HIGH HEAT INDEX EXPECTED TODAY FOLLOWED BY CHANCES OF STORMS TONIGHT

Another day of high heat in Southeast Missouri will be followed by chances of storms tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, heat index values are expected to reach around 100 degrees today in the Poplar Bluff area.

Tonight a cold front will sweep across the region, which may bring a slight chance of severe storms. There is a higher risk of severe weather for our northern and western counties.

MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING PURSUIT IN BUTLER COUNTY

Authorities in Butler County made an arrest following a pursuit Wednesday morning.

According to Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs, shortly before 6 am on Wednesday, deputies located a suspect vehicle that had been involved with multiple thefts at a business on Highway 53.

Deputies made contact with a suspect, identified as Christopher Feller. Feller allegedly refused to exit the vehicle and began fleeing.

A pursuit ensued that reached excessive speeds before the vehicle was disabled using spike strips in the Neelyville area.

Both Feller and a passenger, whose name was not released, were apprehended a short time later on US Highway 67 near County Road 350.

They were both lodged at the Butler County Justice Center on a warrant issued for felony resisting arrest and two counts of misdemeanor stealing.

POWER TO BE SHUT OFF FOR AROUND 90 MINUTES THURSDAY MORNING FOR SOME OZARK BORDER CUSTOMERS

Some Ozark Border customers will be without power for part of this morning.

According to David Schremp, General Manager of Ozark Border Electric Cooperative, crews have been working to upgrade the voltage on a portion of their system on Highway 67, north of Poplar Bluff. The improvement is part of a plan intended to increase reliability for a much larger part of Butler County.

The final portion of the conversion will take place today and require a planned outage for 279 accounts.

Schremp says that the outage will begin at 9 am and is expected to last approximately 90 minutes.

He apologized for the inconvenience and appreciates residents' patience as crews work to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

DEXTER MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE CHARGES INCLUDING SEXUAL MISCONDUCT INVOLVING A CHILD

Continuing to follow a story for you out of Stoddard County, the investigation into an alleged case of child abuse and neglect has resulted in an additional arrest.

Dexter Police Chief Hank Trout tells KWOC News that 27 year old Ronald Nehrkorn Jr., of Dexter was arrested Tuesday on charges of sexual misconduct involving a child under 15, furnishing or attempting to furnish pornographic material to a minor, and three counts of possession of child pornography.

Nehrkorn is being held in the Stoddard County Jail on no bond.

Trout says that the child abuse and neglect investigation remains active, and additional charges may be filed.

HOLCOMB AWARDED $30,000 TO EVALUATE DRINKING WATER SYSTEM

A southeast Missouri community has been awarded grant money to evaluate its drinking water system.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded a $30,000 Drinking Water Engineering Report grant to Holcomb.

City officials will use the grant to identify improvements that will enable them to continue operating drinking water systems that meet water quality standards and provide reliable service.

PUBLIC HEARING SET FOR THIS WEEK IN CARTER COUNTY TO DISCUSS GRANT PROPOSAL

A public hearing has been scheduled for this week concerning a grant proposal for the Fremont area.

Carter County will hold a public hearing at 8:45 am on Friday at the Carter County Courthouse to discuss the submission of an application for the Community Development Block Grant program.

The proposed project consists of constructing a new community center in the Fremont area that will also house the Fremont VFD. The project estimate eligible for CDBG funding will be equal to or less than the cap allowable amount of $500,000.
