FIRST ROUND MATCHUPS SET FOR 35TH ANNUAL POPLAR BLUFF SHOWDOWN

The first round matchups have been set for the 35th Annual Poplar Bluff Showdown.

The three day basketball tournament will start on Wednesday, December 28th at Poplar Bluff High School.

The first round will see Little Rock Christian take on Haywood at 4 pm, followed by Blytheville vs. Hillcrest at 5:30 pm, Poplar Bluff against Douglass at 7 pm, and the day will finish with Springdale vs. Germantown at 8:30 pm.

Poplar Bluff Athletics Director Kent Keith tells KWOC News that tickets are on sale in the High School Athletic Department for eight dollars per day.

Every game of the 35th Annual Poplar Bluff Showdown will be broadcasted live on Facebook.com/TodaysTalkKWOC and youtube.com/RiverRadioPB. Live audio coverage will also be provided for every Poplar Bluff game on Today’s Talk KWOC 93.3 FM and 930 AM. 

TONIGHT IS THE FINAL NIGHT FOR THE SOUNDS OF CHRISTMAS AT THE PALACE OF PRAISE

Tonight is the final night for the 13th Annual Sounds of Christmas at the Palace of Praise.

The show will begin at 7 pm tonight and admission to the show is free, but you can also purchase tickets for a dinner theater experience as well.

FIVE NAMED TO THE THREE RIVERS COLLEGE ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME

Five new inductees have been named to the Three Rivers College Athletic Hall of Fame.

According to college officials, Don Crandell, Danny Foster, Chuck Malone, Mallory Siebert, and Anna Vogt have been chosen as the 2023 inductees.

The college will host a banquet honoring the inductees on February 3rd at the Holiday Inn in Poplar Bluff.

Dr. Wesley Payne, President of Three Rivers College says that they are proud to honor these individuals and their achievements.

FISK MAN ARRESTED ON METHAMPHETAMINE CHARGE

Authorities in Stoddard County have arrested an area man on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 52 year old Hillory Watkins, of Fisk, was taken into custody Monday on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Following the arrest, Watkins was held at the Stoddard County Jail. 

TWO ARRESTED ON COCAINE CHARGES IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Two men were arrested Monday evening in Southeast Missouri on cocaine charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 42 year old JC Brown and 34 year old Demitrius Greer, both of Charleston, were taken into custody on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance for cocaine and methamphetamine.

Greer is also facing charges of DWI-Drugs and felony resisting. 

Officials say that Brown also had a felony warrant out of St. Louis County for burglary. 

TWO WEEK ROAD PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

Route P in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane for two weeks as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway to be reduced is located from County Road 727 to Route WW near New Madrid. 

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Friday, December 30th, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.

POPLAR BLUFF POLICE INVESTIGATING WOMAN’S DEATH

Authorities in Poplar Bluff are investigating a recent death.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, a woman was recently found deceased in the backyard of a residence on West Victor Street.

The woman has been identified as 51 year old Shonda Martin, of Poplar Bluff.

An investigation into the death is being conducted by the PBPD and the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Lieutenant Josh Stewart with the PBPD tells us that foul play is not suspected at this point, however an autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday. 

MARK TWAIN SCHOOL AWARDED OVER $1,000 FOR JOBS FOR AMERICA’S GRADUATES PROGRAM

The Mark Twain School has been awarded over $1,000 for its Jobs for America’s Graduates program.

According to school officials, last month, JAG-Poplar Bluff was awarded $500 through Missouri first lady Teresa Parson’s inaugural Entrepreneur/Philanthropic Challenge; along with two $300 Community Project Funding grants for middle school students and high schoolers, respectively.

Parson visited Mark Twain in October during a tour of JAG programs. The next week, grant proposals were solicited via the first lady’s office and students came up with the ideas for the submissions.

OVER 16,000 DEER HARVESTED DURING ANTLERLESS PORTION OF DEER SEASON

Missouri hunters have been busy this month, taking over 16,000 deer.

Preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation shows that deer hunters in Missouri harvested 16,032 deer during the antlerless portion of the firearms deer season, which ran from December 3rd through the 11th.

Last year’s antlerless-portion harvest total was 15,019.

Officials say that archery season continues through January 15th, while the next alternative methods portion will run from December 24th through January 3rd.

DONATE A COAT TO HELP KEEP AREA CHILDREN WARM THIS WINTER

A coat drive will begin later this week to gather coats for area children.

Beginning on Friday, you can drop off any new or gently used coats, gloves, hats, and scarves at any Grateful Headz store.

All items donated will then be donated to the Child Concern Center so they can be distributed to families in extreme need.

Sizes from newborn to adult 3x will be accepted. The coat drive will run from December 16th to December 31st. 

PUBLIC MEETINGS SCHEDULED FOR THIS WEEK TO DISCUSS PROPOSED FUTURE I-57 CONNECTION IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A series of public meetings will be held this week to discuss the proposed future Interstate 57 in Northeast Arkansas.

The Arkansas Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration will conduct three Public Hearings to present and discuss the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed Walnut Ridge to Missouri State Line connection in Clay, Greene, Lawrence, and Randolph counties.

The meetings will be held today at Williams Baptist University in Walnut Ridge, tomorrow at the Pocahontas Community Center, and on Thursday at the M.B. Ainley Community Center in Corning. Each meeting will be from 4 to 7 pm and will be held as an open house with no formal presentations.

INTERSTATE WORK SET FOR THIS WEEK IN NEW MADRID COUNTY

Northbound Interstate 55 in New Madrid County will be reduced to one lane this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement work. 

The section of roadway affected by the project is located from Exit 49 to Exit 52 near New Madrid.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily through Friday.

PBHS REPEATS AS STATE CHEERLEADING CHAMPIONS

Poplar Bluff cheerleaders are celebrating back to back state championships.

The Poplar Bluff High School Competitive Cheerleading team won the 2022 Missouri Cheerleading Coaches Association Class 4 Small Squad State Championship over the weekend.

Poplar Bluff’s Lanie Robertson, Emma Hicks, Miles Coleman, Kenzie Cassie, Audrie Caudel, and Kelsey Kramer were selected as All-State.

Also at the championships, Neelyville won 2nd Place in the Class 1A Small Squad competition and Dexter won 2nd Place in the Class 2A Large Squad competition. 

91 YEAR OLD MAN KILLED IN WRECK NEAR MATTHEWS

A 91 year old man has died following a crash near Matthews.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred Saturday afternoon on US Highway 61 at Route H when a vehicle pulled into the path of another vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle, 91 year old Wayne Prince, of Marston, was transported to a Sikeston hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the first vehicle suffered minor injuries. 

FARMERS AND LANDOWNERS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI COULD BE ELIGIBLE FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

The Missouri Department of Conservation and the United States Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service are inviting farmers and landowners to apply to receive technical and financial assistance through the Regional Conservation Partnership Program.

According to the MDC, the Sand Prairie Restoration Partnership program is available in seven Southeast Missouri counties, including Butler, Dunklin, New Madrid, and Stoddard Counties.

Officials say that this project focuses on the restoration and protection of sand prairie communities on private land through voluntary perpetual easements. Applications must be received by January 13th to be considered for this round of funding.

OVERWIDTH HAULING PERMIT FOR HAY EXTENDED THROUGH THE BEGINNING OF MARCH

The Missouri Department of Transportation has extended the special overwidth hauling permit for hay at no cost through March 1st of next year.

Officials say the extension is to aid the agricultural community as statewide drought conditions continue.

Before hauling, drivers must apply for the special overwidth permit for loads that exceed 8 feet 6 inches in width and map their route to avoid work zones, bridges and other areas that have weight, narrow lane or height restrictions.

Permits can be requested online using the MoDOT Carrier Express online service. To have the fee waived, customers can write a comment on the application about the fee waiver or call in to have an agent waive the fee.

CULVERT REPLACEMENT TO CAUSE CLOSURE OF ROAD NEAR QULIN

Route DD in Butler County will be closed early this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews replace a culvert under the roadway. 

The section of roadway to be closed is located between County Road 327 and County Road 334 near Qulin.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. today through Wednesday.   

SHOULDER WORK SET FOR THIS WEEK IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route 114 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane this week as construction crews perform shoulder work.  

According to officials, the section of roadway to be reduced is located from Route 25 to McCormick Street in Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Thursday, December 22nd, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

FATAL SHOOTING UNDER INVESTIGATION IN BUTLER COUNTY

Officials are investigating an officer involved fatal shooting involving three people in Butler County.

The incident occurred midday Thursday at a location on AA Highway near the intersection of B Highway. Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs says that deputies responded to the residence following a report of numerous shots being fired.

At the scene, deputies were confronted by an armed subject. The deputies engaged the subject, killing him. Two additional deceased subjects were located inside with apparent gunshot wounds.

According to Sergeant Clark Parrott with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the victims have been identified as 76 year old Norman Morgan and 47 year old Timothy Morgan. The suspect was identified as Norman Morgan’s son, 45 year old Justin Morgan.

Multiple crews were on the scene including the Poplar Bluff Police Department, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the Butler County Sheriff's Department.

Dobbs says that the investigation has been turned over to the Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control. The Butler County Coroner is also assisting with the investigation.

LADY ROYALS CHRISTMAS CLASSIC TO BEGIN ON DECEMBER 17TH

16 women’s basketball teams will be descending on Broseley later this month for the 25th Annual Lady Royals Christmas Classic.

The tournament is scheduled to run from December 17th through the 21st at Twin Rivers High School and will feature numerous area schools including Twin Rivers, Malden, Dexter, Doniphan, Neelyville, Kennett, and more.

A bracket for the tournament will be released later today.

FOUR INJURED, TWO SERIOUSLY, IN CRASH NEAR BERNIE

Four people were injured in a two vehicle crash Wednesday near Bernie.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a vehicle, driven by 74 year old Timothy Thurston, of Broseley, crossed the center line of Missouri Highway 25 and struck another vehicle head on.

Thurston and a passenger in the second vehicle each suffered serious injuries and were transported by ambulance to a Poplar Bluff hospital. The driver and another passenger in the second vehicle each received minor injuries. 

FORMER SOUTHEAST MISSOURI CITY CLERK SENTENCED ON STEALING CHARGE

A former city clerk in Southeast Missouri has been sentenced on a stealing charge.

Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway tells KWOC News that Helen Frye pled guilty earlier this year to a felony charge of stealing.

A 2020 audit by Auditor Galloway determined that more than $115,000 was taken fraudulently over a four-year period from the city of Parma through payroll overpayments and improper payments and purchases.

The audit also found that the officials primarily responsible for Parma's financial matters -- Frye and former mayor Tyus Byrd -- falsified meeting minutes and financial reports to conceal the fraud. Byrd also was charged with stealing and is awaiting trial, as is former city water supervisor David L. Thatch.

Earlier this week, Frye was ordered by the New Madrid County Circuit Court to pay restitution of over $37,000 to the city and was sentenced to seven years in prison. She received a suspended execution of sentence, meaning she will serve 120 days in prison and then be placed on probation. 

MARIJUANA IS NOW LEGAL IN MISSOURI, BUT YOU CAN’T BUY IT YET

As of Thursday, it’s lawful for adults to possess and use marijuana in Missouri, however that does not mean you can legally buy it just yet, or use it everywhere.

Medical marijuana has been legal in the state since 2018, but voters went a step further this November by approving a constitutional amendment legalizing recreational use. Missouri is the 21st state allowing recreational use.

The change comes with some confusion. For one thing, dispensaries cannot sell the drug for recreational use yet. People will eventually be able to grow their own, but applications to do so will not be taken until next month. And places such as schools and businesses can still prohibit the drug.

The Palace of Praise is presenting the 13th Annual Sounds of Christmas nightly from December 11th through the 14th beginning at 7 pm each night.

FOUR POPLAR BLUFF STUDENTS CHOSEN FOR ALL-STATE CHOIR

Four Poplar Bluff students will be traveling to Osage Beach next month to perform with the Missouri All-State Choir.

School officials tell KWOC News that Emma Tinsley will perform in the alto section; while Gabriel Burke and Bralin Duckett will perform with the tenors. Dawson Vaughan will serve as first alternate bass. Alyssa Roy received an honorable mention.

The students auditioned during the All-District Concert held last month at Cape Central High School. 

UNITED GOSPEL RESCUE MISSION TO PROVIDE CHRISTMAS MEALS

Preparations are underway for the United Gospel Rescue Mission’s Christmas Meal.

The Rescue Mission in Poplar Bluff will be providing meals on Sunday, December 25th and is asking for support from the community.

Officials say that they need volunteers to help prepare meals every day from 9 am to noon starting on December 22nd. On Christmas Day, the Rescue Mission will also need assistance to prepare, serve, and deliver the meals.

WHEATLEY HISTORIC PRESERVATION ASSOCIATION TO HOST CHRISTMAS GALA THIS WEEKEND

The Wheatley Historic Preservation Association will be hosting their Christmas Gala Fundraiser this weekend.

CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT TO BEGIN ON DECEMBER 14TH

State officials are encouraging birders in Southeast Missouri to join in on the National Audubon Society’s 123rd Christmas Bird Count.

The CBC is an early-winter bird census where thousands of volunteers across the U.S., Canada, and many countries in the western hemisphere go out over a 24-hour period on one calendar day to count birds.

24 hour counts will be held at Mingo National Wildlife Refuge on December 14th, Big Spring in Van Buren on December 17th, and Poplar Bluff on December 23rd.

MODOT TO HOST COMMUNITY BRIEFING IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold a community briefing today to discuss the Environmental Study for U.S. Route 412 in Dunklin County. 

The meeting will be held from 4 to 6 p.m.in the Senath High School gym.

MoDOT has launched the Environmental Study to plan for future capacity improvements on the 20-mile section of U.S. 412 extending from Route AC near the Arkansas border to just east of Route Y near Kennett. Completion of the study is anticipated in late 2023

REGISTRATION FOR YOUTH BASKETBALL UNDERWAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

It’s time for parents to get their kids registered for youth basketball in Poplar Bluff.

According to Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation, youth basketball registration is underway for children in Kindergarten as well as 5th and 6th grades.

Kindergarten games will be played at First United Methodist Church in January, while 5th and 6th grade games will be played at the Poplar Bluff Middle School starting in February. The registration deadline for Kindergarten is December 29th. The 5th and 6th grade registration deadline is January 6th.

The cost to register is $20, which includes a T-shirt. Registration forms are available at the Parks and Recreation office on North Second Street and online at pbparks.org.

SICKNESS FORCES TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF MULTIPLE AREA SCHOOL DISTRICTS

Multiple Southeast Missouri school districts will not be having classes for the remainder of this week due to illness.

The Doniphan R-1 School District announced Tuesday that they will be closed December 7th through December 9th.

Officials say that sickness has hit the district hard with several of our students, faculty, and staff absent. The district will sanitize and disinfect all buildings and classrooms before students return next week.

The Richland R-1 School District has also announced that they will not be in session from December 7th through December 9th due to excessive illnesses. 

TWO POPLAR BLUFF FACULTY MEMBERS NAMED MCDONALD’S OUTSTANDING EDUCATORS

Two Poplar Bluff elementary teachers have been named as McDonald’s Outstanding Educators for 2022.

According to school officials, third grade teacher Ashley Blume, of Oak Grove, and fifth grade teacher Teresa Hefner, of Lake Road, were selected among 50 top educators who were nominated via social media in September.

Last week, McDonald’s Area Supervisor Tony Seabaugh presented the teachers with $100 Visa gift cards, coffee mugs that read “best teacher ever,” and 25 McDonald’s ‘teach it forward’ coupons to go to students of their choosing.

A McDonald’s Spokesman says that they received more than 650 nominations from local community members, parents and fellow educators who told us what makes their favorite teachers the best.

ONE IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING DRUG BUST IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A man is facing multiple charges following a drug bust in Northeast Arkansas.

Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller tells KWOC News that on Tuesday, deputies were dispatched to County Road 478 following a report of a man asleep behind the wheel of a truck.

Deputies smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle and observed a nine millimeter handgun visible between the driver's seat and the middle console.

A search of the vehicle was conducted, and deputies located 263.2 grams of Marijuana, 4.9 grams of a schedule two substance, a set of digital scales, numerous plastic baggies, and other items of drug paraphernalia.

The driver, 20 year old Tyler Spray, of Rector, was taken into custody and is facing charges of possession of a schedule six controlled substance with the purpose to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to manufacture, possession of a schedule two controlled substance with the purpose to deliver, simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms, and misdemeanor drug paraphernalia.

Following the arrest, Spray was transported to the Greene County Detention Center. 

SEVEN PEOPLE INJURED, INCLUDING FOUR CHILDREN, FOLLOWING WRECK IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

Seven people were injured, including four children, following a two vehicle wreck near Sikeston.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred Monday afternoon on Route BB at the Sikeston City Limits, when a vehicle driven by a teenage female from Bloomfield failed to yield and was struck in the side.

Five people in the first vehicle, including four children under the age of 7, were injured in the wreck and transported to a Sikeston hospital. All five were from the Dexter area.

The driver of the second vehicle suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a Cape Girardeau hospital. A passenger in the second vehicle received minor injuries and was transported to a Sikeston hospital. 

BULKY ITEM PICK UP TO BE CONDUCTED NEXT WEEK IN POPLAR BLUFF

Poplar Bluff officials are reminding city residents that the city offers bulky item pickups once a month.

Residents can purchase bulk item tags from the city collector’s office at city hall for $20. The tags entitle you to the removal of four bulk items, such as couches or refrigerators. Tires may be collected for a charge of $3 per tire with a limit of four tires.

No construction materials or small items will be picked up and the program is for residential areas only.

Friday is the final day this month to purchase item tags to be included in next week’s pick up, which will be conducted on December 13th.

CONTRACTS AWARDED FOR ROAD PROJECTS IN STODDARD AND WAYNE COUNTIES

Contracts have been awarded for multiple road projects in Southeast Missouri.

According to officials a 5.1 million dollar contract was awarded to Apex Paving, for pavement resurfacing on Route 114 from Route 25 to Route 60 in Stoddard County.

An over 838 thousand dollar contract was awarded to Joe’s Bridge and Grading, for a bridge replacement on Route FF over Rings Creek in Wayne County.

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded the contracts during its regular meeting on December 6th.

Additional information, regarding timelines and impacts to traffic, will be released prior to the start of construction.

POPLAR BLUFF HOSPITAL TO CONDUCT ACTIVE SHOOTER DRILL

A Poplar Bluff hospital will be conducting an active shooter drill today.

According to officials with the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center, the drill is scheduled to begin today at 2 pm.

Officials say that the drill is necessary to practice emergency and crisis response plans.

Area emergency responders will also be participating in the drill. 

NAMES RELEASED OF VICTIMS IN QULIN DOUBLE HOMICIDE

Authorities have released the names of the two victims in a double homicide that occurred over the weekend in Qulin.

Butler County Coroner Jim Akers tells KWOC news that the victims have been identified as 48 year old Wendy Rhodes, of Qulin and 36 year old Margaret Delcour, of Broseley

According to Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs, 30 year old Steven Scott, of O’Fallon, was arrested Sunday morning after both Rhodes and Delcour were found dead inside a Qulin residence with gunshot wounds.

According to the probable cause affidavit, a witness told investigators that they had witnessed Scott arguing with the two women before shooting them.

Scott was taken into custody later that day in Dexter.

Scott has been charged with two counts of 1st degree murder, four counts of armed criminal action, and a single count each of abuse or neglect of a child, endangering the welfare of a child creating substantial risk, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful use of a weapon.

He is being held in the Butler County Justice Center on no bond.

NUMEROUS FLOATS LIGHT UP POPLAR BLUFF DURING THE RIVER RADIO LIGHTED CHRISTMAS PARADE

Numerous spectators and over a hundred vehicles lit up downtown Poplar Bluff this past weekend.

Everyone was out Friday night for the latest edition of the River Radio Lighted Christmas Parade.

The Boys and Girls Club of the Heartland were selected as the best float with their entry “Jingle into the Jungle.” 2nd place went to the Dance Studio and third place was Smith and Company.

NEW HUNTING REGULATIONS HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED FOR NEXT YEAR IN MISSOURI

The Missouri Department of Conservation has announced new regulations for turkey and deer hunting in the state as well as set the hunting dates for the 2023-24 seasons.

According to state officials, the regulation changes include a new firearms early antlerless portion, a new firearms CWD portion, and changes to firearms antlerless permit numbers in most counties.

The MDC will offer a new firearms early antlerless portion from October 6th through the 8th next year in the same 100 counties that are open for the firearms late antlerless portion from December 2nd through the 10th.

19TH ANNUAL SANTA LAND EVENT TO BE HELD TODAY IN POPLAR BLUFF

The 19th Annual Santa Land event has been scheduled for today in Poplar Bluff.

According to Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation, the event will be held from 6 to 8 pm at the Black River Coliseum. Individuals with special needs may enter at 5 pm.

During the event, children will get to visit with Santa and participate in many fun holiday activities.

SHOULDER WORK TO BEGIN TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route 114 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane beginning today as construction crews perform shoulder work.  

According to MoDOT, the section of roadway to be reduced is located from Route 25 to McCormick St. in Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place today through Friday, December 16th, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

TWO DEAD, ONE IN CUSTODY, FOLLOWING SHOOTING IN QULIN

A man is in custody following a fatal shooting in Butler County over the weekend.

Butler County Sheriff Mark Dobbs tells KWOC News that at approximately 1 am early Sunday morning, Butler County deputies responded to a report of two people being shot at a residence on the 100 block of New Hampshire Street in Qulin.

At the scene, deputies found two deceased females who appeared to be victims of gunshot wounds. The names of the victims are not being released at this time.

Investigators identified a suspect as 30 year old Stephen Scott, of O’Fallon. 

Scott surrendered himself to police in Dexter later Sunday morning.

Dobbs says that Scott is currently lodged in the Butler County Justice Center on two counts of 1st degree murder and armed criminal action.

The incident is still being investigated by the Butler County Sheriff’s Office and Butler County Coroner‘s Office.

NEW SUPERINTENDENT SELECTED FOR POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL DISTRICT

The search for the next Poplar Bluff R-1 Superintendent has come to an end.

School officials tell KWOC News that the Poplar Bluff Board of Education has hired Dr. Aaron Cornman to succeed Dr. Scott Dill in leading the school district starting in July.

The Gideon native was selected out of four finalists during a special meeting held on Thursday in the Administrative Building.

Dr. Cornman has served in education for over 20 years at a variety of school districts, including Risco, Malden, and Advance. He first became a school superintendent in 2007. 

DEXTER MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK

A Southeast Missouri man was flown to an area hospital last week after being involved in a single vehicle wreck.

According to the Highway Patrol, 32 year old Dalton O’Neal, of Dexter, was driving on Route F in Stoddard County when his vehicle ran off the side of the roadway and struck a ditch.

O’Neal suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was flown to a Memphis hospital. 

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON MULTIPLE CHARGES

Authorities in Butler County have arrested a Poplar Bluff man on multiple charges.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that 33 year old Joshua Morgan was arrested on Thursday on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and misdemeanor charges of tampering with physical evidence and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

He also reportedly had a felony Butler County warrant for driving while intoxicated.

Following the arrest, Morgan was held at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office. 

DRAINAGE REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Business 60 in Stoddard County will be reduced this week as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform drainage repairs.  

Officials say the section of roadway to be reduced is located from North 1 Mile Road to North Catalpa Street in Dexter.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily through Friday. 

ALMOST MONTH LONG REPAIR PROJECT TO BEGIN TODAY IN THE BOOTHEEL

Westbound Route 412 in Dunklin and Pemiscot counties will be reduced to one lane with a 14-foot width restriction over the next month as contractor crews perform pavement repairs.   

According to MoDOT, the work zone will be located from Interstate 55 to Route 25 in Kennett. 

Weather permitting, work will begin today and continue from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Tuesday, January 3rd.

2022 RIVER RADIO LIGHTED CHRISTMAS PARADE IS TONIGHT

Tonight is the night for the 2022 River Radio Lighted Christmas Parade in downtown Poplar Bluff.

Participants can start lining up at 4:30 pm in the Whiteley Park Parking lot, off of Highway 53. Personal vehicles will not be allowed to park in the parking lot.

The parade will begin at 6 pm, with the route running from Highway 142 at McDonalds through downtown Poplar Bluff before looping back and ending at the Black River Coliseum.

Today’s Talk KWOC 93.3 FM and 930 AM will be playing nonstop Christmas music from 5 to 8 pm tonight.

NEW CITY ADMINISTRATOR NAMED FOR DEXTER

A Stoddard County community will be welcoming a new face to their city leadership.  

Dexter Mayor Jason Banken tells us that David Wyman from the Missouri Department of Transportation has been chosen as the new city administrator for the city of Dexter.

Wyman was approved unanimously by the Dexter Board of Alderman Wednesday night.

Due to Wyman’s obligations with the Missouri Department of Transportation, he will start on January 17th. 

ONE DEAD FOLLOWING HEAD ON COLLISION IN MISSOURI BOOTHEEL

One person is dead, and another injured, following a head on collision in the Missouri Bootheel.

Officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol tell KWOC News that the crash occurred Wednesday evening on US Highway 61, near Holland.

A vehicle, driven by 23 year old Taylor Mosley, of Little Rock, Arkansas, crossed the center line and struck another vehicle head on.

Mosley was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the second vehicle suffered moderate injuries and was flown to a Memphis hospital. 

GREENVILLE DAY USE AREA AND CAMPGROUND AREA CLOSED TO ALL TRAFFIC

Construction has forced the closure of a campground in the Greenville area.

According to the Wappapello Lake US Army Corps of Engineers, due to the ongoing construction work in the Greenville Day Use Area and Campground, the area will be closed to all traffic until further notice. 

Officials say that barricades have been placed just past the boat ramp turn-off and in several locations along the multi-use trail to inform users of the closure. 

The boat ramp, cul-de-sac area, and multi-use trail will remain open and accessible.

POPLAR BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL TO HOST ROBOTICS COMPETITION THIS WEEKEND 

Poplar Bluff High School will be hosting a robotics competition this weekend.

Poplar Bluff’s Iron Mules will be competing against teams from across Southeast Missouri on Saturday from 11:30 am to 2 pm at the PBHS Cafeteria.

Entry is free, but there will also be a concession stand with drinks, pizza, sandwiches, and other items, which will help raise funds for the Iron Mules.  

MULTIPLE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS AWARDED GRANTS FOR EQUIPMENT 

Multiple law enforcement agencies in Northeast Arkansas have been awarded grant money for equipment.

According to the Arkansas State Police, state funded grants totaling more than $7 million dollars were awarded Thursday to 113 local and state law enforcement agencies and correctional or detention facilities. 

In Northeast Arkansas, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Randolph County Sheriff’s Department, and Corning Police Department were all approved for $100,000 grants.

Officials say that approximately 90 percent of the total funds distributed to local police and sheriff's departments is to purchase new equipment.

ANTLERLESS PORTION OF DEER SEASON TO BEGIN ON SATURDAY

The antlerless portion of deer season is set to begin this weekend.

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, the antlerless portion will run from December 3rd to December 11th and only antlerless deer may be harvested.

There are also additional restrictions depending on the county you are in. For example, many counties in Southeast Missouri are closed to firearms hunting during this portion of deer season, such as Butler, Carter, and Wayne Counties.

STATE OFFICIALS DETAIL EFFORTS TO RETAIN TEACHERS IN POPLAR BLUFF

Missouri state officials were in Poplar Bluff recently to discuss the teacher shortage that is affecting schools across the state.

Missouri Education Commissioner Dr. Margie Vandeven and the Blue Ribbon Commission detailed their efforts in addressing what was labeled a statewide teacher recruitment and retention “crisis” during their final public engagement forum held on November 17th at Poplar Bluff Schools.

Over 50 patrons were in attendance at Kay Porter Theater including educators, R-I school board members, parents, and concerned community members.

Immediate priorities to address the issue include increasing the starting teacher salary in state statute and continuing to fund the new Teachers Baseline Salary Grant program, which the Poplar Bluff School District already applied and establishing sustainable funding for Grow Your Own programs such as R-I’s Pathways for Paraprofessionals pilot.

Additional short and long-term recommendations for lawmakers include increasing support for mental health resources for educators; providing more tuition forgiveness options; and making salary supplements available for high-needs positions and for teachers with National Board Certification.

CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS AT THE POPLAR BLUFF LIBRARY OPEN HOUSE

The Poplar Bluff Library will be celebrating the holiday season next week with an open house event.

The event has been scheduled for 2 to 4 pm on Saturday, December 10th at the Library’s main branch.

Attendees can enjoy story time with Santa, make crafts for all ages, listen to live Christmas music from the High School Choir Ensemble, and enjoy hot chocolate from the Friends of the Library.

There will be a picture session with Santa once storytime is over.

SPECIAL CHRISTMAS EVENT COMING THIS WEEKEND TO POPLAR BLUFF MUSEUM

The Poplar Bluff Museum is hosting a special Christmas event this weekend.

A Christmas Tree Forest Open House is scheduled for 1 to 4 pm on Sunday, December 4th at the Museum.

Attendees can enjoy punch and cookies while viewing the trees and the museum exhibits. Admission is free and attendees will also be able to vote on their favorite trees.

POPLAR BLUFF LEAF AND LIMB DISPOSAL SITE TO BE OPEN FOR THE NEXT FIVE SATURDAYS

Poplar Bluff residents who are doing some yard clean up before winter gets here have a place to dispose of their leaves and limbs.

According to the Poplar Bluff Street Department, the city’s leaf and limb disposal site will be open from 8 am to 4 pm on Saturdays from December 3rd through January 7th, in addition to its normal operating hours.

To reach the disposal site, turn onto South F Street, off of Bartlett Street, go under the overpass, and then the disposal site will be around the curve on the left.

Officials say that you should take your leaves to the rear of the site and there will be a purple post for where you should dump the leaves.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI MAN SENTENCED TO 40 YEARS IN PRISON ON MURDER CHARGE

A Southeast Missouri man has been sentenced to multiple decades in prison on a murder charge.

According to Arkansas Court Connect, 30 year old Heath Hunsaker, of Bloomfield, pled guilty Monday to a charge of 1st degree murder. The charge stems from the shooting death of 35 year old Matthew Hale in March.

Hale’s body was found with gunshot wounds at a residence near Rector.

After the plea, Hunsaker was sentenced to 40 years in prison on the murder charge.

MISSOURI DROUGHT ALERT EXTENDED UNTIL MARCH

The long term dry conditions affecting Missouri has prompted the governor to extend the ongoing drought alert.

Earlier this week, Governor Mike Parson issued Executive Order 22-07 extending Missouri’s drought alert until March 1st, 2023, to address issues outlined by the state’s Drought Assessment Committee.

Parson says that currently 87 percent of Missouri continues to face abnormally dry conditions, with many counties still experiencing moderate, severe, or extreme drought. Drought conditions are not expected to substantially improve this winter.

Parson added that extending the alert will allow impact teams to continue supporting affected communities throughout the winter and continue to expand the state’s capabilities to respond to and lessen the impacts of future droughts.

POPLAR BLUFF AMONG AREA CAREER CENTERS TO RECEIVE GRANT MONEY

Multiple area career centers have been chosen to receive grant money.

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has awarded several Missouri Career and Technical Education programs with grant dollars to further support the work that these programs do to ensure all Missouri students are prepared for success upon graduation.

Over 50 career centers across the state will receive $400,000 from the grant, including the Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center, the Current River Career Center in Doniphan, the Kennett Career and Technology Center, and the New Madrid County R-1 Technical Skills Center.

The grant’s funds must be used to enhance or extend area career centers’ capacities to increase students’ knowledge and skills needed to gain employment in current or emerging fields, continue their education, or re-train for new business and industry opportunities.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON METH AND PARAPHERNALIA CHARGES

Authorities in Butler County have arrested an area man on multiple felony charges.

According to the Highway Patrol, 48 year old Joseph Holman, of Poplar Bluff, was arrested Tuesday morning on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Holman also reportedly had two warrants from the Poplar Bluff Police Department.

Following the arrest, Holman was held at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN ARRESTED ON METH CHARGE

Authorities in Southeast Missouri have arrested an area man on a felony drug charge.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 33 year old Joseph Hurdle, of Poplar Bluff, is facing a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

Officials say the arrest occurred shortly after 7:30 pm Monday night in Wayne County.

BRIDGE REPAIRS TO CAUSE DELAYS IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

U.S. Highway 62 in Dunklin County will be reduced as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform bridge repairs.

The section Highway 62 to be reduced is located from County Road 217 to the Missouri State line.

Weather permitting, work will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. both today and tomorrow.

POPLAR BLUFF MAN IN CUSTODY ON STATUTORY RAPE CHARGES

A Poplar Bluff man is in custody on statutory rape and sodomy charges.

34 year old Corvette Christian is facing charges of child molestation – 2nd degree, statutory rape – 1st degree, and four counts of statutory sodomy.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Christian admitted to investigators to inappropriately touching the victim multiple times.

Christian appeared in court on Monday and is being held in custody at the Butler County Detention Center on no bond. 

CHANCES FOR SEVERE WEATHER TODAY IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI AND NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

Weather officials are watching for possibilities of severe weather today in Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas.

According to the National Weather Service, a few strong to severe thunderstorms are possible late Tuesday and Tuesday night.

The storms could include damaging winds, large hail, and tornados.

The chances of storms are higher in our more southeastern listening areas including the southern portion of the Missouri bootheel. 

MISSOURI YOUNG HUNTERS HARVEST ALMOST 3,000 DEER DURING LATE YOUTH PORTION OF HUNTING SEASON

Young hunters in Missouri harvested almost 3,000 deer last week.

Preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation shows that young hunters, between the ages of 6 and 15, harvested 2,881 deer during Missouri’s late youth portion of the 2022 deer hunting season. The late youth portion ran from November 25th to the 27th.

Of the 2,881 deer harvested, 1,302 were antlered bucks, 322 were button bucks, and 1,257 were does.

MDC Cervid Program Supervisor Jason Isabelle tells KWOC News that this year’s harvest total was slightly below average, but that wasn’t unexpected given the rain that moved through portions of the state Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

SMALL EARTHQUAKE SHAKES SOUTHEAST MISSOURI

A small earthquake shook a Southeast Missouri community early Monday morning.

According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 2.1 earthquake was recorded at approximately 2:40 am Monday morning.

The quake was centered around two and a half miles west northwest of Marston and had a depth of over six miles.

HIGHWAY 328 IN CLAY COUNTY TO BE CLOSED FOR APPROXIMATELY TWO WEEKS

A road in Northeast Arkansas will be closed over the next two weeks.

Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller tells KWOC News that as of yesterday, Highway 328 in Clay County will be closed from County Road 135 to County Road 139.

Miller says that the section of highway should be closed for approximately two weeks. A reason for the closure was not given.

SOUNDS OF CHRISTMAS COMING TO THE PALACE OF PRAISE

The dates have been set for a Christmas themed play at a Poplar Bluff church.

The Palace of Praise is presenting the 13th Annual Sounds of Christmas nightly from December 11th through the 14th beginning at 7 pm each night.  

Admission to the show is free, but you can also purchase tickets for a dinner theater experience on the 12th, 13th, and 14th.

ALMOST 200,000 DEER HARVESTED DURING FIREARMS DEER SEASON

Almost 200,000 deer were harvested in Missouri during deer season.

Preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation shows that deer hunters in Missouri harvested 197,724 deer during the November portion of firearms deer season from November 12th through the 22nd. Of the deer harvested, 102,633 were antlered bucks, 16,929 were button bucks, and 78,162 were does.

This year’s total was in increase of over 8,000 deer from last year.

Howell and Bollinger were the top counties in Southeast Missouri, with over three thousand deer harvested each, which put them at 4th and 5th statewide.

POPLAR BLUFF FIRE DEPARTMENT IS ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Anyone interested in fire service in Poplar Bluff is being invited to apply for a scholarship from the Poplar Bluff Fire Department.

According to fire officials, the scholarship is for Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and HazMat Awareness classes at Three Rivers College. This scholarship will be for the spring semester, and will cover the cost of all three classes.

Applications are available at Fire Station 1 on South Broadway as well as the Poplar Bluff Fire Department Facebook page.

The deadline to apply is December 5th. 

POPLAR BLUFF LIBRARY COLLECTING BOOKS FOR SANTA LAND

The Poplar Bluff library is collecting books for area children.

The Library has partnered with Altrusa to collect books so that every child who visits Santa Land this year leaves with a book.

Santa Land is an annual event that takes place at the Black River Coliseum.

The Library is asking anyone who would like to drop off new or gently used children's books, appropriate for ages birth to 6th grade, to do so at either of the library's branches from now until December 2nd.

The Santa Land collection box is on the landing at the Main Branch and in the lobby at the Ridgel Branch.

2022 EGGNOG JOG 5K SET FOR THIS WEEKEND

Registration is underway for the 2022 Eggnog Jog 5k in Poplar Bluff.

The race will begin at 9 am on Saturday, December 3rd at Hendrickson Park. Registration will start at 8 am.

MODOT TO HELP GRANT CHRISTMAS WISHES TO AREA FAMILIES

The Missouri Department of Transportation will be participating in the Christmas Angels program again this year to help grant Christmas wishes to Southeast Missouri families.

This year's event will be held on Thursday, December 1st, with chili orders due by 4 pm this afternoon. The cost is $6 and will include a 16-ounce cup of chili, crackers and chips.

Current MoDOT employees and retirees volunteer to cook, pack, and deliver chili for the event. To place an order, call (573) 472-5294. Orders of five or more in the Sikeston area can be delivered. 

With the funds raised, volunteers purchase gifts for children who would not otherwise receive them.

UNITED GOSPEL RESCUE MISSION TO HOST ANNUAL THANKSGIVING DINNER

The United Gospel Rescue Mission is providing their annual Thanksgiving Meal this Thursday.  

The Thanksgiving meal will be held at around noon at the Rescue Mission in Poplar Bluff. If you can’t make it to the rescue mission you can also call ahead and have a meal delivered to you by contacting 573-785-4683.

The Rescue Mission is in need of volunteers to help prepare meals from 9 am to noon today. On Thanksgiving, the rescue mission will also need assistance to prepare, serve, and deliver the meals. They are also accepting donations of desserts to be used in the meals.

HILLCREST ANIMAL HOSPITAL IS HOSTING A PET FOOD DRIVE THIS WEEK

A Poplar Bluff veterinarian is hosting a pet food drive this week.

Hillcrest Animal Hospital is accepting dog and cat food today and Friday.

For each item of food someone brings, you can enter to win an Arctic cooler filled with supplements and pet goodies. The winner will be announced on Friday.

All pet food that is brought in will be donated to the Bread Shed and distributed to those in need.

MOTORISTS ENCOURAGED TO DRIVE SAFELY DURING THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY PERIOD

Many Missouri residents are getting ready to get on the road to see their family for Thanksgiving, but officials are urging motorists to keep safety in mind.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, 12 people were killed and another 540 were injured during the 2021 Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

MoDOT is urging motorists to be vigilant, always buckle up, obey posted speed limits and never drive impaired or distracted.

State Troopers will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E., over the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend, enforcing all traffic laws, and being available to assist the public.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Emergency Report line is 1-800-525-5555, or (star)55 on a cellular phone. Motorists should use the emergency line if they witness criminal activity or experience an emergency.  

MODOT TO HOST COMMUNITY BRIEFING IN DUNKLIN COUNTY

The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold a community briefing next month to discuss the Environmental Study for U.S. Route 412 in Dunklin County.

The meeting will be held in the Senath High School gym, from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 8th.

MoDOT has launched the Environmental Study to plan for future capacity improvements on the 20-mile section of U.S. 412 extending from Route AC near the Arkansas border to just east of Route Y near Kennett. Completion of the study is anticipated in late 2023.

INVESTIGATION CONTINUES INTO HUNTER’S DEATH IN CARTER COUNTY

Authorities are asking for the public’s assistance in the investigation of a hunter’s death in Southeast Missouri.

58 year old Philip Carnell, of Sikeston, was first reported missing on November 13th. His body was found on November 16th near where he was hunting in Ozark National Scenic Riverways.

National Park Service law enforcement rangers are asking that anyone who was camping or hunting during the opening weekend of deer season in the area of Cave Spring on the lower section of the Current River in Carter County, to contact the park's law enforcement specialist, Chuck Lochart, at 573-351-9642.

AREA WOMAN TAKEN TO POPLAR BLUFF HOSPITAL FOLLOWING SINGLE VEHICLE WRECK

An area woman was injured in a single vehicle wreck Saturday evening.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 33 year old Brittany House, of Gideon, was driving on Missouri Highway 25 near Clarkton, when her vehicle ran off the side of the road, struck a utility pole, and overturned.

House suffered serious injuries in the wreck and was transported by ambulance to a Poplar Bluff hospital.

THANKSGIVING COOKING SAFETY TIPS

Thanksgiving is almost here, and the American Red Cross is reminding you to stay safe while you prepare the holiday dinner.

The Red Cross advises that cooks should avoid wearing loose clothing or dangling sleeves while preparing the holiday meal.

You should also never leave the stove unattended – if the cook has to leave the kitchen even for a short time, they should turn off the stove.

Remember to clean cooking surfaces on a regular basis to prevent grease buildup and keep anything that can catch fire, including pot holders, oven mitts, and food packaging, away from the stove, oven or any other appliance in the kitchen that generates heat.

According to the Center for Disease Control, before cooking your turkey, set the oven temperature no lower than 325°F and be sure the turkey is completely thawed.

For optimal safety and uniform doneness, you should cook the stuffing outside the turkey in a casserole dish. However, if you plan on placing the stuffing inside the turkey, do so just before cooking.

TWO VEHICLE CRASH RESULTS IN THREE DEATHS

There people were killed in a two vehicle wreck over the weekend.

According to authorities, the crash occurred Saturday evening on US Highway 67 near Lawrence County Road 510 when a vehicle crossed the center turning lane and struck an oncoming vehicle.

The driver of the first vehicle, 57 year old Phillis Stayton, of Hoxie, was killed in the wreck, as were two people in the second vehicle, 55 year old Ronnie Hart and 49 year old Teresa Hart, both of Walnut Ridge. 

AREA LAW ENFORCEMENT TO PARTICIPATE IN DRIVE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER CAMPAIGN

Area law enforcement agencies are reminding everyone to not drink and drive while celebrating the holidays.

Law enforcement agencies across Missouri and Arkansas are participating in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement period from November 23rd through January 1st.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 11,654 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2020 that involved an alcohol-impaired driver.

On average, more than 10,000 people were killed each year from 2016 to 2020, and one person was killed in a drunk-driving crash every 45 minutes in 2020.

PAVEMENT REPAIRS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN TODAY IN STODDARD COUNTY

Route 114 in Stoddard County will be reduced to one lane beginning today as Missouri Department of Transportation crews perform pavement repairs.

The section of roadway to be reduced is located from Route 60 near Morehouse to Route FF near Essex.

Weather permitting, work will take place today and tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.

POPLAR BLUFF AND NEELYVILLE CHOSEN TO RECEIVE PART OF $410 MILLION DOLLARS IN COMMUNITY WATER INFRASTRUCTURE GRANTS

Numerous Southeast Missouri communities, including Poplar Bluff and Neelyville have been approved for water infrastructure grants.

Governor Mike Parson announced Friday that the Missouri Department of Natural Resources is awarding $410 million to help Missouri communities improve drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure as well as lead service line inventories.

The city of Poplar Bluff has been selected for a Stormwater Infrastructure grant and approved for $5 million dollars in funding.

Neelyville was approved for a $5 million dollar Drinking Water Infrastructure grant as well as an over $2 million dollar Wastewater Infrastructure grant and $200 thousand dollars for lead service line inventories.

HILLCREST ANIMAL HOSPITAL IS HOSTING A PET FOOD DRIVE THIS WEEK

A Poplar Bluff veterinarian is hosting a pet food drive this week.

Hillcrest Animal Hospital is accepting dog and cat food beginning today and continuing through Friday, except for on Thanksgiving.

For each item of food someone brings, you can enter to win an Arctic cooler filled with supplements and pet goodies. The winner will be announced on Friday.

All pet food that is brought in will be donated to the Bread Shed and distributed to those in need.

UNITED GOSPEL RESCUE MISSION TO HOST ANNUAL THANKSGIVING DINNER

The United Gospel Rescue Mission is providing their annual Thanksgiving Meal this Thursday.  

The Thanksgiving meal will be held at around noon at the Rescue Mission in Poplar Bluff. If you can’t make it to the rescue mission you can also call ahead and have a meal delivered to you by contacting 573-785-4683.

Anyone who wants to help support the event can do so by purchasing a whole turkey for $50 dollars or a sliced turkey for $60.

The Rescue Mission is also in need of volunteers to help prepare meals from 9 am to noon starting on November 21st. On Thanksgiving, the rescue mission will also need assistance to prepare, serve, and deliver the meals. They are also accepting donations of desserts to be used in the meals.

FILING TO BEGIN IN DECEMBER FOR CITY COUNCIL ELECTIONS

Filing will begin early next month for the upcoming Poplar Bluff City Council elections.

According to Poplar Bluff City Clerk Lori Phelps, the city will be holding elections in April for three seats on the City Council, one representative from Ward Five and two for the At Large seats. All three elections will be for three year terms.

Candidates can begin filing for the election on Tuesday, December 6th. The final day for candidate filing will be December 27th.

WHEATLEY HISTORIC PRESERVATION ASSOCIATION TO HOST CHRISTMAS GALA NEXT MONTH

HAYTI FIRE DEPARTMENT RIB DINNER SCHEDULED FOR EARLY DECEMBER

A Southeast Missouri Fire Department has announced the date for their annual rib dinner.

The 43rd annual Hayti Fire Department Rib Dinner will be from 5 to 7 pm on December 3rd. Officials say that the event will be set up as a drive through line at the Fire Station.

Tickets are $40 for two plates. There will also be a cash giveaway and raffles for multiple items.

DEADLINE APPROACHING TO ENTER INTO THE RIVER RADIO LIGHTED CHRISTMAS PARADE

Parade lights will be shining bright in Downtown Poplar Bluff this December for the 2022 River Radio Lighted Christmas Parade.

Entries are now being accepted for the parade, which is scheduled for 6 pm on Friday, December 2nd. Entry forms are available on our Facebook page and website. The deadline for entries is November 25th.

The parade route this year will run from Highway 142 at McDonalds through downtown Poplar Bluff before looping back and ending at the Black River Coliseum.

AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING NON-FATAL SHOOTING IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

One person was shot during an incident Thursday morning in Northeast Arkansas.

Officials with the Paragould Police Department tell KWOC News that shortly after 6 am on Thursday, Paragould Emergency Service received a report of an altercation between two subjects on East Court Street. The altercation resulted in one of the subjects being shot and it appears that the gunshot wound is non-life threatening.

Crews rendered aid to the subject and transported them to an area hospital. The other subject was taken into custody.

Officials say that no further information will be released at this time due to the ongoing investigation. 

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS AUTO TOUR TO BEGIN ON NOVEMBER 25TH

MOTORISTS ENCOURAGED TO DRIVE SAFELY DURING THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY PERIOD

Many Missouri residents are getting ready to get on the road to see their family for Thanksgiving, but officials are urging motorists to keep safety in mind.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, 12 people were killed and another 540 were injured during the 2021 Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

MoDOT is urging motorists to be vigilant, always buckle up, obey posted speed limits and never drive impaired or distracted.

State Troopers will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E., over the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend, enforcing all traffic laws, and being available to assist the public.

POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOL FORGES PARTNERSHIP WITH NORTHSIDE NUTRITION CENTER

A Poplar Bluff School has partnered with the Northside Nutrition Center to serve senior citizens lunch.

Several students from Mark Twain School have been working for free at the Poplar Bluff Housing Authority’s Twin Towers four days a week since September.

Instructor Darla Nunn, who presides over the Jobs for America’s Graduates program, says that the students are not only learning "hands-on life skills" but "people skills" in a "huge, positive atmosphere."

The relationship was established when Emily LeMaster, Nutrition Center administrator, observed Nunn’s JAG students volunteering at the Bread Shed. A schedule was arranged so students could clock in with timesheets and receive evaluations for a grade.

Also new this year, Mark Twain students have been volunteering at the Animal Welfare Alliance, along with mentoring at the Kindergarten Center. 

MOTORISTS REMINDED TO WATCH FOR ANIMALS ON THE ROADWAY

With fall in full swing, motorists are being reminded to watch out for animals on the roadways.

According to 2021 statistics from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, drivers in Missouri experienced 3,779 traffic crashes where deer-vehicle strikes occurred. One deer strike occurred every 2 hours and 18 min in the state. In these crashes, there were three fatalities and 420 people were injured.

Drivers should never swerve to avoid animals in the road as it can cause loss of control of their vehicles, resulting in serious injury or death. To avoid hitting a deer, always be cautious and keep your eyes scanning both sides of the roadway.

Missouri law says that an individual who has struck and killed a deer with their vehicle may claim the deer carcass if written authorization to possess the deer is granted by a Missouri Department of Conservation agent.

The Wildlife Dispensation permit is free, but you need to contact the Missouri Department of Conservation to obtain the permit.

MISSING HUNTER FOUND DEAD IN CARTER COUNTY

Authorities in Carter County say that a missing hunter has been found dead.

According to officials, the body of 58 year old Phillip Carnell, of Sikeston, was found on Wednesday near the area where he had been hunting. 

Carnell was deer hunting in Ozark National Scenic Riverways, near Cave Spring in Carter County.

After more than two days of intense searching, volunteers on horseback discovered Carnell’s body on a small island in a slough. 

Officials say that it is suspected that he became lost and crossed the slough onto the island while tracking a deer.  The condition of the body is consistent with death caused by hypothermia and exposure. An investigation into the death is ongoing.

19TH ANNUAL SANTA LAND EVENT TO BE HELD NEXT MONTH IN POPLAR BLUFF

The 19th Annual Santa Land event has been scheduled for next month in Poplar Bluff.

According to Poplar Bluff Parks and Recreation, the event will be held on Tuesday, December 6th, from 6 to 8 pm at the Black River Coliseum. Individuals with special needs may enter at 5 pm.

During the event, children will get to visit with Santa and participate in many fun holiday activities.

US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS LOOKING FOR PARTICIPANTS FOR ADOPT A TRAIL PROGRAM

Officials with the United States Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake are looking to get their Adopt-A-Trail program going in 2023.

Officials say that prior to the pandemic, various groups had adopted several trails at Wappapello Lake, including nature trails, wildlife viewing trails, hiking trails, equestrian trail, and walking/bicycling trails.

The program will be restarted in the Spring of 2023 and anyone wanting to be involved is asked to contact the Wappapello Lake Management Office at 573-222-8562.

Duties will include conducting maintenance of the trails at least twice a year and/or after a major storm.  The Corps will provide all necessary tools and supplies. 

The name of the group or organization will be placed on a sign at the trailhead recognizing the trail adoptee.

MDC REMINDING HUNTERS TO NOT DUMP DEER CARCASSES

The Missouri Department of Conservation is asking hunters to not dump their deer carcasses.

Southeast Region Protection Captain Russell Duckworth tells us that they receive and investigate numerous calls about illegal dumping of deer carcasses this time of year. The calls are usually from concerned citizens who find a discarded deer carcass along public roadways.

In Missouri, a person commits the offense of unlawful disposing of a dead animal when they knowingly place or cause to be placed, the carcass or offal of any dead animal into any creek, pond, or lake; as well as on any public road or highway, among other places.

Duckworth says that the illegal dumping could also be contributing to the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease.

POPLAR BLUFF CHURCH TO CONDUCT ANNUAL CHRISTMAS GIFT GIVEAWAY

SENATH MAN KILLED IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS CRASH

One person is dead following a crash Monday in Northeast Arkansas.

According to the Arkansas State Police, 21 year old Shawn Abentroth, of Senath, was driving in Greene County when he failed to yield at a stop sign and crossed into the path of another vehicle.

Abentroth’s vehicle was struck and then overturned into a parking lot.

Officials say that Abentroth was killed in the crash while the driver of the second vehicle was injured and transported to an area hospital. 

PUBLIC MEETINGS SCHEDULED FOR NEXT MONTH TO DISCUSS PROPOSED FUTURE I-57 CONNECTION IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS

A series of public meetings will be held next month to discuss the proposed future Interstate 57 in Northeast Arkansas.

The Arkansas Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration will conduct three Public Hearings to present and discuss the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed Walnut Ridge to Missouri State Line connection in Clay, Greene, Lawrence, and Randolph counties.

The meetings will be held on December 13th at Williams Baptist University in Walnut Ridge, on December 14th at the Pocahontas Community Center, and on December 15th at the M.B. Ainley Community Center in Corning. Each meeting will be from 4 to 7 pm and be held as an open house with no formal presentations.

POPLAR BLUFF FIRE DEPARTMENT IS ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Anyone interested in fire service in Poplar Bluff is being invited to apply for a scholarship from the Poplar Bluff Fire Department.

According to fire officials, the scholarship is for Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and HazMat Awareness classes at Three Rivers College. This scholarship will be for the spring semester, and will cover the cost of all three classes.

POPLAR BLUFF SCHOOLS RAISE OVER TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR ANIMAL WELFARE ALLIANCE

Poplar Bluff students have raised thousands of dollars for a no-kill animal shelter in town.

According to school officials, the Middle School art department and High School Student Council recently raised over $2,300 for the Animal Welfare Alliance of Southeast Missouri.

Art students auctioned portraits, sold stuffed animals for adoption, and made charm bracelets among other ideas resulting in over $1,000 raised during the month of October.

The AWA was also selected as the service project for the recent Missouri Association of Student Councils Southeast District meet held at PBHS. An impromptu coin war was initiated among the 29 participating schools, generating an additional $1,300 for the organization.

A little over a year ago, the AWA opened a no-kill shelter on South Westwood Boulevard.

19TH ANNUAL BRIDGE BUILDING COMPETITION TO BE HELD TOMORROW

25 schools from across southeast Missouri will be competing to build the best bridge tomorrow.

The Missouri Department of Transportation’s Southeast District will hold the 19th Annual Bridge Building Competition on Thursday in Cape Girardeau.

The bridge competition challenges high school juniors and seniors to design and construct the most efficient model bridge using limited materials, including balsa wood, string, and glue.

Prizes donated by area businesses and organizations will be awarded to the top bridge building winners, as well as for the most aesthetic bridge and the electronic bridge building contest.

Similar to previous years, cash prizes donated by the SE Chapter Transportation Employee Association of Missouri will be given to the top schools with the best overall performance.

WORK TO BEGIN TODAY ON I-55 OFF RAMP IN PEMISCOT COUNTY

The Southbound I-55 Off Ramp at Exit 17B in Pemiscot County will be closed beginning today.

Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation say that the closure is so contractor crews can perform concrete work.  

Work will take place today through Wednesday, November 23rd. The work zone will be in place 24 hours a day until work is completed.

OVER 93 THOUSAND DEER HARVESTED DURING OPENING WEEKEND OF FIREARM DEER SEASON

Hunters across Missouri took to the woods over the weekend for the opening of the November potion of firearms deer season.

According to preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation, hunters harvested 93,355 deer during the opening weekend. Of the deer harvested, 55,267 were antlered bucks, 7,250 were button bucks, and 30,838 were does.

This was an increase of over 3,000 deer from last year’s opening weekend.

Bollinger, Howell, and Wayne were the top counties in Southeast Missouri coming in at 4th, 10th, and 15th statewide. 

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI SENATOR NAMED AS ASSISTANT MAJORITY FLOOR LEADER

A Missouri State Senator from Holcomb will be serving in the leadership team of Missouri Republicans during the next legislative session.

State Senator Jason Bean tells KWOC News that he was elected to serve as the assistant majority floor leader by the Missouri Senate Majority Caucus for the 102nd General Assembly.

The assistant majority floor leader is responsible for assuming the majority floor leader’s role in his or her absence. The majority floor leader is responsible for setting the schedule of bills up for consideration by the full body, the time allotted for floor debate on legislation and session meeting times and dates.

Bean is the Senator for Missouri District 25, which includes eight counties in Southeast Missouri, including Butler, Dunklin, and Stoddard Counties.

The 102nd General Assembly will convene on Wednesday, January 4th for the start of the 2023 legislative session.

RECORD NUMBER OF VETERANS PARTICIPATE IN PBMS VETERANS DAY PARADE

A record number of veterans were involved in this year’s Poplar Bluff Middle School Veterans Day Parade.

According to school officials, about 50 veterans participated in the annual parade on Friday, as students lined the Victory Lane campus holding up handmade signs.

The veterans were led by the High School JROTC, Sho-Me Marching Band, Cheerleaders and Pom Squad; Middle School Honor Choir and Safety Patrol; among others.

The Middle School has been hosting a parade for the past three years before which the campus held a Veterans Day Assembly dating back to 1997 at the former 5th and 6th Grade Center. The event is the largest of multiple gatherings honoring veterans throughout the school district.

VIRGINIA MAN ARRESTED IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI ON DRUG CHARGES

Authorities in Southeast Missouri have arrested a Virginia man on multiple drug related charges.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 43 year old Victor Church, of Pound, Virginia, was taken into custody Sunday morning on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Church is also facing a charge of possession of marijuana.

Following the arrest, Church was held at the Stoddard County Jail. 

MEDICARE INFORMATION SESSION TO BE HELD AT POPLAR BLUFF LIBRARY

The Poplar Bluff Library will be hosting a free Medicare information session this week.

According to library officials, the session has been scheduled for 1 pm on Wednesday, November 16th at the Library’s main branch on North Main Street.

Attendees can get answers to questions from certified Medicare counselors. You can also attend the presentation over zoom.

MODOT TO HELP GRANT CHRISTMAS WISHES TO AREA FAMILIES

The Missouri Department of Transportation will be participating in the Christmas Angels program again this year to help grant Christmas wishes to Southeast Missouri families.

This year's event will be held on Thursday, December 1st, with chili orders due by 4 pm on Monday, November 28th. The cost is $6 and will include a 16-ounce cup of chili, crackers and chips.

Current MoDOT employees and retirees volunteer to cook, pack, and deliver chili for the event. To place an order, call (573) 472-5294. Orders of five or more in the Sikeston area can be delivered. 

With the funds raised, volunteers purchase gifts for children who would not otherwise receive them.
