US MARSHALL’S OFFICE ASSISTS IN ARREST OF MAN WHO FLED FROM DEXTER TRAFFIC STOP
A man who fled from a traffic stop in Dexter last month has been taken into custody.
Dexter Police Chief Hank Trout tells KWOC News that 28 year Chris Smith, of Poplar Bluff, fled from a traffic stop on August 12th near the area of Houston and Whitman street. Smith had an active warrant for his arrest and was not able to be located at the time.
Trout says that the US Marshall’s Office has been working with the Dexter Police Department and Marshalls were able to apprehend Smith on September 5th in Springfield.

PRICE INCREASE APPROVED FOR MDC PERMITS
The cost to hunt in Missouri will go up early next year.
The Missouri Conservation Commission gave final approval at its open meeting on Friday to adjust prices for most hunting, fishing, trapping, and commercial permits offered by the Missouri Department of Conservation.
The price increases will take effect beginning on February 29th, 2024.
On average, most resident hunting and fishing permit prices will be adjusted by about one dollar.
Officials say that most MDC permit prices have remained the same for the past 20 years.
MDC proposed the permit price adjustments in an effort to keep up with rising costs of goods and services it uses to manage its more than 1,000 conservation areas along with nature centers, shooting ranges, fish hatcheries, and other facilities.
WOMAN FLOWN TO MEMPHIS HOSPITAL FOLLOWING CRASH IN BUTLER COUNTY
A Broseley woman was badly injured in a single vehicle crash early Sunday morning.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 23 year old Destanee Barton was driving on westbound US Highway 60 when her vehicle ran off the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned.
Officials say the crash occurred at around 3:10 am.
Barton suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a Memphis hospital.
THREE RIVERS COLLEGE TO HOST MEET THE RAIDERS EVENT
The Three Rivers College athletic season is fast approaching and area residents will have the opportunity to meet some of the players who will be representing the Raiders this year.
The college is hosting a “Meet the Raiders” event beginning at 6 pm this evening at the Libla Family Sports Complex.
The event will showcase the players and coaches for the Raiders basketball and baseball teams, the Lady Raiders basketball and softball teams, the rodeo team, the Esports team, and the cheer team.
IMBODEN MAN KILLED IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS WRECK
One man is dead in connection to an early morning crash in Randolph County.
According to the Arkansas State Police, 70 year old David Davis, of Imboden, crashed into the trailer of a mack truck early Friday morning at the intersection of US Highway 62 and Muddy Lane.
Officials say that Davis was pronounced dead at the scene by the Randolph County Coroner. No injuries were listed for the driver of the mack truck.
DRIVING SURFACE IMPROVEMENTS TO CAUSE DELAYS ON ROAD IN CARTER AND WAYNE COUNTIES
Missouri Department of Transportation crews will be making driving surface improvements on Route A in Carter and Wayne Counties through the middle of this week.
The section of roadway that will be affected by this project is located from Route 60 to Route 49 near Ellsinore.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Wednesday. During the project, Route A will be open to local traffic only.
ROAD CLOSURE SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN MATTHEWS AREA
Route FF in New Madrid County will be closed today in the Matthews area so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace a culvert under the roadway.
According to officials, the closure will be located between Route H and County Road 820.
Weather permitting, work will take place today between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

RUN 4 THE ARTS COMING UP THIS WEEKEND
The 8th annual Run 4 the Arts, hosted by Three Rivers College, is coming up this weekend.
The four-mile run or walk, along with a one-mile walk, will be held at 8 am on Saturday, September 9th at the TRC Poplar Bluff Campus. The course will begin and end in front of the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.

CURRENT RIVER CLEANUP SET FOR SATURDAY

TODAY IS THE DEADLINE TO PURCHASE TAGS FOR BULKY ITEM PICKUP
Today is the final day for Poplar Bluff residents to purchase tags for this month’s Bulky Item Pickup.
Residents can purchase bulk item tags from the City Collector’s office at City Hall for $20. The tags entitle you to the removal of four bulk items, such as couches or refrigerators. Tires may be collected for a charge of $3 per tire with a limit of four tires.
No construction materials or small items will be picked up and the program is for residential areas only.
Today is the final day to purchase item tags at City Hall to be included in next week’s pick up, which will be conducted on Tuesday, September 12th.
OVER 300 CRASHES REPORTED IN MISSOURI OVER LABOR DAY WEEKEND
State officials say that there were over 10 fatalities reported over the Labor Day holiday weekend.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 12 people were killed in traffic crashes during the counting period, which began at 6 pm on Friday, September 1st and ended at 11:59 pm on Monday.
There were a total of 306 traffic crashes, which resulted in 146 people injured. 119 people were also arrested for driving while impaired.
There were also 11 boating crashes over the weekend, resulting in two people injured and no fatalities.
CONSTRUCTION CREWS IMPROVING ROUTE 162 IN THE PORTAGEVILLE AREA
Construction crews are making driving surface improvements today on Route 162 in New Madrid County.
The work zone is located from Route M to Interstate 55 near Portageville.
Weather permitting, crews will be working today through 7 p.m. While work is underway, the road will be open to local traffic only.

WOMAN REPORTED MISSING EARLIER THIS WEEK TAKEN INTO CUSTODY
A woman who was reported missing earlier this week in Poplar Bluff is now in custody.
Lieutenant Josh Stewart with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News that 49 year old Debra Wright of Poplar Bluff, was reported missing on Monday and crews worked Monday and Tuesday searching in the area of the Sportsman Park Conservation Access on Black River in an attempt to find her.
Tuesday evening Wright contacted authorities through a third party saying she was alive and well.

JUVENILE RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL AFTER BEING RUN OVER DURING LABOR DAY PARADE
A child was run over during a Labor Day parade earlier this week.
According to Rector Chief of Police Roger Haywood, on Monday a pee-wee cheerleader for the Rector Cougars was walking next to a float when she slipped and fell partially under a small trailer.
Haywood says that the child suffered mild to moderate injuries and was transported to an area hospital. She has since been released.
POPLAR BLUFF STREET DEPARTMENT VEHICLES VANDALIZED
Poplar Bluff police have received a report of vandalism of city property.
According to the Police Department, an employee of the Poplar Bluff Street Department has reported that three city vehicles were vandalized over the holiday weekend.
No information was released on the amount of damages done to the vehicles or who was responsible.
POPLAR BLUFF BUSINESS TO RECEIVE ALMOST $400,000 GRANT
A Poplar Bluff business will be getting almost $400,000 for renewable energy efficiency improvements.
U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development and Missouri State Director Kyle Wilkens tells KWOC News Empire Comfort Systems is receiving a $388,088 grant to install an 850 Kilowatt solar array.
This project is expected to save $100,927 per year. It will generate over one million kilowatt hours per year which is enough energy to power 99 homes.
FEDERAL DISASTER DECLARATION REQUESTED FOR 33 MISSOURI COUNTIES INCLUDING WAYNE AND NEW MADRID
Missouri Governor Mike Parson has requested that President Joe Biden approve a major disaster declaration to provide federal assistance in 33 counties in response to multiple severe weather systems that impacted Missouri from July 29th through August 14th.
Southeast Missouri counties involved in the request include Wayne, New Madrid, Madison, and Bollinger.
According to the Governor’s office, Joint Preliminary Damage Assessments conducted by SEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and local emergency managers estimate more than $14 million in infrastructure damage and emergency response costs eligible for federal assistance.
If approved, local governments and qualifying nonprofit agencies may seek federal assistance for reimbursement of emergency response and recovery costs, including repair and replacement costs for damaged roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI WOMAN GETS LIFE SENTENCE ON MURDER CHARGE
A Southeast Missouri woman has been ordered to spend the rest of her life behind bars.
According to Missouri Case Net, 38 year old Ashley Riggins, of Charleston, was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without parole on a charge of murder 1st degree.
The charge stems from the stabbing death of Dottie Lutes in 2020, which Riggins was found guilty of in April.
Riggins was also convicted of other charges including armed criminal action, tampering with physical evidence, abandonment of a corpse, and two counts of abuse or neglect of a child.
EARTHQUAKE SHAKES SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
A small earthquake shook parts of Southeast Missouri Tuesday night.
According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 2.2 earthquake was recorded at 10:29 pm Tuesday night.
The earthquake was located around two miles northwest of Marston and had a depth of over seven miles.
Officials say that residents as far away as Doniphan reported feeling the effects of the quake.
ROAD WORK SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN RIPLEY COUNTY
Route 142 East in Ripley County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform core drilling operations.
The work zone will be located near Naylor between Little Black River Bridge and County Road B-3AA.
Work is scheduled to take place today from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
CULVERT REPLACEMENT SET FOR TODAY NEAR CAMPBELL
Route WW in Dunklin County will be reduced today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.
The section of roadway being reduced is located from County Road 202 to County Road 206 near Campbell.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol, Poplar Bluff Police Department, Butler County Coroner’s Office, and Poplar Bluff Fire Department were all involved in the search.
CARTER COUNTY MOTORCYCLE CRASH LEADS TO ONE DEATH
A Clarkton man is dead in connection to a motorcycle crash on Labor Day.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 65 year old Chris Terrell was riding the motorcycle on Missouri Highway 21, near the intersection of US Highway 60, when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and overturned.
Terrell was pronounced dead at the scene by the Carter County Coroner.
A passenger on the vehicle, 60 year old Regina Hawkins, also of Clarkton, received serious injuries and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.
MAN SHOOTS TASER AT OFFICERS DURING ARREST ATTEMPT
A man is facing multiple charges after he allegedly shot a taser at officers during an arrest attempt.
According to a warrant, on September 1st officers met at the home of 30 year old Governor Faulkner, in Paragould, after receiving a report from a 15 year old juvenile of attempted sexual abuse.
Faulkner had allegedly attempted to meet the juvenile, disseminated pictures of sexual explicit conduct, and requested videos and pictures of sexually explicit conduct from the victim.
When officers attempted to arrest Faulkner at his residence, the defendant unholstered the officer’s taser and fired the device two times in close proximity of two officers heads.
One of the prongs struck a patrol vehicle. The officer was able to regain control of the taser and the defendant began to comply.
The defendant also reportedly kicked officers during the incident. Both officers suffered multiple minor scrapes, bruises and cuts to the arms, hands, and knees.
Faulkner is facing charges of internet stalking of a child, possession or use of child sexual abuse material, disarming an officer, battery in the second degree, resisting arrest, and criminal mischief in the second degree. He is being held in the Greene County Detention Center on a two million dollar cash only bond.
SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH LEAVES ONE DEAD IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS
A single vehicle crash has claimed the life of a Northeast Arkansas man.
According to the Arkansas State Police, 59 year old Glen Cook, of Biggers, was a passenger in a vehicle on Biggers Reyno Road in rural Randolph County when the vehicle ran into a ditch.
The vehicle then struck a ditch embankment and overturned.
Officials say that Cook was killed in the crash. No injuries were listed for the driver.
KENNETT AREA ROAD TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR ROADWORK
Route UU in Dunklin County is being closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.
The work zone is located from Route NN to County Road 729 near Kennett.
Weather permitting, the closure is scheduled to be in effect today until 4 p.m.
PEMISCOT COUNTY ROAD CLOSED FOR CULVERT REPLACEMENT
Route Z in Pemiscot County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.
Officials say the section of roadway being closed is located from County Road 456 to County Road 431.

Area community members will be gathering in Poplar Bluff this weekend.
A Patriot Day Remembrance event will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 am on Saturday, September 9th at the American Legion Post #153 on Kanell Boulevard in Poplar Bluff.
There will be a 9/11 commemoration, remembrance walk, and cookout as a part of the event.

YOUNG CHILD KILLED IN RIPLEY COUNTY CRASH
A young child was killed in a single vehicle crash over the weekend.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred Saturday evening when a vehicle ran off of County Road N-2 in the Oxly area. The vehicle then struck an embankment and overturned.
Officials say that a five year old child in the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene by a Ripley County Deputy Coroner. No injuries were listed for the driver.
STODDARD COUNTY FAIR SET FOR LATE SEPTEMBER
The schedule has been announced for the 96th Stoddard County Fair.
The fair will kick-off with the parade in downtown Dexter on Tuesday, September 19th at 5:30 pm.
There will be multiple nights of entertainment and events including a gospel performance and exhibitions by the Robinson Chainsaw Carvers.
Other events include the livestock auction, demo derby, and rodeo.

WOMAN FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A CRASH NEAR VAN BUREN
Two people were injured, one seriously, in a weekend collision near Van Buren.
According to the Highway Patrol, 39 year old Meljin Hernandez, of Van Buren, was driving on Missouri Highway 21, when his vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected and then traveled across the roadway into the path of another vehicle.
A passenger in the second vehicle suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a Springfield hospital. Hernandez received moderate injuries and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.
PAVEMENT REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY NEAR ADVANCE
Route BB in Stoddard County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs near Advance.
According to officials, the work zone will be located between Route K and Route M.
Weather permitting, crews will be working today from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
ALMOST THREE MONTH LONG ROAD PROJECT BEGINS TODAY IN CARTER COUNTY
Route 60 in Carter and Shannon Counties will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction for almost three months as contractor crews perform roadside work.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the work zone is located from Route DD to Route M near Van Buren.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through Thursday, November 30th.

NAMES RELEASED OF SUBJECTS KILLED IN POPLAR BLUFF AREA CRASH
Officials have released the names of two people who were killed in a Poplar Bluff area crash Thursday morning.
According to Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash was located on Butler County Road 470, four miles west of Poplar Bluff.
Butler County Coroner Jim Akers tells KWOC News that the deceased have been identified as 43 year old Patricia McIntosh and 25 year old Lacy Gilbertsen, of Poplar Bluff. A seven year old juvenile was also killed in the crash and their name was not released.

FATALITY REPORTED FOLLOWING CRASH IN RIPLEY COUNTY
A Poplar Bluff man is dead in connection to a crash Thursday morning in Ripley County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash was located on Route T, three miles north of Oxly.
A vehicle driven by a 16 year old girl from Qulin ran off the side of the road and overturned.
A passenger in the vehicle, 31 year old Sherkil Reed, of Poplar Bluff, was pronounced dead at the scene by Ripley County Coroner Mike Jackson.
The driver and a second passenger each suffered minor injuries and were transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.
NORTHEAST ARKANSAS MAN ARRESTED ON RAPE CHARGE
A Northeast Arkansas man was taken into custody earlier this week on a rape charge.
According to a bench warrant issued in Randolph County on Wednesday, 67 year old Raymond Hostetler is facing multiple charges including felony rape.
The incidents allegedly occurred between 2007 and 2010.
Officials say that Hostetler was taken into custody and has bonded out.
HIGHWAY PATROL URGES SAFETY FOR LABOR DAY WEEKEND
With Labor Day weekend upon us, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is urging everyone to be safe during the holiday weekend.
The Highway Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. over the Labor Day holiday weekend.
Troopers will be patrolling Missouri’s roadways, enforcing Missouri’s speed limit, seat belt, and impaired driving laws, in addition to being available to assist motorists.
Last year, seven people were killed and 398 were injured in Missouri over the Labor Day holiday weekend in 1,041 traffic crashes. Also, 121 people were arrested by the Highway Patrol for driving while intoxicated.
The Labor Day holiday is also a busy boating weekend. In 2022, there were eight boating crashes which included one fatality and five injuries.
MISSING SOUTHEAST MISSOURI TEENAGER FOUND SAFE
Updating a story we brought you earlier this week, a missing teenager in Southeast Missouri has been found.
Fredericktown Police Chief Eric Hovis says that 15 year old Chloe Alison Adams has been located safe.
Hovis is thanking the work of the Fredericktown Police Department, FBI, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and Madison County Dispatchers for helping get Adams home safely.
MAN KILLED IN STABBING INCIDENT IN THE MISSOURI BOOTHEEL
An investigation has led to the arrest of a juvenile in connection to a stabbing in the Missouri bootheel.
Few details have been made available, however authorities say that a 33 year old man was pronounced dead following the incident earlier this week in Kennett.
The name of the victim has not been released.
A juvenile has been taken into custody pending charges being filed.
MANAGED WATERFOWL RESERVATIONS BEGIN TODAY
The Missouri Department of Conservation will be accepting reservations for managed waterfowl hunts beginning today.
The MDC offers managed waterfowl hunting on more than a dozen conservation areas specially managed with a focus on wetlands. Hunters can apply for a reservation or participate in a daily morning drawing for opportunities to hunt at these areas. MDC also offers waterfowl hunting in other conservation areas.
The pre-season reservation period will run from today to September 18th with the results being posted on October 1st.
Missouri residents and qualifying non-residents, such as students from out of state or members of the military stationed in Missouri, can apply online for a reservation to guarantee them an opportunity to hunt on a specific day in a specific area.
Residents and nonresidents can also arrive at a managed waterfowl hunting area the morning they wish to hunt and wait in line for the possibility of getting a hunting spot.
Applicants for waterfowl reservations must have their required permits to apply, and their Federal Duck Stamp to hunt.

MISSOURI GOVERNOR ATTENDING EVENT IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI THIS MORNING

THREE RIVERS COLLEGE TO HOST MEET THE RAIDERS EVENT
The Three Rivers College athletic season is fast approaching and area residents will have the opportunity to meet some of the players who will be representing the Raiders this year.

MAN SENTENCED IN CARTER COUNTY ON KIDNAPPING AND SODOMY CHARGES
A Grandin man is facing nine years in prison for kidnapping and sodomy.
According to the Carter County Sheriff’s Office, in January of this year, 33 year old Justin Presley was arrested following a report from a minor.
An investigation into the report led to Presley being charged with kidnapping of a minor in the first degree and two counts of sodomy in the first degree.

POPLAR BLUFF BUSINESS APPROVED FOR OVER 26 MILLION DOLLAR LOAN TO BUILD AND IMPROVE 16 MILES OF ELECTRIC TRANSMISSION LINES
A Poplar Bluff based business has been chosen to receive a multi million dollar loan to improve area electrical infrastructure.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, M&A Electric Power Cooperative will be getting an over 26 million dollar loan to build and improve 16 miles of transmission line. Officials say that the loan includes over 1.4 million dollars for smart grid technologies.
M&A Electric Power Cooperative is a Generation and Transmission electric cooperative in Poplar Bluff that provides wholesale electric service to four distribution cooperatives in southeast Missouri.
The Cooperatives then provide electric service to an average of 90,000 distribution consumers in 20 counties in Missouri.
STODDARD COUNTY PROSECUTING ATTORNEY REQUESTS FORMAL INVESTIGATION AFTER DEPUTY ALLEGEDLY SHOOTS A DOG AT OTTER SLOUGH
A formal investigation has been requested following an incident on Sunday involving a Stoddard County deputy.
According to Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Sawyer Smith, the criminal investigation request is regarding events that took place on August 27th, which involved a deputy shooting a dog at Otter Slough Conservation Area.
The request was made to the Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control.
Stoddard County Sheriff Carl Hefner says that a deputy was dispatched to a residence on Sunday about an injured dog that was later euthanized.
He added that there have been several concerns raised about the handling of this call and accusations have been made about criminal wrongdoing.
Hefner is also requesting that the Missouri State Highway Patrol investigate the incident.
DEADLINES ALMOST HERE TO REGISTER FOR VARIOUS FALL SPORTS IN POPLAR BLUFF
The deadlines are almost here to get you or your children registered for various fall sports in Poplar Bluff.
According to Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation, today is the final day to register for the fall youth tennis league or fall junior tennis training.
Thursday will be the last day for area churches to sign their teams up for men’s church league fall softball.
Friday is the deadline for parents to register their kids for the Poplar Bluff Optimist Soccer League.

CITY OF BERNIE CHOSEN FOR OVER 3 MILLION DOLLAR GRANT FOR WASTEWATER PROJECT
The United States Department of Agriculture has announced that a Southeast Missouri city will receive over 10 million dollars for a wastewater project.
The USDA is providing a $10.1 million loan and grant combination to the city of Bernie through the Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program to complete improvements to the city’s water distribution system, water treatment plant, and water storage tanks.
The project will help correct excessive water loss; replace lead-joint cast iron and galvanized steel prone to leakage and breaks; and address inadequate valves, hydrants, and line sizes.
3.4 million dollars of the award is grant money, while the other 6.6 million dollars is a loan.
The USDA also announced the city of Van Buren will be receiving a 2.9 million dollar grant to make corrections to the city's waste water collection lines and make needed upgrades to the waste water treatment plant.
MODOT CREWS TO PERFORM BRIDGE MAINTENANCE TODAY ON ROUTE 158 IN BUTLER COUNTY
Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation will be closing Route 158 in Butler County today for bridge maintenance.
According to MoDOT officials, the bridge is located between County Road 341 and Route 142.
Weather permitting, the road is scheduled to be closed through 4 pm today.
CULVERT REPLACEMENT TO FORCE TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF PEMISCOT COUNTY ROAD
Route Z in Pemiscot County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.
The work zone is located from Route J to County Road 440 near Braggadocio.

MISSING WOMAN FOUND DEAD IN DUNKLIN COUNTY
An investigation is ongoing after a missing woman was found dead in the Missouri bootheel.
According to the Dunklin County Sheriff’s Office, on Saturday, deputies received a call from the Campbell Police Department for assistance in a missing person case. Two adults and two juveniles were reported missing after not returning home on the night of the 25th. The report was made by the mother of one of the missing adults.
The last communication received was that one of the missing adults, Megan Oxley, was driving a Dodge Grand Caravan with the other three missing persons in the Kennett area and that her phone was about dead and the vehicle was almost out of gas.

A ping was conducted on Oxley’s phone which revealed the subjects may be in the area of County Road 522. During the investigation, it was learned that the other adult listed as missing was let out at a local convenience store in Kennett and was no longer with the others. It was also learned that the children listed as missing were not the children of the victim.
Oxley’s vehicle was later found in a field row with Oxley deceased in the driver’s seat. The two juveniles were located in the vehicle and transported by deputies to Kennett where they met up with ambulance personnel. The children were then transported to area hospitals for treatment.
An autopsy for Oxley was scheduled for Monday morning and the results have not been released.
ONE IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING NON FATAL SHOOTING IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
A man has been taken into custody for allegedly shooting his girlfriend on Sunday.
Sergeant Tyler Rowe with the Sikeston Department of Public Safety tells KWOC News that at around 3 pm on Sunday, officers responded to a report of a woman with a gunshot wound to her side.
The woman was treated at the scene and then transported by ambulance to an area hospital for further medical treatment.
Through the course of the investigation, officers were able to determine the victim had been shot by her boyfriend. The suspect was later located in Cape Girardeau County and taken into custody.
Rowe says that the suspect has been identified as Dale-Wadrick Winters Jr., of Sikeston.
He is being held on a no bond warrant for New Madrid County charges of domestic assault 1st, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon.
The victim is listed in stable condition and her name is not being released at this time.
REPAIRS UNDERWAY FOR HIGHWAY 67, SOUTH OF POPLAR BLUFF
Southbound Route 67 in Butler County is being reduced to one lane with an 11-foot width restriction for over two months as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.
The section of roadway involved in the project is located from Route 160 to the Arkansas state line.
Weather permitting, work will take place daily through Wednesday, November 1st. Officials say there will be intermittent lane closures at various locations throughout this work zone.
ONE KILLED IN MOTORCYCLE CRASH OVER THE WEEKEND
A weekend motorcycle crash in Southeast Missouri claimed the life of a Mississippi man.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 55 year old Darrell Jones, of Walls, Mississippi, was driving a motorcycle on Interstate 55 Sunday in Pemiscot County, when he crashed into a vehicle that was stopped in the left lane.
Jones was pronounced dead at the scene by Pemiscot County Coroner Brian Irions.
Officials say that no one in the second vehicle was injured in the collision.
FENTANYL INVESTIGATION LEADS TO TWO ARRESTS IN NEW MADRID COUNTY
A joint investigation by the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department, the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, and officers with the Drug Enforcement Administration has resulted in multiple arrests.
According to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, on Friday, officers were able to gather and investigate information regarding subjects transporting fentanyl through Southeast Missouri.
New Madrid County Deputies were able to locate the vehicle and found fentanyl, along with a firearm, during a traffic stop.
Two subjects have been taken into custody on no bond arrest warrants for trafficking drugs 1st degree charges, Steven Townsend and Diamond Craft, both of Sikeston.
Townsend is also facing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon.

ATF NATIONAL RESPONSE TEAM INVESTIGATING FIRE IN WAYNE COUNTY
National authorities are assisting with the investigation of a fire in Wayne County.
According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the National Response Team of ATF arrived on-scene Wednesday to join agents from the Cape Girardeau, St. Louis and Fairview Heights ATF Offices in investigating a large fire that destroyed parts of Buffington Farms in Williamsville.
During the early morning hours of August 22nd, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office responded to a large fire on the grounds of Buffington Farms on Wayne County Road 417.
The fire did extensive damage to structures and equipment, resulting in well over $1 million in damages.
The fire is being jointly investigated by the ATF, Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and Missouri Fire Marshal’s Office.
WOMAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN CRASH NEAR POPLAR BLUFF
A Poplar Bluff woman was transported to an area hospital on Saturday after being involved in a single vehicle crash.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 48 year old Gigi Fowler was driving on US Highway 67, eight miles north of Poplar Bluff, when her vehicle ran off the roadway and overturned.
Fowler suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken by ambulance to a Cape Girardeau hospital.
AUTHORITIES IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI SEARCHING FOR MISSING TEENAGER
A search is currently underway for a missing teenager in Southeast Missouri.
Officials with the Fredericktown Police Department tell KWOC News that 15 year old Chloe Alison Adams was last seen at around 10:30 a.m. on August 16th when she left the home of a family friend in Fredericktown.
Police Chief Eric Hovis says that Adams left a note saying she would be back in a few days and not to call the police. Due to the note, the case does not qualify for an AMBER Alert, however it is still a very serious matter as she has not contacted any friends or family since she left.

The Poplar Bluff Mules Football team is looking to get the 2023 football season off to a great start tonight against the Rebels of Park Hills Central.
The Mules will host the Rebels tonight at Poplar Bluff High School, with kickoff set for 8 pm. It will be the first game for each team this season. The teams also met to open the season last year with the Rebels claiming a 29-7 victory.
The Mules went 4-5 in the regular season last year before falling to Cape Central in the Class 5, District 1 Finals. Park Hills finished the 2022 campaign with an 11-2 record, with their season coming to an end in the Class 3 State Quarterfinals.

ONE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN CRASH NEAR GRANDIN
A Southeast Missouri woman was seriously injured in a single vehicle crash Thursday morning.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 42 year Crystal Brandon, of Ellsinore, was driving on Route O, near Grandin, when her vehicle traveled off the left side of the road and overturned.
Brandon suffered serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to a Poplar Bluff hospital.
9TH ANNUAL RIDE FOR A CURE TO BE HELD THIS WEEKEND
The 9th Annual Ride for a Cure Dice Run in memory of Larry Maronay has been scheduled for this weekend.
Registration for the event will begin at 10 am on Saturday at the Dexter Elks Lodge, with the ride beginning at 11 am. The entry fee is $20 per bike and $10 for an additional rider with a meal included at the end of the ride.
All proceeds will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

MANAGED WATERFOWL RESERVATIONS TO NEXT WEEK
The Missouri Department of Conservation will be accepting reservations for managed waterfowl hunts beginning next week.
The MDC offers managed waterfowl hunting on more than a dozen conservation areas specially managed with a focus on wetlands. Hunters can apply for a reservation or participate in a daily morning drawing for opportunities to hunt at these areas. MDC also offers waterfowl hunting in other conservation areas.
The pre-season reservation period will run from September 1st to September 18th with the results being posted on October 1st.
Missouri residents and qualifying non-residents, such as students from out of state or members of the military stationed in Missouri, can apply online for a reservation to guarantee them an opportunity to hunt on a specific day in a specific area.
Residents and nonresidents can also arrive at a managed waterfowl hunting area the morning they wish to hunt and wait in line for the possibility of getting a hunting spot.
Applicants for waterfowl reservations must have their required permits to apply, and their Federal Duck Stamp to hunt.

EARTHQUAKE SHAKES SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
A small earthquake shook Southeast Missouri earlier this week.
According to the United States Geological Survey, a 2.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 7:53 pm Wednesday night.
The quake was located just under two miles east southeast of Hayward and had a depth of over eight and a half miles.

Two juveniles that went missing earlier this month in Northeast Arkansas have been found safe.
According to the Piggott Police Department, two sisters, ages 17 and 15, went missing after leaving an area residence on August 7th.
Officials reported Tuesday night that the two girls were located and are safe. The officials added that there are aspects of the situation that were under investigation and no further information was released.

THREE SCHOOLS SET TO START TODAY IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
School opening week in Southeast Missouri will be wrapping up today with at least three more schools welcoming back students.
Dexter, Ripley County R-3, and Ripley County R-4 are all beginning their school years today.
With most schools having started, motorists are again reminded to be mindful of increased traffic on roadways as well as an increase in student drivers.
NEW LAW TO TAKE EFFECT NEXT WEEK PROHIBITING DRIVERS FROM PHYSICALLY USING PHONES WHILE DRIVING
A new law will take effect prohibiting drivers from physically using their phones while driving in Missouri.
Missouri Governor Mike Parson has signed the Siddens Bening Hands-Free Law, prohibiting all drivers from using a handheld electronic communication device while driving, effective Monday, August 28th.
When the law takes effect, drivers can no longer physically hold or support, with any part of their body, an electronic communication device; write, send, or read any text-based communication; or make a phone call without the use of the hands-free or voice-operated feature or function.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, only warnings will be issued to non commercial drivers prior to January 1, 2025 and a person can’t be stopped solely for a violation of these provisions.
TWO ARRESTED ON METH AND MARIJUANA CHARGES
Two people have been arrested in Clay County on multiple drug related charges.
Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole tells KWOC News that on Tuesday, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with two occupants.
When the driver opened her door, the deputy noticed a baggy with a white substance in plain view.
The deputy then conducted a search of the vehicle which resulted in the driver, identified as 42 year old Tammy Lutes, of McDougal, and a passenger, 43 year old Danielle Householder, of Paragould, both being arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance for meth and marijuana.
Following the arrest, both were transported to the Clay County Detention Center.
ELLSINORE MAN FACING FELONY METH CHARGE
An Ellsinore man is facing a felony meth charge following his arrest Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 40 year old Eric Jackson was arrested shortly after 1:30 pm Wednesday on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine.
Jackson is also facing charges of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and no plates.
Following the arrest, he was held at the Carter County Jail.
BRIDGE MAINTENANCE SET FOR TODAY NEAR CANALOU

Dexter Chief of Police Hank Trout tells KWOC News that at around 4:40 am Tuesday morning, a man arrived at an emergency room in Dexter with gunshot wounds.
The victim, identified as 33 year old Erik Schmidt, of Dexter, was then transferred to a Memphis hospital and is listed in stable condition.
An investigation by the Stoddard County Major Case Squad is underway and a suspect has been taken into custody.
The name of the suspect is being withheld until formal charges have been filed.
Officials believe the shooting occurred at a residence on North First Street in Dexter.

11 MORE SCHOOLS STARTING THE YEAR TODAY IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
Students in at least 11 more Southeast Missouri school districts will be starting their classes today as school opening week continues.
Neelyville will be starting their school year today, as will Doniphan, Advance, Puxico, Charleston, and Bloomfield.
School Opening week will wrap up for the most part on Thursday, as Dexter, Ripley County R-3, and Ripley County R-4 all welcome back students.
TEN DIGIT DIALING COMING TO SOUTHEAST MISSOURI EARLY NEXT YEAR
Phone users in Southeast Missouri will soon have to start using the area code when making local phone calls.
According to the Missouri Public Service Commission, phone numbers with the 235 area code may be assigned to the same area that is currently covered by the 573 area code beginning on March 24, 2024.
Officials say that an overlay plan introduces a new area code within the entire area code, so that multiple area codes are assigned to the same area. An overlay plan does not require any customers to change telephone numbers, but it does require ten-digit dialing on all local calls.
Beginning February 24, 2024, all local calls made within the 573 area code must be placed using 10 digits. On and after that date, calls placed using just 7 digits will not be completed.
The 573 area code serves multiple communities in Eastern and Central Missouri, including Poplar Bluff, Sikeston, Caruthersville, Cape Girardeau, Jefferson City, and Rolla.
BILLY DEPEW APPOINTED TO POPLAR BLUFF CITY COUNCIL
Poplar Bluff City Councilmembers have decided on who will fill the vacant position on the council.
By a vote of 5-1, the Council decided Monday night to appoint Billy Depew to take the seat left vacant by the resignation of Robert Duckett, who stepped down in June due to moving outside the city. The lone no vote was Mayor Shane Cornman.
Depew will complete Duckett’s unexpired term until the next regular municipal election.
Before Depew’s vote, a motion to appoint David Boyer to the seat failed by a split vote of 3-3.
BUS TRACKING APP ROLLS OUT TO PARENTS IN POPLAR BLUFF
Poplar Bluff parents have a new tool to aid with getting their kids on the school bus.
The Poplar Bluff School District has rolled out its new bus tracking app “Here Comes The Bus” which offers families the ability to monitor the arrival and departure of buses in real time with push notifications sent automatically to a smartphone device or via the web.
Students scan their district-issued ID when entering and exiting the bus, and drivers will have access to a touchscreen with a name-based ridership module for the lower grade levels. The geofence can be set between 750 feet and two miles eliminating wait times at bus stops, and real-time alerts will automatically be sent to caregivers when students have arrived at school.
Individuals may only sign up for push notifications if they are on the student’s emergency contact list.
The district piloted the application in the spring at the Early Childhood and Kindergarten centers with a test group of about 30 parents in order to help troubleshoot.
$50,000 POWERBALL TICKET PURCHASED IN BLOOMFIELD
A Southeast Missouri Powerball player won $50,000 earlier this month.
According to the Missouri Lottery, the winner, whose name was not released, purchased the ticket at a business in Bloomfield of August 7th drawing.
She matched 4 of the five white balls, along with the powerball, to win $50,000.
Lottery officials say that players in Stoddard County won more than 6.3 million dollars total during the 2022 fiscal year.
EROSION WORK COULD CAUSE DELAYS TODAY ON NORTHBOUND INTERSTATE 55
Northbound Interstate 55 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform erosion work.
The section of roadway being reduced is located between mile markers 49 and 52 near New Madrid.
Weather permitting, work will take place today from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Two people are in custody in connection to the death of a man in Butler County.

An investigation was started by the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, with the cooperation of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Butler County Coroner’s Office.
Dobbs says that two subjects have been arrested due to the investigation. 42 year old Carl Markham has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, with his bond set at $100,000. 36 year old Laura Adkinson is facing a charge of felony possession of a controlled substance and her bond is set at $25,000.
Sheriff Dobbs added that additional charges may be requested as the investigation continues and autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

“Most of us think we're pretty tough when it comes to heat like this, but it doesn't take much to wear you out no matter how old you are. So it's important to start work early if you can. If you work outdoors and end early in the day, maybe start just right around sunrise and wind down by early to mid-afternoon. Because the real window for hot weather is going to be between two and five, that's when we have peak heating going on. Same story goes for keeping an eye out for elderly neighbors that may have issues with air conditioning or don't have an air conditioner. May not remember to turn on the fan, they can become very warm and overwhelmed quickly. And also watch your pets, livestock as well too, because it won't take long for them to be overheated. And if you've got somebody staying in the car while you run inside, maybe making an errand or something, make sure and keep the air conditioner on high while you're away.”

AT LEAST 20 MORE SCHOOLS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI TO BEGIN SCHOOL YEAR TODAY
School opening week in Southeast Missouri continues today with at least 30 more schools welcoming back students.
The school year will begin today for kids in the Twin Rivers, Malden, Sikeston, Holcomb, Van Buren, and Clearwater school districts, among others.
At least 11 more schools will start on Wednesday, including Neelyville, Doniphan, Puxico, Advance, and Bloomfield.
MULES SEASON OPENER DELAYED AN HOUR DUE TO HEAT
Poplar Bluff football fans will have to wait a little bit longer for the Mules 2023 season to kick off.
According to Poplar Bluff Athletics Director Kent Keith, the kick off for the Friday night Mules season opening game has been pushed back an hour due to the extreme temperatures forecasted for this week.
Kick-off for the game against Park Hills Central will now be held at 8 pm on Friday. Keith says that the gates will open at 6:30 pm.
Every Poplar Bluff Mules game this season will be broadcast live on Today’s Talk KWOC 93.3 FM and 930 AM as well as on the KWOC Facebook and River Radio Youtube pages.
CAMPBELL MAN CONVICTED OF MANSLAUGHTER IN 2021 SHOOTING DEATH
A Campbell man will be sentenced next month following his conviction on a manslaughter charge.
Dunklin County Prosecuting Attorney Nicholas Jain tells KWOC News that 62 year old Phillip Cooper was found guilty of shooting
and killing Jerry Ott in October 2021.
Cooper was tried and sentenced by a jury in Butler County last week.
The Butler County jury deliberated for more than 3 hours and ultimately sided with Jain despite Cooper’s claim that Ott had pulled a firearm before he was shot.
Cooper was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter, armed criminal action, tampering with physical evidence, and abandonment of a corpse.
The jury recommended the maximum possible sentence on three of the four counts, 15 years in the Department of Corrections for voluntary manslaughter, three years for armed criminal action, and four years for both tampering with physical evidence and abandonment of a corpse.
A formal sentencing hearing is scheduled for September 26th following a sentencing assessment report by the Division of Probation and Parole.
DEXTER MAN FOUND WITH OVER 30 GRAMS OF METHAMPHETAMINE, FACING DRUG TRAFFICKING CHARGE
A drug bust in Stoddard County has one man facing a trafficking charge.
According to a probable cause affidavit, shortly before 8 am on Sunday an officer made contact with 51 year old Darren Ashworth, of Dexter, after receiving a report of a subject riding a bike around a home and yelling loudly.
The officer found Ashworth to be in possession of a baggy containing over 31 grams of a white crystal like substance that was later field tested and showed a positive presence of methamphetamine.
Ashworth was taken into custody on a charge of trafficking drugs 2nd degree due to the weight of the substance.
According to Missouri Case Net, Ashworth is scheduled to make his initial appearance in court this morning.
INTERSTATE 55 ON RAMPS CLOSED THIS WEEK FOR PAVEMENT REPAIRS
Two Interstate 55 on ramps will be closed this week in Southeast Missouri
The Southbound I-55 on ramps at Exits 17B and 19 in Pemiscot County will be closed this week as contractor crews perform pavement repairs.
According to MoDOT, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m daily through Friday. The work zone will be in place 24 hours a day until work is completed.
The work zone will be marked with signs and motorists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling near the area.

A crash Sunday morning west of Doniphan, has resulted in the death of a Doniphan man.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 78 year old Robert Collett, of Doniphan, was driving on Missouri Highway 142, two miles west of Doniphan, when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck another vehicle.
The wreck occurred Sunday morning shortly before 9 am. Collett was pronounced dead at the scene by Ripley County Coroner Mike Jackson.

HEAT WAVE STRIKES SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS
Area residents are reminded to stay cool during the heat wave that is hitting Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas.
According to a Special Weather Statement from the National Weather Service, high temperatures are forecast to reach the mid 90’s and will combine with high humidity to yield peak heat index values from 105 to 110 across a large portion of the region this afternoon.
Even more oppressive heat and humidity are expected Tuesday through Friday. An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect through 10 pm on Thursday.
During the heat wave, use caution if you must be outside for any length of time. Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning and drink plenty of water to replenish lost fluids.
Also remember to never leave a child or a pet in a hot vehicle, even for a short period of time.
SCHOOL YEAR TO BEGIN TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF AND OTHER AREA COMMUNITIES

Ahead of the beginning of classes, KWOC News spoke with Poplar Bluff Superintendent Dr. Aaron Cornman about any nerves for the 1st day of school and bus safety.

“I guess if I had anything I was nervous about it’s just making sure all of our kids get to school safe. We don’t miss anyone, that parents are just patient and kind when it comes that first day of school because what it boils down to, a lot of parents want to walk their kids first day and you know we’ve started our preschool program and kindergarten program the same day, so it’s going to be a lot of traffic congestion. So just watching out for kids and people realizing that those big yellow Cadillac’s that deliver those kids every day, be careful you know they’re stopping for a reason, if they have those amber’s on it doesn’t mean speed up, it means you need to start thinking about slowing down. Just be cognizant of the kids that are getting on those buses, don’t pass a bus we’re all in a hurry, we want to get to work but just be mindful that someone’s life is on that bus, some parent put their kid on that bus and trusted them into our care and we just want to make sure they arrive safe. So, if I have any nervousness it is kids getting to school safe and just getting the year kicked off.”

Preparations are underway for the 32nd Annual Old Greenville Days.

Numerous schools around Southeast Missouri are set to return to classes today.
At least 25 area school districts will hold their first day of school today, including Bernie, Campbell, Clarkton, East Carter County, Greenville, Kennett, Naylor, Senath-Hornersville, Sacred Heart, Shady Grove State School, and Westwood Baptist Academy.
Three Rivers College will also be having the first day of classes for the Fall Semester today.
More area school districts will begin classes on Tuesday, including Twin Rivers, Clearwater, Sikeston, Van Buren, and Malden.
MOTORISTS ASKED TO WATCH FOR STUDENTS ON THE ROADWAYS
With students returning to school this week in Missouri, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to watch for students.
Drivers should expect a change in traffic patterns ─ school buses and parents taking their children to school and many young drivers will join other motorists on the road and affect the morning and afternoon commute. Also expect an increase in pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
Missouri law states that on a two-lane road, if a school bus is stopped and displaying warning signals while loading or unloading children, drivers must stop when meeting and following the bus.
However, it is only necessary to stop on a four-lane highway when following the bus.
Drivers, when you see a stopped school bus, stay alert and follow the law. Children may not be aware of traffic and dart unexpectedly into the roadway.
Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about riding a bus, walking, or driving to school in a safe manner. If they ride a bike, please make sure they wear a helmet and follow traffic laws.
9TH ANNUAL RIDE FOR A CURE TO BE HELD THIS WEEKEND
The 9th Annual Ride for a Cure Dice Run in memory of Larry Maronay has been scheduled this weekend.
Registration for the event will begin at 10 am on August 26th at the Dexter Elks Lodge, with the ride beginning at 11 am. The entry fee is $20 per bike and $10 for an additional rider with a meal included at the end of the ride.

BRAGG CITY MAN KILLED IN DUNKLIN COUNTY WRECK
A crash in Dunklin County has left one person dead.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 43 year old Brian James, of Bragg City, was driving on Missouri Highway 25, when his vehicle struck another vehicle in the rear.
The wreck occurred Thursday evening, shortly before 9 pm.
James was transported to Pemiscot Memorial Hospital in Hayti, where he was pronounced dead.

We are a week away from the official start of the high school football season in Southeast Missouri which means it is time for the annual jamboree.

EXCESSIVE HEAT TO RETURN TO THE AREA EARLY NEXT WEEK
Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas residents are being encouraged to prepare for oppressive heat that will blanket the area starting next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, an Excessive Heat Watch is in effect from Sunday through Wednesday, as dangerously hot conditions are expected with heat index values of 105 to 110 degrees possible. Highs are also forecast to get into the mid 90’s.
Officials say that everyone should be prepared to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
HIGHWAY PATROL SEEKING APPLICANTS FOR 119TH AND 120TH RECRUIT CLASSES
The Missouri State Highway Patrol is seeking applicants for its new recruit classes.
Officials say that the 119th Accelerated and 120th traditional recruit classes will report to the Patrol's Law Enforcement Academy on January 2nd, 2024.
The selection process is a multi-phase testing procedure including: written examination, a physical fitness for duty assessment, polygraph examination, background investigation, and oral interview board.
To be eligible, candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent and be 21 years of age upon graduating from the Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy.

DUCK BLIND DRAWING COMING UP THIS WEEKEND AT WAPPAPELLO LAKE
The annual duck blind drawing at Wappapello Lake is coming up this weekend.
According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers the drawing and registration will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, at the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitors Center.
The registration fee is $15 and applicants must bring cash, a personal check, or money order.
Permitted duck blinds may be placed on the lake after Labor Day and must be removed from the lake, or transferred to a permitted storage cove, within two weeks of the closure of the zoned duck season.

Authorities in Clay County Arkansas, are searching for two missing teen girls.
According to the Piggott Police Department, a search is underway for 17 year old Elizabeth Luter and 14 year old Erica Luter, who was last seen at a residence on 16th Avenue in Piggott, at around 6 pm on August 7th.

AREA LAW ENFORCEMENT TO PARTICIPATE IN DRIVE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER CAMPAIGN
Area law enforcement agencies are reminding everyone to not drink and drive while celebrating Labor Day.
Law enforcement agencies across Missouri and Arkansas are participating in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement period from August 18th through September 4th.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 13,384 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2021 that involved an alcohol-impaired driver.
On average, more than 11,000 people were killed each year from 2017 to 2021 in drunk driving crashes.

STODDARD COUNTY ROAD TO BE CLOSED BOTH TODAY AND TOMORROW FOR CULVERT REPLACEMENT
Westbound Route 60 in Stoddard County will be reduced today as contractor crews perform roadside work.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of roadway being reduced is located from Route F to County Road 485 near Dudley.
Weather permitting, work will take place today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
WOMAN FLOWN TO MEMPHIS HOSPITAL FOLLOWING CRASH NEAR NEW MADRID
An area woman was badly hurt in a single vehicle crash near New Madrid.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 71 year old Teresa Farrenburg, was driving on New Madrid County Road 707, when her vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned.
Farrenburg suffered serious injuries in the crash and was flown to a Memphis hospital.
POCAHONTAS AND PIGGOTT AMONG SCHOOLS BEGINNING CLASSES TODAY
At least two more schools in Northeast Arkansas will be starting their school year today.
The Pocahontas and Piggott School Districts are both set to begin classes this morning.
Most schools in Southeast Missouri will be welcoming kids back beginning next week, with Monday seeing at least 26 schools opening their doors, including Poplar Bluff, Greenville, and Kennett.
OPEN HOUSES TO BE HELD THIS WEEK IN THE TWIN RIVERS SCHOOL DISTRICT
The Twin Rivers School District will be holding multiple open houses tomorrow.
According to school officials, the back to school open houses have been scheduled for Thursday at both the Fisk and Qulin campuses.
Freshman Orientation will also be held tomorrow at Twin Rivers High School beginning at 7 pm.

DEXTER POLICE SEEKING WHEREABOUTS OF WANTED MAN
Police in Dexter are seeking the whereabouts of a wanted man.
According to the Dexter Police Department, Chris Smith is wanted for an incident that occurred over the weekend.
Smith is described as a black male, six feet tall, weighing 200 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
Officials say he has an active arrest warrant and should be considered dangerous. We have a picture of Smith available on our Facebook page.

CULVERT REPLACEMENT TO CAUSE CLOSURE OF CARTER COUNTY ROAD
Route J in Carter County will be closed over two days so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can replace a culvert under the roadway.
The closure is located from Pine Knot Road to County Road 175.
Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. both today and tomorrow.
$2.8 MILLION LOTTERY TICKET SOLD IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
Southeast Missouri Powerball players should be checking their tickets.
According to the Missouri Lottery, a $2.8 million lottery ticket was recently sold in Cape Girardeau.
Officials say the ticket was sold on Saturday August 12, at Phillips 66 on Williams Street, and the winner will have until February 8, 2024, to come forward and collect the prize.
The jackpot resets to $1 million and the next drawing is tomorrow.
LILBOURN MAN FACING FELONY COCAINE CHARGE
A Lilbourn man is facing a felony drug charge following his arrest over the weekend.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 64 year old Pervis Boyd was arrested in New Madrid County on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – crack cocaine.
Boyd is also facing a misdemeanor charge of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia and was transported to the New Madrid County Jail following the arrest.

The work zone will be located in Campbell between County Road 206 and Allen Road.

Summer is winding down, which means it’s time for students in Northeast Arkansas to return to class.
Many schools in Northeast Arkansas will be holding their first day of classes today, including Corning, Greene County Tech, Paragould, and Rector.
Hoxie is one of the few Northeast Arkansas schools in our listening area that will be starting their fall semester tomorrow.

MOTORISTS ASKED TO WATCH FOR STUDENTS ON THE ROADWAYS
With students returning to school soon, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to watch for students.
Drivers should expect a change in traffic patterns ─ school buses and parents taking their children to school and many young drivers will join other motorists on the road and affect the morning and afternoon commute. Also expect an increase in pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
Missouri law states that on a two-lane road, if a school bus is stopped and displaying warning signals while loading or unloading children, drivers must stop when meeting and following the bus. However, it is only necessary to stop on a four-lane highway when following the bus.
Drivers, when you see a stopped school bus, stay alert and follow the law. Children may not be aware of traffic and dart unexpectedly into the roadway.
Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about riding a bus, walking, or driving to school in a safe manner. If they ride a bike, please make sure they wear a helmet and follow traffic laws.
DATES SET FOR OPEN HOUSE AND ORIENTATIONS IN THE POPLAR BLUFF R-1 SCHOOL DISTRICT
Parents in Poplar Bluff will have the opportunity to learn more about the schools their children will be attending this fall during a series of open houses scheduled for this week.
Open houses will be held for the Kindergarten, 5th, 6th, and 7th grades on Tuesday, August 15th. The 8th Grade Orientation will also be held on the 15th
The four elementary schools will be holding their Open Houses on Wednesday, August 16th.
On Thursday, August 17th, there will be the 4th grade and Poplar Bluff Technical Center Open Houses.
For Poplar Bluff High School, freshman orientation is set for August 16th, with the High School Open House following on August 17th.
Early Childhood Meet the teacher visits are scheduled for August 15th through the 18th.
The first day of school has been scheduled for Monday, August 21st.

Route W in Ripley County will be closed this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform core drilling operations.
This work zone is located from Route H to the end of state maintenance near Naylor.
Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. daily. During the project, the road will be open to local traffic only.
