MISSOURI STATE OFFICIALS ARE WARNING RESIDENTS TO WATCH FOR WINTER WEATHER SCAMS

Missouri state officials are warning state residents to be on the lookout for potential winter weather scams.

Missouri Attorney General Andrw Bailey says that whether its snow, ice or wind, scammers will use the weather conditions to take advantage of you.

Bailey says that a common scam is utility scams. Utility imposters work year-round, but after a storm, they might call or knock on your door saying they need to repair or replace equipment. Then they’ll ask you to pay before the work is completed. Don’t pay them. That is likely a scam.

If someone says they’re from the local utility company, call the utility company and ask for verification. The same goes for anyone who claims they’re a government official or who throws around official-sounding assistance – contact the agency in charge of whatever program you’re being offered and ask for their assistance.

Another common scam is contractor scams. Before you sign on any dotted line or pay anyone anything, make sure that “contractor” is real. Ask if they are licensed and insured and check their paperwork. Contact the BBB and the Attorney General hotline at 800-392-8222 to check on complaints. Ask for referrals and unless you know them, avoid paying in cash. Make sure all work is performed before paying.

TROUT HARVEST TO BEGIN ON FEBRUARY 1ST IN FOUR SOUTHEAST MISSOURI LAKES

Trout can be harvested in four specific Southeast Missouri bodies of water beginning next month.

The Missouri Department of Conservation says that trout may be harvested from the Recreation Complex Pond in Sikeston along with lakes in Jackson, Farmington, and Perryville, beginning February 1st.

Starting then, any bait may be used, and four trout may be kept regardless of size. All anglers between the ages of 16 and 64 must have a valid Missouri fishing permit, and any angler harvesting trout must also possess a trout permit.

The MDC stocked trout in November at the start of the catch-and-release season. Anglers are reminded they must release trout caught now through January 31st.

More information is available at mdc.mo.gov/fishing.

WATCH FOR BLACK ICE DURING YOUR COMMUTE

Temperatures warmed up a bit on Wednesday, which might result in black ice having formed overnight from melted snow.

MoDOT officials say that bridges and elevated surfaces are the first to ice over and should always be approached with caution, but even roads that might look clear can hide slippery conditions.

Drivers should reduce speeds and anticipate slick road conditions both where you are and where you are going.

You can also check current Missouri road conditions on the Traveler Information Map at modot.org, or through MoDOT’s smartphone app, available for iPhone and Android phones.

WARMING CENTERS REMAIN OPEN WHILE BELOW ZERO WIND CHILLS GRIP THE AREA

RESIDENTS URGED TO KEEP PETS SAFE DURING COLD WEATHER

Area residents are being urged to keep their pets safe during our current cold spell.

While walking your dog, owners should never let their dogs off the leash on snow or ice, as dogs can easily become lost. Make sure your dog always wears ID tags.

Also remember to thoroughly wipe off your dog's legs and stomach when they come in after being on sleet, snow or ice. The dog can ingest salt, antifreeze or other potentially dangerous chemicals while licking his paws, and his paw pads may also bleed from snow or encrusted ice.

Outdoor cats sometimes sleep under the hoods of cars during the winter as well. When the motor is started, the cat can be injured or killed by the fan belt. If there are outdoor cats in your area, bang loudly on the car hood before starting the engine to give the cat a chance to escape.

Make sure your companion animal has a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from all drafts.

Cold Weather Tips for Pets:

The following guidelines will help you protect your companion animals when the mercury dips.

1. Keep your cat inside. Outdoors, felines can freeze, become lost or be stolen, injured or killed. Cats who are allowed to stray are exposed to infectious diseases, including rabies, from other cats, dogs, and wildlife.

2. During the winter, outdoor cats sometimes sleep under the hoods of cars. When the motor is started, the cat can be injured or killed by the fan belt. If there are outdoor cats in your area, bang loudly on the car hood before starting the engine to give the cat a chance to escape.

3. Never let your dog off the leash on snow or ice, especially during a snowstorm, dogs can easily become lost. Make sure your dog always wears ID tags.

4. Thoroughly wipe off your dog's legs and stomach when he comes in out of the sleet, snow or ice. He can ingest salt, antifreeze or other potentially dangerous chemicals while licking his paws, and his paw pads may also bleed from snow or encrusted ice.

5. Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth. When you bathe your dog in the colder months, be sure to completely dry him before taking him out for a walk. Own a short-haired breed? Consider getting him a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage from the base of the tail to the belly. For many dogs, this is regulation winter wear.

6. Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.

7. Puppies do not tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs and may be difficult to housebreak during the winter. If your puppy appears to be sensitive to the weather, you may opt to paper-train him inside. If your dog is sensitive to the cold due to age, illness or breed type, take them outdoors only to potty.

8. Does your dog spend a lot of time engaged in outdoor activities? Increase his supply of food, particularly protein, to keep him, and his fur, in tip-top shape.

9. Like coolant, antifreeze is a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol. Visit the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center more information.

10. Make sure your companion animal has a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from all drafts. A cozy dog or cat bed with a warm blanket or pillow is perfect.

INVESTIGATION STARTED AFTER GROUP ATTEMPTS CHILD PREDATOR STING OPERATION ON AREA SCHOOL PROPERTY

An investigation is underway after an organization attempted to conduct a child predator sting operation on an area school property.

According to Bernie R-13 Superintendent Brad Botsch, on Saturday night an organization called "Bikers Against Predators" conducted an operation on Bernie school property where an over 50 year old Dexter man came down to allegedly meet a 13 year old girl.

Botsch says that neither the school district nor Bernie Police Department had knowledge that the operation was going to take place.

The Bernie Police Department was called by the organization to report property damage to a guide wire that the man ran into with his truck when he abruptly left after they confronted him. They also then notified the Bernie officer on duty about the video regarding the child solicitation.

Botsch added that no Bernie student was involved and there was no victim as the organization apparently uses a decoy of some kind in their operation.

The Bernie and Dexter Police Departments are working with the Bernie School District to investigate the situation.

Officials say that you should try to stay indoors during extremely cold weather and any trips that you do make outside should be as brief as possible.

If you do go outside, you should try to wear several layers of loose-fitting clothing, a hat, a scarf or knit mask to cover face and mouth, sleeves that are snug at the wrist, and mittens or gloves.

Also do your best to stay dry, as wet clothing chills the body quickly.

Make sure to watch for hypothermia as well. In adults, warning signs of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion or feeling very tired, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech, and drowsiness. In babies, signs include bright red, cold skin, and very low energy.

STEPS YOU SHOULD TAKE TO PREPARE FOR UPCOMING FREEZING TEMPERATURES

A big temperature drop is coming this weekend, with possible wind chills of below zero forecast, and there are multiple steps you can take today to make sure that you and your family are prepared.

According to the American Red Cross, families should have an emergency preparedness kit with basic supplies ready, just in case the worst happens and a winter storm knocks out power to your home.

The supplies should include one gallon of water per person per day, non-perishable and easy to prepare food, a flashlight, medications, a first aid kit, and copies of personal documents, among other items.

You could also take steps to prepare your home, including caulking and weather-striping doors and windowsills to keep cold air out.

When the cold air arrives, don’t forget about your water pipes. Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around your plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.

When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.

More safety information is available at redcross.org.
