VOTING UNDERWAY IN MISSOURI’S PRIMARY ELECTION

Polls have opened for the Missouri Primary Election.

Voters will be deciding on nominations and propositions on both the state and local level today.

You can find your voting location online at sos.mo.gov/elections. Polls will close at 7 pm, and anyone in line to vote at that time will still get to cast a ballot.

TWO STATE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS TO APPEAR ON MISSOURI PRIMARY BALLOTS

Missouri residents will be voting on two state constitutional amendments during today's Primary election.

Constitutional Amendment 1 would allow places where individuals, corporations, organizations, and associations provide childcare outside of the child’s home to be exempt from property tax.

Constitutional Amendment 4 would authorize laws, passed before December 31st, 2026, that increase minimum funding for a police force established by a state board of police commissioners to ensure such police force has additional resources to serve its communities.

This amendment would authorize a law passed in 2022 increasing required funding by the City of Kansas City for police department requests from 20 percent of general revenue to 25 percent, an increase of over thirty eight million dollars.

MAN ACCUSED OF TAPING EXPLICIT PICTURES TO DISPLAY AT ROGERS THEATER

A man is facing charges after he allegedly taped explicit photos to a display at Rogers Theater.

According to a Probable Cause Affidavit, on July 27th, an employee at the business told an officer that a subject had taped sexually explicit pictures to a display at the front of the business, which was clearly visible from the sidewalk.

At the time, a large group of people, including children, were attending a movie showing inside the theater.

The officer was able to identify the subject as Tori Pennington from video footage. During an interview. Pennington admitted to posting the images.

Officers later found child pornography during a search of Pennington’s phone.

Pennington is being held in the Butler County Justice Center on charges of public display of explicit sexual material and two counts of felony possession of child pornography.

SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH KILLS FOUR IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A single vehicle crash in Northeast Arkansas has claimed the lives of four people.

According to the Arkansas State Police, the crash occurred Friday on Clay County Road 232 when a vehicle driven by 27 year old Jordan Rainwater, of Knobel, failed to negotiate a curve, ran off the roadway, and rolled over.

The vehicle came to rest upside down in a ditch.

Rainwater was killed as a result of the crash, as were his passengers, 47 year old Johnny Holt, of Lepanto, 44 year old Brian Pruett, of Blytheville, and 30 year old Jonathan Sanchez, of Trumann.

THREE FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A CRASH IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Three people were flown from the scene of a crash Sunday night in Dunklin County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 57 year old Cornelius Van Der Westhuizen, of Gobbler, was driving on Route NN when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck another vehicle head on.

Van Der Westhuizen and two occupants of the second vehicle all suffered serious injuries and were flown to Memphis hospitals.

According to an arrest report from the Highway Patrol, Van Der Westhuizen is facing charges of driving while intoxicated and failure to drive on the right half of the roadway resulting in a crash.

POPLAR BLUFF HOUSING AUTHORITY TO HOST BLOCK PARTY

The Poplar Bluff Housing Authority will be throwing a block party tonight.

The National Night Out Block Party will be held from 5 to 8 pm at the Housing Authority on North E Street.

The event will include food, games, a petting zoo, music, family activities, and more.

Officials say that the Block Party is to promote strong police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.

COMPETITIVE LOCAL RACES IN CARTER COUNTY

Wrapping up our series on competitive local races that will be decided Tuesday during the Missouri Primary, we now turn to Carter County.

There are two races for the Carter County Commission. For the Eastern District Republican nomination, Tom Wilder will take on Paul Dunnegan and Joe Crites. In the Western District, Erik McSpadden will challenge Mike Hoerner for the Republican Nomination.

The race for the county Assessor nomination is between Gary Rector and Dustin Bryant.

Residents in Carter County will also be voting on a use tax question.

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK BY A VEHICLE NEAR POPLAR BLUFF

A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle late Friday evening near Poplar Bluff.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 49 year old Peggy Ledford, of Poplar Bluff, was hit by a vehicle on Business 67, shortly after 9:30 pm.

Ledford suffered serious injuries and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

OZARK BORDER ANNUAL MEETING SCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 11TH

The annual membership meeting of the Ozark Border Electric Cooperative will be conducted this week.

According to a letter sent to members, the meeting will be held at 2:30 pm on Friday, August 9th at the Ozark Border Headquarters on South Westwood Boulevard in Poplar Bluff.

Voting will be conducted on multiple dates and locations this week in the leadup to the meeting. Voting and registration will be available for all members Today at the Malden Ozark Border Office, on Tuesday at the Puxico Office, on Wednesday at the Van Buren Office, and on Thursday at the Doniphan Office. Those four locations will be open for voting on their respective dates from 9 am to 3 pm.

Voting will be available at the Poplar Bluff Ozark Border Electric Headquarters on Friday from 7 am to 2 pm.

TEEN INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH

An area teenager was injured in a single vehicle crash Friday night.

According to authorities, the 16 year old female, from Ellington, was driving on Highway M in Butler County when her vehicle ran off the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned.

The teen suffered serious injuries and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

MAN ARRESTED ON RAPE CHARGE IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A man is in custody in Northeast Arkansas on a rape charge.

According to Captain Jason Elms with the Paragould Police Department, 35 year old Alan Oliver was taken into custody Thursday on a warrant for two felony counts of rape.

The warrant alleges that Oliver forced a minor to participate in sexual acts.

Oliver is being held in the Greene County Jail and no bond information was released.

GRANT SUBMISSION TO BE TOPIC OF PUBLIC MEETING IN POPLAR BLUFF

A public hearing will be held this evening in Poplar Bluff to discuss a grant application.

The City of Poplar Bluff will conduct the hearing at 6:45 p.m., in the City Council Chambers on South Fifth Street, to discuss the city’s submission of an application for the Community Development Block Grant program.

The city is proposing to make repairs to approximately 2.25 miles of city streets. The area to be addressed includes 5th, 9th, Park, Relief, Main and N. C Streets.

The city proposes to contribute approximately $225,000 in-kind labor by city crews, with grant funds of approximately $500,000 needed to make up the balance.

POPLAR BLUFF ALUMNUS KAMERON MISNER CALLED UP TO TAMPA BAY RAYS

A Poplar Bluff native has made it to the Major Leagues.

Kameron Misner is being called up to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Misner graduated from Poplar Bluff High School in 2016, and was drafted by the Kansas City Royals, but decided to attend the University of Missouri.

He was then drafted by the Florida Marlins with the 35th overall pick in 2019 and traded to the Rays in 2021.

This year for the Rays' Triple-A affiliate, the Durham Bulls, Misner is batting .247 with 15 home runs and 45 RBI's.

The Rays will be in St. Louis to take on the Cardinals for a three game series beginning on Tuesday next week.

MISSOURI SALES TAX HOLIDAY IS THIS WEEKEND

Missouri’s annual back to school sales tax holiday is underway.

According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, the tax holiday began this morning and will run through Sunday, August 4th.

During this time, certain back-to-school purchases such as school supplies, computers, clothing and other qualifying items as defined by statute are exempt from all state and local sales tax or use tax taxes.

Eligible items include clothing that does not have a taxable value of more than $100 and personal computers that do not cost more than $1,500, among other items.

COMPETITIVE LOCAL RACES IN WAYNE COUNTY

Wayne County is our focus for today as we look at local races that will be decided during the primary election next week.

There are two competitive races for Republican nominations.

In the first, Sheriff Dean Finch is facing three challengers for his seat, Kyle Shearrer, Jordan Ottwell, and Shane Babb.

Incumbent Beverly Finch is being challenged by Frances Huitt for the Republican nomination for county Assessor.

There are no competitive races for the Democratic Party.

COMPETITIVE RACES IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

We are less than a week away from the Missouri Primary and there are interesting races shaping up.

For the Republican nomination for Missouri District 8 in the United States House of Representatives, Jason Smith is facing challengers James Snider and Grant Heithold. For the Democratic nomination for the seat, Randi McCallian will take on Franklin Roth II.

For Missouri Circuit 35 Judge, Daren Keith Todd will face off with Robert Mayer for the Republican nomination.

In the Missouri House of Representatives, Joe Loyd, Tony Harbison, and Paul Usher are battling for the nomination for the 144th District. The 153rd District will see Vinnie Clubb take on Keith Elliott.

SCHOOL BUS DRIVER TRAINING SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

School bus drivers will have a chance to get training today in Poplar Bluff.

According to school officials, Poplar Bluff schools will be hosting bus driver training today at the Kay Porter Theater.

Training will be provided by the Missouri United School Insurance Council from 9 a.m. to noon and the Transportation Security Administration from 1 to 3 p.m.

SEAL COAT OPERATIONS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TODAY IN CARTER COUNTY

Missouri Department of Transportation crews will be making driving surface improvements on Route K in Carter and Oregon Counties.

The work zone is located from Route J in Carter County to the end of state maintenance in Oregon County. A 12-foot width restriction will be in place while work is underway.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Tuesday, August 6th from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

MISSOURI GOVERNOR SIGNS CEREMONIAL BUDGET BILL IN POPLAR BLUFF

Missouri Governor Mike Parson was in Poplar Bluff Wednesday for a ceremonial signing of House Bill 4.

Parson signed the bill at Haff Whiskey Saloon in downtown Poplar Bluff, surrounded by state and local leaders, including Lieutenant Governor Mike Kehoe, Missouri State Senators Jason Bean and Lincoln Hough, Former State Senator Doug Libla, Arkansas State Senator Blake Johnson, Missouri State Representative Hardy Billington, Missouri House Speaker Dean Plocher, Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce President Steve Halter, Bill Robison, and others.

House Bill 4 provides for $150 million in the Fiscal Year 2025 Budget to go to improvements to U.S. Highway 67 in Butler County.

EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING THAT HAS COVERED SOUTHEAST MISSOURI EXPECTED TO COME TO AN END TODAY

Dangerous heat and humidity is expected to continue today.

According to the National Weather Service, highs in the mid to upper 90s will combine with very high humidity today to produce peak heat index values between 105 and 115 degrees.

An excessive heat warning remains in effect for most of Southeast Missouri through 8 pm tonight.

Residents are advised to take proper precautions if you plan on spending any time outdoors today.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun, and wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours.

RIPLEY COUNTY SHERIFF CANDIDATES TO GATHER FOR FORUM TONIGHT

Today’s Talk KWOC will be hosting a forum this evening between two of the candidates for Ripley County Sheriff.

Charlie Mays and Rad Talburt are each challenging incumbent Sheriff Mike Barton for the seat.

Republican voters in Ripley County will be selecting between Gary Emmons and Jim Enterline for the Associate County Commissioner nomination for the Eastern District.

There are six candidates for the Associate County Commissioner nomination for the Western District; Shannon Jones, Walter Wells, Keith Whiteside, Andy Towell, David Nickell, and Jack Jones.

For the Republican nomination for Sheriff, Charlie Mays and Rad Talburt are each challenging Mike Barton.

The battle for the Republican nomination for Public Administrator is between Kelsey Johnson and Donna Barnett.

Residents in Doniphan will also be voting on a Doniphan Township Committeeman nomination which features Donnie Johnson Jr. taking on Steve Collins.

There are no competitive local races for Democratic nominations in Ripley County.

FREE STUDENT ATHLETE PHYSICALS SCHEDULED FOR TONIGHT IN POPLAR BLUFF

Poplar Bluff High School and Junior High student athletes can get a free physical done tonight at the High School.

Physicals will be conducted beginning at 5:30 pm for athletes in the 7th and 8th grades, beginning at 6:30 pm for 9th and 10th grades, and beginning at 7:30 pm for 11th and 12th grades.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TODAY ON INTERSTATE 55

Southbound Interstate 55 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction beginning today as contractor crews mill the roadway.

The section of roadway being reduced is located between Sikeston and Matthews.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Monday, August 5th from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

MISSOURI GOVERNOR TO BE IN POPLAR BLUFF TODAY FOR CEREMONIAL SIGNING OF BUDGET BILL

Missouri Governor Mike Parson will be in Poplar Bluff today.

Parson will be appearing this afternoon for a ceremonial signing of House Bill 4, which provided for $150 million in the Fiscal Year 2025 Budget for improvements to U.S. Highway 67 in Butler County.

RIPLEY COUNTY FAIR SET FOR THIS WEEK

The 2024 Ripley County Fair will kick off this week.

Officials say that the fair will be held this year from today through Saturday at the Fairgrounds, south of Doniphan.

Multiple activities are planned for the four day event, including a beauty pageant, loggers relay, carnival, rodeo, truck pull, and more.

COMPETITIVE LOCAL RACES IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Our series on competitive local races that will be decided during the primary election next week continues today as we look to Dunklin County.

There are two Republican races that will be decided on Tuesday. Aaron Waynick is challenging Nick Darter for the Sheriff nomination and James Powell will face Larry Young for the Coroner nomination.

There are no competitive local races for Democratic nominations in Dunklin County.

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR ADULT FALL SOFTBALL LEAGUE IN POPLAR BLUFF

Registration is now open for the adult fall softball league in Poplar Bluff.

Officials with Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation say that there will be a men's church league, women’s league, and a coed league.

Team registrations are being accepted through August 2nd and there will be a 10 game season with tournament play.

INTERSTATE IMPROVEMENTS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Northbound Interstate 55 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction today so contractor crews can mill the roadway.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of roadway is located from mile marker 54.6 to mile marker 56 near Matthews.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through 6 p.m.

Missouri Department of Transportation crews will be making driving surface improvements this week on Route W in Carter County.

The work zone is located from Route 60 to Business 60 in Van Buren. A 12-foot width restriction will be in place.

COMPETITIVE LOCAL RACES IN BUTLER COUNTY

Continuing our series on competitive local races that will be decided during the primary election next week, we now turn to Butler County.

There are only two competitive local races to be decided by Republican voters in Butler County, that being the battles for the Eastern and Western District County Commissioner nominations.

The Eastern District race will see Dan St. Lawrence, Wes Gilmore, Ralph Stucker, Rowdy Boyer, and Andy Clark all face off.

The Nomination for Western District County Commission will be between Larry Wells, Kenny Barker, TJ Akers, and Bobby Sheppard.

There are no competitive local races for Democratic nominations in Butler County.

BUTLER COUNTY REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE FORUM TO BE HELD TONIGHT

Candidates for Republican nominations in Butler County will be assembling for a forum tonight at the Butler County Courthouse.

The Butler County Republican Candidate Forum will begin at 6 pm and will be broadcast live on Today’s Talk KWOC 93.3 FM and 930 AM, and streamed live on the Today's Talk KWOC Facebook Page and the River Radio YouTube channel.

Four of the five candidates for Eastern District Commissioner will be speaking as will many of the Western District Commissioner candidates.

Each candidate will be given five minutes to speak.

Other local officials who are not facing competitive races will also be speaking during the event as will the outgoing eastern and western district commissioners, Don “Butch” Anderson and Dennis “Boots” Legrand.

EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING BEGINS TODAY IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

An excessive heat warning will go into effect today for much of Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service, the heat warning will begin today at 11 am, and continue until 8 pm on Wednesday.

Dangerously hot conditions with heat index readings of around 110 degrees are expected, with locally higher readings of up to 115 degrees possible.

Officials say that it is likely that the conditions will continue into Thursday, as well.

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK BY VEHICLE ON HIGHWAY 53 IN BUTLER COUNTY

A man was hit by a vehicle Monday morning in Butler County.

According to authorities, 33 year old Trevor Young, of Wappapello was struck on the shoulder of Highway 53 shortly before 7 am.

The incident occurred six miles south of Poplar Bluff.

Young suffered serious injuries and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

BICYCLIST STRUCK BY A VEHICLE NEAR PUXICO

A bicyclist was struck by a vehicle Sunday evening in Stoddard County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 60 year old Gregory Garter, of Fisk, was struck from behind on Missouri Highway 51, shortly before 6 pm Sunday night.

Garter suffered serious injuries in the crash and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

TWO TEENAGERS INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH

Two teenagers were injured in a crash Monday afternoon.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly before 12:30 pm on Missouri Highway 34 when a vehicle ran off the side of the roadway, overturned, and struck a tree.

The driver, a 16 year old male from Greenville, suffered serious injuries and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

A 17 year old passenger received moderate injuries and was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

QULIN COMMUNITY TO DISCUSS GRANT SUBMISSION

Upgrades to the Qulin Nutrition Center will be the topic of discussion at an upcoming public hearing.

The City of Qulin will host the hearing at 3:30 pm this afternoon at the Qulin City Hall.

The city is proposing to discuss an application submission for building expansion, on behalf of the Nutrition Center. The total project cost is estimated to be up to $500,000.

Qulin will not contribute monetarily, however the Nutrition Center proposes to contribute $30,000 in cash with grant funds of up to $500,000 needed to make up the balance.

POPLAR BLUFF PARKS AND RECREATION TO HOST BACK TO SCHOOL BASH THIS WEEKEND

The Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation Department has started preparations for the end of summer event.

The Free Back to School Bash has been scheduled for 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday at Whiteley Park in Poplar Bluff.

There will be music, yard games, food trucks, and fun for the entire family. Registration is open for food trucks as well as for local organizations who want to give away school supplies at the event.

COMPETITIVE LOCAL RACES IN STODDARD COUNTY

Today we begin a look at competitive local races that will be decided during the primary election next week with a look at Stoddard County.

Republican voters in Stoddard County will be selecting between Darren Todd and Rob Mayer for Circuit 35 Circuit Judge. Thomas Forkum and Carl Hefner are facing off for the GOP nomination for Sheriff.

The Coroner Race is between Brent Stidham and Charlie Roberston.

There are no competitive local races for Democratic nominations in Stoddard County.

HOT AND HUMID TEMPERATURES EXPECTED TODAY IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Excessive heat and humidity is expected to cause dangerous conditions today in Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service, heat index values could reach as high as 110 degrees today in portions of our listening area.

The heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

Everyone is reminded to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions if you have to work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours.

SEVERAL PEOPLE HURT DURING SHOOTING IN CARUTHERSVILLE

Multiple people were shot during an incident early Sunday morning in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Caruthersville Police Department, at around 1 am, officers were dispatched to the area of 7th Street near 20th Street in reference to a possible shooting.

At the scene, officers located several gunshot victims and damaged property, with other victims reporting to surrounding medical facilities.

A large crowd was gathered in the area, so officers from the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department, Hayti Police Department, Kennett Police Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and Missouri Department of Conservation all assisted in securing the scene.

An investigation is ongoing and anyone who witnessed the event or has information about it is asked to call 573-333-2121.

HAWK RESCUED FROM BASKETBALL NET IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A bird was found trapped in a basketball net last week in Northeast Arkansas.

According to Greene County Sheriff Brad Snyder, dispatch recently received a call regarding a bird of prey being stuck in a basketball goal net near the Sheriff’s Office.

Two deputies responded to the scene and found a young red-tailed hawk entangled in the net and unable to free itself.

The deputies were able to free the hawk from the basketball goal without any harm to the hawk or himself.

Snyder says the hawk was able to fly away under its own power.

ROAD IMPROVEMENT PROJECT BEGINS TODAY IN WAYNE AND CARTER COUNTIES

Missouri Department of Transportation crews will be making driving surface improvements this week on Route KK in Wayne and Carter Counties.

The section of roadway involved in the project is located from Route 34 in Wayne County to the end of state maintenance in Carter County. A 12-foot width restriction will be in place.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Wednesday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON MULTIPLE CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGES

A Poplar Bluff man was taken into custody early Thursday morning on multiple child pornography related charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 45 year old Michael McDaniel was arrested shortly after midnight on three felony counts of possession of child pornography and one felony count of promoting child pornography.

Following the arrest, McDaniel was held at the Butler County Justice Center.

POPLAR BLUFF MAYOR SHANE CORNMAN PRESENTS KEY TO THE CITY TO SENATOR JASON BEAN

A Missouri State Senator from Southeast Missouri is being recognized for his work in helping the citizens of Poplar Bluff.

On Thursday, Poplar Bluff Mayor Shane Cornman presented a Key to the City to Senator Jason Bean. Senator Bean has represented residents in Missouri State Senate District #25 since 2021.

Bean was instrumental in securing $150 million dollars for the region’s Highway 67/Interstate 57 project.

MOVIE SHOWING TO INCLUDE DISCUSSION WITH LOCAL WEATHER PANELISTS

A panel discussion will be held this weekend as a part of a showing of a new blockbuster movie in Poplar Bluff.

The AMC Classic 8 will host a screening of the new movie Twisters at 10 am on Saturday.

A back to school event has been scheduled for today in Doniphan.

The Ripley County Back to School Extravaganza will be held from 2 to 7 pm this afternoon at the St. Benedict Parish Hall on East Pine Street.

There will be school supplies, lice checks, haircuts, immunizations, and more at the event.

Students must be enrolled in a Ripley County School District and accompanied by a parent or guardian to attend.

Now is the time to register your team for fall youth baseball and softball in Poplar Bluff.

According to Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation, the final day for teams to be registered for the league is Friday. Leagues for fall youth baseball and softball will be available for children from 7 to 12 years old.

DATE SET FOR DUCK BLIND DRAWING AT WAPPAPELLO LAKE

A date has been announced for the annual duck blind drawing at Wappapello Lake.

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers the drawing and registration will be held at 9:00 a.m. on August 17th, at the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitors Center.

The registration fee is $15 and applicants are asked to use a credit or debit card.

Permitted duck blinds may be placed on the lake after Labor Day and must be removed from the lake, or transferred to a permitted storage cove, within two weeks of the closure of the zoned duck season.

4-H DAY AT THE LAKE SET FOR AUGUST 7TH AND 8TH

Kids will have the opportunity for a fun day at the lake coming up in early August.

The 4-H Day at the Lake at the Lake Wappapello Visitor Center has been scheduled for 9 am to 3:30 pm on Wednesday August 7th for kids ages eight to 18 and for Thursday, August 8th for kids ages five to seven.

Each child will receive a backpack full of items such as a water bottle, a compass, a first aid kit, sunglasses, a flashlight, a whistle, a magnifying glass, a notebook, binoculars, a 4-H t-shirt, and much more.

EARTHQUAKE SHAKES PARTS OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

An earthquake shook parts of Southeast Missouri Wednesday morning.

According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 2.4 earthquake was recorded at 7:32 am.

The quake was centered approximately two and a half miles west of Parma and had a depth of over three miles.

CRISIS EXEMPTION DECLARED FOR INSECTICIDE USE AGAINST ARMYWORMS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Southeast Missouri farmers have approval to use an insecticide against armyworms.

Missouri Director of Agriculture Chris Chinn has declared a Crisis Exemption through Section 18 of the EPA’s Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. MDA received EPA concurrence for the crisis declaration, allowing the use of Intrepid 2F Insecticide to mitigate armyworms in Missouri rice.

The Crisis Exemption went into effect July 18 in 11 counties, including Butler, Stoddard, Pemiscot, Dunklin, New Madrid, and Ripley. The Department will submit a Specific Exemption application to the EPA to extend the exemption through September 30th.

An estimated 60,000 acres of Missouri rice will experience fall armyworm populations that may require use of the insecticide. It is believed the rapid influx of fall armyworms in southeast Missouri is due to the recent winds associated with Hurricane Beryl.

OVER TWO MONTH PAVEMENT IMPROVEMENT PROJECT UNDERWAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route 91 in Stoddard and Scott Counties will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction for over two months as contractor crews improve bridge approaches and resurface the roadway.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of roadway being reduced is located between Route P near Bell City and Route 61 at Morley.

Weather permitting, work will take place through Tuesday, October 1st from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Motorists should anticipate lane closures in various locations as work is completed along Route 91.

GUARDRAIL REPAIR PROJECT BEGINS TODAY ON US 412

U.S. Route 412 in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction beginning today so construction crews can perform guardrail repairs. 

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the work zone is located at County Road 601 near Cardwell.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Friday, August 2nd.

NO EXCUSE ABSENTEE VOTING BEGINS FOR UPCOMING PRIMARY ELECTION

Missouri residents can now vote absentee for the upcoming primary election without having a reason to do so.

No excuse absentee voting began today for the Missouri Primary, which is scheduled for August 6th.

An absentee ballot can be requested from your local election authority. According to the Butler County Clerk’s office, a photo ID will be needed if someone wants to vote absentee.

MAJOR DISASTER DECLARATION APPROVED FOR MULTIPLE COUNTIES IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

The Biden administration has approved a request for a Major Disaster Declaration which includes multiple Southeast Missouri communities.

Missouri Governor Mike Parson tells KWOC News that the declaration is in response to multiple severe weather systems that generated tornadoes, high winds, and flooding across southern Missouri from May 19th through the 27th.

The declaration makes federal Individual Assistance available to eligible residents in 10 counties, including Butler, Carter, New Madrid, Ripley, Scott, Shannon, and Stoddard.

Individual Assistance allows eligible residents to seek federal assistance with temporary housing, housing repairs, replacement of damaged belongings, vehicles, and other qualifying expenses.

Individuals who sustained damage or losses due to severe weather between May 19 and 27 may now apply for FEMA disaster assistance online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling FEMA’s toll-free application line at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).

Affected individuals are encouraged to document losses, photograph damage, and retain receipts. The faster Missourians register with FEMA, the faster they may be able to receive assistance.

POPLAR BLUFF MULE CAMP AND 7TH GRADE ORIENTATION SCHEDULED FOR THURSDAY

Poplar Bluff 7th Graders will get a slice of what Junior High is going to look like during the Mule Camp event and 7th Grade Orientation on Thursday.

The student only event will be from 10 am to noon on Thursday at the Poplar Bluff Junior High School.

Due to the ongoing work on the Junior High parking lot, students will need to be dropped off and picked up in the back lot behind the school.

FAFSA FRENZY EVENT SCHEDULED FOR TODAY AT THREE RIVERS COLLEGE

An event has been scheduled for today in Poplar Bluff to help students and their families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

FAFSA Frenzy is scheduled for 10 am to 2 pm at the Westover Administration Building on the campus of Three Rivers College.

Staff from the Missouri College and Career Attainment Network will be available to answer questions and provide one-on-one assistance with FAFSA completion. The event is available for free to students.

AREA NEAR CALDWELL CREEK CLOSED DUE TO POTENTIAL ALGAE BLOOM

An investigation has prompted the closure of an area around a Southeast Missouri creek.

According to the US Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake, officials have decided to close the area near Caldwell Creek as a precaution after being informed of a potential algae bloom impacting the area.

Officials are looking into the matter and collaborating with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to determine if there is any reason for concern.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS TO BEGIN TODAY IN THE CARDWELL AREA

Route V in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway involved in the project is located between Route 164 and County Road 610 near Cardwell.

ONE DEAD, ANOTHER INJURED, IN CONNECTION TO CRASH IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

One man is dead in connection to a weekend crash in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 51 year old Alphonso Savage, of Chicago, Illinois, was driving on Interstate 55 Sunday night when his vehicle struck the towed unit of another vehicle.

Savage was transported to a Hayti hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A passenger in the other vehicle received minor injuries.

ROYAL REGISTRATION DATE SET FOR TWIN RIVERS SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Twin Rivers School District has announced that it will be holding a two day registration event for students next month.

Royal Registration is scheduled for noon to 6 pm on Tuesday, August 6th for students whose parent or guardian’s last name begins with A-K and Thursday, August 8th for students whose parent or guardian’s last name begins with L-Z. Both will be held at Twin Rivers High School in Broseley.

There will be booths set up to distribute student class schedules and allow students to have their school picture taken.

MAN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION TO THE THEFT OF A MOTORCYCLE IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

A motorcycle theft has led to the arrest of a Marston man.

According to the Portageville Police Department, at approximately 8:35 pm Saturday, police were notified of a motorcycle that had been stolen in the city of Marston.

Less than 10 minutes later, officers with the Portageville Police Department located the motorcycle traveling southbound on Highway 61.

During a traffic stop, officers learned that the driver, 46 year old Christopher Long, of Marston, was in possession of narcotic related items and had a revoked driving status.

Long was taken into custody on felony warrants for stealing a motor vehicle, tampering with a motor vehicle 1st degree, possession of a controlled substance, and driving while revoked.

His bond was set at $5,000, cash or surety.

CITY OF FISK TO HOST PUBLIC HEARING TODAY

A local community will be holding a public hearing today concerning a grant application.

The city of Fisk is proposing a project that consists of, but is not limited to, the paving and repair of the existing roadbed, addressing settlement issues, as well as overlaying and paving all or sections of various streets within the city.

Approximately 312 residences will benefit from the project and the estimated cost is expected to be up to $500,000. The city will provide approximately $10,000 in local cash match while applying for up to $500,000 in CDBG Funding.

A public hearing about the project will begin at 1 p.m. today at the Fisk City Hall.

DRIVING SURFACE IMPROVEMENTS SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK IN STODDARD COUNTY

PRESIDENT BIDEN ENDS REELECTION CAMPAIGN, ENDORSES VP HARRIS FOR NOMINATION

President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race for the White House on Sunday, ending his bid for reelection.

The decision comes after escalating pressure from Biden’s Democratic allies to step aside following the June 27 debate.

Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to take on former president Dondald Trump, and encouraged his party to unite behind her.

Biden plans to serve out the remainder of his term in office, which ends at noon on January 20, 2025.

The new school year is coming up in Southeast Missouri and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is reminding parents to make sure that their children have the required immunizations.

Children attending kindergarten through 12th grade are required to have the following immunizations or booster shots: DtaP, IPV, Hepatitis B, MMR, and Varicella.

8th through 12th grade students are also required to have the Tdap and MCV immunizations.

SUSPECT IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING THEFT OF MSHP VEHICLE

A suspect is in custody following the theft of a Missouri State Highway Patrol vehicle on Sunday.

Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Highway Patrol tells KWOC News that troopers were handling a stolen motorcycle arrest when a suspect stole a Highway Patrol vehicle.

State Troopers pursued the vehicle and were able to successfully deploy spike strips.

The suspect stopped in a wooded area of US Forest Service property in Wayne County and fled on foot. Parrott says that it appears that the firearms from the patrol vehicle are secure.

The suspect was later taken into custody and no information about their identity was available.

POPLAR BLUFF HOUSING AUTHORITY TO HOST BLOCK PARTY

The Poplar Bluff Housing Authority will be throwing a block party in early August.

The National Night Out Block Party will be held from 5 to 8 pm on August 6th at the Housing Authority on North E Street.

The event will include food, games, a petting zoo, music, family activities, and more.

Officials say that the Block Party is to promote strong police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.

Northbound U.S. Route 67 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction beginning today as contractor crews perform guardrail repairs.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of roadway being reduced is located near Route O at the Butler/Wayne County line.

ROUTE AC TO BE CLOSED TODAY NEAR BLOOMFIELD IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route AC in Stoddard County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

The section of roadway being closed is located between County Road 227 and County Road 232 near Bloomfield.

PLANS UNDERWAY TO REPLACE TWO BRIDGES IN BUTLER COUNTY

The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced plans to replace two bridges in Southeast Missouri.

According to officials, the bridges are located on Route MM over Harviell Ditch, and on Route 158 over Craven Ditch.

Work to replace the bridges could begin as early as January 2025. The roadway will be closed in the vicinity of the Route MM and Route 158 bridges for approximately 90 days as construction is underway. Completion is anticipated by November 2026.

Any person who is affected by the projects can request that a public meeting be held in regard to the proposed improvements.

Comments and questions may also be submitted online at Modot.org/form/ButlerBridges. Comments should be submitted by July 23.

FREE STUDENT ATHLETE PHYSICALS SCHEDULED FOR NEXT MONTH IN POPLAR BLUFF

Poplar Bluff High School and Junior High student athletes can get a free physical done next month at the High School.

Physicals will be conducted beginning at 5:30 pm on Thursday, August 1st for athletes in the 7th and 8th grades, beginning at 6:30 pm for 9th and 10th grades, and beginning at 7:30 pm for 11th and 12th grades.

A car show is coming up this weekend in Poplar Bluff to raise money for Wounded Warriors.

RECTOR MAN IN CUSTODY ON MULTIPLE COUNTS OF RAPE

A Rector man has been taken into custody on multiple charges, including rape.

According to court documents, on June 13th, officers conducted an interview with an underage victim who had run away from home. The victim disclosed sexual mistreatment by an adult that had happened over multiple years.

A warrant was issued for 31 year old Joseph Gore, on charges of rape, sexual indecency with a child, endangering the welfare of a minor, aggravated assault, and terroristic threatening.

Gore was arrested last week and is being held in the Clay County Detention Center on a $100,000, cash only bond.

POPLAR BLUFF HISTORIC TRAIN DEPOT 4TH ANNUAL DINNER AUCTION SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 20TH

A date has been announced for the 4th annual Poplar Bluff Historic Train Depot Dinner Auction.

PUBLIC HEARING SCHEDULED FOR THIS MONTH TO DISCUSS ELLSINORE GRANT APPLICATION

A meeting will be held later this month to discuss a submission for grant money for the city of Ellsinore.

City officials will hold a public hearing at 5:15 p.m. on July 22nd at the Ellsinore City Hall to discuss the city’s submission of an application for a Community Development Block Grant.

The city is proposing to provide an asphalt overlay of sections of 12 city streets and drainage upgrades for the estimated total cap amount of $500,000.

ACTIVE SHOOTER TRAINING TO BE CONDUCTED TODAY AT DEXTER PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Do not be frightened if you see an elevated police presence today at Dexter schools.

According to Captain John Moore, the Dexter Police Department will be conducting Mock Active Shooter training this morning at the Dexter Public Schools.

The Dexter Fire Department, Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Stoddard County EMS, and Dexter Public Schools will be involved in this training.

PUBLIC HEARING SCHEDULED FOR THIS MORNING TO DISCUSS BUTLER COUNTY GRANT APPLICATION

A meeting will be held this morning to discuss a submission for grant money for Butler County.

County officials will hold a public hearing at 8:45 a.m. in the Butler County Courthouse Commissioner Chambers to discuss the County’s submission of an Competitive Cycle application for the fiscal year 2023/2024 Community Development Block Grant program.

The county is proposing the Broseley Phase Two Paving project. Officials say the area to be addressed is portions of County Road 650 and the total project cost is estimated at approximately $235,000.

The county proposes to contribute $12,500 in cash, $37,500 in-kind labor by county crews, with grant funds of $185,000 needed to make up the balance.

BOIL WATER ADVISORY ISSUED FOR SOME BUTLER COUNTY RESIDENTS

A boil water advisory is in effect for some Butler County residents.

Butler County Public Water Supply District #3 has announced that the advisory is for all customers on AA Highway between County Road 625 and Highway 51.

The advisory is in effect until further notice.

TEENAGER FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A CRASH IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A Southeast Missouri teenager was flown from the scene of a crash Monday night.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 18 year old Juan Reyes, of Arbyrd, was driving on Dunklin County Road 602 when his vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway, struck a ditch, and overturned.

Reyes suffered serious injuries in the crash and was flown to a Memphis hospital.

MALDEN RESIDENTS COMPLAINING OF A LARGE NUMBER OF FOXES IN TOWN

One Southeast Missouri community is having a bit of a fox problem.

According to a post on the Malden Department of Public Safety’s Facebook page, they have received several complaints regarding a large number of foxes around town.

Police officials say that some common items that can deter foxes include chili pepper, garlic, lemon peels, or orange peels. Residents should place the deterrents in the area you want the foxes to stay away from.

16TH ANNUAL MULE SKINNER GOLF TOURNAMENT SET FOR AUGUST

The 16th Annual Mule Skinner Golf Tournament is coming up in August.

The four person scramble tournament will be held on Friday, August 2nd at the Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff. Lunch will begin at 11:30 am with a shotgun start at 1 pm.

Organizers say the entry fee is $600 per team, which includes a cart and lunch. Hole sponsorships are available for $200 per hole.

MAN DIES IN SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH

A Paragould man has died following a single vehicle crash over the weekend.

According to the Arkansas State Police, 78 year old Edward Killian, of Paragould, was driving on a rural Greene County road Saturday morning when his vehicle ran off the roadway and overturned.

Emergency personnel found Killian dead at the scene.

SENATH MAN ACCUSED OF BEATING VICTIM WITH TOILET LID

A Senath man is facing an assault charge in connection to an alleged incident at an area health care center.

According to a Probable Cause Affidavit, on Saturday an officer was dispatched to the Senath South Health Care Center in reference to an assault.

Staff told the officer that Christian Ault had taken a toilet lid off the toilet in his room, walked down to the victim’s room, and struck the victim several times in the head with the lid until the lid broke.

The victim was flown to a Jonesboro hospital.

Ault was placed under arrest and transported to the Dunklin County Justice Center. He has been charged with assault 1st degree and his bond was set at $85,000, cash only.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY NEAR DEXTER

Route ZZ in Stoddard County will be reduced this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.

The section of roadway being worked on is located from U.S. Route 60 to County Road 612 near Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. both today and tomorrow.

CREWS TO BE WORKING THIS WEEK ON ROUTE AB IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route AB in Stoddard County will be reduced beginning today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.

The work zone is located from South Route N to County Road 547 in the Clines Island area.

Weather permitting, work will take place both today and tomorrow from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.

HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FOR EARLY THIS WEEK

A Heat Advisory is in effect for the early part of this week.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, the advisory is for most of Southeast Missouri through Tuesday night.

Hot temperatures and high humidity will cause heat index values to rise to approximately 100 to 110 degrees.

Residents are reminded to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room and out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

FORMER PRESIDENT TRUMP INJURED BUT ‘FINE’ AFTER ATTEMPTED ASSISSINATION AT RALLY

Former President Donald Trump was the target of an apparent assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally, days before he was to accept the Republican nomination for a third time.

A barrage of gunfire set off panic Saturday, and a bloodied Trump was surrounded by Secret Service and hurried to his SUV as he pumped his fist in a show of defiance.

Trump’s campaign said the presumptive GOP nominee was doing “fine” after the shooting, which he said pierced the upper part of his right ear.

The FBI early Sunday named 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the subject involved in the assassination attempt. One spectator was killed and two others injured in the shooting at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

President Joe Biden has condemned the attempted assassination of his predecessor as “contrary to everything we stand for as a nation."

MOTORCYCLE CRASH NEAR RISCO KILLS ONE, INJURES ANOTHER

One person is dead following a motorcycle crash over the weekend near Risco.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 67 year old Calvin Morgan, of New Madrid, was riding a motorcycle on US Highway 62 when the motorcycle failed to negotiate a curve, ran off the roadway, and overturned.

Morgan was pronounced dead at the scene by New Madrid County Coroner George Deslisle.

A passenger on the vehicle suffered serious injuries and was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK BY A VEHICLE NEAR QULIN

An Arkansas man was struck by a vehicle late Saturday night in Butler County.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 75 year old Charles Akin, of Manilla, Arkansas was hit by a vehicle shortly after 11 pm on County Road 659, one mile north of Qulin.

Akin suffered serious injuries and was flown to a Memphis hospital.

MAN FACING CHARGES FOR SHOOTING IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A Sikeston man is facing multiple charges in connection to a shooting in Southeast Missouri.

Charleston Department of Public Safety Director Robert Hearnes tells KWOC News that 24 year old Deshauntay Craig, of Sikeston, has been charged with 5 counts of assault 1st degree, 5 counts of armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a stolen vehicle.

The charges stem from a shooting on July 1st with five victims. None of the injuries were life threatening.

Craig is currently incarcerated in the Butler County Jail on unrelated charges.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible. Anyone with information concerning this crime is urged to contact the Charleston DPS at 573 683 3737.

PARMA AWARDED OVER $60,000 FOR WASTEWATER SYSTEM

A Southeast Missouri community will be getting grant money to evaluate its wastewater system.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded a $62,500 Clean Water Engineering Report Grant to the city of Parma.

The city will use the grant to identify wastewater system improvements needed to continue reliable service and reduce stormwater inflow and infiltration into sewer collection pipes. The facility plan should be complete in December 2025.

PIPE REPLACEMENT TO FORCE TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF ROUTE W IN BUTLER COUNTY

Route W in Butler County will be closed early this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert beneath the roadway.

The closure will be located between County Road 536 and County Road 534 near Poplar Bluff.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both today and tomorrow.

CREWS TO CLOSE PORTION OF ROUTE F TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY

Route F in Butler County will be closed today so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can replace a culvert under the roadway.

The section of roadway being closed is located from County Road 484 to County Road 461 near Poplar Bluff.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

NEW ANNUAL REGISTRATION PROCESS ANNOUNCED FOR POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOLS

It is now easier for parents in Poplar Bluff to complete their children’s annual registration for Poplar Bluff Schools.

School officials have announced that most of the back-to-school verification paperwork can now be completed online through the new Campus Parent Portal.

All existing Poplar Bluff School District families must complete the Annual Verification process each year to ensure that school records are up to date.

POLICE INVESTIGATING SHOOTING IN POPLAR BLUFF

Police in Poplar Bluff are investigating a shooting that took place on Thursday.

According to officials, the incident reportedly happened shortly before 5 pm in the area of Main and Pershing Streets.

KWOC News can confirm that one person was shot and taken to a Poplar Bluff hospital. The subject suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Two subjects were detained at the scene.

The incident is under investigation by the Poplar Bluff Police Department.

JEFF NULL ANNOUNCED AS NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTOR FOR THREE RIVERS COLLEGE

A new athletic director has been announced for Three Rivers College.

TRC Softball coach Jeff Null will be taking over for Brian Bess who retired this year.

Null is entering his ninth year at Three Rivers College with a career record of 279-108. He led the Lady Raiders to the NJCAA World Series 2018 and 2021 and earned Region XVI Coach of the Year honors during both seasons. He was also named MCCAC Coach of the Year four times.

Null also coached for 12 years at the high school level, winning six district titles with an overall record of 326-121.

Null was previously the Athletic Director at Naylor High School from 2010 to 2013 and Greenville High School from 2013 to 2016.

MODOT APPROVES NEW POPLAR BLUFF TRAIL TO RUN PARALLEL TO PP HIGHWAY

A new trail in Poplar Bluff will bridge Poplar Bluff’s trail system with the Wolf Creek Trail.

According to the Poplar Bluff Chamber of Commerce, the Missouri Department of Transportation has given approval for the Wolf Creek Connector Trail project.

The new trail will run parallel to PP Highway. Starting from the Dollar General near the roundabout, the trail will extend along the north side of PP Highway all the way to County Road 447.

Work on the trail by Hessling Construction is set to begin on September 9th.

VEHICLE STRIKES ROAD PAVER IN STODDARD COUNTY, ONE INJURED

One person was injured after a vehicle struck a road paver Thursday morning in Stoddard County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident occurred at around 8 am Thursday on Route M, one mile south of Leora.

The driver of the road paver suffered minor injuries and was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

ANNUAL DEXTER GRILLE IT UP SET FOR THIS WEEKEND

Multiple attractions are scheduled for the 8th Annual Dexter Grille It Up this weekend.

The two day event will begin at 5 pm tonight and at 8 am on Saturday at East Park in Dexter.

There will be a car show, mud volleyball tournament, cornhole tournament, and cook off contest, along with numerous vendors and live music, among other attractions.

BULLFEST 2024 SET FOR THIS WEEKEND AT RAY CLINTON PARK

Bull riders will be at Ray Clinton Park this weekend for Bullfest 2024.

The Butler County Fair will be presenting the Hometown Throwdown Bullfest 2024 this Saturday night in Poplar Bluff. The event will begin at 7:30 pm and admission will cost $15, with children five years old and under getting in for free.

There will be calf riding, bull riding, steer riding competitions and more.

POPLAR BLUFF BUS DRIVER NAMED MOAPT DRIVER OF THE YEAR

A Poplar Bluff school bus driver has been named the Missouri Association for Pupil Transportation Driver of the Year.

Jason Davis was recently given the award during the MOAPT 59th Annual Conference and Trade Show.

Davis has been a bus driver since 2017 and is also a certified trainer and bus inspector, on top of running daily routes for the High School and Kindergarten Center.

In addition, Davis was the first of a pair in the Poplar Bluff Transportation Department during the program’s inaugural year in 2022 to receive the “driver to driver” award, a traveling trophy designated for bus drivers that go “above and beyond.”

ARREST MADE IN CONNECTION TO BUTLER COUNTY BURGLARY INVESTIGATION

An arrest has been made in connection to an investigation into multiple burglaries in Butler County.

According to the Butler County Sheriff’s Department, on June 1st, a saw blade grinder was reported stolen from a sawmill in Williamsville.

On July 2nd, a resident reported the burglary of her residence in Williamsville.

On July 3rd, two separate individuals reported burglaries and thefts from their respective camper trailers that were parked on private property near Butler County Road 523A. Trail camera footage captured two individuals who were believed to be responsible.

On July 8th, investigators received information that some of the stolen items were located at a residence in Poplar Bluff. When investigator's arrived at the residence they observed a few stolen items were outside and saw a male flee from the residence on foot.

While executing a search warrant at the home, investigators located James Lewis Boyer hiding in a bedroom. Officials say that Boyer was one of the individuals captured in the trail camera footage.

Boyer was taken into custody and is facing charges of burglary 2nd degree, stealing, and property damage.

MAUD STREET IN POPLAR BLUFF TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR OVERLAY

A Poplar Bluff road will be closed today for a project.

According to the Poplar Bluff Street Department, Maud Street will be closed today through 2 pm so crews can overlay the roadway.

The work zone will be located from Roxie Road to Old Street.

MAN FACING MULTIPLE CHARGES IN CONNECTION TO FIRES IN PUXICO AREA

A man is facing multiple charges in connection to fires in the Puxico area.

According to Stoddard County Sheriff Carl Hefner, on July 2nd, the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a suspicious fire near County Road 234 and County Road 267 from the previous day.

During the investigation it was discovered that a farm tractor and an electric irrigation well was burnt.

On July 5th, deputies responded to a shop fire in the same area as the tractor and irrigation fires. Deputies learned of a suspect vehicle described as a white Chevrolet truck that was later identified as belonging to 58 year old Allen Wilson of rural Puxico.

During an interview, Wilson admitted that he had set the fires. Hefner says that it is also believed Wilson has also been involved in other arsons in Bollinger County.

Wilson is being held in the Stoddard County Jail on charges of arson 2nd degree, knowingly burning or exploding, and property damage. No bond has been set on the Stoddard County charges. He is also facing a charge of knowingly burning or exploding property out of Bollinger County.

SPEEDING ENFORCEMENT CAMPAIGN UNDERWAY IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A speeding enforcement campaign is underway in Northeast Arkansas.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Arkansas Highway Safety Office are teaming up with Arkansas law enforcement to raise awareness about the dangers of speeding and urging drivers to obey speed limits.

Through July 31, Arkansas State Police Troopers, city police and sheriff’s deputies will be stopping drivers that violate Arkansas speed limit laws and will be issuing tickets as part of the Speeding Slows You Down high-visibility enforcement campaign.

In 2022, there were 12,151 fatalities in speeding-related crashes nationwide, accounting for 29 percent of total traffic fatalities. Young drivers and motorcyclists are especially susceptible to high speeds, and they represent the largest demographic involved in speeding-related vehicle crashes.

GUARDRAIL REPAIRS NEAR INTERSTATE 55 TO CAUSE DELAYS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Eastbound Route U in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction through the middle of next week as contractor crews perform guardrail repairs. 

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of roadway affected is located between the I-55 Northbound off ramp and I-55 Southbound on ramp near Caruthersville.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Tuesday, July 16.

RESIDENTS URGED TO BE CAUTIOUS OF SUSPICIOUS EMAILS FROM LOCAL GOVERNMENTAL SOURCES

Area residents are being urged to be cautious about suspicious emails from what appears to be local government officials.

Lieutenant Josh Stewart with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that the emails started going out this week saying that they contain statements from Butler County or the City of Poplar Bluff or similar nomenclature.

If you receive an email like this and are not expecting it, do not open any attachments or click on any links in the email. It could contain malware or other malicious software that could affect your computer.

Contact the office that supposedly sent the email and verify if you were supposed to be getting an email from them.

FIRE DESTROYS CLARKTON CITY HALL

The Clarkton City Hall suffered extensive damage during a fire Monday night.

According to the Dunklin County E911 Emergency Services Facebook Page, emergency services were dispatched to the fire shortly after 6:30 pm Monday evening.

The Clarkton Fire Chief says that there were no injuries from the fire. At this time, the cause of the fire is unknown and an investigation is underway, with the State Fire Marshall assisting. The building is reported to be a total loss.

The Clarkton Fire Department, Clarkton Police Department, Medic One, Malden Fire Department, and Dunklin County Sheriff Department all responded to the scene.

Fall will be here before we know it and the Missouri Department of Conservation has made information available for hunters to prepare for hunting season.

The Migratory Bird and Waterfowl Hunting Digest has detailed information on waterfowl hunting along with hunting doves and several other migratory game birds such as rail, snipe, and woodcock.

PUBLIC HEARING SCHEDULED FOR NEXT WEEK TO DISCUSS BUTLER COUNTY GRANT APPLICATION

A meeting will be held next week to discuss a submission for grant money for Butler County.

County officials will hold a public hearing at 8:45 a.m. on July 17th at the Butler County Courthouse Commissioner Chambers to discuss the County’s submission of an Competitive Cycle application for the fiscal year 2023/2024 Community Development Block Grant program.

The county is proposing the Broseley Phase Two Paving project. Officials say the area to be addressed is portions of County Road 650 and the total project cost is estimated at approximately $235,000.

The county proposes to contribute $12,500 in cash, $37,500 in-kind labor by county crews, with grant funds of $185,000 needed to make up the balance.

The Friends of Wappapello Lake will be hosting their monthly membership meeting tonight in Wappapello.

Route Z in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway is located from U.S. Route 412 to County Road 512 near Kennett.

Work is scheduled to take place today and tomorrow from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.
