LINEUP ANNOUNCED FOR 2023 POPLAR BLUFF SHOWDOWN

The eight teams who will be playing in the 2023 Poplar Bluff Showdown have been released.

Poplar Bluff Athletics Director Kent Keith tells KWOC News that the field will include teams from five different states.

Poplar Bluff will be joined by New Madrid County Central and Christian Brothers from Missouri, Vilonia from Arkansas, McCracken County from Kentucky, and Urbana from Illinois along with Memphis East and Germantown from Tennessee.

FALL FIREARMS TURKEY SEASON TO BEGIN THIS WEEKEND IN MISSOURI

The fall firearms turkey season will begin this weekend in Missouri.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, the season will run from October 1st through October 31st. The hours for hunting will be from one-half hour before sunrise to sunset each day.

Hunters may take two turkeys of either sex during the season and there are restrictions on the type of firearms that may be used.

MULES CAFE TO OPEN TODAY FOR NEW SCHOOL YEAR

Poplar Bluff students will be making lunch for customers beginning today.

The Mules Café, located in the R-1 Administrative Building on North Westwood Boulevard, is open to the public from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday and Friday each week, unless school is out.

This year will be a little different as the culinary arts class is anticipating a midyear move from the Administrative Building to the Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center campus in the state-of-the-art Culinary Arts Center, which is about midway through construction.

THREE SOUTHEAST MISSOURI LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS TO RECEIVE MISSOURI MEDAL OF VALOR THIS WEEK

Three Southeast Missouri law enforcement officers will be honored with Missouri Public Safety medals during a ceremony this week.

State Troopers Adam Shipley and Joshua Schuenemeyer, along with Captain Barry Morgan, of the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office, will be awarded with the Medal of Valor for exceptional courage and heroism in an attempt to protect or save human life.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE INVESTIGATING CONFRONTATION THAT INCLUDED GUNSHOTS BEING FIRED

Authorities in Poplar Bluff are investigating a confrontation from over the weekend that included shots being fired.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, shortly after 2 pm on Sunday, officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 1100 block of West Maud Street.

At the scene officers found spent shell casings in the roadway.

Officials say that surveillance video from a nearby residence captured a red passenger car stopping and two male subjects on foot approaching the car.

WOMAN SHOT WITH A FLARE GUN IN POPLAR BLUFF, ONE IN CUSTODY

A subject is in custody after a woman was reportedly shot with a flare gun in Poplar Bluff.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, at around 8:30 pm Thursday night, officers responded to the 800 block of West Maud Street following a report of the incident.

The victim was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital and then flown to a St. Louis hospital for treatment.

MOUNTAIN LION SPOTTED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A mountain lion was spotted last week in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, they were notified on September 12th that an adult elk had been killed in Shannon County.

Members of MDC’s Large Carnivore Response Team traveled to the area and confirmed that a mountain lion caused the death through careful inspection of the scene.

CHILD FLOWN FROM THE SCENE AFTER BEING STRUCK BY A VEHICLE IN CARTER COUNTY

A child was injured in an incident Tuesday in Carter County.

According to the Ellsinore Police Chief Kelly Hampton, the Ellsinore Police Department received a report at approximately 12:45 pm Tuesday of a child being possibly struck by a vehicle.

Officers responded to the area and a juvenile was flown from the scene to an area hospital.

Hampton says that no further details are being released as an investigation is ongoing

TRC RODEO TEAM MEMBER FLOWN TO ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL AFTER BEING INJURED WHILE EXERCISING WITH A HORSE

A Three Rivers College Rodeo Team member was flown to a St. Louis hospital on Saturday following a training accident.

According to the Rodeo Team’s facebook page, Freshman Annika Olson, from Red Bud, Illinois, was exercising with her horse at the team ranch on Saturday when the accident occurred.

TRAIN DERAILS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI, NO INJURIES REPORTED

A train derailed early Friday morning in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Scott City Fire Department, the derailment occurred before 1:40 am on Highway P in Scott County between County Roads 277 and 266.

18 cars were fully derailed in the incident, however officials say that all of the hazardous material cars were still safe and secured on the tracks.

ARCHERY DEER SEASON BEGINS TODAY IN MISSOURI

The Archery portion of deer season begins today in Missouri and the Missouri Department of Conservation is encouraging hunters to be safe.

The initial archery season will run through November 10th and hunters are reminded that only one antlered deer may be taken before November 11th and only two antlered deer may be taken during the archery and firearms deer hunting seasons combined.

During archery season, hunters can use longbows, compound bows, and recurve bows of any draw weight, crossbows, and hand-held string-releasing devices, among other devices.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING MOTORCYCLE WRECK IN DOWNTOWN POPLAR BLUFF

One person has died following a motorcycle crash in downtown Poplar Bluff.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Broadway and Pine Street shortly after 5 pm Wednesday evening.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol say that a truck pulled into the path of a motorcycle that was being driven by 36 year old Joseph Coble, of Greenville. Coble was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital where he was pronounced dead.

VEHICLE STRIKES MARQUEE AT RODGERS THEATRE, CITY WORKING ON IMPROVEMENTS AT THE INTERSECTION

The marquee at Rodgers Theatre in downtown Poplar Bluff has been struck by a vehicle again.

The latest incident occurred Tuesday morning when a truck damaged the marquee, located at the intersection of Pine Street and Broadway.

Poplar Bluff City Manager Matt Winters tells KWOC News that the city, working with Smith and Co. engineers, has submitted a request to the Missouri Department of Transportation for improvements at the intersection.

HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A homicide investigation is underway in Southeast Missouri.

Officials with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tell KWOC News that officers were dispatched to a residence on Washington Street Monday morning for a report of an assault where one subject was suspected to be injured.

The victim was transported to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.

US MARSHALL’S OFFICE ASSISTS IN ARREST OF MAN WHO FLED FROM DEXTER TRAFFIC STOP

A man who fled from a traffic stop in Dexter last month has been taken into custody.

Dexter Police Chief Hank Trout tells KWOC News that 28 year Chris Smith, of Poplar Bluff, fled from a traffic stop on August 12th near the area of Houston and Whitman street. Smith had an active warrant for his arrest and was not able to be located at the time.

Trout says that the US Marshall’s Office has been working with the Dexter Police Department and Marshalls were able to apprehend Smith on September 5th in Springfield.

A free medical clinic will be offered in Poplar Bluff this weekend.

Footsteps Medical Missions will be presenting the clinic from 8 am to 3 pm on Saturday at the Black River Coliseum.

Services provided will include medical services, diabetic foot care, hair care, wound care, cardiology, and more.

WOMAN REPORTED MISSING EARLIER THIS WEEK TAKEN INTO CUSTODY

A woman who was reported missing earlier this week in Poplar Bluff is now in custody.

Lieutenant Josh Stewart with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that 49 year old Debra Wright of Poplar Bluff, was reported missing on Monday and crews worked Monday and Tuesday searching in the area of the Sportsman Park Conservation Access on Black River in an attempt to find her.

Tuesday evening Wright contacted authorities through a third party saying she was alive and well.

WOMAN REPORTED MISSING IN POPLAR BLUFF FOUND

A woman who was reported missing on Monday in Poplar Bluff has been found.

Lieutenant Josh Stewart with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that 49 year old Debra Wright of Poplar Bluff, is safe and no longer considered missing.

The Police Department received several tips Tuesday afternoon indicating Debra Wright may be alive. While they do not know for certain why Wright did not come forward immediately, authorities say she had an active warrant for a parole violation.

PATRIOT DAY REMEMBRANCE EVENT TO BE HELD IN POPLAR BLUFF

Area community members will be gathering in Poplar Bluff this weekend.

A Patriot Day Remembrance event will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 am on Saturday, September 9th at the American Legion Post #153 on Kanell Boulevard in Poplar Bluff.

There will be a 9/11 commemoration, remembrance walk, and cookout as a part of the event.
