PEDESTRIAN DIES AFTER BEING STRUCK BY A VEHICLE NEAR KENNETT
A Cardwell man has died after getting hit by a vehicle early Thursday morning near Kennett.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 53 year old James Zurhorst was struck by a vehicle while walking on US Highway 412.
Zurhorst was pronounced dead at the scene by Dunklin County Coroner James Powell, shortly after 1 am Thursday morning.

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE LADY RAIDERS TO HOST STATE FAIR TONIGHT FOR A SPOT IN THE NJCAA TOURNAMENT
The Three Rivers College Lady Raiders are one game away from an automatic entry into the NJCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball Tournament.
The Lady Raiders will host State Fair Community College at 6 pm tonight in the Region 16 Tournament Finals.
With a win, the Lady Raiders can start preparing for a trip to Casper, Wyoming, where the national tournament will be played this year.
If the Lady Raiders fall tonight, they could still get in through one of the eight at large selections. The National Tournament selections and seedings will be announced Sunday night.
NEW MADRID COUNTY MAN GIVEN LIFE SENTENCE ON MURDER CHARGE
A sentence was handed down this week in an Illinois murder case involving a New Madrid County man.
According to authorities, 35 year old James Merritt, of Morehouse was sentenced to life in prison for the charge of murder 2nd degree.
The charge comes from an investigation into the death of 18 year old Haley Decker, of Normal, Illinois, whose body was found in March 2020.
In addition to the murder charge, Merritt was also sentenced to 20 years for the charge of armed criminal action, four years for the charge of tampering with physical evidence, and five years for the charge of trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
ROMBAUER CEMETERY ANNUAL BOARD MEETING TO BE HELD THIS WEEKEND
The annual board meeting of the Rombauer Cemetery has been scheduled for this weekend.
The meeting will be held at 1 pm Saturday at the Rombauer Baptist Church fellowship hall. Anyone interested in maintaining the cemetery should attend the meeting.

PADDLEFISH SEASON BEGINS TODAY IN MISSOURI
Paddlefish season is beginning today for fishermen across the state of Missouri.
The season for the state’s major paddlefish waters -- Lake of the Ozarks, Harry S. Truman Reservoir, and Table Rock Lake – along with most other waters in the state runs from today through April 30th.
The season for the Mississippi River is today through May 15th with a fall season between September 15th and December 15th.
Paddlefish -- named for their large, paddle-shaped snouts -- are an ancient species that can grow to seven feet and weigh more than 100 pounds.

STATE OFFICIALS URGE DRIVERS TO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE
St. Patrick’s Day is this weekend and state officials are urging everyone to celebrate responsibly.
According to authorities, law enforcement officers are teaming up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to spread the message about the dangers of drunk driving.
According to NHTSA officials, from 2017 to 2021, a total of 272 lives were lost in drunk driving crashes during the St. Patrick’s Day period.
Drivers should also keep an eye out for pedestrians who have had too much to drink. Walking while intoxicated can also be deadly, as a lack of attention to your surroundings could put pedestrians at risk of getting hit by a vehicle.

ONE IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING STABBING IN PARMA
A woman is in stable condition following a stabbing in Southeast Missouri.
According to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department, at around 6 pm Tuesday night, deputies responded to a residence in Parma for a 911 call.
A female had been stabbed and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
The name of the victim has not been released.

HEAVY RAINFALL POSSIBLE WITH STORM SYSTEM ARRIVING TONIGHT
Heavy rainfall and a slight risk of severe weather is possible with a storm system arriving in the area tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, heavy rainfall in thunderstorms tonight and early tomorrow morning may lead to localized flash flooding for most of Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas.
There is also a slight risk of scattered severe thunderstorms with this system. The primary hazards if severe weather were to develop include quarter size hail and damaging wind gusts. There is also a possibility of isolated tornadoes.
OPENING DATES SET FOR MULTIPLE WAPPAPELLO LAKE CAMPGROUNDS
Multiple Wappapello Lake Campgrounds will be opening to the public soon.
According to the Wappapello Lake US Army Corps of Engineers, the Greenville and Redman Creek West Campgrounds will open to campers today.
The People’s Creek Lower Campground is scheduled to open on April 10th.
Officials say the Redman Creek East Campground is closed until further notice.

NEW BOOKLETS NOW AVAILABLE FOR HUNTERS IN MISSOURI
Spring is rapidly approaching and the Missouri Department of Conservation has made information available for hunters to prepare for the upcoming seasons.
Missouri hunters, trappers, and fishermen, can soon get the 2024 Spring Turkey Hunting Regulations and Information booklet, Summary of Missouri Hunting and Trapping Regulations, and Summary of Missouri Fishing Regulations at MDC regional offices, MDC nature centers, and other places where permits are sold.
Officials say the booklets have information on related permits, seasons, species, regulations, limits, conservation areas, sunrise and sunset tables, and more.

MULTI-WEEK PAVEMENT REPAIR PROJECT UNDERWAY IN RIPLEY COUNTY
Route BB in Ripley County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction for most of the rest of this month as contractor crews perform pavement repairs.
The section of roadway involved in the project is located from Route 160 to Osprey Lane near Flatwoods.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Thursday, March 28th.
SHOULDER WORK TO CAUSE DELAYS IN DUNKLIN COUNTY
Route 164 in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform shoulder work.
The work zone is located from Route Y to Route P near Rives.
Weather permitting, work will take place today and tomorrow from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

TRC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COACH ALEX WIGGS CLAIMS 100TH WIN
The Three Rivers College Lady Raiders win Tuesday night was extra special for Head Coach Alex Wiggs.
With the win over Moberly Area Community College in the 2024 Region 16 Tournament Semi-finals, Coach Wiggs claimed his 100th career victory.
Wiggs is in his fourth season as head coach and 8th season overall as a member of the TRC Women’s basketball coaching staff.

INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY AFTER PERSON FOUND DECEASED WITH AN APPARENT GUNSHOT WOUND
An investigation was started Tuesday morning after a report of an apparent fatal shooting.
According to Jason Elms with the Paragould Police Department, shortly after 8 am, Paragould Emergency Services received a call of a deceased person with an apparent gunshot wound.
The identity of the victim has not been released and Elms says that no further information can be released at this time.

TWIN RIVERS PRESCHOOL SCREENING AND KINDERGARTEN ENROLLMENT SCHEDULED FOR THIS MONTH
Officials in the Twin Rivers R-10 School District have announced they will be holding preschool screening and kindergarten enrollment this month.
Parents should bring their children, who are up to five years of age and not yet in kindergarten, for the screening which will be held March 26th and 27th at the Broseley High School.
Both events are from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.
Screening will be conducted in areas of health, vision, hearing, dental, speech, language, and development.
Each child should bring their immunization records, birth certificate, social security card, and a parent’s picture ID. Children enrolling in kindergarten must also bring three items providing proof of residency.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING CRASH IN STODDARD COUNTY
A Poplar Bluff man was taken into custody following a single vehicle crash this week in Stoddard County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 26 year old Isiah Lopez was driving on Highway 60 Monday afternoon when his vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a ditch.
Lopez suffered minor injuries in the crash and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.
Less than two hours after the incident, Lopez was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance - heroin, driving while intoxicated - drugs, and failure to drive on the right half of the roadway resulting in an accident.
PORTION OF ROUTE W TO BE CLOSED TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY
Route W in Butler County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.
The work zone is located from County Road 537 to County Road 533 near Poplar Bluff.

MALDEN AREA ROAD TO BE IMPACTED BY BRIDGE REPAIRS THIS WEEK
Route 25 in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge repairs.
The bridge involved in the project is located between Business 25 and County Road 120 near Malden.

One of the biggest names in country music is leading off four nights of entertainment at the 72nd Annual Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo.
Officials recently announced that Warren Zeiders is the headlining act for the rodeo which is scheduled for August 7th through the 10th.

TWO ARRESTED ON METH CHARGES IN MISSOURI BOOTHEEL
Two people were arrested over the weekend on drug related charges in Southeast Missouri.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 58 year old Jeffrey Musall and 43 year old Brandy Rhodes, both of Steele, were taken into custody on charges of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
Rhodes is also facing a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance - hydrocodone.
Following the arrests, both subjects were held at the Pemiscot County Jail.
RESURFACING PROJECT UNDERWAY IN STODDARD COUNTY
Route 114 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction for over two months as contractor crews resurface the roadway.
The work zone is located between Route 25 and Route 60 near Dexter.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Monday, May 20.
DRAINAGE REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS THIS WEEK IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

New Madrid County Central is celebrating its second straight state basketball championship.
The Eagles defeated Summit Christian Academy 86-65 Saturday in the boys Class 3 basketball championship game. New Madrid got to the championship game with a 57-44 win over Thayer Friday night in the state semifinals.
The Eagles have finished in the top 3 of the state for the past 3 years.

MEETING SCHEDULED TO DISCUSS PLANS FOR CORNING BYPASS
A meeting will be held this week to discuss the upcoming bypass near Corning.
The Arkansas Department of Transportation will conduct a public involvement meeting on Thursday, March 14th to present the detailed design plans for the Corning Bypass – a 4.1-mile new location roadway extending north from Highway 62/67 west of Corning and terminating north of Corning on Highway 67 in Clay County.
The bypass will be designed to interstate standards.
The in-person meeting will be held from from 4 to 7 p.m. at the M.B. Ainley Community Center in Corning.

SHOULDER REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS EARLY THIS WEEK IN STODDARD COUNTY
Route AF in Stoddard County will be reduced early this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform shoulder repairs.
The work zone is located from Route 25 to South One Mile Road in Dexter.
Crews will also be reducing Route H near Dexter for shoulder repairs. That work zone is located from County Road 667 to County Road 651.
Weather permitting, work will take place in both locations from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. both today and tomorrow.
RAMP CLOSURE SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK NEAR CHARLESTON
The northbound Interstate 57 on-ramp at Exit 12 in Charleston will be closed this week as contractor crews construct new ramps.
Weather permitting, work will take place today through Friday, March 15 from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Officials say the ramp will remain closed until the work is completed. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling near the area.

BODY FOUND IN CARTER COUNTY
A body was found Thursday in Carter County.
According to officials, the individual was found in the area of a bridge on Highway B that was closed for construction.
Carter County Coroner Joe Chapman tells KWOC News, It appears that the subject was traveling north on B Highway and moved past the road closed signs and stopped by construction equipment. The subject appeared to be walking along the bridge when he fell.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control, Carter County Coroner’s Office, and Carter County Sheriff’s Department are all involved in the investigation.
The name of the deceased has not been released pending the notification of family members.
NEW MADRID COUNTY CENTRAL TO PLAY TONIGHT IN STATE SEMIFINALS
The final four will begin tonight for a Southeast Missouri basketball team.
The New Madrid County Central Eagles will be playing Thayer tonight at 6 pm in Columbia for the Class 3 State semifinals.
A win by the Eagles will put them in the State Championship game at 8 pm on Saturday against either Montgomery County or Summit Christian Academy.

ONE IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO BUTLER COUNTY SHOOTING
A woman is in custody in connection to a shooting this week in Butler County.
According to Missouri Case Net, Lesa Alcorn, of Farmington, has been charged with murder 2nd degree and armed criminal action in connection to the fatal shooting of Matthew Wilkerson, of Dudley, on Tuesday.
Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs says that the shooting stemmed from a family dispute.
Alcorn was scheduled to appear in a Butler County Courtroom Thursday morning.
POPLAR BLUFF BASEBALL TEAM TO HOST CORNHOLE TOURNAMENT FUNDRAISER
The Poplar Bluff Mules Baseball team is hosting a cornhole tournament this weekend.
The event has been scheduled for 10 am on Saturday at the Knights of Columbus Hall on North Grand in Poplar Bluff.
Registration will cost $30 per two person team and trophies will be given out for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.
Proceeds from the tournament will go to the PBHS Mules Baseball Team.
SEARCH UNDERWAY FOR MAN ACCUSED OF ASSAULTING TWO WOMEN
Authorities in New Madrid County are searching for a suspect following an assault with two victims from earlier this week.
According to New Madrid County Sheriff Bud Cooper, on March 4th deputies were dispatched to the 300 Block of Shelly Street in Parma for an assault.
Witnesses say that Robert Waters Jr. attacked one of the victims with a liquor bottle. The second victim obtained her injuries due to trying to protect the first victim from Waters.
Waters is not in custody and has a felony warrant for two counts of domestic assault 2nd degree, armed criminal action, endangering the welfare of a child creating substantial risk, and a single count of assault 2nd degree.
Anyone with information on Waters whereabouts is asked to contact the New Madrid County Sheriff's Department at 573-748-2516.
LUCKY LEPRECHAUN 5K SET FOR THIS WEEKEND
A sea of green will be overtaking McLane Park in Poplar Bluff this weekend.
The Lucky Leprechaun 5k has been scheduled for Saturday, March 9th at McLane Park. Check-in will begin at 9:30 am, with the run starting at 10 am.
The cost to enter is $10 for this single run or $40 for the 2024 5K series.
Runners are encouraged to dress up in their finest leprechaun gear.

THE DEADLINE IS TODAY TO PURCHASE TAGS FOR BULKY ITEM PICKUP
Today is the final day for Poplar Bluff residents to purchase tags for this month’s Bulky Item Pickup.
Residents can purchase bulk item tags from the City Collector’s office at City Hall for $20. The tags entitle you to the removal of four bulk items, such as couches or refrigerators. Tires may be collected for a charge of $3 per tire with a limit of four tires.
No construction materials or small items will be picked up and the program is for residential areas only.
Today is the final day to purchase item tags at City Hall to be included in next week’s pick up, which will be conducted on Tuesday, March 12th.

MULES CAFE TO OPEN FOR FINAL TIME AT ITS HOME FOR THE LAST 45 YEARS
Poplar Bluff students will be opening the original location of the Mules Café this week for the final time.
The Mules Café, located in the R-1 Administrative Building on North Westwood Boulevard, is open to the public from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. both today and tomorrow.
This will be the end of the Café’s approximately 45 year run in its current location.

MEETING TO BE HELD TO DISCUSS DONIPHAN SCHOOL DISTRICT 85 CENT TAX LEVY PROPOSAL
A meeting will be held today to discuss a Doniphan R-1 School District tax levy proposal.
Proposition Teach will be on the ballot during the April 2nd general Municipal Election Day. The proposition would authorize the Doniphan Board of Education to increase the operating tax levy by 85 cents per one hundred dollars of assessed valuation.
The ballot language says that the increase is for the purposes of attracting and retaining quality certified and support staff, maintaining facilities, and meeting additional operating expenses.
School officials say that two community meetings will be held to discuss the tax levy. The meetings are scheduled for 6:30 pm today and on March 18th at the Doniphan Elementary Cafeteria.
ONE DEAD FOLLOWING PEMISCOT COUNTY SHOOTING
One man has been reported dead following a shooting in Pemiscot County.
According to authorities, an investigation is underway after 24 year old Myreon Carter, of Caruthersville was found with an apparent gunshot wound Monday night. He was later pronounced dead at an area hospital.
Anyone who has information in connection to the incident is asked to contact the Caruthersville Police Department at 573-333-2121.

An employee of a Wayne County boarding school is accused of bloodying a boy's face while boxing — the third person associated with the same school to be charged this month.
22 year old Caleb Sandoval was charged Monday with abuse or neglect of a child. His initial court appearance is scheduled for today.
A probable cause statement said Sandoval is a teacher at ABM Ministries in Piedmont, which operates as Lighthouse Christian Academy.
ABM Ministries owners 57 year old Larry Musgraves Jr., and his wife, 64 year old Carmen Musgraves, were charged over the weekend with first-degree kidnapping for allegedly locking a student in a small room.
The probable cause statement against Sandoval said a 15-year-old student suffered a bloody nose while boxing with him.
Sandoval initially told investigators he was teaching the boy to box in preparation for a Mixed Martial Arts camp. But he later said the sparring took place about a week after the boy made sexual comments about Sandoval and his wife, according to the probable cause statement.
MULTIPLE AREA SCHOOLS CHOSEN FOR PROJECT PROM AND GRADUATION GRANTS
Multiple area schools have been chosen to receive grant money to help keep kids safe this spring.
The Southeast Coalition for Roadway Safety has awarded grant funding for project prom and graduation events at 39 schools across Southeast Missouri. Schools were awarded $200 for the student lock-in events.
Grant winners include Poplar Bluff, Bloomfield, Campbell, Dexter, Doniphan, East Carter, Malden, Naylor, and Twin Rivers High Schools.
SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENTS TO CAUSE DELAYS THIS MONTH IN PUXICO
Route 51 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction this month as contractor crews improve sidewalks in Puxico.
The section of roadway being reduced is located between Schumacher Avenue and Industrial Drive.
The project is part of the Missouri Department of Transportation’s initiative to bring roadway facilities into compliance with the current standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Sunday, March 31st.

After an 8 month investigation, the remains were identified as Amiee Rose Ross, who had been reported missing from Poplar Bluff in May of 2023.

AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING FATAL SHOOTING IN BUTLER COUNTY
Authorities in Butler County are investigating a fatal shooting from Tuesday evening.
Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News that the shooting occurred at approximately 5:30 pm at a residence in the 600 block of Butler County Road 544.
Dobbs says that one person is dead from the shooting that apparently stemmed from a family dispute. The person deceased has been identified as 45 year old Matthew Wilkerson, of Dudley.
Butler County Coroner Jim Akers says that an autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday morning.
The shooter has been identified and is being interviewed as a part of the ongoing investigation.
No further details have been released.
MISSOURI ANNUAL TORNADO DRILL TO BE HELD TODAY
Missouri’s Annual Statewide Tornado Drill is set for today.
The drill is scheduled for 11 am and officials say that residents should treat the drill as if it were an actual Tornado Warning.
The purpose of the drill is to test everyone's readiness for life-threatening severe weather events such as tornadoes, flash floods, and damaging winds.
Officials say that it is important to have a tornado safety plan in place before a tornado strikes. Knowing what to do before a tornado occurs is essential to protect lives.

NEELYVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT ANNOUNCES TEACHERS OF THE YEAR
The Neelyville School District is honoring four teachers for the effect they have had on their students over the past school year.
Crystal Gillespie was named the teacher of the year for 2023-2024 at Hillview Elementary School. At Neelyville Elementary, Amy Hays is the Teacher of the Year. Billie Foust was chosen for the honor from Neelyville Junior High.
The teacher of the year for Neelyville High School is Lisa French.
In a post on social media, school officials thanked the teachers for their dedication and commitment to students.
ARKANSAS CHOOSES PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN AND DONALD TRUMP TO FACE OFF THIS NOVEMBER
President Joe Biden and his predecessor Donald Trump continue on their crash course for this November.
Both won easily yesterday during the Arkansas Primary, with President Biden projected to win all 31 Democratic delegates and Trump projected to take most of the 40 Republican delegates.
Two spots on the Arkansas State Supreme Court were also voted on yesterday.
Justices Karen Baker, Barbara Webb and Rhonda Wood were leading the four-candidate race for chief justice on Tuesday in an election that remained too close to call. Former state legislator Jay Martin was also running for the chief justice post.
Justice Courtney Hudson was reelected in another race, and her victory handed Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders a new appointment to the court.
Hudson defeated Circuit Judge Carlton Jones in the race for position two on the court. The two were running to replace Justice Cody Hiland, who Sanders appointed last year.
VINTAGE POSTCARD FROM POPLAR BLUFF FOUND IN CALIFORNIA
A vintage postcard showing a picture of the old Poplar Bluff High School was recently found in California.
According to school officials, A 95-year-old man from California mailed the district a postcard of a historic Poplar Bluff school building as part of his longstanding pastime to preserve history.
The circa-1920 postcard was purchased from a West Coast antique store, and depicts an image of the former High School building on Vine Street, where Southern Bank’s parking lot is presently located.
Poplar Bluff R-1 Superintendent Aaron Cornman mailed back a refund for the postcard as well as a little extra for postage, an assortment of Mules apparel and tourism materials from the region.
Additionally, to help the sender, Lowell Joerg, keep his mission going, Cornman included with the care package a selection of vintage postcards from the early 1900s, some sent to Poplar Bluff residents, as well as a mid-century print engraved on a copperplate.
Cornman intends to create a display in the Administrative Building for the rendering of the former High School, along with the thoughtful letter. The Vine Street building was constructed east of the original Central High School in 1914, and served as the district’s secondary campus until 1958, when the High School moved to where Junior High is currently located on Westwood Boulevard, according to district records.

Voters in Arkansas will be heading to the polls today in the Arkansas Primary.
In addition to the nominations for President and the US House of Representatives, voters could also decide who will be sitting on the Arkansas Supreme Court.

ONE INJURED IN CRASH OUTSIDE OF POPLAR BLUFF
An Arkansas man was injured in a motorcycle crash Sunday afternoon outside of Poplar Bluff.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 43 year old Michael Morris, of Hoxie, was driving on Highway T in Butler County when the motorcycle overturned.
Morris suffered serious injuries in the crash and was flown to a Memphis hospital.
PIGGOTT WOMAN KILLED IN CLAY COUNTY CRASH
A Piggott woman has died from injuries she received in a recent crash.
According to the Arkansas State Police, the crash occurred when a vehicle driven by 44 year old Terri Morris, of Piggott, failed to yield at an intersection in Rector and was struck by another vehicle.
Officials say that Morris was killed in the wreck. The driver of the second vehicle was injured and transported to a Piggott hospital.
HUNTERS AND ANGLERS REMINDED THAT ANNUAL PERMITS EXPIRED AT THE END OF FEBRUARY
Missouri annual permits for various game and fish expired at the end of last month.
The Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding Missouri hunters and anglers that related annual permits expired at the end of February, including 2023 permits for small game, fishing, trout fishing, and combination hunting and fishing.
Anyone wanting to purchase a permit can do so at vendors around the state, online at mdc.mo.gov/BuyPermits, or through MDC’s free mobile apps, MO Hunting and MO fishing.

CARTER COUNTY ROAD CLOSED FOR BRIDGE REPLACEMENT
A Carter County road will be closed for multiple months so contractor crews can replace the bridge over Tenmile Creek
Route B in Carter County is being closed between U.S. Route 60 and Route K near Ellsinore.
Work is underway with completion anticipated by Thursday, July 4th, weather permitting. Motorists in the area should seek alternate routes.

Eastbound Route 60 in Carter County will be reduced to one lane with an 18-foot width restriction for part of this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform drainage repairs.
The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route J to County Road 143 near Van Buren.

DONALD TRUMP WINS MISSOURI REPUBLICAN CAUCUS
Donald Trump continued his path towards the Republican presidential nomination with a win in Missouri on Saturday.
Trump won the Missouri Republican Caucus easily, carrying most counties in the state.
In Southeast Missouri, Trump was by far the favorite of caucus goers, carrying every county in the area.
DONALD TRUMP WINS MISSOURI REPUBLICAN CAUCUS
Donald Trump continued his path towards the Republican presidential nomination with a win in Missouri on Saturday.
Trump won the Missouri Republican Caucus easily, winning all 51 delegates in the state.
With the Idaho Caucus and Michigan Convention, Trump earned every delegate at stake on Saturday, bringing his count to 244 compared to 24 for former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley.
A candidate needs to secure 1,215 delegates to clinch the Republican nomination.
NEW MADRID COUNTY CENTRAL ADVANCES TO STATE SEMIFINALS
Two Southeast Missouri basketball teams will be playing this week in the Missouri state boys final four.
In Class 3, the New Madrid County Central Eagles defeated Kingston 70-38 on Saturday to advance to the state semifinals.
They will face Thayer on Friday at 6 pm.
In Class 2 South Pemiscot beat Puxico on Saturday 50-48 in the State Quarterfinals. The Bulldogs will challenge Hartville at 2 pm on Wednesday.
$12,000 RAISED FOR UNITED GOSPEL RESCUE MISSION DURING CHILI COOK OFF
Over $10,000 was raised for the United Gospel Rescue Mission during the 18th annual Mason-Dixon Chili Society’s Chili Cook-Off.
The event was held on Saturday, February 24th at the Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff.
Greg Kirk with the Rescue Mission says that 19 teams raised $12,000 for the center.

TWO ARRESTED ON KIDNAPPING CHARGES IN WAYNE COUNTY
Two people have been arrested in Wayne County on kidnapping charges.
Wayne County Sheriff Dean Finch tells KWOC News that arrest warrants were served on Friday at ABM Ministries in Piedmont.
57 year old Larry Musgraves Jr. and 64 year old Carmen Musgraves were taken into custody on charges of 1st degree kidnapping and held in the Wayne County Jail on no bond.
Finch says that his department started an investigation several months ago after several calls were made of runaways. The investigation is ongoing and Finch anticipates more charges will be made.
STODDARD COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED THIS WEEK FOR CULVERT REPLACEMENT
Route AC in Stoddard County will be closed for the early part of this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.
The section of roadway being closed is located in the area of County Road 227 near Bloomfield.
Weather permitting, work will take place both today and tomorrow, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.
SHOULDER WORK SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN WAYNE COUNTY
Route 49 in Wayne County will be reduced to one lane today as contractor crews perform roadside work.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the work zone is located in the County Road 440 area near Mill Spring.

TWO IN CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO CHILD’S DEATH
Two people are in custody in connection to a child’s death in the Missouri Bootheel.
Dunkin County Sheriff Bob Holder tells KWOC News that on January 4th, deputies were dispatched to a residence in Gibson in reference to a six month old child not breathing.
Medical personnel at the scene informed the deputies that the child was deceased. During an investigation into the death a toxicology report showed that the child had tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

Stark is being held in the Dunklin County Justice Center. Hill was arrested on Wednesday in Clay County and is awaiting extradition.
No bond has been set for either subject.

Missouri Republicans will be coming together in each County this weekend to help select the party’s nominee for President of the United States.
Butler County Republican Committee Chairman Joe Leahy tells KWOC News that the Missouri GOP Caucus will be held at 10 am on March 2nd.
In Butler County, the event will be located at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center on the campus of Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff.
Lehay says that the facility was chosen to better host every caucus participant in Butler County.
Eligible candidates for nomination during the caucus are Donald Trump, Nikki Haley, David Stuckenberg, and Ryan Binkley.
Missouri GOP officials say that the party is utilizing County Caucuses for this election cycle due to the state legislature not reinstating the Presidential Preference Primary.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN SENTENCED TO A DECADE BEHIND BARS
A Poplar Bluff man will spend a decade in federal prison on gun and drug related charges.
Officials with the United States Attorney's Office tell KWOC News that 27 year old Samuel D. Moore has been sentenced to serve 10 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to drug-trafficking and firearm related charges.
Last July, officers were dispatched to Moore’s residence in
Poplar Bluff in response to a reported domestic assault. Officers obtained a search warrant for the premises after observing multiple firearms and drug paraphernalia items inside the residence.
During the search, officers found a box containing 30 pounds of marijuana divided into one-pound bags along with a 9mm semi-automatic pistol with an attached 50-round high-capacity drum magazine.
Moore admitted that he intended to sell the marijuana for profit and that he possessed the firearm in furtherance of his drug-trafficking activities.
After serving the 10-year sentence, Moore will be placed on supervised release for three years.

Two people are dead following a multi vehicle crash near Cardwell.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred Monday night on US Highway 412 when a vehicle driven by 68 year old Janice Orr, of Jonesboro, traveled into the path of another vehicle.
Orr was pronounced dead at the scene by Dunklin County Coroner James Towell.
A passenger in the second vehicle, 23 year old Harley Jones, of Steele, was transported to a Paragould hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

POPLAR BLUFF TECHNICAL CAREER CENTER RECEIVES $27,000 AWARD FOR ROBOTIC ARM
The Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center is using grant money to help address the unmet skill training and hiring needs of the region.
According to School Officials, the TCC incorporated a six-axis robotic arm into its computer integrated manufacturing class with a $27,000 Delta Workforce grant awarded at the end of last school year.
The TCC received the robotic arm along with related curriculum and programming materials last month and set up the industrial workstation simulation over the ensuing weeks.
The collaborative grant agreement was initiated by school officials almost one year ago, with oversight provided by the Ozark Foothills Regional Planning Commission.
KENNETT MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG TRAFFICKING CHARGE
A Kennett man has been taken into custody on a drug charge.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 38 year old Ronald Johnson was arrested Monday night on charges of trafficking drugs first degree and speeding.
Following the arrest, Johnson was held in Pemiscot County according to the arrest report.

A Poplar Bluff man is facing up to five years in prison in connection to a 2022 fire.
According to the United States Attorney’s office, 44 year old Adam Gambling pleaded guilty on Tuesday to one felony count of setting fires on public land.
Gambling admitted to setting a series of fires on November 8th, 2022, near Beaver Lake in the Mark Twain National Forest. Those fires burned a total of 220.68 acres, of which 95.3 acres were privately owned.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 24th.
The charge carries a penalty of up to five years in prison, a $250,000 fine or both. Gambling also agreed to pay over $66,000 in restitution to the U.S. Forest Service for the cost of fighting the fires.
RECORD TEMPERATURE SET THIS WEEK IN VAN BUREN
Tuesday was a historic day for weather watchers in Southeast Missouri.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, preliminary data shows that Van Buren reached 90 degrees on Tuesday, breaking the record for the warmest February temperature on record in the NWS Paducah 58 county forecast area.
The previous record for February was 88 degrees, which was set in Doniphan on February 13, 1962.
TWO ARRESTED ON METH CHARGES IN BUTLER COUNTY
Two people have been taken into custody on meth charges in Butler County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 57 year old Jill Jones and 52 year old Deloris Carter, both of Poplar Bluff, were arrested Tuesday afternoon on charges of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
Following the arrests, both were transported to the Butler County jail. It was not released if the two arrests were connected to each other.
PAVEMENT REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR THE REMAINDER OF THIS WEEK IN BUTLER COUNTY
Eastbound U.S. Route 60 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane for the rest of this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.
The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route DD to Route T near Poplar Bluff.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. both today and tomorrow.
OVERPASS CONSTRUCTION TO FORCE TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF WESTBOUND US 60
Westbound Route 60 traffic in New Madrid County will utilize detours overnight tonight as construction of the Ingram overpass in Sikeston continues.
Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation tell KWOC News that several overnight closures of westbound Route 60 will be necessary as contractor crews set the bridge girders.
The overpass is located between Interstate 55 and Route 61 near Sikeston.
Weather permitting, night work will take place from 7 p.m. tonight to 6 a.m. tomorrow morning. Signs and message boards will be in place to direct traffic. Eastbound traffic will not be impacted.

MISSOURI REPUBLICANS TO HOLD CAUCUS THIS WEEKEND
Missouri Republicans will be coming together in each County this weekend to help select the party’s nominee for President of the United States.

APPLICATIONS FOR SPRING MANAGED TURKEY HUNTS AVAILABLE IN MISSOURI
Missouri conservation officials say that applications are available now for spring managed turkey hunts.
According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, Missouri hunters can apply online for the managed hunts this month through the MDC website at mdc.mo.gov/SpringTurkeyHunts.
Managed hunt details and application procedures are outlined on that webpage. Drawing results will be posted starting March 15th.
Spring turkey hunting youth weekend will be April 6th and 7th with the regular spring season running April 15th through May 5th.

AREA YOUTH BANDS INVITED TO ROCK THE HEARTLAND THIS SPRING
Area youth bands are being invited to sign up for a big event coming this Spring in Wayne County.
Rock the Heartland will be a music competition that will be held on May 4th in Greenville.
Greenville High School Music Director Kristen Englehart tells KWOC News that all music genres will be welcome at the competition for the chance to compete for the grand prize of $500.
There will be a $20 entry fee and the deadline to sign up is Thursday, February 29th. Students can also enter for feedback from the judges and not to compete.
Any extra proceeds from the event will go to the Greenville Music Department and the town of Greenville.

CULVERT REPLACEMENTS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN THE DONIPHAN AREA
Route BB in Ripley County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace several culverts under the roadway.
The work zone is located from Route 160 to Jaxon Lane near Doniphan.
Weather permitting, work will take place today from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m and during the project the roadway will be open to local traffic only.
INTERSTATE REPAIRS TO BE CONDUCTED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
Interstate 55 in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane with a 13-foot width restriction for over two months so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform pavement repairs.
The section of Interstate 55 being reduced is located between mile markers 27 and 50 near New Madrid.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Friday, May 3rd.

BLOOMFIELD MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER IN WOMAN’S DEATH
A Bloomfield man is facing a murder charge in connection to the death of a woman in Stoddard County.
According to Stoddard County Coroner Brent Stidham, on November 13th, Stoddard County 911 received an emergency call regarding an unresponsive female.
At the scene, deputies found 83 year old Nadine Teeters deceased.
Further investigation was conducted by the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Office and Missouri State Highway Patrol which resulted in the arrest of 59 year old Jerry Teeters, of Bloomfield.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH NEAR BERNIE
A Campbell man has died from injuries he received in a weekend crash in Stoddard County.
Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 73 year old Christopher Lenko was driving on Highway 25 on Saturday when his vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway and struck a ditch.
Lenko was transported to a Dexter hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
MULTIPLE AREA BASKETBALL TEAMS CELEBRATING DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS
It was the District Championship weekend this past weekend for Classes 1, 2, and 3 in Southeast Missouri.
In Class 1, the Clarkton, Richland, and South Iron Boys Basketball teams won their district championships in District 1, 2, and 3, respectively.
In Class 2, South Pemiscot won the boys championship for District 1, while Puxico took home the District 3 title. For the girls, Portageville won District 1 while Neelyville are the champions of District 2.
Moving to Class 3, New Madrid County Central are the district champions for District 1 and Charleston won the title in District 2.
In the Girls Class 3, District 1, the Twin Rivers Lady Royals are bringing home their third district championship in the last four seasons.
The State Sectionals will be held tonight for the Girls beginning at 6 pm as Portageville takes on Neelyville and Twin Rivers battles Saxony-Lutheran.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH
One man was injured in a single vehicle crash Friday night.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 44 year old Theodore Liszewski, of Poplar Bluff, was driving on Route W when his vehicle ran off the roadway and struck a tree.
The driver suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

TEN DIGIT DIALING COMING TO SOUTHEAST MISSOURI THIS WEEKEND
Phone users in Southeast Missouri will have to start using the area code when making local phone calls beginning this weekend.
According to the Missouri Public Service Commission, phone numbers with the 235 area code may be assigned to the same area that is currently covered by the 573 area code beginning on March 24th.
Officials say that an overlay plan introduces a new area code within the entire area code, so that multiple area codes are assigned to the same area. An overlay plan does not require any customers to change telephone numbers, but it does require ten-digit dialing on all local calls.
Beginning on Saturday, all local calls made within the 573 area code must be placed using ten digits. Calls placed using just seven digits will not be completed.
The 573 area code serves multiple communities in Eastern and Central Missouri, including Poplar Bluff, Sikeston, Caruthersville, Cape Girardeau, Jefferson City, and Rolla.

Southbound Interstate 155 in Pemiscot County will have reduced shoulders today while contractor crews install new signage on the right of way.

MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN PEMISCOT COUNTY CRASH
One man was seriously injured in a single vehicle crash Thursday morning in Pemiscot County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 49 year old Jerry Hillburn, of Carutherville, was driving on Missouri Highway 84 when his vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway and struck railroad crossing stop arms.
Hillburn suffered serious injuries and was transported to a Hayti hospital.
RODEO RETURNS TO BLACK RIVER COLISEUM NEXT FRIDAY
Rodeo action is returning next week in Poplar Bluff.
The Countryside Chevrolet Championship Rodeo will start at 7 pm, next Friday and Saturday night at Black River Coliseum.

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN ARRESTED ON METH CHARGE
A Poplar Bluff woman was taken into custody on a felony drug charge.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 40 year old Jessica Bolin was arrested on Tuesday on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine.
Bolin is also facing charges of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, no insurance, and no seat belt.
Following the arrest, she was held at the Butler County Sheriff’s Department.

A marathon run is coming this spring to the Poplar Bluff area.
The Poplar Bluff Kiwanis Club and US Forest Service will host the 11th Annual Wolf Creek Trail Run on Saturday, April 6th. The Half Marathon will begin at 8 am, while the 6K run and 1.7 mile walk will start at 9:30 am.
Proceeds from the event will go to Kiwanis Bacon Memorial Park.

Doniphan FFA is hosting an event this month to show their appreciation for the community that supports their FFA Chapter.
