POPLAR BLUFF CITY COUNCIL WILL CONSIDER ENTERING A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH ICE DURING MONDAY MEETING

The Poplar Bluff City Council will be voting on a proposed agreement concerning ICE during its regular meeting on Monday.

The official agenda for the Monday regular meeting says that the council will consider entering into a Memorandum of Understanding with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement relative to the 287(g) Program.

According to the ICE website, the program allows ICE enforcement and Removal Operations to partner with state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies to identify and remove criminal aliens who are amenable to removal from the United States.

Poplar Bluff Police Chief JR Keirsey says that being a part of the ICE program is a prerequisite for the Bridging Immigration-Related Deficits Experienced Nationwide grant program.

Keirsey says that the Department is applying for grants through the program to replace the department’s tasers, to acquire two drones, and join Axon Era, which would allow their newest body-worn cameras the ability to translate languages while on scene with a citizen, and a report writing program.

The City Council is also scheduled to take a vote on an ordinance that will allow the city to enter the Program.

The Council will also vote on an ordinance that will submit a ballot proposition to voters in November to consider imposing a city-wide sales tax of one-half of one percent on all retail sales to provide revenue for the operation of the Poplar Bluff Fire Department.

The meeting will begin at 7 pm at the City Council chambers on South 5th Street. Prior to the meeting, a public hearing will begin at 6:45 for council members to receive citizens' input regarding property tax rates.
