MDC ASKING FOR PUBLIC COMMENTS ON CHANGES TO SPRING TURKEY HUNTING

The Missouri Department of Conservation is seeking feedback from the public on a potential regulation change to nonresident spring turkey hunting.

According to officials, the proposed regulation change would reduce the nonresident bag limit from two bearded birds in the spring to a single bearded bird in the spring. Nonresident landowners would maintain a two bearded bird bag limit, provided only one be harvested during the first seven days of the season.

The MDC says that nonresident participation in Missouri’s spring turkey season has increased in recent years and some resident hunters have expressed concern about how it is impacting their hunts.

Reducing the nonresident spring bag limit should reduce the overall number of nonresident trips statewide, thereby alleviating some of the crowding or pressure that resident hunters encounter.

Public comments on the proposed change are being accepted at mdc.mo.gov.

TODAY IS BUCKLE UP, PHONE DOWN DAY IN MISSOURI

Missourians are being inspired to drive safely today for the ninth annual Buckle Up, Phone Down day challenge.

Officials are encouraging motorists across the state to take two simple actions to save lives on the state’s highways – fasten their seat belts and put their phones down while driving.

To date in 2025, more than 700 people have died on Missouri roadways. Of the vehicle occupants killed, more than half were unbuckled. Distracted driving is also a leading cause of crashes in Missouri. In 2024, distracted driving was cited in crashes that claimed 106 lives, though that number is likely higher due to underreporting.

Despite notable progress in recent years, Missouri’s downward trend in roadway fatalities is now at risk. In 2024, the state saw its second consecutive year of decline, with a total of 955 traffic-related deaths. However, 344 of those fatalities occurred between September 1st and December 31st.

If current patterns continue through the 2025 holiday travel season, Missouri could surpass last year’s fatality numbers, ending a streak of progress in roadway safety.
