after he allegedly purposefully coughed on a woman wearing a health mask at Walmart on Thursday.

The woman reportedly has a compromised respiratory system, and when confronted about her mask by Matlock, he supposedly intentionally coughed in her face.

He was booked in the Butler County Jail following his arrest on suspicion of 4th degree assault, and peace disturbance.

BLOOD DRIVE SCHEDULED FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW IN POPLAR BLUFF

There will be an opportunity two straight days to give blood and help save lives.

A Blood Drive has been scheduled for noon to 6 pm, both today and tomorrow, at the Black River Coliseum, in Poplar Bluff.

According to the Red Cross, blood donations are in critical need, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

LAKE WAPPAPELLO CLOSES FACILITIES AND GROUNDS DUE TO COVID-19

There are several grounds and facilities at Wappapello Lake that will be closed due to concerns over the spreading coronavirus.

According to the Wappapello Lake U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the project office, visitor center, all campgrounds, fish cleaning stations, swim beaches, and playgrounds at Wappapello Lake will be closed until further notice, and all reservations through April 30th have been canceled.

Rockwood Point, Sundowner, Peoples, and Redman Creek boat ramps, as well as the Redman Creek, Eagle Point, Greenville, and Spillway day use areas will remain open, however events and sites in the areas will be put on hold until further notice.

MAN ARRESTED IN CARUTHERSVILLE ON ASSAULT CHARGES

A man was taken into custody in Caruthersville on assault related charges.

According to the Caruthersville Police Department, officers received a call about an assault on 12th Street, where a woman at the home reported to authorities that a 35 year old man struck his father in the head with a pot, then struck him and the woman in the head with a shovel when told to leave.

The suspect ran from the house after the assault, and was taken into custody when he was found on the 400 block of West 11th Street.

He is currently being held at the Pemiscot County Jail, and is waiting two charges on assault, 1st degree, two charges of armed criminal action, and possession of a controlled substance.

DRIVER SERIOUSLY INJURED FOLLOWING VEHICLE CRASH IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

A driver was seriously injured in a vehicle crash that took place in Pemiscot County on Monday.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that a vehicle ran off the left side of Route C, north of Deering, which caused the vehicle to strike a ditch.

Following the crash, the driver was transported to a hospital in Blytheville. 

EARTHQUAKE RECORDED IN RANDOLPH COUNTY

An earthquake was reported in Randolph County on Monday.

According to the US Geographical Survey, the earthquake was recorded west of northwest of Jonesboro and Paragould, close to the Missouri/Arkansas State border.

It had a reported magnitude of 2.6, with a depth of around 9 miles.
