UNITED GOSPEL RESCUE MISSION TO HOST ANNUAL THANKSGIVING DINNER
The United Gospel Rescue Mission is providing their annual Thanksgiving Meal on November 27th.
The meal will be held at around noon on Thanksgiving at the Rescue Mission in Poplar Bluff. If you can’t make it to the rescue mission you can also call ahead and have a meal delivered to you.
The Rescue Mission is in need of volunteers to help prepare meals leading up to the event. On Thanksgiving, the rescue mission will also need assistance to prepare, serve, and deliver the meals. They are also accepting donations of desserts to be used in the meals.
Pastor Kirk is expecting to feed many more people this year compared to the over 2,000 meals served last year.
If you would like more information, want to volunteer, want to schedule a delivery, or want to donate food such as a dessert, call 573-785-4683.
POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS RANKED IN TOP FIVE OF STATEWIDE MATH COMPETITION
Students at a Poplar Bluff school are currently ranked in the top five of schools across the state in an online math competition.
School officials say that Trish Carpenter, the computer lab instructor at O'Neal Elementary, has been utilizing an online game to reinforce math concepts.
Prodigy Math is an interactive game on the web that allows students to compete against other schools across Missouri in the state challenge. Upon logging in, students create a wizard character and battle their classmates by answering math questions while entering different worlds, rescuing animals and gaining wardrobe accessories.
The students are currently ranked fourth statewide with over 14,000 math problems answered correctly, and poised to qualify for the Prodigy National Cup in May earning a chance to win a share of over $200,000 in technology grants.
To qualify the school needs to maintain its position within the top five for the month.
For the month of September, O’Neal placed 11th in the state, and Principal Shelly Ridens surprised the top classes with an ice cream party. Ridens says that the best part of the movement is that “kids want to do math problems!”
