BOLLINGER COUNTY SHERIFF ANNOUNCES CLOSURE OF COUNTY JAIL, INMATES MOVED TO WAYNE COUNTY

A local county jail has been closed.

Bollinger County Sheriff Stanley Petton has announced that he made the decision to close the Bollinger County Jail as of Tuesday.

Sheriff Petton says that due to aging utilities, an outdated construction plan, and the growing inmate population, the jail is no longer fit or secure enough to house the number of inmates for the duration of time they are now awaiting court proceedings.

The inmates are now being housed at the Wayne County Jail in Greenville.

Petton says that this will cost the county $35 per inmate, per day.

Petton added that he and county commissioners have had discussions about the building of a new jail and they are currently exploring every opportunity available to replace the facility, including state and federal grants.

Anyone with questions is asked to call the Bollinger County Sheriff’s Office at 573-238-2633.
