TODAY IS THE FINAL DAY TO REGISTER TO VOTE FOR THE UPCOMING MUNICIPAL ELECTION

The Missouri General Municipal Election Day is less than a month away and you are running out of time to make sure you are registered to vote.

Butler County Clerk Donna Hillis tells KWOC News that today is the last day to register to vote for the April 4th election.

Citizens in Poplar Bluff and Butler County will both be voting on tax issues during the municipal election.

The Poplar Bluff proposition asks voters if the city of Poplar Bluff should impose a local use tax at the same rate as the total local sales tax rate. The Butler County sales tax issue asks if there should be a countywide sales tax of three percent on all tangible personal property retail sales of adult use marijuana sold in the county.

Poplar Bluff City Council Member Robert Smith is being challenged for his position as Ward 5 Councilman by Spencer Jones. There will also be elections for multiple area school boards.

Hillis says that her office will be open through 5 pm Today and her staff will also be available through the lunch break to help Butler County residents register to vote or check their registration status. Butler County residents can also call the Clerk’s Office at 573-686-8050 to check their registration status.

MISSOURI LAW THAT BANS POLICE FROM ENFORCING FEDERAL GUN LAWS FOUND UNCONSTITUTIONAL

A Missouri law banning local police from enforcing federal gun laws has been struck down as unconstitutional.

The law that was struck down by U.S. District Judge Brian Wimes on Tuesday forbade local police from enforcing federal gun laws that don't have an equivalent state law. Missouri’s legislature passed the law in 2021.

Federal laws without similar Missouri laws include statutes covering weapons registration and tracking, and possession of firearms by some domestic violence offenders.

The Justice Department, which last year sued to overturn the Missouri law, said the Missouri state crime lab, operated by the Highway Patrol, refused to process evidence that would help federal firearms prosecutions after the law took effect.

KWOC News spoke with Butler County Prosecuting Attorney Kacey Proctor who says that he hopes legislators will work with law enforcement agencies and prosecutors going forward to find ways to protect second amendment rights while also enabling law enforcement officials to work with federal agencies to keep communities safe.

TEENAGER SERIOUSLY INJURED IN UTV WRECK NEAR DONIPHAN

A teenager was seriously injured in a UTV crash Monday near Doniphan.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the 15 year old male, from Doniphan, was driving the UTV on Highway 142 when his vehicle crossed the center of the roadway and struck a pickup truck.

The teenager received serious injuries in the crash and was transported by ambulance to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries.

LAKE ROAD PRINCIPAL NAMED EXEMPLARY NEW PRINCIPAL BY MISSOURI ASSOCIATION OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPALS

A Poplar Bluff Elementary School principal has been recognized by her peers across the state.

Rondi Vaughn, who is in her third year leading Lake Road Elementary, has been named the Southeast Region’s 2023 Exemplary New Principal by the Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals.

In addition to taking the helm as principal at the peak of the public health crisis, Vaughn helped to complete Lake Road's phase-in plan to include grade six during the 2020/21 school year.

She was recognized on Monday during the annual MAESP Leadership Conference at Osage Beach.

Vaughn was nominated for the award by Eugene Field Principal Jennifer Taylor, who was a MAESP Distinguished Principal honoree last year.

WESTWOOD BAPTIST ACADEMY BASKETBALL TEAMS HONORED BY POPLAR BLUFF CITY COUNCIL

Two local basketball teams were recently celebrated by the Poplar Bluff City Council.

The Westwood Baptist Academy Boys and Girls basketball teams were each presented proclamations by Poplar Bluff Mayor Steve Davis during the City Council meeting Monday night.

The boys team was the Missouri Christian School Athletic Association division two champions for this school year. The girls team finished in fourth place during the state tournament.

BRIDGE REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Route 53 in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge repairs.

According to officials, the bridge is located between County Road 215 and County Road 211, near Campbell.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

MODOT CREWS TO BE WORKING THIS WEEK IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route AB in Stoddard County will be reduced this week so Missouri Department of Transportation crews can perform shoulder repairs.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route 25 to County Road 503 near Aquilla.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily through Friday.

OPEN ENROLLMENT SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK FOR POPLAR BLUFF KINDERGARTEN CENTER

Open Enrollment is scheduled for this week at the Poplar Bluff Kindergarten Center.

If you have a child who will be five years old by July 31st, you can get them enrolled for the next school year.

According to officials, open enrollment is set to take place from 9 am to 2 pm today through Thursday at the 1200 Camp Road campus. There will also be a session available from 4:30 to 7 pm on Thursday.

Parents should remember to bring their children’s birth certificate, social security card, proof of residency, and shot records.

PERSON RESCUED FROM PARTIALLY SUBMERGED VEHICLE IN POPLAR BLUFF

One person was rescued from a partially submerged vehicle in Poplar Bluff last week.

According to the Poplar Bluff Fire Department, crews respond to a vehicle accident Friday morning on G Street.

The vehicle had run into a ditch while trying to turn around and the occupant was still in the vehicle when crews arrived.

The person was not injured and a firefighter was able to get them out of the vehicle.

SCOTT CITY MAN FLOWN FROM THE SCENE OF A UTV WRECK IN WAYNE COUNTY

A Scott City man was flown from the scene of a UTV wreck over the weekend in Wayne County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 41 year old Curtis Dannenmueller was riding a UTV on private property near Silva when the vehicle overturned.

Dannenmueller suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a St. Louis hospital.

THREE WAPPAPELLO RESIDENTS ARRESTED IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Three Wappapello residents were taken into custody Sunday evening in Dunklin County on felony drug charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 38 year old Jesse Baxter, 18 year old Makenzie Mims, and 33 year old Adam Huff were each arrested on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine and a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Baxter is facing additional felony charges of unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm.

POPLAR BLUFF STREET TO BE CLOSED FOR STORM WATER SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS

Crews have closed a Poplar Bluff Street for an improvement project.

According to the Poplar Bluff Street Department, for the next few weeks, the 700 block of Cynthia Street will be closed except for local traffic.

The closure is so construction crews can make improvements to the storm water system in the block.

CITY WATER SYSTEM UPGRADES SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN DONIPHAN

Doniphan officials say that water system upgrades will be conducted today.

The Doniphan Department of Utilities says that upgrades to the city water system at the Oak Tree Village Complex are scheduled for today, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Motorists are encouraged to use caution while driving near the construction area. Businesses at the location will be under a precautionary boil water advisory until further notice.

BLACK RIVER AT POPLAR BLUFF CRESTS AT 17.4 FEET, OTHER AREAS OF BLACK RIVER STILL AT FLOOD STAGE

While the Black River at Poplar Bluff crested over the weekend, certain areas of the river remain above the flood stage.

According to the National Weather Service, Black River was measured at 17.4 feet shortly before noon on Saturday and has been falling since. The river was above the flood stage in Poplar Bluff from approximately 6 pm Friday night through Midnight Saturday night.

By late Sunday night, the river level had dropped below nine feet.

The Black River at Pocahontas and Black Rock, Arkansas remains above the flood stage and is projected to stay that way for the next several days.

NEW MADRID COUNTY CENTRAL ADVANCES TO STATE SEMIFINAL, EAST CARTER AND CLARKTON ELIMINATED IN QUARTERFINALS

One Southeast Missouri school has advanced to the state Final Four, while two others are looking to next year.

The New Madrid County Central Eagles won their Class 3 State Quarterfinal matchup against West County Friday night, 71-38.

With the win, the Eagles will now take on Lafayette County this Friday in Springfield for the chance to play for a State Championship.

Two other Southeast Missouri teams were eliminated over the weekend in State Quarterfinal action. In Class 1, Clarkton fell to South Iron 77-63.

On the girls side, East Carter fought hard but were unable to get past New Haven, losing by a score of 50-40.

Coming up today, the Dexter boys will travel to Farmington to take on the Park Hills Central Rebels in the Class 4 State Sectional.

MULTIPLE MEETINGS SCHEDULED TO DISCUSS LAKE WAPPAPELLO OPERATIONS

Multiple public meetings have been scheduled for this month to discuss the Wappapello Lake water control plan, operations, and dam safety.

According to the US Army Corps of Engineers, the first meeting has been scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14th at the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitor Center in Wappapello.

The second meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 15th beginning at 10 a.m. at the St. Francis Drainage District building in Piggott.

During the meetings, Corps of Engineers’ staff will also host a question and answer session and give presentations on water control procedures, 2023 operations, and dam safety.

PUBLIC MEETING SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK IN WAYNE COUNTY

A public meeting will be held this week to discuss transportation in Wayne County.

The Wayne County Commission, the Ozark Foothills Regional Planning Commission, and the Ozark Foothills Transportation Advisory Committee will be conducting a joint meeting at 9:30 am on Tuesday, March 7th at the Wayne County Courthouse.

During the event, members of the Wayne County Transportation Advisory Committee will be meeting with the general public to discuss transportation issues and priorities within the county.

CULVERT REPLACEMENT SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Highway 53 in Dunklin County will be reduced today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

The section of Route 53 to be reduced is located from County Road 211 to Route H.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

PAVEMENT REPAIR PROJECT BEGINS TODAY IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Route NN in Dunklin County will be reduced over the next two weeks as contractor crews perform asphalt pavement repairs.

According to MoDot, the section of roadway involved in the project is located from Route 412 to the Arkansas State line.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Friday, March 17th, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

POPLAR BLUFF POM SQUAD TO PERFORM IN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TODAY

The Poplar Bluff Pom Squad is gearing up to compete for a national title.

The Pom Squad will be performing today in the National Dance Alliance National Championship in Orlando, Florida.

According to school officials, Poplar Bluff is scheduled to take the stage at 3:51 PM.

EAST CARTER AND CLARKTON TO PLAY FOR SPOTS IN STATE BASKETBALL SEMI-FINALS

Multiple Southeast Missouri basketball teams will be playing this weekend for chances at a spot in the state final four.

The East Carter Lady Redbirds will be playing in the Class 2 State Quarterfinal at noon on Saturday against the New Haven Shamrocks.

Also on Saturday, the Class 3 girls State Quarterfinal will see Portageville taking on West County.

Coming up later today on the Boys side, Clarkton will be playing South Iron at 6 pm in the Class 1 State Quarterfinal. That game is scheduled to begin at 6 pm. The Class 3 State Quarterfinal matchup between New Madrid County Central and West County is also scheduled for tonight.

The Poplar Bluff Mules will also be continuing their district campaign tonight, traveling up to Kirkwood to take on the Kirkwood Pioneers in the Class 6, District 1 Semifinals. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm.

TWO TEENAGERS FLOWN TO ST. LOUIS HOSPITAL FOLLOWING CRASH NEAR ELLINGTON

Three teenagers were injured in a Thursday afternoon crash near Ellington.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 18 year old Timothy James, of Piedmont, was driving on Highway HH in Reynolds County, when his vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree.

James, and a 16 year old passenger in the vehicle, were seriously injured and flown to a St. Louis area hospital.

A 17 year old passenger in the vehicle received minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN MOTORCYCLE WRECK IN RIPLEY COUNTY

A Puxico man was injured this week during a motorcycle wreck in Ripley County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 39 year old James Hemby was riding the motorcycle on US Highway 160 near the Oregon and Ripley County line when his vehicle overturned, struck a tree, and then struck a fence.

Hemby, who was reportedly not wearing a safety device, was flown to a Jonesboro hospital with serious injuries.

INVESTIGATION INTO MISSING MOTORCYCLES LEADS TO TWO ARRESTS IN RANDOLPH COUNTY

An investigation into missing motorcycles led to the arrest of two people in Northeast Arkansas.

According to Randolph County Sheriff Kevin Bell, on Wednesday, deputies received a report that a wanted person, identified as Eric Martin, was staying at an area residence and was trying to sell two motorcycles.

Deputies contacted a resident in the area that was known to own two motorcycles and that person reported that theirs were missing.

A search of the area was conducted, which led deputies to the stolen motorcycles but Martin had fled the area. Deputies were later informed that Martin was at a residence in Pocahontas with another subject, identified as Kimberly Ferretta.

A search warrant was conducted at the residence, which resulted in the seizure of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia as well as the arrests of Martin and Ferretta on charges of possession of meth and paraphernalia.

Martin is also facing a charge of theft of property.

CENTER STAGE TO PERFORM BROADWAY CLASSIC AT TINNIN FINE ARTS CENTER

An area performance company will be showcasing a Broadway classic this month at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.

Center Stage will be performing Cinderella throughout the month of March, with the first show scheduled for 7 pm tonight.

Tickets are available for $10 at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center and at Three Rivers Students Accounts. Any tickets that remain will also be available at the door the night of the event.

Center Stage is a blended theater company of students, college employees, and community members.

RODEO RETURNS TO BLACK RIVER COLISEUM TONIGHT

Rodeo action is returning tonight to Poplar Bluff.

The Countryside Chevrolet Championship Rodeo will start at 7 pm both tonight and Saturday night at Black River Coliseum.

There will be multiple PRCA Pro Rodeo events including bronc busting, bull riding, and barrel racing.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. each night and children two years old and under get in for free.

Tickets are on sale at the Black River Coliseum Box Office and online through Ticketmaster.

KIWANIS PANCAKE DAY SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY

The Kiwanis Club of Poplar Bluff will be hosting the 85th Annual Pancake Day this weekend.

The event will be held from 6 am to noon on Saturday at the Poplar Bluff Junior High Cafeteria.

Tickets for the event are $6 and get you sausage, a drink, and all you can eat pancakes. Carry out will also be available.

In addition, there will be a pancake eating competition beginning at 10 am.

The event is being held to benefit the Bacon Park playground project.

FLOOD WATCH TO BE IN EFFECT LATE TODAY AND EARLY TOMORROW

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch that will be in effect beginning late this evening for much of Southeast Missouri.

According to weather officials, moderate to heavy rain will overspread the region from this evening through Friday morning.

Rainfall totals of 2 to 3 inches are forecast and localized higher amounts in excess of 4 inches are possible. This amount of rain may cause flooding of low water crossings, creeks, and streams.

The Flood Watch will be in effect through Friday morning.

Officials say that there is also a marginal risk of severe storms this evening. Damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes are the main severe hazards,

DATES ANNOUNCED FOR 44TH ANNUAL OLD GREENVILLE RENDEZVOUS

The dates have been announced for the 44th Annual Old Greenville Rendezvous.

The event, presented by the Crowley’s Ridge Blackpowder Club and the US Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Wappapello, will be held from April 14th through April 16th at the Old Greenville Campgrounds

CITY OF FISK TO HOST PUBLIC HEARING ON MARCH 14TH

A Butler County community will be meeting later this month to discuss a grant application.

The city of Fisk will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, March 14th at 5:50 pm at Fisk City Hall to discuss the submission of an application to the Community Development Block Grant Emergency program.

The city is requesting funds to complete water distribution and water treatment system improvements on behalf of the Fisk Water Department. The total project cost is estimated at $883,350. The City is requesting partial funding from CDBG in the amount of $815,350, tentatively.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON WARRANT AND FIREARM CHARGE

Authorities in Butler County have arrested an area man on a firearm charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 38 year old Brett Chilton, of Poplar Bluff, was taken into custody Tuesday night on a felony charge of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Chilton also reportedly had a warrant from the Poplar Bluff Police Department for failure to appear.

Following the arrest, he was held at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.

STATE ROAD CREWS WORKING TO REPAIR POTHOLES

The Missouri Department of Transportation says that crews are out working on patching potholes throughout the state.

Officials say that the majority of pothole patching repairs are done from now through the end of April.

When you see a MoDOT crew making repairs, remember to slow down and move over to give them room to work.

In 2022, MoDOT patched more than 800,000 potholes and spent over $16 million on pothole patching.

Motorists can report the location of potholes on state-maintained roads using by calling the 24/7 Customer Service Center at 1-888-ASK-MODOT.

Potholes on local streets and subdivisions should be reported to local city or county maintenance departments.

BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT UNDERWAY IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

An over two month long bridge project is underway in New Madrid County.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, Route 153 is being closed so contractor crews can replace a bridge over Drainage Ditch #44.

The bridge is located between New Madrid County Road 535/341 and Route B near Tallapoosa.

Weather permitting, work will take place through Wednesday, May 31.

EAST CARTER LADY REDBIRDS EARN TRIP TO STATE QUARTERFINAL

The East Carter Lady Redbirds are moving on to the State Quarterfinal.

East Carter pulled out the victory over the Neelyville Lady Tigers 46-38 in their Class 2 State Sectional matchup Tuesday night.

The win puts the Lady Redbirds one win away from the Class 2 Final Four. Their state quarterfinal opponent will be the New Haven Shamrocks.

Tip off is scheduled for noon on Saturday in Farmington.

OVER A THIRD OF PB HIGH SCHOOL JUNIORS EXCEL ON MULTI-APTITUDE TEST

Over a third of participating Poplar Bluff High School juniors were recognized for excelling on a multi aptitude test sponsored by the United States Department of Defense.

According to school officials, a total of 95 students scored 50 or higher on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test at Poplar Bluff High School.

The ASVAB provides students two years of free access to a career exploration website to learn requirements for entry points into different occupations and how to develop effective strategies for meeting career goals, according to Tamara Day, Counseling Department chairperson.

Scores of 50 or above open up opportunities for enlistment incentives, student loan repayment options and may activate the GI Bill Kicker program, according to Staff Sgt. Kristina McGuire of the Missouri Army National Guard.

The ASVAB is offered to all PBHS juniors annually, according to Day. The multiple-aptitude test includes language arts and mathematics components, and can serve as a predictor for the district-paid ACT college entrance exam.

While there is no obligation, the test is designed to predict future academic and occupational success in the military.

VA TO HOST TOWN HALL THIS WEEK IN POPLAR BLUFF

A Town Hall will be held this week in Poplar Bluff to discuss Veteran Health Benefits.

The John J. Pershing VA Medical Center will host a PACT Act informational town hall event from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 2nd at the Brown-Mabry American Legion Post 153.

Doors will open at 5 p.m.

Officials say that the PACT Act is a comprehensive expansion of Veterans Health Administration health care benefits, and Veterans may have many questions.

During the town hall, subject-matter experts will be on hand to talk about the various aspects of the law, including topics like expanded eligibility, toxic exposure screenings, and much more.

This is the second of three planned events designed to bring attention to the PACT Act to area Veterans.

MAN WINS $50,000 FROM SCRATCHERS TICKET IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A Cardwell man is celebrating a $50,000 win from a scratcher’s ticket.

According to the Missouri Lottery, a “$1,000,000 Cash Extravaganza” Scratchers ticket was recently purchased from a Cardwell liquor store.

While the man was in his vehicle scratching off the ticket, he noticed that he had won one of the game’s five $50,000 prizes.

The player says that he plans to pay bills and then put the rest of the prize money away in savings.

Route H in Dunklin County is being reduced to one lane with a 10 foot width restriction this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform roadside work. 

The work zone is located from County Road 200 to County Road 206 near Campbell.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through Friday.

MONTH LONG REPAIR PROJECT UNDERWAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route ZZ in Stoddard County will be reduced this month so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform shoulder repairs.

The section of roadway being reduced is located from Route H to County Road 642.

NEELYVILLE AND EAST CARTER TO FACE OFF TONIGHT WITH A TRIP TO THE STATE QUARTERFINAL ON THE LINE

Two area girls basketball teams will be facing off tonight with a trip to the state quarterfinals on the line.

The State Sectional matchup between the Class 2, District 1 champion Neelyville Lady Tigers and the Class 2, District 2 champion East Carter Lady Redbirds will tip off tonight at 6 pm in Sikeston.

The winner of tonight's game will advance to the Class 2 State Quarterfinal on Saturday, where they will play the winner of the game between St. Vincent and New Haven.

COMMERCIAL VEHICLE WRECK LEAVES ONE DEAD IN STODDARD COUNTY

One person is dead following a crash in Stoddard County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred as a passenger vehicle crossed the centerline of Highway H at County Road 637 and struck a Freightliner head on.

The driver of the passenger vehicle, 52 year old Diana Inman, of Dexter, was transported to a Dexter hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The driver of the freightliner suffered minor injuries.

FREE MEDICAL CLINIC TO BE OFFERED IN POPLAR BLUFF

A free medical clinic will be offered in Poplar Bluff next month.

Footsteps Medical Missions will be presenting the clinic from 8 am to 3 pm on Saturday, March 18th at the Black River Coliseum.

Services provided will include medical services, diabetic foot care, hair care, hearing aids, cardiology, and more.

SEVERAL PRESCRIBED BURNS WILL BE CONDUCTED THIS SPRING AT OZARK NATIONAL SCENIC RIVERWAYS

Several prescribed burns will be conducted this spring in Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Park Service, preparations are underway for Ozark National Scenic Riverways to accomplish several prescribed burns through mid-April.

The scheduling of these prescribed burns is dependent on weather and vegetation meeting certain conditions. During prescribed burns, park operations will continue as usual, although temporary closure of trails or roads adjacent to the burn unit may be necessary for visitor safety.

Firefighters plan to conduct prescribed burns during weather conditions that will allow for smoke to disperse without causing negative impacts. However, smoke may impair visibility in the vicinity of the prescribed burn and could linger low in the atmosphere over a broad geographic area.

MAN SENTENCED FOR BURGLARIZING RANGER STATION IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A sentence was handed down Monday for a man who burglarized a Ranger Station in Southeast Missouri.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, 40 year old Marvin Remster, of Crawford County, admitted in a November guilty plea that he broke into the Round Spring Ranger Station in the Ozark National Scenic Riverways national park in Shannon County.

Remster also admitted stealing a Chevrolet Silverado pickup owned by the National Park Service.

The burglary and theft were discovered on the night of December 26th, 2021, when law enforcement officials were notified that the ranger station was on fire.

Remster pleaded guilty to charges of burglary, theft of government property and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

On Monday, Remster was sentenced to 37 months in prison and ordered to pay more than $17,000 in restitution.

CULVERT REPLACEMENT TO FORCE CLOSURE OF STODDARD COUNTY ROAD

Route AD in Stoddard County will be closed today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway.

According to officials, the closure is located between County Roads 442 and 460.

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

WATER TO BE SHUT DOWN FOR BUTLER COUNTY PWSD #3 FOR 4-5 HOURS TODAY

Some Butler County residents will be without water for several hours today.

Superintendent Brian Williams with Butler County Water District #3 tells KWOC News that crews will be replacing the main feed line from the water plant today.

During the replacement, the water to the entire district will be shut down at 9 am and will be off for approximately four to five hours if everything goes well.

Williams says that after the water is turned back on the entire district will be under a boil water advisory until testing is done.

WIND ADVISORY IN EFFECT FOR TODAY

High winds could cause hazardous conditions today in Southeast Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service, a Wind Advisory is in effect through 3 pm this afternoon due to expected wind gusts of 40 to 55 mph.

Officials say that winds of this magnitude may knock down tree limbs and result in some power outages. Area residents are reminded to secure your outdoor objects and use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle.

KENNETT POLICE OFFICER AND TWO OTHER SUBJECTS INJURED IN CRASH DURING A PURSUIT

A Kennett Police officer was one of three people injured in a wreck Friday morning.

According to authorities, the officer was in a pursuit shortly before noon on Friday when the patrol vehicle was involved in a crash.

The officer and two people in the other vehicle were injured in the wreck. The officer was transported to a Poplar Bluff hospital, while the two other injured people were transported to area hospitals.

Information was not available about their current conditions.

BLOOMFIELD MAN APPOINTED AS STODDARD COUNTY COMMISSIONER

A Bloomfield man has been appointed to serve as a Stoddard County commissioner.

Last week, Missouri Governor Mike Parson appointed C.D. Stewart to serve as the First District Commissioner of Stoddard County.

Stewart has served as President of CCG Farms in Bloomfield since 1977 and as a partner and business manager of Stewart and Stewart since 1988.

He previously served on the Missouri Farm Bureau Board of Directors, Missouri Rice Committee, and Missouri Agri-Energy Board of Directors.

SPECIAL CITY COUNCIL MEETING TO BE HELD TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

A special meeting of the Poplar Bluff city council has been scheduled for today.

According to city officials, the city council will consider and then possibly take action on a resolution authorizing the Mayor to submit an application to the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity Discretionary Grant Program.

The special meeting will begin at noon today at the City Council Chambers on 5th Street. There will also be a citizen’s input period where each person in the audience may take the opportunity to address the city council on any matter which is not on the printed agenda.

BRIDGE REPAIRS SET FOR EARLY THIS WEEK IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Route 53 in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane for the first half of this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge repairs.

The section of roadway being reduced is located between County Roads 215 and 211 near Campbell.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

INTERSTATE 55 TO BE REDUCED TODAY FOR SIGNAGE REPAIRS

Northbound Interstate 55 in Pemiscot County will be reduced to one lane with a 14-foot width restriction as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform signage repairs. 

This section of roadway is located near Hayti, between mile markers 18.2 and 18.6.

Weather permitting, work is scheduled to take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

17th ANNUAL CHILI COOK-OFF SET FOR SATURDAY

Chili lovers from across Southeast Missouri will be gathering in Poplar Bluff for the Mason-Dixon Chili Society’s 17th annual Chili Cook-Off.

The event will be held from 11 am to 2 pm on Saturday at the Black River Coliseum. Event organizers say that admission to the cook-off is free.

All proceeds from the event will go to benefit the United Gospel Rescue Mission.

PUBLIC MEETING SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN CARTER COUNTY

The voluntary residential flood buyout project will be the topic of a public meeting held this morning in Carter County.

According to officials, the meeting is scheduled for 9:30 am at the Carter County Courthouse in Van Buren.

The county’s ongoing residential voluntary buyout project includes assistance like relocation expenses and down payment assistance for those who qualify.

The county is interested in obtaining citizen input on the existing buyout zone and discussing eligibility, available assistance, the application process, and other needs related to the April and May 2017 flooding events within the county.

At least 70% of the funds will be used to benefit low to moderate income persons. Due to the nature of a buyout, displacement of persons will be proposed.

CENTER STAGE TO PERFORM BROADWAY CLASSIC AT TINNIN FINE ARTS CENTER

An area performance company will be showcasing a Broadway classic next month at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center.

Center Stage will be performing Cinderella during the month of March, with the first performance scheduled for 7 pm on March 3rd.

DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR POPLAR BLUFF STREET DEPARTMENT ANNUAL CITY CEMETERY CLEAN UP

Poplar Bluff residents still have time to remove objects they want to keep before the annual city cemetery clean up.

BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT UNDERWAY IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

Route J in Dunklin County has been closed so contractor crews can replace a bridge.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the bridge is located between Route JJ and Route H.

OVER 600 PEOPLE LOST POWER DURING WEDNESDAY STORMS

Wednesday’s severe storm system resulted in power outages for numerous people across Southeast Missouri.

At one point Wednesday afternoon, the Ozark Border Electric Cooperative outage map showed over 500 customers without power in Stoddard County, while at least 170 customers did not have power in Dunklin County.

Power outages were also reported in Ellsinore.

According to the National Weather Service, wind speeds of around 60 miles per hour were measured Wednesday in Southeast Missouri.

TWO ARRESTED IN POPLAR BLUFF FOR DISTRIBUTION OF METHAMPHETAMINE

An early Wednesday morning traffic stop has resulted in the arrest of two people on distribution charges.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, an officer conducted the traffic stop shortly before 3 am Wednesday, on Highway 53.

During the stop, 44 year old Amy Bittle and 34 year old Jamie Tripp, both of Sikeston, were both taken into custody on charges of distribution of methamphetamine.

Following their arrests, both were logged in the Butler County Jail.

KIWANIS PANCAKE DAY SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 4TH

The Kiwanis Club of Poplar Bluff will be hosting the 85th Annual Pancake Day next month.

The event will be held on Saturday, March 4th from 6 am to noon at the Poplar Bluff Junior High Cafeteria.

Tickets for the event are $6 and get you sausage, a drink, and all you can eat pancakes. Carry out will also be available.

In addition, there will be a pancake eating competition beginning at 10 am.

The event is being held to benefit the Bacon Park playground project.

MISSING COLORADO MAN FOUND DEAD IN CLAY COUNTY

A missing Colorado man has been found dead in Northeast Arkansas.

Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole tells KWOC News that shortly before 8 am Tuesday, his department received a report of a deceased person by the river levee close to the bridge off Highway 90.

The person was identified as 83 year old Randolph Rodewald, of Denver, Colorado, who was reported missing Tuesday morning by the Denver Police Department.

No foul play is suspected in the death and Sheriff Cole says it is suspected that Rodewald was disoriented and got stuck in a muddy puddle beside his vehicle and was unable to get up.

The body was transported to the Arkansas Crime Lab in Little Rock.

Most of Southeast Missouri could see wind gusts of around 45 miles per hour today.

According to the National Weather Service, a wind advisory will be in effect today from 9 am to 8 pm for numerous counties including Butler, Ripley, Stoddard, and New Madrid.

Officials say that south winds of 20 to 25 miles per hour with gusts of 40 to 45 miles per hour are expected. The gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects and knock down tree limbs, which could result in power outages.

Isolated thunderstorms are also possible across the entire region today.

Officials are urgent motorists to use extra caution while driving, especially if you are operating a high profile vehicle.

WOMAN REPORTS HER VEHICLE WAS STOLEN IN POPLAR BLUFF

A woman reported her vehicle was stolen over the weekend in Poplar Bluff.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, on Sunday a woman said that she was driving on Sunset Drive when a white female wearing a bandanna sat up in the back seat of her vehicle.

The suspect told the victim to pull over and get out of the vehicle.

The victim says she was allowed to remove her groceries, wallet, and a beverage before the suspect drove away in the vehicle.

The victim was not harmed and thinks the suspect got into her van while she was inside a store.

Officers canvassed the area, but were unable to find the vehicle.

BRIDGE REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS NEAR CAMPBELL

Route 53 in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane, with a ten and a half foot width restriction, today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge repairs.

The bridge is located near Campbell, between County Road 215 and County Road 206.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

WESTBOUND US 60 REDUCED IN CARTER AND SHANNON COUNTIES

Westbound US 60 in Carter County has been reduced to one lane so crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation can perform crack sealing in the roadway.

The work zone begins at Route P in Carter County and continues for two miles to the west into Shannon County.

According to officials, the lane will remain closed for the duration of the work, with plans to reopen the lane at noon on Friday.

PURSUIT LEADS TO DRUG AND GUN BUST IN CLAY COUNTY

Two people are in custody following a pursuit on Sunday morning. 

Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole tells KWOC News that at approximately 9:40 AM Sunday, a deputy was traveling westbound on Highway 328 when he observed a red vehicle on his side of the roadway headed toward him, almost hitting him. The deputy initiated a traffic stop and as he approached the vehicle, the vehicle took off. 

The deputy initiated a pursuit and reported that the vehicle had a speed of around 100 mph. The driver eventually lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll over. 

A female subject, later identified as 31 year old Amanda Smith, was thrown from the vehicle into a field. A male subject, later identified as  22 year old Jacob Woods, jumped out of the vehicle and tried to run. He was then apprehended by the deputy. Both subjects were flown to area hospitals for treatment. 

Sheriff Cole says deputies recovered an AR-15, what is believed to be drugs, and an amount of cash during the investigation. 

Both subjects are being charged with felony simultaneous drugs and firearms, felony possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a firearm by a certain person. 

OAK RIDGE BOYS TO BE IN POPLAR BLUFF TONIGHT FOR 2023 VALENTINES FOR VETERANS CONCERT

The 2023 Valentines for Veterans concert is tonight in Poplar Bluff. 

According to the Wake Foundation, the concert, featuring the Oak Ridge Boys, will be held at the Black River Coliseum, with doors opening at 5 pm.  

Officials say that over 5,000 tickets have been given away to veterans and their families for the event.

POPLAR BLUFF ROAD TO BE CLOSED THIS WEEK

A Poplar Bluff road will be closed over the next few days. 

According to Municipal Utilities, sewer repairs will cause the closure of Ida Street from Tuesday through Friday. 

The closure will be located between Spring Street and Tremont Street. 

EXPLOSIVE DEVICE FOUND IN SOUTHERN MISSOURI VEHICLE

One man is in custody after an active explosive device was discovered in his vehicle. 

According to the Howell County Sheriff’s Office, shortly after 7 am on Sunday, dispatch received a report of a vehicle stopped on a county road with a male subject slumped over the steering wheel. 

Deputies responded to the location where they made contact with the driver, who had a suspended Missouri Driver’s License.

Deputies located what is believed to be a home-made explosive device in the vehicle. Upon locating the device, Deputies contacted the Missouri State Highway Patrol Bomb Squad in Jefferson City for assistance. 

Bomb Squad personnel confirmed the device was an active explosive device. Officials say that the device was assessed, moved to a safe location, and rendered safe. 

The subject is being held at the Howell County Adult Detention Center and his name has not been released. 

The investigation into the device is ongoing.

PIEDMONT MAN ARRESTED ON METH CHARGE IN WAYNE COUNTY

Authorities in Wayne County have arrested a Piedmont man on a meth charge. 

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 61 year old George Hubert was arrested Saturday morning on a felony charge of possession of methamphetamine. 

Hubert also reportedly had a felony warrant out of Wayne County for possession of a controlled substance. 

PAVEMENT REPAIRS TO BEGIN TODAY ON ROUTE 67 IN BUTLER COUNTY

Route 67 in Butler County will be reduced over the next few weeks as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs. 

According to officials, the section of roadway being reduced is located from Route MM to the Arkansas state line. 

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Tuesday, March 14th from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

MAJOR LAKE WAPPAPELLO CAMPGROUND TO BE CLOSED DURING THE 2023 RECREATION SEASON

A major campground at Lake Wappapello will be closed for the 2023 Recreation Season.

According to the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Redman Creek East Campground will remain closed during the 2023 Recreation Season due to ongoing construction and major rehabilitation.

The work in the campground includes replacement of utilities on many sites, 50-amp RV electrical service, water and sewer RV hookups at the campsite, and new concrete campsite impact pads, among other improvements.

In addition, the renovation will include the replacement of the shower house and restroom.

Redman Creek West Campground will remain open for camping, however due to the closure of the Redman Creek fee booth all campsites will be available by reservation only. Reservations must be made online by visiting Recreation.gov, or by phone at 1-877-444-6777.

TODAY IS THE FINAL DAY FOR EARLY REGISTRATION FOR THE 17th ANNUAL CHILI COOK-OFF

Today is the final day for early registration to compete in the Mason-Dixon Chili Society’s 17th annual Chili Cook-Off.

The event will be held from 11 am to 2 pm on Saturday, February 25th at the Black River Coliseum. Admission is free and a cook’s party will be held the day before the event.

The participation fee is $100 per booth if you register by today. Starting tomorrow, the registration fee will be $125 per booth. Proceeds from the Cook-Off go to benefit the United Gospel Rescue Mission.

HUNTERS AND ANGLERS REMINDED THAT ANNUAL PERMITS EXPIRE AT THE END OF THE MONTH

Missouri annual permits for various game and fish will expire at the end of the month.

The Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding Missouri hunters and anglers that related annual permits expire at the end of February, including 2022 permits for small game, fishing, trout fishing, and combination hunting and fishing.

Anyone wanting to purchase a permit can do so at vendors around the state, online at mdc.mo.gov/BuyPermits, or through MDC’s free mobile apps, MO Hunting and MO fishing.

DRIVER EXAMINATION STATIONS TO BE CLOSED TODAY FOR WASHINGTON’S BIRTHDAY

Driver examinations will not be available across Missouri today due to the holiday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, driver examination stations throughout the state will be closed today in observance of Washington’s Birthday.

Officials say that normal operations will resume on Tuesday. 

ROADSIDE WORK SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK NEAR CAMPBELL

Route H in Dunklin County will be reduced to one lane with a 10 foot width restriction for this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform roadside work. 

According to officials, the work zone is located from County Road 200 to County Road 206 near Campbell.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through Friday, February 24th. 

THREE WEEK LONG ROAD PROJECT SET TO BEGIN TODAY ON INTERSTATE 155

Northbound Interstate 155 in Pemiscot County will be reduced with a 10-foot width restriction for three weeks as contractor crews perform concrete work.  

Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation tell KWOC News that the section of roadway to be reduced is located from the Tennessee State line to mile marker 9.4.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Monday, March 13th from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

SEMO SPORTSMAN’S BANQUET SCHEDULED FOR MARCH

Preparations are underway for the annual Southeast Missouri Sportsman’s Association Banquet coming up in March

OVER 200 SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED FOR THE TRAINING OF LAW ENFORCEMENT

Over two hundred scholarships have been awarded for training new law enforcement officers in Missouri.

Governor Mike Parson has announced that in its first year the Missouri Blue Scholarship helped fund the training of 217 law enforcement recruits at Missouri training academies.

Governor Parson announced the Missouri Blue Scholarship program in October as a way to help attract more Missourians to law enforcement careers and address officer shortages in law enforcement agencies across the state.

The scholarships, administered by the Missouri Department of Public Safety, are awarded on a first come, first served basis to pay for law enforcement training academy tuition.

Due to the tremendous success of the program and additional scholarship seekers beyond the original appropriation, Governor Parson is asking the General Assembly to approve $175,000 to fund an additional 35 full scholarships in the current fiscal year. BARRICADED SUBJECT TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN POPLAR BLUFF

A barricaded subject has been taken into custody in Poplar Bluff.

Poplar Bluff Deputy Police Chief Keith Hefner tells KWOC News that just before noon on Wednesday, officers were dispatched to a location on North Main Street following a report of a possible gunshot and a female heard screaming.

Upon arrival, officers learned there was a suicidal male subject barricaded inside the residence with a firearm and it was reported that he had already fired a shot prior to the officer’s arrival.

Numerous attempts to make contact with the subject were initially unsuccessful, however the subject was eventually taken into custody without further incident.

The subject was transported to a local hospital for mental health treatment.

Hefner wanted to thank the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, Butler County EMS, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol for their assistance, both at the scene and with calls for service during the incident.

EXPLOSION REPORTED AT SOUTHEAST MISSOURI BUSINESS, TWO SEVERELY INJURED

Two people were reportedly severely injured following an explosion at a Southeast Missouri business Wednesday morning.

According to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, shortly after 7 am, officers responded to Potashnick Transportation Incorporated in reference to a reported fire inside the structure with people inside.

Fire and EMS crews also responded to the scene and treatment was administered to both injured subjects. Fire personnel quickly worked to extinguish the fire.

Officials say that the Fire Marshal determined the cause to be from the subjects using a cutting torch on an empty 55-gallon drum that contained explosive vapors. During their work, the drum caught fire and immediately exploded, causing the drum to strike one subject in the head.

The other subject suffered burns to their lower extremities.

Both injured subjects were transported to an area hospital. 

TWO THOUSAND DOLLAR GRANT USED TO ESTABLISH THINKING CLASSROOMS AT PBMS

Poplar Bluff Middle School teachers will use grant money to further engage student learning.

According to school officials, the Poplar Bluff School Foundation has funded a $2,000 grant for Middle School math teachers to establish ‘thinking classrooms.’

Officials say that a thinking classroom focuses on 14 teaching practices for enhancing academic success, deconstructing such conventions as: what tasks are used, how collaborative groups are formed, how to arrange furniture, how questions are answered, how to foster student autonomy and how to use formative assessments.

Wipebook flipcharts, along with markers, erasers and easels, plus the textbook “Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics” were distributed last month through the Foundation’s annual innovative educational project program.

AREA SHERIFF WARNING MOTORISTS TO WATCH FOR SKIMMING DEVICES ON GAS PUMPS

With gas prices as high as they are, an area official is reminding motorists to make sure you aren’t losing even more money at the pump.

According to the New Madrid County Sheriff Department, an investigation is ongoing into the use of skimming devices after several have been recently located on local gas pumps.

New Madrid County Sheriff William Cooper says that “skimmers” are devices that thieves attach over card slots at gas pumps. They can be used to save and store credit card information.

Cooper says there are simple things to avoid falling victim to these. If you notice that the pump’s serial-numbered security stickers has been ripped, that is an indication that someone may have tampered with it.

Walking inside to pay instead of paying at the pump is another way to avoid “skimmers”.

Sheriff Cooper is also asking everyone to pay close attention to your credit and debit card statement. If you see any discrepancies please contact the Sheriff’s Department.

BRIDGE REPAIRS SCHEDULED FOR TODAY IN CAMPBELL

Route 53 in Dunklin County will be reduced today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge repairs. 

The section of Route 53 involved in the repairs is located from Route 62 to Bailey Street in Campbell. 

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

CRASH IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI CLAIMS LIVES OF TWO PEOPLE

Crews were on the scene of a multiple fatality wreck Tuesday in Southeast Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash was located three miles west of Senath on Highway 412.

Officials say that two commercial vehicles collided head on. The drivers of the vehicles, 63 year old Steven Wagoner, of Salem, Illinois, and 60 year old Steven Billingsley, of Memphis, Tennessee, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

US Highway 412 was blocked for multiple hours Tuesday while crews were working the crash site.  

ONE DEAD AFTER ATV COLLIDES WITH MACK TRUCK IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A Maynard man has died in connection to an ATV wreck in Randolph County, Arkansas.

According to the Arkansas State Police, 55 year old Joseph Barber was driving the ATV on Middlebrook Road when he crossed the centerline in a right hand curve and struck a Mack Truck.

The crash occurred shortly after 8 am Monday morning.

Officials say that Barber was killed in the wreck and there were no injuries for the driver of the truck. 

17th ANNUAL CHILI COOK-OFF SET FOR FEBRUARY 25TH

The date is fast approaching for the Mason-Dixon Chili Society’s 17th annual Chili Cook-Off.

The event will be held from 11 am to 2 pm on Saturday, February 25th at the Black River Coliseum. Admission is free. A cook’s party will be held the day before the event.

The participation fee is $100 per booth if you register by February 20th. After the 20th, the registration fee will be $125 per booth. Proceeds from the Cook-Off go to benefit the United Gospel Rescue Mission.

NEW EXHIBIT AVAILABLE AT THE POPLAR BLUFF LIBRARY 

A new exhibit from an area artist is available at the Poplar Bluff Library.

Adult Services Librarian Alora Bauer tells KWOC News that Belinda Bailey’s “Small Town Miniatures” will be shown at the library’s Main Branch.

Bailey, who was born in Dexter and raised in Poplar Bluff, creates miniatures for friends and family, often using found objects as the base.

Bauer says that the exhibit will be available for viewing at the Library through the end of March. 

POPLAR BLUFF IMPROV TEAM TO HOST SHOW NEXT MONTH 

The Poplar Bluff High School Improv Team will be hosting a show next month.

The 6th annual “Whose Line Is It Anyway,” performance will begin at 7 pm on Saturday, March 4th at the Kay Porter Theater in Poplar Bluff. A second show is scheduled for 2 pm on Sunday, March 5th.  

The audience will get to participate in helping form the scenes during the show. Tickets will be $5 and come with one free suggestion card. Additional suggestion cards can be purchased for $1.

Proceeds from the event will go to support the Poplar Bluff High School Drama Club. 

CONCRETE WORK ON INTERSTATE 155 TO CONTINUE THROUGH EARLY MARCH

Northbound I-155 in Pemiscot County will be reduced with a 10-foot width restriction through early next month as contractor crews perform concrete work.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of roadway being reduced is located from the Tennessee State line to mile marker 9.4. 

Weather permitting, work will take place from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Monday, March 6th.

WINDS UP TO 60 MILES PER HOUR POSSIBLE TODAY IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Some areas of Southeast Missouri could see wind speeds of up to around 60 miles per hour today.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning for Butler, Stoddard, New Madrid, Bollinger, Mississippi, and Cape Girardeau Counties for 10 am through 8 pm today.

Weather officials say that south wind gusts up to 60 mph are possible in these areas. Some trees may be uprooted, and numerous large tree limbs will likely be knocked down. A few power lines may also be knocked down, but damage to power lines is more likely through trees and limbs falling.

High profile vehicles like semi-trucks may have significant difficulty traveling particularly on east-west roadways.
The southern portion of our listening area is also at risk for severe weather tonight, with the biggest concern being hailstorms.

MAN FOUND DEAD IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI DRAINAGE DITCH

A Wardell man was found dead Monday morning in a Southeast Missouri drainage ditch.

According to a drowning report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 71 year old Earl Hitchens was found shortly after 7 am in a drainage ditch near an unoccupied vehicle.

The ditch was located near Pemiscot County Road 248, three miles east of Wardell.

Hitchens was pronounced dead at the scene by Pemiscot County Coroner Bryan Irons. 

TWO PEOPLE RESCUED FROM STUCK ELEVATOR AT POPLAR BLUFF BUSINESS 

Poplar Bluff fire crews rescued multiple people over the weekend from a stalled elevator at a Poplar Bluff business.

According to the Poplar Bluff Fire Department, a report came in Saturday afternoon from Southern Bank of people that were stuck in an elevator.

When fire crews arrived on scene, an employee told them that the elevator was stuck near the second floor with two people inside.

The crews gained access to the elevator car, which was stalled halfway between the first and second floors, and helped the two occupants out of the elevator.

There were no reports of any injuries. 

TWO ARRESTS MADE IN CONNECTION TO RASH OF BIKE THEFTS IN BERNIE

Updating a story we brought you earlier this month, two people have been taken into custody in connection to a recent rash of bicycle thefts in Bernie.

According to the Bernie Police Department, officers arrested 33 year old Janey Stoner and 31 year old Timothy Vaughn, both of Bernie, on Friday.

In early February, Bernie Police Chief Rick Cook encouraged bike owners to take steps to protect their vehicles following an increase in bicycle thefts.

The investigation into the thefts led to the arrests of Vaughn on three city ordinance warrants for stealing and Stoner, who has been formally charged with receiving stolen property/stealing. 

CONTRACTS AWARDED FOR MULTIPLE ROAD PROJECTS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Multiple contracts were awarded last week for road improvements in Southeast Missouri.

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a 1.18 million dollar contract for bridge replacements over Taylor Slough near Kennett and Drainage Ditch 72 near Bragg City.

An 886 thousand dollar contract was awarded for a bridge deck and substructure replacement over Ditch Number 12 in Dunklin County.

An over 560 thousand dollar contract was awarded for scrub seals on Route A in Carter and Wayne Counties as well as Route 162 in New Madrid County.

Additional information, regarding timelines and impacts to traffic, will be released prior to the start of construction.

LIGHTING REPLACEMENTS COULD CAUSE DELAYS TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route 25 in Stoddard County will be reduced today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace roadway lighting.

The section of roadway to be reduced is located from Lighthouse Road to the commuter parking lot in Dexter.

Weather permitting, work is scheduled to take place today through 2 p.m.

LAST SECOND THREE POINT SHOT HELPS GREENVILLE TO OFC CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2023 Ozark Foothills Conference Championship Friday was a night for the bears. 

The Greenville Bears took home the boys Varsity championship Friday night at the Libla Family Sports Complex in Poplar Bluff thanks to an Easton Evans game tying three point basket with two seconds remaining in regulation to send the championship game to overtime. 

The Bears overwhelmed Doniphan in the extra period to claim the championship with a final score of 76-71.

Twin Rivers denied Greenville a chance at a double championship earlier in the night, defeating the Bears 51-39 in the boys Junior Varsity Final. 

In the girls final, Doniphan cruised to a 59-29 win over Neelyville. 

PRELIMINARY AUTOPSY RESULTS RELEASED IN CHILD DEATH INVESTIGATION

Updating a story we brought to you last week, an autopsy has been conducted on a child who recently died.

Carter County Sheriff Dustin Boyer tells KWOC News that a report was made by medical personnel of possible child neglect on February 3rd. An investigation was launched with the assistance of the Missouri State Highway Patrol Investigation unit and during the investigation, it was reported that the child had passed away.

KWOC News spoke with Carter County Coroner Joe Ben Chapman who says that preliminary results of the autopsy suggest that the death of the child is not consistent with a “Natural Death” designation.

Tatiana Gardner, of Ellsinore, is in custody on a charge of abuse or neglect of a child. No bond has been set.

The investigation into the death is ongoing.

HOMELESS MAN ARRESTED IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS FOR ALLEGED RAPE OF A CHILD

Authorities in Northeast Arkansas have arrested a homeless man for the alleged rape of a child.

Officials with the Paragould Police Department tell KWOC News that an arrest affidavit was issued Friday for Jacob Howard.

According to the affidavit, on February 2nd Paragould officers were dispatched to the 100 block of East Baldwin Street in reference to rape allegations involving a victim under the age of 10.

A forensic interview was conducted with the victim who disclosed sexual acts that constitute rape.

The victim named Howard as the person who performed the acts.

Howard was taken into custody and is being held in the Greene County Jail. His bond has been set at $50,000, cash only. 

CITY OF DONIPHAN TO HOST PUBLIC MEETING TONIGHT

The City of Doniphan will be holding a public meeting tonight to discuss the voluntary residential flood buyout project.

According to officials, the meeting will be held at 6 pm at the Doniphan City Hall.

The city’s ongoing residential voluntary buyout project includes assistance like relocation expenses and down payment assistance for those who qualify.

The city is interested in obtaining citizen input on the existing buyout zone and discussing eligibility, available assistance, the application process, and other needs related to the April and May 2017 flooding events within the city.

At least 70% of the funds will be used to benefit low to moderate income persons. Due to the nature of a buyout, displacement of persons will be proposed.

RAILROAD MAINTENANCE CONTINUES TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route AH in Stoddard County will be closed today as crews perform railroad maintenance on the tracks.

The section of the roadway to be closed is located near Grayridge, from U.S. 60 to Route 114.  

Weather permitting, work will take place today from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.  

INTERSTATE OFF RAMP IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI TO BE CLOSED BEGINNING TODAY

The Southbound I-155 off ramp at Exit 17A in Pemiscot County has been closed as contractor crews perform concrete work. 

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, work was scheduled to begin at 6 am this morning. Completion of the project is anticipated by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 6th.

The work zone will be in place 24 hours a day until work is completed.

ONE CHARGED IN CONNECTION TO DEATH OF CHILD IN CARTER COUNTY

The death of a child in Southeast Missouri has resulted in the arrest of an area woman.

Carter County Sheriff Dustin Boyer tells KWOC News that a report was made by medical personnel of possible child neglect on February 3rd. An investigation was launched with the assistance of the Missouri State Highway Patrol Investigation unit.

During the investigation, it was reported that the child had passed away.

Tatiana Gardner, of Ellsinore, has been charged with abuse or neglect of a child and no bond has been set.

Boyer says that the investigation is ongoing. 

TODAY IS CHAMPIONSHIP FRIDAY AT THE OFC TOURNAMENT

The Championship games are set for the 2023 Ozark Foothills Conference Basketball Tournament.

Doniphan will take on Greenville in the boys varsity final tonight after both teams picked up victories Tuesday night.

A total of three championship games will be played tonight at the Libla Family Sports Complex on the campus of Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff.

The Junior Varsity final will see Greenville take on Twin Rivers at 5:30 pm. That will be followed by the Girls Championship game between Doniphan and Neelyville at 7 pm. The Boys Varsity final will finish the night at 8:30 pm.

RIPLEY COUNTY WOMAN CONVICTED OF INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER

A Ripley County woman has been convicted of multiple charges, including involuntary manslaughter.

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey tells KWOC News that his office has obtained convictions against Danisha Price, of Ripley County, for involuntary manslaughter in the first degree, tampering with physical evidence, abandonment of a corpse, five counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and one count of resisting arrest.

The charges stem from an incident in July of 2018. Bailey says that Price had caused the death of Bruce Ehrenberg, Sr., and dumped his body in a remote location in the Mark Twain National Forest.

After doing so, Price was pulled over by law enforcement from the Doniphan Police Department for a traffic stop. When it became clear law enforcement intended to arrest Price, she fled and led law enforcement on a high-speed chase while having five children, ages three to nine years old in the vehicle.

Price eventually crashed her car, abandoned the vehicle, attempted to light it on fire, and forced her five children to flee into the nearby woods on foot, where they endured two nights without shelter, food, or clean water before they were found.

The case was prosecuted in Stoddard County after the defendant requested a change of venue.

BULKY ITEM PICK UP TO BE CONDUCTED NEXT WEEK IN POPLAR BLUFF

Poplar Bluff officials are reminding city residents that the city offers bulky item pickups once a month.

Residents can purchase bulk item tags from the city collector’s office at city hall for $20. The tags entitle you to the removal of four bulk items, such as couches or refrigerators. Tires may be collected for a charge of $3 per tire with a limit of four tires.

No construction materials or small items will be picked up and the program is for residential areas only.

Today is the final day this month to purchase item tags to be included in next week’s pick up, which will be conducted on February 14th.

OVER MONTH LONG ROAD PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

Route 53 in Butler County will be reduced to one lane for over one month as contractor crews perform approach work.  

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, the section of Route 53 involved in the project is located between Westwood Boulevard and Fair Street in Poplar Bluff.  

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Friday, March 31st, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.  

ROAD CLOSURES SCHEDULED FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW IN STODDARD COUNTY

The Missouri Department of Transportation is preparing for multiple road closures in Stoddard County due to railroad maintenance.

Missouri Route 153 in Stoddard County is being closed today from Route 60 to Route 114 near Essex. The closure is scheduled to be in effect through 6 pm tonight.

Route FF in Stoddard County will also be closed for railroad maintenance from West Main Street to South Main Street in Essex. 

Weather permitting, that closure will take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

TWIN RIVERS SUPERINTENDENT ENCOURAGES PARENTS TO SPEAK TO LEGISLATORS ABOUT FOUR DAY SCHOOL WEEK

An area superintendent is encouraging parents to reach out to legislators and voice their feelings on the four day school week.

In a letter to parents, Twin Rivers R-X Superintendent Rob Brown says that an amendment to Senate Bill 4 that has been introduced in the Missouri Senate would eliminate the four day school week.

The amendment would set a minimum of 174 days in a school term and remove language that would allow for 142 school days for schools with a four day week.

Brown added that Missouri has always been a local control state and the bill does not allow for local rural districts to govern themselves.

He says that state legislators want to hear from parents about how the four day school week has helped or hurt their children or family. 

KWOC News spoke with Missouri State Senator Jason Bean who says “Our schools have navigated more than their fair share of obstacles over the past few years. Employment and funding issues have arisen in many areas recently, and education hasn’t been immune to those problems. A 4-day school week doesn’t work for everyone, but it does for some, and at the end of the day I believe our local school officials have the ability to decide what is best for their program.”

The third place games are set to be played today at the 2023 Ozark Foothills Conference Basketball Tournament in Greenville.

The day will start with the Boys Junior Varsity game between East Carter and Neelyville at 4:30 pm.

At 6 pm, the Girls will take the court with Naylor challenging East Carter.

The Boys varsity third place game will finish the night at 7:30 pm featuring Twin Rivers facing Clearwater.

FIRE DEATHS IN KENNETT RULED AN ACCIDENT

A January fire in the Missouri Bootheel that resulted in the death of multiple people has been ruled an accident.

According to Kennett Fire Chief Lance Davis, the fire occurred on January 13th at a home on Masterson Street.

When Fire Department personnel arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames at the front of the single story brick residence and immediately began firefighting operations. Firefighters later found two deceased victims inside the residence.

Davis says that the Missouri State Fire Marshal's Investigative Unit has concluded that the origin of the fire was in the attic area over the living room. The cause of the fire was a failure or malfunction of the energized electrical circuits and the fire has been classified as accidental.

AREA NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION RECEIVES GRANT MONEY TO EXPAND FACILITIES

An area nonprofit organization will receive over a million dollars to expand their facilities.

Whole Kids Outreach has been selected to receive $850,000 in facilities and infrastructure grant funding from the Children’s Trust Fund, Missouri’s foundation for child abuse prevention.

With a local match of over $200,000, Whole Kids Outreach will use the over one million dollars to renovate and expand its 10-acre Center in Ellington as well as satellite offices in Poplar Bluff and Birch Tree.

Officials estimate that the project has the potential to save more than $700,000 over the next 10 years.

Whole Kids Outreach is a nonprofit that delivers child abuse and neglect prevention services to about 500 families a year in an 11-county area of Southeast Missouri through an array of home visiting services and child-centered programs.
