SEMIFINAL SET FOR 31st ANNUAL POPLAR BLUFF BASKETBALL SHOWDOWN

The semifinal matchups have been set for the 31st Annual Poplar Bluff Basketball Showdown.

The Poplar Bluff Mules advanced to today’s semifinal with a 66-61 victory over Fayetteville.

The Mules will take on Cordova High School tonight at 7 pm. Cordova defeated Bradley Tech 90-51 on Wednesday.

The other semifinal will be a Missouri-Arkansas matchup as Jonesboro takes on Christian Brothers High School at 8:30 pm.

The two consolation matchups today will be Christian County vs. Humboldt at 4 pm and Fayetteville vs. Bradley Tech at 5:30 pm.

Today is also the day for the Slam Dunk and 3-point contest, which will begin at 10 am.

UPCOMING WEEK EXPECTED TO BE COLDEST SINCE EARLY 2015

Winter has fully arrived in Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, the upcoming week will be the coldest week of weather the region has seen since February of 2015.

Officials say that you should check on your vulnerable friends and family as well as bring your pets in out of the cold.

FOUR PEOPLE WERE INJURED, INCLUDING TWO PEDESTRIANS, DURING INCIDENT IN IRON COUNTY

Two pedestrians were among four people who were injured during an incident Wednesday evening in Iron County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a vehicle struck a stationary vehicle on Route U at around 5:30 pm Wednesday.

The stationary vehicle then struck two pedestrians. The two pedestrians along with two people in the first vehicle suffered minor injuries during the incident.

HIGHWAY PATROL URGES MOTORISTS TO BE PREPARED FOR DRIVING IN COLD WEATHER

With temperatures starting to get down in the single digits, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is urging motorists to be prepared for driving in cold weather.

Before you start driving, check your tire pressure as well as vehicle fluids, and try to keep your gas tank at least half full.

Make sure you have an emergency kit with a blanket, jumper cables, flash light, and ice scraper along with other emergency items.

When warming up your vehicle, never start it in an enclosed area, such as a garage. Also, always clear your windows, lights, and mirrors of snow and ice.

If you face a traffic emergency, you can contact the Missouri State Highway Patrol at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone.

Motorists should use this number if they are in a traffic crash, witness a crash or crime, or observe a stranded motorist in need of assistance, or for other traffic emergencies.

TEXAS MAN ARRESTED ON FELONY CHARGE IN WAYNE COUNTY

A Texas man has been taken into custody in Southeast Missouri on a felony controlled substance charge.

According to the Highway Patrol arrest report, 29 year old Darion Brown, of Cypress, Texas, was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Wayne County on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – oxycodone.

Brown is also reportedly facing a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

WAPPAPELLO EAGLES HOSTING FISH FRY NEXT WEEK

The Wappapello Eagle’s will be hosting two fish fry’s in January.

The public is welcome to attend the fish fries, which have been scheduled for 4 to 7 pm on the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month.

The Eagle’s is located at 9103 on Highway T in Wappapello.
