WARRANT ISSUED FOR MAN IN CONNECTION TO A HIT AND RUN IN MALDEN

A warrant has been issued for a subject in connection to an alleged hit and run over the weekend.

Malden Director of Public Safety Jeff Mitchell tells KWOC News that at approximately 1:30 am on Sunday, dispatch received a call in reference to a leaving the scene accident in the 900 block of North Kimball Street.

The caller said that a female was hit by a car. At the scene, officers found the female to have extensive injuries and she was transported to an area hospital. At last update, the victim was listed as stable.

The car involved was found near the scene.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified as Naaman Caldwell and a warrant has been issued for his arrest on a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident and misdemeanor charges of operating a vehicle without a valid license and operating a motor vehicle owned by another while knowing the owner has not maintained financial responsibility.

The warrant includes a $75,000 cash only bond.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN SENTENCED TO OVER EIGHT YEARS IN PRISON FOR SELLING METHAMPHETAMINE

A Poplar Bluff man will be spending over eight years in prison for selling methamphetamine.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 33 year old Rashad Marshall pleaded guilty in July to one count each of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and distribution of methamphetamine.

Officials say that Marshall admitted to conspiring with Joshua E. Forbes and two others to sell methamphetamine. A member of the Southeast Missouri Drug Task Force purchased meth from the conspirators on six occasions between June and August of 2023.

On Monday, Marshall was sentenced to 100 months in prison.

OVER FIVE THOUSAND DEER HARVESTED DURING FIREARMS EARLY ANTLERLESS PORTION OF DEER SEASON

Hunters across Missouri took to the woods this past weekend for the state’s firearms early antlerless portion of deer season.

According to preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation, hunters harvested 5,741 deer during the weekend.

This is a massive decrease from last year’s total of 16,553. State officials attribute the decreased harvest to the stark contrast in weather conditions between the two years.

Bollinger County had the third highest harvest numbers in the state, with a total of 135 deer taken, while Ripley County was fifth with 127 deer taken.

The November firearms portion of deer season is set to begin on November 16th.

POPLAR BLUFF CITY COUNCIL ACCEPTS GRANT TO REMOVE GAS CHAMBER FOR ANIMAL EUTHANASIA

The Poplar Bluff City Council has accepted a grant to remove a gas chamber that is used for emergency animal euthanasia.

During the City Council’s regular meeting last week, the council approved a $15,000 grant agreement with the Humane Society of the United States.

The grant will be used to eliminate the chamber and to cover costs for not using it.

City planner James Sisk said during the meeting that the chamber was the last remaining one in Missouri used for that purpose and for the most part, it was only being used in emergency situations.

TWO DAY CULVERT REPLACEMENT TO BEGIN TODAY NEAR POPLAR BLUFF

Route M in Butler County will be reduced for two days this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

The work zone is located near Poplar Bluff between County Road 464 and County Road 462.

Work will take place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., both today and tomorrow.

BRIDGE REPAIR PROJECT SET FOR THIS WEEK IN MALDEN

Route 25 in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge repairs.

The section of roadway is located between County Road 120 and Douglas Street in Malden.

Weather permitting, work will take place today and tomorrow from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

GROUNDBREAKING HELD FOR NEW BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF THE HEARTLAND FACILITY

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Monday for a new facility to help area teens prepare for their future careers.

The Boys and Girls Club of the Heartland Regional Workforce Development Teen Center is a 33,250 square foot facility that will allow easy access for students from more than 20 area high schools in Missouri and Northeast Arkansas participating in the organization’s Workforce Development Initiative.

The program allows for the development of critical employment skills and training and experiential learning, plus an opportunity to earn college credits.

The new facility on Oak Grove Road will contain a full-size gymnasium, recreation and office area, and classroom wing, along with multiple labs and workshops.

Completion is anticipated by October of next year.

INVESTIGATIONS UNDERWAY INTO FIRE AND BURGLARY AT POPLAR BLUFF RESIDENCE

Authorities are investigating a weekend fire in Poplar Bluff.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, on Saturday, officers and fire personnel responded to a residence on Vine Street for a structure fire.

After firefighters extinguished the fire, police officers found signs of forced entry and determined that a burglary had occurred prior to the fire.

Officials say that the matter was referred to the Fire Marshal's Office for an arson investigation, while the burglary investigation remains ongoing with Poplar Bluff Police Department.

RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY SCHEDULED FOR NEW BUTLER COUNTY EMS FACILITY

A ribbon cutting ceremony has been scheduled for a new facility that has been built for Butler County EMS in Poplar Bluff.

The ribbon cutting will be held on Thursday, October 17th at 9 am at the location of the new facility at 2500 Kanell Boulevard.

Multiple community agencies have been invited to be a part of the festivities.

FIRE CREWS RESPOND QUICKLY TO EXTINGUISH VEHICLE FIRE ON AREA TRAIN TRACKS

Fire crews had to respond quickly over the weekend for a report of a burning vehicle on train tracks in the Campbell area.

According to the Campbell Volunteer Fire Department, fire crews responded to a vehicle on fire just after midnight Saturday night.

Officials say that the crews were able to get the fire extinguished and the vehicle towed just as they started to see the lights from an oncoming train.

They were able to get in contact with the train operator to get the train stopped so someone could inspect the tracks for damage.

No information was released on if there were any injuries from the truck fire.

TWO SERIOUSLY INJURED IN WEEKEND MOTORCYCLE CRASH

Two people were seriously injured in a motorcycle crash over the weekend.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the crash occurred shortly before 8 pm Saturday night on Highway 21 in Carter County when a vehicle pulled out of a parking lot and into the path of a motorcycle.

Two people riding the motorcycle, 26 year old Jaret Trube, of Doniphan, and 18 year old Lillie Cora, of Grandin, received serious injuries in the crash and were transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

THREE MONTH ROAD CLOSURE UNDERWAY ON ROUTE P IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route P in Stoddard County will be closed for three months so construction crews can perform bridge rehabilitation over Drainage Ditch 35.

The closure is located from Route Y to County Road 518.

The roadway will remain closed until the work is completed, which is anticipated to be on Monday, January 13.

MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO SHOOTING INCIDENT IN POPLAR BLUFF

A man is in custody in connection to a shooting over the weekend in Poplar Bluff.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, shortly before 6 am Saturday morning, officers responded to a residence on Victor Street in reference to a shooting.

At the home, the resident indicated that she had shot at a male subject as he entered her bedroom window.

24 year old Rondriguez Hopkins, of Poplar Bluff, was located approximately one block away and had a gunshot wound to his shoulder and hand. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Hopkins was later lodged at the Butler County Justice Center pending the filing of formal charges.

Poplar Bluff Police Chief Mike McClain tells KWOC News that at this time no charges are being sought against the resident of the home.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH NEAR POPLAR BLUFF

A single vehicle crash near Poplar Bluff resulted in the death of an area man.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 54 year old Perry Walk, of Doniphan, was driving on Highway M, five miles west of Poplar Bluff, when his vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned.

Officials say the crash occurred early Saturday morning.

Walk was pronounced dead at the scene by Butler County Coroner Jim Akers.

JUDGMENT ENTERED AGAINST STODDARD COUNTY SHERIFF FOR REFUSING TO RELEASE REQUESTED VIDEO

Stoddard County Sheriff Carl Hefner has been ordered to pay thousands of dollars in connection to his refusal to release body cam footage.

A judgment released on October 9th says that Hefner actively sought to hide the apparent disturbing actions of one of his Deputies in order to avoid an apparent public outcry, and systemically sought to thwart the efforts of the Plaintiff to obtain video of the incident, regardless of the reason it may have been sought.

The body cam footage was in relation to an incident in August 2023.

Hefner was ordered to pay a civil penalty of $500, deposition fees of $817.50, and attorney fees of $5,000.

2024 OFC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT BEGINS TODAY

The 2024 OFC Baseball Tournament, featuring eight area schools, begins today.

Twin Rivers captured the top seed for the tournament and will play number 8 seed Clearwater at 4 pm today in Broseley.

The other three first round matchups will be played at Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff today and will see Puxico taking on Neelyville at 11 am, Greenville challenging East Carter at 1 pm, and Doniphan facing Naylor at 3 pm.

MAN FACING MULTIPLE CHARGES FOR ALLEGEDLY CAUSING SERIOUS INJURIES TO A YOUNG CHILD

A man in Northeast Arkansas is facing multiple charges after a young child suffered serious injuries.

According to the Paragould Police Department, on September 9th, officers were dispatched to a residence in Paragould in reference to an unresponsive infant.

The child was transported to an area hospital where serious injuries were discovered by medical staff. Medical documentation indicated that the injuries were consistent with repeated incidents of abuse leading to the injuries.

During the investigation, detectives gathered incriminating evidence that the actions of 35 year old Joshua Collins were the reason for the sustained injuries.

Collins was taken into custody last week on felony charges of endangering the welfare of a minor - 1st degree and domestic battering - 1st degree.

He was held in the Greene County Jail on a $25,000 bond.

ADVANCE MAN GRADUATES FROM HIGHWAY PATROL LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY

One new State Trooper has been assigned to Southeast Missouri.

Colonel Eric Olson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, tells KWOC News that a total of nine troopers graduated from the Patrol’s Accelerated Law Enforcement Academy on Friday, October 11th.

Gavin Krech, of Advance, was assigned to cover Butler and Ripley Counties.

Krech was also awarded the Firearms Trophy and Superintendent’s Award during the Graduation ceremony.

Trooper Krech will report to duty in Troop E on Monday, October 21st.

DRIVER EXAMINATION STATIONS TO BE CLOSED TODAY IN MISSOURI

Missouri state officials are reminding motorists that driver examinations will not be available today due to the holiday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, driver examination stations throughout the state will be closed today in observance of Columbus Day.

Officials say that normal operations will resume on Tuesday.

TYLER AND BEN HANSBROUGH HIGHLIGHT 36TH POPLAR BLUFF SPORTS HALL OF FAME CLASS

Two brothers highlighted the 2024 class of the Poplar Bluff Sports Hall of Fame.

Tyler and Ben Hansbrough along with the 2004 and 2005 PBHS Mules basketball teams were honored during a ceremony on Thursday. Their plaques are being added to the Hall of Fame room in the Poplar Bluff Museum on Main Street, bringing the total number of those honored to 100 individuals and 12 teams.

Tyler Hansbrough was an All-American basketball player in high school and college, holding numerous records and has his Number 50 jersey retired at both levels. He has also been inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame and the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.

Ben Hansbrough was an All-American and Big East Player of the Year at the University of Notre Dame and has his Number 23 jersey retired at Poplar Bluff.

During the brothers' three seasons together at Poplar Bluff, the Mules won 78 games, made three appearances in the MSHSAA final four, finishing fourth in 2003 before winning consecutive state championships in 2004 and 2005.

MISSOURI PERSONNEL NO LONGER NEEDED FOR HURRICANE RESPONSE EFFORTS

Missouri Governor Mike Parson says that state personnel are no longer needed to assist with hurricane response efforts.

Parson had previously announced that 100 Missouri National Guard members, 21 Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers and civilian support staff, and five Missouri Disaster Medical Assistance Team members would be mobilized in response to an Emergency Management Assistance Compact request from Florida.

In light of Hurricane Milton being less impactful than previously expected, the State of Florida has canceled the request that Missouri was responding to.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management said the willingness to help was appreciated but that the events over the last 24 hours were not as dire as had been expected and that the state believed it was able to meet its needs with resources already available within the state.

Parson added that the State of Missouri has no pending, direct EMAC requests for states affected by Hurricanes Helene or Milton but is prepared to consider any requests should they be received.

GREENVILLE JACK O’LANTERN JUBILEE STARTS THIS WEEKEND

The 2024 Greenville Jack O’Lantern Jubilee will begin this weekend.

According to the US Army Corps of Engineers, the free event will be held from 5 to 7 pm on October 12th, 19th, and 26th at the Greenville Campground.

POPLAR BLUFF MIDDLE SCHOOL TO HOST PARADE FOR VETERANS DAY

Poplar Bluff area veterans are being invited to participate in a parade for Veteran’s Day.

The Poplar Bluff Middle School is hosting a Veteran’s Day Parade on Monday, November 11th. Veterans who want to be involved will get to drive through a parade loop around the PBMS campus to be recognized and cheered on by students.

The Parade will begin at 9:15 am and the veterans should arrive at the parking lot of the Highland Drive Church of Christ at 8:30 am.

Only veterans, students, and school staff will be allowed on campus for the event.

MAN CHARGED WITH RAPE IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A man is in custody in Northeast Arkansas on three counts of rape.

According to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, 58 year old Kenneth Hause is being held in the Greene County Detention Center on three counts of rape and a single county of sexual assault 2nd degree.

A victim, under the age of 10, told police of multiple acts that would constitute rape or sexual assault.

The acts, allegedly performed by Hause, occurred at a residence in Greene County.

Hause was booked into the Greene County Detention Center on Tuesday and is being held on no bond.

MODOT CREWS TO BE TRAINING FOR WINTER WEATHER TODAY

Do not be surprised if you see an increased number of MoDOT vehicles on the roads today.

The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold its annual statewide winter operations drill beginning this morning.

During today’s drill, MoDOT employees will react to a simulated forecast of significant snow for the entire state. The department’s emergency operations centers will be activated and maintenance employees will be deployed to their trucks. Emergency communications systems will also be tested.

In rural areas, crews will deploy after 8 a.m. In urban areas, the drill will not begin until after 9 a.m.

The exercise should be completed by 3 p.m.

Officials say that with high turnover rates and many positions still open, driver training is more critical than ever.

MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION ANNOUNCES DROP OFF POINTS FOR CWD TESTING

The Missouri Department of Conservation is making multiple drop off sites available to make it easier for deer hunters to help monitor Chronic Wasting Disease.

In Southeast Missouri, hunters can drop off deer heads at York’s One Stop in Campbell along with the Bollinger County CO-OP in Marble Hill and the heads will later be picked up by MDC staff.

Officials say the goal is to provide hunters an additional way of submitting their harvested deer for voluntary CWD testing. These self-serve drop sites will enable hunters to submit deer heads for sampling at their convenience during the 2024-2025 fall deer hunting season.

Hunters will need to record their name and contact information, as well as their Telecheck ID numbers and the location the deer was harvested.

TODAY IS THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER TO VOTE IN MISSOURI FOR UPCOMING GENERAL ELECTION

The deadline is here to make sure you’re registered to vote in Missouri for the upcoming election.

According to the Missouri Secretary of State’s Office, the last day to register to vote in Missouri for the general election is today.

The general election is scheduled for Tuesday, November 5th.

FALL BUFF UP THE BLUFF COMING ON SATURDAY

The 2024 Fall Buff up the Bluff event is set for this weekend.

THIS WEEK IS NATIONAL FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

It's National Fire Prevention Week, and officials are urging residents to develop fire escape routes for their homes and practice at least twice a year.

State officials say that rehearsing an escape can save time and lives because flames and smoke spread quickly.

You should also take steps to keep fires from starting, such as never leaving the kitchen while cooking, replacing damaged electrical cords and blowing out candles when leaving a room.

The theme for this year’s fire prevention week is “Smoke Alarms: Make them work for you!”

Smoke alarms should be placed throughout a home, tested monthly and replaced every 10 years. You should also remember to change the alarm’s batteries once a year and a good time to remember to do that is when the time changes in the fall.

This week, the Poplar Bluff Fire Department will be visiting area schools and talking fire safety with students.

STATE OFFICIALS STRESS SAFETY FOR NON-HUNTERS DURING HUNTING SEASON

Deer and Turkey hunting is underway in Missouri and state officials are reminding non-hunters that they also need to practice safety measures when afield.

Officials say that non-hunters should wear bright clothing to be more visible, such as a bright orange hat, jacket, or pack.

Place a bright orange vest or bandana on canines who join you and remember to keep them leashed. Be aware that hunters are often most active during the early morning and late afternoon, when game animals are most active. Be especially aware of your own visibility during these times when light is dim.

Stay on designated trails. Trails are designed to improve the safety of public users and to protect sensitive habitats. Enjoying recreational activities only on designated trails will reduce the likelihood of entering hunting areas.

If you hear shooting, raise your voice, and let hunters know you are in the area.

This is also the time to be extra cautious and watching for deer while driving.

POPLAR BLUFF CHURCH TO HOST JOB FAIR THIS WEEKEND

A Poplar Bluff area church will be hosting a job fair this weekend.

The event has been scheduled for 10 am to noon on Saturday, October 12th at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Katy Lane.

The job fair will feature professional career path presentations, college guidance, employment opportunities, and more.

MISSOURI STATE HIGHWAY PATROL WARNS PUBLIC OF TELEPHONE SCAM

State officials are warning Missouri residents to be aware of a telephone scam.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, in the past month, some incidents have been reported where a suspect contacted an individual associated with someone who was involved in a motor vehicle crash, identified themselves as the investigating trooper and attempted to solicit money from the victim.

The suspect may intimidate the victim with false claims of impending or nonexistent court charges/proceedings.

Officials say that Patrol employees will not contact individuals and solicit funds or demand any form of payment.

HOUSE EXPLOSION IN BUTLER COUNTY CLASSIFIED AS ACCIDENTAL

The explosion that killed two people last week in rural Butler County is believed to have been accidental.

The explosion occurred shortly before 9 am on Friday at a home near Highway 53 and Butler County Road 605.

Coroner Jim Akers tells KWOC News that 77 year old Diana Baker and 67 year old Danny Batchelor, both of Poplar Bluff, were killed in the explosion.

According to the Missouri Department of Public Safety, a propane tank at the residence had been filled on Thursday and investigators determined there was a leak in a pipe that allowed gas to enter the basement.

Officials say that the explosion has been classified as accidental.

MAN APPEARS IN COURT ON SODOMY AND CHILD ABUSE CHARGES

A man appeared in a Butler County court Monday morning on a sodomy charge.

According to Missouri Case Net, a warrant was served last week on Dakota Christian Schrieber, of Poplar Bluff, on charges of sodomy or attempted sodomy - 1st degree and abuse or neglect of a child.

Schrieber is accused of having inappropriate contact with a child under the age of 12.

He is being held in the Butler County Justice Center on a no bond warrant ahead of his next court date on October 17th.

MULTIPLE PETS POISONED IN NEW MADRID, INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY

Authorities in New Madrid are investigating after several reports have come in of area pets being poisoned.

According to the New Madrid Police Department, the pets were poisoned in the area of Davis and Capital Streets over the last few weeks.

Officials say that it is believed that someone is attempting to poison skunks in the area and have killed several neighborhood pets in the process.

SEVEN ARRESTED ON DRUG CHARGES IN DONIPHAN

Seven people were arrested on drug charges Sunday in Doniphan.

According to the Doniphan Police Department, officers conducted a search warrant Sunday evening at a property on North Green Street.

Seven people, all of Doniphan, were arrested on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia in connection to the search, 52 year old Homer Lambert, 52 year old Stacey Wood, 50 year old Travis Luye, 45 year old Terry Whitnell, 43 year old Katherine Whitnell, 41 year old Melinda Vollet, and 38 year old Phillip Vialibaba.

Lambert has also been charged with felony unlawful use of a weapon.

All seven suspects were placed in the Ripley County Detention Center.

IDENTITIES RELEASED OF VICTIMS IN BUTLER COUNTY HOUSE EXPLOSION

Two people were killed in a large explosion in rural Butler County on Friday.

The explosion occurred shortly before 9 am at a home near Highway 53 and Butler County Road 605.

While working the scene, emergency crews found two people deceased among the debris.

Coroner Jim Akers tells KWOC News that the deceased have been identified as 77 year old Diana Baker and 67 year old Danny Batchelor, both of Poplar Bluff

The Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a possible cause for the explosion.

The Poplar Bluff Fire Department, Butler County Fire Department, Butler County Sheriff’s Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Butler County EMS, Butler County Coroner's Office, and Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office were all on scene.

SENATOR JOSH HAWLEY AND KANSAS CITY CHIEFS KICKER HARRISON BUTKER TO APPEAR AT RALLY THIS WEEK IN POPLAR BLUFF

A sitting United States Senator along with a member of the Kansas City Chiefs will be in Poplar Bluff this week.

A political rally will be held at 5 pm on Thursday and the speakers will include United States Senator Josh Hawley and Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker.

The location will be announced this week.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN IN CUSTODY AFTER ALLEGEDLY HOLDING ANOTHER PERSON AT GUNPOINT

An argument led to a weapons arrest last week in Poplar Bluff.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, on Wednesday, officers responded to a residence on Arkansas Avenue in reference to an individual brandishing a weapon.

Officials say that it was determined that an argument had occurred between several people at the residence, and that one person had obtained a firearm and held another person at gunpoint.

33 year old Brandon Random, of Poplar Bluff, was arrested for kidnapping 1st degree, unlawful use of a weapon, and armed criminal action.

Charges are being sought against Random through the Butler County Prosecutor’s Office as well as for a second subject in the incident for unlawful possession of a firearm.

MOTORISTS WARNED TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR DEER

With temperatures starting to drop, Missouri motorists are being advised to watch for deer.

Officials say that deer are more active and create hazards for Missouri motorists at this time of year.

The majority of deer strike crashes occur in October and November each year, with most happening in the 6 to 7 am and 6 to 9 pm timeframes.

Last year, drivers in Missouri experienced 3,591 traffic crashes where deer-vehicle strikes occurred. In these crashes, there were four fatalities and 420 people were injured.

Drivers are reminded that an attempt to avoid striking a deer could result in a more serious crash involving oncoming traffic. As soon as you see a deer, the best course of action is to reduce your speed gradually while watching other traffic around you.

If you do strike a deer, move your vehicle to a safe location and call 9-1-1 or *55 on a cell phone and report it.

ROAD CREWS TO BE WORKING THIS WEEK ON ROUTE P IN SENATH

Route P in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The work zone will be located from Route V to Route C in Senath.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Thursday.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

Route E in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs. 

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route A to County Road 632 near Big Ridge.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

COMMUNITY MEMBERS TEAM UP TO HELP PROTECT MULES FOOTBALL PLAYERS

Players for the Poplar Bluff Mules Football team now have additional ways to stay safe during practices and games thanks to the help of local community members.

According to Poplar Bluff School Officials, several local medical practitioners, lawyers, and realtors teamed up over the summer to supply 150 Guardian Caps, a value of more than $8,000, to be dispersed between Poplar Bluff High School and Junior High.

Guardian Caps add a padded, soft-shell layer to the exterior of football helmets with energy-absorbing properties designed to reduce the initial severity of impact to the head.

Mules High School Football Coach Jeff Mannon tells KWOC News that there have been zero concussions reported during practice so far this season. Mannon added “It lets you go at full-speed with reassurance that you won’t get a concussion on Tuesday at practice, and not be able to play during the game on Friday.

The usage of the caps is optional during NFL games this year and mandated by the league for certain positions during contact practice. MSHSAA does not endorse the add-on as of right now, but Coach Mannon says that he hopes standard helmet design will eventually advance to incorporate the safeguard.

The Mules will be back in action tonight as they travel to Sikeston to take on the Bulldogs.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION RELEASED IN CONNECTION TO WAYNE COUNTY FATAL SHOOTING

A suspect is facing multiple charges following a fatal shooting in Wayne County.

According to authorities, Eric “Quinn” Moore has been taken into custody after two people were shot during an incident on Wednesday in the Lowndes area.

One of the subjects has died while the other is in critical condition. Their identities have not been released.

Officials say that Moore is currently facing charges of armed criminal action, kidnapping, and two counts of first degree assault.

MAN SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS IN PRISON ON RAPE CHARGE IN STODDARD COUNTY

A man in Stoddard County has been sentenced to two decades in prison on a rape charge.

According to Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Sawyer Smith, defendant Patrick Varner was sentenced on Wednesday to 20 years imprisonment in the Missouri Department of Corrections for a charge of rape or attempted rape and seven years imprisonment each for charges of stautory rape and possession of child pornography.

The sentences will run concurrently.

Smith says that Varner will also be required to register as a tier 3 sex offender for the remainder of his life.

NORTHSIDE NUTRITION CENTER TO HOST CELEBRATION OF 50 YEARS OF PROVIDING MEALS

Northside Nutrition Center in Poplar Bluff will be hosting a celebration today.

The event has been scheduled for 10:30 am to 12:30 pm today to celebrate 50 years of serving senior citizens and veterans meals.

SEARCH UNDERWAY FOR SUBJECT IN CONNECTION TO  WAYNE COUNTY SHOOTING

A search is underway for a subject in connection to an assault in Wayne County.

Sheriff Dean Finch tells KWOC News that on Wednesday afternoon, at around 1 pm, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office received a call of an assault involving firearms in the area of County Roads 524 and 509 near Lowndes. 

An investigation resulted in Eric “Quinn” Moore being identified as a person of interest. 

He is reported to be driving a 1999 white Ford dually that is equipped with stainless steel exhaust stacks.

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of the vehicle or Moore, is asked to contact the Wayne County Sheriff's Office at 573-224-3219 or call 911.

WOMAN KILLED IN POPLAR BLUFF AREA CRASH WAS ALLEGEDLY DRIVING A STOLEN VEHICLE

A woman who was killed in a two vehicle crash Tuesday night in the Poplar Bluff area was allegedly driving a stolen vehicle.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, at approximately 9:15 pm on Tuesday, dispatch received a call from an individual who had recently reported that their vehicle was stolen.

Officers were dispatched to the area where the vehicle was last seen and met the vehicle on Highway 53 as it was going in the opposite direction at a high rate of speed with its headlights off.

Officers turned around and discovered that the vehicle was involved in an accident at the intersection of Highways 53 and 142.

The driver of the stolen vehicle, 38 year old Shanea Brown, of Poplar Bluff, was pronounced dead at an area hospital. The driver of the other vehicle suffered moderate injuries.

NEW ORGANIZATION SOUGHT TO KEEP OLD GREENVILLE BLACK POWDER RENDEZVOUS GOING

Officials with the US Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake say that help is needed to keep the Old Greenville Black Powder Rendezvous going next year.

The corps is looking for a new not for profit group or organization to run the event, which is the longest consecutive Rendezvous in the state of Missouri. The previous organizers were unable to continue running the event next year.

The event occurs on the 3rd weekend in April unless that weekend falls on Easter Sunday, in which case it will be held on the 4th weekend in April.

OVER 26 MILLION DOLLAR CONTRACT AWARDED TO CONSTRUCT OUTER ROADS AND LANES FOR ROUTE 67 IN BUTLER COUNTY

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission has awarded contracts for various road projects in Southeast Missouri.

According to officials, an over 26 million dollar contract was awarded to H.R. Quadri Contractors, LLC, for the addition of outer roads and lanes to upgrade Route 67 to freeway standards in Butler County.

The new roads will be located from County Road 338 south to County Road 352 and from County Road 360 to County Road 338.

An over 840 thousand dollar contract was also awarded to Joe’s Bridge and Grading for a bridge replacement on Route B over Drainage Ditch 1 in Butler County.

Additional information about the projects, including a timeline and what impacts there will be to traffic, will be released prior to the start of construction.

TWO POPLAR BLUFF RESIDENTS ARRESTED FOR ABUSE OR NEGLECT OF A CHILD

Two Poplar Bluff residents have been taken into custody after a juvenile was found unattended at an area business multiple times.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, on Tuesday officers responded to a business on pine street in reference to an unattended juvenile.

Officials say that a juvenile, who is of an age that requires constant adult supervision, had arrived at the store unattended, then exited the store, and was later picked up by an adult who walked the juvenile to a nearby residence.

Officers made contact with the juvenile and their parents which revealed that the juvenile had wandered off during outdoor activities with their parents and there was a history of similar incidents.

Officers later responded back to the same business for the same juvenile who had returned to the business unattended again. It was determined that the juvenile had left the residence without the parents being aware.

Officials say that 35 year old Jesse Schaeding and 33 year old Jamie Hardesty were arrested for abuse or neglect of a child.

The juveniles in the residence were left in the care of a family member.

TWO INJURED IN WAYNE COUNTY SHOOTING, SUSPECT IN CUSTODY

A suspect is in custody following a shooting Tuesday evening in Wayne County.

Wayne County Sheriff Dean Finch tells KWOC News that officers were called to the scene of a shooting at approximately 5:45 pm.

Two people were injured as a result of the shooting and one suspect has been taken into custody.

The names of the victims and suspect have not been released.

INVESTIGATION LEADS TO ARREST OF DONIPHAN WOMAN

A warrant was served earlier this week on a Doniphan woman in connection to a burglary investigation.

According to a probable cause affidavit, on September 24th, an officer with the Doniphan Police Department made contact with a subject, who advised that a white female had entered their home with a shotgun.

The officer was able to obtain video from a home security system of the incident. The officer later identified the woman as 38 year old Sara McFall and made contact with her.

When speaking with McFall, the officer said she appeared to be under the influence of narcotics.

A warrant was served for McFall on Monday, charging her with burglary 1st degree, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

She was booked into the Ripley County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond.

MEETINGS TO BE HELD THIS MONTH TO DISCUSS DONIPHAN COMPREHENSIVE PLAN

A series of meetings will be held this month to discuss the city of Doniphan’s Comprehensive Plan.

The meetings have been scheduled for 6 pm on October 3rd and October 8th, as well as noon on October 9th at Doniphan City Hall. The meetings will be open to the public.

Doniphan city officials have sent out a survey to area residents to get feedback on city related topics. The upcoming meetings will each last approximately an hour and feature information about the current state of the community and results from the survey.

ALABAMA WOMAN KILLED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

An Alabama woman has died from injuries she received Monday in a single vehicle crash in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Arkansas State Police, 65 year old Cynthia Hood, of Addison, Alabama, was driving on US Highway 67 in Walnut Ridge, when her vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway into a ditch, and then struck a telephone pole.

Officials say that Hood was the only person involved in the crash, which occurred at around 11:30 am Monday.

DUNKLIN COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED THROUGH MID DECEMBER FOR BRIDGE REPLACEMENT

Route J in Dunklin County will be closed through the middle of December so contractor crews can replace a bridge.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the bridge is located between County Roads 215 and 219 near Malden.

Weather permitting, completion is anticipated by Sunday, December 15. The road will remain closed as work is underway, and motorists should seek alternate routes.

SUSPECT IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO NON FATAL SHOOTING IN POPLAR BLUFF

A suspect is in custody in connection to a non-fatal shooting in Poplar Bluff.

According to Poplar Bluff Chief of Police Mike McClain, shortly after 4 am on September 28th, officers responded to a location on South Broadway for a shooting.

At the scene, officers located a male subject who had suffered a gunshot wound to the back. The victim was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital and then moved to a Cape Girardeau hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

26 year old Kevin Spratt, of Poplar Bluff, was taken into custody early Monday morning as a part of the investigation after being found hiding in the trunk of a car.

Spratt was lodged at the Butler County Justice Center pending the filing of charges for assault 1st degree, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon.

SHOTS FIRED DURING POSSIBLE BURGLARY ATTEMPT IN POPLAR BLUFF

Poplar Bluff Police are investigating a report of shots being fired on Friday.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, officers responded to a residence on Spring Street in reference to shots being fired and a possible burglary in progress.

Officers determined that two subjects had broken a window at a nearby residence and shots were subsequently fired. It was not released who was believed to have fired the shots.

Officials say that a suspect has been identified and the investigation is ongoing.

PUXICO MAN IN CUSTODY ON DRUG TRAFFICKING CHARGE

Two Puxico men were taken into custody over the weekend on drug related charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 35 year old Steven Hilton and 31 year old Seth Hilton were both arrested Saturday on charges of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Steven Hilton is also facing a felony charge of drug trafficking 1st degree for fentanyl.

Following their arrests, both men were held at the Cape Girardeau County Jail.

MAN SENTENCED TO OVER 9 YEARS IN PRISON ON FIREARM CHARGE

A Southeast Missouri man will be spending over nine years in prison after pleading guilty to a firearm charge.

Last week, a U.S. District Judge sentenced 39 year old Joshua Morris, to 110 months in prison for a one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

In June of 2023, the Kennett Police Department received a report that Morris pistol-whipped someone at an area store. Officers found Morris and discovered a vacuum sealed bag of marijuana, 23 grams of meth, a digital scale, and a semi-automatic pistol under the hood of his car.

Morris has prior felony convictions and is thus barred from possessing a firearm.

He pled guilty to the charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm in June.

WOMAN FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A CRASH NEAR NAYLOR

One person was seriously injured in a crash Monday afternoon near Naylor.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 79 year old Norma Horrocks, of Naylor, was driving on Missouri Highway 142 when her vehicle failed to negotiate a curve, ran off the roadway, and overturned.

Horrocks received serious injuries in the crash and was flown to a Memphis hospital.

GREENVILLE AREA ROAD TO BE CLOSED FOR TWO DAYS THIS WEEK

Route A in Wayne County will be closed over two days as crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation perform core drilling operations. 

The closure will be located near Greenville on Route A between Route 67 and County Road 371.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily both today and tomorrow.

EMERGENCY GRANT AWARDED TO SOUTHEAST MISSOURI COMMUNITY FACING CATASTROPHIC WASTEWATER ISSUES

An emergency grant has been awarded to a Southeast Missouri community in response to what was described as catastrophic wastewater issues.

USDA Rural Development Missouri State Director Kyle Wilkens tells KWOC News that an emergency grant in the amount of $1 million through the Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program will go to Dunklin County RCSD #1.

Recently, the district has faced critical breakdowns of wastewater collection and pumping systems – affecting service for many rural residents in their district.

The funds will go to bring systems back to good working order – and to provide for other improvements including purchasing new vacuum pumps, discharge pumps, valves, and controllers.

The project will serve more than 300 customers in the Dunklin County RCSD #1 service area.

QULIN HOMECOMING SET FOR OCTOBER 5TH

The beginning of October will mark the return of the Qulin Homecoming.

Organizers say that the opening ceremony will begin at 10:30 am on Saturday, October 5th and will be immediately followed by the parade, which will start on 5th Street.

There will also be events and vendors available after the parade including the rock, paper, scissors tournament, the pumpkin decorating contest, and the Bake and Cake wars.

DEXTER CEMETERY ANNUAL FALL FLOWER REMOVAL SET FOR OCTOBER 1ST

Dexter residents are being reminded to remove flowers from the Dexter Cemetery by the end of the month.

City officials say that in preparation for fall, the Dexter Street Department will begin their annual Fall Flower Removal at the cemetery beginning on October 1st.

Anyone who does not want their flowers to be discarded should have them removed by that date.

ROAD WORK TO BEGIN TODAY ON US ROUTE 67 IN BUTLER COUNTY

Northbound Route 67 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane with an 10-foot width restriction this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route 160 to County Road 323.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday. There will be 24-hour lane closures at various locations throughout the work zone.

MONTH LONG BRIDGE MAINTENANCE PROJECT BEGINS TODAY IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

Route J in Pemiscot County will be closed for a month as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.

The section of roadway being closed is located from County Road 405 to County Road 407 near Shade.

LINEUP ANNOUNCED FOR 2024 POPLAR BLUFF SHOWDOWN

The eight teams who will be playing in the 2024 Poplar Bluff Showdown have been announced.

Poplar Bluff Athletics Director Kent Keith tells KWOC News that the field will include teams from five different states.

Poplar Bluff will be joined by Staley and Vashon from Missouri, Izard County and Maumelle from Arkansas, McCracken County from Kentucky, Urbana from Illinois, and Trinity Christian from Tennessee.

The three day Tournament will begin on Thursday, December 26th.

VETERANS DEPART THIS MORNING FOR 14TH ANNUAL HONOR TOUR

30 area veterans and 20 guardians will depart from Poplar Bluff this morning en route to Washington D.C.

The 14th Annual Veterans Honor Tour will give local veterans the opportunity to see national monuments and museums in Washington D.C., at no cost to the veterans.

The veterans will be leaving at 7:30 this morning from First Baptist Church for the three day tour. Area first responders will be escorting the veterans out of town on their way to St. Louis for their flight.

MAN DIES AFTER DOG ATTACK IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

An elderly man has died following a dog attack in Dunklin County.

According to Dunklin County Sheriff Bob Holder, shortly after 3:30 pm on Wednesday, deputies were dispatched to a location in Cardwell for a 72 year male that had fallen to the ground and been attacked by a dog.

First responders informed deputies that they were on scene but were unable to get access to the victim due to the presence of multiple aggressive dogs.

When deputies arrived they began to approach the victim and a dog suddenly charged them. In response, an officer fired his weapon, killing the dog.

The victim’s wife said she had tried to assist her husband, identified as Jimmy Miller, in getting up, but was unable to do so herself. She said that was when one of their dogs came over to her husband and began attacking him while he was on the ground.

Miller sustained multiple injuries consistent with a dog attack, including severe lacerations to his arms, face, and throat along with a significant amount of blood loss.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.

DEXTER MAN ARRESTED ON RAPE WARRANT

A Dexter man is in custody on a rape warrant in Stoddard County.

According to Missouri Case Net, 42 year old Michael Harris has been charged with rape 2nd degree and person with serious infectious or communicable disease knowingly exposing another person to the disease.

Harris is alleged to have had sex with a woman against her consent while knowing he had tested positive for HIV.

Harris is being held on no bond.

FALL BUFF UP THE BLUFF COMING ON OCTOBER 12TH

The 2024 Fall Buff up the Bluff event is set for next month.

The citywide clean up event has been scheduled for Saturday, October 12th.

Henson’s Transfer Station on the Industrial Park Bypass will be accepting items from 8 am to 3 pm. Proof of Poplar Bluff residency will be required.

Items being accepted include bulky items such as scrap metal, furniture, construction materials and tires.

Drivers must be prepared to unload their own vehicle.

HUNTER EDUCATION CLASS TO BE HELD IN DONIPHAN

A hunter education class will be held this weekend in Doniphan.

The Hunter Education Skills Session has been scheduled for Saturday, September 28th at the Old Current River Career Center Auditorium. The event will be from 8 am to noon.

Students must be 11 years of age or older to attend and have completed the Knowledge Portion of the Hunter Education course before attending.

BONESTOCK RETURNS THIS WEEKEND IN POPLAR BLUFF

A beloved music festival returns this weekend in Poplar Bluff.

The gates will open for Bonestock at 11 am this Saturday at Ray Clinton Park.

Six bands will be performing throughout the day, including Powder Mill, Roses Undead, and Fallen Within. This is the first Bonestock to be held since Bonestock 10 in 2014.

Tickets are available for $20 at River Radio in Poplar Bluff and on Eventbrite. Tickets will be available for $25 at the gate on Saturday.

Part of the proceeds from Bonestock will go to Roberts Adventure Playground, an all inclusive playground being built at McLane Park.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING CRASH IN POPLAR BLUFF

A crash Wednesday morning in Poplar Bluff resulted in the death of an area woman.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 40 year old Crystal Rulo, of Poplar Bluff was riding a motorized bicycle that ran into the side of a vehicle at the intersection of Business Highway 67 and Route 53.

Rulo, who was not wearing a safety device, was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital where she was pronounced dead.

SEARCH WARRANT LEADS TO ARREST OF THREE IN CLAY COUNTY

Three people have been taken into custody in Northeast Arkansas in connection to a search warrant.

According to Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole, on Monday officials conducted a search at an apartment west of Corning while attempting to locate 37 year old Travis Burkheart, of Biggers, who had several warrants for his arrest.

At the apartment, deputies noticed drug paraphernalia and observed a male subject discard a back box out the back door. Deputies were advised by residents of the apartment that Burkheart had just left and went into the woods in front of the apartment.

Two deputies went into the woods and found Burkheart, who had a knife in one hand and brass knuckles on the other. Burkheart was told by the deputies to put the weapons down, but refused. A deputy then deployed his Taser and Burkheart was taken into custody.

Deputies then obtained another search warrant for the apartment which resulted in 34 year old Bruce Caldwell and 34 year old Sarah Caldwell being taken into custody as well.

BUTLER COUNTY FAIR BEGINS TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

The Butler County Fair is kicking off today in Poplar Bluff.

The three day fair is set for today through Saturday at the Black River Coliseum.

Multiple events are scheduled for the fair this year, including the Beauty Pageant.

WORK UNDERWAY ON NEW POPLAR BLUFF TRAIL THAT WILL RUN PARALLEL TO PP HIGHWAY

Work is underway on a new trail in Poplar Bluff that will bridge Poplar Bluff’s trail system with the Wolf Creek Trail.

According to the Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce, the Wolf Creek Connector Trail project will run parallel to PP Highway.

Starting from the Dollar General near the roundabout, the trail will extend along the north side of PP Highway all the way to County Road 447.

US 60/62 BRIDGE OVER MISSISSIPPI RIVER REOPENS TO TRAFFIC

An extensively used bridge connecting Missouri to Southern Illinois and Kentucky reopened to traffic Wednesday.

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that the bridge carrying U.S. 60/62 over the Mississippi River in Alexander County, Illinois and Mississippi County, Missouri, will be available for motorists beginning at noon yesterday.

Originally anticipated to be completed on October 1st, officials say the work was finished a week ahead of schedule thanks to favorable weather and repairs going as planned.

The $5.86 million project, which consists of structural steel repairs, began in October 2023.

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE AWARDED ONE MILLION DOLLAR GRANT FOR WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

Three Rivers College has been chosen to receive a one million dollar grant to support building trades workforce development.

The grant, from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration, was announced Tuesday by Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo.

The grant will provide equipment for the new Bootheel Technical Training Center to support hands-on workforce training in electrical, HVAC, manufacturing, and welding trades. This EDA investment will be matched with $250,000 in local funds.

Officials say the project will provide equipment to train students in critical building trades, producing a highly skilled workforce, and diversifying the regional economy.

TWO FACING MURDER CHARGE IN CONNECTION TO DEATH OF AN INFANT IN MOREHOUSE

Updating a story we have been following for you, two people are now facing a murder charge in connection to the death of an infant in New Madrid County.

According to Sheriff Ronnie Adams, deputies were dispatched to a residence in Morehouse last month for a report of a three month old child not breathing.

Deputies and EMS responded to the scene and found the infant deceased.

The parents of the child, Jazzmine Oehlert and Zackery Murphy, were later taken into custody on charges including endangering the welfare of a child and manufacturing a controlled substance.

On Tuesday, an amended complaint was filed against both subjects charging them with 2nd degree murder.

The complaint says the child was killed by methamphetamine intoxication.

INVESTIGATION LEADS TO ARREST OF FORMER POLICE OFFICER ON CHILD PORNGRAPHY WARRANT

A former police officer in Northeast Arkansas has been taken into custody on a child pornography warrant.

According to the Pocahontas Police Department, a collaborative internal investigation was started in June with the Arkansas State Police and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force regarding a officer.

During the investigation, the officer, Arthur Cocherell, was terminated from his position with the Pocahontas Police Department.

A warrant was issued for Cocherell’s arrest last week for possession, distribution, and/or viewing child pornography.

Cocherell turned himself in to authorities on Monday and his bond was set at $25,000.

OFFICIALS WARN RESIDENTS TO AVOID CONTACT WITH AREA LAKE

Officials in Arkansas are advising people to avoid a Northeast Arkansas lake.

The Arkansas Division of Environmental Quality has issued a Harmful Algal Bloom Advisory for Heritage Park Lake in Clay County.

Officials say that Cyanobacteria have been visually confirmed and supported by preliminary testing. Harmful algal blooms may produce toxic substances which could result in headaches, weakness, shortness of breath, muscle spasms, and gastrointestinal illnesses.

Heritage Park Lake is located west of Piggott. The DEQ is monitoring the water quality and will lift the advisory when the bloom dissipates.

TWO ARRESTED ON METH CHARGES IN WAYNE COUNTY

Two people have been taken into custody in Wayne County on felony drug charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 31 year old Lynda Presley, of Poplar Bluff, and 42 year old Everett McCracken, of Ellsinore, were each arrested Monday afternoon on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine.

Following the arrests, each subject was held at the Wayne County Jail.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY ON INTERSTATE 55

Interstate 55 in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction today so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform bridge maintenance.

The section of roadway is located between mile markers 8.2 and 9.2.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through 4:30 p.m.

RICHLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ONE OF EIGHT IN MISSOURI NAMED AS NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOLS

An elementary school in Southeast Missouri was one of eight schools across the state to be named as a National Blue Ribbon School.

According to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Richland Elementary School was chosen for the program, which recognizes schools that perform at high academic levels or that perform at high levels while serving a significant proportion of disadvantaged students.

Richland previously received the National Blue Ribbon in 2018.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON RAPE CHARGE

A Poplar Bluff man has been taken into custody on a rape charge.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, 37 year old James Foreman Jr. was taken into custody Saturday on a charge of 2nd degree rape.

Few details about the arrest have been released, except for that Foreman was lodged into the Butler County Justice Center.

ABSENTEE VOTING OPENS FOR UPCOMING ELECTION

Election season is in full force now in Missouri.

Absentee voting begins today for the General Election, which is scheduled for Tuesday, November 5th.

An absentee ballot can be requested from your local election authority. There are a number of reasons someone can request an absentee ballot, including incapacity or confinement due to illness or physical disability or if you expect to be absent on Election Day.

No excuse absentee voting will begin on October 22nd.

There is still time to register to vote in the general election, which will feature the race for the White House, as well as local and statewide races, including several Missouri constitutional amendments. The final day to register to vote is October 9th.

Butler County Clerk Donna Hillis tells KWOC News that the Butler County Clerk’s office will be open today until 5 pm and through election day, they will be open through their lunch hour.

SENIOR HEALTH FAIR SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

A health fair for area residents ages 50 and up will be held today in Poplar Bluff.

The 27th Annual free Senior Health Fair from the Butler County Community Resource Council and AmeriCorps Seniors, has been scheduled for 10 am to 2 pm at the Twin Towers in Poplar Bluff.

MEETING MATERIALS FROM LAST WEEK’S MODOT HEARING NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE

Anyone who missed the public hearing earlier this month in Butler County to discuss upcoming road projects can now view the meeting materials online.

According to MoDOT, during the hearing, construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Routes C and V and Route 160 in were discussed. This intersection is located west of the Route 160/158 interchange south of Poplar Bluff. Those meeting materials are available online at Modot.org/cv160roundabout.

Today is the final day to submit comments about the project.

Officials also discussed phases 3 and 4 of the multi-phase project to upgrade U.S Route 67 in Butler County. Those meeting materials are available online at Modot.org/futureI57. Comments on that project will be accepted through October 1st.

The Butler County Fair is kicking off this week in Poplar Bluff.

The three day fair is set for Thursday through Saturday at the Black River Coliseum and Poplar Bluff Motorsports Park.

ONE INJURED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MOTORCYCLE CRASH

One person was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital Friday afternoon in connection to a motorcycle crash.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 20 year old Tatonka Ford, of Ellsinore, was riding a motorcycle when another vehicle merged onto the highway and forced Ford to run off the roadway.

The motorcycle then overturned.

Officials say that Ford received serious injuries in the crash, which occurred on US Highway 60 in Carter County.

87 YEAR OLD MAN DEAD FOLLOWING CRASH NEAR PATTON

A Marble Hill man has died from injuries he received in a crash Friday evening.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on Route OO, seven miles south of Patton, when a vehicle failed to yield and struck the back of an ATV.

The driver of the ATV, 87 year old Jacob Dunn, was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

MDC OFFERING REPORTS ON COLORS OF FALL FOLIAGE

Fall has started and the Missouri Department of Conservation is encouraging people to enjoy fall foliage through camping, driving tours, hiking, or even floating.

The autumn equinox began at 7:44 am on Sunday, ushering in the official beginning of the fall season.

To help Missourians get the best view of fall, the MDC is offering weekly online fall color updates from agency foresters all over the state at mdc.mo.gov/fallcolor.

The weekly reports include what kinds of trees are turning and suggestions on the best places to view them. The updates will run through November.

Route 114 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction today as construction crews perform bridge maintenance.

Route AB in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The work zone is located from Laclede Street to the end of state maintenance in the Malden area.

DISASTER RECOVERY CENTERS IN DONIPHAN AND SIKESTON TO CLOSE TODAY

The Joint Disaster Recovery Centers in Doniphan and Sikeston are set to close today.

According to FEMA officials, the centers will be open through 6 pm.

Homeowners, renters and self-employed business owners in 10 Missouri counties who were impacted by the May 19th through 27th severe storms, tornadoes and flooding can visit either of the centers in Southeast Missouri for one-on-one help, regardless of where they live. Services at the centers are free.

The 10 counties are: Butler, Carter, New Madrid, Ripley, Scott, Shannon, Stoddard, Barry, Howell, and Texas.

DRCs are a one-stop shop for disaster survivors who have applied with FEMA and need to present additional documentation or just have questions about the status of their cases.

The deadline is also approaching for people to register for disaster assistance through FEMA. That deadline is September 23rd.

ONE IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO THREATS AT BLOOMFIELD SCHOOL

One person has been taken into custody in connection to threats at Bloomfield Schools.

According to the Bloomfield Department of Public Safety, on Thursday, DPS received reports of two possible threats communicated by two students at Bloomfield Schools.

An investigation was conducted that resulted in one suspect being taken into custody.

Officials say they will continue to investigate the second incident, however it has been determined that it was a non-credible threat.

Bloomfield DPS Director James Dew says that this is an investigation involving juveniles and no further information will be released.

THREE POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL CAMPUSES HAVE NEW HEALTH CLINICS

New school clinics have been opened at three Poplar Bluff R-1 campuses.

According to school officials, School-based health clinics are functioning at three sites within the Poplar Bluff School District this academic year as the result of a grant initiative aimed at increasing access to health care in the region.

Missouri Highlands expanded its operation to include Eugene Field, O’Neal, and the Middle School based on acuity of need and designated space.

The clinics have a board-certified family nurse practitioner, licensed practical nurse, and patient services rep. The medical team rotates building sites on a fixed schedule throughout the week.

The startup costs for the equipment and supplies needed to open the Poplar Bluff clinics, along with Doniphan, were funded by a two-year $350,000 grant expansion. The initial grant secured by the nonprofit three years ago, valued at $400,000, covered Lone Star, Naylor and Neelyville.

Guardians will be contacted to provide consent for wellness checks in the fully functioning medical laboratory, and insurance carriers will be billed by the organization with sliding scale discount payment options available based on household income level.

ESSEX MAN SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON FOLLOWING GUILTY PLEA FOR STATUTORY SODOMY AND ATTEMPTED RAPE

An Essex man will spend the rest of his life behind bars following his guilty plea to multiple sex related charges.

According to Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Sawyer Smith, earlier this week Shea Johnson, of Essex, pled guilty to five counts of Statutory Sodomy 1st Degree with a child under the age of 14 and one count of Attempted Rape 1st Degree with a child under the age of 14, among other charges.

The crimes were alleged to have occurred in 2020.

Johnson, who has been categorized as a “predatory sexual offender,” received six consecutive life imprisonment sentences for the charges.

33RD ANNUAL OLD GREENVILLE DAYS SET FOR THIS WEEKEND

The 33rd Annual Old Greenville Days will be held this weekend.

According to the Wappapello Lake US Army Corps of Engineers, the annual event has been scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the Greenville Recreation Area.

Time is running out for parents to get their kids registered for youth basketball in Poplar Bluff.

According to Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation, today is the final day to register for 1st through 6th grades youth basketball.

Games will be played at the Poplar Bluff Middle School and Black River coliseum. Practices will tentatively start the week of September 30th with games scheduled to begin around the week of October 28th.

TWO BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF THE HEARTLAND LEADERS HONORED AT CONFERENCE

Two leaders of the Boys and Girls Club of the Heartland were honored at a conference this week.

According to a post on the Boys and Girls Club of the Heartland Facebook Page, Boys and Girls Club Chief Operating Officer Robbie Toth-Cosby was inducted into the Missouri Area Council Hall of Fame.

She has been the driving force behind countless initiatives at the Club, including expanding the clubs and creating an award-winning college program.

Boys and Girls Club Board President Lara Moffitt also won the Missouri Area Council Liaison of the Year award. The announcement post says that Moffitt’s leadership has strengthened partnerships and secured funding for programs, making a difference in the lives of many of the club members.

Both were honored during the Boys and Girls Clubs Missouri Conference.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI CONSERVATION AREA TO BE TEMPORARY CLOSED THIS WEEK

A Southeast Missouri conservation area will be temporarily closed this week.

The Missouri Department of Conservation’s Little River Conservation Area in Dunklin and Pemiscot counties will be temporarily closed through Saturday due to continued access road bridge construction.

MDC Construction Project Manager Joaquin Marquez tells KWOC News that the contractors will be removing all components of the temporary access road and replacing the borrowed soil east of the bridge. Marquez added that removal of the temporary access is one of the final stages of the construction project.

Little River Conservation Area is located five miles east of Kennett on Highway 412.

TWO DETAINED IN CONNECTION TO THREATS AT AREA SCHOOLS, INCLUDING POPLAR BLUFF

Two people have been detained in connection to the recent threats at area schools.

Sierra Elliott, Chief Juvenile Officer of the 36th Judicial Circuit, tells KWOC News that the Juvenile Office is actively collaborating with local schools and law enforcement to address recent social media threats impacting area school districts.

Over the past week, schools and law enforcement have been conducting ongoing investigations across multiple school districts.

As a result of those investigations, a juvenile linked to recent threats involving the Poplar Bluff School District has been identified, along with another student who had previously made threats at school.

Both individuals are currently detained in an area detention center and formal charges have been filed.

Elliott is urging parents to discuss the seriousness of sharing or spreading threatening messages on social media with their children. She added that it is crucial to emphasize that such actions can have serious legal consequences.

PBHS STUDENT CHOSEN TO BE MEMBER OF NATIONAL FFA BAND

A Poplar Bluff High School student will join other students from across the country to play at the National FFA Convention next month.

PBHS sophomore Preston Ethridge has been selected to perform among 100 students as a part of the National FFA Band.

School officials say this the first time in the history of Poplar Bluff High School since the local chapter of the leadership development organization was chartered in 2002 that a student has been chosen for the National FFA Band.

Preston, a trumpet player and section leader for the Sho-Me Marching Band, will perform “and help bring full instrumental balance to the band” several times including at Lucas Oil Stadium, the Artsgarden and various special awards functions, according to a National FFA press release.

To be considered, he submitted a video audition and application over the summer and was notified of his placement last month.

ADVANCE SCHOOLS SECURED FOLLOWING THREAT

Advance schools have been secured by authorities following a threat on Wednesday.

According to Advance R-4 Schools Superintendent Shannon Garner, Advance Schools received a threat of a pipe bomb at the school.

Protocols and procedures were followed and students were evacuated and accounted for.

Garners says that the buildings have been secured by Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Stoddard County Sheriff's Office and that school will be in session on Thursday.

Garner is asking students and parents to not keep sharing these hoax threats on social media.

SEARCH LEADS TO DRUG ARREST IN DONIPHAN

A Doniphan man has been taken into custody on a drug charge.

According to the Doniphan Police Department, late Tuesday night officers made contact with 39 year old Christopher Story in connection with an outstanding Butler County Warrant.

A search was conducted which resulted in officers finding a rock-like substance that tested positive for methamphetamine.

Officials say that Story was booked into the Ripley County Detention Center on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance as well as a Butler County failure-to-appear warrant.
