CHRIS RUSHIN:

Later this morning we are going to be welcoming Congressman Jason Smith, we’ll have speaker Todd Richardson, Senator Doug Libla is also expected to be with us today and Representative Steve Cookson. It’s an opportunity for us to get out and show our legislators exactly what we do, the incredible work that our kids put in each and every day to combat summer learning loss. You know this is the longest summer vacation in Poplar Bluff R1 School’s history and whenever kids are out of school they have a chance to fall behind. So our kids everyday are working on math, they're working on science, engineering, arts, technology. Our saying for the summer is full steam ahead, so it's really a great day for our kids to show off in front of our legislators to be able to let them know and also our big supporters as well. You know, Boys & Girls Club started back in 1999 locally and the growth over the past 17 years has been absolutely phenomenal. Just as little as six years ago we were doing right around 150 to 180 kids a day in our after school program. Last day of school this year we did 415 kids. We are hopefully going to be expanding again one of these days to some of our neighboring communities, but it's also going to depend on the amount of support we get. We’re hoping that our results will speak for themselves. Seven out of 10 kids are either on the A or the B Honor Roll. In our summer learning program last year 77% of our kids either maintained or improved over the course of the summer. That means that whenever they hit that first day of school they hit the ground running. The teacher does not have to go back and reteach the things that they were back in April and May of the previous year.

Rushin would go on to say that the closed event will begin at 10 am this morning.

BUTLER COUNTY CORONER SAYS HE HAS ASKED FOR GRAND JURY TO BE CONVENED IN CONNECTION TO DEATH OF HEAVENLY HAFFORDButler County Coroner Jim Akers tells KWOC news that he has asked the Butler County Prosecuting Attorney to convene a Grand Jury in connection to the death of 13 year old Heavenly Hafford last December.

Akers says that Hafford was hit by two separate vehicles during the incident:

JIM AKERS GRAND JURY 1:

On December 9th at about 7 p.m. my office was notified of a hit-and-run accident on PP Highway near Maud intersection. We learned that a 13 year old girl had been hit by two separate vehicles. Both drivers left the scene and the girl was pronounced by EMS at the scene. Through the course of this investigation by the Poplar Bluff city police and Missouri State Highway Patrol, the evening of the accident Mr. Sparks was located, along with his vehicle, and it was determined from evidence left at the scene and through their investigation that he was the operator and the owner of the first vehicle involved. Through the course of the investigation, about 10 days later they were able to determine that the owner of the second vehicle Mr. Ben Ressel and his vehicle were involved as a second vehicle in the case, and they were able to provide enough information to get probable cause statements and felt that there was enough probable cause for criminal charges of leaving the scene of an accident.

Akers says that he has asked Butler County Prosecuting Attorney Kevin Barbour to convene a Grand Jury in connection to the investigation.

JIM AKERS GRAND JURY 2:

I have no decision-making process in prosecuting; however I am aware that a grand jury, like a Coroner's jury, can listen to facts. They would listen to the evidence and look at the Missouri laws and determine if there was enough evidence to formally charge Mr. Ressel with felony leaving the scene.

HEAT AND HUMIDITY ALONG WITH SEVERE STORMS POSSIBLE THIS AFTERNOON Heat and humidity are expected over the next couple of days across Southeast Missouri with the chance of severe thunderstorms.

We spoke with Rick Shanklin, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Paducah, about the heat and humidity along the chance of severe weather.

RICK SHANKLIN:

We’re expecting high temperatures today in the mid 90’s and really then again Thursday, perhaps even a couple of degrees warmer on Thursday, then today and you combined that with the humidity across the region really almost oppressive levels, that going to shoot heat indices up around 100 to 105 today and again on Thursday, and that’s just the level that can really begin to cause problems if we don’t do certain safety measures like drinking plenty of fluids, taking plenty of breaks from work through the course of the day, wear light weight to light colored clothing, that’s another very important thing, and in general try to stay cooler. However with the heat and humidity we are going to have across our region today, it’s going to actually help fuel thunderstorms activity in our region and it may be a little more enhanced than some of the other days this week given the fact we have a front inching a bit closer towards the region of those two factors will probably give us a little more coverage but also possibly some more intensity in the thunderstorms, and that’s why we have a slight risk for severe thunderstorms forecast across the region for today. The afternoon hours into the evening probably are going to be the most favorable time as the heats builds throughout the course of the day and also as the front gets a little bit closer.

Shanklin would go on to add by the upcoming weekend, we will see cooler temperatures and lower humidity.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell us that 37 year old James Smith, of Pollard, Arkansas, was riding a dirt bike on County Road 450 in Butler County when the bike travelled off the roadway and struck a rock.

Smith, who was reportedly not wearing a safety device, was taken by ambulance to the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

2nd ANNUAL OUTDOORSMEN WITH A MISSION FIVE STAND SKEET SHOOT SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND

The second annual Outdoorsmen with a Mission Five Stand Skeet Shoot has been scheduled for this weekend.

The event will be held from 7:30 am to 4 pm Saturday at Black River Ranch in Poplar Bluff. Concessions and a bake sale will also be available at the event.

Organizers say 100 percent of the proceeds will go to benefit Matt Deaton and his family. Deaton was diagnosed with kidney disease at the age of four. Due to the severity of his kidney disease, Deaton is not eligible for a transplant and has been on dialysis for a year.

To sign up for the shoot, contact Aaron Aden at 573-429-3195.
