POPLAR BLUFF’S DARIUS GRAHAM TAKES STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND SETS NEW CLASS 5 RECORD FOR HIGH JUMP

The MSHSAA Class 5 state track meet turned into a record breaking day for one Poplar Bluff Student.

The Mules Darius Graham won the state championship in the High Jump, setting a new class 5 record of 2.09 meters.

Graham also earned all-state designation, as did Poplar Bluff’s Isaiah Nevel, A’tari Amos, and Kennedy Zgaynor.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING

One person is dead following an officer involved shooting in the Missouri Bootheel.

Kennett Police Chief Kenny Wilson tells KWOC News that two subjects fled from a Kennett Police officer shortly after 10:30 pm Sunday night.

Wilson says that one subject was shot by a Kennett officer following a physical altercation.

The subject, identified as 46 year old James Matthew Hooten, did not survive his injuries.

Wilson says that no further details are being released at this time and an investigation is being conducted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

DONIPHAN MAN DIES AFTER BEING STRUCK BY A VEHICLE

A Doniphan man has died after getting hit by a vehicle.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 56 year old Danny Caudill was struck by a vehicle on U Highway, three miles south of Doniphan.

Officials say that the incident occurred Friday night at around 8:30 pm.

Caudill was pronounced dead at the scene by Ripley County Coroner Mike Jackson.

MAN FACING POSSIBLE LIFE SENTENCE FOR FATAL SHOOTING

Officials say that a murder trial that was originally scheduled to begin today will not be going forward.

According to Dunklin County Prosecuting Attorney Nicholas Jain, 38 year old Steven Kirkwood, of Malden, has pleaded guilty to a charge of murder in the second degree.

The charge stems from the August 2020 shooting of Ryan Lehnig at a party in Malden.

Jain says that Kirkwood faces up to life in prison at his sentencing on July 12th.

WARRANT SERVED FOR DEXTER MAN ON RAPE AND SODOMY CHARGES

A Dexter man will appear in court next month on rape and sodomy charges.

According to the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Department, a warrant was served last week for 18 year old Peyton Jarrell for two counts of rape or attempted rape - 1st degree, three counts of sodomy or attempted sodomy - 1st degree, four counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, and two counts of possession of child pornography.

His bond was set at $25,000 cash only.

According to Missouri Case Net, Jarrell is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, June 15th.

PAVEMENT REPAIR PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY IN BUTLER COUNTY

Route 158 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from County Road 343 to Route 142 near Poplar Bluff.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday, June 1st, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

ALMOST TWO HUNDRED FLAGS ON DISPLAY AT POPLAR BLUFF MUSEUM TO HONOR LOCAL FALLEN SOLDIERS

Almost two hundred American flags are on display at the Poplar Bluff museum to honor our local fallen soldiers.

Kati Ray with the Museum tells KWOC news that the 199 flags represent each person from Butler County killed in action during World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam War.

They will be on display on the lawn of the Museum until after Memorial Day.

Ray added that the museum’s Kanell Hall is dedicated to honoring the sacrifice of those who served our country and that the museum is open on Sundays from 1 to 4 pm.

On Monday, a Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at the Veterans Wall at the Black River Coliseum beginning at 11 am.

POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION TO BE HELD TONIGHT

The Poplar Bluff High School Class of 2023 will be receiving their diplomas tonight.

The PBHS Graduation Ceremony will be held this evening at 7 pm at the Black River Coliseum. Doors will open at 6 pm and only people with tickets will be admitted.

Officials say that no admittance will be permitted after 7 pm.

For those who cannot attend, a live stream of the graduation ceremony will be available on the Mules Media youtube page.

MOTORISTS ASKED TO USE CAUTION IN THE AREA OF THE 100 MILE YARD SALE

Traffic is once again a concern as the annual 100 mile yard sale kicks off in Southeast Missouri.

The Memorial Day weekend event begins in Kennett and runs along Route 25 all the way to Jackson.

Motorists should remember that there is more traffic and more congestion along Route 25 this weekend than any other and drivers should be alert and look for pedestrian traffic.

HIGHWAY PATROL ENCOURAGES DRIVERS TO HAVE A SAFE HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Memorial Day weekend is upon us and the Missouri State Highway Patrol wants the public to make safety a priority.

Officials tell KWOC News that every available trooper will be on the road enforcing traffic laws and assisting motorists during the long holiday weekend.

Troopers will focus their attention on hazardous moving violations, speed violations, and impaired drivers.

Over the 2022 Memorial Day holiday weekend, 13 people died and 507 were injured in 1,043 traffic crashes.

Motorists or boaters in need of assistance or who want to report a crime can use the Highway Patrol's Emergency Assistance number at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone.

US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS ENCOURAGES WATER SAFETY

Residents from across Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas are heading to area lakes and rivers this weekend for Memorial Day and officials are reminding everyone to be safe.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake is reminding visitors of the importance of practicing safe, sensible, and thoughtful activities in, on, and around open water.

One of the most important things you can do is remember to wear a life jacket.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, during the 2022 Memorial Day weekend, there were nine boating crashes which included one fatality and four injuries. Last year, troopers made 131 driving while intoxicated and seven boating while intoxicated arrests.

POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL SOPHOMORE SELECTED TO ATTEND MISSOURI FINE ARTS ACADEMY

A Poplar Bluff High School sophomore will be attending a prestigious academy this summer.

According to school officials, Virginiagrace Vandewarker has been selected to participate in the Missouri Fine Arts Academy.

She is the only student from this region among 100 total across the state to attend the two-week residential program through the Reynolds College of Arts and Letters at Missouri State University in Springfield.

Participating in the vocal music area of study, Vandewarker wrote in an essay included in her portfolio, along with an audition video, about how the performing arts have helped her stay connected through the pandemic and during a move across the country.

Officials say that Vandewarker is the first qualifying student from Poplar Bluff High School in several years.

MISSOURI STATE TROOPER INJURED IN STODDARD COUNTY CRASH

A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper was injured in a two vehicle crash in Stoddard County.

According to the Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a vehicle pulled into the path of the Patrol vehicle on Highway 25 in the Dexter area.

The trooper suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a Dexter hospital. The driver of the other vehicle received minor injuries and refused medical treatment.

POPLAR BLUFF EARLY CHILDHOOD SCREENING SET FOR NEXT WEEK

The Poplar Bluff Early Childhood Center will soon host its final screening for the 2023/24 school year.

According to school officials, the final screening day will take place on Wednesday, May 31st at the 1202 Camp Road Campus.

To be eligible, children must be between the ages of three and five on July 31st, 2023.

FARM TRACTOR HIT ON BUTLER COUNTY ROADWAY, ONE INJURED

One person was injured after striking a farm tractor on a Butler County roadway.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 76 year old Carol Lawrence, of Broseley, was driving one mile west of Elk on Route CC when she struck the back of the farm equipment.

Lawrence’s vehicle was totaled and she received moderate injuries. She was taken to a Dexter hospital for treatment.

The farm equipment received moderate damage and its driver was uninjured.

PB CHRISTIAN SOCCER CAMP TO BE HELD AT BLACK RIVER SOCCER COMPLEX

The 10th Annual PB Christian Soccer Camp will be held this weekend at the Black River Soccer Complex in Poplar Bluff.

The camp is for students from kindergarten to high school and no experience is necessary. The registration fee is $65 and the camp will be held over three days from May 26th to May 28th.

Each participant will receive a shirt, water bottle, and soccer ball. Lunch will also be provided daily.

MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION OFFERING FREE MUSHROOM HUNTING CLASS

Perspective mushroom hunters will have the opportunity to learn more about finding morels this weekend.

The Missouri Department of Conservation’s free online virtual Mushroom Hunting 101 class is being offered from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, on the MDC website.

An MDC naturalist will discuss what it takes to go mushroom hunting, where to go, and which mushrooms to look for that can be served up on a dinner plate.

The class is open to participants ages 12 and older. Officials say that registration is required and you can register at mdc.mo.gov.

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN REPORTED MISSING

A Poplar Bluff woman has been reported missing.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, 30 year old Aimee Ross was last seen in the early morning hours of May 12th.

Ross is described as a white female, four feet, 11 inches tall, weighing 105 pounds, with red hair and brown eyes.

GREENVILLE MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN MOTORCYCLE WRECK

A Greenville man was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash Sunday night in Wayne County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 22 year old Coby Durrow was driving the motorcycle on Southbound Highway 67 when the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned.

Durrow suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was transported by ambulance to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

MDC PROPOSES ADJUSTING HUNTING AND FISHING PERMIT PRICES

The Missouri Department of Conservation has announced a proposal for adjusting prices for most hunting, fishing, trapping, and commercial permits.

MDC Director Sara Parker Pauley says that on average, most resident hunting and fishing permit prices would be adjusted by about one dollar.

The MDC says that most permit prices have remained the same for the past 20 years while costs for goods and services have increased significantly since then.

The MDC received initial approval on the proposed permit price adjustments from the Missouri Conservation Commission at the Commission’s May 19th open meeting.

Officials added that additional revenue from permit sales will help the MDC maintain and improve its nationally recognized programs and services for hunters, anglers, wildlife watchers, and others.

Public comments will be accepted about the proposed adjustments on mdc.mo.gov.

The MDC will then compile comments received and share them with the Commission prior to the September 8th Commission open meeting when it will give final consideration to the proposed permit price adjustments. If approved, the changes would become effective February 29th of next year.

ANNUAL DEXTER GRILLE IT UP SCHEDULED FOR EARLY JULY

Multiple attractions are scheduled for the 7th Annual Dexter Grille It Up in early July.

The two day event will begin at 5 pm on July 7th and at 8 am on July 8th at East Park in Dexter.

There will be a car show, mud volleyball tournament, cornhole tournament, and cook off contest, along with numerous vendors and live music, among other attractions.

Route NN in Ripley County will be closed this week so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform pavement repairs.

Officials say that the section of Route NN being closed is located from Route 21 to the end of state maintenance.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. During the project, the route will be open to local traffic only.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE TO CAUSE DELAYS THIS WEEK ON INTERSTATE 55

Southbound Interstate 55 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane with a 14-foot width restriction this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.

The work zone will be located between Exit 52 and Exit 49.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily through Thursday.

NEW COACH HIRED FOR TWIN RIVERS GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM

A new coach has been selected for the Twin Rivers High School Girls Basketball team.

Twin Rivers Superintendent Rob Brown tells KWOC News that Michael Snider was hired by the Board of Education during Thursday night’s meeting.

Snider has served as the Holcomb High School Boys Basketball coach since 2019 and Baseball coach since 2021.

Brown says that Snider is a Twin Rivers Alumni who will be a great hire for the district. Brown added that he has known Snider since his time at Twin Rivers and he will be a fresh voice for the program.

DAVID CROCKETT ACCEPTS NEELYVILLE BASEBALL COACH POSITION

The Neelyville Board of Education has approved the hiring of a new head coach for the High School baseball team.

Board members finalized the hiring of David Crockett Thursday night, during the school board meeting.

Crockett comes to Neelyville from Twin Rivers, where he served as the girls head basketball coach from 2019 through 2023. Under his leadership, the Lady Royals won multiple district championships and in 2021 reached the state quarterfinals. He has also previously coached baseball at the high school level.

Crockett was a two sport collegiate player for basketball and baseball at Bethel College in Tennessee. Crockett says he is excited about this new opportunity and looks forward to working in the district.

Neelyville Superintendent Heather Black tells KWOC News, “We are pleased to have the opportunity to hire David Crockett and confident that he will be a great addition to the tiger family.”

CYCLIST STRUCK BY A VEHICLE IN POPLAR BLUFF

A cyclist was reportedly struck by a vehicle Thursday evening in Poplar Bluff.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, shortly before 6 pm officers responded to an injury accident on Highway 53 at County Road 307.

A motorist told officers that a bicyclist had crossed the highway and into the path of her vehicle.

The cyclist was injured and flown from the scene by helicopter.

The name of the cyclist or the extent of their injuries were not released.

SEAT BELT ENFORCEMENT CAMPAIGN TO START TODAY IN MISSOURI

A new seat belt enforcement campaign is set to begin today in Missouri and Arkansas.

According to Dexter Police Chief Hank Trout, Dexter Police will be joining with statewide law enforcement through June 4th for a statewide “Click It or Ticket” mobilization to step up enforcement on Missouri’s seat belt law.

More than 5 out of 10 people killed in 2022 Missouri traffic crashes were not wearing a seat belt.

The Arkansas State Police have confirmed that they will also be participating in the crackdown on motorists not buckling up.

BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TODAY NEAR MALDEN

Route 142 in Butler County will be closed beginning today as contractor crews replace the bridge over Cane Creek Ditch.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation the section of Route 142 being closed is located between County Roads 267 and 261 near Neelyville.

Weather permitting, work will begin today with completion anticipated by Thursday, August 17th. Work will take place each day from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

PIEDMONT MAN KILLED IN ARKANSAS WRECK

A Piedmont man has died following a single vehicle wreck Wednesday night.

According to the Arkansas State Police, 34 year old Nathan Spears was driving on State Highway 367, in Jackson County, when his vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway and traveled into a ditch. The vehicle overturned multiple times in the wreck.

Officials say that Spears was killed in the crash. A passenger in the vehicle was injured and transported to an area hospital.

NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK STARTS ON SATURDAY

National Safe Boating week starts on Saturday and Missouri officials are taking the opportunity to stress the importance of safety while on the waterways.

Colonel Eric Olson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, tells KWOC News that National Safe Boating week is purposefully scheduled just prior to Memorial Day weekend, which many people consider the kickoff to the boating season.

Boaters are encouraged to arrange for a thorough inspection of your boat prior to taking it out on the water.

The Patrol’s marine operations troopers are available to inspect the required equipment on your boat, at your request, to make sure you’re in compliance with state law.

On Saturday, Troopers will be set up at the Redman Recreational Area Boat Ramp in Wappapello from 9 to 11 am to conduct inspections.

TWO STOLEN VEHICLES RECOVERED IN POPLAR BLUFF

Officers recently recovered two stolen vehicles in Poplar Bluff.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, Wednesday afternoon, officers responded to a silver Hyundai passenger vehicle that was found abandoned at the scene of an accident. An investigation revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen from Charleston.

While searching the area, officers also found a silver Chrysler van in a ditch on County Road 607. That vehicle had also been reported stolen from an address in Poplar Bluff.

Witnesses reported that the two vehicles had been traveling on Ashcroft Road at high speeds.

The Hyundai tried to pass the Chrysler van, lost control, and struck two parked vehicles.

The occupants of the Hyundai then fled the scene on foot. No information has been released on any possible arrests in connection to the stolen vehicles.

MISSOURI SQUIRREL AND BLACK BASS SEASONS TO BEGIN ON MAY 27TH

Missouri squirrel and black bass seasons are set to begin at the end of this month.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, the hunting season on eastern gray and fox squirrels runs from May 27th through February 15th of next year.

Allowed methods include shotguns, rifles, and other legal firearm methods, as well as archery. Squirrels may also be harvested with cage-style traps during the hunting season as long as hunters have a valid Small Game Hunting permit.

The daily limit for hunting, including the use of cage-style traps, is ten and the possession limit is 20. Hunters must have a permit valid for hunting small game or be exempt.

Anglers may catch-and-keep black bass, such as largemouth, smallmouth, spotted and Kentucky bass, from May 27 through February 29th of next year. Black bass can be found statewide but have a closed season part of the year in most streams south of the Missouri River.

In most state waters, the daily limit on black bass is six. Fish taken from most rivers and streams must be 12-inches long. Additional regulations may apply to specific waters or areas. Anglers must have a valid fishing permit or be exempt.

JUNIOR TENNIS CLINIC TO BE HELD THIS SUMMER IN POPLAR BLUFF

Registration is underway for a tennis clinic in Poplar Bluff.

The Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation Junior Tennis Program’s USTA Tennis Clinic is scheduled for various dates in the month of June and is for boys and girls in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Officials say that the fee is $20 along with a can of unopened PENN or WILSON tennis balls to be turned in on the first day of the clinic.

The deadline to register is Friday, June 2nd.

THREE MONTH LONG BRIDGE REPLACEMENT BEGINS TODAY IN WAYNE COUNTY

Route FF in Wayne County will be closed for almost three months as contractor crews replace the bridge over Rings Creek.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route FF will be closed between Route U and County Road 332 near Patterson.

Weather permitting, work will begin today with completion anticipated by Friday, August 17th. Officials say that work will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

HOLCOMB MAN KILLED IN DUNKLIN COUNTY WRECK

A crash in Dunklin County has left one person dead.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the crash occurred Wednesday morning when a vehicle driven by 50 year old Shane Hillhouse, of Kennett, failed to yield to another vehicle at the intersection of US Highway 412 and Highway NN.

The driver of the second vehicle, 57 year old Kevin Nelson, of Holcomb, was transported to a Pemiscot County hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Hillhouse suffered moderate injuries and was also transported to a Pemiscot County Hospital.

CLAY COUNTY DETENTION CENTER TO OPEN NEXT WEEK

A Northeast Arkansas jail will be opening next week.

According to Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole, the Sheriff’s Department has been authorized to open the Clay County Detention Center on Monday, May 22nd.

Cole says that staffing problems and lack of maintenance had forced the closure of the jail since October 2021. The facility has been completely renovated and it is anticipated that all inmates will have been moved back to the jail by Monday evening.

The opening of the jail will also mark the end of the warrant amnesty program.

Cole says that anyone having a Clay County misdemeanor warrant for unpaid fines in District Court can currently turn themselves in to the Sheriff’s Department.

The warrant will be served and you will be released and given a court date to appear in front of the Judge to get your payment plan redone.

Starting Monday, if you have a warrant for unpaid fines in Clay County, you will be taken to jail and have to post bond.

NAYLOR MAN FACING METH CHARGE

A Naylor man has been taken into custody on a drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 48 year old Walter Anders was recently arrested on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine.

Anders, who also reportedly had a felony Butler County warrant for possession of a controlled substance, was held in the Butler County Jail.

CITY COUNCIL APPROVES RATE HIKES FOR SEWER AND WATER IN POPLAR BLUFF

Water and sewer rates will be going up for citizens in Poplar Bluff.

During the regular City Council meeting Monday night, the council approved rate increases for Municipal Utilities.

According to information supplied by Municipal Utilities, the average water user will see an increase of $2.79 per month for 2023. The proposed rate track will have the water rate per 1,000 gallons go from the current $2.88 to $3.84 in 2027.

The average sewer customer will see an increase of $1.36 per month for 2023. The proposed rate track will result in the sewer rate per 1,000 gallons going from the current $3.00 to $3.40 in 2027.

In 2008, citizens passed a bond issue to secure monies from the State Revolving Fund for Water Treatment Improvement Projects. Municipal Utilities General Manager William Bach had previously informed the Council that the bond requires the city to make sure that rates will continually cover all expenses as well as other obligations.

The City Council also approved a bid from Summit Commercial Roofing for the roof restoration project for Fire Station Number 3.

FORMER POPLAR BLUFF AREA POSTAL WORKER SENTENCED FOR STEALING MAIL

A former postal worker from the Poplar Bluff area has been sentenced for stealing mail.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 29 year old Brittney Bulliner, was caught in a sting stealing Walmart gift cards and a gift card for Kohl’s and admitted stealing and rifling through 17 greeting cards two days before she was confronted.

The investigation began after postal customers in the Poplar Bluff area began complaining in April 2022 about mail that was missing contents. In August, Bulliner was identified as a possible suspect. She was a sales and service distribution clerk at the time.

The investigation identified at least 45 Postal Service customers who were missing mail taken by Bulliner.

She was indicted by a federal grand jury in October on two counts of theft of mail and pleaded guilty to both charges in February.

On Tuesday, Bulliner was sentenced to probation and ordered to pay restitution.

WOMAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN CONNECTION TO STOLEN VEHICLE

A Poplar Bluff woman has been taken into custody for allegedly stealing a vehicle.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, shortly after 3 pm Monday a woman reported that her car had been stolen from an area parking lot.

Officials say that the vehicle was recovered at 11:30 pm Monday night after it was involved in a motor vehicle accident.

21 year old Alisha Keirns was taken into custody at the scene.

Keirns was booked into the Butler County Jail on charges of stealing a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident.

ONE DEAD, TWO INJURED, FOLLOWING TWO VEHICLE CRASH ON INTERSTATE 55

A New Madrid woman has died following a two vehicle crash on Interstate 55.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred Monday evening, three miles south of Matthews, when a vehicle driven by 27 year old Erin Pipkin struck the rear of another vehicle.

Pipkin was pronounced dead at the scene by New Madrid County Coroner George Delisle.

A nine year old passenger in Pipkin’s vehicle was flown to a Memphis hospital with moderate injuries. An adult passenger also suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

HEAVY RAINS RESULT IN DAMAGE TO PIEDMONT AREA ROAD

A road in the Piedmont area was heavily damaged by storms Monday night and Tuesday morning.

The Piedmont Police Department is reporting that a road going into the MeadowBrook subdivision was washed out.

A large culvert has been exposed with portions of the road missing.

Police officials are urging motorists to stay out of the area.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN SENTENCED ON GUN AND DRUG CHARGES

A southeast Missouri man will be spending multiple years behind bars for gun and drug offenses.

Officials with the the United States Attorney's Office tell KWOC News that 40 year old Steven Chunn, of Kennett, was sentenced Tuesday to serve a total aggregate sentence of 120 months in federal prison for the charges of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

At a guilty plea hearing in February, Chunn admitted that he was found to be in possession of 59 grams of methamphetamine and a semi-automatic pistol following a traffic stop in Portageville.

Chunn further admitted he possessed the methamphetamine for distribution and the firearm was for protection of the drugs and money obtained from drug sales.

At the time of his arrest, Chunn had an active warrant for a parole violation on a felony drug case out of New Madrid County. The judge ordered Chunn’s federal sentence to run consecutive to his state case.

SIGNAGE WORK TO CAUSE DELAYS ON INTERSTATE 55

Northbound Interstate 55 in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform signage work. 

The section of Interstate 55 being reduced is located from mile marker 17 to mile marker 20 near Hayti.

Weather permitting, work will take place both today and tomorrow from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

DETAILS RELEASED ABOUT FATAL TWO VEHICLE CRASH IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Officials have released the name of a person killed in a two vehicle crash over the weekend.

According to the Arkansas State Police, the wreck occurred Saturday evening when 48 year old Dawn Eaton, of Paragould, drove through a stop sign and into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

The crash was located at the intersection of Walcott Road and the US Highway 412 Bypass in Paragould.

Officials say that Eaton was killed in the wreck. Two people in the second vehicle were injured and transported to an area hospital.

HEALTH FAIR SET FOR WEDNESDAY IN VAN BUREN

Southern Care and Comfort in Home Agency and Veteran Services will be hosting a health fair this week in Van Buren.

The fair has been scheduled for 11 am to 1 pm on Wednesday at the Van Buren Nutrition Center.

There will be information about behavioral health, medical equipment, hospice, and more for area seniors. Attendees can also get immunizations and their blood pressure checked.

POPLAR BLUFF WOMAN ARRESTED ON FELONY METH CHARGE

Authorities in Dunklin County have arrested a Poplar Bluff woman on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 35 year old Ashlie Patty was arrested Monday morning on a felony charge of possession of methamphetamine.

Patty also reportedly had multiple warrants out of Butler County.

Following the arrest, she was held at the Dunlin County Jail.

POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL OFFICIALS REMIND PARENTS TO GET THEIR STUDENTS VACCINATED FOR NEXT SCHOOL YEAR

The Poplar Bluff school year is almost at its end, but school officials are preparing for next year.

A recent letter was released to parents reminding them to make sure that their children are properly immunized to go to school.

Children attending school must be immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella hepatitis B, meningitis, and varicella.

Parents of incoming 12th graders are also reminded that two doses of the Meningococcal vaccine are required, unless the first dose was administered to a student who was 16 years of age or older, in which case only one dose is required.

Incoming 12th graders must provide documentation verifying they received the vaccine to the school nurse before school starts in the fall. Parents are being urged to make these appointments now and not wait until right before the school year begins.

Incoming 12th graders are also recommended to receive two doses of the HPV vaccine and one dose of the Meningococcal B vaccine.

ROADSIDE WORK TO FORCE CLOSURE OF BUTLER COUNTY ROAD TODAY

Route O in Butler County will be closed for part of this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform roadside work.  

According to officials, the work zone is located from Route W near Poplar Bluff to U.S. Route 67.     

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.

CULVERT REPLACEMENT SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN WAYNE COUNTY

Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation will be replacing a culvert today at the entrance to Sam A. Baker Park.

Route 143 in Wayne County will be closed at the Park entrance while the project is underway.

MAN FACING ASSAULT AND WEAPON CHARGES FOLLOWING SHOOTING IN POPLAR BLUFF

One person is in custody in connection to a weekend shooting in Poplar Bluff.

Lieutenant Josh Stewart with the Poplar Bluff Police Department tells KWOC News, that the shooting occurred at around 10 pm Saturday night, in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter.

Stewart says the shooting was the result of a family dispute. One person received a non life threatening gunshot wound to the leg area. The victim was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital before being transferred to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

The suspect, identified as 39 year old Rodger Rice, of Poplar Bluff, is the brother of the victim.

Rice was lodged in the Butler County Justice Center on charges of assault 1st degree, armed criminal action, endangering the welfare of a child 1st degree, and unlawful use of a weapon.

The investigation is ongoing, pending the filing of formal charges by the Butler County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK LEAVES ONE DEAD IN WAYNE COUNTY

One person has died in connection to a single vehicle wreck in Wayne County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 29 year old Ethan West, of Annapolis, was driving on Missouri Highway 143 when his vehicle ran off the roadway, struck several trees, and overturned.

The wreck occurred Sunday morning, shortly after 1 am.

West was pronounced dead at the scene by Wayne County Coroner Mark Smith.

POPLAR BLUFF CITY COUNCIL TO VOTE ON WATER AND SEWER RATE INCREASES DURING MEETING TONIGHT

The Poplar Bluff City Council will be taking action on multiple proposed ordinances tonight during a regular meeting.

According to the agenda, the council will take action on separate ordinances for increases to the water and sewer rates for Municipal Utilities.

The City Council will also take action on an ordinance for accepting a bid for a roof restoration project for Poplar Bluff Fire Station Number 3.

The meeting is scheduled to begin tonight at 7 pm in the City Council Chambers on South 5th Street.

THIS WEEK IS NATIONAL POLICE WEEK

Police officers are in the spotlight this week for National Police Week.

National Police Week is dedicated to remembering and honoring those who gave their lives in the line of duty.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.

ST. LOUIS WOMAN IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING MULTI-COUNTY PURSUIT

A St. Louis woman is facing multiple charges following a multi-county pursuit in Southeast Missouri.

According to authorities, the pursuit began Thursday morning in Ripley County before coming to an end in Butler County on Business 60 at Route NN, east of Poplar Bluff.

The subject arrested has been identified as 30 year old Kimberly Worley, of St. Louis. She is facing charges of assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and resisting arrest by fleeing.

The vehicle was a rental box truck that had been reported stolen.

Officials say that at least one deputy was transported to an area hospital for precautionary reasons.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol, Doniphan Police Department, Butler County Sheriff’s Department, Ripley County Sheriff’s Department, and Poplar Bluff Police Department were all involved in the pursuit.

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING CRASH IN BUTLER COUNTY

One person has died following a crash Thursday in Butler County.

Butler County Coroner Jim Akers tells KWOC News that the two vehicle accident occurred on US Highway 60 at County Road 411.

The deceased has been identified as 80 year old Willis Smith, of Poplar Bluff.

A crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol says that crash occurred when Smith failed to yield to a freightliner at around noon on Thursday.

The driver of the freightliner suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

CLOTHING GIVEAWAY SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEKEND AT THE POPLAR BLUFF EAGLES

Poplar Bluff area residents will have the opportunity to get clothes this weekend at the Poplar Bluff Eagles on Ditch Road.

The Junior Eagles are hosting a clothing giveaway from 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday.

Officials say there will be both adult and kids clothing and there is a limit of three bags of clothes per person.

AREA LETTER CARRIERS TO COLLECT FOOD FOR LOCAL FOOD PANTRIES

Area letter carriers will soon be collecting food for local food pantries.

This weekend will mark the 31st anniversary of the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

On Saturday, letter carriers from across the area will be collecting non-perishable food donations. Residents just need to leave a non-perishable food donation in a bag by your mailbox on the day of the food drive.

The donations will go directly to local food pantries.

EAST CARTER SENIOR BETA TO HOST A CORNHOLE TOURNAMENT AND PAGEANT

The East Carter Senior Beta Club will be hosting a fundraising cornhole tournament and pageant this weekend.

The event will begin at noon on Saturday at the FEMA Field lower playground in Ellsinore, featuring carnival games, food, music, and face painting.

The cornhole tournament will begin at 4 pm, with each two person team having a $20 entry fee. The pageant will begin following the tournament and has a fee of $5 per entry.

If it rains, the event will move inside the FEMA building.

Proceeds from the event will go to paying for the trip to nationals for Beta Club students.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI COMMUNITY RECEIVES OVER $20,000 IN GRANT FUNDING FROM USDA

A Southeast Missouri community has received over $24,000 for public safety equipment.

U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development State Director for Missouri Kyle Wilkens tells KWOC News that the city of Portageville was approved for $24,500 in grant funding through USDA’s Community Facilities Direct Loan and Grant program.

Wilkens says that Portageville was having maintenance issues with their existing fleet of law enforcement vehicles due to high mileage.

Thanks to the grant, the city was able to purchase four new vehicles that will ensure local law enforcement is able to continue providing efficient public safety services while also keeping law enforcement providers safe en route.

TEEN REPORTEDLY DISTRIBUTED MARIJUANA BROWNIES TO SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MIDDLE SCHOOLERS

A teenager has been taken into custody after he reportedly distributed marijuana brownies to middle school students in Southeast Missouri.

On Tuesday, the Caruthersville School Resource Officer received a report that several students at Caruthersville Middle School may have been under the influence of narcotics.

Several students had admitted to eating “marijuana” brownies that were given to them by a 14 year old juvenile male student at the Middle School. The 14 year old student had purchased the brownies from a 17 year old male juvenile student of the High School.

When questioned, the 17 year old student admitted to making and selling the brownies.

He was placed into custody and sent to Juvenile Detention, pending filing of formal charges of delivery of a controlled substance, distribution of a controlled substance in a protected location and endangering the welfare of a child 1st degree. The 14 year old was placed on house arrest pending further investigation.

Officials say that six students were taken to an area hospital for routine treatment. At this time there were no serious effects to any of the students.

CORNING MAN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY FOLLOWING PURSUIT

A man was taken into custody earlier this week following a pursuit with area authorities.

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, a deputy observed a white pickup with a tail light out in Corning and tried to make a traffic stop. The pickup then took off, running numerous stop signs and reaching speeds of 60 to 70 miles per hour.

The subject eventually got stuck in the Corning Cemetery after the vehicle struck a concrete pole.

The driver, identified as 40 year old Miguel Davis, of Corning, was taken into custody. Officials say that Davis had a loaded AR15 and pistol, along with body armor, in the front seat of the vehicle. He also had a misdemeanor warrant for failure to appear out of Clay County.

Davis has been charged with felony fleeing, felony criminal mischief 1st degree, no proof of insurance, failure to stop at a stop sign, driving on a suspended driver license, defective vehicle equipment, and driving left of center.

INSPECTION TO BEGIN TODAY ON MISSISSIPPI RIVER BRIDGE

North and Southbound Interstate 155 in Pemiscot County will be reduced for over a week beginning today.

Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation tell KWOC News that the reduction is so construction crews can inspect the Mississippi River Bridge that crosses into Tennessee. 

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Friday, May 19th.

LAYOFF DATE ANNOUNCED FOR REVERE PLASTICS IN POPLAR BLUFF

Over 70 workers will be affected by layoffs this Summer at Revere Plastics Systems in Poplar Bluff.

The company told employees last week that the Poplar Bluff facility will be closing.

According to a WARN Notice posted on Jobs.Mo.Gov, the closing will affect 79 employees and the layoff date has been set for July 2nd.

WOMAN INJURED IN TWO SEPARATE CRASHES IN STODDARD COUNTY

A Northeast Arkansas woman was injured in two separate crashes early Tuesday morning in Stoddard County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the first crash occurred when a vehicle driven by 20 year old Shannon Henderson, of Charleston, reportedly failed to yield on US Highway 60 and collided with another vehicle.

Both Henderson and the driver of the second vehicle, 83 year old Elwanda Miller, of Piggott, suffered moderate injuries in the wreck.

While Miller’s vehicle was disabled in the roadway, it was then struck by a truck, causing Miller to suffer serious injuries. She was transported by ambulance to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

No injuries were listed for the driver of the truck.

9TH ANNUAL RIDE FOR A CURE TO BE HELD IN AUGUST

The 9th Annual Ride for a Cure Dice Run in memory of Larry Maronay has been scheduled for August.

Registration for the event will begin at 10 am on August 26th at the Dexter Elks Lodge, with the ride beginning at 11 am. The entry fee is $20 per bike and $10 for an additional rider with a meal included at the end of the ride.

All proceeds will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

OVER 41,000 BIRDS HARVESTED DURING SPRING TURKEY SEASON

Missouri hunters harvested over 41,000 birds during turkey season.

Preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation shows turkey hunters checked 41,970 birds during Missouri’s 2023 regular spring turkey season, which ran from April 17th through May 7th.

Young turkey hunters also harvested 2,566 turkeys over the youth weekend at the beginning of April, bringing the overall 2023 spring turkey harvest to 44,536 – the highest harvest total since 2016.

Officials say that last year, young turkey hunters harvested 2,894 turkeys over the spring youth season and hunters harvested 33,359 during the regular spring season for a 2022 spring season total harvest of 36,253.

MONDAY NIGHT STORMS RESULT IN DAMAGE ACROSS SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A late Monday night storm system resulted in reports of damage across Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service, a tree fell on a house in the Sikeston area. No information was available on if anyone was injured in the incident.

Officials in Stoddard County reported a downed tree was blocking a roadway in the Bloomfield area last night at around 10 pm.

Officials in Wayne County say that numerous trees were down across the county.

There were power outages reported in numerous communities overnight. Ozark Border Electric Cooperative reported that over 2,600 customers were without power at one point.

ALMOST 200 TONS OF DEBRIS COLLECTED FROM MARK TWAIN NATIONAL FOREST

Crews recently worked to remove almost 200 tons of trash from Mark Twain National Forest.

According to the US Forest Service, crews have successfully completed a debris cleanup contract that covered large sections of the Poplar Bluff and Eleven Point Ranger Districts.

This year, the debris clean-up led to 187 tons of trash being removed from the Forest.

Anyone who finds illegal dump sites on national forest land, or witnesses people dumping trash, is asked to notify the appropriate Forest Service district office.

WAYNE COUNTY HEALTH CENTER TO HOST WOMEN’S HEALTH DAY EVENT

An area health organization is preparing an event for Women’s Health Day later this month.

The Wayne County Health Center will be hosting the event, featuring mammograms, blood pressure, blood sugar, and hemoglobin checks, as well as vaccines.

Patients without insurance may qualify for free screenings.

The event will be held from 9 am to 3 pm on Thursday, May 18th. Officials say that walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are preferred.

DONIPHAN MAN FACING DRUG TRAFFICKING CHARGE FOLLOWING WEEKEND ARREST

A Doniphan man is facing multiple charges, including drug trafficking, following his arrest over the weekend.

Officials with the Scott City Police Department tell KWOC News that officers responded to a call of a suspicious male Saturday afternoon.

The male subject had allegedly displayed a firearm to a citizen while attempting to sell illegal narcotics.

The subject, identified as 19 year old Elijah Clayton, of Doniphan, was located near Shady Grove Park. Officers found Clayton to be in possession of a loaded pistol and approximately five grams of Fentanyl.

Clayton was taken into custody and formally charged with unlawful use of a weapon, trafficking drugs 1st degree, and possession of a controlled substance.

Officials say that Clayton was held on a no bond warrant.

PEDESTRIAN STRUCK BY A VEHICLE NEAR QULIN

A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle Saturday night near Qulin.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a vehicle hit 38 year old Juanita Brame, of Campbell, at approximately 9:50 pm Saturday night.

The incident occurred on Highway 53, two miles south of Qulin.

Brame suffered serious injuries and was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

OVER TWO POUNDS OF SUSPECTED METHAMPHETAMINE SEIZED IN KENNETT

Authorities have seized over two pounds of suspected methamphetamine in the Missouri Bootheel.

Kennett Police Chief Kenny Wilson tells KWOC News that on May 1st, the Police Department received information about methamphetamine containing Fentanyl being distributed in the Kennett area.

The KPD Street Crimes Unit was activated to begin an investigation and locate the suspected distributors. The KPD Special Response Team executed several search warrants last week, resulting in about 2.5 pounds of suspected methamphetamine being seized.

Wilson says that the Dunklin County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, the Dunklin County Sheriff’s Department, and the SEMO Drug Task Force assisted in the operations.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.

MAN FLOWN TO A MEMPHIS HOSPITAL AFTER BEING HIT BY A VEHICLE

A man was flown from the scene of an incident Saturday night near Kennett.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 41 year old Adam Loar, of Marmaduke, Arkansas, was walking on Missouri Highway 84 when he was struck by a vehicle.

Loar suffered serious injuries and was flown to a Memphis hospital.

MAN ACCUSED OF SEXUALLY ASSAULTING A WOMAN AT AN AREA BUSINESS

A man has been taken into custody for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman at an area business.

According to the Paragould Police Department, in February, a victim reported that a man had walked by her and grabbed her behind.

Police were able to identify the man as 44 year old Shane Phipps, of Paragould, through surveillance footage from the store.

An interview was conducted with Phipps last week, during which he made incriminating statements.

Phipps was held in the Greene County jail on the charge of 2nd degree sexual assault. His bond was set at $50,000.

INDUSTRIAL SITE DEVELOPMENT GRANTS AWARDED TO THREE SOUTHEAST MISSOURI COMMUNITIES

Three Southeast Missouri communities will be receiving grants for industrial sites.

Governor Mike Parson announced on Friday that the Missouri Department of Economic Development has awarded $75 million through the Industrial Site Development Grant Program for 15 projects across the state.

The program is focused on helping communities develop shovel-ready industrial sites to support business expansion and attraction.

In Southeast Missouri, the cities of New Madrid, Sikeston, and Scott City will each receive 2.5 million dollars in grant money.

The grants required local investment, and State grant funds could represent no more than 50 percent of total project cost.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP WINNING BASKETBALL COACH AND MISSOURI SPORTS HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE PASSES AWAY

A Missouri state championship winning basketball coach and member of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame has passed away.

Carroll Cookson died on May 1st at the age of 88.

Cookson coached in both Arkansas and Missouri, winning state championships in 1972 and 1975 while coaching in Advance.

He finished his illustrious career with over 524 wins and was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.

Visitation has been scheduled for 4:30 to 8 pm Friday at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance. The funeral service will follow at 3 pm on Saturday in the Advance High School Gymnasium.

MISSING CHILD OUT OF MADISON COUNTY FOUND SAFE

Updating a story we brought to you earlier this week, an Endangered Person Advisory for a missing newborn baby from Madison County has been canceled.

The advisory was issued last Friday night for less than two week old Kai Noel Joseph Gutierrez Nickel.

Officials say that the child was located safe in St. Louis County with his mother, 28 year old Sarah Jane Diggs.

Further details were not released.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN SENTENCED TO OVER FIVE YEARS IN PRISON FOR SELLING MACHINE GUNS

A Southeast Missouri man is set to spend over seven years in prison for selling machine guns.

A US District Judge sentenced 24 year old Lamad Cross, of Kennett, to five and a half years in prison for selling seven devices that convert AR-15 style rifles into fully automatic weapons. Cross pleaded guilty in January to one felony charge of unlawful transfer of a machine gun.

A confidential informant working with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives contacted Cross via social media and asked about buying a Glock switch. Cross instead offered a drop-in “auto sear” that converts an AR-15-style rifle into an automatic weapon.

Glock switches and auto sears, even if not installed in a firearm, are considered machine guns under federal law.

The judge ordered the sentence to run consecutive to any sentence Cross receives for violating his probation in a Dunklin County Circuit Court case. Cross pleaded guilty in 2021 in that case to resisting arrest by fleeing.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENTS TO TEAM UP FOR BLOOD DRIVE

The Poplar Bluff Police and Fire Departments are teaming up for a blood drive early next month.

The “Battle of the Badges” Poplar Bluff Community Blood Drive has been scheduled for 12:30 to 5:30 pm on Thursday, June 1st. The event will be held at the Poplar Bluff Police Department Multi-Use Room on Shelby Road.

CONTRACTS AWARDED FOR NUMEROUS ROAD PROJECTS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Multiple Southeast Missouri roadways will be getting improvements in the future.

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded contracts for Southeast District projects during its regular meeting this week.

An almost $500,000 contract was awarded for intersection improvements at various locations in Butler, Carter, Stoddard, and Wayne Counties.

An almost $900,000 contract was awarded for a culvert replacement on Route 142 over Mill Creek in Ripley County.

Over $581,0000 will go to erosion control repairs at various locations on Route 60 in Carter and Shannon counties.

Additional information, including timelines and impacts to traffic, will be released prior to the start of construction.

MODOT CREWS WORKING ON ROUTE 51 NEAR FISK

Route 51 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance. 

The work zone is located from Outer 60 to County Road 494 near Fisk.

REVERE PLASTICS SYSTEMS IN POPLAR BLUFF TO CLOSE

A Poplar Bluff factory will be closing down.

Revere Plastics Systems told employees on Wednesday that the Poplar Bluff facility will be closed.

An exact date for the closing of the facility was not available.

The Poplar Bluff facility worked on injection molding, shuttle molding, insert molding, and engineering according to the Revere Plastics Systems website.

MAN ARRESTED IN POPLAR BLUFF ON WARRANT FOR SEXUAL MISCONDUCT WITH A CHILD

A man has been taken into custody in Butler County on a warrant out of California.

According to reports from the Poplar Bluff Police Department, 22 year old Jacob Hayes, of St. Louis, was arrested late Tuesday night at an area business on a warrant for sexual misconduct with a child under 15 years of age.

There was no bond set on the warrant and Hayes was lodged in the Butler County Jail.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI NATIVE INDUCTED TO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME

A native of Southeast Missouri is now making her way to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame announced on Wednesday that Sheryl Crow was one of seven inductees in the performers category, joining Willie Nelson, George Michael, and Rage Against the Machine, among others.

Crow was born and raised in Kennett, graduating from Kennett High School before attending the University of Missouri.

During her career, she has won nine grammy awards, including Best Female Rock Vocal and Record of the Year for “All I Wanna Do.”

TWO POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS CLAIM STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AT FBLA CONFERENCE

Two Poplar Bluff Students won a state championship during the Future Business Leaders of American state conference last month.

Bralin Duckett and Emma Tinsley placed first in business management, competing against 44 teams from across Missouri.

The students were given a case study, had 20 minutes to prepare without the use of any outside resources, then were given seven minutes to present their solution to a panel of judges,

A total of 48 PBHS students qualified for the state competition.

ONE DEAD AFTER VEHICLE RUNS STOP SIGN IN PARAGOULD

A Northeast Arkansas man has died following a collision in Paragould.

According to the Arkansas State Police, the crash occurred Monday afternoon at the intersection of Cedar Lane and Bard Road when a vehicle ran a stop sign and collided with another vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle, identified as 36 year old Thomas Keck Jr, of Marmaduke, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the first vehicle was injured and transported to an area hospital.

POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS CONVERT USED TRUCK TO AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE

Students at the Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center have completed a multi-year project to convert an old vehicle to electric.

According to school officials, the automotive technology class at the PBTCC recently completed the electric vehicle conversion of a five-speed truck, a campus-wide project a couple of years in the works.

TCC Teacher Steven Layman acquired the conversion kit via a $7,500 Vocational-Technical Education Enhancement grant along with a $3,500 match from the district during the 2020/21 school year.

Because of shipment delays created by the global pandemic, it took until around Christmas break of this school year for the Chevrolet S-10 to be drivable, complete with seatbelts and license plates. Layman hopes to display the vehicle in car shows beginning this summer, as a way to promote the TCC.

CANADIAN MAN KILLED IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS MOTORCYCLE WRECK

A Canadian man died Monday from injuries he received in a motorcycle wreck.

Officials with the Arkansas State Police tell KWOC News that 41 year old Nathaniel Hunter, of Toronto, Canada, was driving the motorcycle on US Highway 67 in rural Lawrence County when the vehicle ran off the roadway and struck a cable barrier.

Officials say that Hunter was killed in the crash.

BUTLER COUNTY ROAD CLOSED FOR TODAY DUE TO CULVERT REPLACEMENT

Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation will be working in Butler County today on Route UU.

According to MoDOT, Route UU will be closed from 7 am to 4 pm while crews work to replace a culvert under the roadway.

Officials say that the work zone will be located between Route 53 and County Road 320 near Poplar Bluff.

SIGNAGE REPAIRS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

A section of southbound Route 25 in Stoddard County will be closed both today and tomorrow as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform signage repairs. 

The section of roadway to be closed is located from Frontage Road to Old Highway 25 near Dexter.

TWO BUTLER COUNTY SCHOOLS TO RECEIVE SIX-FIGURE SCHOOL SAFETY GRANTS

Two Butler County School Districts have been selected to receive six-figure grants from the state.

On Monday, Governor Mike Parson announced 169 school districts and charter schools have received grants from the newly created School Safety Grant Program.

The Twin Rivers R-10 School District was selected for an $150,000 grant, while Neelyville R-4 will receive a $100,000 grant.

The grant program aims to support school safety improvements, including physical security upgrades and associated technology in school facilities among other items.

BLACK RIVER COLISEUM POOL TO CLOSE FOR RENOVATIONS BEGINNING MAY 15TH

Renovations will force the temporary closure of a pool in Poplar Bluff.

According to officials with the Black River Coliseum, the Aquatic and Fitness Center will be closing down the pool for roof renovations beginning on May 15th.

During this time, they will not be having open swim, lap swim, or birthday parties.

No timetable was given for when the pool will reopen.

AREA LETTER CARRIERS TO COLLECT FOOD FOR LOCAL FOOD PANTRIES

Later this month, area letter carriers will be collecting food for local food pantries.

Saturday, May 13th will mark the 31st anniversary of the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

On May 13th, letter carriers from across the area will be collecting non-perishable food donations. Residents just need to leave a non-perishable food donation in a bag by your mailbox on the day of the food drive.

The donations will go directly to local food pantries.

FRIDAY IS THE DEADLINE TO PURCHASE TAGS FOR BULKY ITEM PICKUP

Friday is the final day for Poplar Bluff residents to purchase tags for this month’s Bulky Item Pickup.

Residents can purchase bulk item tags from the City Collector’s office at City Hall for $20. The tags entitles you to the removal of four bulk items, such as couches or refrigerators. Tires may be collected for a charge of $3 per tire with a limit of four tires.

No construction materials or small items will be picked up and the program is for residential areas only.

Friday is the final day to purchase item tags at City Hall to be included in next week’s pick up, which will be conducted on May 9th.

SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENT PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY ON HIGHWAY 53 IN POPLAR BLUFF

Route 53 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane beginning today so contractor crews can improve sidewalks in Poplar Bluff.

The work zone will be located between Westwood Boulevard and Fair Street.

Officials say the project is part of the Missouri Department of Transportation’s initiative to bring roadway facilities into compliance with the current standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Monday, May 16, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS THIS WEEK ON SOUTHBOUND INTERSTATE 55

Southbound Interstate 55 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane with a 14-foot width restriction this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge maintenance.

The work zone is located from Exit 52 to Exit 49.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

ENDANGERED PERSON ADVISORY ISSUED FOR MISSING BABY OUT OF FREDERICKTOWN

The Madison County Sheriff’s Department has issued an endangered person advisory for a missing newborn baby.

The advisory was issued Friday night for 8 day old Kai Noel Joseph Gutierrez Nickel, who was supposed to have been taken into protective custody.

Officials say that the baby’s biological mother, 28 year old Sarah Jane Diggs, is believed to have him and has not been located.

Diggs is described as a white female, five feet, four inches tall, weighing 200 pounds, with brown hair, and brown eyes.

ADVANCE MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN UTV WRECK

An Advance man was injured in a UTV crash over the weekend.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 24 year old Jordan Ulichney was driving the UTV on Bollinger County Road 740 when the vehicle ran off the roadway and struck a tree.

Ulichney was flown to a St. Louis hospital with serious injuries. A passenger on the vehicle received moderate injuries and was transported to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

CLAY COUNTY SHERIFF ANNOUNCES WARRANT AMNESTY PROGRAM

A Northeast Arkansas Sheriff has announced a warrant amnesty program.

According to Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole, anyone having a Clay County misdemeanor warrant for unpaid fines in District Court can come to the Sheriff’s Department and turn themselves in.

The warrant will be served and you will be released and given a court date to appear in front of the Judge to get your payment plan redone.

Cole says that once the jail opens if you have a warrant for unpaid fines, you will be taken to jail and have to post bond.

MDC TO OFFER BLACK BEAR HUNTING CLASS THIS EVENING

The Missouri Department of Conservation is offering a class this evening to go over the basics of black bear hunting.

Officials say the introductory class will teach participants about black bears and what it takes to have a successful bear hunt. Discussions will include black bear biology, the permit application process, and general hunting strategies.

The class will be held online from 6 to 8 pm tonight. Participants can register for the virtual program online at mdc.mo.gov.

REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY ON NORTH OUTER ROAD 60 IN BUTLER COUNTY

North Outer Road 60 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform edge rut repairs.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route W to the end of state maintenance in Poplar Bluff.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

BRIDGE MAINTENANCE PROJECT UNDERWAY NEAR DEXTER

Route 114 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane with a 12-foot width restriction this month as contractor crews perform bridge maintenance.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the bridge is located between County Roads 725 and 737 near Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through Friday, May 26th.

Officials say that North and Southbound Route 25 in Stoddard County will also be reduced to one lane today, as crews perform bridge maintenance from Frontage Road to Old Highway 25.

Work will be done on that project from 7 am to 1 pm today.
